Abstract
Commonly used materials for fixed restorations in edentulous jaws include acrylic resins, polymerized ceramics, ceramics and zirconia, which have distinct physicochemical properties and clinical application features. The selection of these materials in clinical practice is related to the prosthodontic space, oral soft and hard tissue conditions, occlusal force, lifestyle habits, oral parafunctions, opposing dentition materials, and expectations of patients. Common mechanical complications associated with fixed restorations in edentulous jaws are cracking/chipping and abrasion of the facing materials, which can be avoided through occlusal adjustment, restoration design and processing, and the selection of appropriate restorative materials. This article reviews the characteristics, selection, and design considerations of commonly used materials for fixed restorations in edentulous jaws, as well as the causes and management of common clinical complications related to restorative materials, aiming to provide references for the selection of appropriate materials in fixed restorations for edentulous jaws in clinical practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare volumetric wear of lithium disilicate against different ceramic (3 mol% yttria-stabilized (3Y) zirconia, 5 mol% yttria-stabilized (5Y) zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain and enamel antagonists). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty lithium disilicate (e.max CAD) specimens (n = 8/antagonist) were wet sanded to 1200grit SiC and mounted into a UAB wear device. Antagonist spheres (diameter = 4.75 mm) were made from polished 3Y zirconia, 5Y zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain and human enamel. A two-body wear test was performed with 20 N load and 1.5 mm slide for 400,000 cycles at 1 Hz. 33% glycerin was used as a lubricant. Wear facets were measured with optical profilometry. Wear scar areas of antagonists were measured with digital microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on wear facets and scars. Vicker's microhardness was measured of all antagonist materials. All data were compared with 1-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc analysis. RESULTS Significant differences in lithium disilicate volumetric wear (mm3 ) occurred with various antagonist materials: 0.38 ± 0.01a (3Y zirconia), 0.33 ± 0.01b, (5Y zirconia), 0.16 ± 0.01c (lithium disilicate), 0.11 ± 0.03d, (enamel), and 0.07 ± 0.01e (porcelain). The lithium disilicate antagonist demonstrated a larger wear scar than other materials. Zirconia was the hardest material and enamel the least hard. CONCLUSIONS Zirconia causes significant wear on lithium disilicate and lithium disilicate causes significant wear against itself. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE When selecting a material to oppose an existing lithium disilicate crown, a porcelain or lithium disilicate surface would cause significantly less wear to the existing crown. If an existing zirconia crown exists opposed to a prepared tooth, lithium disilicate may not be an ideal material selection to restore the tooth.

Abstract
Wear resistance is one of the properties that must be considered for maintaining the long-term functionality of artificial teeth in dental prostheses. This property can be altered by the method of tooth fabrication, the material, the chewing force, and the relationship to the antagonist tooth. This systematic review evaluated the wear resistance of artificial teeth obtained by the additive manufacturing method and aims to answer the question, "Do artificial teeth for dental prostheses obtained by additive manufacturing show wear resistance similar to prefabricated ones?" The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Checklist guidelines were followed with a customized search in Scopus, PubMed/Medline, Embase, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases on August 30, 2023. The inclusion criteria were artificial teeth for dental prostheses in acrylic resin by additive manufacturing and comparing the wear resistance with conventional prefabricated teeth, in vitro and English studies, without time restriction. And excluded if 1) do not make artificial teeth by additive manufacturing or that were metal or ceramic teeth; 2) clinical trials, animal studies, review articles, case reports, letters to the editor, short communication, book chapters; 3) another language that is not English. The selection was in two steps, reading the titles and abstracts, followed by reading the selected studies in full. The risk of bias analysis was performed with the adaptation of the quasi-experimental studies tool by Joanna Briggs Institute. Four hundred and twelve articles were found in the databases, after the selection steps and application of eligibility criteria, 6 articles were included for qualitative data analysis and presented low risk of bias. For teeth obtained by additive manufacturing, 2 studies reported lower wear resistance, 2 studies had higher resistance, and 2 similar compared to prefabricated ones. Additive manufactured teeth compared to prefabricated teeth show influences on wear resistance due to differences in material composition, relationship to the antagonist's tooth, applied force, chewing cycles, and processing methods.

Abstract
Microbial adhesion on dental restorative materials may jeopardize the restorative treatment long-term outcome. The goal of this in vitro study was to assess Candida albicans capability to adhere and form a biofilm on the surface of heat-cured dental composites having different formulations but subjected to identical surface treatments and polymerization protocols. Three commercially available composites were evaluated: GrandioSO (GR), Venus Diamond (VD) and Enamel Plus HRi Biofunction (BF). Cylindrical specimens were prepared for quantitative determination of C. albicans S5 planktonic CFU count, sessile cells CFU count and biomass optical density (OD570 nm). Qualitative Concanavalin-A assays (for extracellular polymeric substances of a biofilm matrix) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses (for the morphology of sessile colonies) were also performed. Focusing on planktonic CFU count, a slight but not significant reduction was observed with VD as compared to GR. Regarding sessile cells CFU count and biomass OD570 nm, a significant increase was observed for VD compared to GR and BF. Concanavalin-A assays and SEM analyses confirmed the quantitative results. Different formulations of commercially available resin composites may differently interact with C. albicans. The present results showed a relatively more pronounced antiadhesive effect for BF and GR, with a reduction in sessile cells CFU count and biomass quantification.

Abstract
Lithium disilicate (LDS) glass ceramics are among the most common biomaterials in conservative dentistry and prosthodontics, and their wear behavior is of paramount clinical interest. An innovative in vitro model is presented, which employs CAD/CAM technology to simulate the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The model aims to evaluate the effect of the abutment rigidity on the wear resistance of the LDS glass ceramic. Two experimental groups (LDS restorations supported by dental implants, named LDS-on-Implant, or by hybrid ceramic tooth replicas with artificial periodontal ligament, named LDS-on-Tooth-Replica) and a control group (LDS-Cylinders) were compared. Fifteen samples (n = 15) were fabricated for each group and subjected to testing, with LDS antagonistic cusps opposing them over 120,000 cycles using a dual axis chewing simulator. Wear resistance was analyzed by measuring the vertical wear depth (mm) and the volume loss (mm3) on each LDS sample, as well as the linear antagonist wear (mm) on LDS cusps. Mean values were calculated for LDS-Cylinders (0.186 mm, 0.322 mm3, 0.220 mm, respectively), LDS-on-Implant (0.128 mm, 0.166 mm3, 0.199 mm, respectively), and LDS-on-Tooth-Replica (0.098 mm, 0.107 mm3, 0.172 mm, respectively) and compared using one-way-ANOVA and Tukey's tests. The level of significance was set at 0.05 in all tests. Wear facets were inspected under a scanning electron microscope. Data analysis revealed that abutment rigidity was able to significantly affect the wear pattern of LDS, which seems to be more intense on rigid implant-abutment supports compared to resilient teeth replicas with artificial periodontal ligament.

Abstract
A common complication with the use of acrylic resin denture teeth is wear of the occlusal surfaces. Modifying the occlusal surfaces with gold onlays has been suggested to combat this phenomenon. This clinical report describes the use of zirconia as an alternative material on a patient with increased tendencies for occlusal wear. The advantages of using zirconia include wear resistance, decreased cost, and straightforward fabrication.

Abstract
Recent trends to improve the aesthetic properties-tooth-like color and translucency-of ceramic dental crowns have led to the development of yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) materials with higher stabilizer content. These 5Y-TZP materials contain more cubic or t' phase, which boosts translucency. The tradeoff as a consequence of a less transformable tetragonal phase is a significant reduction of strength and toughness compared to the standard 3Y-TZP composition. This study aims at determining the durability of such 5Y-TZP crowns under lab conditions simulating the conditions in the oral cavity during mastication and consumption of different nutrients. The test included up to 10,000 thermal cycles from 5 °C to 55 °C "from ice cream to coffee" and a chewing simulation representing 5 years of use applying typical loads. The investigation of the stress-affected zone at the surface indicates only a very moderate phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic after different varieties of testing cycles. The surface showed no indication of crack formation after testing. It can, therefore, be assumed that over the simulated period, dental crowns of 5Y-TZP are not prone to fatigue failure.

Abstract
This study investigated the two-body wear resistance of a first generation 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP), a second generation 3Y-TZP, a third generation 4 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (4Y-PSZ), a 5 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ), and a type III gold alloy (Aurocast 8), performed using opposing antagonistic cusps made out of the same material. Eight cylindrical specimens were prepared for each material (n = 8) for a total of forty specimens (N = 40). Conical cusps were fabricated for each material. Each cylinder−cusp pair was arranged inside a two-axis chewing simulator over up to 360,000 loading cycles. The wear resistance was analyzed by measuring the vertical substance loss (mm) and the volume loss (mm3). The antagonist wear (mm) was recorded before and after the wear test to evaluate the linear difference. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA); multiple comparisons were performed according to Tukey’s method. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) among the first generation 3Y-TZP, second generation 3Y-TZP, and 4Y-PSZ wear were found. 5Y-PSZ showed statistically significant higher wear compared to other the zirconias. Aurocast 8 displayed the highest values in terms of vertical wear, antagonist cusp wear, and volumetric loss. Although still not statistically comparable, the wear behavior of the latest 5Y-PSZ was the closest to the widely recognized gold standard represented by the type III gold alloy.

Abstract
A safe method to increase the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in patients with mild temporomandibular symptoms (such as tenderness upon palpation) is described. After a temporomandibular joint magnetic resonance (MR), an OVD increase was sought, pursuing pure rotational movement without condyle displacement. Prior to definitive rehabilitation, an additional MR confirmed steady and healthy condyle-disc-fossa relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the wear rate of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composites, polyetheretherketones and glass ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study groups were prepared from two different resin-based composites (Brillant Crios, Cerasmart), a glass ceramic (IPS Emax CAD) and reinforced polyetheretherketone (BioHPP) material (n = 10). Premolar teeth were used as antagonists. The specimens, which were subjected to two body wear tests (240,000 cycles, 1.2 Hz, 50N) in the chewing simulator, were scanned with a 3D laser scanner both before and after the wear test. Volume loss and wear depth were determined by means of the obtained images software program. The wear pattern was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Kruskal Wallis test served for analyzing. RESULTS The least volume loss and wear depth were seen in the polyetheretherketone material (0.06 ± 0.04 mm3 , 0.02 ± 0.01 mm), while the maximum volume loss was seen in the groups containing resin-based composite. (p = 0.05). The volume loss value in glass ceramics is between CAD/CAM composites and polyetheretherketone. CONCLUSION The behavior of polyetheretherketone against enamel was different from glass ceramics and composite materials in terms of the amount of wear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Polyetheretheketone can be considered as an alternative to other chairside materials in terms of wear resistance.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of ionizing irradiation on human enamel and zirconia after chewing simulation. METHODS Twenty enamel and twenty translucent Yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) specimens were divided in 4 groups: Co (control) - no irradiation on enamel cusps/opposing zirconia slabs; E70 - irradiated (70 Gray) enamel cusps/opposing irradiated enamel slabs; Z70 - irradiated zirconia cusps/opposing irradiated zirconia slabs; EZ70 - irradiated enamel cusps/opposing irradiated zirconia slabs. Cusps were abraded against slabs in a chewing simulator (CS - one million cycles, 80 N, artificial saliva, 37˚C). Wear and roughness of zirconia and enamel were analyzed using a stylus profilometer. The abraded enamel was analyzed by Electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and zirconia was characterized by nanoindentation and X-ray diffraction. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used for analysis of wear, Repeated Measures and Bonferroni test for roughness, and hardness and modulus values were compared using Wilcoxan Mann Whitney rank sum test (overall 5% significance). RESULTS Significantly higher volume loss was presented by cusps in the E70 group (p<0.001). Wear was similar between Co and EZ70 groups. There was no significant effect of irradiation on roughness of enamel or zirconia slabs (p=0.072). Irradiated Y-PSZ slabs had significantly higher hardness and modulus than non-irradiated ones and a 7% increase in m phase content was detected after irradiation. CONCLUSIONS The opposing surface characteristics played a more significant role on enamel wear than did ionizing radiation. However, radiation affects Y-PSZ crystalline composition, hardness and modulus of elasticity.

Abstract
This review focuses on the wear mechanisms of natural and restorative dental materials, presenting a comprehensive description and analysis of the works published in the last two decades on the wear at the interface of occlusal surfaces. Different groups of tribological pairs were considered: tooth-tooth, tooth-restorative material (tooth-ceramic, tooth-resin-based-materials, and tooth-metal), and restorative-restorative materials. The lack of standardization of the wear tests impairs the direct comparison of the obtained results. However, it was possible to infer about the main wear mechanisms observed on the different classes of dental materials. Concerning ceramics, their toughness and surface finishing determines the wear of antagonist tooth. Abrasion revealed to be the main wear mechanisms at occlusal interface. In the case of resin-based composites, the cohesion of the organic matrix and the nature, shape, and amount of filler particles greatly influences the dental wear. The protruding and detachment of the filler particles are the main causes of abrasion of antagonist enamel. Metallic materials induce lower wear on antagonist enamel than the other classes of materials, because of their low hardness and high ductility. Most of the studies revealed plastic deformation and adhesive wear as the main wear mechanisms. Overall, more research in this area is needed for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved at the occlusal surfaces wear. This would be essential for the development of more suitable restoration materials.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Clinical studies on the wear properties of different zirconia surfaces are lacking. Selecting a surface that causes and undergoes minimal wear will help improve clinical outcomes. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate and compare the wear over 1 year use of glazed zirconia (GZ) and polished zirconia (PZ) crowns opposing natural enamel and the wear of natural enamel opposing PZ and GZ crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective, split mouth, randomized clinical trial included 14 participants requiring complete coverage crowns on first molars, bilaterally, in a completely dentate mandibular arch. GZ and PZ crowns were cemented according to a randomization chart. Polyvinyl siloxane impressions were made immediately and 1 year after the cementation of the crowns. The respective casts were scanned by using a 3D scanner and a software program to measure the amount of linear wear of zirconia crowns and opposing natural teeth. Wear was observed in 8 groups: PZ crowns, GZ crowns, natural enamel opposing natural enamel in the molar and premolar regions (NE-M and NE-PM), natural enamel opposing PZ crowns in the molar region (NE-PZ-M), natural enamel opposing GZ crowns in the molar region (NE-GZ-M), natural enamel opposing PZ crowns in the premolar region (NE-PZ-PM), and natural enamel opposing GZ crowns in the premolar region (NE-GZ-PM). A descriptive analysis was followed by comparison between groups by using a repeated-measure ANOVA with post hoc adjustments (α=.05). RESULTS The mean wear (μm) observed was as follows (in ascending order): PZ crowns (13 ±3), NE-PM (13 ±1), GZ crowns (27 ±9), NE-M (34 ±3), NE-PZ-PM (44 ±18), NE-PZ-M (63 ±22), NE-GZ-PM (69 ±21), NE-GZ-M (113 ±33). Wear of GZ and PZ crowns was less than wear of NE-M. The difference was statistically significant when comparing PZ with NE-M (P<.001, CI=-17 to -24). Wear of NE-GZ-M and NE-PZ-M was higher than wear of NE-M, with a statistically significant difference (P<.001, CI=-49 to -107 and P =.004, CI=-8 to -49, respectively). Wear of NE-GZ-M was more than that of NE-PZ-M, and the difference was statistically significant (P<.001, CI=-68 to -32). Wear of NE-PZ-PM and NE-GZ-PM was also more than the wear of NE-PM, and the difference was statistically significant (P<.001, CI=-17 to -43 and P<.001, CI=-39 to -70). CONCLUSIONS PZ and GZ crowns wear substantially with time, with lesser wear observed in PZ crowns. PZ and GZ crowns also cause more wear in opposing natural enamel than natural enamel antagonists, with the highest wear caused by GZ crowns.

Abstract
Objectives To present a digital approach to measure and compare material wear behavior of antagonistic first molar restorations made of an experimental CAD/CAM composite (COMP) and lithium disilicate ceramic (LS2) in patients with reconstructed vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) after generalized hard tissue loss. Methods A total of 12 patients underwent complete full jaw rehabilitation with full occlusal coverage restorations made either of COMP or LS2. The first molar restorations (n = 48) were chosen for wear examination. At annual recall appointments, polyether impressions were taken, and resulting plaster casts were digitalized using a laboratory scanner. Mean observation period was 371 days for first and 769 days for second year. The resulting 96 datasets were analyzed by superimposition of 3-D datasets using an iterative best-fit method. Based on the superimposition data, the wear rates of the occlusal contact areas (OCAs) were calculated. Results For antagonistic restorations made of COMP, the average wear rate was 24.8 ± 13.3 μm/month, while for LS2, it was 9.5 ± 4.3 μm/month in first year, with significant differences (p < 0.0001) between the materials. In second year, monthly wear rates decreased significantly for both materials: COMP (16.2 ± 10.7 μm/month) and LS2 (5.5 ± 3.3 μm/month). Statistical comparison between wear time showed significant differences for both materials: COMP p < 0.037 and LS2 p < 0.001. A logarithmic fit (COMP R2 = 0.081; LS2 R2 = 0.038) of the data was calculated to estimate the wear progression. Significance In patients with reconstructed VDO, restorations made of LS2 show a more stable wear behavior than ones out of experimental CAD/CAM composite. In cases of complete rehabilitation, load bearing CAD/CAM-composite restorations should be critically considered for application due to their occlusal wear behavior. However, when choosing a restorative material, not only the functional occlusal stability should be taken into account but also the prospect of minimally invasive treatment with maximum preservation of natural tooth structures.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this laboratory study was to compare the two-body wear resistance of different restorative materials commonly used for the indirect restoration of posterior teeth. The tested materials, based on ceramic (Imagine Press X, IPS e.max CAD, Milled Celtra Duo, Glaze-Fired Celtra Duo, Vita Mark II) and composite (Enamel Plus HRi, Enamel Plus HRi Bio-Function, Filtek Supreme XTE, Lava Ultimate), were compared with the wear properties of a type III gold alloy (Aurocast 8). Flat samples were prepared with a 6-mm thickness (n=10). Composite samples were tested after a heat polymerization cycle. All samples were exposed to a two-body wear test in a dual axis chewing simulator performing over 120,000 loading cycles. The opposing abrader cusps were fabricated from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal. The vertical substance loss (mm) and the volume loss (mm3) were recorded, as was the wear of the antagonist cusp (mm). Mean values were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Significant differences among materials were detected. The heat-cured resin-based composite material Enamel Plus Bio-Function and the type III gold alloy demonstrated similar mean values for wear depth and volumetric loss.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the influence of crown material (lithium-disilicate, 3Y-TZP zirconia) and abutment type (rigid implant, resin tooth with artificial periodontium) on wear performance of their antagonist teeth and adjacent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS A mandibular left first molar (#36) with adjacent human teeth (mandibular left second premolar: #35, mandibular left second molar: #37) and antagonistic human teeth (maxillary left second premolar: #25, maxillary left first molar: #26, maxillary left second molar: #27) was prepared simulating a section of the jaw. Samples were made with extracted human molars (Reference), crowned implants (Implant), or crowned resin tooth analogues (Tooth). Crowns (tooth #36; n = 16/material) were milled from lithium-disilicate (Li, IPS e.max CAD) or 3Y-TZP zirconia (Zr, IPS e.max ZirCAD, both Ivoclar Vivadent). Thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML) in the chewing simulator were applied simulating 15 years of clinical service. Wear traces were analyzed (frequency [n], depth [µm]) and evaluated using scanning electron pictures. Wear results were compared by one-way-ANOVA and post-hoc-Bonferroni (α = 0.05). RESULTS After TCML, no visible wear traces were found on Zr. Li showed more wear traces (n = 30–31) than the reference (n = 21). Antagonistic teeth #26 showed more wear traces in contact to both ceramics (n = 27–29) than to the reference (n = 21). Strong wear traces (> 350 µm) on antagonists and their adjacent teeth were found only in crowned groups. Abutment type influenced number and depth of wear facets on the antagonistic and adjacent teeth. CONCLUSION The clinically relevant model with human antagonistic and adjacent teeth allowed for a limited comparison of the wear situation. The total number of wear traces and strong wear on crowns, antagonistic and adjacent teeth were influenced by crown material.

Abstract
The introduction of adhesive techniques in combination with translucent restorative materials has greatly influenced treatment concepts in fixed prosthodontics. Modern production technologies offer access to new polymer materials that provide innovative pre-treatment options for complex prosthetic rehabilitations. Additionally, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) provides access to new ceramic types and thus extends the range of indications for metal-free restorative options. With these developments, important changes of treatment concepts in fixed prosthodontics have occurred which affect the professional life of dental practitioners with a focus on prosthetic dentistry. This article gives an overview of the advances in selected fields of fixed prosthodontics and provides support in material selection for different kinds of indications, from single-tooth restorations to fixed dental prostheses.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to update the knowledge concerning the wear, translucency, as well as clinical performance of monolithic zirconia ceramics, aiming at highlighting their advantages and weaknesses through data presented in recent literature. New ultra-translucent and multicolor monolithic zirconia ceramics present considerably improved aesthetics and translucency, which, according to the literature reviewed, is similar to those of the more translucent lithium disilicate ceramics. A profound advantage is their high strength at thin geometries preserving their mechanical integrity. Based on the reviewed articles, monolithic zirconia ceramics cause minimal wear of antagonists, especially if appropriately polished, although no evidence still exists regarding the ultra-translucent compositions. Concerning the survival of monolithic zirconia restorations, the present review demonstrates the findings of the existing short-term studies, which reveal promising results after evaluating their performance for up to 5 or 7 years. Although a significant increase in translucency has been achieved, new translucent monolithic zirconia ceramics have to be further evaluated both in vitro and in vivo for their long-term potential to preserve their outstanding properties. Due to limited studies evaluating the wear properties of ultra-translucent material, no sound conclusions can be made, whereas well-designed clinical studies are urgently needed to enlighten issues of prognosis and long-term survival.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the wear properties of opposed dental ceramic restorative CAD/CAM materials and several posterior direct restorative composite resins. Three kinds of dental ceramics CAD/CAM materials (monolithic zirconia, lithium disilicate, leucite) and four dental composite resins—that is, MI Gracefil, Gradia Direct P, Estelite Σ Quick, and Filtek Supreme Ultra—were used in this study. For each of the 12 groups (three ceramics × four composite resins), five each of a canine-shaped ceramic specimen and a cuboidal shape opposing composite resin were prepared. All of the specimens were tested in a thermomechanical loading machine (50 N, 100,000 cycles, 5/55 °C). Wear losses of ceramic specimens and composite resin specimens were evaluated using a three-dimensional profiling system and an electronic scale, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Mann–Whitney U test with Bonferroni’s correction. Zirconia showed significantly less volumetric loss than lithium disilicate or leucite regardless of composite resin type (p > 0.05/3 = 0.017), and that Estelite Σ Quick showed significantly more weight loss than Filtek Supreme Ultra, MI Gracefil, or Gradia Direct P regardless of ceramic type (p > 0.05/6 = 0.083). Zirconia showed less volumetric loss than lithium disilicate or leucite. Some composite resins opposing ceramics showed considerable weight loss.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM An assessment of the evidence for the antagonist enamel wear of tooth-supported monolithic zirconia posterior crowns is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and summarize clinical studies related to the antagonist enamel wear of tooth-supported monolithic zirconia posterior crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library searches were performed and complemented by manual searches from database inception to December 25, 2017, for title and abstract analysis. RESULTS Initially, 198 articles were obtained through database searches. Twenty-one articles were selected for full-text analysis, and 5 studies met the inclusion criteria. Because of the heterogeneity in design, surface treatment, measurement methods, and wear parameters, a meta-analysis was not possible. The selected studies were analyzed regarding the antagonist natural enamel wear of zirconia, measurement methods, and surface treatment. The results of the antagonist enamel wear varied widely, which made comparing them scientifically with absolute values difficult. CONCLUSIONS This review indicated that the antagonist enamel wear of zirconia was similar to or more than that of natural teeth but less than that of metal-ceramics. Additional properly designed, longer follow-up clinical trials with larger sample sizes are needed to evaluate the antagonist enamel wear of monolithic zirconia crowns in vivo.
