Abstract
BACKGROUND High concentrations of NEFA relative to a defined reference or 'cut-point' values before calving can predict the risk of specific or collective periparturient disease events. OBJECTIVES A field-based cohort study was conducted to evaluate the value and critical points of serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) at the precalving time to predict the occurrence of postpartum diseases and reproductive performance in dairy cows. METHODS Blood samples were taken from 521 high-yielding dairy cows at 1 week (±3 days) before calving and NEFA levels were measured. Health and reproduction information of each cow includes dystocia, retained placenta, milk fever, metritis, mastitis, pregnancy in the first insemination and pregnancy in the first two inseminations, and culling in the first 60 days of lactation and milk production. RESULTS Our results show that there are significant relationships between precalving NEFA with the probability of pregnancy at the first and the first two inseminations after calving. The cows that had NEFA concentrations less than 0.5 mmol/L at the last week of pregnancy were 3.51 and 3.15 times more likely to be pregnant at first insemination and the first two inseminations, respectively. Also, our results showed that there are significant relationships between precalving NEFA concentration and the likelihood of dystocia and milk fever. The probability of dystocia and milk fever occurrence were 2.56 and 1.91 times greater in those cows that had NEFA concentrations more than 0.3 mmol/L, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The present results indicated that Increasing NEFA during the prepartum period could adversely affect the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine asprosin levels in cows, the relationship of this hormone with postpartum disorders and β-hydroxybutyric acid, and also the potential of asprosin to be a marker for postpartum diseases. The study was designed as a two-stage trial. In the first stage, blood asprosin and β-hydroxybutyric acid levels of 20 healthy Simmental cows aged 3-4 years were measured at the time of calving, and on days 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 postpartum. In the second stage, 200 cows were divided into two groups: (1) healthy (n = 100) and (2) diseased (placental retention, hypocalcaemia, metritis, lameness, abomasal displacement, mastitis; n = 100); asprosin and β-hydroxybutyric acid concentrations of the blood were assessed on day 15 postpartum. In conclusion, the asprosin level was found to be at measurable levels in cows, and a negative correlation with β-hydroxybutyric acid was found. According to these findings, the data obtained from this study could be used for the prevention, control and treatment of some postpartum disorders associated with ketosis and for developing novel hypotheses concerning the actions of this hormone. It was concluded that further studies are required to reveal the associations between asprosin and postpartum disorders.

Abstract
Since the approval by the European Medicines Agency in 2013 of a monensin controlled-release capsule (CRC) for the prevention of ketosis in dairy cows, there has been widespread use across Europe. In recent decades, several papers have investigated the effects of monensin used as a CRC or as a feed additive to improve cattle energy metabolism and improve feed efficiency. Since the CRC is the only form of monensin permitted in Europe in dairy cows, the objective of this review was to report and summarize observations from the literature on the effects of this treatment in transition cows. The peer-reviewed literature published from 1997 was scanned, and papers written in English were evaluated for eligibility. Only papers evaluating the use of monensin in dairy cows for the prevention of ketosis during the transition period were reviewed. In total, 42 papers met the required criteria and were included in this review. The major findings focused on cow metabolism and health, rumen fermentation and milk production and quality. Overall, the review of the existing literature confirmed that monensin delivered as a CRC during the transition period has effects of different magnitude compared to other forms, doses or durations of administration. Studies agree on the antiketotic effects of this treatment, showing evidence of an increased propionate production in the rumen, reduced blood β-hydroxybutyrate, and improved liver function in treated cows, mainly resulting in reduced incidence of peripartum disease. On the contrary, the effects of CRC on ammonia production and rumen microflora are less robust than those reported for other forms. Of importance for the European market is the well-documented absence of any negative impact on milk and cheese production and composition using the CRC treatment.

Abstract
Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of prepartum monensin supplementation and dry-period nutritional strategy on the postpartum productive performance of cows fed monensin during lactation. A total of 102 Holstein cows were enrolled in the experiment (32 primiparous and 70 multiparous). The study was a completely randomized design, with randomization restricted to balance for parity, body condition score, and expected calving date. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of prepartum treatments was used; the variables of interest were prepartum feeding strategy [controlled-energy diet throughout the dry period (CE) vs. controlled-energy diet from dry-off to 22 d before expected parturition, followed by a moderate-energy close-up diet from d 21 before expected parturition through parturition (CU)] and prepartum monensin supplementation [0 g/t (control, CON) or 24.2 g/t (MON); Rumensin; Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN]. Lactation diets before and after the dry period contained monensin at 15.4 g/t. During the close-up period, cows fed CU had greater DM and NEL intakes than cows fed CE. Calf BW at birth tended to be greater for cows fed CU than for those fed CE but was not affected by MON supplementation. Diet did not affect calving difficulty score, but cows supplemented with MON had an increased calving difficulty score. We found a tendency for a MON × parity interaction for colostral IgG concentration, such that multiparous MON cows tended to have lower IgG concentration than CON cows, but colostral IgG concentration for primiparous MON and CON cows did not differ. Postpartum milk yield did not differ between diets but tended to be greater for cows supplemented with MON. Milk fat and lactose content were greater for cows fed CU than for those fed CE, and lactose content and yield were increased for cows supplemented with MON. Solids-corrected and fat-corrected milk yields were increased by MON supplementation, but were not affected by diet. Overall means for postpartum DMI did not differ by diet or MON supplementation. The CU diet decreased the concentration of nonesterified fatty acids during the close-up period but increased it postpartum. Neither diet nor monensin affected β-hydroxybutyrate or liver composition. Overall, postpartum productive performance differed little between prepartum dietary strategies, but cows fed MON had greater energy-corrected milk production. In herds fed monensin during lactation, monensin should also be fed during the dry period.

Abstract
The transition from pregnancy to lactation is the most challenging period for high-producing dairy cows. The liver plays a key role in biological adaptation during the peripartum. Prior works have demonstrated that hepatic glucose synthesis, cholesterol metabolism, lipogenesis, and inflammatory response are increased or activated during the peripartum in dairy cows; however, those works were limited by a low number of animals used or by the use of microarray technology, or both. To overcome such limitations, an RNA sequencing analysis was performed on liver biopsies from 20 Holstein cows at 7 ± 5d before (Pre-P) and 16 ± 2d after calving (Post-P). We found 1,475 upregulated and 1,199 downregulated differently expressed genes (DEG) with a false discovery rate adjusted P-value < 0.01 between Pre-P and Post-P. Bioinformatic analysis revealed an activation of the metabolism, especially lipid, glucose, and amino acid metabolism, with increased importance of the mitochondria and a key role of several signaling pathways, chiefly peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor (PPAR) and adipocytokines signaling. Fatty acid oxidation and gluconeogenesis, with a likely increase in amino acid utilization to produce glucose, were among the most important functions revealed by the transcriptomic adaptation to lactation in the liver. Although gluconeogenesis was induced, data indicated decrease in expression of glucose transporters. The analysis also revealed high activation of cell proliferation but inhibition of xenobiotic metabolism, likely due to the liver response to inflammatory-like conditions. Co-expression network analysis disclosed a tight connection and coordination among genes driving biological processes associated with protein synthesis, energy and lipid metabolism, and cell proliferation. Our data confirmed the importance of metabolic adaptation to lipid and glucose metabolism in the liver of early Post-P cows, with a pivotal role of PPAR and adipocytokines.

Abstract
The number of Jersey cows in the United States has been steadily increasing in recent years according to Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding statistics. To help producers reduce the risk of health disorders in their Jersey animals, Zoetis has developed genomic predictions for wellness traits in Jersey cattle using producer-recorded data. The traits included mastitis (MAST), metritis, retained placenta, displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis, lameness, and milk fever in cows and respiratory disease, scours, and calf livability (DEAD) in calves. Phenotypic data on health events, pedigree, and genotypes were collected directly from producers upon obtaining their permission. Each trait was defined as a binary event, having a value of 1 if an animal has been recorded with a disorder and 0 otherwise. The number of phenotypic records ranged from 216,166 for DA to 628,958 for MAST for cow traits and from 186,505 for scours to 380,429 for DEAD for calf traits. The number of genotyped animals was 41,271. All traits were analyzed using a univariate threshold animal model. The model for cow wellness traits included the fixed effect of parity and random effects of herd × year × season of calving, animal, and permanent environment. The model for calf wellness traits included the fixed effect of year of birth × calving season × region and random effects of herd × year of birth and animal. A total of 45,163 SNP were used in genomic analyses. Animals genotyped with low-density chips were imputed to the required number of markers. All analyses were based on the single-step genomic BLUP. Heritabilities ranged from 0.061 for DA to 0.120 for lameness. Predicted transmitting abilities were expressed in percentage points as deviations from the average estimated probability of a disorder in the base population. Reliabilities of genomic predicted transmitting abilities had average values between 32% (DA) and 51% (MAST and DEAD). The results indicate that a direct evaluation of cow and calf wellness traits under a genomic threshold model is feasible and offers predictions with average reliabilities comparable with other lowly heritable traits for Jersey cattle.

Abstract
The first issue of the Journal of Dairy Science in 1917 opened with the text of the speech by Raymond A. Pearson, president of the Iowa State College of Agriculture, at the dedication of the new dairy building at the University of Nebraska (J. Dairy Sci. 1:4-18, 1917). Fittingly, this was the birth of a new research facility and more importantly, the beginning of a new journal devoted to the sciences of milk production and manufacture of products from milk. Metabolic modifiers of dairy cow metabolism enhance, change, or interfere with normal metabolic processes in the ruminant digestive tract or alter postabsorption partitioning of nutrients among body tissues. Papers on metabolic modifiers became more frequent in the journal around 1950. Dairy farming changed radically between 1955 and 1965. Changes in housing and feeding moved more cows outside, and cows and heifers in all stages of lactation, including the dry period, were fed as a single group. Rations became wetter with the shift to corn silage as the major forage in many rations. Liberal grain feeding met the requirements of high-producing cows and increased production per cow but introduced new challenges; for example, managing and feeding cows as a group. These changes led to the introduction of new strategies that identified and expanded the use of metabolic modifiers. Research was directed at characterizing the new problems for the dairy cow created by group feeding. Metabolic modifiers went beyond feeding the cow and included environmental and housing factors and additives to reduce the incidence and severity of many new conditions and pathologies. New collaborations began among dairy cattle specialties that broadened our understanding of the workings of the cow. The Journal of Dairy Science then and now plays an enormously important role in dissemination of the findings of dairy scientists worldwide that address existing and new technologies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to test whether a combination of plant bioactive lipid compounds (also termed ‘essential oils’) and biotin (PBLC+B) could decrease the mobilization of body reserves and ketosis incidence in postpartum dairy cows. We compared non-supplemented control (CON) cows with cows receiving monensin (MON) as a controlled-release capsule at d -21, and with cows receiving PBLC+B from day (d) -21 before calving until calving (Phase 1) and further until d 37 after calving (Phase 2), followed by PBLC+B discontinuation from d 38 to d 58 (Phase 3). The PBLC+B cows had higher body weight and higher back fat thickness than CON cows and lesser body weight change than MON and CON cows in Phase 3. Body condition score was not different among groups. Milk protein concentration tended to be higher on the first herd test day in PBLC+B vs. CON cows. Milk fat concentration tended to be highest in PBLC+B cows throughout Phases 2 and 3, with significantly higher values in PBLC+B vs. MON cows on the second herd test day. Yields of energy-corrected milk were higher in PBLC+B vs. CON and MON cows in Phase 2 and higher in PBLC+B and MON cows vs. CON cows in Phase 3. The incidence of subclinical ketosis was 83%, 61% and 50% in CON, PBLC+B and MON cows, respectively, with lower mean β-hydroxybutyrate values in MON than in PBLC+B cows in Phase 1 prepartum. The serum triglyceride concentration was higher in PBLC+B vs. CON cows on d 37. No differences were observed in serum glucose, urea, non-esterified fatty acids, cholesterol and bilirubin concentrations. Aspartate transaminase and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase but not glutamate dehydrogenase activities tended to be highest in MON and lowest in PBLC+B in Phase 2. We conclude that PBLC+B prevent body weight loss after parturition and are associated with similar ketosis incidence and partly higher yields of energy-corrected milk compared to MON supplementation of dairy cows.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary starch level and monensin on immune function. Prior to parturition, primiparous (n=21) and multiparous (n=49) Holstein cows were fed a common controlled energy close-up diet with a daily topdress of either 0 or 400 mg/d monensin. From 1 to 21 d in milk (DIM), cows were fed a high-starch (HS; 26.2% starch) or low-starch (LS; 21.5% starch) total mixed ration with a daily topdress of either 0 or 450 mg of monensin/d continuing with prepartum topdress assignment. From 22 through 63 DIM, all cows were fed HS and continued with assigned topdress treatment until 63 DIM. Endometrial cytology and whole-blood immune function were assessed at 8 DIM and on 1 d between 40 and 60 DIM. At 8 DIM, cows fed HS had an increased percentage (%) of phagocytic monocytes and tended to have a greater phagocytosis index (% of positive cells × mean fluorescence intensity) in monocytes compared with cows fed LS. At 8 DIM, cows fed HS also tended to have a higher percentage of monocytes involved in oxidative burst and a higher monocyte oxidative burst index compared with LS cows. At 8 DIM, blood polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) isolated from cows fed monensin during the periparturient period tended to have higher PMN glycogen content compared with control cows. At 40 to 60 DIM, the incidence of cytological endometritis as diagnosed by uterine cytology was not affected by dietary treatment. However, at 40 to 60 DIM, cows fed monensin had an increased percentage of Escherichia coli-stimulated PMN, tended to have a greater percentage of monocytes involved in oxidative burst, and tended to have an increased E. coli-stimulated monocyte oxidative burst index. At 40 to 60 DIM, blood PMN isolated from cows fed HS during early lactation had higher PMN glycogen content compared with cows fed LS during early lactation. Overall, results suggest that feeding higher starch diets postpartum and peripartal supplementation with monensin may have some beneficial effects on immune function, although uterine cytology was not affected by treatment.

Abstract
Here, we investigated the effect of liver abnormality on the developmental potential of
bovine oocytes. Good quality oocytes from healthy cows and from animals with a liver
abnormality were matured and fertilized in vitro and then cultured to the
blastocyst stage. On day 7 after fertilization, embryo cleavage and development were
assessed. The concentrations of glucose, nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), γ-glutamyl
transpeptidase (γ-GTP), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) and glutathione were measured in
follicular fluids (FF). The proportion of good quality oocytes and the frequency of
development to the blastocyst stage were lower in the liver anomaly group than those of
the control group (P<0.05). The concentrations of γ-GTP and BHBA in the FF of the liver
anomaly group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). The concentration
of glutathione in the FF of the liver anomaly group was lower than that of the control
group (P<0.05). Moreover, there was a negative correlation between these concentrations
and the proportions of oocytes that developed to the blastocyst stage (P<0.05).
Supplementation of the culture medium with γ-GTP or BHBA did not affect the rate of oocyte
maturation but did cause a concentration-dependent reduction in the frequency of
fertilized oocytes that developed to the blastocyst stage. Our findings indicate that the
quality of oocytes and their potential for development are lower in cattle with liver
disorders than those in healthy cattle; one possible cause may be the high concentration
of γ-GTP and/or BHBA in their FF.

Abstract
In order to decipher the amino acid (AA) balance in the dairy cattle with left displaced abomasum (LDA), blood samples were obtained from thirty LDA and 12 healthy control cattle. Plasma from LDA cattle exhibited significantly higher free fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyrate, lower glucogenic AA, such as methionine, alanine and serine, and higher ratio of ketogenic AA among blood free AA, such as leucine and lysine. The Fischer ratio, phenylalanine and albumin were similar to control cattle. These results suggested that LDA cattle were in negative energy balance, but AA metabolism and protein synthesis were within a normal range. Lower glucogenic AA was due to the higher gluconeogenesis, and higher ketogenic AA was due to higher ketogenesis.

Abstract
Twenty-four Holstein dairy cows were used to evaluate the singular and combined effects of different level of crude protein and monensin treatments during the early lactation on digestion and milk yield of dairy cows. The experiment was designed as completely randomized with a 3x2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The factors were three Concentrations of CP supplement (19.5, 21.4 and 23.4% of dry matter) and two levels of monensin (0 and 350 mg per cow per day). This experiment consist of three periods and each period was 3 week in length. Monensin did not affect DMI, milk yield, lactose and SNF but it reduced milk fat and protein percentage. Monensin premix significantly decreased rumen ammonia but rumen pH and microbial protein synthesis was not affected by monensin treatment. Although, Monensin treatment increased apparent digestibility of DM, NDF, ADF, CP, but they were not significantly. Increasing dietary CP, improved milk and protein production, but did not alter the other components of milk. Digestibility of NDF, ADF, CP were improved by increasing dietary CP. Increasing diet CP from 19.5 to 21.4% did not significantly increase ruminal ammonia, but increasing to 23.4% have significant effect on it. There was a linear relationship between level of crud protein in the diet and urine volume excretion. Microbial protein synthesis was affected by increasing CP level; on this way maximum protein synthesis was achieved in 21.4% CP.

Abstract
The object of this study was to evaluate the impact of monensin administration on the early lactation performance of cows maintained on a high-energy diet, and on health traits during the transition period. Cows (n = 168; parity 3.3 +/- 1.4, initial body condition score 3.1 +/- 0.08, and milk yield of 34.3 kg/d +/- 0.9 for multiparous cows in the preceding lactation) were divided into control and monensin treatment groups. A controlled-release capsule supplying 335 mg of monensin/d for 95 d was inserted into the rumen of monensin-treated cows 30 d before the expected calving. Blood samples were obtained 2 h after feeding on d 14 prepartum and on d 7, 14, and 50 postpartum. Plasma glucose concentration was 3% higher (58 +/- 0.5 vs. 56.4 +/- 0.5 mg/dL) and beta-hydroxybutyric acid was 17% (6.7 +/- 0.3 vs. 8.0 +/- 0.3 mg/dL) lower in monensin-treated than control cows. Plasma glucose was 10% higher (60.0 +/- 0.6 vs. 54.5 +/- 0.3 mg/dL) and beta-hydroxybutyric acid was 16% lower (6.8 +/- 0.3 vs. 7.9 +/- 0.2 mg/dL) in primiparous than multiparous cows. Plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentration (measured only in primiparous cows) was 17% lower (287 +/- 15 vs. 336 +/- 17 muEq/L) in treated than in control cows. Rate of ketosis incidence was 60% lower (8 vs. 21%) in monensin-treated than in control cows, and the proportion of control cows that required a supply of glucogenic precursors was 3-fold higher than in monensin-treated cows. The body condition score was 3.1 +/- 0.05, 2.7 +/- 0.05, and 2.4 +/- 0.05 on d 60 prepartum and d 7 and 50 postpartum, respectively, and was not affected by treatment. During the first 5 mo of lactation, milk yield was 7% higher (37.6 +/- 0.6 vs. 35.2 +/- 0.6 kg/d) in monensin-treated cows than in control cows. Our results showed that monensin administration, as a controlled-release capsule in prepartum cows, can be beneficial, even if these cows are maintained on a high-energy diet during the subsequent lactation.

Abstract
Thirty-four multiparous Holstein cows were used in a randomized block design to evaluate the effects of feeding nonforage fiber sources (NFFS), monensin, or their combination on expression of gluconeogenic enzymes in the liver during the transition to lactation. The addition of 0 or 300 mg/d of monensin to a conventional (CONV) or NFFS prepartum diet was evaluated in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The NFFS diet was formulated by replacing 30% of the forage component of the CONV diet with cottonseed hulls and soyhulls. The CONV and NFFS basal diets were fed at dry-off and continued through parturition. Monensin was fed from -28 d relative to calving (DRTC) through parturition. At calving, all cows were placed on the same diet. Liver biopsy samples obtained at -28, -14, +1, +14, and +28 DRTC were used to determine pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-C) mRNA expression. Feeding NFFS resulted in greater (P < 0.05) prepartum DMI compared with the CONV diet. There was no effect of prepartum diets on postpartum DMI or average milk production to 56 d of lactation. Expression of PC mRNA was elevated (P < 0.05) at 1 d postpartum, but there was no effect of NFFS or monensin on PC mRNA abundance. Expression of PEPCK-C mRNA at calving was increased (P < 0.05) with prepartum monensin feeding. The data indicate that feeding monensin to transition cows induces hepatic PEPCK-C mRNA expression before calving. The increased expression of hepatic PEPCK-C mRNA with monensin feeding suggests a feed-forward mechanism of metabolic control in ruminants that links molecular control of gluconeogenesis with the profile of rumen fermentation end products.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of retained fetal membranes (RFM) on serum minerals and energy- and protein-related metabolites in dairy cows at a herd with a recent history of fatty liver syndrome. Forty-seven multiparous Holstein cows were selected during transition period. Nine cows had RFM longer than 24 h after calving. Blood samples were obtained on prepartum days 21 and 7 and postpartum days 7 and 21. We used repeated measure procedure of anova to evaluate the effect of RFM on serum metabolites. Cows with RFM had significantly higher concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acids and triglycerides after calving, but had lower concentrations of cholesterol during transition period. The concentrations of serum albumin and blood urea nitrogen were also significantly lower in RFM-affected cows than non-affected ones after parturition. Our results suggested that negative energy balance (NEB) postpartum was associated with RFM in dairy cattle. However, our findings did not reveal a cause and effect relationship with respect to the role of NEB as a possible risk factor for RFM.

Abstract
Liver metabolism and health in dairy cows during the periparturient period are affected by plane of nutrition prepartum. Long-term adaptations in hepatic gene expression are important for complete understanding of liver function. We examined temporal gene expression profiles during the dry period and early lactation in liver of Holstein cows fed moderate dietary energy ad libitum or restricted during the entire dry period using a microarray consisting of 7,872 annotated cattle cDNA inserts and quantitative RT-PCR. We identified 85 genes with expression patterns that were affected by level of energy intake prepartum over time. Restricted energy intake prepartum resulted in more pronounced upregulation of genes with key functions in hepatic fatty acid oxidation ( CPT1A, ADIPOR2), gluconeogenesis ( PC), and cholesterol synthesis ( SC4MOL). Ad libitum feeding upregulated a number of genes associated with liver triacylglycerol synthesis ( DGAT1) and proinflammatory cytokines ( TNFAIP3). Genomic responses to ad libitum feeding were accompanied by increased incorporation of palmitate to esterified products in vitro and increased liver triacylglycerol concentration in vivo. Overall, gene expression profiles due to plane of nutrition prepartum partly explained differences in rates of liver palmitate metabolism, blood serum metabolite concentrations, and liver tissue triacylglycerol concentration. Our data show that moderate overfeeding of energy in the dry period, in the absence of obesity, results in transcriptional changes predisposing cows to fatty liver and perhaps compromising overall liver health during the periparturient period. In this context, controlled energy intake may confer an advantage to the cow by triggering hepatic molecular adaptations well ahead of parturition.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a monensin controlled-release capsule on the incidence of retained fetal membranes (RFM), milk yield and conception rate at first service (CRFS). The study was conducted during May to August 2004 in a large dairy herd in Chihuahua, Mexico. Cows (n = 2,025) from 20 to 30 d before expected parturition were randomly assigned to either a treatment or a control group. The treated group (n = 1,010) received orally a capsule of monensin that released 335 mg/d for 95 d. Control cows (no capsule, n = 1,015) were randomly assigned and matched by parity. Outcome variables were the incidence of RFM, first three test day milk and CRFS. Monensin decreased the incidence of RFM by 3.9% only in multiparous cows. Therefore, multiparous cows treated with monensin were 0.78 times (95% C.I. = 0.71-0.86) as likely as control multiparous cows to develop RFM. Overall, milk yield was negatively affected by the RFM condition, but it was improved by monensin only in multiparous cows with RFM at test day 1. Conception rate at first service was depressed by 10.6% in multiparous cows with RFM. However, in RFM cows treated with monensin, CRFS improved to the level of treated cows without RFM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of a controlled-release monensin capsule administered at cessation of lactation on incidence of calving-related disorders, fertility, and milk yield in dairy cows. ANIMALS 290 dairy cows treated with monensin and 290 untreated control cows. PROCEDURE Treated cows received a capsule that released monensin at 335 mg/d for 95 days. Incidence of calving-related disorders; daily milk yield up to 20 days postpartum; test-day milk yield, fat, protein, and mature-equivalent 305-day milk production; and body condition score at calving were determined. Reproductive variables were conception rate at first service, pregnancy rate, and calving-to-conception interval. RESULTS Cows treated with monensin were 2.1 times as likely to develop dystocia and 0.8 times as likely to develop metritis as control cows. For milk yield, there was an interaction of treatment X time X parity. In multiparous cows, monensin significantly improved milk yield at test days 4 and 7. In addition, monensin increased body condition score at calving. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Despite increasing the likelihood of developing dystocia and metritis, administration of monensin improved the lactational performance of multiparous cows and may be a promising additive for use at the time of cessation of lactation.

Abstract
Lameness of dairy cattle fed predominantly on pasture is increasingly recognised as one of the most costly disease conditions affecting dairy herds in New Zealand and Australia. Numerous risk factors are involved in the aetiology of claw lameness, including environment and factors associated with the conformation of individual cows. The role of nutrition requires further definition. Australasian pastures are characterised by low levels of fibre and effective fibre, rapid rates of fibre degradation, high water content, and high concentrations of rumen degradable protein during the autumn, winter and spring months. Relationships between high-quality vegetative pastures and ruminal acidosis may increase the risk of laminitis, particularly where pasture is supplemented with grains or other feeds containing significant amounts of starch. This article reviews the incidence, prevalence and pathophysiology of ruminal acidosis and laminitis and considers mechanisms by which acidosis may occur in pasture-fed cows. Techniques for diagnosing ruminal acidosis are reviewed, and practical strategies to avoid it are proposed. Currently, there is little information on the incidence and prevalence of ruminal acidosis and laminitis in pasture-fed cattle. The evidence gathered in this review suggests that ruminal acidosis and laminitis should be considered in the aetiology of lameness in pasture-fed dairy herds.

Abstract
Associations of herd milk production and management variables to a return-over-feed (ROF) herd profit index were examined among 95 dairy farms. The ROF index is derived from 2 important determinants of profit on dairy farms: milk income and feed cost. All producers were participants in the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) ROF program in Ontario, Canada during 2002. Nutrition, housing, health, and other management data were collected through a phone survey of herd managers. Herd milk production, milk component percentages, and somatic cell count data were obtained from the Ontario DHI database. The linear regression model accounting for significant variation in ROF with highest R2 (0.66) included standardized milk production, milk protein percentage, milk fat percentage, and use of monensin in lactating cow rations. A 1-kg increase in standardized milk production (kg/d per cow) or a 0.1 percentage unit increase in milk protein was associated with $0.35/d per cow or $0.26/d per cow increase, respectively, in the ROF of the dairy herd. However, a 0.1 percentage unit increase in milk fat was associated with a $0.10/d per cow decrease in ROF, probably because of a negative association of milk fat with milk yield. Use of monensin in lactating cow rations was associated with a $0.39/d per cow increase in ROF. In a separate model (R2 = 0.27) that examined management factors independent of production variables, herds using 3 times daily milking had a $1.25/d per cow higher ROF vs. herds using twice daily, whereas use of an Escherichia coli mastitis vaccine was associated with $0.59/d per cow higher ROF. Production-related variables accounted for more variation in the ROF index than management variables, and the latter, e.g., use of monensin, only marginally increased R2 of production-based regression models.

Abstract
This study aimed to validate a previously developed model for the estimation of energy balance in high producing dairy cows from test day information during the first 12 wk of lactation. Monensin (an ionophor) increases the energy status of dairy cows. Gold standard for the validation was a higher energy status, indicated by lower blood ketone body concentrations, lower percent milk fat, and higher milk-yield of monensin-supplemented than control cows in 8 randomized block design feeding trials. Estimated energy intake (eE(intake)) was calculated as estimated energy balance (eEB) plus energy in actual milk produced (in units of MJ(nel)) plus a constant or variable amount of energy required for maintenance. The variable amount was based on BW, while the constant was the average BW in each parity group (1, 2, 3, 4+). Both eEB and eE(intake) were compared between groups of cows with and without monensin supplementation (n = 600 lactations). The trials started with a presupplement period during lactation wk 2 to 5 followed by a supplementation period during lactation wk 6 to 12. During the presupplement period, both eEB and eE(intake) were similar for all cows. At 2, 3, and 8 wk after starting the monensin supplementation, the eEB of the supplemented cows was significantly higher, while eE(intake) was significantly higher throughout the supplementation period. The results were similar for the 2 methods of calculating energy for maintenance, variable or constant. The feed conversion efficiency, calculated as kg of fat-protein corrected milk per MJ(nel) of eE(intake), was highest in first calving cows compared with cows having more lactations, and correlated with standard milk production at trial group level. It was concluded that eE(intake) was a valid measure of net energy absorption.

Abstract
Effectiveness of low level monensin supplementation on N utilization in lactating dairy cows fed alfalfa silage was assessed using 48 multiparous Holsteins. Cows were fed a covariate diet [% of dry matter (DM): 56% alfalfa silage, 39% ground high moisture corn, 3% soybean meal, 1% ground corn, 1% vitamin-mineral supplements] for 2 wk, then grouped by days in milk into blocks of 4. Cows were randomly assigned within blocks to 1 of 4 diets that were fed for 10 wk: 1) control (covariate diet), 2) control plus 3% fish meal (replacing DM from high moisture corn), 3) monensin (10 mg/kg DM), and 4) monensin plus 3% fish meal. Diets 1 and 3 averaged 16.7% crude protein (25% from free AA in alfalfa silage); diets 2 and 4 averaged 18.5% crude protein. Monensin intake averaged 16 mg/d on diets 1 and 2 (due to contamination) and 248 mg/d on diets 3 and 4. There was no effect of fish meal or monensin on DM intake. However, weight gain and yield of milk, protein, and SNF increased with fish meal feeding, indicating metabolizable protein limited production. Feeding monensin increased blood glucose but reduced yield of 3.5% fat-corrected milk, milk fat content and yield, and milk protein content and yield. Apparent N efficiency was greatest on monensin (diet 3) but lowest on monensin plus fish meal (diet 4). Fish meal reduced blood glucose concentration and apparent N efficiency, and increased concentrations of milk and blood urea. Monensin increased ruminal propionate concentration and decreased concentration of acetate and butyrate and acetate:propionate in ruminally cannulated cows fed the experimental diets. However, these changes were small, suggesting that too little monensin was fed. Fish meal reduced ruminal total amino acid (AA) but monensin did not alter ruminal NH(3) or total AA. Both fish meal and monensin increased NH(3) formation from casein AA using ruminal inoculum from the cannulated cows. There was no evidence from this trial that feeding 250 mg of monensin per day to lactating cows improved N utilization by reducing ruminal catabolism of the large amounts of free AA in alfalfa silage.

Abstract
The dry period has great implications on overall health and productivity in the subsequent lactation. Many anatomic, physiologic, and immunolgic changes are occurring for both the cow and the mammary gland during this time. These changes need to be understood and taken into consideration when assessing and implementing health management programs that involve this crucial time period. Specifically, nutritional and immunologic requirements of the individual cow need to be considered. The occurrence of many peripartum diseases is significantly influenced through nutritional and metabolic parameters that can be strongly influenced, controlled, and monitored in the dry period. From an udder-health perspective, the goal of the dry period can be met by recommending administration of DCT to all quarters of all cows at the end of lactation. As research continues to explore and define shortcomings of this approach and as scrutiny of the prophylactic use of antibiotics increases, however, novel approaches to preventing and eliminating IMI may become more readily available. These approaches offer new methods to improve upon and redefine what should be realistic goals of the dry period and afford an opportunity for continued improvement of udder health in today's dairy herds.

Abstract
A clinical trial was carried out in two provinces of Canada to investigate the effect of treatment with eprinomectin at calving on production parameters in adult dairy cattle in 1999-2000. One of the objectives of this study was to evaluate the impact of treatment on reproductive performance as measured by: calving-to-conception interval, calving-to-first service interval and number of services per conception. The ability of an indirect ELISA using a crude adult Ostertagia ostertagi antigen to predict response to treatment also was evaluated. All lactating cows in 20 dairy herds were allocated randomly to receive either eprinomectin pour-on or placebo at calving. Information on reproductive parameters was obtained from computerised cow records. Survival models were used to evaluate the effect of treatment on the two intervals and a Poisson model was used to evaluate the number of services to conception. A total of 549 cows were included in these analyses. A marginally significant treatment effect on calving-to-conception interval was observed (hazard ratio=1.24, P=0.06) but not on calving-to-first service interval. A significant reduction in the number of breedings to conception for treated animals also was observed with a longer effect in cows with short interval to first service. Milk samples from a subset of 109 late-lactation cows were tested for antibodies against O. ostertagi. The ELISA optical-density ratio (ODR) values obtained between 120 days before calving and drying off were categorised as high ODR (>or=0.5) and low ODR (<0.5). Among untreated animals, the hazard of conception was lower (hazard ratio=0.38, 95% CI=[0.19,0.75]) for high-ODR cows compared to low ODR cows suggesting that higher parasite burdens had an adverse effect on reproductive performance. Treated high-ODR cows had a hazard of conception equivalent to the hazard for all cows in the low-ODR group (indicating that treatment prevented the negative effect associated with these higher parasite burdens).
