Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to observe the influence of differential nutritional status on bone age (BA) change according to body mass index (BMI) and analyze the risk of advanced bone age in children with overweight and obesity. METHODS In total 23,305 children from Beijing were included in this cross-sectional study. Childhood overweight and obesity were defined according to the China and World Health Organization growth criteria. The data were analyzed by the R coding platform version 4.3.0. RESULTS Under the Chinese criteria, 29%, 15%, and 4% of boys with overweight; 33%, 33%, and 3% of boys with obesity; 39%, 25%, and 2% of girls with overweight; and 37%, 42% and 1% of girls with obesity had advanced, significantly advanced and delayed BA, respectively. After adjustment, overweight (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, P under the Chinese criteria: 2.52, 2.30-2.75, <0.001 and 4.54, 4.06-5.09, <0.001) and obesity (4.31, 3.85-4.82, <0.001 and 14.01, 12.39-15.85, <0.001) were risk factors for both advanced BA and significantly advanced BA. CONCLUSIONS Different nutritional statuses lead to differences in children's BA development. Children with overweight and obesity have higher rates of advanced BA under two growth criteria, and girls have more advances in BA than boys do. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for advanced BA.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyse the association between sex hormones and bone age (BA) in boys aged 9-18 years, both individually and interactively, and further to explore whether nutritional status may influence this association. A retrospective analysis was performed among 1382 Chinese boys with physical measurements, sexual characteristics, BA radiographs and sex hormone indicators from February 2015 to February 2022. A total of 470 (34.0%) boys had advanced BA. BA was positively associated with estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone in both advanced and normal BA groups after adjusting for age, genetic height and body mass index. Multiple logistic regression showed that after adjusting for covariates, estradiol (odds ratio [OR] = 1.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-2.12), LH (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.04-1.96), and testosterone (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.17-2.13) were significantly associated with the increased risk of advanced BA in boys, and the association was reinforced when these hormones were interactively explored. Stratified by nutritional status, the interaction between estradiol, LH, and testosterone showed a strong association with advanced BA in boys with normal weight.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, a trend of increasing obesity among children has emerged. This study aimed to evaluate and summarize the impacts of overweight and obesity on children's and adolescents' skeletal and dental developmental advancement that may influence orthodontic management. METHODS Registered with the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (registration no. CRD42022347488), this study complies with the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. Particularly, relevant original studies on skeletal or dental age evaluation were screened from accessible electronic databases and supplemented by hand-searching. Meta-analysis was recruited to calculate differences (and their 95% confidence interval [CI]) between subjects with overweight or obese and normal-weight counterparts. RESULTS After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 articles were selected for the final review. Two of the 17 selected studies were found to have a high risk of bias and moderate the other 15. A meta-analysis detected no statistically significant difference in skeletal age between children and adolescents with overweight and normal-weight counterparts (P = 0.24). However, the dental age of children and adolescents with overweight was found to be 0.49 years (95% CI, 0.29-0.70) advanced in comparison with normal-weight counterparts (P <0.00001). In contrast, children and adolescents with obesity were found to have advanced skeletal age by 1.17 (95% CI, 0.48-1.86) years (P = 0.0009) and dental age by 0.56 (95% CI, 0.37-0.76) years (P <0.00001) compared with their normal-weight counterparts. CONCLUSION Because the orthopedic outcomes of the orthodontic intervention are closely tied to the skeletal age of the patients, these results suggest that the orthodontic evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with obesity might occur earlier than that of the normal-weight population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Premature adrenarche (PA) for long time was considered a benign condition but later has been connected to various diseases in childhood and adulthood which remains controversial. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of premature adrenarche on the metabolic phenotype, and correlate the clinical and biochemical data with the metabolic profile of children with PA. METHODS Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based untargeted and targeted metabolomic approach in combination with multivariate and univariate statistical analysis applied to study the metabolic profiles of children with PA. Plasma, serum, and urine samples were collected from fifty-two children with Idiopathic PA and forty-eight age-matched controls from the division of Pediatric Endocrinology of the University Hospital of Patras were enrolled. RESULTS Metabolomic results showed that plasma and serum glucose, myo-inositol, amino acids, a population of unsaturated lipids, and esterified cholesterol were higher and significantly different in PA children. In the metabolic profiles of children with PA and age-matched control group a gradual increase of glucose and myo-inositol levels was observed in serum and plasma, which was positively correlated their body mass index standard deviation score (BMI SDS) values respectively. Urine 1H NMR metabolic fingerprint of PA children showed positive correlation and a clustering-dependent relationship with their BMI and bone age (BA) respectively. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence that PA driven metabolic changes begin during the childhood and PA may has an inductive role in a BMI-driven increase of specific metabolites. Finally, urine may be considered as the best biofluid for identification of the PA metabolism as it reflects more clearly the PA metabolic fingerprint.

Abstract
Purpose To observe the correlation between nutritional status, bone age, and sexual development in children and adolescents. Methods 895 children and adolescents who underwent physical examination in the growth and development clinic and height clinic of our hospital from 2019 to 2021 were selected as the research objects. The subjects were divided into emaciation group, normal group, overweight group, and obesity group. The bone age level, bone age assessment, sexual development, and early maturity rate of each group were compared. Results The bone age difference (BAD) of the overweight and obesity groups was higher than that of the normal group, and the BAD of the obesity group was higher than that of the emaciation group (P < 0.05). Compared with the normal group, the risk of advancement of bone age in the overweight group increased by 2.674 times (male) and 1.908 times (female), the risk of advancement of bone age in the obesity group increased by 6.376 times (male) and 14.687 times (female), the risk of retardation of bone age in the emaciation group increased by 2.150 times (male) and 3.092 times (female). Whether it was male or female, the sexual development of overweight and obese was higher than that of the normal weight group in the same age group. Among female children, the sexual precocious puberty rate of the overweight + obesity group is higher. Conclusion The nutritional status of children and adolescents is closely related to their bone age and sexual development.

Abstract
With the declining age at onset of puberty and increasing prevalence of childhood obesity, early breast development in young obese girls has become a more frequent occurrence. Here, we examine available literature to answer a series of questions regarding how obesity impacts the evaluation and management of precocious puberty. We focus on girls as the literature is more robust, but include boys where literature permits. Suggestions include: (1) Age cutoffs for evaluation of precocious puberty should not differ substantially from those used for nonobese children. Obese girls with confirmed thelarche should be evaluated for gonadotropin-dependent, central precocious puberty (CPP) to determine if further investigation or treatment is warranted. (2) Basal luteinizing hormone (LH) levels remain a recommended first-line test. However, if stimulation testing is utilized, there is a theoretical possibility that the lower peak LH responses seen in obesity could lead to a false negative result. (3) Advanced bone age (BA) is common among obese girls even without early puberty; hence its diagnostic utility is limited. (4) Obesity does not eliminate the need for magnetic resonance imaging in girls with true CPP. Age and clinical features should determine who warrants neuroimaging. (5) BA can be used to predict adult height in obese girls with CPP to inform counseling around treatment. (6) Use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) leads to increased adult height in obese girls. (7) Obesity should not limit GnRHa use as these agents do not worsen weight status in obese girls with CPP.

Abstract
Androstenedione is a steroidal hormone produced in male and female gonads, as well as in the adrenal glands, and it is known for its key role in the production of estrogen and testosterone. Androstenedione is also sold as an oral supplement, that is being utilized to increase testosterone levels. Simply known as "andro" by athletes, it is commonly touted as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids. By boosting testosterone levels, it is thought to be an enhancer for athletic performance, build body muscles, reduce fats, increase energy, maintain healthy RBCs, and increase sexual performance. Nevertheless, several of these effects are not yet scientifically proven. Though commonly used as a supplement for body building, it is listed among performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, as well as the International Olympic Committee. This review focuses on the action mechanism behind androstenedione's health effects, and further side effects including clinical features, populations at risk, pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and toxicokinetics. A review of androstenedione regulation in drug doping is also presented.

Abstract
This retrospective study aimed to clarify the characteristics of bone maturation using
longitudinal data in short-stature prepubertal children. Children with chronological ages
(CAs) of 4.5–10.5 yr with nonfamilial idiopathic short stature (ISS, n = 95), familial ISS
(FSS, n = 21), and short-stature children born small for gestational age (SGA, n = 23)
were selected, of which 435 left-hand plain radiographic images were evaluated. Bone age
(BA) delay was defined as BA minus CA. In the ISS group, there was a statistically
significant difference in median BA delay among the CA groups (P < 0.001), as median BA
delay gradually increased from 5- to 9-yr-old groups (−1.06 [range, −2.17 to 0.27] and
−2.45 [range, −4.35 to −0.32] yr, respectively). In the FSS group, median BA delays were
approximately −1 yr in all CA groups. In the SGA group, median BA delay gradually
decreased from 7- to 10-yr-old groups (−1.96 [range, −2.99 to 0.56] and −0.04 [range,
−2.44 to 0.92] yr, respectively), but with no significant difference (P = 0.647). The
heavier weight of children with FSS and the probable earlier onset of adrenarche in
children born SGA compared to those with ISS could have affected bone maturation.

Quadriceps Strength Is Influenced by Skeletal Maturity in Adolescents Recovering From Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction. J Pediatr Orthop 2021; 41:e141-e146. Abstract
BACKGROUND Anterior cruciate ligament injuries and anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions (ACLRs) are common, especially in adolescent patients. Recovery of strength, jumping performance, and perceived/subjective function are often used to make a return to sports decisions after injury. It is unknown how skeletal maturity may influence strength recovery after ACLR. The purpose of this study was to compare the strength and patient-reported outcomes in adolescent ACLR patients with and without open distal femur and proximal tibia physes. METHODS One hundred seventeen consecutive patients under the age of 18 were referred for routine strength and subjective outcomes evaluation following ACLR, 100 were included in the final analyses after excluding those with prior injuries, those tested outside for 4 to 12 month postoperative window, and those with incomplete clinical data. All study patients completed patient-reported outcomes, and underwent isometric and isokinetic testing of knee extensor and flexor strength to calculate normalized peak torque and limb symmetry. Statistical analyses were performed on all outcomes data using a 2×2 (physeal status: open, closed; and sex: male, female) with analysis of covariance where age and preoperative activity level were used as covariates. RESULTS A significant interaction between sex and physeal status for isokinetic knee extension peak torque and isometric knee extension peak torque, and limb symmetry index was found. This indicated that males with open physes were stronger and more symmetric than males with closed physes and females with open physes at ~6 months post-ACLR. There were no differences between sexes for patients with closed physes. No interactions were observed for flexion strength. Male patients and patients with open physes had higher perceived knee function compared with their corresponding counterparts. CONCLUSIONS After ACLR, adolescent patients with open physes had higher quadriceps strength compared with patients with closed physes. Overall, those skeletally less mature patients actually fared better on the functional strength tests, suggesting that functional recovery is not hindered by the presence of an incompletely closed physis. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Adrenarche is the pubertal maturation of the innermost zone of the adrenal cortex, the zona reticularis. The onset of adrenarche occurs between 6 and 8 years of age when dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) concentrations increase. This review provides an update on adrenal steroidogenesis and the differential diagnosis of premature development of pubic hair. RECENT FINDINGS The complexity of adrenal steroidogenesis has increased with recognition of the alternative 'backdoor pathway' and the 11-oxo-androgens pathways. Traditionally, sulfated steroids such as DHEAS have been considered to be inactive metabolites. Recent data suggest that intracellular sulfated steroids may function as tissue-specific intracrine hormones particularly in the tissues expressing steroid sulfatases such as ovaries, testes, and placenta. SUMMARY The physiologic mechanisms governing the onset of adrenarche remain unclear. To date, no validated regulatory feedback mechanism has been identified for adrenal C19 steroid secretion. Available data indicate that for most children, premature adrenarche is a benign variation of development and a diagnosis of exclusion. Patients with premature adrenarche tend to have higher BMI values. Yet, despite greater knowledge about C19 steroids and zona reticularis function, much remains to be learned about adrenarche.

Abstract
Background In isolated premature thelarche (IPT) girls, bone age (BA) is considered consistent with chronological age. However, some IPT girls confirmed by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test could show another trend. We analysed BA and possible potentiating factors in a selected group of girls aged 4–8 years with IPT. Methods IPT girls confirmed by GnRH stimulation test aged 4–8 years hospitalized from January 2015 to April 2018 at Shenzhen Children’s Hospital were included in this retrospective study. They were divided into two groups with advanced BA of 2 years as the cut-off. Body mass index (BMI) and hormone levels were the main outcome measures, and regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors. IPT girls were divided into subgroups according to the levels of BMI standard deviation score (SDS), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) SDS and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) SDS for comparisons of advanced BA. Results Overall, 423 subjects were included and classified into the advanced BA group (48.7%, n = 206) and control group (51.3%, n = 217). The advanced BA group had significantly higher BMI SDS, serum DHEAS SDS, IGF-1 SDS, androstenedione and fasting insulin and significantly lower sex hormone binding globulin (all p < 0.001). Serum IGF-1 SDS (OR = 1.926, p<0.001), BMI SDS (OR = 1.427, p = 0.001) and DHEAS SDS (OR = 1.131, p = 0.005) were independent risk factors for significantly advanced BA. In the multiple linear regression model, serum IGF-1 SDS, BMI SDS and DHEAS SDS were the strongest predictors of advanced BA, accounting for 19.3% of the variance. According to BMI, 423 patients were classified into three groups: normal weight (56.03%, n = 237), overweight (19.15%, n = 81) and obesity (24.82%, n = 105). The proportion of advanced BA in obesity group was significantly higher than those of normal weight and overweight groups (χ2 = 18.088, p<0.001). In the subgroup with normal weight, higher serum IGF-1 SDS (p = 0.009) and DHEAS SDS (p = 0.003) affected BA advancement independent of BMI SDS. Conclusions Girls with IPT confirmed by GnRH stimulation test aged 4–8 years might have significantly advanced BA. Obesity was highly associated with advanced BA. Age-specific serum IGF-1 SDS and DHEAS SDS were risk factors for BA advancement independent of BMI.

Abstract
Anthropogenic habitat change can have varied impacts on primates, including both negative and positive outcomes. Even when behavioural shifts are seen, they may reflect decreased health, or simply behavioural flexibility; understanding this distinction is important for conservation efforts. This study examines habitat-related variation in adult and immature morphometrics among diademed sifakas (Propithecus diadema). We collected morphometric data from sifakas at Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar (19 years, 188 captures, 113 individuals). Captures spanned 12 groups, five within continuous forest ("CONT"), and seven in degraded fragments ("FRAG") where sifakas have lower nutritional intakes. Few consistent differences were found between CONT and FRAG groups. However, using home range quality as a covariate rather than a CONT/FRAG dichotomy revealed a threshold: the two FRAG groups in the lowest-quality habitat showed low adult mass and condition (wasting), and low immature mass and length (stunting). Though less-disturbed fragments apparently provide viable habitat, we suggest the sifakas in the most challenging habitats cannot evolve fast enough to keep up with such rapid habitat change. We suggest other long-lived organisms will show similar morphometric "warning signs" (wasting in adults, stunting in immatures); selected morphometric variables can thus be useful at gauging vulnerability of populations in the face of anthropogenic change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Information on the efficacy of GH treatment in short SGA children starting their treatment in adolescence is limited. Therefore, adult height (AH), total height gain, and pubertal height gain were evaluated in short SGA children who started GH treatment at pubertal onset. PATIENT AND METHODS Growth data of 47 short SGA adolescents (22 boys) who started GH treatment at pubertal onset (PUB group) were compared with results from 27 short SGA patients (11 boys) who started GH therapy at least 1 year before pubertal onset (PrePUB group). RESULTS The PUB group achieved a mean (±SD) total height gain of 0.8 ± 0.7 SDS and an AH of -2.5 ± 0.7 SDS after 4.1 ± 1.1 years of GH treatment with a dosage of 41.8 ± 8.4 μg/kg/day. These results were comparable with those in the PrePUB group, which was treated for a longer duration (5.8 ± 2.1 years), resulting in a total height gain of 1.1 ± 0.7 SDS and an AH of -2.1 ± 1.0 SDS. Multiple regression analysis showed a significantly lower height gain in pubertal patients, females, and patients weighing less at start of GH treatment. An AH above -2 SDS and above the parent-specific lower limit of height was, respectively, reached in 28% and 70% of PUB and 44% and 67% of PrePUB patients (NS). AH SDS was positively correlated with the height SDS at start of GH. CONCLUSIONS Short SGA adolescents starting GH therapy at an early pubertal stage have a modest and variable height gain. A normal AH can be expected in one third of the patients, especially in those with a smaller height deficit at onset of GH treatment.

Abstract
Childhood obesity is a major public health concern throughout the world. Nutrition, energy balance and hormones interplay in growth and pubertal development regulation. Frequently overweight and obese children are taller for their age and sex and tend to mature earlier than lean children. The increased leptin and sex hormone levels seen in obese children with excessive adiposity may be implicated in accelerated pubertal growth and accelerated epiphyseal growth plate maturation. Efforts to detect the impact of obesity in children are needed to prevent metabolic and cardiovascular disease in later life. This review aims to cover the process of growth in obese children and implications of body composition on growth and pubertal development and introduce the use of body composition charts in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) require life-long glucocorticoid replacement and have daily intermittent hyper/hypocortisolemia and hyperandrogenemia. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is important for understanding the impact the disease and therapy have on physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning. Little is known about HRQL in CAH. We compared HRQL in children with CAH to healthy norms and examined how these scores related to physiologic variables. Methods A cross-sectional study examined 45 patients (mean age 8.2(4.5) years). Thirty-two self-reported their quality of life (QoL) on the PedsQL™ Generic Core Scale and PedsQL™ Fatigue Scale, and 44 parents completed a parent report. Bone age Z-scores were calculated from the most recent bone age. Results Children with CAH did not report lower QoL than healthy norms. However, their parents reported lower overall QoL and fatigue scores than parents of healthy norms. Children with CAH rated sleep poorer than their parents. QoL scores did not differ by sex or CAH subtype and were not associated with total daily hydrocortisone dose. Bone age Z-scores were negatively associated with child-reported emotional health and cognitive fatigue. Conclusions Parents of children with CAH reported a negative impact of disease on their children’s QoL, but their children did not. The negative associations between bone age Z-scores and emotional health and cognitive fatigue suggest an impact from chronic hypocortisolemia and hyperandrogenemia.

Abstract
Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) involves the occurrence of a thin or absent pituitary stalk, hypoplasia of the adenohypophysis, and ectopic neurohypophysis. Diagnosis is confirmed using magnetic resonance imaging. Patients with PSIS have a variable degree of pituitary hormone deficiency and a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. The clinical course of the disease in our patient is similar to that of a syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. This is thought to be caused by failure in the suppression of vasopressin secretion due to hypocortisolism. To the best of our knowledge, there is no case report of a patient with PSIS presenting with hyponatremia as the first symptom in Korean children. Herein, we report a patient with PSIS presenting severe recurrent hyponatremia as the first symptom, during adolescence and explain the pathophysiology of hyponatremia with secondary adrenal insufficiency.
