Abstract
The human gut microbiome, comprised of trillions of microorganisms, plays a pivotal role in both physical and mental health. Recent research underscores the intriguing connection between gut bacteria and mental well-being, leading to the emergence of psychobiotics-microbes with mental health benefits. This review aims to explore fermented vegetables, a traditional dietary staple experiencing renewed interest, as a potential source of psychobiotics. Fermentation alters the microbial composition of vegetables, enriching them with beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Various fermented vegetables, including kimchi, sauerkraut, and tempeh, host distinct bacterial communities. The review investigates how these psychobiotics may impact mental health through the gut-brain axis, a communication network between the gut and the central nervous system. Possible mechanisms encompass neurotransmitter modulation (e.g., serotonin, GABA), inflammation reduction and immunity modulation, and stress response enhancement through the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. Clinical studies exploring the influence of fermented vegetables on mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive function, are critically evaluated. The review assesses the efficacy of different fermented vegetables and probiotic strains while recognizing limitations in existing research and the necessity for further investigation.

Abstract
Fertility is a dynamic, multifactorial process governed by hormonal, immune, metabolic, and environmental factors. Recent evidence highlights the gut microbiota as a key systemic regulator of reproductive health, with notable impacts on endometrial function, implantation, pregnancy maintenance, and the timing of birth. This review examines the gut-endometrial axis, focusing on how gut microbial communities influence reproductive biology through molecular signaling pathways. We discuss the modulatory roles of microbial-derived metabolites-including short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and tryptophan catabolites-in shaping immune tolerance, estrogen metabolism, and epithelial integrity at the uterine interface. Emphasis is placed on shared mechanisms such as β-glucuronidase-mediated estrogen recycling, Toll-like receptor (TLR)-driven inflammation, Th17/Treg cell imbalance, and microbial translocation, which collectively implicate dysbiosis in the etiology of gynecological disorders including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), recurrent implantation failure (RIF), preeclampsia (PE), and preterm birth (PTB). Although most current evidence remains correlational, emerging insights from metagenomic and metabolomic profiling, along with microbiota-depletion models and Mendelian randomization studies, underscore the biological significance of gut-reproductive crosstalk. By integrating concepts from microbiology, immunology, and reproductive molecular biology, this review offers a systems-level perspective on host-microbiota interactions in female fertility.

Abstract
Background: Traditional fermented soybean foods, acting as potential synbiotics, may help mitigate cognitive impairment associated with amnesia. This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of four kanjang (Korean fermented soy sauce) varieties and their underlying mechanisms. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 70) were divided into seven groups: normal control, scopolamine control, positive control (1 mg/kg bw/day of donepezil), and four scopolamine-treated groups receiving different kanjang varieties (0.5% in high-fat diet). Based on their Bacillus content, the kanjang samples were categorized as traditionally made kanjang (TMK) with high Bacillus (SS-HB), TMK with medium Bacillus (SS-MB), TMK with low Bacillus (SS-LB), and factory-made kanjang (SS-FM). Results: Scopolamine administration disrupted energy, glucose, and water metabolism and impaired memory function (p < 0.05). All kanjang treatments improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, enhanced glucose tolerance, and decreased visceral fat. SS-MB, SS-HB, and SS-FM increased skeletal muscle mass. They maintained body water homeostasis by suppressing the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Kanjang treatments improved memory function, with SS-FM showing the least significant effects. The treatments reduced neuronal cell death in the hippocampal CA1 region, decreased acetylcholinesterase activity, and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor mRNA expression. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that kanjang treatments increased Lactobacillaceae and decreased Lachnospiraceae, with SS-HB and SS-LB specifically elevating Ligilactobacillus. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated enhanced glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathways and enhanced butanoate metabolism while reducing lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis and pro-inflammatory signaling. SS-MB and SS-LB increased intestinal goblet cell counts and the serum butyrate concentration. Conclusions: These findings suggest that kanjang consumption, particularly SS-HB and SS-LB varieties, can ameliorate memory impairment in this murine model through multiple mechanisms: metabolic improvements, enhanced neurotrophic signaling, gut microbiota modulation, and reduced neuroinflammation via gut-brain axis activation. Human clinical trials are warranted to determine if these promising neuroprotective effects translate to clinical applications.

Abstract
European cereal-based fermented foods (ECBFFs) and alcoholic beverages have been fundamental components of regional diets for centuries, providing unique flavor profiles, essential nutrients, and a diverse array of health benefits. These foods, which encompass breads, beverages, and porridges, derive their functional and culinary properties from the activity of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. This review examines the nutritional and functional characteristics of ECBFFs, with a focus on their microbial composition and fermentation processes. It highlights various ECBFFs and alcoholic beverages, including conventional and sourdough breads, tarhana, boza, kvass, and beers examining their health-promoting properties and potential for commercial expansion. Key findings from the literature show that certain ECBFFs are abundant in prebiotics and probiotics, primarily due to the fermentation processes involving lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. These microorganisms generate bioactive compounds such as organic acids, bacteriocins, and phenolic compounds, which exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. ECBFFs can also enhance digestibility, improve mineral bioavailability, and support gut health, thereby promoting overall well-being. From a commercial perspective, products like Yosa and Proviva demonstrate the feasibility of developing innovative ECBFFs that align with contemporary dietary preferences. The future of ECBFFs is promising, offering extensive opportunities for research, innovation, and large-scale commercialization to meet the increasing consumer demand for functional, plant-based foods.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of dietary fibre on the mental health and cognitive function of children and adolescents. Methods: All interventional and observational studies that contained information on the relevant population (children and adolescents), intervention/exposures (high dietary fibre consumption) and outcomes (mental and cognitive parameters) were eligible. Eight electronic databases (Embase, Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov) were searched up to December 11, 2023. Results: A total of 15 studies (n = 4628) met inclusion criteria, consisting of 9 intervention trials and 6 observational studies. According to observational studies, higher dietary fibre consumption was associated with a 49% reduction in the odds of depression compared to lower intake (P < 0.0001; OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.69; I2 = 0%). Furthermore, no significant correlations were found between dietary fibre consumption and intelligence or anxiety. Among intervention studies, no significant difference was observed between fibre supplementation and placebo in terms of anxiety (standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.23; 95% CI: -0.72, 0.27), stress (SMD: 0.03; 95% CI: -0.21, 0.28), memory (SMD: 0.46; 95% CI: -0.79, 1.71), or attention (SMD: -2.72; 95% CI: -6.30, 0.86). Conclusion: Evidence from observation studies demonstrated that higher dietary fibre consumption is associated with a decreased odds of depression symptoms, both in childhood and adolescence. However, the causal relationship between dietary fibre intake and mental and cognitive function in children and adolescents still requires further clarification through high-quality intervention studies in the future.

Abstract
Objectives Over the past decade, research has reported that diet and gut health affect anxiety symptoms through changes in the gut microbiota. Therefore, the introduction of prebiotic and probiotic food favorable for the intestinal microbiota is necessary to improve the mental health of the host. The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of prebiotic and probiotic foods to lowering anxiety symptoms using a large, nationwide population-based database. Materials and methods The study population included 4,317 individuals 19 to 64 years of age who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII-3, 2019-2021). A food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate prebiotic and probiotic food consumption. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment 7-item scale (GAD-7) assessed the severity of anxiety symptoms. The effect of prebiotic and probiotic food consumption on anxiety severity was analyzed using multiple logistic regression. Results Anxiety symptom severity was significantly lower in the highest prebiotic and/or probiotic food consumption tertiles compared to the lowest food consumption tertile. We also found a sex difference in the odds ratio for anxiety symptoms. The consumption of prebiotic food was significantly associated with the highest odds of anxiety among both men and women. However, probiotic food had a significant beneficial effect on lowering anxiety symptoms in men but not in women. Conclusion Our finding suggests that prebiotic and probiotic food consumption might confer a beneficial influence on anxiety symptoms. Further research is required for a deeper understanding into the mechanisms of the positive effects of prebiotics and probiotics on anxiety.

Abstract
The effects of the gut microbiota on mental and intestinal health are an area of great interest. This study aimed to reveal the relationship between the intake of probiotic and prebiotic foods and mental and gut health. Data were obtained using an online survey from young adults (n = 538) enrolled at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University who agreed to participate in this study in the 2022-2023 academic year. This study included 538 participants, mostly (85.5%) females. Participants who never consumed yogurt had 7.614 times higher Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale scores than those who consumed yogurt daily (p < 0.01). Similarly, the frequency of ayran consumption had a statistically significant effect on Bristol Stool Scale scores (p < 0.05). The ratio of normal defecation to constipation was 68.7% lower in participants who consumed ayran daily, whereas the ratio of diarrhea to constipation was 76.4% lower in participants who never consumed ayran. However, the frequency of prebiotic consumption did not have a significant effect on Bristol Stool Scale scores (p > 0.05). The consumption of probiotic and prebiotic foods exerted a significant effect on GSRS total scores and subfactors of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42, namely depression, anxiety, and stress.

Abstract
Background It is believed that personality traits have an impact on the propensity to change and maintain favorable lifestyle habits. This issue has been raised by multiple studies, however, none of them appeared to focus on population under severe psychological stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the link between personality traits and health-related behaviors and measures such as dietary intake of specific food products, physical activity, body-mass index and the use of cigarettes in medical students facing a stressful event. Methods The study included a cohort of third-year medical students from the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, facing a stressful subject exam during the first COVID-19-related lockdown. At baseline, personality traits were evaluated with the use of the Polish version of the Big Five Inventory-Short questionnaire. Then, consumption of selected food products was monitored with the use of seven-day electronic dietary record. Also, some other health-related data was collected (body-mass index, physical activity and the use of cigarettes). General Linear Modeling techniques, logistic regression and exploratory factor analysis were applied to analyze the data. Results Four hundred and forty-four students completed the study. A two-factor pattern of food consumption was discovered by the exploratory factor analysis in the study group (34% of the variance explained). Higher conscientiousness, but not the other personality traits, was found to be significantly associated with generally healthier lifestyle manifested by higher consumption of vegetables, wholegrain products, fruits and nuts (adjusted beta 0.16, 95%CI 0.06 to 0.26, pη2 = 2.3%, p = 0.0015) and lower cigarette smoking (adjusted odds ratio 0.84, 95%CI 0.75 to 0.94, p = 0.0020), but insignificantly with physical activity and body-mass index. Conclusion Severely stressed medical students expressing high conscientiousness tend to present healthier behaviors. Therefore, interventions aimed at improving lifestyle habits in students with low conscientiousness might be useful.

Abstract
Pro-and prebiotics have been indicated to modulate the gut-brain axis, which have supportive impacts on central nervous systems, and decrease or control the incidence of some mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, autism, Schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's. In this review, complex communications among microbiota, gut, and the brain, and also recent scientific findings of the impacts and possible action mechanisms of pro-and prebiotics on mental disorders have been discussed. The results have shown that pro-and prebiotics can improve the function of central nervous system and play an important role in the prevention and treatment of some brain disorders; however, in order to prove these effects conclusively and firmly and to use these compounds in a therapeutic and supportive way, more studies are needed, especially human studies/clinical trials.

Abstract
Depression is the most prevalent mental disorder in the world associated with huge socio-economic consequences. While depressive-related symptoms are well known, the molecular mechanisms underlying disease pathophysiology and progression remain largely unknown. The gut microbiota (GM) is emerging as a key regulator of the central nervous system homeostasis by exerting fundamental immune and metabolic functions. In turn, the brain influences the intestinal microbial composition through neuroendocrine signals, within the so-called gut microbiota-brain axis. The balance of this bidirectional crosstalk is important to ensure neurogenesis, preserve the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and avoid neuroinflammation. Conversely, dysbiosis and gut permeability negatively affect brain development, behavior, and cognition. Furthermore, although not fully defined yet, changes in the GM composition in depressed patients are reported to influence the pharmacokinetics of common antidepressants by affecting their absorption, metabolism, and activity. Similarly, neuropsychiatric drugs may shape in turn the GM with an impact on the efficacy and toxicity of the pharmacological intervention itself. Consequently, strategies aimed at re-establishing the correct homeostatic gut balance (i.e., prebiotics, probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and dietary interventions) represent an innovative approach to improve the pharmacotherapy of depression. Among these, probiotics and the Mediterranean diet, alone or in combination with the standard of care, hold promise for clinical application. Therefore, the disclosure of the intricate network between GM and depression will give precious insights for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches towards depression, with profound implications for drug development and clinical practice.

Abstract
The relationship between gut microbiota (GM) and mental health is one of the focuses of psychobiology research. In recent years, the microbial-gut-brain axis (MGBA) concept has gradually formed about this bidirectional communication between gut and brain. But how the GM is involved in regulating brain function and how they affect emotional disorders these mechanisms are tenuous and limited to animal research, and often controversial. Therefore, in this review, we attempt to summarize and categorize the latest advances in current research on the mechanisms of GM and depression to provide valid information for future diagnoses and therapy of mental disorders. Finally, we introduced some antidepressant regimens that can help restore gut dysbiosis, including classic antidepressants, Chinese materia medica (CMM), diet, and exogenous strains. These studies provide further insight into GM's role and potential pathways in emotion-related diseases, which holds essential possible clinical outcomes for people with depression or related psychiatric disorders. Future research should focus on clarifying the causal role of GM in disease and developing microbial targets, applying these findings to the prevention and treatment of depression.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diet is an essential modulator of the microbiota - gut - brain communication in health and disease. Consequently, diet-induced microbiome states can impact brain health and behaviour. The integration of microbiome into clinical nutrition perspectives of brain health is sparse. This review will thus focus on emerging evidence of microbiome-targeted dietary approaches with the potential to improve brain disorders. RECENT FINDINGS Research in this field is evolving toward randomized controlled trials using dietary interventions with the potential to modulate pathways of the microbiota - gut - brain-axis. Although most studies included small cohorts, the beneficial effects of Mediterranean-like diets on symptoms of depression or fermented foods on the immune function of healthy individuals shed light on how this research line can grow. With a clinical nutrition lens, we highlight several methodological limitations and knowledge gaps, including the quality of dietary intake information, the design of dietary interventions, and missing behavioural outcomes. SUMMARY Findings in diet - microbiome - brain studies can have groundbreaking implications in clinical nutrition practice and research. Modulating brain processes through diet via the gut microbiota raises numerous possibilities. Novel dietary interventions targeting the microbiota - gut - brain-axis can offer various options to prevent and treat health problems such as mental disorders. Furthermore, knowledge in this field will improve current nutritional guidelines for disease prevention.

Abstract
Probiotic therapies and fermented food diets hold promise for improving mental health. Although in this regard psychiatric patients appear to benefit more than healthy individuals, no research has been performed to directly evaluate this hypothesis. The present study examined a cohort of medical students facing a stressful event, and some of the students reported suffering from chronic psychiatric diseases. The amount of fermented food consumption was calculated with the use of seven-day dietary records, while depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed with the use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, respectively. In psychiatrically healthy medical students under psychological stress (n = 372), higher fermented food consumption was associated with more depressive and anxiety symptoms. In contrast, psychiatrically ill medical students (n = 25, 6.3% of all the participants) were found to present a negative association between the amount of fermented food consumed and the severity of depressive symptoms (adjusted β -0.52, 95% CI -0.85 to -0.19, p = 0.0042); however, this relationship was insignificant for anxiety symptoms (adjusted β -0.22, 95% CI -0.59 to 0.15, p = 0.22). A significant interaction was found between the consumption of fermented food and psychiatric diagnosis in predicting depressive symptoms (p = 0.0001), and a borderline significant interaction for anxiety symptoms (p = 0.053). In conclusion, psychiatrically ill people, but not healthy ones, may benefit from fermented food consumption in terms of alleviation of depressive symptoms. Our findings require cautious interpretation and further investigation.

Abstract
Depression is the major cause of disability globally. Apart from lowered mood and accompanying symptoms, it leads to cognitive impairment that altogether predicts disadvantaged social functioning. Reduced cognitive function in depression appears a bit neglected in the field of clinical and molecular psychiatry, while it is estimated to occur in two-thirds of depressed patients and persist in at least one third of remitted patients. This problem, therefore, requires elucidation at the biomolecular and system levels and calls for improvement in therapeutic approach. In this review study, we address the above-mentioned issues by discussing putative mechanisms of cognitive decline in depression: (1) increased oxidative stress and (2) inflammation, (3) disturbed hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenals axis, and (4) reduced monoamines functionality. Moreover, we acknowledge additional underpinnings of cognitive impairment in depressed elderly: (5) vascular-originated brain ischemia and (6) amyloid-beta plaque accumulation. Additionally, by reviewing molecular, pre-clinical and clinical evidence, we propose gut microbiota-targeted strategies as potential adjuvant therapeutics. The study provides a consolidated source of knowledge regarding mechanisms of cognitive impairment in depression and may path the way toward improved treatment options.
