N2O emission factors for organic amendments in Japan from measurement campaign and systematic review

Organic amendments are important sources of nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agricultural soils. In 2020, the total amount of N in organic amendments applied to Japanese agricultural soils (440 ktN) was larger than that of synthetic fertilizer (374 ktN). However, N₂O emissions from organic amendments were estimated by using the country-specific N₂O emission factor (EF) for synthetic fertilizer (0.31 % for rice paddy, 2.9 % for tea, and 0.62 % for other crops) in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report of Japan. Thus, we conducted a N₂O flux measurement campaign at 12 different experimental sites across Japan to estimate fertilizer-induced N₂O EFs for major organic amendments in Japan, that is, poultry manure compost, swine manure compost, cattle manure compost, and organic fertilizer pellets. In addition, we conducted systematic review of N₂O emissions and EFs for organic amendments, including data from our measurement campaign and published data from peer-reviewed papers in Japan. The final dataset, including the field measurement campaign and published data, resulted in 404 observations (including synthetic fertilizer and zero-N control) in 29 sites. Results showed that soil type affected EFs, that is, the mean EF of Andosols was lower than that of non-Andosols, which is similar to the case of EFs for synthetic fertilizer. Mean EFs for poultry manure compost, swine manure compost, cattle manure (compost and slurry), and non-animal manure organic fertilizers were 0.83 % (uncertainty range of 2.5th and 97.5th percentile: 0.09 % to 3.46 %), 0.70 % (0.02 % to 2.45 %), 0.39 % (0.00 % to 1.62 %), and 1.16 % (0.41 % to 3.03 %), respectively, when weighted by area of soil types. The mean EF of all organic amendments was 0.84 % (0.00 % to 2.91 %), when the area of soil type and amount of organic amendment used in Japan were considered. Our study provides country-specific EFs to estimate N₂O emission from organic amendments in Japan.

Sphingomonas sediminicola Is an Endosymbiotic Bacterium Able to Induce the Formation of Root Nodules in Pea (Pisum sativum L.) and to Enhance Plant Biomass Production

The application of bacterial bio-inputs is a very attractive alternative to the use of mineral fertilisers. In ploughed soils including a crop rotation pea, we observed an enrichment of bacterial communities with Sphingomonas (S.) sediminicola. Inoculation experiments, cytological studies, and de novo sequencing were used to investigate the beneficial role of S. sediminicola in pea. S. sediminicola is able to colonise pea plants and establish a symbiotic association that promotes plant biomass production. Sequencing of the S. sediminicola genome revealed the existence of genes involved in secretion systems, Nod factor synthesis, and nitrogenase activity. Light and electron microscopic observations allowed us to refine the different steps involved in the establishment of the symbiotic association, including the formation of infection threads, the entry of the bacteria into the root cells, and the development of differentiated bacteroids in root nodules. These results, together with phylogenetic analysis, demonstrated that S. sediminicola is a non-rhizobia that has the potential to develop a beneficial symbiotic association with a legume. Such a symbiotic association could be a promising alternative for the development of more sustainable agricultural practices, especially under reduced N fertilisation conditions.

Simulating grazing beef and sheep systems

CONTEXT

Ruminant livestock make an important contribution to global food security by converting feed that is unsuitable for human consumption into high value food protein, demand for which is currently increasing at an unprecedented rate because of increasing global population and income levels. Factors affecting production efficiency, product quality, and consumer acceptability, such as animal fertility, health and welfare, will ultimately define the sustainability of ruminant production systems. These more complex systems can be developed and analysed by using models that can predict system responses to environment and management.

OBJECTIVE

We present a framework that dynamically models, using a process-based and mechanistic approach, animal and grass growth, nutrient cycling and water redistribution in a soil profile taking into account the effects of animal genotype, climate, feed quality and quantity on livestock production, greenhouse gas emissions, water use and quality, and nutrient cycling in a grazing system.

METHODS

A component to estimate ruminant animal growth was developed and integrated with the existing components of the SPACSYS model. Intake of herbage and/or concentrates and partitioning of the energy and protein contained in consumed herbage and/or concentrates were simulated in the component. Simulated animal growth was validated using liveweight data from over 200 finishing beef cattle and 900 lambs collected from the North Wyke Farm Platform (NWFP) in southwest England, UK, between 2011 and 2018. Annual nitrous oxide (N₂O), ammonia, methane and carbon dioxide emissions from individual fields were simulated based on previous validated parameters.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

A series of statistical indicators demonstrated that the model could simulate liveweight gain of beef cattle and lamb. Simulated nitrogen (N) cycling estimated N input of 190 to 260 kg ha^-1, of which 37-61% was removed from the fields either as silage or animal intake, 15-26% was lost through surface runoff or lateral drainage and 1.14% was emitted to the atmosphere as N₂O. About 13% of the manure N applied to the NWFP and excreta N deposited at grazing was lost via ammonia volatilisation.

SIGNIFICANCE

The extended model has the potential to investigate the responses of the system on and consequences of a range of agronomic management and grazing strategies. However, modelling of multi-species swards needs to be validated including the dynamics of individual species in the swards, preferential selection by grazing animals and the impact on animal growth and nutrient flows.

Inhibition of corrosion causing Pseudomonas aeruginosa using plasma-activated water

AIMS

The cost of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) significantly affects a wide range of sectors. This study aims to assess the efficiency of a novel technology based on the use of plasma-activated water (PAW) in inhibiting corrosion caused by bacteria.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This study evaluated the effectiveness of PAW, produced by a plasma bubble reactor, in reducing corrosion causing Pseudomonas aeruginosa planktonic cells in tap water and biofilms were grown onto stainless steel (SS) coupons. Planktonic cells and biofilms were treated with PAW at different discharge frequencies (500-1500 Hz) and exposure times (0-20 min). P. aeruginosa cells in tap water were significantly reduced after treatment, with higher exposure times and discharge frequencies achieving higher reductions. Also, PAW treatment led to a gradual reduction for young and mature biofilms, achieving >4-Log reductions after 20 min. Results were also used to develop two predictive inactivation models.

CONCLUSIONS

This work presents evidence that PAW can be used to inactivate both planktonic cells and biofilms of P. aeruginosa. Experimental and theoretical results also demonstrate that reduction is dependent on discharge frequency and exposure time.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This work demonstrates the potential of using PAW as means to control MIC.

Farmyard manure application and associated root proliferation improve the net greenhouse gas balance of Italian ryegrass - Maize double-cropping field in Nasu, Japan

In Japan, most cows are fed indoors, so cow manure must be carefully treated and used to manage soil fertility. The objective of this study was to compare the net greenhouse gas (GHG) balance (NGHGB) of Italian ryegrass - corn (maize) double-cropping fields receiving farmyard manure (FYM), slurry, or methane fermentation digestion liquid (MFDL). FYM, Slurry, MFDL, mineral fertilizer only (Fert.), and no-N control (Cont.) plots were set up in a randomized block design (n = 3). FYM, slurry, or MFDL was applied to meet the K requirement for forage production, and then mineral fertilizers were supplemented to meet the N and P requirements. From September 2017 to September 2020, C inputs as manure and crop residue, heterotrophic respiration (R_H), and emissions of methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) from soil were determined. The similarity of the total yields in FYM, Slurry, MFDL, and Fert. plots reflected judicious fertility management. However, the residue-C input of Italian ryegrass was 38% greater in FYM plots than in the other plots. Manure-C input decreased in the order of FYM > Slurry > MFDL plots. R_H was greater in FYM and Slurry plots than in MFDL plots. Net ecosystem C balance (NECB) ([residue-C + manure-C] - [R_H-C + CH₄-C]) decreased in the order of FYM > Slurry > MFDL plots. N₂O emission was greater in Slurry and MFDL plots than in FYM plots. Consequently, NGHGB ([CH₄ and N₂O emissions] - NECB) in terms of CO₂ equivalent decreased in the order of MFDL > Slurry > FYM plots, so FYM application contributed most to GHG mitigation. Yield-scaled NGHGB was smallest in FYM plots owing to the synergy of the greatest residue-C and manure-C inputs, less N₂O emission, and the achievement of a high enough yield, reflecting judicious fertility management based on manure and mineral fertilizer.

The Role of Anaerobic Digestion in Reducing Dairy Farm Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from dairy farms are significant contributors to global warming. However, much of the published work on GHG reduction is focused on either methane (CH4) or nitrous oxide (N2O), with few, if any, considering the interactions that changes to farming systems can have on both gases. This paper takes the raw data from a year of activity on a 300-cow commercial dairy farm in Northern Ireland to more accurately quantify GHG sources by use of a simple predictive model based on IPCC methodology. Differing herd management policies are examined together with the impact of integrating anaerobic digestion (AD) into each farming system. Whilst significant success can be predicted in capturing CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) as biogas and preventing N2O emissions, gains made can be lost in a subsequent process, negating some or all of the advantage. The process of extracting value from the captured resource is discussed in light of current farm parameters together with indications of other potential revenue streams. However, this study has concluded that despite the significant potential for GHG reduction, there is little incentive for widespread adoption of manure-based farm-scale AD in the UK at this time.

Field Application of Organic Fertilizers Triggers N2O Emissions From the Soil N Pool as Indicated by 15N-Labeled Digestates

Anaerobic digestion (AD) can generate biogas while simultaneously producing digestate which can be used as fertilizer. Feedstocks used for AD influence digestate composition, which in turn may affect carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) turn-over in soils and subsequently influence nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions after soil application. Assessment of greenhouse gas emissions from digestates can help to evaluate the overall sustainability of an agricultural production system. The objective of this study was therefore to evaluate and understand the effect of differences in digestate composition on in situ N2O emissions within the 1st weeks after application of seven digestates. The digestates were derived from different feedstocks and 15N-labeled, either in total N or only in ammonium-N. Therefore, the experimental design enabled us to differentiate between potential N2O-N sources (i.e., digestate N or soil N). Furthermore, it allowed to distinguish to some extent between organic-N and ammonium-N as potential N sources for denitrification. Digestates were homogeneously incorporated into the upper 5 cm of microplots in an arable Haplic Luvisol in South Germany at a rate of 170 kg N ha−1. After application, N2O fluxes were measured for ~60 days (May-July) using the closed chamber method in 2 experimental years. Mainly due to higher precipitations in the 1st year, cumulative N2O emissions were higher (312–1,580 g N2O-N ha−1) compared to the emissions (133–690 g N2O-N ha−1) in the 2nd year. Between 16–33% (1st year) and 17–38% (2nd year) of N2O emissions originated from digestate N, indicating that digestate application triggered N2O production and release mainly from soil N. This effect was strongest immediately after digestate application. It was concluded that the first (short term) peak in N2O emissions after digestate application is largely related to denitrification of soil-N. However, the experimental setup does not allow to differentiate between the different denitrification pathways. Weather conditions showed a substantial effect on N2O emissions, where the correlation between N2O and CO2 flux rates hinted on denitrification as main N2O source. The effect of digestate composition, particularly organic N from the digestate, on soil N2O emissions seems to be of minor relevance.

Global Research Alliance N2 O chamber methodology guidelines: Recommendations for deployment and accounting for sources of variability

Adequately estimating soil nitrous oxide (N₂ O) emissions using static chambers is challenging due to the high spatial variability and episodic nature of these fluxes. We discuss how to design experiments using static chambers to better account for this variability and reduce the uncertainty of N₂ O emission estimates. This paper is part of a series, each discussing different facets of N₂ O chamber methodology. Aspects of experimental design and sampling affected by spatial variability include site selection and chamber layout, size, and areal coverage. Where used, treatment application adds a further level of spatial variability. Time of day, frequency, and duration of sampling (both individual chamber closure and overall experiment duration) affect the temporal variability captured. We also present best practice recommendations for chamber installation and sampling protocols to reduce further uncertainty. To obtain the best N₂ O emission estimates, resources should be allocated to minimize the overall uncertainty in line with experiment objectives. Sometimes this will mean prioritizing individual flux measurements and increasing their accuracy and precision by, for example, collecting four or more headspace samples during each chamber closure. However, where N₂ O fluxes are exceptionally spatially variable (e.g., in heterogeneous agricultural landscapes, such as uneven and woody grazed pastures), using available resources to deploy more chambers with fewer headspace samples per chamber may be beneficial. Similarly, for particularly episodic N₂ O fluxes, generated for example by irrigation or freeze-thaw cycles, increasing chamber sampling frequency will improve the accuracy and reduce the uncertainty of temporally interpolated N₂ O fluxes.
