Abstract
Background/Objectives: This study investigates the temperature changes on the external root surface during root canal preparation using different rotary systems and assesses the impact of irrigation temperatures. Methods: Sixty extracted human maxillary incisors were divided into four groups based on the rotary system used: ProTaper Next (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), Reciproc Blue (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany), WaveOne Gold (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and TruNatomy (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland). These systems differ in cutting efficiency and design. Temperature measurements during instrumentation and irrigation were recorded using a FLIR E60bx thermal camera (Teledyne FLIR LLC, Hudson, NH, USA). Irrigations were conducted with sodium hypochlorite at room temperature and heated to 60 °C. Results: The ProTaper Next group exhibited the highest average temperature increase during instrumentation (5.2 °C), followed by WaveOne Gold (4.3 °C), Reciproc Blue (3.7 °C), and TruNatomy (2.8 °C). During irrigation with heated sodium hypochlorite, temperature rises recorded were 6.8 °C for ProTaper Next, 5.9 °C for WaveOne Gold, 5.2 °C for Reciproc Blue, and 4.1 °C for TruNatomy. Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between dentin thickness and temperature rise, with r-values ranging from -0.62 to -0.87 across the groups. No significant correlation was found between canal diameter and temperature change, indicating that the canal's size does not influence the thermal impact as much as the properties of the rotary system and irrigation temperature. Conclusions: Different rotary systems produce varying levels of temperature increases on the external root surface, influenced significantly by the thickness of the dentin and the temperature of the irrigation solution. These variations necessitate careful selection of instrumentation and irrigation protocols to minimize potential thermal damage to surrounding periodontal tissues.

Abstract
Objective This study assessed the perceptions among dental interns regarding intracanal fracture of endodontic instruments. Methodology This cross-sectional observational study was performed among 206 dental interns working in Saudi Arabia. A validated questionnaire encompassing 15 close-ended questions was used. The questionnaire consisted of two components: the first component (Section I) gathered demographic details, and the second part (Section II) examined the causes of EFS during root canal treatment. A Pearson's Chi-square test was applied to determine the association of perceptions of EFS during endodontic procedures between male and female interns. Results The study findings showed that out of 206 dental interns, 107 (51.9%) were males and 99 (48.1%) were females. The perceptions regarding intracanal instrument fracture revealed that hand files (71 (34.5%)) were less likely to break than rotary files (132 (64.1%)). Around 152 (73.8%) respondents said that stainless steel was the most frequently broken alloy. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between gender and the belief that operator expertise plays a role in preventing instrument fracture. Conclusion This study concluded that dental interns were aware of factors contributing to file separation during endodontic treatment. They believed fractures were more common in the apical third of posterior teeth, preferred Nickel Titanium for instruments, and thought hand files were less prone to fracture than rotary files.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed (i) to assess the perception of dental undergraduate (1st degree dental students) learners about endodontic file separation (EFS) and knowledge of its avoidance, as well as (ii) to aid dental educators in conceptualizing and designing student-directed courses for better understanding. The rationale of this study was to provide both learners and educators with a tool to help self-assess/impart knowledge and devise simple yet innovative modern ways of teaching in the field of endodontics. The study utilized a self-reporting dataset from one institution to disclose this limitation. MATERIALS A validated self-administered questionnaire from a previous study was converted into an online Google form link consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions. This was distributed to 100 Year 4 and Year 5 1st degree dental students. Pearson chi-square test was used for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS The response rate was 81%. The majority of the learners expressed that performing endodontic treatment in permanent (100%) posterior teeth of old-aged people causes EFS (95.1%). Ninety-nine percent answered that EFS was a gender-independent factor, 72.8% perceived that patient anxiety leads to EFS, and 88.9% said that the apical third was more prone to instrument fracture and had the poorest prognosis (95.1%). Hundred percent, 93.8%, 100%, 92.6%, 100%, and 97.5% of respondents, respectively, perceived that the role of operator, coronal flare, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel, cleaning endodontic instrument, reusing instrument, and choice of instrument affects the occurrence of EFS. A total of 71.6% said hand files fractured, while 86.4% perceived that stainless steel alloy files separated easily, and 69.1% of learners perceived that EFS occurred often during the cleaning and shaping stage. CONCLUSIONS The perception of 1st degree dental students regarding EFS and knowledge of its avoidance was good. Results from this study confirmed that the 1st degree dental students' clinical training courses and study modules adopted and designed by their dental educators were well-suited and appropriate.

Abstract
Objectives To clinically evaluate the effectiveness of rotary (ProTaper Next [PTN]) and reciprocating (Wave One Gold [WOG]) instrumentation techniques in eliminating bacteria from the root canals of teeth with apical periodontitis during a single-visit root canal treatment. Materials and methods Forty patients were randomly assigned to the WOG or PTN instrumentation techniques groups. A single-visit root canal treatment was performed on all the patients. In both groups, root canals were irrigated with 10 ml of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and the final irrigation protocol was applied. Microbiological samples from the root canal were collected initially (Sample 1), after chemo-mechanical instrumentation (Sample 2), and after the final irrigation protocol (Sample 3). Quantification of bacteria at each stage of root canal treatment was performed using the culture method (colony-forming units [CFUs]), and bacterial species were identified using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Results There were 55 aerobic and anaerobic bacterial species identified. Chemo-mechanical root canal treatment with both instrumentation techniques and the final irrigation protocol significantly reduced the number of CFUs (p<0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in antibacterial efficacy between WOG and PTN groups (p>0.05). Conclusion Although both root canal instrumentation techniques were highly effective in removing bacteria from the necrotic canals of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis, no complete eradication of bacteria was found in any sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the perspectives, preferences, and clinical experiences regarding using electronic apex locator and apex locator integrated instrumentation of dentists and endodontists. METHODS A web-based questionnaire consisting of 3 parts and 23 closed-ended questions to achieve the objective of the study was carried out in ethical conditions between August and October 2023. The first part of survey included demographic information, while the second part was about evaluating electronic apex locator usage. In the last part, only participants' use of apex locator-integrated instrumentation was evaluated. Data were analyzed at a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS A total of 297 clinicians, including 59 endodontists and 34 endodontic residents/Ph.D. students participated in the questionnaire. Endodontists and endodontic residents/Ph.D. students perform statistically significantly more root canal treatments per week on average (p = 0.001). For the working length determination method (multiple option question), 78.5% of participants use an electronic apex locator and 39.7% apex locator-integrated engines. However, the preference rate for electronic apex determination technique was generally 95.6%, with the full rate confirmation of endodontists and endodontic residents/Ph.D. students (100%). A total of 21 endodontists out of 59 prefer apex locator integrated engine-driven instrumentation. Although many of these specialized clinicians use this technique, they stated that they measure electronic working length passively for confirmation of the working length before (90.5%) and after the preparation (66.7%). CONCLUSIONS Dentists, as well as endodontists, are skeptical about apex locator-integrated engine-driven instrumentation. Using this technique as a supporter rather than a primary way for preparation within safe limits may give safer results in terms of treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Aim This study compares the cyclic fatigue resistance of glide path files versus manual files used with a reciprocating handpiece in simulated curved canals, specifically evaluating WaveOne Gold Glider, ProGlider, stainless steel (S.S.) K files, nickel-titanium (NiTi) K files, and Flexo K files. Materials and methods Seventy-five instruments were divided into five groups of 15. Simulated canals with a 45° angle and a 5 mm radius of curvature were created using laser micromachining on S.S. blocks. A reciprocating endodontic handpiece (TEP-ER10, NSK, Japan) was used for the manual files and an X-Smart Plus endo motor for the rotary files. The time to fracture was recorded via videography. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey tests. Results Flexo files exhibited the highest mean cyclic fatigue resistance (1690.33 ± 456.97 seconds), followed by WaveOne Gold Glider (872.13 ± 210.08 seconds), NiTi K files (760.73 ± 163.86 seconds), S.S. K files (707.60 ± 257.98 seconds), and ProGlider (371.00 ± 66.02 seconds). Fragment length differences were statistically insignificant among the groups. ANOVA showed significant differences in cyclic fatigue resistance but not in fragment length. Conclusion Flexo files showed superior cyclic fatigue resistance, making them ideal for glide path formation. NiTi and S.S. K files with a reciprocating handpiece performed similarly to WaveOne Gold Glider, providing a cost-effective alternative to rotary systems, especially in resource-limited areas. ProGlider had the lowest resistance, highlighting the advantage of reciprocating motion in enhancing durability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effectiveness of endodontic files relies significantly on the characteristics of the outermost layer, which can be greatly improved through suitable surface treatments and appropriate coatings. Graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been utilized to fabricate nanocomposite coatings aimed at improving surface characteristics and mechanical behavior, including resilience, sustainability, oxidation resistance, solidity, and traction. AIM This research aims to study the surface topography of a nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) pediatric rotary file coated with graphene oxide (GO) using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). METHODS The study utilized Ni-Ti pediatric rotary instruments that were 16 mm long and had the same ISO tip size of #25. The Ni-Ti pediatric rotary files had a titanium oxide coating that needed to be removed for the application of the GO coating. The GO coating was applied to the files using an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) procedure. Data were gathered to evaluate the surface topography and structural profiles of the GO-coated endodontic files through SEM analysis. RESULTS SEM imaging showed that the GO coatings consisted of numerous layers of GO sheets, which were uniformly and thoroughly applied to the endodontic instrument. A substantial portion of the GO layers aligned with neighboring layers along the edges, creating a continuous structure. CONCLUSION GO coatings were effectively applied to Ni-Ti endodontic instruments using EPD. The deposition of the GO coating is consistent throughout the surface of the Ni-Ti rotary instrument.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This systematic review aimed to compare reciprocating with continuous rotary instrumentation kinematics, by means of microcomputed tomography evaluations, in extracted human permanent teeth with moderate and severe canal curvatures. METHODS The research protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews and given the reference number CRD42023404035. An electronic search was undertaken in MEDLINE (PubMed), EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science databases until December 2021. Manual screening of issues in endodontic journals and references of relevant articles were assessed individually. The risk of bias (RoB) of the included articles was evaluated with the QUIN tool (Quality Assessment Tool for In Vitro Studies). RESULTS Among 1640 retrieved articles, 49 were included in the qualitative synthesis. Fifteen articles had low RoB, 33 articles had medium RoB, and only 1 study was at high RoB. Continuous rotary systems had better centering ability in both moderate and severe canal curvatures and resulted in less apical transportation in severely curved root canals. None of the kinematic systems was capable of instrumenting the entire canal surface area. Reciprocating kinematics systems tended to provide higher increase in surface area of severely curved canals and produced fewer dentinal microcracks in moderately curved canals. CONCLUSIONS The evidence presented in this review suggests that continuous rotary system seems to be better than reciprocating system in solving the major issues encountered during root canal instrumentation of extracted teeth with moderate and severe curvatures.

Additionally, the review addresses the challenges presented by the complex anatomy of the root canal system and the advent of current instrumentation techniques. The potential of emerging trends, including artificial intelligence and advances in materials science, is discussed in the context of future endodontic practices. Despite the progress, challenges related to using advanced instrumentation methods, ethical considerations, and the cost factor of new technologies persist. The present review underscores the ongoing need for research and development to further refine root canal instrumentation techniques, ensuring that advancements in endodontic care remain patient-centered and accessible.

Abstract
This in vitro study aims to assess the cyclic fatigue resistance of the Protaper Ultimate (PTU) files compared to the Protaper Gold (PTG) and the M3 UDG (M3) files using various motion kinematics in simulated canals. As far as the authors are aware, no study has previously compared the three file systems before this current investigation. Therefore, closing this information gap is the goal of the current research. Methods: A total of (60 new endodontic files were randomly divided into 6 groups (10 files per group); groups 1, 3, and 5 used continuous rotation (CR), while groups 2, 4, and 6 used forward reciprocating motion (FRM). A manufactured stainless-steel artificial canal was used to perform the cyclic fatigue testing. The results were analyzed using Student's t-test and two-way ANOVA. All pairwise comparisons revealed statistically significant differences in the time to failure (TTF) for every study group (p < 0.001), with the exception of the PTG and M3 files, which performed similarly using both CR and FRM. Conclusions: The PTU files performed better than the PTG and M3 files in terms of the TTF and number of cycles to failure (NCF) using both CR and FRM.

Abstract
AIM AND BACKGROUND To compare the root canal volume in primary teeth using hand and rotary instruments and to evaluate root canal filling techniques and flow of root canal obturation materials in the postinstrumented root canal volume using spiral computed tomography (SCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Freshly extracted 16 primary molars were randomly divided into two groups and subjected to SCT analysis before and after instrumentation. For the manual technique (group I) with eight teeth were prepared using K files, and rotary (group II) eight teeth preparation was performed with ProTaper files. The filled volume in each canal was measured using SCT, and the percentage of obturated volume was calculated. The data were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference in both groups' volume of root canals enlarged. Even though both K files and the ProTaper system brought about enlarged canals after instrumentation, there was a statistically significant increase in volume after using K files in two canals. In three canals, there was a statistically significant increase in volume after using ProTaper. Irrespective of the obturation technique and materials used, there is no statistically significant difference in the volume after obturation. CONCLUSION From the results of this study, the ProTaper file system shows suitable volumetric enlargement up to an optimum level, which is needed in primary root canal walls, and is better in canal shaping, as evidenced by good postobturation volume. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The traditional method of cleaning and shaping the root canals in permanent teeth using manual stainless-steel files can lead to undesirable curvatures in root canal morphology, making correctly filling the root canals difficult. It is also time-consuming and sometimes leads to iatrogenic errors. Rotary nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) instrumentation techniques have been developed to overcome these problems. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study investigates the behavior of graphene and GUM in terms of cyclic fatigue resistance and torsion through a finite element analysis on a file with an eccentric rectangular cross section and variable taper, and on a file with a centered triangular cross section, constant taper, and constant pitch. METHODS Root canals and endodontic files were created using Catia V5R21 software. For torsional analysis, the tip of the file was fixed at 1 and 3 mm, and a moment of 2.5 N-mm was generated at the handle. For the bending analysis in curved canals (45° and 60°), the handle was kept fixed and a force of 1 N was applied at the tip while the file was kept fixed at 9 mm. RESULTS GUM metal instruments showed better torsional resistance. On the other hand, NiTi and graphene performed better under the applied loads during flexion at 45° and 60°. CONCLUSION GUM metal is emerging as a promising material in the field of endodontic instrument design due to its physical properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The initial size of a root canal is established by progressively introducing K-files according to the increase in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) size in the apical region. The initial file-fit sensation is caused by coronal interferences rather than always occurring at the apex, as is commonly believed. Flaring the canal at its earliest stages enables the practitioner to accurately assess the size of the canal approaching the apex. This enables more informed judgments on the selection of the master apical file required for shaping and cleaning the apex. The aim of this in vitro study is to examine the impact of cervical flaring on the first estimation of apical file size using three distinct rotary instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four extracted permanent maxillary first molars with a curvature of between 10⁰ and 20⁰ were chosen. Conventional access openings were made, and the precise length of the canal was determined, leaving it 1 mm short of the apex. The apical fit was deemed to have materialized when the largest file successfully reached the apex, and further progression beyond that depth was unattainable. An initial file that exhibited tactile resistance both before and following expansion at the designated working length (WL) was observed. The initial file that elicited a sensation of being securely attached was affixed using methacrylate into the root canal. A diamond sectioning disc was used to horizontally cut the apical 0.5 mm of the mesiobuccal root. This was done to expose the canal and the instrument at the WL. The uppermost portions were observed using a 3D optical profilometer, and digital photographs were captured for each sample. RESULTS The occurrence of coronal interferences and the choice of instruments for flaring had a notable impact on the estimation of the initial apical file (IAF) size. The file size frequency was augmented following flaring using various rotary instruments, namely ProTaper, HyFlex CM, and Endoflare. Group 1, which did not undergo preflaring, exhibited the highest disparity of 257.3 ± 54.4. The variation was substantially different (p<0.01) from all the groups that underwent flaring. The use of HyFlex CM (group 3) for preflaring resulted in the smallest average difference (124.4 ± 29.6) between the maximum diameter of the canal at the apex and the diameter of the initial file used. Endoflare (group 4) exhibited the second lowest mean disparity (178.7 ± 46) between the maximum width of the apical root canal and the diameter of the IAF, with the ProTaper group (211 ± 43.5) following closely behind. Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant discrepancy observed in the average differences between groups 2 and 4 (ProTaper and Endoflare groups, respectively). CONCLUSION Coronal preflaring significantly contributes to minimizing the variation between the IAF and the diameter of the apical canal. Prior coronal expansion using rotary files enables a more precise identification of the IAF. The choice of equipment used for flaring affects the estimation of the IAF size.

Abstract
(1) Background: The failure of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files is a complication related to endodontic instruments. The aim of this study was to compare the resistance to cyclic fatigue between rotary and reciprocating file systems. (2) Methods: Specific PICO: Population (P): artificial root canals; Interventions (I): instrumentation with NiTi rotary and reciprocating files; Comparison (C): rotary versus reciprocating files; Outcome (O): cyclic fatigue resistance. Studies were identified through bibliographic research using electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Scopus, SciELO, and WOS). The studies were combined using a random effects model by the inverse variance method. The effect size was the mean of the time to fracture (TTF) and number of cycles to fracture (NCF). Heterogeneity was assessed using the p value of the Q test for heterogeneity and the I2. (3) Results: TTF for rotary files was determined in 474.5 s and 839.1 for reciprocating without statistically significant differences. NCF for rotary systems was determined in 1444.2 and for reciprocating file systems in 4155.9 with statistically significant differences (p = 0.035), making reciprocating files more resistant. (4) Conclusions: Reciprocating files have better resistance to cyclic fatigue than rotary files. When tested in double curvature canals, reciprocating files also showed higher resistance.

Abstract
Stent implantation is a commonly used palliative treatment for alleviating stenosis in advanced esophageal cancer. However, tissue proliferation induced by stent implantation and continuous tumor growth can easily lead to restenosis. Therefore, functional stents are required to relieve stenosis while inhibiting tissue proliferation and tumor growth, thereby extending the patency. Currently, no ideal functional stents are available. Here, iodine-125 (125 I) nuclides are encapsulated into a nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) tube to develop a novel temperature-memory spiral radionuclide stent (TSRS). It has the characteristics of temperature-memory, no cold regions at the end of the stent, and a uniform spatial dose distribution. Cell-viability experiments reveal that the TSRS can reduce the proliferation of fibroblasts and tumor cells. TSRS implantation is feasible and safe, has no significant systemic radiotoxicity, and can inhibit in-stent and edge stenosis caused by stent-induced tissue proliferation in healthy rabbits. Moreover, TSRS can improve malignant stenosis and luminal patency resulting from continuous tumor growth in a VX2 esophageal cancer model. As a functional stent, the TSRS combines the excellent properties of NiTi with brachytherapy of the 125 I nuclide and will make significant contributions to the treatment of malignant esophageal stenosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review/meta-analysis investigated the influence of NaOCl on cyclic fatigue resistance of endodontic NiTi instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic search until July 2022 in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, Cochrane Library, and grey literature was conducted. According to the PECOS strategy, only in vitro studies evaluating the effects of NaOCl on the cyclic fatigue resistance of NiTi instruments were eligible. Cyclic fatigue resistance was the primary outcome. A modified Joanna Briggs Institute's Checklist was used for risk of bias assessment. RESULTS Of the 2,445 records screened, 37 studies were included. Most studies used simulated canals made of stainless-steel block with severe to moderate curvatures. NaOCl concentration varied from 1-6%, mainly at 37 °C. Regarding fatigue resistance, 23 studies using 1.2% to 6% NaOCl showed a reduction in the resistance compared to the control groups, especially when pre-heated. Four meta-analyses were performed according to the tested NiTi systems. The meta-analyses indicated that the PTU F2 files had higher reduction of fatigue resistance after exposure to 5.25% NaOCl; no differences between NaOCl and no immersion were observed for Reciproc R25, WaveOne 25.08, and WaveOne Gold Primary files. Included studies had low risk of bias. CONCLUSION NaOCl appears to reduce cyclic fatigue resistance of certain NiTi files, especially when they are pre-heated, particularly in conventional NiTi files compared to some heat-treated instruments. It is possible that the temperature of the solution may have a greater influence on resistance than NaOCl itself. Important to note that an overall tendency toward no significant influence was observed among various systems. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Precautions are necessary when a pre-heated high-concentration NaOCl is used to enhance its properties during root canal preparation, mainly using conventional wire.

Abstract
Endodontic orthograde retreatments are considered one of the possible treatment options in case of post-treatment diseases considering the promising results present in the literature. Despite this, a plethora of articles have been published on this topic, and drawing conclusions could be challenging. For this reason, this review aims to summarize the crucial points on each aspect of non-surgical endodontic retreatments, discussing and comparing the current protocols, techniques, materials, and indications. Taking into consideration data from the literature, in terms of diagnosis, CBCT should be considered the first choice, since it can thoroughly affect the diagnosis and treatment plan. Regarding the procedural phases, some conclusions can be drawn: when present, coronal restoration materials such as crowns, partial prostheses, post, and core should be removed; the use of magnification devices, ultrasonic instruments, and an in-depth interpretation of radiographic images with both 2D and 3D images are strongly recommended during the orifice location; additional protocols such as irrigants activation, ultrasonic cleaning, and rotary or reciprocating instrumentation of treated canals are strongly recommended for filling materials removal and to achieve a high-quality chemo-mechanical disinfection; perforations should be treated as soon as possible, and the material of choice to treat them is the MTA or other calcium-silicate-based repair materials; the presence of ledges does not intrinsically reduce the success rate of RCRts if properly managed; in case of instrument fragments, their removal should be considered as the first treatment option, however many variables should be considered to select the proper technique or consider the option of bypassing.

Abstract
AIM To estimate the working length of teeth using conventional tactile technique, radiovisiography technique, Apex locator, and confirmation of working length by cone beam computed tomography technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with the age group between 20 and 50 years with irreversible pulpitis were included in this study. After taking a preoperative radiograph, the procedure was started. The cavity wall buildup was done using composite in the cases needed and then rubber dam application was done. The working length of mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canal was taken using cone beam computed tomography and this was considered as the standard value. Then using tactile method, length of the canal was measured using radiovisiographic software followed by apexlocator. RESULT The Apex locator has showed best result as compared to tactile and radiovisiography. CONCLUSION Apex locator values were closest to cone beam computed tomography working length measurement values and electronic apexlocator can be used efficiently as an alternative method for working length determination. The quality of various techniques according to ranks of working length determination was found to be Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) > Apexloc > Radiovisiography (RVG) > Tactile. Thus, Apex locator can be used as an alternative to cone beam computed tomography for working length determination.

Abstract
The flexibility of NiTi based endodontic files is improved by heat treatment, leading to lower risk of failure, ledges, and canal transportation during the preparation of curved root canals. The aim of this study is to investigate and clearly highlight the influence of every parameter of heat treatment on the flexibility of NiTi wires and thus of endodontic instruments. A full factorial Design of Experiment (DoE) and a designed bending-torsion bench following the ISO 3630-1 standard were used for this investigation. Temperature, holding time, and cooling method were selected as contributing factors, while maximum bending moment, hysteresis size, and stiffness during martensitic transformation were selected as outputs. Regression analysis was performed to estimate the relationship between contributing and output variables to assess how the experimentation fits with the model. The experimental results showed that wires heated at 425 °C for 30 min are more flexible. Moreover, heat treatment temperature is the most critical factor influencing the flexibility and hysteresis size of the NiTi wire followed by the holding time, while the cooling method has a negligible effect. The regression analysis showed that the model is effective at predicting the relationship between contributing factors, bending moment response, and hysteresis size.

Abstract
Background and Objectives. To differentiate the intensity of postoperative pain after primary molar pulpectomy employing manual instrumentation versus two single-file systems with different kinetics (the XP-Endo shaper file with adaptive instrumentation vs. the Kedo-SG blue file with continuous rotation instrumentation). Materials and Methods. This three-arm, single-blind, randomized clinical trial included assessing 75 healthy children between 4 to 9 years who required pulpectomy for primary molars (mandibular first and second). The three groups each had an equal number of children. Children in Group 1 had their teeth instrumented with the XP-endo Shaper, children in Group 2 had their teeth instrumented with the Kedo-SG Blue file, and children in Group 3 had their teeth instrumented manually using K-files. The degree of postoperative pain was measured using a four-point pain scale at 6-, 12-, 24-, 48-, and 72-h following therapy. Each participant's parent received five flashcards with four faces and a word characterizing each face. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests. The level of significance was set to 5%. Results. During the follow-up period, there was a significant difference in postoperative pain intensity between the three groups. The XP-endo shaper was associated with considerably decreased post operative at the 6- and 12-h interval followed by Kedo-SG. The highest post-operative discomfort across the groups was related to the patients who underwent manual instrumentation. Conclusion. In comparison to rotary and manual instrumentation, postoperative pain severity was reduced with adaptive instrumentation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Root canal treatment (RoCT), or endodontic treatment, is a common procedure in dentistry. The main indications for RoCT are irreversible pulpitis and necrosis of the dental pulp caused by carious processes, coronal crack or fracture, or dental trauma. Successful RoCT is characterised by an absence of symptoms (i.e. pain) and clinical signs (i.e. swelling and sinus tract) in teeth without radiographic evidence of periodontal involvement (i.e. normal periodontal ligament). The success of RoCT depends on a number of variables related to the preoperative condition of the tooth, as well as the endodontic procedures. RoCT can be carried out with a single-visit approach, which involves root canal system obturation (filling and sealing) directly after instrumentation and irrigation, or with a multiple-visits approach, in which the treatment is completed in two or more sessions and obturation is performed in the last session. This review updates the previous versions published in 2007 and 2016. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the benefits and harms of completion of root canal treatment (RoCT) in a single visit compared to RoCT over two or more visits, with or without medication, in people aged over 10 years. SEARCH METHODS We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date was 25 April 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials and quasi-randomised controlled trials in people needing RoCT comparing completion of RoCT in a single visit compared to RoCT over two or more visits. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We used standard Cochrane methods. Our primary outcomes were 1. tooth extraction and 2. radiological failure after at least one year (i.e. periapical radiolucency). Our secondary outcomes were 3. postoperative and postobturation pain; 4. swelling or flare-up; 5. analgesic use and 6. presence of sinus track or fistula after at least one month. We used GRADE to assess certainty of evidence for each outcome. We excluded five studies that were included in the previous version of the review because they did not meet the current standard of care (i.e. rubber dam isolation and irrigation with sodium hypochlorite). MAIN RESULTS We included 47 studies with 5805 participants and 5693 teeth analysed. We judged 10 studies at low risk of bias, 17 at high risk of bias and 20 at unclear risk of bias. Only two studies reported data on tooth extraction. We found no evidence of a difference between treatment in one visit or treatment over multiple visits, but we had very low certainty about the findings (risk ratio (RR) 0.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.09 to 2.50; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 402 teeth). We found no evidence of a difference between single-visit and multiple-visit treatment in terms of radiological failure (RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.07; I2 = 0%; 13 studies, 1505 teeth; moderate-certainty evidence). We found evidence of a higher proportion of participants reporting pain within one week in single-visit groups compared to multiple visit groups (RR 1.55, 95% CI 1.14 to 2.09; I2 = 18%; 5 studies, 638 teeth; moderate-certainty evidence). We found no evidence of a difference in the proportion of participants reporting pain until 72 hours postobturation (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.16; I2 = 70%; 12 studies, 1329 teeth; low-certainty evidence), pain intensity until 72 hours postobturation (mean difference (MD) 0.26, 95% CI -4.76 to 5.29; I2 = 98%; 12 studies, 1258 teeth; low-certainty evidence) or pain at one week postobturation (RR 1.05, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.67; I2 = 61%; 9 studies, 1139 teeth; very low-certainty evidence). We found no evidence of a difference in swelling or flare-up incidence (RR 0.56 95% CI 0.16 to 1.92; I2 = 0%; 6 studies; 605 teeth; very low-certainty evidence), analgesic use (RR 1.25 95% CI 0.75 to 2.09; I2 = 36%; 6 studies, 540 teeth; very low-certainty evidence) or sinus tract or fistula presence (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.24 to 4.28; I2 = 0%; 5 studies, 650 teeth; very low-certainty evidence). Subgroup analysis found no differences between single-visit and multiple-visit RoCT for considered outcomes other than proportion of participants reporting post-treatment pain within one week, which was higher in the single-visit groups for vital teeth (RR 2.16, 95% CI 1.39 to 3.36; I2 = 0%; 2 studies, 316 teeth), and when instrumentation was mechanical (RR 1.80, 95% CI 1.10 to 2.92; I2 = 56%; 2 studies, 278 teeth). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS As in the previous two versions of the review, there is currently no evidence to suggest that one treatment regimen (single-visit or multiple-visit RoCT) is more effective than the other. Neither regimen can prevent pain and other complications in the 12-month postoperative period. There was moderate-certainty evidence of higher proportion of participants reporting pain within one week in single-visit groups compared to multiple-visit groups. In contrast to the results of the last version of the review, there was no difference in analgesic use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of different heat treatments and temperatures on the cyclic fatigue resistance of 2Shape instruments (Micro Mega, Besancon, France) with the same design. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 80 2Shape TS1 (#25/.04) and 80 TS2 (#25/.06) files with different heat treatments (no heat-treated, NHT; C-Wire; T-Wire; CM-Wire) were tested at room (25° ± 1 °C) and body (37° ± 1 °C) temperatures in 16-mm stainless steel artificial canal with a curvature of 60° and 5 mm of radius. Files were tested in continuous rotation at 300 rpm using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was expressed in the number of cyclic to fracture (NCF). The phase transformation temperature of each file was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Data were statistically analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni post-hoc test with p < 0.05. RESULTS All CM-Wire TS1 and TS2 files showed higher NCF than the other groups at both temperatures (p < 0.001). C-Wire TS2 showed higher resistance than NHT and T-Wire TS2 (p < 0.001), with no significant differences between the last two. Body temperature significantly decreased NCF of all tested files (p < 0.05) except for NHT and T-Wire TS1. CONCLUSIONS Body temperature negatively affected the cyclic fatigue resistance of C-Wire and CM-Wire TS1 and of all TS2 files compared with room temperature. The CM-Wire instruments exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance of all tested files. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Heat-treated nickel-titanium files can differently perform according to environmental temperature and file dimensions. The CM-Wire 2Shape prototypes displayed the highest flexural resistance in all experimental conditions.

Abstract
Background Mandibular molars are multi-rooted teeth with a complex and strenuous root canal anatomy. Because there is relatively negligible literature describing the pulp chamber floor anatomy, predicting the exact anatomical layout and its variations is daunting. A thorough comprehension and knowledge of the same is required for efficacious endodontic treatment consequence. The purpose of this study was to characterise and ascertain the pulp chamber floor anatomy of permanent mandibular first (ManFMs) and second (ManSMs) molars in an Indian population. Methods On 2,134 extracted human mandibular first (ManFMs = 1,067) and second molars (ManSMs = 1,067), a descriptive cross-sectional investigation was executed. Cleaning and removal of hard and soft tissue debris were performed, followed by flattening the anatomical crown until the pupal architecture was uncovered. A stereomicroscope with a magnification of 4.5 magnification was used to investigate the pulpal anatomy. Statistical analysis was carried out using chi square test, with 95% confidence intervals and a p value of 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results The majority of the ManFMs showed presence of three canal orifices in 57.73%, followed by four orifices 31.31%, five orifices 8.81%, and six orifices 2.15%. For ManSMs, majorly three orifices were found in 39.83% specimens, followed by two orifices in 37.39%, four orifices in 16.31%, and single root canal orifice was observed in 6.47%. The mesio-buccal, mesio-lingual, disto-buccal, disto-lingual canal orifices exhibited round and oval shapes in both ManFMs and ManSMs. The shape was predominantly oval with a single distal canal orifice (84.25% ManFMs and 74.16% ManSMs). In ManSMs, among the single root canal orifice, 66.66% were round in shape and 33.34% were C-shaped. In ManSMs with two root canal orifices, mesially 79.44% exhibited oval and 20.56% round shape. Distally, 74.16% were oval and 25.84% were round. The shapes of the access cavities for ManFMs were rectangular in 46.67% and triangular in 53.33%. For the ManSMs, the access cavities were triangular in 39.83%, rectangular in 16.31% and non-classified (others) in 43.86% of specimen. In both ManFMs and ManSMs, the pulp chamber floor morphology was predominately Y shaped (57.73% and 39.83%) according to the Pawar and Singh classification© of pulp chamber floor anatomy. Conclusion Our study indicated that the orifices on the pulp chamber floor are arranged in a typical manner, supporting the proposed categorization. Furthermore, description of the anatomical patterns of the pulp chamber guides the clinicians in chair-side treatment decisions.

Abstract
The pattern of expansion of endodontic lesions in the jaws has been less commonly addressed in the literature. For this reason, the aim of this study is to assess the pattern of endodontic lesions of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This cross-sectional study was conducted on 317 endodontic lesions of posterior teeth on CBCT scans retrieved from a radiology center in Qazvin, Iran, from 2020 to 2022. Endodontic lesions were assessed on sagittal, coronal, and axial sections by an endodontist and dental student using the Romexis software. The largest lesion diameter was measured occluso-apically, mesiodistally, and buccolingually. Lesion size was analyzed based on age, gender, jaw, tooth type, and presence/absence of root filling by independent samples t-tests and a one-way Analysis Of Variannce (ANOVA). The largest diameter of lesions in the maxilla and mandible was recorded in the occluso-apical dimension followed by buccolingual and mesiodistal dimensions (p > 0.05). The pattern of lesions was the same in teeth with and without endodontic treatment, but it was significantly different in maxillary and mandibular endodontically treated teeth in the occluso-apical and buccolingual dimensions (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was noted with tooth type or jaw except for maxillary and mandibular first molar lesions, which were significantly different in the occluso-apical dimension (p < 0.05). Lesion size in all three dimensions was significantly greater in males than females (p < 0.05), and was the highest in the occluso-apical dimension in both genders. In the maxilla, the mean lesion size significantly decreased in the mesiodistal dimension with age (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the largest lesion diameter in the maxilla and mandible was found in the occluso-apical dimension, indicating the role of bone density in the pattern of lesions.

Abstract
We compared the mechanical properties of 2Shape mini TS2 (Micro-Mega, Besançon, France) obtained from 1.0 diameter nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires and 2Shape TS2 from 1.2 diameter nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires differently thermally treated at room and body temperature. We used 120 NiTi TS2 1.0 and TS2 1.2 files made from controlled memory (CM) wire and T-wire (n = 10). Cyclic fatigue resistance was tested by recording the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) at room and body temperatures using a customized testing device. Maximum torque and angle of rotation at failure were recorded, according to ISO 3630-1. Data were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). The CM-wire files had significantly higher NCFs at both temperatures, independent of wire dimensions. Testing at body temperature negatively affected cyclic fatigue of all files. The 1.0-mm diameter T-wire instruments showed higher NCF than the 1.2-mm diameter, whereas no significant differences emerged between the two CM wires at either temperature. The maximum torque was not significantly different across files. The TS2 CM-wire files showed significantly higher angular rotation to fracture than T-wire files. The TS2 CM-wire prototypes showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance than T-wire prototypes, regardless of wire size, exhibiting suitable torsional properties. Torsional behavior appears to not be affected by NiTi wire size.

Abstract
To study the relationship between structural parameters and mechanical properties of endodontic instruments, the T02004B25 nickel-titanium endodontic instrument was selected for bending and torsion tests and finite element simulation analysis, which demonstrated the feasibility of simulation analysis method. Then based on the idea of parametric design, the models of the endodontic instruments with different structural parameters (cross-section, pitch, taper) were established, and the bending-torsion performance simulation analysis was completed. The results showed that the mechanical properties of endodontic instruments with different structural parameters are different. It is necessary to find the optimal parameters for different structure parameters of endodontic instruments to maximize their service life.

Abstract
Background: There has been no unanimity concerning the ideal concentration of citric acid for safe use in clinical practice. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and the antibacterial activity in infected dentinal tubules of 10% and 1% citric acid (CA) solutions. Methods: The cytotoxicity of CA solutions in DMEM (diluted 1/10, 1/100) was assessed in L-929 fibroblasts. A broth macrodilution method (MIC and MBC) was used to assess CA antibacterial concentration. The antimicrobial activity of CA solutions was also evaluated after their final rinse inside root canals in previously Enterococcus faecalis-contaminated dentinal tubules. Ten infected dentine samples were rinsed for 5 min with 5% NaOCl and subsequently with 1% citric acid for 3 min. Another 10 were rinsed with 5% NaOCl and 10% citric acid for 3 min; the remaining four specimens were utilized as positive controls. Two uncontaminated specimens were used as negative controls. After LIVE/DEAD BacLight staining, the samples were assessed using CLSM to analyze the percentage of residual live and dead cells. Results: Both undiluted and diluted CA solutions showed severe toxicity; no changes from normal morphology were displayed when diluted 1/100. The MIC and MBC of CA were 6.25 mg/mL and 12.50 mg/mL, respectively. CA solutions demonstrated significantly low levels of bacterial counts than the positive control group, reporting a value of 9.3% for the 10% solution versus the 1% solution (35.2%). Conclusions: Despite its valuable antimicrobial properties, the cytotoxic effects of citric acid should be considered during endodontic treatment.

Abstract
Aim The aim of the study was to compare the sealing ability of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Retroplast as root end filling materials using the Rhodamine B dye penetration method in vitro. Methodology Forty freshly extracted human single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into two groups of 20 teeth each, and standard root-end cavities were prepared in all teeth. The cavities were filled with MTA and Retroplast in groups 1 and 2, respectively. The specimens were then stored in 1% Rhodamine B dye for a week, following which the dye penetration with all samples was analysed under a stereomicroscope and scored according to Tronstad's criteria. The observations were compared with Chi square test at a 0.220 level of significance. Results 5% of the samples in both the groups showed no significant leakage. The leakage was deeper with the Retroplast group than with the MTA group; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion Both MTA and Retroplast are similar in their sealing potential as root-end cavity fillings with Retroplast reporting slightly deeper microleakage than MTA within the limits of the present study.

Wear Analysis of Four Different Single-File Reciprocating Instruments before and after Four Uses in Simulated Root Canals. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the surface alterations of four reciprocating instruments before and after the shaping of four resin-simulated root canals. The following four different reciprocating instruments are selected: 10 Reciproc Blue (RB25), 10 WaveOne Gold (WOG), 10 EdgeOne Fire (EOF) and 10 recently introduced instruments OneRECI (OR), for a total of 40 new instruments. Before root canal shaping, each instrument is mounted on a stub in a standardized position and observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to detect any surface alteration, such as microfractures, metal defects, deformations, blunt and disruption of cutting edges, debris, pitting and tip flattening. Micrographs are acquired at the level of the tip, 4 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm from it. After that, each instrument is used in four simulated resin root canals. SEM observation was repeated after the simulated clinical use to assess the wear resistance of the instruments. Surface alterations are registered before and after instrumentation and statistical analysis is performed using a Chi-Square test to verify homogeneity of defects distribution and GLM to evaluate the differences of RMS at baseline and after use for both groups (α level 0.05). Before simulated clinical uses, no alterations are found except for three cases of EOF with metal strips in correspondence to the tip, disruption of the cutting edge of WOG and oily spotting on two different OR. After simulated clinical use, EOF shows a statistically significant difference in terms of spiral distortion and flattening of the cutting edges. The OR shows the highest presence of debris despite the ultrasonic cleaning procedures. No instrument fractures are observed. EOF should be discarded after four clinical uses and carefully inspected after each insertion into root canals. Moreover, tough attention should be paid during disinfection and cleaning procedures after instrumentation considering the copious debris detected in each instrument, particularly in OR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Since there are no data regarding an instrument recently introduced on the market (OneRECI), the aim of the study was to assess its mechanical and metallurgical properties comparing them with those of widespread reciprocating instruments such as Reciproc, Reciproc Blue, EdgeOne Fire and WaveOne Gold. METHODS A total of 65 NiTi files from five different reciprocating systems (OneRECI, Reciproc, Reciproc Blue, EdgeOne Fire and WaveOne Gold) were evaluated throughout a combined mechanical and metallurgical method. Mechanical performances of the selected file were examined subjecting each specimen to cyclic fatigue, torsional and bending resistance tests, whilst their metallurgical properties were assessed analyzing the nickel-titanium alloy composition and the phase transformation temperatures respectively through an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's was performed with significance level set to a 95% confidence level. RESULTS The EDX showed a similar alloy composition for all of the tested files, with nickel percentage of about 52-53% and a corresponding percentage of titanium of 47-48%, whilst the DSC analysis, although evidenced martensitic characteristics for all files, showed differences in terms of phase transformation temperatures. Overall, OneRECI showed the best mechanical performances in terms of cyclic fatigue and torsional resistance (respectively of 32.95 ± 2.33 s and 0.76 ± 0.03 Ncm) and flexibility (48.4 ± 4.1 g), with statistically significant differences for all tests (p<0.05). Reciproc files showed the worst flexibility and cyclic fatigue resistance, respectively of 157.2 ± 8.3 g and 9.27 ± 1.18 s, whilst the EdgeOne Fire showed the lowest torsional resistance (0.39 ± 0.12 Ncm), whit statistically significant differences (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitation of this study, the recently introduced file OneRECI showed the best mechanical performance in comparison to the tested instruments, with an equiatomic composition of the NiTi alloy and a martensitic behavior.

Abstract
The present study aims to evaluate and contrast the function of the rotational speed of NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files on how resistant they are to dynamic cyclic fatigue. Methods: A total of 150 NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files with similar geometrical design and metallurgical properties were randomly divided into study groups: Group A: 200 rpm (n = 30); Group B: 350 rpm (n = 30); Group C: 500 rpm (n = 30); Group D: reciprocating movement at 350 rpm with 120° counterclockwise and 30° clockwise motion (350 rpm+) (n = 30); and Group E: reciprocating movement at 400 rpm with 120° counterclockwise and 30° clockwise motion (400 rpm+) (n = 30). A dynamic device was designed to carry out dynamic cyclic fatigue tests using artificial root canal systems made from stainless steel with an apical diameter of 250 µm, 5 mm radius of curvature, 60° curvature angle, and 6% taper, and 20 mm in length. A Weibull statistical analysis and ANOVA test were used to analyze the results. Results: The ANOVA analysis showed differences in time to failure among all the study groups that were of statistical significance (p < 0.001). Conclusions: NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files using reciprocating movement at 350 rpm with 120° counterclockwise and 30° clockwise motion exhibit greater resistance to dynamic cyclic fatigue than files used with a reciprocating movement at 400 rpm with 120° counterclockwise and 30° clockwise motion, continuous rotational speed at 200 rpm, continuous rotational speed at 350 rpm, or continuous rotational speed at 500 rpm; it is therefore advisable to use reciprocating movements at a low speed.

Abstract
An in-depth evaluation of the mechanical and metallurgical properties of NiTi instruments is fundamental to assess their performance and to compare recently introduced instrument with widespread ones. According to this, since there are no data on this topic, the aim of the study was to mechanically and metallurgically evaluate an instrument recently introduced into the market (ZenFlex (ZF)), by comparing it with two well-known instruments with similar characteristics: Vortex Blue (VB) and EdgeSequel Sapphire (EES). According to this, 195 instruments were selected: 65 ZF, 65 VB and 65 EES. Each group was divided in subgroups according to the mechanical tests (i.e., cyclic fatigue resistance, torsional resistance and bending ability; (n = 20)) and the metallurgical test (differential scanning calorimetry (n = 5)). A scanning electron microscopy was performed to verify the causes of fracture after mechanical tests (cyclic fatigue and torsional tests). According to results, VB showed the highest flexibility and cyclic fatigue resistance in comparison to the other instruments, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Regarding torsional resistance, EES showed the lowest value of torque at fracture, with a statistically significant difference, whilst the comparison between ZF and VB showed no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). DSC analysis pointed out that VB had the highest austenite start and finish temperatures, followed by ESS and then ZF. ESS sample showed the highest martensite start and finish temperatures followed by VB and ZF. Considering the results, it can be concluded that VB showed the best mechanical performance during static tests in comparison to ESS and ZF. This is fundamentally due to the interaction of parameters such as instrument design and heat-treatments that are able to enhance its mechanical performance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explain the mechanical differences between EdgeTaper Platinum (ETP) and ProTaper Gold (PTG) determining the transition temperatures and the composition of the alloy of ETP, since no data are present in literature. A total of 130 instruments were selected: 65 ETP F2 and 65 PTG F2. 20 instruments per type were submitted to each mechanical tests. The cyclic fatigue and torsional tests were performed at a pre-set temperature of 35 °C ± 1 °C. During the cyclic fatigue test, Time to fracture, number of cycles to fracture (NCF) and the fragment length (FL) were recorded. During the static torsional, Torque to Fracture (TtF) and FL were recorded. The fracture surface of 5 randomly selected fragments from each test was examined through a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and an EDX analysis was performed. 20 instruments per type were submitted to a bending test The force generated (grams) to bend each was recorded. Recorded data of mechanical and metallurgical tests were statistically analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with significance set to a 95% confidence level. ETP F2 showed a higher cyclic fatigue resistance and bending ability than PTG F2, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). PTG showed a higher torsional resistance with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). DSC analysis of 5 samples for each instrument type pointed out that the austenite finish temperature of PTG was higher than the ETP, respectively of 49.99 ± 3.31 (°C) and 38.92 ± 1.75 (°C). EDX analysis confirmed the near-equiatomic composition of the Ni-Ti alloys, with a presence of a third component recognized as rubidium in the ETP samples. ETP showed higher flexibility in comparison with PTG, despite the latter is characterized by a more martensitic characterization. since its Af temperature is higher than the ETP.

Abstract
Endodontic flare-up or post-operative pain occurs when debris such as necrotic pulp tissue, dentin chips, irrigants, and microorganisms are extruded from the apical foramen intraoperatively into the periradicular tissue during root canal instrumentation. This study compared the amount of apical debris extrusion of the root canal dentin layer after using reciprocating and rotary file systems (WaveOne, ProTaper Next and ProTaper Gold). Sixty extracted human maxillary central incisors with one canal and closed apex were included in the study. Samples were randomly and equally divided into three groups (n = 20) according to the file systems used for preparation of the root canal. Teeth in the WO group were instrumented by WaveOne, while the PTN group were instrumented by ProTaper Next, and teeth samples in the PTG group were cleaned and shaped by ProTaper Gold. The mean apically extruded debris weight in grams was estimated using the modified Myers and Montgomery experimental model. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used for the comparison of debris weight in three groups. Post hoc LSD test was applied for pairwise comparison of debris weight. The α value of significance was 0.05. The WO group had significantly lower mean debris weight than the PTN and PTG groups (p = 0.001). Post hoc pairwise comparison revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in mean debris weight between the WO group and PTN group (0.0215 vs. 0.0341, p = 0.001); and the WO group and PTG group (0.0215 vs. 0.0324, p = 0.003). Root canal preparations with different file systems were associated with apical extrusion of the debris from the root canal dentin layer. However, the WaveOne system resulted in a comparatively lower amount of apical debris layer extrusion than the ProTaper Next and ProTaper Gold rotary file systems.

Abstract
Since there are no reviews of the literature on this theme, the aim of this narrative review is to summarize the metallurgical tests used in endodontics, pointing out their functional use and their pros and cons and giving readers a user-friendly guide to serve as an orientation aid in the plethora of metallurgical tests. With this purpose, a literature search for articles published between January 2001 and December 2021 was conducted, using the electronic database PubMed to collect all published articles regarding the metallurgical tests used in endodontics for the evaluation of NiTi rotary instruments. The search was conducted using the following keywords: “metallurgy”, “differential scanning calorimetry” (DSC), “X-ray diffraction” (XRD), “atomic force microscopy” (AFM), “energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy” (EDS), “focused ion beam analysis” (FIB) and “Auger electron spectroscopy” (AES) combined with the term “endodontics” or “NiTi rotary instruments”. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, of the 248 articles found, only 81 were included in the narrative review. According to the results, more than 50% of the selected articles were published in one of the two most relevant journals in endodontics: International Endodontic Journal (22.2%) and Journal of Endodontics (29.6%). The most popular metallurgical test was DSC, with 43 related articles, followed by EDS (33 articles), AFM (22 articles) and XRD (21 articles). Few studies were conducted using other tests such as FIB (2 articles), micro-Raman spectroscopy (4 articles), metallographic analysis (7 articles) and Auger electron spectroscopy (2 articles).

Abstract
Introduction/Objective. of this study is to use SEM analysis to examine
surfaces of new and same sets of Ni-Ti instruments after canal preparations,
to check their susceptibility to corrosion. Methods. In this study, we used
five different endodontic Ni-Ti instruments: K3, Mtwo, ProTaper Universal,
HyFlex and BioRaCe. Instruments were analyzed before and after preparation
of canals of different curvature, using SEM (150-2000X). Results. Corrosion
of the working part was observed in 5.5% of new Ni-Ti instruments of the K3
system (apical and middle segment), in 5.5% of Mtwo instruments (apical
third) and in 11.1% of ProTaper Universal systems (apical and middle third).
Corrosion was not observed on the new instruments of the HyFlex and BioRaCe
kits. After instrumentation, disinfection and sterilization, corrosion was
observed in all sets of K3 and ProTaper Universal systems and in all HyFlex
instruments of the first group. Corrosion was observed in the HyFlex system
in the second group in 16.7% of instruments (apical and middle third) and in
the third 83.3% in the apical and 66.7% in the middle segment. In the Mtwo
set, corrosion was observed in 16.7% of instruments in the first (apical and
middle third), in the second group in 33.3% of instruments in the apical
part and 50% in the middle third, while in the third group, corrosion was
observed in 16.7% of instruments in the middle third of instruments.
Conclusion. Rotary Ni-Ti instruments K3 and ProTaper Universal are
susceptible to corrosion in a very high percentage. Ni-Ti systems with
post-heat treatment of the working part (HyFlex) are somewhat more resistant
to corrosion, while in Ni-Ti systems with electropolished surface (BioRaCe),
corrosion is not observed.
