Abstract
The fruit extract of Opuntia stricta var. dillenii (OSDE) has been recognized for its effects on hepatic steatosis, but the compounds responsible for this activity have yet to be precisely identified. This work aimed to evaluate the anti-steatotic effect of OSDE and its different fractions obtained by fast centrifugal-partition chromatography (FCPC) to identify the compounds potentially responsible for this biological activity. Hepatic lipid accumulation and triglyceride content were evaluated, as well as cellular antioxidant activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Pool 1-Pool 4 showed lower lipid accumulation than OSDE in liver cells, while a greater reduction in triglyceride levels, even lower than OSDE and lovastatin (LOV), was observed for Pool 1, 9, and 10. Compared to OSDE, Pools 1,6, 7, and 12 showed higher cellular antioxidant effects, whereas OSDE showed better lipid peroxidation inhibition than all of Pools. Quinic and piscidic acids were the main bioactive present in Pool 1, exhibiting +1597 % and + 997 % increases in their content related to OSDE, respectively. Likewise, the most abundant compounds in Pool 2- Pool 4 were betalains such as betanin and isobetanin, with +163 % and + 162 % of increases in their concentration related to OSDE, respectively. Antioxidant effects in Pools 6 and 7 correlated with higher phenolic acid concentration. OSDE significantly reduced triglyceride levels in a steatotic-induced model. Although OSDE showed anti-steatotic effects, they were more pronounced for some of its constituents in FCPC Pools. Results suggested that these compounds might be potentially responsible for this anti-steatotic effect. FCPC fractionation facilitated the separate biological evaluation of OSDE constituents and thus identified them. Future studies should focus on validating these anti-steatotic effects in in vivo models.

Abstract
Low molecular weight (LMW) thiols, particularly glutathione, play pathogenic roles in various multiorgan diseases. The liver is central for the production and systemic distribution of LMW thiols; thus, it is particularly susceptible to the imbalance of redox status that may determine increased oxidative stress and trigger the liver damage observed in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) models and humans. Indeed, increased LMW thiols at the cellular and extracellular levels may be associated with the severity of MASLD. Here, we present a systematic literature review of recent studies assessing the levels of LMW thiols in MASLD in in vivo and in vitro models and human subjects. Based on the PRISMA 2020 criteria, a search was conducted using PubMed and Scopus by applying inclusion/exclusion filters. The initial search returned 1012 documents, from which 165 eligible studies were selected, further described, and qualitatively analysed. Of these studies, most focused on animal and cellular models, while a minority used human fluids. The analysis of these studies revealed heterogeneity in the methods of sample processing and measurement of LMW thiol levels, which hinder cut-off values for diagnostic use. Standardisation of the analysis and measure of LMW thiol is necessary to facilitate future studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the beneficial effects of Lactobacillus reuteri TISTR 2736 on glucose homeostasis, carbohydrate metabolism, and the underlying mechanisms of its actions in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rats. METHODS A rat model of T2D was established by a combination of a high-fat diet and streptozotocin. The diabetic rats were treated daily with L. reuteri TISTR 2736 (2 × 108 CFU/day) for 30 days. Biochemical, histopathological, and molecular analyses were carried out to determine insulin signaling, carbohydrate metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation. RESULTS The results demonstrated that treatment with L. reuteri TISTR 2736 significantly ameliorated fasting blood glucose and glucose intolerance, and improved insulin sensitivity indices in the diabetic rats. The hepatic histopathology was improved with L. reuteri TISTR 2736 treatment, which was correlated with a reduction of hepatic lipid profiles. L. reuteri TISTR 2736 significantly reduced glycogen content, fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase activity, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 protein expression, and enhanced hexokinase activity in the diabetic liver. The downregulation of IRS1 and phosphorylated IRS1Ser307 and upregulation of PI3K and phosphorylated AKTSer473 proteins in the liver were found in the L. reuteri TISTR 2736-treated diabetic group. Furthermore, it was able to suppress oxidative stress and inflammation in the diabetic rats, as demonstrated by decreased malondialdehyde and protein levels of NF-κB, IL-6 and TNF-α, but increased antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. CONCLUSION By inhibiting oxidative and inflammatory stress, L. reuteri TISTR 2736 alleviated hyperglycemia and improved carbohydrate metabolism through activating IRS1/PI3K/AKT pathway in the T2D rats.

Abstract
Objective: This study elucidated the mechanistic role of Cyathulae Radix (CR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) through bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation. Methods: Components and targets of CR were retrieved from the traditional Chinese medical systems pharmacology, while potential T2DM targets were obtained from GeneCards and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man databases. Intersecting these datasets yielded target genes between CR and T2DM. Differential genes were used for constructing a protein-protein interaction network, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations were performed using AutoDock and GROMACS, respectively, and in vitro experiments validated the results. Experiments evaluated the effect of CR on T2DM pancreatic β-cells. Results: Bioinformatics analysis identified four active compounds of CR, 157 related genes, and 5431 T2DM target genes, with 141 shared targets. Key targets such as JUN, MAPK1, and MAPK14 were identified through topological analysis of the PPI network. GO analysis presented 2663 entries, while KEGG analysis identified 161 pathways. The molecular docking results demonstrated favorable binding energy between the core components and the core proteins. Among them, JUN-rubrosterone, MAPK1-rubrosterone, and MAPK14-rubrosterone deserved further investigation. Molecular dynamics results indicated that all of them can form stable binding interactions. CR could inhibit the expression of JUN, MAPK1, and MAPK14, promote insulin secretion, alleviate apoptosis, and regulate autophagy in INS-1 cells. Conclusion: This study suggests CR approach to T2DM management by multitarget and multipathway provides a scientific basis for further research on the hypoglycemic effect of CR.

Abstract
Beta vulgaris L. is a root vegetable that is consumed mainly as a food additive. This study aimed to describe the protective effect of B. vulgaris on Fe2+-mediated oxidative liver damage through in vitro, ex vivo, and in silico studies to establish a strong rationale for its protective effect. To induce oxidative damage, we incubated the livers of healthy male rats with 0.1 mM FeSO4 to induce oxidative injury and coincubated them with an aqueous extract of B. vulgaris root (BVFE) (15-240 µg/mL). Induction of liver damage significantly (p < .05) decreased the levels of GSH, SOD, CAT, and ENTPDase activities, with a corresponding increase in MDA and NO levels and Na+/K+ ATPase, G6 Pase, and F-1,6-BPase enzyme activities. BVFE treatment (p < .05) reduced these levels and activities to almost normal levels, with the most prominent effects observed at 240 µg/mL BVFE. An HPLC investigation revealed sixteen compounds in BVFE, with quercetin being the most abundant. Chlorogenic acid and iso-orientation showed the highest binding affinities for G6 Pase and Na+/K + ATPase, respectively. These findings suggest that B. vulgaris can protect against Fe2+-mediated liver damage by suppressing oxidative stress and cholinergic and purinergic activities while regulating gluconeogenesis. Overall, the hepatoprotective activity of this extract might be driven by the synergistic effect of the identified compounds and their probable interactions with target proteins.

Abstract
This study investigated the beneficial effects of probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis TISTR 2591 on the regulation of blood glucose and its possible mechanisms in a rat model of type 2 diabetes. The type 2 diabetic-Sprague Dawley rats were established by the combination of a high-fat diet and a low dose of streptozotocin. After 4 weeks of treatment with 2 × 108 CFU/ml of B. animalis TISTR 2591, fasting blood glucose (FBG), oral glucose tolerance, serum insulin, and pancreatic and hepatic histopathology were determined. Liver lipid accumulation, glycogen content, and gluconeogenic protein expression were evaluated. Oxidative stress and inflammatory status were determined. B. animalis TISTR 2591 significantly reduced FBG levels and improved glucose tolerance and serum insulin in the diabetic rats. Structural damage of the pancreas and liver was ameliorated in the B. animalis TISTR 2591-treated diabetic rats. In addition, significant decreases in hepatic fat accumulation, glycogen content, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase-1 protein expression were found in the diabetic rats treated with B. animalis TISTR 2591. The diabetic rats showed a significant reduction of inflammation following B. animalis TISTR 2591 supplementation, as demonstrated by decreasing hepatic NF-κB protein expression and serum and liver TNF-α levels. The B. animalis TISTR 2591 significantly decreased MDA levels and increased antioxidant SOD and GPx activities in the diabetic rats. In conclusion, B. animalis TISTR 2591 was shown to be effective in controlling glucose homeostasis and improving glucose tolerance in the diabetic rats. These beneficial activities were attributed to reducing oxidative and inflammatory status and modulating hepatic glucose metabolism.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Low-glycemic diets are crucial, particularly for individuals with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Therefore, observing the impact of multiple forms of red beetroot-based products on the glycemic profiles of humans under various health conditions has arguably become significant due to beetroot's high fiber content, antioxidants, inorganic nitrates, etc., which this review aims to summarize. RECENT FINDINGS The relevant articles published between 2000 and 2022 were obtained from PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect by following the PRISMA-P 2020 statement. This systematic review included 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one non-randomized clinical trial (non-RCT), and one quasi-experimental (QE) study, and they covered different health conditions, e.g., type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, hypertension, etc. The studies produced conflicting results, likely due to differences in the study design, dosage, duration, and population. The risk of bias in most of the RCTs and QE studies included in the review was assessed as low or moderate, and only one non-RCT was assessed as having a high risk of bias. Red beetroot may help maintain the blood sugar levels of humans under different health conditions. However, the existing results on beetroot's potential for glycemic management are unclear due to varied outcomes across studies. Further intervention studies with standardized protocols and diverse participant groups are necessary to assess the role of beetroot products in regulating blood sugar levels before making a definitive judgment.

Abstract
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exerts a severe toll on human health and the economy, with high prevalence and mortality rates. The search for bioactive components effective in the treatment of COPD has become a focal point of research. Beetroot juice, readily accessible and cost-effective, is noted for its ability to enhance athletic performance and for its preventive and therapeutic impact on hypertension. Beetroot juice is a rich source of dietary nitrates and modulates physiological processes via the nitrate-nitrite- nitric oxide pathway, exerting multiple beneficial effects such as antihypertensive, bronchodilatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and lipid-lowering actions. This paper provides a review of the existing research on the effects of beetroot juice on COPD, summarizing its potential in enhancing exercise capacity, lowering blood pressure, improving vascular function, and ameliorating sleep quality among patients with COPD. The review serves as a reference for the prospective use of beetroot juice in the symptomatic improvement of COPD, as well as in the prevention of exacerbations and associated comorbidities.

Abstract
Regardless of etiology, hepatocarcinogenesis is frequently preceded by a distinctive sequence of chronic necroinflammation, compensatory hepatic regeneration, development of hepatic fibrosis, and ultimately cirrhosis. The liver being central immunomodulators, closely maintains immunotolerance. Any dysregulation in this management of immunotolerance is a hallmark of chronic hepatic disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Apart from other malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma accounts for 90% of liver cancers. Several emerging evidences have recognized diet as lifestyle associated risk factor in HCC development. However, natural compounds have the potential to fight hepatoma aggressiveness via inhibition of cellular proliferation and modulation of oncogenic pathways. This review aimed to identify the several plant-based foods for their protective role in HCC prevention by understating the molecular mechanisms involved in inhibition of progression and proliferation of cancer. Information from relevant publications in which several plant-based foods demonstrated protective potential against HCC has been integrated as well as evaluated. For data integration, Science direct, Google scholar, and Scopus websites were used. Nutrition-based approaches in the deterrence of several cancers offer a substantial benefit to currently used medical therapies and should be implemented more often as an adjunct to first-line medical therapy. Furthermore, the inclusion of these plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices) may improve general health and decline cancer incidence.

Abstract
Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of muscle wasting/atrophy, which adversely affects quality of life. We hypothesized that long term supplementation of fish oil may have protective effects against sarcopenia or muscle atrophy in streptozotocin (STZ) and high-fat (HF) diet-induced diabetic rat model. Wistar rats at age of 7 weeks were injected with saline or STZ to induce hyperglycemia. After one week, they were fed on a normal control diet or HF diet with/without supplementation of fish oil for 18 weeks. Feeding diabetic rats with a fish oil-enriched diet alleviated body weight loss and the impaired glucose tolerance using OGTT test. Although fish oil did not improve the decreased muscle mass, the muscle atrophy induced by diabetes was attenuated by fish oil in gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis anterior, and extensor digitorum longus muscles. Fish oil supplementation reversed the decreased expression of phospho (p)-AKT, pmTOR, and p-p70s6k, which are molecules related to protein synthesis. Besides, protein degradation-related signaling pathways were inhibited by fish oil, such as increasing p-FoxO1 and decreasing Atrogin-1 and MURF1 protein expression. Fish oil down-regulated the expression of autophagy-related molecules including ATG5, p62, and LC3B II/I ratio, which may result in less muscle atrophy. Inflammation-related signaling regulators including TNF-α, NF-κB, AGEs, and RAGE were suppressed by fish oil supplementation as well. Moreover, the down-regulated p-AMPKα, SIRT1, and PGC-1 in diabetic rats were counteracted by fish oil, which may improve mitochondrial function and further block FoxO action. These data suggest that long-term fish oil supplementation exerts protective effects against diabetes-induced muscle atrophy, which may in turn ameliorate insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance.

Abstract
Recently, red beetroot has attracted attention as a health-promoting functional food. Studies have shown that beetroot administration can reduce blood pressure and ameliorate parameters of glucose and lipid metabolism; however, mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects of beetroot are not yet fully understood. In the current study, we analysed the effects of beetroot on parameters of glucose and lipid metabolism in two models of metabolic syndrome: (i) transgenic spontaneously hypertensive rats expressing human C-reactive protein (SHR-CRP rats), and (ii) hereditary hypertriglyceridemic (HHTg) rats. Treatment with beetroot juice for 4 weeks was, in both models, associated with amelioration of oxidative stress, reduced circulating lipids, smaller visceral fat depots, and lower ectopic fat accumulation in the liver compared to the respective untreated controls. On the other hand, beetroot treatment had no significant effects on the sensitivity of the muscle and adipose tissue to insulin action in either model. Analyses of hepatic proteome revealed significantly deregulated proteins involved in glycerophospholipid metabolism, mTOR signalling, inflammation, and cytoskeleton rearrangement.

Abstract
Beta vulgaris, also known as Beetroot, is a member of a family of Chenopodiaceae and is widely used as a natural food colorant. It gets its distinctive color due to nitrogen-containing water-soluble pigments betalains. Beetroot is an exquisite cradle of nutrients, including proteins, sucrose, carbohydrates, vitamins (B complex and vitamin C), minerals, fiber. They also contain an appreciable amount of phenolic compounds and antioxidants such as coumarins, carotenoids, sesquiterpenoids, triterpenes, flavonoids (astragalin, tiliroside, rhamnocitrin, kaempferol, rhamnetin). Recent studies evidenced that beetroot consumption had favorable physiological benefits, leading to improved cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, hepatic steatosis, liver damage, etc. This review gives insights into developing beetroot as a potential and novel ingredient for versatile food applications and the latest research conducted worldwide. The phytochemical diversity of beetroot makes them potential sources of nutraceutical compounds from which functional foods can be obtained. The article aimed to comprehensively collate some of the vital information published on beetroot incurred in the agri-food sector and a comprehensive review detailing the potentiality of tapping bioactive compounds in the entire agriculture-based food sector.

Abstract
Obesity is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases and is interlinked with incidences of various diseases. By modulating lifestyle and food quality, obesity can be preventable. The present study investigated the ability of a novel functional beverage based on orange juice and beetroot leaf and stem juice in preventing obesity-associated health issues. To achieve this purpose, we determined the nutritive value of juices and tested their ability to prevent the effect of a high-fat diet on a rat model. Adding leaf and stem juice to orange juice increased the total soluble solids/total titratable acidity ratio, which reflects the high acceptability of the blends, and enhanced their nutritive value. All minerals increased in the blends by increasing the leaf and stem juice percentage. Copper was detected only in the juices containing 10–20% leaf and stem juice (0.01–0.11 mg/100 g). Total flavonoids and betalain increased in the blends, reaching 142.02 µg/mL and 1680 µg/mL, respectively. The mixing process synergized the blends’ radicals scavenging activity. The synergic antioxidant effect of orange enriched with 20% leaf and stem juice attenuated the oxidative stress induced by the high-fat diet by recovering catalase and glutathione peroxidase values. It also enhanced liver enzymes and lipid profile. Consequently, enriching orange with leaf and stem juice results in a functional and nutritious beverage that protects against obesity and its associated health issues.
