Abstract
Increasing canopy relative air humidity (RH) facilitates the resistance of flowering Chinese cabbage plants against excessive light exposure in a plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL), thereby completely inhibiting leaf burn occurrence. To clarify this high RH-mediated resistance mechanism, we further analyzed the transcriptomes, gas exchange parameters, and chlorophyll fluorescence of flowering Chinese cabbage plants subjected to two levels of canopy RH (70% and 90%). Transcriptomic data revealed a significant enrichment of photosynthesis antenna proteins pathway, which was notably downregulated in both the cotyledons and the first true leaves of the plants grown at 70% RH from the 10th to the 14th day after sowing. However, the downregulation of the photosynthesis-antenna proteins pathway in the first true leaves was notably attenuated by increasing the RH from 70% to 90%, consequently inhibiting the down-regulated expression of all light-harvesting complex I- and II-subunit-encoding mRNAs. The 70% RH-treated seedlings exhibited serious photoinhibition, as indicated by relatively lower non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), maximal quantum yield of photosystem I and II, and adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus to high irradiance. The 90% RH treatment greatly lessened the reduction of NPQ and relative electron transport rates, which favored dissipating the excess excited energy, protected the photosynthetic apparatus against photodamage, and ultimately completely inhibited leaf burn occurrence. Overall, our results indicate that high canopy RH could improve the resistance of plants to intense light by maintaining efficient photosynthesis, thereby minimizing reliance on supplemental artificial lighting.

Abstract
Despite progress in reducing global hunger, micronutrient deficiencies and imbalanced diets linked to urbanization remain pressing health threats. Protected cultivation offers a promising avenue for sustainable intensification of vegetable production. Additionally, indoor and vertical farming have recently emerged as cutting-edge strategies, particularly in densely populated urban areas and mega-cities. However, research has focused on maximizing yield, neglecting the impact of pre-harvest conditions on produce quality. Here, we explore strategies for manipulating environmental factors within protected cultivation systems to enhance vegetable nutritional value. Research suggests moderate stress can positively influence nutrient composition while plants exhibit stage-specific metabolic responses to environmental factors. For instance, seedlings thrive under a higher blue-to-red ratio, while green light benefits leafy vegetables. Additionally, increased blue light or supplemental UV-A benefits flowering and fruiting vegetables. When other environmental factors are optimal, light intensity significantly impacts vegetable nutritional quality, followed by CO2 levels, light spectrum, temperature, and humidity. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms, the complex interplay of environmental factors, and their interaction with genetic material and cultural practices on nutritional quality.

Abstract
Crop production using greenhouse technology has become increasingly essential for intensifying agricultural output, particularly in regions with challenging climatic conditions. More so, greenhouses do not only support continuous crop supply but also provide a controlled environment crucial for studying plant-pathogen interaction. Likewise, pests and diseases are a constant threat to crop production, which requires innovative control methods. Providing a suitable and sustainable control method requires a detailed probe into the relationship between plants and biotic disturbance under controlled settings. Therefore this review explores the relationships between plants and pathogens, highlighting the impact of extreme greenhouse microclimates on plant pathology assays. Given the extreme weather conditions in the Arabian peninsula, the efficiency of greenhouses, especially during summer, is compromised without adequate cooling systems. This review discusses the current strategies employed to optimize greenhouse conditions in hot arid regions, aiming to enhance plant health by mitigating pathogen activity while minimizing energy, and water consumption. The review also provides an overview of how microclimatic parameters within greenhouses influence plant-pathogen dynamics, ensuring conditions that are conducive to managing both biotic and abiotic diseases. Additionally, the review aims to evaluate various cooling techniques available and most widely accepted in hot arid regions. Moreover, the performance indicators, principles, and effectiveness of each technique are discussed. Promising advances in the manipulations and combination of these techniques have proven to maintain an appropriate greenhouse microclimate with minimal resource use.

This article examines various analytical techniques, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and capillary electrophoresis (CE), while highlighting their respective advantages and limitations. Additionally, this review delves into recent advancements in sample preparation, extraction, and quantification methods, offering valuable insights into the accurate and efficient determination of glucosinolate content across diverse plant materials. Furthermore, it underscores the critical importance of the standardization and validation of these methodologies to ensure reliable glucosinolate analyses in both scientific research and industrial applications.

Abstract
Inorganic luminescent materials hold great promise for optoelectronic device applications, yet the limited efficiency and poor thermal stability of oxide-based deep-red emitting phosphors hinder the advancement of plant lighting technologies. Herein, a simple compositional engineering strategy is proposed to stabilize the phase, boost external quantum efficiency (EQE) and enhance thermal stability. The chemical modification of the PO4 tetrahedron in NaMgPO4:Eu by incorporating SiO4 lowers the formation energy, leading to the generation of pure olivine phase and increasing the EQE from 27% to 52%, setting a record for oxide deep-red phosphors. In parallel, the introduced deep defect level improves thermal stability at 150 °C from 62.5% to 85.4%. Besides, the excitation and emission peaks shifted to 440 nm and 675 nm, respectively, aligning precisely with the specific spectral absorption requirements of plant phytochromes. Moreover, the luminescent intensity showed nearly no decay after being exposed to 80% relative humidity and 80 oC for 6 h, and the pc-LED utilizing Na1.06MgP0.94Si0.06O4:Eu achieves a high output power of 780 mW at 300 mA. Our research demonstrates a facile method for optimizing the performance of inorganic luminescent materials and provides alternative solutions for low-cost plant lighting.

Abstract
Climate change causes shifts in temperature patterns, and plants adapt their chemical content in order to survive. We compared the effect of low (LT) and high (HT) growing temperatures on the phytochemical content of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis (L.) Alef. var. cymosa Duch.) microgreens and the bioactivity of their extracts. Using different spectrophotometric, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, and statistical methods, we found that LT increased the total phenolics and tannins in broccoli. The total glucosinolates were also increased by LT; however, they were decreased by HT. Soluble sugars, known osmoprotectants, were increased by both types of stress, considerably more by HT than LT, suggesting that HT causes a more intense osmotic imbalance. Both temperatures were detrimental for chlorophyll, with HT being more impactful than LT. HT increased hormone indole-3-acetic acid, implying an important role in broccoli's defense. Ferulic and sinapic acid showed a trade-off scheme: HT increased ferulic while LT increased sinapic acid. Both stresses decreased the potential of broccoli to act against H2O2 damage in mouse embryonal fibroblasts (MEF), human keratinocytes, and liver cancer cells. Among the tested cell types treated by H2O2, the most significant reduction in ROS (36.61%) was recorded in MEF cells treated with RT extracts. The potential of broccoli extracts to inhibit α-amylase increased following both temperature stresses; however, the inhibition of pancreatic lipase was increased by LT only. From the perspective of nutritional value, and based on the obtained results, we conclude that LT conditions result in more nutritious broccoli microgreens than HT.

Abstract
The tomato as a raw material for processing is globally important and is pivotal in dietary and agronomic research due to its nutritional, economic, and health significance. This study explored the potential of machine learning (ML) for predicting tomato quality, utilizing data from 48 cultivars and 28 locations in Hungary over 5 seasons. It focused on °Brix, lycopene content, and colour (a/b ratio) using extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and artificial neural network (ANN) models. The results revealed that XGBoost consistently outperformed ANN, achieving high accuracy in predicting °Brix (R² = 0.98, RMSE = 0.07) and lycopene content (R² = 0.87, RMSE = 0.61), and excelling in colour prediction (a/b ratio) with a R² of 0.93 and RMSE of 0.03. ANN lagged behind particularly in colour prediction, showing a negative R² value of -0.35. Shapley additive explanation's (SHAP) summary plot analysis indicated that both models are effective in predicting °Brix and lycopene content in tomatoes, highlighting different aspects of the data. SHAP analysis highlighted the models' efficiency (especially in °Brix and lycopene predictions) and underscored the significant influence of cultivar choice and environmental factors like climate and soil. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting and fine-tuning the appropriate ML model for enhancing precision agriculture, underlining XGBoost's superiority in handling complex agronomic data for quality assessment.

Abstract
Climate change has universally affected the whole ecosystem in a unified manner and is known to have improbable effects on agricultural productivity and food security. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature are the major environmental factors that have been shown to increase sharply during the last century and are directly responsible for affecting plant growth and development. A number of previous investigations have deliberated the positive effects of elevated CO2 on plant growth and development of various C3 crops, while detrimental effects of enhanced temperature on different crop plants like rice, wheat, maize and legumes are generally observed. A combined effect of elevated CO2 and temperature has yet to be studied in great detail; therefore, this review attempts to delineate the interactive effects of enhanced CO2 and temperature on plant growth, development, physiological and molecular responses. Elevated CO2 maintains leaf photosynthesis rate, respiration, transpiration and stomatal conductance in the presence of elevated temperature and sustains plant growth and productivity in the presence of both these environmental factors. Concomitantly, their interaction also affects the nutritional quality of seeds and leads to alterations in the composition of secondary metabolites. Elevated CO2 and temperature modulate phytohormone concentration in plants, and due to this fact, both environmental factors have substantial effects on abiotic and biotic stresses. Elevated CO2 and temperature have been shown to have mitigating effects on plants in the presence of other abiotic stress agents like drought and salinity, while no such pattern has been observed in the presence of biotic stress agents. This review focuses on the interactive effects of enhanced CO2 and temperature on different plants and is the first of its kind to deliver their combined responses in such detail.

Abstract
Plant factory is an important field of practice in smart agriculture which uses highly sophisticated equipment for precision regulation of the environment to ensure crop growth and development efficiently. Environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, significantly impact crop production in a plant factory. Given the inherent complexities of dynamic models associated with plant factory environments, including strong coupling, strong nonlinearity and multi-disturbances, a nonlinear adaptive decoupling control approach utilizing a high-order neural network is proposed which consists of a linear decoupling controller, a nonlinear decoupling controller and a switching function. In this paper, the parameters of the controller depend on the generalized minimum variance control rate, and an adaptive algorithm is presented to deal with uncertainties in the system. In addition, a high-order neural network is utilized to estimate the unmolded nonlinear terms, consequently mitigating the impact of nonlinearity on the system. The simulation results show that the mean error and standard error of the traditional controller for temperature control are 0.3615 and 0.8425, respectively. In contrast, the proposed control strategy has made significant improvements in both indicators, with results of 0.1655 and 0.6665, respectively. For humidity control, the mean error and standard error of the traditional controller are 0.1475 and 0.441, respectively. In comparison, the proposed control strategy has greatly improved on both indicators, with results of 0.0221 and 0.1541, respectively. The above results indicate that even under complex conditions, the proposed control strategy is capable of enabling the system to quickly track set values and enhance control performance. Overall, precise temperature and humidity control in plant factories and smart agriculture can enhance production efficiency, product quality and resource utilization.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a common characteristic of psychiatric, neurological, and neurodegenerative disorders. Therefore, compounds that are neuroprotective and reduce oxidative stress may be of interest as novel therapeutics. Phenolic, flavonoid and anthocyanin content, ORAC and DPPH free radical scavenging, and Cu2+ and Fe2+ chelating capacities were examined in variations (fresh/capsule) of Queen Garnet plum (QGP, Prunus salicina), black pepper (Piper nigrum) clove (Syzygium aromaticum), elderberry (Sambucus nigra), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and sage (Salvia officinalis), plus two blends (Astralagus membranaceus-lemon balm-rich, WC and R8). The ability of samples to prevent and treat H2O2-induced oxidative stress in SH-SY5Y cells was investigated. Pre-treatment with WC, elderberry, QGP, and clove prevented the oxidative stress-induced reduction in cell viability, demonstrating a neuroprotective effect. Elderberry increased cell viability following oxidative stress induction, demonstrating treatment effects. Clove had the highest phenolic and flavonoid content, DPPH, and Cu2+ chelating capacities, whereas QGP and elderberry were highest in anthocyanins. Black pepper had the highest ORAC and Fe2+ chelating capacity. These findings demonstrate that plant extracts can prevent and treat oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of neuron-like cells in vitro. Further research into phytochemicals as novel therapeutics for oxidative stress in the brain is needed.

Abstract
The frequency and intensity of climate change and resulting impacts are more prevalent in South Asian countries, particularly in Bangladesh. Relative humidity (RH) is a crucial aspect of climate, and higher RH variability has far-reaching impacts on human health, agriculture, environment, and infrastructure. While temperature and rainfall have gained much research attention, RH studies have received scant attention in the research literature. This study investigated the trends and variability of RH levels in Bangladesh and the influence of other meteorological factors over the past 40 years. Variabilities in the meteorological factors were identified by calculating descriptive statistics. Innovative trend analysis (ITA) and Mann-Kendall test (MK-test) methods were utilized to assess monthly, seasonal, and annual trends. The magnitude of temperature, rainfall, and windspeed influences on RH variability were identified using Pearson's correlation, Spearman rank correlation, and Kendall correlation model. Variability analysis showed higher spatial variations in RH levels across the country, and RH skewed negatively in all stations. Results reveal that daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual trends of RH exhibited positive trends in all stations, with an increasing rate of 0.083-0.53% per year in summer, 0.43-0.68% per year in winter, and 0.58-0.31% per year in the rainy season. Both ITA and MK-test provided consistent results, indicating no discrepancies in trend results. All three models indicate that temperature, rainfall, and windspeed have weak to moderate positive influences on changing RH levels in Bangladesh. The study will contribute to decision-making to improve crop yields, health outcomes, and infrastructure efficiency.

Abstract
The global production of plant-based foods is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Indoor vertical farms (IVFs) have emerged as a promising approach to urban agriculture. However, their environmental performance is not well understood, particularly in relation to operational choices where global warming potentials (GWP) can vary between 0.01-54 kg CO2e/kg-1 of leafy greens produced. We conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a building-integrated IVF for microgreen production to analyse a range of operational conditions for cultivation: air temperature, CO2 concentration, and photoperiod. We analyzed a dynamic LCA inventory that combined a process-based plant growth model and a mass balance model for air and heat exchange between the chamber and the outside. Results showed that the GWP of IVFs can vary greatly depending on the operation conditions set, ranging from 3.3 to 63.3 kg CO2e/kg-1. The optimal conditions for minimizing GWP were identified as 20 ℃, maximum CO2 concentration in the chamber, and maximum photoperiod, which led to a minimum GWP of 3.3 kg CO2e/kg-1 and maximum production of 290.5 kg fresh weight week-1. Intensification of production thus led to lower impacts because the marginal increase in yield due to increased resource use was larger than the marginal increase in impact. Therefore, adjusting growing conditions is essential for the sustainability of urban food production.

Abstract
Capparis spinosa L. (C. spinosa) is an edible plant with health-promoting benefits. C. spinosa possesses various biological activities, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, antibacterial, and insecticidal effects. The active compounds associated with these effects mainly include flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, volatile oils, fatty acids, and polysaccharides. Moreover, C. spinosa has considerable nutritional value. Apart from being a food condiment, it belongs to a class of functional ingredients that act as preservatives and antioxidants in food products. C. spinosa has also shown good potential applications in novel food packaging materials. In this article, in addition to systematically reviewing the botanical characteristics, traditional edible uses, phytochemical composition, bioactivities and safety of C. spinosa, we highlight for the first time its potential applications in the foods. The findings will provide critical information for the future development of C. spinosa into a multifunctional food product with essential roles in health benefits.

Abstract
This paper reports on the findings of an experimental study that investigated the impact of various environmental factors on the growth of lettuce and basil plants in vertical farms. The study employed the Taguchi method, a statistical design of experiments approach, to efficiently identify the optimal growth conditions for these crops in a hyper-controlled environment. By reducing the time and cost of designing and running experiments, this method allowed for the simultaneous investigation of multiple environmental factors that affect plant growth. A total of 27 treatments were selected using the Taguchi approach, and the signal to noise ratio was calculated to predict the optimal levels of each environmental condition for maximizing basil and lettuce growth parameters. The results showed that most of the parameters, except for EC and relative humidity for certain growth parameters, were interrelated with each other. To validate the results, confirmation tests were conducted based on the predicted optimal parameters. The low error ratio between expected and predicted values (1-3%) confirmed the effectiveness of the Taguchi approach for determining the optimal environmental conditions for plant growth in vertical farms.

Abstract
Azole fungicides is one of the major fungicides in agricultural field. In this study, toxic effects of diniconazole (DIN), metconazole (MET), and tebuconazole (TEB) to radish leaves and roots were investigated using targeted metabolomics with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Especially, the changes of functional chemicals, including phytosterols and glucosinolates evaluated. Radish leaves and roots were harvested after 7 days and 14 days from last exposure. In multivariate analysis, the experimental groups showed clear separation in PCA and PLS-DA score plots. Phytosterols and glucosinolates were significantly changed by azole fungicide. Six metabolic pathways which are affected by fungicides were selected and showed similar patterns regardless of the type of azole fungicide used. As a result, azole fungicide induces the defense mechanisms of plants and affects both primary and secondary metabolism.

Abstract
Cruciferous vegetables and oilseeds are rich in glucosinolates that can transform into isothiocyanates upon enzymic hydrolysis during post-harvest handling, food preparation and/or digestion. Vegetables contain glucosinolates that have beneficial bioactivities, while glucosinolates in oilseeds might have anti-nutritional properties. It is therefore important to monitor and assess glucosinolates and isothiocyanates content through the food value chain as well as for optimized crop production. Vibrational spectroscopy methods, such as infrared (IR) spectroscopy, are used as a nondestructive, rapid and low-cost alternative to the current and common costly, destructive, and time-consuming techniques. This systematic review discusses and evaluates the recent literature available on the use of IR spectroscopy to determine glucosinolates and isothiocyanates in vegetables and oilseeds. NIR spectroscopy was used to predict glucosinolates in broccoli, kale, rocket, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, brown mustard, rapeseed, pennycress, and a combination of Brassicaceae family seeds. Only one study reported the use of NIR spectroscopy to predict broccoli isothiocyanates. The major limitations of these studies were the absence of the critical evaluation of errors associated with the reference method used to develop the calibration models and the lack of interpretation of loadings or regression coefficients used to predict glucosinolates.

Abstract
Metallothioneins (MTs) are polypeptide-encoded genes involved in plant growth, development, seed formation, and diverse stress response. High temperature and humidity stress (HTH) reduce seed development and maturity of the field-grown soybean, which also leads to seed pre-harvest deterioration. However, the function of MTs in higher plants is still largely unknown. Herein, we isolated and characterized the soybean metallothionein II gene. The full-length fragment is 255 bp and encodes 85 amino acids and contains the HD domain and the N-terminal non-conservative region. The subcellular location of the GmMT-II-GFP fusion protein was clearly located in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane. The highest expression of the GmMT-II gene was observed in seeds both of the soybean Xiangdou No. 3 and Ningzhen No. 1 cultivars, as compared to other plant tissues. Similarly, gene expression was higher 45 days after flowering followed by 30, 40, and 35 days. Furthermore, the GmMT-II transcript levels were significantly higher at 96 and 12 h in the cultivars Xiangdou No. 3 and Ningzhen No. 1 under HTH stress, respectively. In addition, it was found that when the Gm1-MMP protein was deleted, the GmMT-II could bind to the propeptide region of the Gm1-MMP, but not to the signal peptide region or the catalytic region. GmMT-II overexpression in transgenic Arabidopsis increased seed germination and germination rate under HTH conditions, conferring enhanced resistance to HTH stress. GmMT-II overexpressing plants suffered less oxidative damage under HTH stress, as reflected by lower MDA and H2O2 content and ROS production than WT plants. In addition, the activity of antioxidant enzymes namely SOD, CAT, and POD was significantly higher in all transgenic Arabidopsis lines under HTH stress compared wild-tpye plants. Our results suggested that GmMT-II is related to growth and development and confers enhanced HTH stress tolerance in plants by reduction of oxidative molecules through activation of antioxidant activities. These findings will be helpful for us in further understanding of the biological functions of MT-II in plants.

Cruciferous vegetable crops are grown widely around the world, which supply a multitude of health-related micronutrients, phytochemicals, and antioxidant compounds. Glucosinolates (GSLs) are specialized metabolites found widely in cruciferous vegetables, which are not only related to flavor formation but also have anti-cancer, disease-resistance, and insect-resistance properties. The content and components of GSLs in the Cruciferae are not only related to genotypes and environmental factors but also are influenced by hormones, plant growth regulators, and mineral elements. This review discusses the effects of different exogenous substances on the GSL content and composition, and analyzes the molecular mechanism by which these substances regulate the biosynthesis of GSLs. Based on the current research status, future research directions are also proposed.

The Investigation of Phenylalanine, Glucosinolate, Benzylisothiocyanate (BITC) and Cyanogenic Glucoside of Papaya Fruits (Carica papaya L. cv. ‘Tainung No. 2’) under Different Development Stages between Seasons and Their Correlation with Bitter Taste. Abstract
Papaya fruit is one of economic crops in Taiwan, mostly eaten as table fruits. In some Asian countries, unripe papaya fruit is eaten as salad and this led to trends in Taiwan as well. However, unripe papaya fruit may taste bitter during cool seasons. Glucosinolate and cyanogenic glucoside are among the substances that cause bitter taste in many plants, which can also be found in papaya. However, there is still no report about the relationship between seasons and bitter taste in papaya fruits. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the glucosinolate biosynthesis and its correlation between bitterness intensity during cool and warm seasons. The bitterness intensity was highest at the young fruit stage and decreased as it developed. In addition, the bitterness intensity in cool season fruits is higher than in warm season fruits. Cyanogenic glucoside and BITC content showed negative correlation with bitterness intensity (r = −0.54 ***; −0.46 ***). Phenylalanine showed positive correlation with bitterness intensity (r = 0.35 ***), but its content did not reach the bitterness threshold concentration, which suggested that phenylalanine only acts as cyanogenic glucoside and glucosinolate precusors. Glucosinolate content showed positive correlation with bitterness intensity at different developmental stages (r = 0.805 ***). However, the correlation value in different lines/cultivars decreased (0.44 ***), suggesting that glucosinolate was not the only substance that caused bitter taste in immature papaya fruits.

Abstract
Consumption of plants in the juvenile stage becomes popular because sprouts are easy to grow, and they can be a tasty source of micro- and macro-nutrients and various phytochemicals. However, some environmental factors during sprout growth can affect their characteristics. In this article, we investigated how low temperatures during cultivation (8 °C) and additional exposure to freezing temperatures (−8 °C) affect the physiological status and phytochemical content of kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) sprouts compared to the control grown at 21 °C. We conducted five independent laboratory experiments and found that low temperature significantly increased proline content and decreased sprouts yield. In addition, low temperature caused a significant decrease in carotenoid and flavonoid content, while phenolic acid content and total glucosinolates content increased, but individual glucosinolates were differentially affected. Our results indicate that low temperatures affect the physiological status of kale sprouts and affect the content of phytochemicals.
