Therapeutic and diagnostic applications of carbon nanotubes in cancer: recent advances and challenges

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon, composed of carbon atoms forming a tube-like structure. Their high surface area, chemical stability, and rich electronic polyaromatic structure facilitate their drug-carrying capacity. Therefore, CNTs have been intensively explored for several biomedical applications, including as a potential treatment option for cancer. By incorporating smart fabrication strategies, CNTs can be designed to specifically target cancer cells. This targeted drug delivery approach not only maximizes the therapeutic utility of CNTs but also minimizes any potential side effects of free drug molecules. CNTs can also be utilised for photothermal therapy (PTT) which uses photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill cancer cells, and in immunotherapeutic applications. Regarding the latter, for example, CNT-based formulations can preferentially target intra-tumoural regulatory T-cells. CNTs also act as efficient antigen presenters. With their capabilities for photoacoustic, fluorescent and Raman imaging, CNTs are excellent diagnostic tools as well. Further, metallic nanoparticles, such as gold or silver nanoparticles, are combined with CNTs to create nanobiosensors to measure biological reactions. This review focuses on current knowledge about the theranostic potential of CNT, challenges associated with their large-scale production, their possible side effects and important parameters to consider when exploring their clinical usage.

Exposure modes determined the effects of nanomaterials on antibiotic resistance genes: The different roles of oxidative stress and quorum sensing

The effects of co-occurrent pollutants on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have raised attentions. However, how the different realistic exposure scenarios determining the effects of nanomaterials (NMs) on ARGs, was still unknown. Herein, the effects of NMs on ARGs under two realistic scenarios was investigated by short-term and long-term exposure modes. The presence of NMs with two different exposure modes could both promote the dissemination of ARGs, and the results were dose-, type- and duration-dependent. Compared to short-term exposure, the long-term exposure increased the abundances of ARGs with a greater extent except nano-ZnO. The long-term exposure increased the overall abundances of target ARGs by 2.9%-20.4%, while shot-term exposure caused the 3.4%-10.5% increment. The mechanisms of ARGs fates driven by NMs exposure were further investigated from the levels of microbial community shift, intracellular oxidative stress, and gene abundance. The variations of several potential bacterial hosts did not contribute to the difference in the ARGs transmission with different exposure modes because NMs types played more vital roles in the shift of microbial community compared to the exposure modes. For the short-term exposure, NMs were capable of triggering the QS by upregulating relevant genes, and further activated the production of surfactin and increased membrane permeability, resulting in the facilitation of ARGs transfer. However, NMs under long-term exposure scenario preferentially stimulated oxidative stress by generating more ROS, which then enhanced ARGs dissemination. Therefore, the exposure mode of NMs was one of the pivotal factors determining the ARGs fates by different triggering mechanisms. This study highlighted the importance of exposure scenario of co-occurrent pollutants on ARGs spread, which will benefit the comprehensive understanding of the actual environmental fates of ARGs.

Unravelling the toxicity of carbon nanomaterials - From cellular interactions to mechanistic understanding

The application of carbon nanomaterials in diverse fields has substantially increased their demand for commercial usage. Within the earliest decade, the development of functional materials has further increased the significance of this element. Despite the advancements recorded, the potential harmful impacts of embracing carbon nanomaterials for biological applications must be balanced against their advantages. Interestingly, many studies have neglected the intriguing and dynamic cellular interaction of carbon nanomaterials and the mechanistic understanding of their property-driven behaviour, even though common toxicity profiles have been reported. Reiterating the toxicity issue, several researchers conclude that these materials have minimal toxicity and may be safe for contact with biological systems at certain dosages. Here, we aim to provide a report on the significance of some of the properties that influence their toxicity. After that, a description of the implication of nanotoxicology in humans and living systems, revealing piece by piece their exposure routes and possible risks, will be provided. Then, an extensive discussion of the mechanistic puzzle modulating the interface between various human cellular systems and carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, graphene, fullerenes, and nanodiamonds will follow. Finally, this review also sheds light on the organization that handles the risk associated with nanomaterials.

A new electrolyte for molten carbonate decarbonization

The molten Li2CO3 transformation of CO2 to oxygen and graphene nanocarbons (GNCs), such as carbon nanotubes, is a large scale process of CO2 removal to mitigate climate change. Sustainability benefits include the stability and storage of the products, and the GNC product value is an incentive for carbon removal. However, high Li2CO3 cost and its competitive use as the primary raw material for EV batteries are obstacles. Common alternative alkali or alkali earth carbonates are ineffective substitutes due to impure GNC products or high energy limitations. A new decarbonization chemistry utilizing a majority of SrCO3 is investigated. SrCO3 is much more abundant, and an order of magnitude less expensive, than Li2CO3. The equivalent affinities of SrCO3 and Li2CO3 for absorbing and releasing CO2 are demonstrated to be comparable, and are unlike all the other alkali and alkali earth carbonates. The temperature domain in which the CO2 transformation to GNCs can be effective is <800 °C. Although the solidus temperature of SrCO3 is 1494 °C, it is remarkably soluble in Li2CO3 at temperatures less than 800 °C, and the electrolysis energy is low. High purity CNTs are synthesized from CO2 respectively in SrCO3 based electrolytes containing 30% or less Li2CO3.

Irida-graphene phonon thermal transport via non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations

Recently, a new 2D carbon allotrope called Irida-Graphene (Irida-G) was proposed, and its reliable stability has been previously predicted. Irida-G is a flat sheet topologically arranged into 3-6-8 carbon rings exhibiting metallic and non-magnetic properties. In this study, we investigated the thermal transport properties of Irida-G using classical reactive molecular dynamics simulations. The findings indicate that Irida-G has an intrinsic thermal conductivity of approximately 215 W mK-1 at room temperature, significantly lower than that of pristine graphene. This decrease is due to characteristic phonon scattering within Irida-G's porous structure. Additionally, the phonon group velocities and vibrational density of states for Irida-G were analyzed, revealing reduced average phonon group velocities compared to graphene. The thermal conductivity of Irida-G is isotropic and shows significant size effects, transitioning from ballistic to diffusive heat transport regimes as the system length increases. These results suggest that while Irida-G has lower thermal conductivity than graphene, it still holds potential for specific thermal management applications, sharing characteristics with other two-dimensional materials.

Development of two novel ELISAs based on Prussian blue nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection of norfloxacin in milk

The development of traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) systems for the detection of small-molecule residues in foods is limited because of the poor stability of biological enzymes and the lower sensitivity of absorption-based signals. Herein, two ELISAs based on Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) were developed to establish ultrasensitive and stable methods for detecting norfloxacin (NOR) in milk. The results show that the detection limit (IC15) of NOR was 0.77 μg L-1 and the sensitivity (IC50) was 18.28 μg L-1 in the standard solution using the PBNPs-based nano-ELISA. When the fluorescence quenching ELISA based on PBNPs was used, the detection limit was 0.06 μg L-1 and the sensitivity was 4.21 μg L-1 in the standard solution. The recoveries and precision were good, as confirmed by analysis of real milk samples. The results were consistent with those of commercial ELISA kits, indicating the high accuracy of these two methods.

A smartphone-based immunochromatographic strip platform for on-site quantitative detection of antigenic targets

To report the testing signal of an immunochromatographic assay for on-site quantitative detection, a portable and user-friendly smartphone-based biosensing platform is developed in this study. This innovative system is composed of an ambient light sensor inherent smartphone reader and a 3D-printed handhold device, a quantitative tool capable of directly interpreting carbon nanoparticle (CNP)-conjugated immunochromatographic strips. To showcase the platform capability, the smartphone-based immunochromatography system (SPICS) reader and device were successfully used in CNP strips for rapid detection of the early pregnancy marker human chorionic gonadotropin in female urine (HCG; limit of detection [LOD]: 0.30 mIU mL-1), prostate-specific antigen in patient blood (PSA; LOD: 0.28 ng mL-1) and ampicillin residue in animal milk (AMP; LOD: 0.23 ng mL-1). The results were fully correlated with conventional commercial instruments (R2 = 0.99). The SPICS platform exhibits significant advantages, including portability, cost-effectiveness, easy operation, and rapid and quantitative detection, making it a valuable on-site diagnosis tool for use in home and community healthcare facilities.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with a new Schiff base containing phenylboronic acid residues: application to the development of a bienzymatic glucose biosensor using a response surface methodology approach

An innovative supramolecular architecture is reported for bienzymatic glucose biosensing based on the use of a nanohybrid made of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) non-covalently functionalized with a Schiff base modified with two phenylboronic acid residues (SB-dBA) as platform for the site-specific immobilization of the glycoproteins glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The analytical signal was obtained from amperometric experiments at - 0.050 V in the presence of 5.0 × 10-4 M hydroquinone as redox mediator. The concentration of GOx and HRP and the interaction time between the enzymes and the nanohybrid MWCNT-SB-dBA deposited at glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) were optimized through a central composite design (CCD)/response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal concentrations of GOx and HRP were 3.0 mg mL-1 and 1.50 mg mL-1, respectively, while the optimum interaction time was 3.0 min. The bienzymatic biosensor presented a sensitivity of (24 ± 2) × 102 µA dL mg-1 ((44 ± 4) × 102 µA M-1), a linear range between 0.06 mg dL-1 and 21.6 mg dL-1 (3.1 µM-1.2 mM) (R2 = 0.9991), and detection and quantification limits of 0.02 mg dL-1 (1.0 µM) and 0.06 mg dL-1 (3.1 µM), respectively. The reproducibility for five sensors prepared with the same MWCNT-SB-dBA nanohybrid was 6.3%, while the reproducibility for sensors prepared with five different nanohybrids and five electrodes each was 7.9%. The GCE/MWCNT-SB-dBA/GOx-HRP was successfully used for the quantification of glucose in artificial human urine and commercial human serum samples.

Insights into One-Dimensional Thermoelectric Materials: A Concise Review of Nanowires and Nanotubes

This brief review covers the thermoelectric properties of one-dimensional materials, such as nanowires and nanotubes. The highly localised peaks of the electronic density of states near the Fermi levels of these nanostructured materials improve the Seebeck coefficient. Moreover, quantum confinement leads to discrete energy levels and a modified density of states, potentially enhancing electrical conductivity. These electronic effects, coupled with the dominance of Umklapp phonon scattering, which reduces thermal conductivity in one-dimensional materials, can achieve unprecedented thermoelectric efficiency not seen in two-dimensional or bulk materials. Notable advancements include carbon and silicon nanotubes and Bi3Te2, Bi, ZnO, SiC, and Si1-xGex nanowires with significantly reduced thermal conductivity and increased ZT. In all these nanowires and nanotubes, efficiency is explored as a function of the diameter. Among these nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes offer mechanical flexibility and improved thermoelectric performance. Although carbon nanotubes theoretically have high thermal conductivity, the improvement of their Seebeck coefficient due to their low-dimensional structure can compensate for it. Regarding flexibility, economic criteria, ease of fabrication, and weight, carbon nanotubes could be a promising candidate for thermoelectric power generation.

Emerging trends in functional materials for electrochemical sensors in nicotine determination

In the past year, there has been significant progress in the utilization of electrochemical strategies for the determination of harmful substances. Among those, the electrochemical determination of nicotine (NIC) has continued to be of significant interest ascribed to the global health concern of e-cigarette products, nowadays. Electrochemical sensors have become promising tools for the detection of NIC ascribed to their high sensitivity, selectivity, and ease of use. This review article provides a concise overview of the advanced developments in electrochemical sensors for NIC detection using modified functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOF), MXene, polymer, and metallic based modifiers. The sensitivity of electrochemical sensors can be improved by modifying them with these conductive materials ascribed to their physical and chemical properties. The review also addresses the challenges and future perspectives in the field, including sensitivity and selectivity improvements, stability and reproducibility issues, integration with data analysis techniques, and emerging trends. In conclusion, this review article may be of interest to researchers intending to delve into the development of functional electrochemical sensors in future studies.

A novel treatment approach using vitamin B12-conjugated sericin for mitigating nanodiamond-induced toxicity in darkling beetles

The escalating use of nanodiamonds (NDs) has raised concerns about their ecotoxicological impact, prompting exploration of therapeutic interventions. This paper pioneers the examination of Vitamin B12-conjugated sericin (VB12-SER) as a potential therapeutic approach against ND-induced toxicity in darkling beetles (Blaps polychresta). The study analyzes mortality rates and organ-specific effects, covering the testis, ovary, and midgut, before and after treatments. Following exposure to 10 mg NDs/g body weight, within a subgroup of individuals termed ND2 with a mortality rate below 50%, two therapeutic treatments were administered, including pure sericin (SER) at 10 mg/mL and VB12-SER at 10.12 mg/mL. Consequently, five experimental groups (control, SER, ND2, ND2+SER, ND2+SER+VB12) were considered. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to assess the lifespan distribution of the insects in these groups over a 30-d period. Analyses revealed increased mortality and significant abnormalities induced by NDs within the examined organs, including cell death, DNA damage, enzyme dysregulation, antioxidant imbalances, protein depletion, lipid peroxidation, and morphological deformities. In contrast, the proposed treatments, especially (ND2+SER+VB12), demonstrated remarkable recovery, highlighting VB12-conjugated SER's potential in mitigating ND-triggered adverse effects. Molecular docking simulations affirmed binding stability and favorable interactions of the VB12-SER complex with target proteins. This research enhances understanding of NDs' effects on B. polychresta, proposing it as an effective bioindicator, and introduces VB12-conjugated SER as a promising therapeutic strategy in nanotoxicological studies.

A Well-Defined Magnesium Complex of C70 6

Controlling and understanding charge state and metal coordination in carbon nanomaterials is crucial to harnessing their unique properties. Here we describe the synthesis of the well-defined fulleride complex [{(Mesnacnac)Mg}6C70], 2, (Mesnacnac)=HC(MeCNMes)2, Mes=2,4,6-Me3C6H2, from the reaction of the β-diketiminate magnesium(I) complex [{(Mesnacnac)Mg}2] with C70 in aromatic solvents. The molecular structure of complex 2 was determined, providing the first high-quality structural study of a complex with the C70 6- ion. In combination with solution state NMR spectroscopic and DFT computational studies, the changes in geometry and charge distribution in the various atom and bond types of the fulleride unit were investigated. Additionally, the influence of the (Mesnacnac)Mg+ cations on the global and local fulleride coordination environment was examined.

Supramolecular Self-Assembled Nanostructures Derived from Amplified Structural Isomerism of Zn(II)-Sn(IV)-Zn(II) Porphyrin Triads and Their Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Pollutants

Two structural isomeric porphyrin-based triads (Zn(II)porphyrin-Sn(IV)porphyrin-Zn(II)porphyrin) denoted as T1 and T2 were prepared from the reaction of meso-[5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrinato]zinc(II) (ZnL) with trans-dihydroxo-[5,10-bis(3-pyridyl)-15,20-bis(phenyl)porphyrinato]tin(IV) (SnP1) and trans-dihydroxo-[5,15-bis(3-pyridyl)-10,20-bis(phenyl)porphyrinato]tin(IV) (SnP2), respectively. All the compounds were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, ESI-MS, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and FE-SEM. Most importantly, the two structurally isomeric porphyrin-based triads supramolecularly self-assembled into completely different nanostructures. T1 exhibits a nanosphere morphology, whereas T2 exhibits a nanofiber morphology. The amplified geometric feature in the structural isomeric porphyrin-based triads dictates the physical and chemical properties of the two triads. Both compounds showed the morphology-dependent visible light catalytic photodegradation of rhodamine B dye (74-97% within 90 min) and tetracycline antibiotic (44-71% within 45 min) in water. In both cases, the photodegradation efficiency of T2 was higher than that of T1. The present investigation can significantly contribute to the remediation of wastewater by tuning the conformational changes in porphyrin-based photocatalysts.

Implications of analytical nanoscience in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields: A critical view

This review summarizes recent progress performed in the design and application of analytical tools and methodologies using nanomaterials for pharmaceutical analysis, and specifically new nanomedicines at distinct phases of development and translation from preclinical to clinical stages. Over the last 10-15 years, a growing number of studies have utilized various nanomaterials, including carbon-based, metallic nanoparticles, polymeric nanomaterials, materials based on biological molecules, and composite nanomaterials as tools for improving the analysis of pharmaceutical products. New and more complex nanomaterials are currently being explored to influence different stages of the analytical process. These materials provide unique properties to support the extraction of analytes in complex samples, increase the selectivity and efficiency of chromatographic separations, and improve the analytical properties of many sensor applications. Indeed, nanomaterials, including electrochemical detection approaches and biosensing, are expanding at a remarkable rate. Furthermore, the analytical performance of numerous approaches to determine drugs in different matrices can be significantly improved in terms of precision, detection limits, selectivity, and time of analysis. However, the quality control and metrological characterization of the currently synthesized nanomaterials still depend on the development of new and improved analytical methodologies, and the application of specific and improved instrumentation. Therefore, there is still much to explore about the properties of nanomaterials which need to be determined even more precisely and accurately.

State-of-the-art nanosensors and kits for the detection of antibiotic residues in milk and dairy products

Antibiotic resistance is increasingly seen as a future concern, but antibiotics are still commonly used in animals, leading to their accumulation in humans through the food chain and posing health risks. The development of nanomaterials has opened up possibilities for creating new sensing strategies to detect antibiotic residues, resulting in the emergence of innovative nanobiosensors with different benefits like rapidity, simplicity, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and precision. Therefore, this comprehensive review provides pertinent and current insights into nanomaterials-based electrochemical/optical sensors for the detection of antibitic residues (ANBr) across milk and dairy products. Here, we first discuss the commonly used ANBs in real products, the significance of ANBr, and also their binding/biological properties. Then, we provide an overview of the role of using different nanomaterials on the development of advanced nanobiosensors like fluorescence-based, colorimetric, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, surface plasmon resonance, and several important electrochemical nanobiosensors relying on different kinds of electrodes. The enhancement of ANB electrochemical behavior for detection is also outlined, along with a concise overview of the utilization of (bio)recognition units. Ultimately, this paper offers a perspective on the future concepts of this research field and commercialized nanomaterial-based sensors to help upgrade the sensing techniques for ANBr in dairy products.

Nano-Micron Combined Hydrogel Microspheres: Novel Answer for Minimal Invasive Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels, key in biomedical research for their hydrophilicity and versatility, have evolved with hydrogel microspheres (HMs) of micron-scale dimensions, enhancing their role in minimally invasive therapeutic delivery, tissue repair, and regeneration. The recent emergence of nanomaterials has ushered in a revolutionary transformation in the biomedical field, which demonstrates tremendous potential in targeted therapies, biological imaging, and disease diagnostics. Consequently, the integration of advanced nanotechnology promises to trigger a new revolution in the realm of hydrogels. HMs loaded with nanomaterials combine the advantages of both hydrogels and nanomaterials, which enables multifaceted functionalities such as efficient drug delivery, sustained release, targeted therapy, biological lubrication, biochemical detection, medical imaging, biosensing monitoring, and micro-robotics. Here, this review comprehensively expounds upon commonly used nanomaterials and their classifications. Then, it provides comprehensive insights into the raw materials and preparation methods of HMs. Besides, the common strategies employed to achieve nano-micron combinations are summarized, and the latest applications of these advanced nano-micron combined HMs in the biomedical field are elucidated. Finally, valuable insights into the future design and development of nano-micron combined HMs are provided.

Graphene quantum dot-crafted nanocomposites: shaping the future landscape of biomedical advances

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a newly developed class of material, known as zero-dimensional nanomaterials, with characteristics derived from both carbon dots (CDs) and graphene. GQDs exhibit several ideal properties, including the potential to absorb incident energy, high water solubility, tunable photoluminescence, good stability, high drug-loading capacity, and notable biocompatibility, which make them powerful tools for various applications in the field of biomedicine. Additionally, GQDs can be incorporated with additional materials to develop nanocomposites with exceptional qualities and enriched functionalities. Inspired by the intriguing scientific discoveries and substantial contributions of GQDs to the field of biomedicine, we present a broad overview of recent advancements in GQDs-based nanocomposites for biomedical applications. The review first outlines the latest synthesis and classification of GQDs nanocomposite and enables their use in advanced composite materials for biomedicine. Furthermore, the systematic study of the biomedical applications for GQDs-based nanocomposites of drug delivery, biosensing, photothermal, photodynamic and combination therapies are emphasized. Finally, possibilities, challenges, and paths are highlighted to encourage additional research, which will lead to new therapeutics and global healthcare improvements.

Investigation of the effects and mechanisms of manganese-based NMs on rice growth

Manganese-based (Mn-based) nanomaterials (NMs) have great potential as alternatives to conventional Mn fertilizers. Yet, its environmental risks and effects on plant growth are not completely well understood. This study investigated the physiological effects of manganese dioxide (MnO2) and manganese tetroxide (Mn3O4) NMs on inter-root exposure (0-500 mg/L) of hydroponically grown rice. The results showed that on inter-root exposure, 50 mg/L Mn-based NMs promoted the uptake of mineral elements and enhanced the enzymatic activities of antioxidant systems (CAT and SOD) in rice, whereas 500 mg/L Mn3O4 NMs disrupted the mineral element homeostasis and led to phytotoxicity. The promotion effect of MnO2 NMs was better, firstly because MnO2 NMs treatment had lower Mn content in the plant than Mn3O4 NMs. In addition, MnO2 NMs are more transported and absorbed in the plant in ionic form, while Mn3O4 NMs exist in granular form. MnO2 NMs and Mn3O4 NMs both can be used as nano-fertilizers to improve the growth of rice by inter-root application, but the doses should be carefully selected.

Plant-nano interactions: A new insight of nano-phytotoxicity

Whether nanoparticles (NPs) are boon or bane for society has been a centre of in-depth debate and key consideration in recent times. Exclusive physicochemical properties like small size, large surface area-to-volume ratio, robust catalytic activity, immense surface energy, magnetism and superior biocompatibility make NPs obligatory in many scientific, biomedical and industrial ventures. Nano-enabled products are newer entrants in the present era. To attenuate environmental stress and maximize crop yields, scientists are tempted to introduce NPs as augmented supplements in agriculture. The feasible approaches for NPs delivery are irrigation, foliar spraying or seed priming. Internalization of excessive NPs to plants endorses negative implications at higher trophic levels via biomagnification. The characteristics of NPs (dimensions, type, solubility, surface charge), applied concentration and duration of exposure are prime factors conferring nanotoxicity in plants. Several reports approved NPs persuaded toxicity can precisely mimic abiotic stress effects. The signature effects of nanotoxicity include poor root outgrowth, biomass reduction, oxidative stress evolution, lipid peroxidation, biomolecular damage, perturbed antioxidants, genotoxicity and nutrient imbalance in plants. NPs stress impels mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade and urges stress responsive defence gene expression to counteract stress in plants. Exogenous supplementation of nitric oxide (NO), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), phytohormones, and melatonin (ME) is novel strategy to circumvent nanotoxicity. Briefly, this review appraises plants' physio-biochemical responses and adaptation scenarios to endure NPs stress. As NPs stress represents large-scale contaminants, advanced research is indispensable to avert indiscriminate NPs usage for synchronizing nano-security in multinational markets.

Carbon Quantum Dots: Properties, Preparation, and Applications

Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Polyethylene terephthalate waste derived nanomaterials (WDNMs) and its utilization in electrochemical devices

Plastics are a vital component of our daily lives in the contemporary globalization period; they are present in all facets of modern life. Because the bulk of synthetic plastics utilized in the market are non-biodegradable by nature, the issues associated with their contamination are unavoidable in an era dominated by polymers. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is extensively used in industries such as automotive, packaging, textile, food, and beverages production represents a major share of these non-biodegradable polymer productions. Given its extensive application across various sectors, PET usage results in a considerable amount of post-consumer waste, majority of which require disposal after a certain period. However, the recycling of polymeric waste materials has emerged as a prominent topic in research, driven by growing environmental consciousness. Numerous studies indicate that products derived from polymeric waste can be converted into a new polymeric resource in diverse sectors, including organic coatings and regenerative medicine. This review aims to consolidate significant scientific literatures on the recycling PET waste for electrochemical device applications. It also highlights the current challenges in scaling up these processes for industrial application.

Carbon Nanomaterial Fluorescent Probes and Their Biological Applications

Fluorescent carbon nanomaterials have broadly useful chemical and photophysical attributes that are conducive to applications in biology. In this review, we focus on materials whose photophysics allow for the use of these materials in biomedical and environmental applications, with emphasis on imaging, biosensing, and cargo delivery. The review focuses primarily on graphitic carbon nanomaterials including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, as well as carbon dots and carbon nanohoops. Recent advances in and future prospects of these fields are discussed at depth, and where appropriate, references to reviews pertaining to older literature are provided.

Comprehensive toxicity assessment of nanodiamond on Blaps polychresta: implications and novel findings

With the increasing development of nanomaterials, the use of nanodiamonds (NDs) has been broadly manifested in many applications. However, their high penetration into the ecosystem indubitably poses remarkable toxicological risks. This paper investigates the toxic effects of NDs on the darkling beetle, Blaps polychresta Forskal, 1775 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Survival analysis was carried out by monitoring the beetles for 30 d after the injection of four different doses of NDs. A dose of 10.0 mg NDs/g body weight, causing less than 50% mortality effect, was assigned in the analysis of the different organs of studied beetles, including testis, ovary, and midgut. Structural and ultrastructural analyses were followed using light, TEM, and SEM microscopes. In addition, a variety of stress markers and enzyme activities were assessed using spectrophotometric methods. Furthermore, cell viability and DNA damage were evaluated using cytometry and comet assay, respectively. Compared to the control group, the NDs-treated group was exposed to various abnormalities within all the studied organs as follows. Significant disturbances in enzyme activities were accompanied by an apparent dysregulation in the antioxidant system. The flow cytometry results indicated a substantial decrease of viable cells along with a rise of apoptotic and necrotic cells. The comet assay demonstrated a highly increased level of DNA damage. Likewise, histological analyses accentuated the same findings showing remarkable deformities in the studied organs. Prominently, the research findings substantially contribute for the first time to evaluating the critical effects of NDs on B. polychresta, adopted as the bioindicator in this paper.

Hybrid Nanomaterials: A Brief Overview of Versatile Solutions for Sensor Technology in Healthcare and Environmental Applications

The integration of nanomaterials into sensor technologies not only poses challenges but also opens up promising prospects for future research. These challenges include assessing the toxicity of nanomaterials, scalability issues, and the seamless integration of these materials into existing infrastructures. Future development opportunities lie in creating multifunctional nanocomposites and environmentally friendly nanomaterials. Crucial to this process is collaboration between universities, industry, and regulatory authorities to establish standardization in this evolving field. Our perspective favours using screen-printed sensors that employ nanocomposites with high electrochemical conductivity. This approach not only offers cost-effective production methods but also allows for customizable designs. Furthermore, incorporating hybrids based on carbon-based nanomaterials and functionalized Mxene significantly enhances sensor performance. These high electrochemical conductivity sensors are portable, rapid, and well-suited for on-site environmental monitoring, seamlessly aligning with Internet of Things (IoT) platforms for developing intelligent systems. Simultaneously, advances in electrochemical sensor technology are actively working to elevate sensitivity through integrating nanotechnology, miniaturization, and innovative electrode designs. This comprehensive approach aims to unlock the full potential of sensor technologies, catering to diverse applications ranging from healthcare to environmental monitoring. This review aims to summarise the latest trends in using hybrid nanomaterial-based sensors, explicitly focusing on their application in detecting environmental contaminants.

A review of aptamer-conjugated nanomaterials for analytical sample preparation: Classification according to the utilized nanomaterials

BACKGROUND

Sample extraction before detection is a critical step in analysis. Since targets of interest are often found in complex matrices, the sample can not be directly introduced to the analytical instrument. Nanomaterials with unique physical-chemical properties are excellent supports for use in sorbent-based extraction. However, they lack selectivity and thus need to be functionalized with target-capturing molecules. Antibodies and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can be used for this purpose, but they have some problems that limit their practical applications. Hence, functionalization of nanomaterials for selectivity remains a problem.

RESULTS

Nucleic acid aptamers are affinity reagents that can provide superiority to antibodies since they can be selected in vitro and at a lower cost. Moreover, aptamers can be chemically synthesized and easily modified with different functional groups. Hence, aptamers are good candidates to impart selectivity to the nanomaterials. Recent studies focus on the integration of aptamers with magnetic nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, gold nanoparticles, gold nanorods, silica nanomaterials, and nanofibers. The unique properties of nanomaterials and aptamers make the aptamer-conjugated nanomaterials attractive for use in sample preparation. Aptamer-functionalized nanomaterials have been successfully used for selective extraction of proteins, small molecules, and cells from different types of complex samples such as serum, urine, and milk. In particular, magnetic nanoparticles have a wider use due to the rapid extraction of the sample under magnetic field.

SIGNIFICANCE

In this review, we aim to emphasize how beneficial features of nanomaterials and aptamers could be combined for extraction or enrichment of the analytes from complex samples. We aim to highlight that the benefits are twofold in terms of selectivity and efficiency when employing nanomaterials and aptamers together as a single platform.

Recent Trends in Chemical Sensors for Detecting Toxic Materials

Industrial development has led to the widespread production of toxic materials, including carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic chemicals. Even with strict management and control measures, such materials still pose threats to human health. Therefore, convenient chemical sensors are required for toxic chemical monitoring, such as optical, electrochemical, nanomaterial-based, and biological-system-based sensors. Many existing and new chemical sensors have been developed, as well as new methods based on novel technologies for detecting toxic materials. The emergence of material sciences and advanced technologies for fabrication and signal-transducing processes has led to substantial improvements in the sensing elements for target recognition and signal-transducing elements for reporting interactions between targets and sensing elements. Many excellent reviews have effectively summarized the general principles and applications of different types of chemical sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on chemical sensor advancements in terms of the sensing and signal-transducing elements, as well as more recent achievements in chemical sensors for toxic material detection. We also discuss recent trends in biosensors for the detection of toxic materials.

Nanocomposite Hydrogels with Self-Assembling Peptide-Functionalized Carbon Nanostructures

Carbon nanostructures (CNSs) are attractive components to attain nanocomposites, yet their hydrophobic nature and strong tendency to aggregate often limit their use in aqueous conditions and negatively impact their properties. In this work, carbon nanohorns (CNHs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene (G) are first oxidized, and then reacted to covalently anchor the self-assembling tripeptide L-Leu-D-Phe-D-Phe to improve their dispersibility in phosphate buffer, and favor the formation of hydrogels formed by the self-organizing L-Leu-D-Phe-D-Phe present in solution. The obtained nanocomposites are then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), oscillatory rheology, and conductivity measurements to gain useful insights as to the key factors that determine self-healing ability for the future design of this type of nanocomposites.

Carbon Nanostructured Immunosensing of Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-Protein Antibodies

The rampant spread and death rate of the recent coronavirus pandemic related to the SARS-CoV-2 respiratory virus have underscored the critical need for affordable, portable virus diagnostics, particularly in resource-limited settings. Moreover, efficient and timely monitoring of vaccine efficacy is needed to prevent future widespread infections. Electrochemical immunosensing poses an effective alternative to conventional molecular spectroscopic approaches, offering rapid, cost-effective, sensitive, and portable electroanalysis of disease biomarkers and antibodies; however, efforts to improve binding efficiency and sensitivity are still being investigated. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in particular have shown promise in improving device sensitivity. This study reports the development of a GQD-functionalized point-of-contamination device leveraging the selective interactions between SARS-CoV-2-specific Spike (S) Protein receptor binding domain (RBD) antigens and IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2-specific S-protein antibodies at screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) surfaces. The immunocomplexes formed at the GQD surfaces result in the interruption of the redox reactions that take place in the presence of a redox probe, decreasing the current response. Increased active surface area, conductivity, and binding via EDC/NHS chemistry were achieved due to the nanomaterial inclusion, with 5 nm, blue luminescent GQDs offering the best results. GQD concentration, EDC/NHS ratio, and RBD S-protein incubation time and concentration were optimized for the biosensor, and inter- and intra-screen-printed carbon electrode detection was investigated by calibration studies on multiple and single electrodes. The single electrode used for the entire calibration provided the best results. The label-free immunosensor was able to selectively detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies between 0.5 and 100 ng/mL in the presence of IgM and other coronavirus antibodies with an excellent regression of 0.9599. A LOD of 2.028 ng/mL was found, offering comparable findings to the literature-reported values. The detection sensitivity of the sensor is further compared to non-specific IgM antibodies. The developed GQD immunosensor was compared to other low-oxygen content carbon nanomaterials, namely (i) carbon quantum dot (CQD), (ii) electrochemically reduced graphene oxide, and (iii) carbon black-functionalized devices. The findings suggest that improved electron transfer kinetics and increased active surface area of the CNs, along with surface oxygen content, aid in the detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. The novel immunosensor suggests a possible application toward monitoring of IgG antibody production in SARS-CoV-2-vaccinated patients to study immune responses, vaccine efficacy, and lifetime to meet the demands for POC analysis in resource-limited settings.

Material and Design Toolkit for Drug Delivery: State of the Art, Trends, and Challenges

The nanomaterial and related toolkit have promising applications for improving human health and well-being. Nanobased drug delivery systems use nanoscale materials as carriers to deliver therapeutic agents in a targeted and controlled manner, and they have shown potential to address issues associated with conventional drug delivery systems. They offer benefits for treating various illnesses by encapsulating or conjugating biological agents, chemotherapeutic drugs, and immunotherapeutic agents. The potential applications of this technology are vast; however, significant challenges exist to overcome such as safety issues, toxicity, efficacy, and insufficient capacity. This article discusses the latest developments in drug delivery systems, including drug release mechanisms, material toolkits, related design molecules, and parameters. The concluding section examines the limitations and provides insights into future possibilities.

Bioimaging based on Poly(ethylenimine)-Coated Carbon Dots and Gold Nanoparticles for pH Sensing and Metal Enhanced Fluorescence

When exposed to specific light wavelengths, carbon dots (CDs), which tend to be fluorescent, can emit colorful light. It provides them with a lot of adaptability for different applications including bioimaging, optoelectronics, and even environmental sensing. Poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) coated carbon dots (PEI-CDs) with a long emission wavelength were synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The resultant CDs show strong fluorescence with quantum yield up to 20.2%. The PEI-CDs exist with distinct pH-sensitive features with pH values in the range of 2-14. The optical characteristics of CDs are pH-responsive due to the presence of different amine groups on PEI, which is a functional polycationic polymer. One of the most widely employed nanoparticles for improving the fluorescence plasmonic characteristics of a nanocomposite is gold. Gold nanoparticles were coupled with PEI-CDs in this assay by using the EDC-NHS coupling to increase the photoluminescence property of the PEI-CDs by using the metal-enhanced fluorescence approach. In the presence of gold nanoparticles, the fluorescence is enhanced 5-6 times. The likely mechanism in our investigation was primarily derived from enhancement of the intrinsic radiative decay rate rather than the local electric field impact. Moreover, PEI-CDs can be used as a bioimaging agent, as these molecules are nontoxic to the cells, and the positively charged PEI-CDs have the potential for nuclear targeting, allowing for electrostatic contact with DNA in the nucleus. This finding will expand the application that the PEI-CDs can be used in the future for targeted imaging applications.

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotubes inhibit the development of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms

Staphylococcus aureus forms biofilms that cause considerable morbidity and mortality in patients who receive implanted devices such as prosthetics or fixator pins. An ideal surface for such medical devices would inhibit biofilm growth. Recently, it was reported that surface modification of stainless steel materials with carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotubes (CICNT) inhibits the growth of S. aureus biofilms. The purpose of this study was to investigate this antimicrobial effect on titanium materials with CICNT coated surfaces in a variety of surface morphologies and across a broader spectrum of S. aureus isolates. Study samples of CICNT-coated titanium, and control samples of bare titanium, a common implant material, were exposed to S. aureus. Viable bacteria were removed from adhered biofilms and quantified as colony forming units. Scanning electron microscopy was used to qualitatively analyze biofilms both before and after removal of cells. The CICNT surface was found to have significantly fewer adherent bacteria than bare titanium control surfaces, both via colony forming unit and microscopic analyses. This effect was most pronounced on CICNT surfaces with an average nanotube diameter of 150 nm, showing a 2.5-fold reduction in adherent bacteria. Since S. aureus forms different biofilm structures by isolate and by growth conditions, we tested 7 total isolates and found a significant reduction in the biofilm load in six out of seven S. aureus isolates tested. To examine whether the anti-biofilm effect was due to the structure of the nanotubes, we generated an unstructured carbon surface. Significantly more bacteria adhered to a nonstructured carbon surface than to the 150 nm CICNT surface, suggesting that the topography of the nanotube structure itself has anti-biofilm properties. The CICNT surface possesses anti-biofilm properties that result in fewer adherent S. aureus bacteria. These anti-biofilm properties are consistent across multiple isolates of S. aureus and are affected by nanotube diameter. The experiments performed in this study suggest that this effect is due to the nanostructure of the CICNT surface.

Highly Blue-fluorescent Carbon Quantum Dots Obtained from Medlar Seed for Hg2+ Determination in Real Water Samples

The carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared from medlar seeds with pyrolysis method in an oven at 300 °C. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used in the characterization of CQDs. CQDs, give a strong blue fluorescence under UV lamp (at 365 nm), have a quantum yield of 12.2%. The influence of metal ions such as K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Be2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Ag+, Hg2+, and Al3+ on the fluorescence properties of the CQDs was investigated by means of emission spectrophotometry. CQDs altering fluorescence characteristics depending on the excitation wavelength show selectivity for Hg2+ ions with outstanding fluorescence quenching among the tested metal ions. Based on these results, a new fluorimetric method has been developed for the determination of Hg2+ in real water samples. The linear range of method is 1.0 to 5.0 mgL- 1. Limit of detection and limit of quantification are 0.26 and 0.79 mgL- 1, respectively. The proposed method has been successfully used in determination of Hg2+ ions in tap, sea, and stream water samples with application of addition-recovery experiments.

Zero-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials for Fluorescent Sensing and Imaging

Advances in nanotechnology and nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest and play key roles in scientific innovations in diverse fields. In particular, increased attention has been focused on carbon-based nanomaterials exhibiting diverse extended structures and unique properties. Among these materials, zero-dimensional structures, including fullerenes, carbon nano-onions, carbon nanodiamonds, and carbon dots, possess excellent bioaffinities and superior fluorescence properties that make these structures suitable for application to environmental and biological sensing, imaging, and therapeutics. This review provides a systematic overview of the classification and structural properties, design principles and preparation methods, and optical properties and sensing applications of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Recent interesting breakthroughs in the sensitive and selective sensing and imaging of heavy metal pollutants, hazardous substances, and bioactive molecules as well as applications in information encryption, super-resolution and photoacoustic imaging, and phototherapy and nanomedicine delivery are the main focus of this review. Finally, future challenges and prospects of these materials are highlighted and envisaged. This review presents a comprehensive basis and directions for designing, developing, and applying fascinating fluorescent sensors fabricated based on zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials for specific requirements in numerous research fields.

Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon Microbeads

We report a microfluidic-based droplet generation platform for synthesizing micron-sized porous carbon microspheres. The setup employs carbon materials such as graphite, carbon nanotubes, graphene, fullerenes, and carbon black as starting materials. Custom composition, structure, and function are achieved through combinations of carbon materials, cross-linkers, and additives along with variations in process parameters. Carbon materials can be assembled into spheres with a mean diameter of units to hundreds of μm with relatively tight size distribution (<25% RSD). Pore structure and size (tens to hundreds of angstrom) can be modulated by incorporating porogen/coporogen dilutants during synthesis. The microbeads have excellent mechanical stability with an elastic modulus of hundreds of MPa. They can sustain high dynamic fluid flow pressures of up to 9000 psi. This work lays the foundation for synthesizing novel tailorable and customizable carbon microbeads. It opens avenues for applying these novel materials for composite and additive manufacturing, energy, life science, and biomedical applications.

Molecularly or atomically precise nanostructures for bio-applications: how far have we come?

A huge variety of nanostructures are promising for biomedical applications, but only a few have been practically applied. Among the various reasons, the limited structural preciseness is a critical one, as it increases the difficulty in product quality control, accurate dosing, and ensuring the repeatability of material performance. Constructing nanoparticles with molecule-like preciseness is becoming a new research field. In this review, we focus on the artificial nanomaterials that can currently be molecularly or atomically precise, including DNA nanostructures, some metallic nanoclusters, dendrimer nanoparticles and carbon nanostructures, describing their syntheses, bio-applications and limitations, in view of up-to-date studies. A perspective on their potential for clinical translation is also given. This review is expected to provide a particular rationale for the future design of nanomedicines.

Recent Advances on the Design and Applications of Antimicrobial Nanomaterials

Present worldwide difficulties in healthcare and the environment have motivated the investigation and research of novel materials in an effort to find novel techniques to address the current challenges and requirements. In particular, the use of nanomaterials has demonstrated a significant promise in the fight against bacterial infections and the problem of antibiotic resistance. Metal nanoparticles and carbon-based nanomaterials in particular have been highlighted for their exceptional abilities to inhibit many types of bacteria and pathogens. In order for these materials to be as effective as possible, synthetic techniques are crucial. Therefore, in this review article, we highlight some recent developments in the design and synthesis of various nanomaterials, including metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Zn, or Cu), metal hybrid nanomaterials, and the synthesis of multi-metallic hybrid nanostructured materials. Following that, examples of these materials' applications in antimicrobial performance targeted at eradicating multi-drug resistant bacteria, material protection such as microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), or additives in construction materials have been described.

Biosensing Systems Based on Graphene Oxide Fluorescence Quenching Effect

Graphene oxide (GO) is a versatile material obtained by the strong oxidation of graphite. Among its peculiar properties, there is the outstanding ability to significantly alter the fluorescence of many common fluorophores and dyes. This property has been exploited in the design of novel switch-ON and switch-OFF fluorescence biosensing platforms for the detection of a plethora of biomolecules, especially pathological biomarkers and environmental contaminants. Currently, novel advanced strategies are being developed for therapeutic, diagnostic and theranostic approaches to widespread pathologies caused by viral or bacterial agents, as well as to cancer. This work illustrates an overview of the most recent applications of GO-based sensing systems relying on its fluorescence quenching effect.

Nanomaterial interfaces designed with different biorecognition elements for biosensing of key foodborne pathogens

Foodborne diseases caused by pathogen bacteria are a serious problem toward the safety of human life in a worldwide. Conventional methods for pathogen bacteria detection have several handicaps, including trained personnel requirement, low sensitivity, laborious enrichment steps, low selectivity, and long-term experiments. There is a need for precise and rapid identification and detection of foodborne pathogens. Biosensors are a remarkable alternative for the detection of foodborne bacteria compared to conventional methods. In recent years, there are different strategies for the designing of specific and sensitive biosensors. Researchers activated to develop enhanced biosensors with different transducer and recognition elements. Thus, the aim of this study was to provide a topical and detailed review on aptamer, nanofiber, and metal organic framework-based biosensors for the detection of food pathogens. First, the conventional methods, type of biosensors, common transducer, and recognition element were systematically explained. Then, novel signal amplification materials and nanomaterials were introduced. Last, current shortcomings were emphasized, and future alternatives were discussed.

Elastomer Nanocomposites: Effect of Filler-Matrix and Filler-Filler Interactions

The reinforcement of elastomers is essential in the rubber industry in order to obtain the properties required for commercial applications. The addition of active fillers in an elastomer usually leads to an improvement in the mechanical properties such as the elastic modulus and the rupture properties. Filled rubbers are also characterized by two specific behaviors related to energy dissipation known as the Payne and the Mullins effects. The Payne effect is related to non-linear viscoelastic behavior of the storage modulus while the Mullins or stress-softening effect is characterized by a lowering in the stress when the vulcanizate is extended a second time. Both effects are shown to strongly depend on the interfacial adhesion and filler dispersion. The basic mechanisms of reinforcement are first discussed in the case of conventional rubber composites filled with carbon black or silica usually present in the host matrix in the form of aggregates and agglomerates. The use of nanoscale fillers with isotropic or anisotropic morphologies is expected to yield much more improvement than that imparted by micron-scale fillers owing to the very large polymer-filler interface. This work reports some results obtained with three types of nanoparticles that can reinforce rubbery matrices: spherical, rod-shaped and layered fillers. Each type of particle is shown to impart to the host medium a specific reinforcement on account of its own structure and geometry. The novelty of this work is to emphasize the particular mechanical behavior of some systems filled with nanospherical particles such as in situ silica-filled poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks that display a strong polymer-filler interface and whose mechanical response is typical of double network elastomers. Additionally, the potential of carbon dots as a reinforcing filler for elastomeric materials is highlighted. Different results are reported on the reinforcement imparted by carbon nanotubes and graphenic materials that is far below their expected capability despite the development of various techniques intended to reduce particle aggregation and improve interfacial bonding with the host matrix.

Adaptive Peptide Molecule as the Promising Highly-Efficient Gas-Sensor Material: In Silico Study

Gas sensors are currently employed in various applications in fields such as medicine, ecology, and food processing, and serve as monitoring tools for the protection of human health, safety, and quality of life. Herein, we discuss a promising direction in the research and development of gas sensors based on peptides-biomolecules with high selectivity and sensitivity to various gases. Thanks to the technique developed in this work, which uses a framework based on the density-functional tight-binding theory (DFTB), the most probable adsorption centers were identified and used to describe the interaction of some analyte molecules with peptides. The DFTB method revealed that the physical adsorption of acetone, ammonium, benzene, ethanol, hexane, methanol, toluene, and trinitrotoluene had a binding energy in the range from -0.28 eV to -1.46 eV. It was found that peptides may adapt to the approaching analyte by changing their volume up to a maximum value of approx. 13%, in order to confine electron clouds around the adsorbed molecule. Based on the results obtained, the prospects for using the proposed peptide configurations in gas sensor devices are good.

Nanofluids for Direct-Absorption Solar Collectors-DASCs: A Review on Recent Progress and Future Perspectives

Owing to their superior optical and thermal properties over conventional fluids, nanofluids represent an innovative approach for use as working fluids in direct-absorption solar collectors for efficient solar-to-thermal energy conversion. The application of nanofluids in direct-absorption solar collectors demands high-performance solar thermal nanofluids that exhibit exceptional physical and chemical stability over long periods and under a variety of operating, fluid dynamics, and temperature conditions. In this review, we discuss recent developments in the field of nanofluids utilized in direct-absorption solar collectors in terms of their preparation techniques, optical behaviours, solar thermal energy conversion performance, as well as their physical and thermal stability, along with the experimental setups and calculation approaches used. We also highlight the challenges associated with the practical implementation of nanofluid-based direct-absorption solar collectors and offer suggestions and an outlook for the future.

Multifunctional Carbon-Based Nanoparticles: Theranostic Applications in Cancer Therapy and Diagnosis

Cancer diagnosis and treatment are the most critical challenges in modern medicine. Conventional cancer treatments no longer meet the needs of the health field due to the high rate of mutations and epigenetic factors that have caused drug resistance in tumor cells. Hence, the search for unique methods and factors is quickly expanding. The development of nanotechnology in medicine and the search for a system to integrate treatment and diagnosis to achieve an effective approach to overcome the known limitations of conventional treatment methods have led to the emergence of theranostic nanoparticles and nanosystems based on these nanoparticles. An influential group of these nanoparticles is carbon-based theranostic nanoparticles. These nanoparticles have received significant attention due to their unique properties, such as electrical conductivity, high strength, excellent surface chemistry, and wide range of structural diversity (graphene, nanodiamond, carbon quantum dots, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and carbon nanohorns). These nanoparticles were widely used in various fields, such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, imaging, and biosensors. In this review, we discuss in detail the recent features and advances in carbon-based theranostic nanoparticles and the advanced and diverse strategies used to treat diseases with these nanoparticles.

Hydrogels from a Self-Assembling Tripeptide and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs): Comparison between Single-Walled and Double-Walled CNTs

Supramolecular hydrogels obtained from the self-organization of simple peptides, such as tripeptides, are attractive soft materials. Their viscoelastic properties can be enhanced through the inclusion of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), although their presence can also hinder self-assembly, thus requiring investigation of the compatibility of CNMs with peptide supramolecular organization. In this work, we compared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) as nanostructured additives for a tripeptide hydrogel, revealing superior performance by the latter. Several spectroscopic techniques, as well as thermogravimetric analyses, microscopy, and rheology data, provide details to elucidate the structure and behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels of this kind.

Designing Intelligent Nanomaterials to Achieve Highly Sensitive Diagnoses and Multimodality Therapy of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer (BC) is among the most common malignant tumors of the genitourinary system worldwide. In recent years, the rate of BC incidence has increased, and the recurrence rate is high, resulting in poor quality of life for patients. Therefore, how to develop an effective method to achieve synchronous precise diagnoses and BC therapies is a difficult problem to solve clinically. Previous reports usually focus on the role of nanomaterials as drug delivery carriers, while a summary of the functional design and application of nanomaterials is lacking. Summarizing the application of functional nanomaterials in high-sensitivity diagnosis and multimodality therapy of BC is urgently needed. This review summarizes the application of nanotechnology in BC diagnosis, including the application of nanotechnology in the sensoring of BC biomarkers and their role in monitoring BC. In addition, conventional and combination therapies strategy in potential BC therapy are analyzed. Moreover, different kinds of nanomaterials in BC multimodal therapy according to pathological features of BC are also outlined. The goal of this review is to present an overview of the application of nanomaterials in the theranostics of BC to provide guidance for the application of functional nanomaterials to precisely diagnose and treat BC.

Nanomaterial-mediated photoporation for intracellular delivery

Translocation of extrinsic molecules into living cells is becoming increasingly crucial in biological studies ranging from cell engineering to biomedical applications. The concerns regarding biosafety and immunogenicity for conventional vectors and physical methods yet challenge effective intracellular delivery. Here, we begin with an overview of approaches for trans-membrane delivery up to now. These methods are featured with a relatively mature application but usually encounter low cell survival. Our review then proposes an advanced application for nanomaterial-sensitized photoporation triggered with a laser. We cover the mechanisms, procedures, and outcomes of photoporation-induced intracellular delivery with a highlight on its versatility to different living cells. We hope the review discussed here encourages researchers to further improvement and applications for photoporation-induced intracellular delivery. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE.

Nanotechnology-Assisted Biosensors for the Detection of Viral Nucleic Acids: An Overview

The accurate and rapid diagnosis of viral diseases has garnered increasing attention in the field of biosensors. The development of highly sensitive, selective, and accessible biosensors is crucial for early disease detection and preventing mortality. However, developing biosensors optimized for viral disease diagnosis has several limitations, including the accurate detection of mutations. For decades, nanotechnology has been applied in numerous biological fields such as biosensors, bioelectronics, and regenerative medicine. Nanotechnology offers a promising strategy to address the current limitations of conventional viral nucleic acid-based biosensors. The implementation of nanotechnologies, such as functional nanomaterials, nanoplatform-fabrication techniques, and surface nanoengineering, to biosensors has not only improved the performance of biosensors but has also expanded the range of sensing targets. Therefore, a deep understanding of the combination of nanotechnologies and biosensors is required to prepare for sanitary emergencies such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic. In this review, we provide interdisciplinary information on nanotechnology-assisted biosensors. First, representative nanotechnologies for biosensors are discussed, after which this review summarizes various nanotechnology-assisted viral nucleic acid biosensors. Therefore, we expect that this review will provide a valuable basis for the development of novel viral nucleic acid biosensors.

Global Trends of Cosmeceutical in Nanotechnology: A Review

Nanotechnology suggests different innovative solutions to augment the worth of cosmetic products through the targeted delivery of content that manifests scientific innovation in research and development. Different nanosystems, like liposomes, niosomes, microemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoform lipid carriers, nanoemulsions, and nanospheres, are employed in cosmetics. These nanosystems exhibit various innovative cosmetic functions, including site-specific targeting, controlled content release, more stability, improved skin penetration and enhanced entrapment efficiency of loaded compounds. Thus, cosmeceuticals are assumed as the highest-progressing fragment of the personal care industries that have progressed drastically over the years. In recent decades, cosmetic science has widened the origin of its application in different fields. Nanosystems in cosmetics are beneficial in treating different conditions like hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, dandruff, photoaging and hair damage. This review highlights the different nanosystems used in cosmetics for the targeted delivery of loaded content and commercially available formulations. Moreover, this review article has delineated different patented nanocosmetic formulation nanosystems and future aspects of nanocarriers in cosmetics.
