Abstract
CONTEXT Supplementation with dietary components is a promising approach for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). OBJECTIVE The aim was to examine the effects of dietary supplements on experimental animal models of IBD. DATA SOURCES Articles were selected from 2016 to 2021 and from specific databases (PubMed, Embase, and Scopus). DATA EXTRACTION Forty-nine studies were analyzed. DATA ANALYSIS Of the 49 studies, 8 investigated supplementation with oils/polyunsaturated fatty acids, 5 with flavones, 5 with prebiotics and probiotics, 6 with amino acids, 4 with fruits, 4 with vegetables, 2 with minerals, 2 with vitamins, 3 with plants, 2 with polyphenols, and 8 from various sources. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, flavones, prebiotics, and probiotics are among the most extensively studied compounds. Protection is associated with reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, protecting the epithelial barrier and altering the microbiota; however, more rigorous protocols are needed to definitively confirm their protective effects and enable translational research. Fruits, vegetables, plant compounds, minerals, vitamins, and polyphenols, on the other hand, should be studied further and deserve more attention in research. CONCLUSION The results included here support further research into the beneficial effects of supplementation in IBD. Some studies are more advanced and have presented more elaborate protocols, while others still require an increase in knowledge. The identification of dietary supplements that can improve the course of IBD could have an important and lasting impact on the treatment of IBD. Abstract
Single-crystal structures of four alditol complexes are presented. In LuCl3/galactitol and ScCl3/myo-inositol complexes, μ2-bridge-relevant deprotonations were observed. The polarization from two rare earth ions in the μ2-bridge activates the chemically inert OH and promotes deprotonation. Additionally, mass spectrometry, pH experiments, and quantum chemistry calculations were conducted to enhance our understanding of the μ2-bridge-relevant deprotonations. A common structural feature of the complexes where μ2-bridge-relevant deprotonation takes place is that two metal ions and two oxygen atoms in two μ2-bridges form an M2O2 cluster. The four atoms in the M2O2 cluster make up a parallelogram. Such a structure is useful to balance the strong coulombic repulsions between two M3+ and between two O-. In the ScCl3/myo-inositol complex, the deprotonation exhibits a characteristic of regional/chiral selectivity. Galactitol is a third alditol ligand where μ2-bridge-relevant deprotonation is observed. The flexible backbone of the galactitol allows the formation of more five-membered chelating rings and six-membered chelating rings, which are used to stabilize the rare earth ions of the μ2-bridge. The coordination makes the backbone of galactitol deviate from the zigzag conformation. The above results are helpful in the rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic immune disease that is difficult to cure. We recently found that chick early amniotic fluid (ceAF) has notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, through its active components. This study demonstrates the potential of ceAF as a protective agent against UC. UPLC-MS mass spectrometry identified key components of ceAF, including various fatty acids and nucleosides. In vitro, ceAF improved viability in DSS-induced Caco-2 cells, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α, and increased the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. It also upregulated the tight junction proteins ZO-1 and occludin. In DSS-induced UC mice, ceAF treatment alleviated weight loss, colon shortening, and disease activity, while improving histopathology, crypt depth, and colonic fibrosis. Mechanistically, ceAF's anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by inhibiting the overactivation of TCR signaling through the LCK/ZAP70/LAT pathway. Our findings suggest that ceAF could be a valuable nutritional intervention for UC, potentially enhancing existing functional foods aimed at managing this condition.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to chronic inflammatory disorders of the gut. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are two subtypes of IBD. Evidence suggests that the intestinal microbiota plays a role in the pathogenesis of IBD, so probiotics have garnered a lot of interest as a potential treatment or prevention for IBD. However, clinical evidence of the efficacy of probiotics is still debatable. We performed a literature review. An advanced search considered clinical studies on probiotic for IBD from inception to 2023 in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. In the treatment of UC with probiotics, only Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 for maintenance treatment of UC in remission, and Bifidobacterium and VSL#3 for induction of remission in patients with mild to moderately active UC have shown strong evidence. Currently, there are no definitive conclusions regarding the effectiveness of probiotics in CD. The mechanism of probiotic treatment for IBD may be related to reducing oxidative stress, repairing the intestinal barrier, regulating intestinal flora balance, and modulating intestinal immune response. Differences in the benefits of probiotics between CD and UC may be attributable to the different lesion extent and immune-mediated pathophysiology. More robust randomized clinical trials are required to validate the efficacy and safety of diverse probiotic strains in IBD.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is a chronic, immune-mediated disorder that impacts the gastrointestinal tract. Significant advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD have been made during the past few decades, improving patient outcomes. This narrative review aims to provide an overview of recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD. Both from an evaluative and therapeutic standpoint, the management of IBD has undergone significant change. The standard of treatment for treating UC and CD patients has changed due to several medical developments. These developments include amino-salicylates, immunosuppressants, biological agents, and new therapeutics. The review also addresses the difficulties in applying these developments in clinical practice. Globally, the prevalence of IBD is rising, with Asia among the regions with the highest rates. These environments provide particular difficulties, such as poor disease knowledge, a lack of diagnostic services, and infectious IBD mimics. These issues must be resolved to diagnose and manage IBD in these populations accurately. New imaging modalities and other improvements in diagnostic methods have increased the precision and early identification of IBD. To reduce problems and improve patient outcomes, healthcare professionals treating patients with IBD must work effectively as a team. An extensive summary of current developments in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD is given in this narrative review. It draws attention to the therapeutic possibilities, difficulties, and uncertainties of integrating these developments into clinical practice. By keeping up with these changes, healthcare practitioners can better care for patients with IBD and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
FODMAPs are fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols. The application of homofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) has been investigated as a promising approach for producing low-FODMAP whole-wheat bread. The low-FODMAP diet is recommended to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Wheat flour is staple to many diets and is a significant source of fructans, which are considered FODMAPs. The reduction of fructans via sourdough fermentation, generally associated with heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB), often leads to the accumulation of other FODMAPs. A collection of 244 wild-type LAB strains was isolated from different environments and their specific FODMAP utilisation profiles established. Three homofermentative strains were selected for production of whole-wheat sourdough bread. These were Lactiplantibacillus plantarum FST1.7 (FST1.7), Lacticaseibacillus paracasei R3 (R3), and Pediococcus pentosaceus RYE106 (RYE106). Carbohydrate levels in flour, sourdoughs (before and after 48 h fermentation), and resulting breads were analysed via HPAEC-PAD and compared with whole-wheat bread leavened with baker’s yeast. While strain R3 was the most efficient in FODMAP reduction, breads produced with all three test strains had FODMAP content below cut-off levels that would trigger IBS symptoms. Results of this study highlighted the potential of homofermentative LAB in producing low-FODMAP whole-wheat bread.

Abstract
Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract affecting millions of patients worldwide. The gut microbiome partly determines the pathogenesis of both diseases. Even though probiotics have been widely used as a potential treatment, their efficacy in inducing and maintaining remission is still controversial. Our study aims to review the present-day literature about the possible role of probiotics in treating inflammatory bowel diseases in adults. This research was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We included studies concerning adult patients who compared probiotics with placebo or non-probiotic intervention. We identified thirty-three studies, including 2713 patients from fourteen countries. The role of probiotics in Crohn's disease was examined in eleven studies. Only four studies presented statistically significant results in the remission of disease, primarily when used for three to six months. On the other hand, in twenty-one out of twenty-five studies, probiotics proved effective in achieving or maintaining remission in ulcerative colitis. Supplementation with Bifidobacterium sp. or a combination of probiotics is the most effective intervention, especially when compared with a placebo. There is strong evidence supporting the usage of probiotic supplementation in patients with ulcerative colitis, yet more research is needed to justify their efficacy in Crohn's disease.

Ganoderma lucidum Ethanol Extraction Promotes Dextran Sulphate Sodium Induced Colitis Recovery and Modulation in Microbiota. Foods 2022; 11:foods11244023. Abstract
Popular edible mushrooms Ganoderma lucidum and Gloeostereum incarnatum can improve physical health as a prebiotic and positively alter intestinal microbiota. Our research investigated the prebiotic effects of Ganoderma lucidum and Gloeostereum incarnatum on colon inflammation through G. lucidum water extraction polysaccharides (GLP), G. incarnatum water extraction polysaccharides (GIP), G. lucidum ethanol extraction (GLE), and G. incarnatum ethanol extraction (GIE) administered in mice after 7 days of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) administration. Among the extracts, GLE showed reduced mortality rates, prevention of weight loss, mitigated colon length shortening, and decreased disease activity indices and histological scores. COX-2, MPO, and iNOS activities and the inflammatory cytokines' expressions were determined to demonstrate the inhibition inflammation by GLE. Meanwhile, GLE upregulated the levels of MUC2, ZO-1, claudin-3, and occluding to protect the intestinal barrier. Furthermore, GLE modulated the composition of gut microbiota disturbed by DSS, as it decreased the abundance of Bacteroides, Staphylococcus, and Escherichia_Shigella, and increased Turicibacter and Bifidobacterium. Through cell experiment, GLE had a positive influence on adherens junction, tight junction, and TRAF6/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathways. In conclusion, GLE supplementation promotes DSS-induced colitis recovery by regulating inflammatory cytokines, preserving the intestinal mucosal barrier, positively modulating microbiota changes, and positively influences immune response in TRAF6/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathways.

Abstract
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) are chronic, relapsing and disabling diseases that affect the gastrointestinal tract. This relapsing course is often unpredictable with severe flares and the need for intensive medical treatment, hospitalization, or emergent/urgent surgery, all of which significantly impact patients' quality of life (QoL). QoL in IBD patients is significantly lower than in the general population, and depression and anxiety have been shown to have a higher prevalence than in healthy individuals, especially during disease flares. Complications requiring hospitalization and repeated surgeries are not uncommon during the disease course and significantly affect QoL in IBD patients. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can be used to measure the impact of chronic disease on QoL from the patient's perspective. The use of PROMs in IBD patients undergoing surgery could help to investigate the impact of the surgical procedure on QoL and determine whether there is any improvement or worsening. This review summarizes the use of PROMs to assess QoL after various surgical procedures required for IBD treatment.

Abstract
Background Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs) have been emerging in recent years with the advance of global industrialization and diet pattern transformation. Marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), enriched in fish oils, have well-known human health promotion. Evidence on the association of fish oil supplementation with the risk of developing IBDs was scarce. This study aimed to examine the association between the use of fish oil supplements and the risk of developing inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) among the general population. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study of 447,890 participants aged 40-69 years from the UK Biobank. A touch screen questionnaire was used to get the data about fish oil intake at baseline. Incident diagnoses of IBDs were ascertained by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9 and ICD-10) or self-report. Cox proportional hazards model was applied to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing IBDs and their subtypes. Results We documented 1,646 incident cases of IBDs, including 533 incident cases of Crohn's disease (CD) and 1,185 incident cases of ulcerative colitis (UC) during an average of 8 years of follow-up. After multivariate adjustment, the use of fish oil was associated with a 12% lower risk of IBDs (HR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.78-0.99, p = 0.03) compared with non-consumers. For subtypes of IBDs, fish oil supplementation was inversely associated with a 15% lower risk of UC (HR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75-0.99, p = 0.02) but was not correlated with the risk of CD (p = 0.22). Besides, fish oil supplementation showed a significant inverse correlation with baseline CRP levels (β = -0.021, p < 0.001) and a positive association with baseline albumin levels (β = 0.135, p < 0.001) after adjustment for multiple variates. Conclusion Habitual intake of fish oil supplements was associated with a lower risk of IBDs and UC. Fish oil users tended to have lower baseline C-reactive protein levels and higher baseline albumin levels compared with non-users. It was concluded that fish oil supplement use may be recommended for the prevention and control of IBDs.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly affecting the colon and the rectum. Its main characters are represented by relapsing and remitting mucosal inflammation, starting in the rectum and typically extending continuously proximally through part or the entire colon. UC pathogenesis depends on multiple factors, such as genetic predisposition, defects in the epithelial barrier, dysregulated immune responses, and environmental causes. The most frequent symptoms are abdominal pain, weight loss, mucus discharge, bloody diarrhoea, incontinence, nocturnal defecations, fever, and anemia. Existing therapies for UC include 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and its derivatives, steroids, immunosuppressants and biological drugs. However, limited efficacy and unwanted adverse effects hardly limit these strategies of treatment. In the last decades, research studies have been driven towards complementary and alternative medicines for the treatment of UC. Various nutraceuticals have exhibited promising results in modulating intestinal inflammation meanwhile improving symptoms. These compounds possess a wide spectrum of positive health effects evidenced by in vitro studies, characterized by their involvement in antioxidant defenses, cell proliferation, and gene expression. The present review analyzes the available data about the different types of nutraceuticals and their potential effectiveness as adjuvant therapy of IBD, with particular emphasis to UC.

Abstract
Different lines of evidences from clinical, epidemiological and biochemical studies have established that optimal nutrition including probiotic and fruit phenolics can mitigate the risk and morbidity associated with some chronic diseases. The basis for this observation is the potential synergies that may exist between probiotic strains and different bioactive components of food matrices. This study was conceptualized to compare the efficiency of a probiotic strain in two different fruit matrices. Two fruits, viz., sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) (SBT) and apples (Malus pumila) (APJ) were chosen and the anti-inflammatory effects of L. rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) (LR) fortified in SBT and APJ were analysed against dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) induced colitis in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The results showed that administration of probiotic (LR) fortified, malt supplemented SBT beverage (SBT + M + LR) had better restorative potential on the intestinal barrier function and mucosal damage, in comparison to LR fortified, malt supplemented APJ beverage (APJ + M + LR). SBT + M + LR demonstrated adequate anti-oxidant potential by enhancing the CAT, SOD, GPx and GSH activities, impaired due to DSS administration. The increase in the expressions of toll like receptor (TLR)-2, TLR-4 and TLR-5 induced by DSS were significantly inhibited by SBT + M + LR administration. Gene expression of pro-inflammatory markers, (NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, CCL20, MPO and MMP9) were attenuated by SBT + M + LR treatment in intestinal tissues of DSS-treated zebrafishes. Notably, SBT + M + LR increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10. The study provides evidence that specific interactions between fruit matrix and probiotic strain can provide adjunct therapeutic strategy to manage intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe chronic inflammatory disorders related to a substantial reduction in the quality of life of patients. Some patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are refractory to conventional therapies, and Curcuma longa derivatives have been considered as adjuvants. Owing to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, some clinical trials used this plant in the therapeutic approach of IBD, and some meta-analyses evaluated the outcomes found in these studies. Owing to controversial findings, our systematic review aimed to evaluate these studies to show whether C. longa compounds can still be considered in the therapeutic approach of patients with CD and UC. MEDLINE-PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane were searched, and Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. The results of the randomized clinical trials (RCTs) showed promising results with the use of curcumin in the therapeutic approach of both UC and CD patients. Some meta-analyses show controversial results, possibly due to the presence of bias in the included studies. The actions of curcumin are achieved by several mechanisms, such as reducing the expression of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor-α. Moreover, it reduces the levels of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide anions and malondialdehyde. The results of using curcumin in CD and UC patients are challenging to be evaluated because RCTs are variable in the dose and the formulations of curcumin, in the time of treatment, and the route of administration. The number of patients in the samples is also usually small.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic relapsing disease. Multiple factors can cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including diet, imbalance of the immune system, and impaired intestinal barrier function. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex and chronic metabolic disease caused by a combination of insulin resistance and an ineffective insulin secretory response. The co-occurrence of these two diseases, demonstrating interrelated effects within the gut microbiota, has been frequently reported. This study evaluated the effects of a fermented glycated conjugate of whey protein and galactose with Lactobacillus gasseri 4M13 (FMRP) to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus with inflammatory bowel disease. C57BLKS/J- db/db mice were orally administered FMRP for 14 consecutive days and 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in water ad libitum for 5 days to induce colitis. FMRP-fed mice showed improved insulin secretion and symptoms of colitis. Compared to the DSS group, the FMRP group showed a decreased abundance of six bacterial genera and increased abundance of Alistipes and Hungateiclostridium. In cecal contents, the levels of short-chain fatty acids increased in the FMRP group compared to those in the DSS group. Continuous administration of FMRP thus may improve the homeostasis of not only insulin secretion and inflammation, but also the intestinal environment in inflammatory bowel disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Synbiotic yogurt containing konjac mannan oligosaccharides and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis BB12 alleviates constipation in mice by modulating the stem cell factor (SCF)/c-Kit pathway and gut microbiota. Abstract
Synbiotic dietary supplements, as an effective means of regulating the gut microbiota, may have a beneficial effect on constipation. This study evaluated the effects of synbiotic yogurt containing konjac mannan oligosaccharides (KMOS) and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis BB12 (BB12) on constipated Kunming mice (the model group). Following administration of yogurt containing 2.0% KMOS and BB12 (YBK2.0), black fecal weight and number and gastrointestinal transit rate increased by 97.5, 106.3, and 55.7%, respectively, compared with the model group. Serum levels of excitability neurotransmitters (motilin, substance P, and acetylcholine) in the YBK2.0 group were increased by 139.7, 120.4, and 91.8%, respectively, and serum levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters (vasoactive intestinal peptide, nitric oxide, and acetylcholine) were decreased. Moreover, synbiotic yogurt supplementation significantly downregulated the expression of vasoactive intestinal peptide receptor 1 (VIPR1) and upregulated the expression of serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) in the colon, and enhanced the expression of the stem cell factor (SCF)/c-Kit pathway. Additionally, YBK2.0 treatment significantly regulated the community composition and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways of gut microbiota, which were positively correlated with physiological parameters of constipation. Thus, supplementation with synbiotic yogurt composed of KMOS and BB12 could facilitate fecal excretion by regulating related pathways and the gut microbiota. These findings demonstrated that the synbiotic yogurt can be considered a functional food for alleviating constipation.

Abstract
Polyphenols (PPs) are the naturally occurring bioactive components in fruits and vegetables, and they are the most abundant antioxidant in the human diet. Studies are suggesting that ingestion of PPs might be helpful to ameliorate metabolic syndromes that may contribute in the prevention of several chronic disorders like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and colon cancer. PPs have structural diversity which impacts their bioavailability as they accumulate in the large intestine and are extensively metabolized through gut microbiota (GM). Intestinal microbiota transforms PPs into their metabolites to make them bioactive. Interestingly, not only GM act on PPs to metabolize them but PPs also modulate the composition of GM. Thus, change in GM from pathogenic to beneficial ones may be helpful to ameliorate gut health and associated diseases. However, to overcome the low bioavailability of PPs, various approaches have been developed to improve their solubility and transportation through the gut. In this review, we present evidence supporting the structural changes that occur after metabolic reactions in PPs (curcumin, quercetin, and catechins) and their effect on GM composition that leads to improving overall gut health and helping to ameliorate metabolic disorders.

Abstract
The 1991 Persian Gulf War veterans presented a myriad of symptoms that ranged from chronic pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal disturbances, and cognitive deficits. Currently, no therapeutic regimen exists to treat the plethora of chronic symptoms though newer pharmacological targets such as microbiome have been identified recently. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) antagonism in systemic inflammatory diseases have been tried before with limited success, but strategies with broad-spectrum TLR4 antagonists and their ability to modulate the host-microbiome have been elusive. Using a mouse model of Gulf War Illness, we show that a nutraceutical, derived from a Chinese herb Sparstolonin B (SsnB) presented a unique microbiome signature with an increased abundance of butyrogenic bacteria. SsnB administration restored a normal tight junction protein profile with an increase in Occludin and a parallel decrease in Claudin 2 and inflammatory mediators high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the distal intestine. SsnB also decreased neuronal inflammation by decreasing IL-1β and HMGB1, while increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), with a parallel decrease in astrocyte activation in vitro. Mechanistically, SsnB inhibited the binding of HMGB1 and myeloid differentiation primary response protein (MyD88) to TLR4 in the intestine, thus attenuating TLR4 downstream signaling. Studies also showed that SsnB was effective in suppressing TLR4-induced nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation, a prominent inflammatory disease pathway. SsnB significantly decreased astrocyte activation by decreasing colocalization of glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B), a crucial event in neuronal inflammation. Inactivation of SsnB by treating the parent molecule by acetate reversed the deactivation of NLRP3 inflammasome and astrocytes in vitro, suggesting that SsnB molecular motifs may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a result of a complex interaction between host immune response, the gut microbiome and environmental factors, such as diet. Although scientific advances, with the use of biological medications, have revolutionized IBD treatment, the challenge for maintaining clinical remission and delaying clinical relapse is still present. As exclusive enteral nutrition has become a well-established treatment for the induction of remission in pediatric Crohn's disease, the scientific interest regarding diet in IBD is now focused on the development of follow-on dietary strategies, which aim to suppress colonic inflammation and delay a disease flare. The objective of this review is to present an extensive overview of the dietary strategies, which have been used in the literature to maintain clinical remission in both Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis, and the evidence surrounding the association of dietary components with clinical relapse. We also aim to provide study-related recommendations to be encompassed in future research studies aiming to investigate the role of diet during remission periods in IBD.
