Abstract
Background Sarcopenia has emerged as a global health concern, but the association between dietary vitamin levels and sarcopenia is not elucidated. This study aims to shed light on the link of 11 dietary vitamins to the risk of sarcopenia in adults at the age of 20-59. Methods This cross-sectional study encompassed 2011-2018 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for adults aged 20-59. Sarcopenia was defined through the appendicular lean mass to body mass index ratio calculated via Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), with sarcopenia determined as a ratio of <0.789 for the male and <0.512 for the female. Multivariate weighted logistic regression assisted in assessing the connection of dietary vitamins with sarcopenia, with results presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The dose-response association of various vitamins with sarcopenia was visualized through restricted cubic splines (RCS). Subgroup analyses were carried out to examine the consistency of the aforementioned associations. Sensitivity analysis was performed utilizing propensity score matching (PSM) to adjust for confounding factors and enhance the robustness of the results. Results Among the 7,864 participants, 677 (8.6%) had sarcopenia, and 7,187 (91.4%) did not. Multivariate weighted logistic regression and RCS analyses indicated that higher intakes of VA, VB1, VB2, VB3, VB6, VB9, VB12, VC, VE, and VK were notably linked to a lowered risk of sarcopenia (P < 0.05). Among these, VA, VC, and VE exhibited a non-linear negative association with sarcopenia risk (P for non-linear < 0.05), while VB1, VB2, VB3, VB6, VB9, VB12, and VK exhibited a linear negative association (P for non-linear > 0.05). Subgroup analysis yielded largely consistent results. After confounding factors were adjusted through PSM, the results suggest that the intake of VA, VB2, VB6, and VC remains significantly associated with a lowered risk of sarcopenia (P < 0.05). Conclusion Higher dietary levels of VA, VB2, VB6, and VC are significantly related to a lower livelihood of sarcopenia. These findings provide new evidence and insights for early dietary interventions aimed at preventing sarcopenia.

Abstract
Sarcopenia has become a critical health concern in the global older population. However, limited studies have investigated the epidemiological characteristics and potential risk factors of sarcopenia in older individuals residing in rural coastal areas of China. This cross-sectional study involving sarcopenia screening was conducted in Ningbo City, including body composition measurements, and questionnaire surveys. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the criteria outlined in the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 Consensus. A total of 902 older adults aged ≥ 60 years (average age: 69.76 years) were included using a two-stage random sampling method from three villages in Ningbo. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 11.53%, with men (16.36%) exhibiting higher rates than women (7.93%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified age (odds ratio [OR]: 6.708, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.520-17.855), stroke (OR: 9.232, 95% CI: 1.917-44.447), and waist circumference (OR: 1.095, 95% CI: 1.030-1.165) as factors positively correlated with the occurrence of sarcopenia. Conversely, body mass index (OR: 0.347, 95% CI: 0.270-0.445) was negatively correlated with sarcopenia development. These findings underscore the need for specific health education, the collaborative prevention of comorbidities, and active screening for sarcopenia in the older population to reduce its disease burden.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: As a result of aging societies, the increasing number of older adults requiring nursing care has become a serious issue and the extension of healthy life expectancy has become an urgent priority. Ergothioneine (EGT) is a sulfur-containing amino acid found in foods such as mushrooms. Low EGT blood concentrations have been reported to be associated with the risk of onset and progression of various diseases. However, the distribution of EGT blood concentrations and their association with dietary habits in the Japanese general population remains unclear. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the third survey of the Research on Osteoarthritis/osteoporosis Against Disability (ROAD) study, which analyzed 1457 participants (474 men and 983 women) aged ≥ 40 years. Serum EGT concentrations and their association with dietary habits were analyzed. Results: Serum EGT concentrations (1) peaked in the 70s in men and the 60s in women, (2) were higher in women than in men, and (3) showed a significant positive correlation with fish intake and nutrients commonly found in fish. Conclusions: In the present study, we report for the first time an age- and sex-specific serum EGT distribution in a Japanese population and its association with dietary habits, particularly fish intake. These findings help define normal and abnormal EGT levels and suggest new potential sources of EGT.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a progressive systemic skeletal muscle disease induced by various physiological and pathological factors, including aging, malnutrition, denervation, and cardiovascular diseases, manifesting as the decline of skeletal muscle mass and function. Both exercise and nutrition produce beneficial effects on skeletal muscle growth and are viewed as feasible strategies to prevent sarcopenia. Mechanisms involve regulating blood flow, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, protein synthesis and degradation, and satellite cell activation through exerkines and gut microbiomes. In this review, we summarized and discussed the latest progress and future development of the above mechanisms for providing a theoretical basis and ideas for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It remains unknown whether composite-dietary-antioxidant-index (CDAI) is associated with the risk of sarcopenia. This study investigated the association of CDAI with sarcopenia risk among general US adults. METHODS A total of 10,093 participants were enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 6 survey cycles (2003-2004, 2005-2006, 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016 and 2017-2018). Multivariate logistic regression was carried out to examine the relationship between CDAI and the risk of sarcopenia. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were employed to analyze nonlinear relationships. RESULTS In a multi-variable logistic regression model adjusting for demographics, lifestyle, economic status and other dietary factors, higher CDAI score was related to a lower risk of sarcopenia among US adults. Compared the highest quartile of CDAI score with the lowest, the OR and 95%CI were 0.49 (0.31-0.75). Furthermore, the RCS demonstrated a linear dose-response relationship between CDAI and sarcopenia (P non-linearity=0.92). These results remained consistent across subgroups stratified by age, sex, physical activity, drinking status, body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, energy intake, and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) score. In addition, the favorable associations of CDAI were primarily attributed to Vitamin E intake. CONCLUSION A higher CDAI score was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. According to these results, a greater adherence to CDAI may benefit sarcopenia prevention in adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc (Zn) deficiency, malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty are prevalent among older adults and are prominent factors contributing to disability and mortality. OBJECTIVE This scoping review was conducted to aid understanding of the extent and types of research addressing the role of Zn in nutritional status, sarcopenia, and frailty, among older individuals. METHOD A systematic search was performed in August 2022 of 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest) using predefined search terms. The review was conducted referring to the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR. RESULTS The search retrieved 16 018 records, and a total of 49 studies were included in this review after the screening. Of those, 30 were based on dietary Zn intake, 18 on tissue Zn levels, and 1 on both. Most studies were based on cross-sectional data from community-dwelling older adults. Studies addressing the associations between Zn status and individual anthropometric and sarcopenia-related variables reported inconsistent results. However, most studies reported inverse associations between malnutrition, frailty, and Zn status. CONCLUSION There was more consistent evidence of the relationship of Zn status with malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty rather than with individual nutritional parameters. Validated screening and assessment tools and criteria and prospective studies are required to elucidate the relationship of Zn with sarcopenia and frailty in the older population.

Abstract
This article focuses on a range of non-pharmacological strategies for managing sarcopenia in chronic diseases, including exercise, dietary supplements, traditional Chinese exercise, intestinal microecology, and rehabilitation therapies for individuals with limited limb movement. By analyzing multiple studies, the article aims to summarize the available evidence to manage sarcopenia in individuals with chronic diseases. The results strongly emphasize the role of resistance training in addressing chronic diseases and secondary sarcopenia. Maintaining the appropriate frequency and intensity of resistance training can help prevent muscle atrophy and effectively reduce inflammation. Although aerobic exercise has limited ability to improve skeletal muscle mass, it does have some positive effects on physical function. Building upon this, the article explores the potential benefits of combined training approaches, highlighting their helpfulness for overall quality of life. Additionally, the article also highlights the importance of dietary supplements in combating muscle atrophy in chronic diseases. It focuses on the importance of protein intake, supplements rich in essential amino acids and omega-3, as well as sufficient vitamin D to prevent muscle atrophy. Combining exercise with dietary supplements appears to be an effective strategy for preventing sarcopenia, although the optimal dosage and type of supplement remain unclear. Furthermore, the article explores the potential benefits of intestinal microecology in sarcopenia. Probiotics, prebiotics, and bacterial products are suggested as new treatment options for sarcopenia. Additionally, emerging therapies such as whole body vibration training, blood flow restriction, and electrical stimulation show promise in treating sarcopenia with limited limb movement. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into non-pharmacological strategies for managing sarcopenia in individuals with chronic diseases. It emphasizes the importance of a holistic and integrated approach that incorporates exercise, nutrition, and multidisciplinary interventions, which have the potential to promote health in the elderly population. Future research should prioritize high-quality randomized controlled trials and utilize wearable devices, smartphone applications, and other advanced surveillance methods to investigate the most effective intervention strategies for sarcopenia associated with different chronic diseases.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle can undergo detrimental changes in various diseases, leading to muscle dysfunction and atrophy, thus severely affecting people's lives. Along with exercise, there is a growing interest in the potential of nutritional support against muscle atrophy. This review provides a brief overview of the molecular mechanisms driving skeletal muscle atrophy and summarizes recent advances in nutritional interventions for preventing and treating muscle atrophy. The nutritional supplements include amino acids and their derivatives (such as leucine, β-hydroxy, β-methylbutyrate, and creatine), various antioxidant supplements (like Coenzyme Q10 and mitoquinone, resveratrol, curcumin, quercetin, Omega 3 fatty acids), minerals (such as magnesium and selenium), and vitamins (such as vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E), as well as probiotics and prebiotics (like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and 1-kestose). Furthermore, the study discusses the impact of a combined approach involving nutritional support and physical therapy to prevent muscle atrophy, suggests appropriate multi-nutritional and multi-modal interventions based on individual conditions to optimize treatment outcomes, and enhances the recovery of muscle function for patients. By understanding the molecular mechanisms behind skeletal muscle atrophy and implementing appropriate interventions, it is possible to enhance the recovery of muscle function and improve patients' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia can lead to a series of unfavourable health outcomes. Diet is an important factor influencing sarcopenia. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of sarcopenia with diet quality assessed by the Chinese Diet Balance Index 2016 (DBI-16). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect information on nutrition and health in Henan Province, China, and a total of 644 individuals were studied. Sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria updated in 2019. Diet quality was assessed by using the Chinese Diet Balance Index 2016 (DBI-16), which includes three indicators: the lower bound score (LBS), higher bound score (HBS) and diet quality distance (DQD). Binary logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the risk of sarcopenia associated with diet quality. RESULTS A total of 49 of the 644 participants were diagnosed with sarcopenia. Excessive intake (score > 0) of cereals, meat, eggs and salt, inadequate intake (score < 0) of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, soybeans and low diet variety were commonly seen in both groups of participants. The participants with sarcopenia had a more serious inadequate intake of fruit than those without sarcopenia (p < 0.05). The overall LBS, HBS and DQD in both groups were in the interval of low-level problems. Compared with participants with a suitable LBS, those with an unsuitable LBS were more likely to have a low gait speed (OR: 2.58; 95%CI: 1.13-7.04) after multiple adjustments. However, the other two DBI-16 indicators, the HBS and DQD, were not associated with sarcopenia or its related diagnostic variables. CONCLUSION Unfavourable diet quality, mainly referring to inadequate dietary intake in this study, may be a risk factor for low gait speed.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is characterized by a gradual slowing of movement due to loss of muscle mass and quality, decreased power and strength, increased risk of injury from falls, and often weakness. This review will focus on recent research trends in nutritional and pharmacological approaches to controlling sarcopenia. Because nutritional studies in humans are fairly limited, this paper includes many results from nutritional studies in mammals. The combination of resistance training with supplements containing amino acids is the gold standard for preventing sarcopenia. Amino acid (HMB) supplementation alone has no significant effect on muscle strength or muscle mass in sarcopenia, but the combination of HMB and exercise (whole body vibration stimulation) is likely to be effective. Tea catechins, soy isoflavones, and ursolic acid are interesting candidates for reducing sarcopenia, but both more detailed basic research on this treatment and clinical studies in humans are needed. Vitamin D supplementation has been shown not to improve sarcopenia in elderly individuals who are not vitamin D-deficient. Myostatin inhibitory drugs have been tried in many neuromuscular diseases, but increases in muscle mass and strength are less likely to be expected. Validation of myostatin inhibitory antibodies in patients with sarcopenia has been positive, but excessive expectations are not warranted.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that fatty acids (FAs) play an essential role in regulating skeletal muscle mass and function throughout life. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the relationship between dietary or circulatory levels of monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) and sarcopenia in observational studies. A comprehensive literature search was performed in three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) from inception until August 2022. Of 414 records, a total of 12 observational studies were identified for this review. Ten studies were meta-analysed, comprising a total of 3704 participants. The results revealed that MUFA intake is inversely associated with sarcopenia (standardized mean difference = - 0.28, 95% CI - 0.46 to - 0.11; p < 0.01). Despite the limited number of studies, our results suggest that lower MUFA intake is associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia. However, the available evidence is still insufficient and further investigations are needed to demonstrate this relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In adults, short and long sleep duration has been associated with sarcopenia risk. Studies have shown that various factors, including biological and psychological factors, could be the underlying cause of the association between aberrant sleep duration and sarcopenia risk. In this study, we have qualitatively and quantitatively summarized previously published studies on sleep duration to assess the relationship between sleep duration and sarcopenia risk in adults. This would aid in enhancing our understanding of recent advancements in this field and the association between sleep duration and sarcopenia risk. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS In this review, we included studies evaluating the association between the duration of sleep and sarcopenia in adults in observational studies. METHODS Five electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Web of Science) were searched to April 20, 2023, to identify studies related to sarcopenia and sleep duration. Next, we calculated the odds ratios (ORs) for sarcopenia prevalence based on the adjusted data from individual studies. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata 11.0. RESULTS Sarcopenia prevalence was high (18%) in adults with long sleep duration. Our results showed a significant association between short duration of sleep and high sarcopenia prevalence in older adults (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.02-1.41, I2 = 56.6%). Furthermore, a significant association was observed between all participants with long-duration sleep and high sarcopenia prevalence (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.34-1.75, I2 = 56.8%). We also observed significant heterogeneity in the adjusted ORs. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS There was a correlation between sarcopenia and short or long sleep duration, especially in older adults. In adults with a long duration of sleep, sarcopenia prevalence was relatively high.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by a decline in muscular mass, strength, and function with advancing age. The risk of falls, fragility, hospitalization, and death is considerably increased in the senior population due to sarcopenia. Although there is no conclusive evidence for drug treatment, resistance training has been unanimously recognized as a first-line treatment for managing sarcopenia, and numerous studies have also pointed to the combination of nutritional supplementation and resistance training as a more effective intervention to improve quality of life for people with sarcopenia. People with both malnutrition and sarcopenia have a higher mortality rate, so identifying people at risk of malnutrition and intervening early is extremely important to avoid sarcopenia and its associated problems. This article provides important information for dietary interventions in sarcopenia by summarizing the discoveries and developments of nutritional supplements such as protein, leucine, β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyric acid, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, creatine, inorganic nitrate, probiotics, minerals, collagen peptides, and polyphenols in the management of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Muscle wasting occurs with aging and may be a result of oxidative stress damage and potentially inadequate protection by lipophilic antioxidants, such as vitamin E. Previous studies have shown muscular abnormalities and behavioral defects in vitamin E-deficient adult zebrafish. To test the hypothesis that there is an interaction between muscle degeneration caused by aging and oxidative damage caused by vitamin E deficiency, we evaluated long-term vitamin E deficiency in the skeletal muscle of aging zebrafish using metabolomics. Zebrafish (55 days old) were fed E+ and E- diets for 12 or 18 months. Then, skeletal muscle samples were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. Data were analyzed to highlight metabolite and pathway changes seen with either aging or vitamin E status or both. We found that aging altered purines, various amino acids, and DHA-containing phospholipids. Vitamin E deficiency at 18 months was associated with changes in amino acid metabolism, specifically tryptophan pathways, systemic changes in the regulation of purine metabolism, and DHA-containing phospholipids. In sum, while both aging and induced vitamin E deficiency did have some overlap in altered and potentially dysregulated metabolic pathways, each factor also presented unique alterations, which require further study with more confirmatory approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the prevalence and impact of related factors for sarcopenia among community-dwelling older people in Chongming district, China, according to the diagnostic criteria of the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia-2019. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study from April 2021 to December 2021. Diagnosis of sarcopenia (non-sarcopenia, possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and severe sarcopenia) was based on appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, handgrip strength, gait speed, and the 5-time chair stand test. Staff collected all subjects' clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, inflammatory markers, physical activity (PA), and daily lifestyle activities to identify sarcopenia-related factors. RESULTS A total of 1407 older people aged ≥ 65 years were enrolled into the study (58.7% female). The prevalence of confirmed sarcopenia was 19.6% (17.1% in females and 23.1% in males). The prevalence of possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and severe sarcopenia were 19.7% (22.2% in females, 16.2% in males), 11.9% (10.1% in females, 14.5% in males), and 7.7% (7% in females, 8.6% in males), respectively. Increasing age, gender, depression status, and high-fat mass were associated with an increased likelihood of sarcopenia in all subjects. In females, living alone, high-fat mass, lower body mass index (BMI), lower body weight, and have no time spent doing housework increased the likelihood of sarcopenia. In males, depression status, high-fat mass, higher neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio (NLR), lower BMI, lower body weight increased the likelihood of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION Our study showed a high prevalence of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older people in the Chongming district. Detection, prevention, and treatment efforts are needed to reduce the impact of sarcopenia in older, rural communities in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Vitamin E is essential for health, and although vitamin E deficiency seems rare in humans, studies on estimates of dietary intake are lacking. This study aimed to estimate dietary vitamin E intake, evaluate dietary adequacy of vitamin E, and detail major food sources of vitamin E in the Korean population. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2019. Individuals aged ≥ 1 year that participated in a nutrition survey (n = 28,418) were included. Dietary intake was assessed by 24-h recall and individual dietary vitamin E intake was estimated using a newly established vitamin E database. Dietary adequacy was evaluated by comparing dietary intake with adequate intake (AI) as defined by Korean Dietary Reference Intakes 2020. RESULTS For all study subjects, mean daily total vitamin E intake was 7.00 mg α-tocopherol equivalents, which was 61.6% of AI. The proportion of individuals that consumed vitamin E at above the AI was 12.9%. Inadequate intake was observed more in females, older individuals, rural residents, and those with a low income. Mean daily intakes of tocopherol (α-, β-, γ-, and δ-forms) and tocotrienol were 6.02, 0.30, 6.19, 1.63, and 1.61 mg, respectively. The major food groups that contributed to total dietary vitamin E intake were grains (22.3%), seasonings (17.0%), vegetables (15.3%), and fish, and shellfish (7.4%). The top 5 individual food items that contributed to total vitamin E intake were baechu kimchi, red pepper powder, eggs, soybean oil, and rice. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that mean dietary vitamin E intake by Koreans did not meet the reference adequate intake value. To better understand the status of vitamin E intake, further research is needed that considers intake from dietary supplements.

Abstract
General muscle health declines with age, and in particular, sarcopenia-defined as progressive loss of muscle mass and strength/physical performance-is a growing issue in Asia with a rising population of community-dwelling older adults. Several guidelines have addressed early identification of sarcopenia and management, and although nutrition is central to treatment of sarcopenia, there are currently few guidelines that have examined this specifically in the Asian population. Therefore, the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia established a special interest group (SIG) comprising seven experts across Asia and one from Australia, to develop an evidence-based expert consensus. A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE on the topic of muscle health, from 2016 (inclusive) to July 2021, in Asia or with relevance to healthy, Asian community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years old). Several key topics were identified: (1) nutritional status: malnutrition and screening; (2) diet and dietary factors; (3) nutritional supplementation; (4) lifestyle interventions plus nutrition; and (5) outcomes and assessment. Clinical questions were developed around these topics, leading to 14 consensus statements. Consensus was achieved using the modified Delphi method with two rounds of voting. Moreover, the consensus addressed the impacts of COVID-19 on nutrition, muscle health, and sarcopenia in Asia. These statements encompass clinical expertise and knowledge across Asia and are aligned with findings in the current literature, to provide a practical framework for addressing muscle health in the community, with the overall aim to encourage and facilitate broader access to equitable care for this target population.

Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the relationship between dietary omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) levels and sarcopenia. Methods: A comprehensive literature search in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase (up to July 2021) were conducted to identify the observational studies on the relationship between dietary omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs level and sarcopenia. The pooled odds ratio (OR) of sarcopenia for the highest vs. lowest dietary omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs level and the standard mean difference (SMD) of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs levels for sarcopenia vs. control subjects were calculated. Results: A total of six studies were identified in this meta-analysis. The overall multi-variable adjusted OR showed that dietary omega-3 PUFAs level was inversely associated with sarcopenia (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.26-0.65; P = 0.0001). Moreover, the overall combined SMD showed that the dietary omega-3 PUFAs level in sarcopenia was lower than that in control subjects (SMD = -0.19, 95% CI: -0.32 to -0.07; P = 0.002). With regard to dietary omega-6 PUFAs level, the overall multi-variable adjusted OR suggested no significant relationship between dietary omega-6 PUFAs level and sarcopenia (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.33-1.24; P = 0.19). However, the overall combined SMD showed that the dietary omega-6 PUFAs level in sarcopenia was slightly lower than that in control subjects (SMD = -0.15, 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.02; P = 0.02). Conclusion: Our results suggested that the dietary omega-3 PUFAs level was inversely associated with sarcopenia. However, current evidence is still insufficient to demonstrate the definite relationship between dietary omega-6 PUFAs levels and sarcopenia. More well-designed prospective cohort studies with the dietary omega-3/omega-6 PUFAs ratio are still needed.
