Abstract
Sarcopenia, or 'frailty of the elderly', is a condition of low muscle mass which is prevalent in older adults and post-menopausal women, leading to falls or worsening after falls. Age-related muscle thinning contributes to falls and fractures. Fractures lead to downward spiral toward the loss of independence in the elderly and ultimately, increased health care expenditures of approximately 4 billion pounds a year. The diagnosis of sarcopenia is based on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Sarcopenia is caused by imbalance between the anabolic and catabolic processes on the protein production pathway, as well as a decrease in satellite cells. Denervation, inflammation, hormonal changes, and mitochondrial decline further complicate the issue. Is it time that physicians begin to rethink the diagnosis of sarcopenia or frailty as a process that begins in mid-life? In women, it begins in menopause and ends with falls, fractures, or immobility due to weakness. Physicians often question which came first; frailty causing the fall or the fall worsening frailty, which leads to challenges in treatment. Sarcopenia treatment involves resistance training, appropriate diet and being proactive about the diagnosis. These low-risk lifestyle interventions should be recommended during mid-life well woman visits. Physicians can influence the outcomes of sarcopenia simply by providing an exercise prescription, supplement, and diet recommendation in early menopause. This article aims to change the thinking around sarcopenia from an 'end stage' diagnosis to a mid-life discussion around disease prevention and maintenance of health and muscle.

Abstract
Importance Understanding the effects of diet and physical activity on bone health may help to mitigate concomitant weight loss- and age-related bone deterioration. Objective To evaluate the effects of a weight-loss lifestyle intervention on bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and low BMD prevalence. Design, Setting, and Participants The 3-year, parallel-group Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea-Plus (PREDIMED-Plus) randomized clinical trial was conducted at recruiting centers in Spain from October 2013 to December 2016. Men and women (aged 55-75 years) with metabolic syndrome and overweight or obesity, as well as access to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (from 4 centers in Navarra, Mallorca, Reus, and León), were included in this prespecified secondary analysis. The analysis was conducted from September 1 to October 30, 2024. Intervention Participants were randomly allocated (1:1) to the intervention or the control. The intervention group followed an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet and increased physical activity, whereas the control group was advised to follow an ad libitum Mediterranean diet with no physical activity promotion. Main Outcomes and Measures BMD (total femur, lumbar spine [L1-L4], and femoral trochanter) and total BMC were measured using DXA at baseline and at 1 and 3 years of follow-up. T scores from BMD variables were determined, and osteopenia or osteoporosis status was defined as low BMD. Linear and logistic 2-level mixed models were used for main analyses including participants lost to follow-up. Intention-to-treat analysis, completers case analysis, and sensitivity analysis were additionally performed. Results This study included 924 older adults (mean [SD] age, 65.1 [5.0] years; 454 women [49.1%] and 470 men [50.9%]). Significant differences in mean changes between groups were observed, with an overall 3-year intervention increase in the intervention group (n = 460) compared with the control group (n = 464) in lumbar spine (L1-L4) BMD (between-group differences, -0.1 [95% CI, -0.8 to 0.8] g/cm2 after 1 year and 0.9 [95% CI, 0.1-1.8] g/cm2 after 3 years; overall P = .05). This protective association was observed for women (between-group differences, -0.1 [95% CI, -1.3 to 1.1] g/cm2 after 1 year and 1.8 [95% CI, 0.6-2.9] g/cm2 after 3 years; overall P = .005) but not for men. No overall 3-year intervention effect on total BMC and low BMD prevalence was observed. Conclusions and Relevance In the PREDIMED-Plus trial, an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet and physical activity lifestyle intervention mitigated weight loss- and age-related BMD decline among older women with metabolic syndrome compared with conventional ad libitum Mediterranean diet recommendations. Weight-loss lifestyle interventions with longer follow-up are warranted in the future to confirm these results in relation to bone health. Abstract
Renin angiotensin system (RAS) alters various mechanisms related to muscle wasting. The RAS system consists of classical and non-classical pathways, which mostly function differently. Classical RAS pathway, operates through angiotensin II (AngII) and angiotensin type 1 receptors, is associated with muscle wasting and sarcopenia. On the other hand, the non-classical RAS pathway, which operates through angiotensin 1-7 and Mas receptor, is protective against sarcopenia. The classical RAS pathway might induce muscle wasting by variety of mechanisms. AngII reduces body weight, via reduction in food intake, possibly by decreasing hypothalamic expression of orexin and neuropeptide Y, insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), signaling, AngII increases skeletal muscle proteolysis by forkhead box transcription factors (FOXO), caspase activation and muscle RING-finger protein-1 transcription. Furthermore, AngII infusion in skeletal muscle reduces phospho-Bad (Ser136) expression and induces apoptosis through increased cytochrome c release and DNA fragmentation. Additionally, Renin angiotensin system activation through AT1R and AngII stimulates tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6 which induces muscle wasting, Last but not least classical RAS pathway, induce oxidative stress, disturb mitochondrial energy metabolism, and muscle satellite cells which all lead to muscle wasting and decrease muscle regeneration. On the contrary, the non-classical RAS pathway functions oppositely to mitigate these mechanisms and protects against muscle wasting. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of RAS-induced muscle wasting and putative implications for clinical practice. We also emphasize the areas of uncertainties and suggest potential research areas.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is prevalent in older adults and not only severely affects their health, but also brings a greater economic burden on the patient's family as well as society. High-quality diet is one of influencing factors of sarcopenia, particularly important for muscle mass and function. This study aims to examine the dietary patterns of community-dwelling older adults in a typical region of China and explore the relationship between these dietary patterns and sarcopenia. Methods We used data of the Nutrition and Health Follow-up Study of the Chinese Population in 2021. Food frequency questionnaires were used to obtain food items intake frequency during the last year. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), muscle strength and physical performance were assessed according to the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group (AWGS2019) criteria. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify dietary patterns. Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between dietary patterns and sarcopenia. Results A total of 1,967 participants over the age of 65 were included in the study, and the prevalence of sarcopenia was 17.0%. According to the factor loadings of all of the 18 food groups, three dietary patterns were identified. These dietary patterns include the diversified dietary pattern, which is mainly characterized by the intake of soybeans, fungi and algae, animal meat, fruits, and legumes; the traditional dietary pattern, which is mainly defined by the consumption of rice, pork, poultry, vegetables, and aquatic products; and the wheat-based dietary pattern, which is mainly characterized by the intake of wheat, tubers, and other cereals. The diversified dietary pattern (OR = 0.54, p < 0.05) and the traditional dietary pattern (OR = 0.51, p < 0.05) were linked to a lower risk of developing sarcopenia, whereas the wheat-based dietary pattern (OR = 3.54, p < 0.05) was associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia. All three dietary patterns exhibited significantly correlated with muscle mass, grip strength, and physical performance (p < 0.05). Conclusion Dietary patterns are associated with sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults in China. Adopting a healthy and sensible balanced diet and avoiding a single dietary preference may reduce the risk of sarcopenia in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The modified Dietary Inflammation Index Score (M-DIS) is a scoring system used to quantify the inflammatory effects of nutrients and foods. Inflammation may affect Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The purpose of this study was to utilize data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to evaluate the relationship between M-DIS and lumbar vertebrae BMD in patients with hypertension. METHODS Data from 2007 to 2008, 2009-2010, 2013-2014 and 2017-2018 NHANES cycles were collected for secondary analysis. Information provided by NHANES participants included complete dietary intake interviews and BMD measurements. M-DIS was calculated based on dietary intake interviews. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to evaluate the average BMD of lumbar vertebrae (L1-L4). As an indicator of bone health, weighted multiple logistic regression and restricted spline analysis were utilized to study the relationship between M-DIS and lumbar vertebrae BMD in American patients with hypertension. RESULTS A total of 3864 participants aged ≥ 20 years with complete data were included in this study. The proportion of osteopenia in the lumbar spine was 7.2%. After adjusting for confounding factors, negative correlations were observed between the BMD of each vertebral and its average BMD with M-DIS. In Model 3, the relationship between mean lumbar BMD and M-DIS was β = - 0.0103 (95% CI - 0.0160 to - 0.0046, P < 0.001). Notably, L1 showed a particularly significant negative correlation with β = - 0.0120 (95% CI - 0.0172 to - 0.0067, P < 0.001), while the proportion of osteopenia was highest in the L3 vertebra, accounting for 8.3%. Higher M-DIS was positively correlated with the incidence of osteopenia (OR 0.595, 95% CI 0.371-0.965, P = 0.041). Further analyses revealed that in hypertensive patients, elevated M-DIS in women was associated with lower lumbar BMD (P for nonlinearity = 0.093), while this trend was not significant in hypertensive men. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that a higher M-DIS (pro-inflammatory diet) is significantly associated with BMD in females with hypertension. These results indicate that female with hypertension who prefer a pro-inflammatory diet may be at an increased risk of osteopenia, highlighting the necessity for tailored dietary recommendations.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Osteoporosis affects 50% of women and 20% of men after the age of 50. Fractures are associated with significant morbidity, increased mortality and altered quality of life. Lifestyle measures for fragility fracture prevention include good nutrition including adequate protein and calcium intakes, vitamin D sufficiency, and regular weight bearing physical exercise. RECENT FINDINGS Dietary protein is one of the most important nutritional considerations as it affects bone mineral density, trabecular and cortical microstructure, and bone strength. When calcium intake is sufficient, higher dietary protein intake is associated with lower risk of fracture. Dairy products are a valuable source of calcium and high quality protein. Dairy product consumption, particularly fermented dairy products, are associated with a lower risk of hip fracture and vegan diets are associated with increased fracture risk. Other dietary factors associated with reduced fracture risk include at least 5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables, regular tea drinking, adherence to a Mediterranean diet and other dietary patterns which provide fibers, polyphenols and fermented dairy products. Such dietary patterns may confer health benefits through their effect on gut microbiota composition and/or function. A balanced diet including minerals, protein, fruits and vegetables is an important element in the prevention of osteoporosis and of fragility fracture.

Abstract
Lifestyle factors have the potential to influence bone health in various ways, whether positively or negatively. As osteoporosis is believed to originate in early years, it is therefore essential to indicate factors that may positively affect bone health during childhood. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of early and current diet, vitamin D supplementation, and BMI z-score on bone properties in a group of children aged 3-7 years. A cross-sectional sample of 205 preschoolers and their parents participated in the study. Dietary assessment was made using a modified version of the Polish-adapted Mediterranean Diet score (MVP-aMED) on the basis of the data from food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), filled out by the parents. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) was used in the assessment of bone properties. In the sex-stratified analysis, significant associations were observed between MVP-aMED score (β = 0.193, 95 % CI: 0.005, 0.237; p = 0.04), BMI z-score (β = -0.318, 95 % CI: -1.455, -0.039; p = 0.04) and QUS z-score, exclusively among girls. After adjustment, only the relationship with diet remained significant (β = 0.209, 95 % CI: 0.007, 0.255; p = 0.04), suggesting that a higher adherence to the Mediterranean Diet may be associated with better bone properties in girls aged 3-7 years old. Our results emphasize the importance of fostering healthy dietary habits and maintaining proper weight in children in order to promote optimal bone development.

Abstract
CONTEXT Hip fractures are a major public health concern. Understanding their epidemiologic and biological links with diet and cardiovascular risk may have important implications for prevention. OBJECTIVE To assess the dose-response association of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence with the risk of hip fracture. DATA SOURCES A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for prospective studies. Search terms were "Mediterranean Diet" and "Fracture." DATA EXTRACTION Data were extracted from 8 studies, encompassing 15 cohorts that included 503 174 individuals. Methodological quality was assessed using the Risk of Bias in Nonrandomized Studies of Interventions. DATA ANALYSIS The "meta" and "dosresmeta" packages were used in R Studio Software. The results demonstrated that high and moderate MD adherence were associated with a reduced risk of hip fracture (relative risk [RR] = 0.71 [95% CI, 0.55-0.91]; and RR = 0.78[(95% CI, 0.65-0.93], respectively). The effect of the association was similar in men and women. The dose-response pattern of the association was linear: each point increase in MD adherence was associated with a 5.25% reduction in hip fracture risk. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to MD is associated with a reduction in hip fracture risk, following a linear dose-response pattern. This supports the promotion of this dietary pattern for improving bone health. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION PROSPERO registration no. CRD42023402284.

Abstract
Loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass (sarcopenia) is common in older adults and associated with an increased risk of disability, frailty and premature death. Finding cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies for sarcopenia for the growing ageing population is therefore of great public health interest. Although nutrition is considered an important factor in the aetiology of sarcopenia, its potential for sarcopenia prevention and/or treatment is still being evaluated. Nutrition research for sarcopenia utilises three main approaches to understand muscle-nutrition relationships, evaluating: single nutrients, whole foods and whole diet effects - both alone or combined with exercise. Applying these approaches, we summarise recent evidence from qualitative and quantitative syntheses of findings from observational and intervention studies of healthy older adults, and those with sarcopenia. We consider protein supplements, whole foods (fruits and vegetables) and the Mediterranean diet as exemplars. There is some evidence of beneficial effects of protein supplementation ≥ 0·8 g/kg body weight/d on muscle mass when combined with exercise training in intervention studies of healthy and sarcopenic older adults. In contrast, evidence for effects on muscle function (strength and physical performance) is inconclusive. There is reasonably consistent epidemiological evidence suggesting benefits of higher fruits and vegetables consumption for better physical performance. Similarly, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with beneficial effects on muscle function in observational studies. However, intervention studies are lacking. This review discusses how current evidence may inform the development of preventive and intervention strategies for optimal muscle ageing and nutritional public policy aimed at combatting sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It remains unknown whether composite-dietary-antioxidant-index (CDAI) is associated with the risk of sarcopenia. This study investigated the association of CDAI with sarcopenia risk among general US adults. METHODS A total of 10,093 participants were enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 6 survey cycles (2003-2004, 2005-2006, 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016 and 2017-2018). Multivariate logistic regression was carried out to examine the relationship between CDAI and the risk of sarcopenia. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were employed to analyze nonlinear relationships. RESULTS In a multi-variable logistic regression model adjusting for demographics, lifestyle, economic status and other dietary factors, higher CDAI score was related to a lower risk of sarcopenia among US adults. Compared the highest quartile of CDAI score with the lowest, the OR and 95%CI were 0.49 (0.31-0.75). Furthermore, the RCS demonstrated a linear dose-response relationship between CDAI and sarcopenia (P non-linearity=0.92). These results remained consistent across subgroups stratified by age, sex, physical activity, drinking status, body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, energy intake, and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) score. In addition, the favorable associations of CDAI were primarily attributed to Vitamin E intake. CONCLUSION A higher CDAI score was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. According to these results, a greater adherence to CDAI may benefit sarcopenia prevention in adults.

Abstract
The aging of the world population is closely associated with an increased prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis, due to common genetic, endocrine, and mechanical risk factors. These conditions are characterized by degeneration of bone, muscle, and cartilage tissue, resulting in an increased risk of fractures and reduced mobility. Importantly, a crucial role in the pathophysiology of these diseases has been proposed for cellular senescence, a state of irreversible cell cycle arrest induced by factors such as DNA damage, telomere shortening, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In addition, senescent cells secrete pro-inflammatory molecules, called senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which can alter tissue homeostasis and promote disease progression. Undoubtedly, targeting senescent cells and their secretory profiles could promote the development of integrated strategies, including regular exercise and a balanced diet or the use of senolytics and senomorphs, to improve the quality of life of the aging population. Therefore, our review aimed to highlight the role of cellular senescence in age-related musculoskeletal diseases, summarizing the main underlying mechanisms and potential anti-senescence strategies for the treatment of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis.

Abstract
Background: Many studies have reported the effects of spicy food on human health, but no studies have been conducted on the impact of long-term spicy food consumption on bone mineral density (BMD). This study aimed to investigate the impact of daily consumption of spicy food on BMD in the population aged 50 years and older. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2020 to 2022 in Jiangxi Province, China. This study investigated the differences in BMD between non-consumers and daily spicy food consumers in adults aged 50-85 years. A multiple linear regression model was used to investigate the association between spicy food consumption and BMD of the total lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), and total hip, as well as biochemical markers of bone metabolism (BMBM) levels. Results: The results showed that daily consumption of spicy food was negatively associated with total LS BMD (β = -0.013, P = 0.015). Subgroup analyses showed this negative association was more pronounced among smokers and drinkers compared to non-smokers (β: -0.006 vs. -0.042; P for interaction <0.05) and non-drinkers (β: -0.004 vs. -0.037; P for interaction <0.05). In addition, according to the daily frequency of spicy food consumption, the daily spicy food consumers were categorized into one meal per day, two meals per day, and three meals per day groups. Further analysis revealed that the negative association between spicy food and total LS BMD was progressively stronger as the frequency of daily consumption of spicy food increased (P for trend <0.05). For BMBM, daily consumption of spicy food was positively associated with serum PINP levels and negatively associated with serum Ca and serum Mg levels. Conclusions: Our study suggested that daily consumption of spicy food was associated with lower LS BMD in middle-aged and older Chinese adults, and this association was more pronounced in the smoking and drinking populations. The adverse effects of spicy food on LS BMD become progressively stronger with increasing frequency of daily consumption of spicy food. In addition, daily consumption of spicy food was associated with higher PINP levels and lower serum Ca and Mg levels.

Abstract
The prevalence of chronic diseases is currently a major public health issue worldwide and is exploding with the population growth and aging. Dietary patterns are well known to play a important role in our overall health and well-being, and therefore, poor diet and malnutrition are among the most critical risk factors for chronic disease. Thus, dietary recommendation and nutritional supplementation have significant clinical implications for the targeted treatment of some of these diseases. Multiple dietary patterns have been proposed to prevent chronic disease incidence, like Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Diabetes Risk Reduction Diet (DRRD). Among them, the MedDiet, which is one of the most well-known and studied dietary patterns in the world, has been related to a wide extent of health benefits. Substantial evidence has supported an important reverse association between higher compliance to MedDiet and the risk of chronic disease. Innovative strategies within the healthcare framework of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM) view personalized dietary customization as a predictive medical approach, cost-effective preventive measures, and the optimal dietary treatment tailored to the characteristics of patients with chronic diseases in primary and secondary care. Through a comprehensive collection and review of available evidence, this review summarizes health benefits of MedDiet in the context of PPPM/3PM for chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and cancer, thereby a working hypothesis that MedDiet can personalize the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases was derived.

Abstract
The Mediterranean dietary pattern (MPD) has shown promise in preventing low-grade systemic inflammation (LGSI). This study tested if a high adherence to the MDP by younger and older Brazilian adults is associated with lower LGSI and investigated which Mediterranean food components may contribute to these associations. We performed a secondary study on 2015 ISA-Nutrition (290 younger adults (20-59 years old) and 293 older adults (≥60 years old)), a cross-sectional population-based study in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The adherence to the MDP was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MedDietScore), obtained from two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recalls (24HDRs). The LGSI score (from plasma CRP, TNF-α, and adiponectin) identified the inflammatory status. Linear regression models assessed the association between LGSI and the MedDietScore. In older adults only, a high adherence to the MDP signified an 11.5% lower LGSI score. Older adults, classified with high adherence to the MDP, differed by consuming lower meat intake and full-fat dairy. Between older adults, the intake of vegetables and olive oil was inversely associated with the levels of LGSI. Thus, among older adults, the intake of some specific Mediterranean food determined high adherence to the MDP and was associated with decreased LGSI.

Abstract
Currently, osteoporosis-related fractures become the most cutting-edge problem of diabetes-related complications. Rational diet is not only the basis of glycemic management in type 2 diabetes patients, but also the direction of diabetic bone health. This review highlights the importance of micronutrient supplementation (including calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin K, and vitamin C) for patients with T2DM, as well as describing the constructive intermediary role of gut flora between T2DM and bone through nutrients predominantly high in dietary fiber. In addition, it is recommended to combine the Mediterranean dietary pattern with other diversified management approaches to prevent OP. Therefore, this provides a theoretical basis for the potential role of islet β-cells in promoting bone health.

Abstract
Bone represents a metabolically active tissue subject to continuous remodeling orchestrated by the dynamic interplay between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. These cellular processes are modulated by a complex interplay of biochemical and mechanical factors, which are instrumental in assessing bone remodeling. This comprehensive evaluation aids in detecting disorders arising from imbalances between bone formation and reabsorption. Osteoporosis, characterized by a reduction in bone mass and strength leading to heightened bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures, is one of the more prevalent chronic diseases. Some epidemiological studies, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), have identified an association between osteoporosis and vascular calcification. Notably, low bone mineral density has been linked to an increased incidence of aortic calcification, with shared molecules, mechanisms, and pathways between the two processes. Certain molecules emerging from these shared pathways can serve as biomarkers for bone and mineral metabolism. Detecting and evaluating these alterations early is crucial, requiring the identification of biomarkers that are reliable for early intervention. While traditional biomarkers for bone remodeling and vascular calcification exist, they suffer from limitations such as low specificity, low sensitivity, and conflicting results across studies. In response, efforts are underway to explore new, more specific biomarkers that can detect alterations at earlier stages. The aim of this review is to comprehensively examine some of the emerging biomarkers in mineral metabolism and their correlation with bone mineral density, fracture risk, and vascular calcification as well as their potential use in clinical practice.

Abstract
AIMS To facilitate drug discovery and development for the treatment of osteoporosis. BACKGROUND With global aging, osteoporosis has become a common problem threatening the health of the elderly. It is of important clinical value to explore new targets for drug intervention and develop promising drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE To understand the major molecules that mediate the communication between the cell populations of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis patients and identify potential reusable drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis. METHODS Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data of BM-MSCs in GSE147287 dataset were classified using the Seurat package. CellChat was devoted to analyzing the ligand-receptor pairs (LR pairs) contributing to the communication between BM-MSCs subsets. The LR pairs that were differentially expressed between osteoporosis samples and control samples and significantly correlated with immune score were screened in the GSE35959 dataset, and the differentially expressed gene in both GSE35959 and GSE13850 data sets were identified as targets from a single ligand or receptor. The therapeutic drugs for osteoporosis were screened by network proximity method, and the top-ranked drugs were selected for molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation with the target targets. RESULTS Twelve subsets of BM-MSCs were identified, of which CD45-BM-MSCS_4, CD45-BM- MSCS_5, and CD45+ BM-MSCs_5 subsets showed significantly different distributions between osteoporosis samples and osteoarthritis samples. Six LR pairs were identified in the bidirectional communication between these three BM-MSCs subsets and other BM-MSCs subsets. Among them, MIF-CD74 and ITGB2-ICAM2 were significantly correlated with the immune score. CD74 was identified as the target, and a total of 48 drugs targeting CD47 protein were identified. Among them, DB01940 had the lowest free energy binding score with CD74 protein and the binding state was very stable. CONCLUSION This study provided a new network-based framework for drug reuse and identified initial insights into therapeutic agents targeting CD74 in osteoporosis, which may be meaningful for promoting the development of osteoporosis treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Recent findings in the influence of dietary patterns, dairy products, beverages and microbiota composition and function on bone health are reviewed and discussed. RECENT FINDINGS Evidence is accumulating on the increased risk of fracture in individuals following a vegan diet. Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials indicates a favourable, though of low amplitude, effect of dairy products on bone mass accrual during childhood and adolescence. Though mostly based on results from observational studies, it seems that dairy product consumption, particularly fermented dairy products, is associated with a lower risk of hip fracture. Regular green tea drinkers may have a lower fracture risk than tea abstainers. Magnesium intake is beneficial for bone health. Prune supplements prevents bone loss in untreated postmenopausal women. This seems to be associated with modification of gut microbiota. SUMMARY This information should help the medical practitioners facing questions from their patients on how to protect bone health through nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a systemic chronic disease characterized by bone mineral density (BMD) reduction. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and fracture risks in northwestern China and investigate the related anthropometric risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between July 2022 and August 2022, 1429 participants (1295 females, 134 males) with measured BMD were recruited to participate in this cross-sectional study. Data on height, weight, and T score were collected. Spearman's correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used to investigate the relationships between various demographic factors and BMD and the 10-year risk of major osteoporotic fracture (MO) and hip fracture (HP). RESULTS The overall prevalence of osteoporosis in northwest China was 42.34%, with 44.56% in females and 20.90% in males. Age negatively affects females' T scores (r=-0.304, P<0.05), and height positively influences both sexes' T scores (r=0.059 P<0.05). Age (r=0.148, P<0.05) and height were positive predictors of MO (r=0.027, P<0.05), while weight was a negative predictor (r=-0.035, P<0.05). The conclusion for HP was consistent with that of MO, except for the T score, which was a positive predictor of HP (r=0.014, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of osteoporosis in northeast China is high. The association between anthropometric parameters and osteoporosis in adults in northwest China is different between sexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the association between macronutrient intake and bone mineral density (BMD) using non-substitution and substitution statistical approaches. DESIGN Longitudinal analysis. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS 1,317 adults in the Health Worker Cohort Study in Mexico. MEASUREMENTS These participants were assessed at baseline (2004-2006) and follow-up (2010-2012). Dietary intakes were assessed using validated food frequency questionnaires. BMD at the different sites was performed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Hybrid-mixed effects regression models were performed to evaluate the associations of interest. RESULTS Cross-sectional associations were found between fiber intake and higher total hip and femoral neck BMD in women and longitudinal associations with loss of femoral neck BMD in men. An increase in 5% energy intake from carbohydrate was associated with a BMD loss at several site in women and total hip and femoral neck in men. In both sexes, an increase in 5% energy intake of animal protein or fat was associated with a site-specific BMD gain after six years. Substitution analysis showed that the energy intake replacement from fat or carbohydrate by protein had an increase in BMD at different sites in women; while in men, it was only significant when replacing carbohydrate. Substitution of protein or fat by carbohydrates was associated with lower BMD in women, and only protein replacement by carbohydrates in men. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that carbohydrate intake was associated with loss of BMD, while animal protein and fat intake was associated with gain of BMD among the Mexican population. Macronutrient substitutions resulted in significant associations; however, additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.
