Abstract
Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a risk for oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), now the leading HPV-related cancer in males in Canada. P16 positivity is a marker of HPV positivity. Since 2015, all major Canadian cancer centers perform routine p16 tumor marker testing of OPCs to define their HPV status but recent data on the HPV-attributable fraction for OPC in Canada do not exist. A retrospective chart review was conducted of all squamous cell OPC cases in patients 18 years and older diagnosed from 2016 to 2020 in 4 major Canadian hospital-based regional oncology centers to determine the HPV attributable fraction for OPC in Canada using p16 as a surrogate marker for HPV. 1154 OPC cases were identified. Most patients (85.4%) were male; about one-third 26 (31.4%) had never smoked. Most OPC (80.6%) were P16 positive. p16 positivity was 27 associated with younger age (mean age p16+ 61.6 vs. p16- 66.5 years, p < 0.0001), male sex 28 (p16+ males 84.0% vs p16+ females 60.9%, p < 0.0001), lower tumor stage (Stage 1 p16+ 29 88.1% vs Stage 4 p16+ 69.4%, p < 0.001), and non-smoking (never smoked 92.3% vs past 30 smoker 82.8% vs current smoker 65.0%, p < 0.001). Logistic regression confirmed these 31 associations. This study, the largest cohort of Canadian patients with OPC yet reported, demonstrates the high attributable fraction for HPV-related OPC. HPV-related OPC was more likely in men, younger individuals, and never smokers. These findings highlight the burden of HPV-related OPC in Canada and support gender-neutral HPV vaccination as an important public health strategy to prevent head and neck cancer.

Abstract
CONTEXT About half of adolescents aged 13 to 17 in United States are not fully vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). As they age into young adulthood, colleges may be an excellent target population nexus for implementing interventions to improve HPV vaccination uptake. OBJECTIVES Our study goal was to generate knowledge about HPV vaccine offerings and awareness programs at colleges to ascertain the extent of campus-facilitated access to HPV immunization and education in 1 state. DESIGN An electronic survey was designed and emailed to 32 of 47 Maryland colleges for which relevant campus contacts could be identified. SETTINGS The study took place at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in consultation with the Maryland Cancer Collaborative and the Maryland Department of Health. PARTICIPANTS Maryland colleges and universities. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES HPV vaccine and awareness program offerings on college and university campuses. RESULTS Twenty Maryland colleges responded. Two colleges offer awareness programs only. Ten colleges offer HPV vaccine, covering about 39% of Maryland college students. Of these, 4 colleges schedule "periodic" campus health clinics or provide an immunization prescription, which is filled at nearby pharmacies. In all colleges, which offer HPV vaccine, immunization is offered to everyone (both men and women) at no out-of-pocket cost. CONCLUSIONS In cooperation with the Maryland Cancer Collaborative, the implementation arm for the Maryland Cancer Control Plan, we showed that college campuses are an excellent target site for implementation of interventions to improve access of college age students to HPV vaccine and awareness programs. We lay the groundwork for recommendations, programs and policies that can improve HPV vaccine offerings among college students thus raising the HPV vaccination rate in young adults. Simple inexpensive alternatives to offering vaccine at college health centers may be periodic campus health clinics and arrangements with nearby pharmacies.

Abstract
The number of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCC) caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) has increased significantly in recent years. However, no robust data exist on the incidence of HPV-associated OPSCC as well as their treatment in central Europe.The aim is to establish an epidemiological register of patients with OPSCC in central Europe.To close the evidence gap on p16-positive OPSCC, a prospective multicenter registry on incidence, risk factors and treatment of OPSCC in certified Head and Neck Tumor Centers according to the German Cancer Society was established. Data collection was pseudonymously performed using the web-based Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap).In 2022 and 2023, 1312 patients with OPSCC from 34 centers were included. 720 patients (58.2 %) were p16-positive. The most common locations of p16-positive primary tumors were the tonsil (49.9 %) and the base of the tongue (28.7 %). 63.1 % of p16-positive OPSCC received primary surgical treatment, whereas only 48.0 % of p16-negative tumors received primary surgery. Differences are also evident in the adjuvant therapy: 58 % of p16-negative OPSCC did not receive adjuvant therapy after surgery, compared with 37.1 % of p16-positive OPSCC.The start of the OPSCC registry study was technically smooth. This registry provides an insight into the current care situation of OPSCC in German-speaking countries and will gain importance through the participation of more centers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant driver of elevated risk for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). In 2018, HPV vaccination eligibility was expanded to men and women aged 27 to 45. We evaluated changes in awareness of HPV, its association with OPSCC, and HPV vaccination among all US adults between 2018 and 2020, focusing on those aged 27 to 45. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional survey cycles. SETTING The Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). METHODS The HINTS, a nationally representative survey of US adults, was queried. A total of 3504 adults in 2018 and 3865 adults in 2020 were assessed for knowledge of HPV, its vaccine, its association with OPSCC, and changes in awareness between 2018 and 2020. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Most respondents were aware of HPV (2018: 60.8%; 2020: 64.8%) and its vaccine (2018: 60.8%; 2020: 61.6%). A significant decrease in awareness of the association between HPV and cervical cancer was seen between 2018 and 2020 (75.0% vs 70.2%, P = .028). Knowledge of HPV+ OPSCC was poor and did not change over time (2018: 27.0%, 2020: 29.5%). Statistically significant increases in HPV awareness between 2018 and 2020 were found for individuals who reported completing high school as their highest level of education (P = .009), Caucasians (P = .013), males (P = .024), and those making more than $200,000 annually (P = .022). CONCLUSION Knowledge of the association between HPV and OPSCC remained poor despite expanded vaccine eligibility. Public health education on the association may increase awareness for groups likely to benefit from vaccination.

Abstract
This scoping review maps primary prevention and early detection strategies for oral and oropharyngeal cancer across national cancer plans and noncommunicable disease plans from all World Health Organization Member States. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, bibliographic search was performed on key organization websites until March 2023. Of the 194 countries assessed three had subnational plans, resulting in 264 self-governing political entities and similar with revised plans. Among these, 124 (47%) addressed oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factors and preventive strategies, including 73 national and 51 subnational plans (one from Australia, two from the United Kingdom and 48 from the United States) across 76 (39.2%) countries. Southeast Asia led with 81.8% self-governing political entities mentioning oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factors and preventive strategies, followed by the Americas (63.5%). Western Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean regions had the lowest coverage with 24.2% and 23.8%, respectively. Tobacco use was the most discussed oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factor in primary prevention plans (63.7%), followed by HPV infection (54%) and alcohol consumption (35.5%). Opportunistic examination was the most common strategy for early detection, recommended by 29% of self-governing political entities, followed by screening in high-risk individuals (14.5%), self-examination (5.6%), and population-based screening (2.4%). Despite the high oral and oropharyngeal cancer incidence in many countries, most cancer plans only indirectly covered it and showed a great diversity of preventive strategies. Missing data in available documents should not imply an absence of an oral and oropharyngeal cancer policy. Other documents may exist but were not available on the websites, highlighting potential bias.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers. In 2015 and 2016, HPV vaccines became publicly funded for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) under 27 years of age in most Canadian provinces. METHODS Between 2017 and 2019, sexually active GBM in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver were recruited through respondent-driven sampling. Participants aged 16-30 years were invited to self-collect oral rinse specimens for HPV testing. We estimated HPV prevalence in the oral tract overall and compared these by vaccination status. RESULTS Among the 838 GBM with a valid oral specimen, 36.9% reported receiving ≥1 dose of HPV vaccine. Overall, oral HPV prevalence was 2.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.5%-3.7%) for at least 1 HPV type and 1.2% (95% CI, .5%-1.9%) for any high-risk type. We detected quadrivalent (HPV 6/11/16/18) vaccine-preventable types in 0.3% (95% CI, .0%-1.0%) of vaccinated individuals and 1.1% (95% CI, .1%-2.0%) of unvaccinated individuals. CONCLUSIONS Oral HPV prevalence was low in a population of young urban GBM in Canada, of whom 37% were vaccinated. Findings serve as a benchmark for monitoring of vaccination impacts on oral HPV infection within this priority population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of oral human papillomavirus (HPV) in the healthy population and patients with oral diseases such as oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), and oral benign lesions (BL), is not consistently described in the literature, with scarce and often heterogeneous data. In addition, the efficacy of HPV prophylactic vaccines in preventing HPV-related oral disorders has been scarcely investigated. METHODS The prevalence of HPV and the potential impact of vaccines were analyzed in 1,415 oral rinse specimens, collected over 10 years and grouped into four categories based on histological/clinical diagnosis. RESULTS HPV prevalence in OSCC, OPMD, and BL patients and in healthy individuals potentially exposed to HPV (HPE) was comparable (12.7 vs. 27.2% vs. 13.5 vs. 9%). Statistical analysis of the vaccine impact involved calculating high and low estimates and showed a significant difference only for the low effect. The nonavalent vaccine had higher low estimates than the bivalent vaccine in OSCC and HPE patients (29.6 vs. 51.9%, p <0.05; 18.2 vs. 42.4%, p <0.05), while for OPMD and BL, the frequency of bivalent low estimates was lower than that of quadrivalent and nonavalent (48.6 vs. 68.6%, p <0.05 and 48.6 vs. 77.1%, p <0.05; 23.9 vs. 50.7%, p <0.05, and 23.9 vs. 63.4%, p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study provided new insights into the prevalence of oral HPV and showed that the nonavalent vaccine may provide better protection than the other vaccines in the presence of an OSCC diagnosis. Conversely, the quadrivalent vaccine may be sufficient to prevent OPMD and BL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a leading cause of oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC). This study aimed to carry out a Knowledge, Attitude and Perception survey on HPV infection, HPV+ OPSCC, and HPV vaccination among Italian dental students. METHODS Through an online self-administered questionnaire consisting of 82 questions, data on dental students' sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and perceptions concerning HPV+ OPSCC, infection and vaccination were acquired. A statistical analysis, based on their year of attendance (early career, from 1st to 3rd year vs. late career, from 4th to 6th year) was also conducted. RESULTS A total of 412 dental students completed the questionnaire. Knowledge of HPV+ OPSCC was reported by 61% of early-career students and 73% of late-career students, with high awareness of the HPV-OPSCC correlation in both groups (85% vs. 89%, respectively). The percentage of correct responses regarding HPV infection knowledge was 61% for early-career and 73% for late-career students, while vaccine knowledge was 70% and 78%, respectively. Over 90% of students acknowledged the dentist's role in educating patients about HPV and OPSCC, and attitudes toward discussing HPV and vaccination were positive. However, only about half would recommend the vaccine to either gender. Statistically significant differences were found between early- and late-career groups across all knowledge sections (p < 0.001), while no significant differences emerged for perception (p = 0.076) or attitude (p = 0.147). CONCLUSIONS The study reveals encouraging results but highlights significant gaps in dental students' knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward HPV+ OPSCC, infection, and vaccination. Addressing these gaps through targeted education and training in dental curricula could improve HPV prevention awareness and patient education, ultimately enhancing public health outcomes.

Abstract
Oral HPV infection is the main risk factor for the development of oropharyngeal carcinoma. Men who have sex with men (MSM), especially if living with HIV (PLWH), are at increased risk of infection and consequently of cancer development. Aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of nonavalent vaccine on oral HPV infection in a cohort of MSM and transgender women (TGW). This prospective study included all MSM and TGW who started nonavalent HPV vaccination from May 2019 to September 2021. Oral rinse was collected before each vaccine administration and after six months of follow up. Descriptive statistics were used. Kaplan Meier probability curves and Cox regression models for HPV acquisition and clearance were calculated. The analysis included 211 individuals (202 MSM and 9 TGW). PLWH were 138 (65.4%). Baseline oral rinse was positive in 30 subjects (14.2%). Positivity rate did not change over time (p = 0.742), even when restricting the analysis only to high-risk genotypes (p = 0.575) and to genotypes covered by vaccine (p = 0.894). The risk to acquire HPV infection was 12.8% at one year and 33.4% at two years after vaccination. The probability to clear the infection was 67.6% at one year and 87.9% at two years. HIV infection had no impact on vaccine efficacy. Age above 45 years was the only factor associated to HPV acquisition (aHR 4.06, 95% CI 1.03-15.98, p = 0.045). Prevalence of oral HPV infection was higher in PLWH, but HIV had no impact on viral clearance or acquisition after vaccination.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a circular, double-stranded DNA virus and recognized as the most prevalent sexually transmitted infectious agent worldwide. The HPV life cycle encompasses three primary stages. First, the virus infiltrates the basal cells of the stratified epidermis. Second, there is a low-level expression of viral genes and preservation of the viral genome in the basal layer. Lastly, productive replication of HPV occurs in differentiated cells. An effective immune response, involving various immune cells, including innate immunity, keratinocytes, dendritic cells, and natural killer T cells, is instrumental in clearing HPV infection and thwarting the development of HPV-associated tumors. Vaccines have demonstrated their efficacy in preventing genital warts, high-grade precancerous lesions, and cancers in females. In males, the vaccines can also aid in preventing genital warts, anal precancerous lesions, and cancer. This comprehensive review aims to provide a thorough and detailed exploration of HPV infections, delving into its genetic characteristics, life cycle, pathogenesis, and the role of high-risk and low-risk HPV strains. In addition, this review seeks to elucidate the intricate immune interactions that govern HPV infections, spanning from innate immunity to adaptive immune responses, as well as examining the evasion mechanisms used by the virus. Furthermore, the article discusses the current landscape of HPV vaccines and common treatments, contributing to a holistic understanding of HPV and its associated diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous studies having evaluated the associations between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of specific cancers other than anogenital tract and oropharyngeal, the findings are inconsistent and the quality of evidence has not been systematically quantified. We aimed to summarise the existing evidence as well as to evaluate the strength and credibility of these associations. METHODS We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies. PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2024. Studies with systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined associations between HPV or HPV-associated genotypes infection and specific cancers were eligible for this review. The quality of the methodology was evaluated using A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). The credibility of the evidence was assessed using GRADE. The protocol was preregistered with PROSPERO (CRD42023439070). FINDINGS The umbrella review identified 31 eligible studies reporting 87 associations with meta-analytic estimates, including 1191 individual studies with 336,195 participants. Of those, 29 (93.5%) studies were rated as over moderate quality by AMSTAR. Only one association indicating HPV-18 infection associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (odds ratio [OR] = 3.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.24-5.41) was graded as convincing evidence. There were five unique outcomes identified as highly suggestive evidence, including HPV infection increased the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 7.03, 95% CI = 3.87-12.76), oesophageal cancer (OR = 3.32, 95% CI = 2.54-4.34), oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 2.05-3.54), lung cancer (OR = 3.60, 95% CI = 2.59-5.01), and breast cancer (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 4.35-9.00). According to GRADE, one association was classified as high, indicating that compared with the controls in normal tissues, HPV infection was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. INTERPRETATION The umbrella review synthesised up-to-date observational evidence on HPV infection with the risk of breast cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, oesophageal cancer, oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and lung cancer. Further larger prospective cohort studies are needed to verify the associations, providing public health recommendations for prevention of disease. Abstract
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is considered one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the cervix and head and neck. Manifestations of HPV infections can be manifold, ranging from asymptomatic infections to benign or potentially malignant lesions to intraepithelial neoplasms and invasive carcinomas. The heterogeneity of clinical manifestations from HPV infection depends on the interactions between the viral agent and the host, a direct consequence of the ability on the part of HPV is to remain silent and to evade and convey the action of the host immune system. The oral mucosa represents one of the tissues for which HPV has a distinct tropism and is frequently affected by infection. While much information is available on the role that HPV infection plays in the development of SCC in the oral cavity, there is less information on asymptomatic infections and benign HPV-induced oral lesions. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to analyze, in light of current knowledge, the early clinical and bio-humoral prognostic features related to the risk of HPV malignant transformation, focusing on subclinical conditions, benign lesions, and the correlation between oral infection and infection in other districts. The data show that the main risk associated with HPV infection is related to malignant transformation of lesions. Although HPV-driven OPSCC is associated with a better prognosis than non-HPV-driven OPSCC, primary prevention and early detection of the infection and affected genotype are essential to reduce the risk of malignant neoplastic complications and improve the prognosis.

Abstract
The human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Most HPV infections clear spontaneously within 2 years of infection; however, persistent infection can result in a wide array of diseases, ranging from genital warts to cancer. Most cases of cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers are due to HPV infection, with cervical cancer being one of the leading causes of cancer death in women worldwide. Screening is available for HPV and cervical cancer, but is not available everywhere, particularly in lower-resource settings. HPV infection disproportionally affects individuals living with HIV, resulting in decreased clearance, increased development of cancer, and increased mortality. The development of the HPV vaccine has shown a drastic decrease in HPV-related diseases. The vaccine prevents cervical cancer with near 100% efficacy, if given prior to first sexual activity. Vaccination uptake remains low worldwide due to a lack of access and limited knowledge of HPV. Increasing awareness of HPV and access to vaccination are necessary to decrease cancer and HPV-related morbidity and mortality worldwide.

MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of articles reporting on HPV+ OPSCC within Scopus database was performed and all documents published up to December 31th, 2022 were eligible for analysis. Outcomes included the exploration of key characteristics (number of manuscripts published per year, growth rate, top productive countries, most highly cited papers, and the most well-represented journals), collaboration parameters (international collaboration ratio and networks, co-occurrence networks), keywords analysis (trend topics, factorial analysis). RESULTS A total of 5200 documents were found, published from March, 1987 to December, 2022. The number of publications increased annually with an average growth rate of 19.94%, reaching a peak of 680 documents published in 2021. The 10 most cited documents (range 1105-4645) were published from 2000 to 2012. The keywords factorial analysis revealed two main clusters: one on epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and association with other HPV tumors; the other one about the therapeutic options. According to the frequency of keywords, new items are emerging in the last three years regarding the application of Artifical Intelligence (machine learning and radiomics) and the diagnostic biomarkers (circulating tumor DNA). CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis highlights the importance of research efforts in prevention, diagnostics, and treatment strategies for this disease. Given the urgency of optimizing treatment and improving clinical outcomes, further clinical trials are needed to bridge unaddressed gaps in the management of HPV+ OPSCC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) is common among healthy individuals but causes and implications of persistent infections are under evaluation in the pathogenesis of head and neck neoplasms. METHODS This was a retrospective study evaluating the prevalence of high-risk (HR), probable HR and low-risk (LR) HPV types in patients reporting signs/symptoms of oral and upper respiratory tract lesions. Individuals attending between 2019 and 2022 a University Hospital in Milan, Italy, with risk factors for HPV (unprotected oral sex and/or previous documentation of HPV infection in oral and upper respiratory tract and/or another anatomical site) were included. RESULTS Fourteen out of 110 (12.7%) individuals tested positive for HPV DNA. The prevalence of HR-HPV and LR-HPV was 3.6% (4/110) and 9.1% (10/110), respectively. No probable/possible HR-HPV was detected. Specifically, 10/110 (9.1%) were diagnosed with 1 LR-HPV genotype, 3/110 (2.7%) were infected with 1 HR-HPV and 1/110 had 3 concomitant HR-HPV types. HPV 16 (2.7%, 3/110) and 6 (4.5%, 5/110) were the most common HR and LR types, respectively. One patient positive for HPV 16, 33 and 35 was diagnosed with cancer at the base of the tongue. Two individuals among those who tested positive for HPV DNA reported previous HPV vaccination. CONCLUSIONS Our data, in line with observations from previous prevalence studies, support the potential role of HPV in head and neck neoplasms. HPV DNA testing should be performed in patients presenting lesions in oral/respiratory tracts and risk factors for HPV. Improvement in HPV vaccination coverage is warranted.

Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that the human papillomavirus (HPV) can infect a wide range of human tissues, including those within the oral cavity. High-risk oral HPV strains have been associated with the development and progression of oral cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinomas. Although many studies have examined the prevalence of the high-risk strains HPV16 and HPV18, far fewer have assessed the prevalence of other high-risk HPV strains. An approved study protocol was used to identify HPV52 and HPV58 among clinical samples (n = 87) from a saliva biorepository. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and validated primers for HPV52 and HPV58 were used to facilitate this screening. This screening demonstrated that a total of n = 4/45 or 8.9% of adult saliva samples harbored high-risk HPV52, and n = 2/45 or 4.4% tested positive for high-risk HPV58. In addition, a total of n = 6/42 or 14.3% of the pediatric saliva samples tested positive for high-risk HPV, including n = 5/42 or 11.9% with HPV52 and n = 3/42 or 7.1% for HPV58. These data demonstrate the presence of the high-risk oncogenic HPV52 and HPV58 strains among both adult and pediatric clinical patient samples. More detailed longitudinal research must be conducted to determine whether this prevalence may be increasing or decreasing over time. In addition, these data strongly support public health prevention efforts, such as knowledge and awareness of the nine-valent HPV vaccine covering additional high-risk strains, including HPV52 and HPV58.

Abstract
Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), involves the palatine tonsils, soft palate, base of tongue, and uvula, with the ability to spread to adjacent subsites. Personalized treatment strategies for Human Papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (HPV+OPSCC) are yet to be established. In this article, we summarise our current understanding of the pathogenesis of HPV+OPSCC, the intrinsic role of the immune system, current ICI clinical trials, and the potential role of small molecule immunotherapy in HPV+OPSCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of human papillomavirus immunization and its impact on cervical cancer development in Kazakhstan. METHODS The current research is a case-control study with two groups: a main group and a control group. A total of 725 subjects participated in the research. RESULTS The association between vaccination and cervical cancer development was calculated both for the two groups as a whole and for individual patients, who were selected based on criteria of residence, presence of immunodeficiency or chronic cardiac or renal pathology, as well as analysis of age at which the vaccine dose was received. There was a statistically significant association between the absence of the human papillomavirus vaccine and the risk of cervical cancer in all groups. When considering the entire cohort, the chance of finding a risk factor (lack of vaccination) was almost 7 times higher in the main group than in the control group. Thus, an association between vaccination and cervical cancer risk was found in each of the pairs of subjects. CONCLUSION The effectiveness of vaccination in preventing cervical cancer was not observed in patients who were vaccinated after 18 years of age, while most patients in the control group were vaccinated in their teens. The practical significance of the research is not only to further study the problem of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Kazakhstan but also to popularize HPV immunization to prevent cervical cancer (CC).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer is rising, thus the understanding of HPV infection and vaccination among oral healthcare professionals is becoming increasingly important. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge of Dutch dental hygiene students on HPV infection and vaccination and assessed various aspects of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer. METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study invited the entire Dutch dental hygiene student population registered in September 2016 to complete an online questionnaire concerning the knowledge of HPV infection and vaccination, including the aspects of HPV-related Oro-Pharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OPSCC). Data were analysed using t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests and Chi-square tests. RESULTS Invited were all 1248 Dutch dental hygiene students and 232 (18.6%) students completed the questionnaire. More than 95% of the students indicated HPV infection as a risk factor for OPSCC and 48.7% was aware of the availability of HPV vaccination. Additionally, students considered it important to discuss HPV as a risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer with their patients. In general, the students scored highest on the questions about risk factors for OPSCC and poorest on the questions about general HPV knowledge and HPV vaccination. Although the mean overall knowledge score was significantly higher in senior compared with junior students, knowledge scores of senior students remained insufficient. CONCLUSION This study identified deficits in knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccination among Dutch dental hygiene students. Future research should focus on improving the content of dental hygiene curricula and development of ongoing educational tools for dental hygienists.

Abstract
Many human papillomavirus (HPV) strains induce cancer in the cervix and the oral cavity. Although high-risk strains including HPV16 and HPV18 are commonly known, additional high-risk strains including HPV31, HPV33, and HPV35 may also induce carcinogenesis, and much less is known about their prevalence. Using an approved protocol, samples from a salivary biorepository were screened to find pediatric and adult samples from a multi-ethnic, university-based patient clinic population. A total of N = 86 samples from the saliva biorepository met the quality and concentration standards and were screened for high-risk HPV. qPCR screening of adult samples revealed n = 10/45 or 22% were HPV31- or HPV33-positive. In addition, a total of n = 9/41 or 21.9% of pediatric samples were either HPV31- or HPV33-positive (or both). No samples harbored HPV35. Most samples were derived from patients within the recommended vaccination or catch-up age range (age 9-45 years). These results demonstrated that a significant percentage of patients harbor additional high-risk HPV strains within the oral cavity, including HPV31 and HPV33. These data support oral healthcare provider recommendations for the newer nine-valent vaccine, which includes both HPV31 and HPV33.

Abstract
Knowledge of human papillomavirus transmission from the genital tract to the oral mucosa remains unsatisfactory, with poor and often inconsistent literature results. The increase in HPV-associated oral malignancies prompts further analysis of the simultaneous detection of the virus in the two anatomical areas and on the identification of genotypes to be included in future vaccines. Therefore, in this retrospective study, we evaluated orogenital HPV concurrence, hrHPV, lrHPV and type-concordance in 337 samples, as well as the prevalence of the most common genotypes not included in HPV vaccines. Concurrence was found in 12.5% (31/248) of cases, hr-concordance in 61.3% (19/31) and lr-concordance in 12.9% (4/31). Finally, type-concordance was found in 32.3% (10/31) of concurrent infections. Regarding the identification of non-vaccine genotypes, the significantly prevalent genotypes in the anogenital area were HPV66 (12.6%, p < 0.0001), HPV53 (11.1%, p < 0.0001), HPV51 (8.7%, p < 0.0001), HPV42 (8.2%, p < 0.0001) and HPV68 (5.6%, p = 0.0034) in women and HPV66 (14.6%, p = 0.0058), HPV42 (12.2%, p = 0.0428), HPV51 (12.2%, p = 0.0428), HPV53 (12.2%, p = 0.0428), HPV70 (12.2%, p = 0.0428) and HPV73 (12.2%, p = 0.0428) in men. Considering the results of our study, we recommend including the high-risk genotypes HPV51, HPV68, HPV53 and HPV66 in future HPV vaccine formulations.

Abstract
We present the consensus document on the immunization schedule for adolescents developed by 3 scientific societies: the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), through its Advisory Committee on Vaccines (CAV-AEP), the Spanish Society of Adolescent Medicine (SEMA) and the Spanish Association of Vaccinology (AEV). There are particularities in infectious disease during adolescence, such as an increased susceptibility to pertussis, poorer outcomes of chickenpox, mumps and hepatitis A, a high incidence of sexually transmitted infections or increased prevalence of meningococcal carriage. The document analyses the schedule for adolescents in the context of vaccination policy overall. It contemplates the vaccines to be included in the immunization schedule for healthy adolescents: against invasive meningococcal disease (tetravalent ACWY and B), against human papillomavirus (which should be gender-neutral), against pertussis, against influenza and against SARS-CoV-2 (in unvaccinated individuals and at-risk groups). It is worth noting that the 4CMenB vaccine appears to confer some protection against gonococcal infection, which would be a considerable added value for adolescents. The vaccination of adolescents belonging to risk groups or travelling abroad also needs to be contemplated, as is the case in any other age group. Vaccination against hepatitis A, which is included in the routine immunization schedule of Catalonia, Ceuta and Melilla from the second year of life, should also be considered a priority in adolescents traveling to endemic areas.

Abstract
Given the need to improve patient knowledge about HPV-related oral lesions, awareness of HPV infection prevention measures, and compliance with vaccination, as well as patient demand for free and easy access to well-tailored and time-saving health information, the present cross-sectional study examined the accuracy of relevant YouTube videos and their suitability for mass-reach health communication and HPV vaccination promotion. A video search was performed, using keywords obtained from the Google Trends website, until 9 January 2023. Video selection and data collection were performed by independent, pre-calibrated examiners. Descriptive statistics were performed on videos' general characteristics, source reliability, popularity, information and quality, content topics, vaccination-encouraging/discouraging messages, and educational value. Pearson's correlation was calculated between educational value and all parameters. Mann-Whitney U test compared very low/low vs. medium/good/excellent educational value and HPV vaccination-encouraging vs. -discouraging videos. Most of the 97 YouTube videos analyzed were moderately accurate and reliable, 53% had moderate/good/excellent educational value, and 80% encouraged HPV vaccination, making them suitable for mass-reach communication. The limited role of oral healthcare providers in uploading relevant content, with the poor dissemination of information about HPV-related benign and malignant oral lesions, may be expanded by purposefully using YouTube and other mass media to improve patient knowledge of HPV-related oral lesions and promote HPV vaccination, which also underscores its potential beneficial oral effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence and incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCCs) driven by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are increasing worldwide, being higher in high-income countries. However, data from Italy are scanty. p16INK4a overexpression is the standard in determining HPV-driven carcinogenesis, but disease prevalence impacts on its positive predictive value. METHODS This is a multicenter retrospective study enrolling 390 consecutive patients aged ≥18 years, diagnosed with pathologically confirmed OPSCC in Northeastern Italy between 2000 and 2022. High-risk HPV-DNA and p16INK4a status were retrieved from medical records or evaluated in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens. A tumor was defined as HPV-driven when double positive for high-risk HPV-DNA and p16INK4a overexpression. RESULTS Overall, 125 cases (32%) were HPV-driven, with a significant upward temporal trend from 12% in 2000-2006 to 50% in 2019-2022. The prevalence of HPV-driven cancer of the tonsil and base of the tongue increased up to 59%, whereas it remained below 10% in other subsites. Consequently, the p16INK4a positive predictive value was 89% for the former and 29% for the latter. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of HPV-driven OPSCC continued to increase, even in the most recent period. When using p16INK4a overexpression as a surrogate marker of transforming HPV infection, each institution should consider the subsite-specific prevalence rates of HPV-driven OPSCC as these significantly impact on its positive predictive value.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible of the increasing incidence rates of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in high-income countries. This significant epidemiological change requires several and diverse prevention strategies. RECENT FINDINGS The cervical cancer prevention model is the paradigm of HPV-related cancer, and its success provides encouragement for the development of similar methods to prevent HPV-related OPSCC. However, there are some limitations that hinder its application in this disease. Here, we review the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of HPV-related OPSCC and discuss some directions for future research. SUMMARY The development of new and targeted strategies to prevent HPV-related OPSCC is needed since they could definitely have a direct impact on the reduction of morbidity and mortality of this disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) contributes to the development of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) and is currently the leading cause of OPC in the Western world. There have been limited studies examining the effect of HPV-vaccination on OPC incidence in men. This review aims to interrogate relationship linking HPV-vaccination and OPC in men, to potentially recommend pangender HPV-vaccination, to reduce the incidence of HPV associated OPC. MAIN BODY A review was carried out using Ovid Medline, Scopus and Embase databases, on 22nd October 2021 investigating the effect of HPV-vaccination on OPC prevalence in men and including studies with vaccination data pertaining to men in the past 5 years, while excluding those studies without appropriate oral HPV-positivity data and non-systematic reviews. Studies were evaluated as per the PRISMA guidelines and ranked using risk of bias tools including RoB-2, ROBINS-1 and the NIH quality assessment tools. 7 studies were included ranging from original research to systematic review articles. All studies were published in English from 2017 to 2021. Overall, these suggested that HPV-vaccination reduced levels of oral HPV positivity in men. This was thought to be indicative of a reduced risk of development of HPV-associated OPC. A limitation of this study was the inability to conduct meta-analysis due to the heterogeneity of included studies. We noted a significant impact on the reduction of HPV positivity post HPV-vaccination and a potential contribution to reducing the future incidence of OPC. CONCLUSION This review makes a strong case for pangender HPV-vaccination in combatting OPC in men.

Abstract
HPV vaccination rates remain suboptimal in the United States. While the current literature focuses on expressly hesitant parents, few studies have examined parents with "high intent", or those indicating they definitely will vaccinate and have had the opportunity but not yet vaccinated their adolescents. Our objective was to differentiate characteristics of mothers with high intent from those who already vaccinated their adolescents using various socioeconomic, previous vaccine decision-making, and healthcare provider relationship-related variables. English-speaking mothers or female guardians of adolescents ages 11-14 years living in low HPV vaccine uptake states within the U.S. in September 2018 were recruited from a national survey panel as part of a larger study. We assessed HPV vaccine status of their adolescents and categorized respondents into two categories: Already Vaccinated and High Intent. We assessed differences using a multivariable logistic regression model. Among 2406 mothers, 18% reported high intent vs. 82% already having vaccinated. Mothers with high intent were more likely to identify as non-Hispanic White (p = 0.01), to have a younger adolescent (p < 0.001), and to report not receiving a provider HPV vaccination recommendation (p < 0.001). Mothers who estimated that half/more (vs. less) of their child's friends have received/will receive the vaccine had higher odds of already vaccinating (p < 0.001). Our findings suggest that clinicians may be able to improve HPV vaccination uptake within their practices by giving repeated, high-quality recommendations to parents of children who are not yet vaccinated. Additionally, these findings indicate perceived social norms may play a large role in on-time vaccine uptake. Reassuring hesitant parents that most parents accept the vaccine may also improve uptake in clinical practice.

Abstract
Most patients diagnosed with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) will present with locally advanced disease, requiring multimodality therapy. While this approach has a curative intent, a significant subset of these patients will develop locoregional failure and/or distant metastases. The prognosis of these patients is poor, and therapeutic options other than palliative chemotherapy are urgently needed. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpression is an important factor in the pathogenesis of HNSCC, and a decade ago, the EGFR targeting monoclonal antibody cetuximab was approved for the treatment of late-stage HNSCC in different settings. In 2016, the anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitors nivolumab and pembrolizumab were both approved for the treatment of patients with recurrent or metastatic HNSCC with disease progression on or after platinum-containing chemotherapy, and in 2019, pembrolizumab was approved for first-line treatment (either as monotherapy in PD-L1 expressing tumors, or in combination with chemotherapy). Currently, trials are ongoing to include immune checkpoint inhibition in the (neo)adjuvant treatment of HNSCC as well as in novel combinations with other drugs in the recurrent/metastatic setting to improve response rates and survival and help overcome resistance mechanisms to immune checkpoint blockade. This article provides a comprehensive review of the management of head and neck cancers in the current era of immunotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, and prevalence is still substantially higher in men than in women. Causative factors include smoking and alcohol use, while human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is causally related to a subset of oropharyngeal cancers. In this retrospective study, we aimed to provide estimates on the clinical and economic burden of HNSCC in Spain. METHODS We used the discharge reports from the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS), to retrospectively analyze hospital discharge data in individuals with a diagnosis of HNSCC in any diagnostic position, based on the ICD coding system (ICD-9-CM and ICD10 CM), from 2009 to 2019. RESULTS A total of 175,340 admissions and 14,498 deaths due to laryngeal, pharyngeal and oral cavity cancer were recorded in Spain, of which 85% occurred in men. The most prevalent diagnoses were laryngeal cancer in men (50.9%) and oral cavity cancer in women (49.1%). In general, the hospitalization and death rates for all major head and neck cancer sites decreased in men and increased or remained stable in women during the study period. However, the corresponding rates for tonsil cancer, strongly associated with HPV infection, increased significantly in men. Overall, the economic burden of HNSCC during the study period was estimated at 100 million euros per year on average. CONCLUSION HNSCC still places an important clinical and economic burden on the health system in Spain. Prevention strategies should be prioritized, and vaccination programs against HPV in both sexes should be reinforced.

Abstract
Australia has been a world leader in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and was the first country to implement a fully funded national HPV vaccination program, from 2007 for girls and 2013 for boys. In 2018 the program changed from a 4-valent to 9-valent HPV vaccine and a 3-dose to 2-dose standard schedule. We assessed stakeholder perspectives on factors influencing program outcomes and impact as part of a comprehensive program evaluation. In late 2019 and early 2020, we conducted 26 interviews with 42 key stakeholder participants and received 1513 survey responses from stakeholders including general practice staff and school-based nurse immunisers. Findings included that the 2-dose schedule is better accepted by schools and students and has reduced program cost and resource requirements. However, course completion rates have not increased as much as anticipated due to the 6-12 month dosing interval and reduced opportunities for school-based catch-up vaccination. Major reported barriers to increased vaccine coverage were absenteeism and consent form return. Vaccine hesitancy is not currently a major issue but remains a potential threat to the program. While Australia's HPV vaccination program is perceived as highly successful, measures to further enhance the program's impact and mitigate potential threats are important.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted virus that is responsible not only for uterine cervical cancer, but also for the oral and oropharyngeal cancers. In this latter case, the virus indiscriminately affects both sexes at any age. Vaccination plays a key role in preventing infection and its possible consequences. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the degree of awareness of papillomavirus infection and its possible prevention in the Sicilian population. A prospective observational study was carried out on the Sicilian population through a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions. The survey lasted from June 2021 to December 2021. A total of 844 respondents were included: 60.90% were female and 53.55% were aged between 21 and 30 years. Most of the surveyed population knew about the virus and the existence of the vaccine, however, many of them did not know about virus's effects on the oral and oropharyngeal sites (49.17%), or about the indication for vaccination for males (39.69%). Oral and oropharyngeal papillomavirus-related cancers are an increasingly frequent finding, especially in young adults. Therefore, it is necessary and quite mandatory to educate the population about the risks that certain voluptuous habits may cause, with the help of general practitioners, schools, social media, and social networks.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related benign papillary epithelial neoplasms are common lesions affecting any region of the oral cavity. This study evaluated the trends in frequency, location, and demographics of these lesions over 20 years in a large biopsy service. Following IRB approval, the archives of UF Oral Pathology Biopsy Service between 1995 and 2015 were queried. Cases diagnosed as squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, and condyloma acuminatum were included. Extraoral locations, inconclusive diagnoses, or syndrome-related HPV lesions were excluded. Age, gender, location, clinical presentation, and diagnoses were recorded. Data from one calendar year per 5-year span was assessed including the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. A total of 1458 cases were identified over the total 5 calendar years assessed. Papilloma as a percentage of total biopsies per year was as follows: 1995 (2.6%), 2000 (3.3%), 2005 (3.6%), 2010 (4.0%) and 2015 (4.5%), representing a 73% (1.9×) percentage increase. Males (56%) were affected more commonly; however, in patients under 19 years, a female predominance was observed. The overall percentage of lesions in females increased by 30.6% over the time frame. The mean age was 54 years (range 1-93 years) with an increase of 10 years over time. About 1.1% of patients had multifocal lesions and 0.2% had a recurrence. In descending order of frequency, the tongue, soft palate, and mandibular gingiva were most involved. Maxillary gingiva and lower lip were the most common locations in patients under 19. Location varied over time, however, the biggest increase was noted for lesions on the gingiva. Squamous papilloma was the most common histologic variant (93.6%). The incidence of benign HPV-related oral lesions increased substantially over the 2 decades studied. This increase was statistically significant with a p-value <0.00045. Other trends noted included increase in the following: the average age, female involvement, and gingival location. Our results indicate a trend for the overall increase in the prevalence of benign oral HPV lesions in our population.

Abstract
The clinical response to cancer therapies involves the complex interplay between the systemic, tumoral, and stromal immune response as well as the direct impact of treatments on cancer cells. Each individual's immunological and cancer histories are different, and their carcinogen exposures may differ. This means that even though two patients with oral tumors may carry an identical mutation in TP53, they are likely to have different pre-existing immune responses to their tumors. These differences may arise due to their distinct accessory mutations, genetic backgrounds, and may relate to clinical factors including previous chemotherapy exposure and concurrent medical comorbidities. In isolation, their cancer cells may respond similarly to cancer therapy, but due to their baseline variability in pre-existing immune responses, patients can have different responses to identical therapies. In this review we discuss how the immune environment of tumors develops, the critical immune cell populations in advanced cancers, and how immune interventions can manipulate the immune environment of patients with pre-malignancies or advanced cancers to improve therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) is mainly considered a sexually transmitted disease, newborns exposed to the virus in the perinatal period can also be infected through mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. The aim of our study was to increase our understanding of neonatal oropharyngeal infection by HPV, trying to establish its frequency, mechanisms of infection and persistence through age 2 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a prospective, observational and descriptive study in a cohort of neonates born vaginally whose mothers carried HPV in the lower genital tract at the time of delivery. Tests for detection of HPV in amniotic fluid, venous cord blood and oropharyngeal secretions were performed in every neonate, and we conducted microbiological follow-up of infants colonized by HPV up to age 2 years. RESULTS The prevalence of oropharyngeal colonization at birth was 58.24%. In the 24-month follow-up, the proportions of clearance and persistence of HPV in the oropharynx were 94.34% and 5.66%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The results of this case series suggest that neonatal oropharyngeal colonization by HPV, while frequent in the postpartum period, is usually a self-limited process, and the main mechanism of infection transvaginal intrapartum vertical transmission. Although colonization in most neonates is transient and asymptomatic, the clinical significance of persistent carriage remains unknown.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination prevents cervical, head and neck, and anogenital cancers. However, global HPV vaccine coverage falls short of global targets and has seen unexpected and dramatic declines in some countries. This paper synthesizes the impact of HPV on the global burden of cancer and the potential benefit of HPV vaccination. Approximately 5% of the world's cancers are specifically attributed to HPV. While the greatest global burden of HPV is cervical cancers in low- and middle-income countries, HPV-associated head and neck cancers are increasing in high-income countries and have surpassed cervical cancer as the primary HPV-associated cancer in some countries. Therefore, it is also critical to improve gender-neutral HPV vaccination. Understanding the modifiable drivers of vaccine acceptance and uptake is important for increasing HPV vaccination. The Behavioural and Social Drivers of Vaccination framework is broadly applied to identify key factors associated with HPV vaccination including domains concerning practical issues, motivation, social processes, and thinking and feeling. Among the behavioural strategies available to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer, increasing HPV vaccination stands out as having unrealized potential to prevent disease, financial cost, and psychological distress. An understanding of the shifting burden of HPV and the factors associated with vaccination can be leveraged to regularly measure these factors, develop interventions to promote vaccine uptake, and improve global HPV vaccine coverage. Future research in diverse contexts is necessary to investigate the barriers and facilitators of global HPV vaccination.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a risk factor for head and neck cancers (HNC). HPV-related head and neck cancers are preventable through vaccination. This study aimed to assess the attitudes towards HPV vaccination among adults in Poland, with particular emphasis on preventing HPV-related HNC, as well as identifying factors associated with a willingness to vaccinate children against HPV. This cross-sectional survey was carried out in November 2021 on a nationwide, representative sample of 1082 adults in Poland. The computer-assisted web interview (CAWI) technique was used. Only 42.5% of respondents were aware that HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease. Less than one fourth of respondents (23.8%) indicated vaccination as an HPV infection prevention method and 51.9% of respondents correctly indicated HPV vaccine-eligible populations. Only 48.1% of respondents declared positive attitudes towards HPV vaccinations and declared that they would vaccinate their child against HPV. Males (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.11−1.85; p < 0.01), respondents who did not have children (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.04−2.14; p < 0.05), as well as those who had received a higher education (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.11−1.85; p < 0.01), had greater odds of indicating positive attitudes towards HPV vaccinations. This study revealed a low level of public awareness of HPV vaccination as a cancer prevention method in Poland.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse trends in incidence of oropharyngeal cancers (OPC) across Australia from 1982 to 2017 with implications for prevention. METHODS Data were obtained from the Australian Cancer Database (ACD) compiled at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Joinpoint analyses are presented. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A striking increase of age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of OPC by over 1.5 times: the most significant rise was between 2007 and 2017 with an annual percentage change (APC) of +5.24% (p<0.001). Slow but gradual growth of ASIR was observed among women with a statistically significant APC of +1.02% (p<0.001). Statistically significant bimodal increasing trends of APC were also observed in total ASIR of OPC. These rising trends are widely attributed to increased oral sex practices. Highest number of incident cases were found in patients aged 55 to 69 years old attributable to continued alcohol and tobacco exposure. Most common subsites affected were base of tongue (BOT) and "oropharynx" from 1982 to 2017. CONCLUSION OPC is rising rapidly across Australia, particularly in men. Whilst the national proportion of cases driven by HPV is not known, it is evident that vaccination is yet to have an impact.

Abstract
Objective: To assess evidence on the efficacy of adjuvant human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in patients treated for HPV-related disease across different susceptible organ sites. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies addressing the efficacy of adjuvant HPV vaccination on reducing the risk of recurrence of HPV-related preinvasive diseases. Results were reported as mean differences or pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Sixteen studies were identified for the final analysis. Overall, 21,472 patients with cervical dysplasia were included: 4132 (19.2%) received the peri-operative HPV vaccine, while 17,340 (80.8%) underwent surgical treatment alone. The recurrences of CIN 1+ (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.73; p = 0.001), CIN 2+ (OR 0.33, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.52; p < 0.0001), and CIN 3 (OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.13 to 0.59; p = 0.0009) were lower in the vaccinated than in unvaccinated group. Similarly, adjuvant vaccination reduced the risk of developing anal intraepithelial neoplasia (p = 0.005) and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (p = 0.004). No differences in anogenital warts and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia recurrence rate were observed comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Conclusions: Adjuvant HPV vaccination is associated with a reduced risk of CIN recurrence, although there are limited data regarding its role in other HPV-related diseases. Further research is warranted to shed more light on the role of HPV vaccination as adjuvant therapy after primary treatment.

Abstract
Head and neck carcinoma is one of the most common human malignancy types and it ranks as the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Nowadays, a great potential of microbiome research is observed in oncology-investigating the effect of oral microbiome in oncogenesis, occurrence of treatment side effects and response to anticancer therapies. The microbiome is a unique collection of microorganisms and their genetic material, interactions and products residing within the mucous membranes. The aim of this paper is to summarize current research on the oral microbiome and its impact on the development of head and neck cancer and radiation-induced oral mucositis. Human microbiome might determine an oncogenic effect by, among other things, inducing chronic inflammatory response, instigating cellular antiapoptotic signals, modulation of anticancer immunity or influencing xenobiotic metabolism. Influence of oral microbiome on radiation-induced oral mucositis is expressed by the production of additional inflammatory cytokines and facilitates progression and aggravation of mucositis. Exacerbated acute radiation reaction and bacterial superinfections lead to the deterioration of the patient's condition and worsening of the quality of life. Simultaneously, positive effects of probiotics on the course of radiation-induced oral mucositis have been observed. Understanding the impact on the emerging acute radiation reaction on the composition of the microflora can be helpful in developing a multifactorial model to forecast the course of radiation-induced oral mucositis. Investigating these processes will allow us to create optimized and personalized preventive measures and treatment aimed at their formation mechanism. Further studies are needed to better establish the structure of the oral microbiome as well as the dynamics of its changes before and after therapy. It will help to expand the understanding of the biological function of commensal and pathogenic oral microbiota in HNC carcinogenesis and the development of radiation-induced oral mucositis.
