Morphological and molecular characterization of Curvularia species from Iran, with description of two novel species and two new records. Mycologia 2025; 117:261-285. Abstract
Curvularia species exhibit a wide range of ecological roles, including plant, animal, or human pathogens, as well as epiphytes, saprophytes, or endophytes, predominantly associated with cultivated cereals. In this study, several fungal isolates with similar characteristics in the genus Curvularia were recovered from various poaceous hosts (Poales plants) in different locations in Iran during 2012‒2022. Based on the morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogeny of the translation elongation factor-1 alpha (TEF1), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-rDNA) genes, the studied isolates were assigned to five species, of which Curvularia caspica, sp. nov. and C. cyperi, sp. nov. are introduced as novel species and Curvularia nodulosa and C. oryzae are new records for Iran's mycobiota. Molecular studies revealed a closer relationship between one of the studied species (Curvularia sp.) and C. frankliniae. However, due to the absence of detailed morphological characteristics for C. frankliniae, morphological comparisons were not feasible. To precisely establish their phylogenetic position, more isolates need to be analyzed. Consequently, the studied species was identified as Curvularia sp. in this study. Additionally, a new clade, "papendorfii," was established to accommodate 11 species that share common morphological characteristics and form a distinct clade in phylogenetic analyses. The morphology, habitat, distribution, and evolutionary relationships of each species with other Curvularia species were analyzed, accompanied by detailed illustrations and descriptions. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights into the diversity and distribution of Curvularia species, enhancing our understanding of fungal ecology and taxonomy.

Abstract
Six collections of ascomycetes were obtained from samples collected from dead branches and leaves of Juglansregia in Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, China. By incorporating multigene phylogenetic analysis (ITS, LSU, rpb2, SSU, tef1-α, tub2) supplemented by morphological data, we establish two novel species, namely Helminthosporiumguizhouense and Nigrosporayunnanensis. In morphology, H.guizhouense can be distinguished from H.caespitosum by its narrower conidia (13-16 µm vs. 27.3-35.5 µm), and N.yunnanensis is characterized by black, globose conidia (16.2 × 14.4 µm). The phylogenetic results further substantiated them as novel taxa. The present study contributes to our comprehension of the range of fungi found in Juglansregia, thereby expanding our knowledge of the diversity of fungi within this host.

Abstract
The global diversity of fungi has been estimated between 2 to 11 million species, of which only about 155 000 have been named. Most fungi are invisible to the unaided eye, but they represent a major component of biodiversity on our planet, and play essential ecological roles, supporting life as we know it. Although approximately 20 000 fungal genera are presently recognised, the ecology of most remains undetermined. Despite all this diversity, the mycological community actively researches some fungal genera more commonly than others. This poses an interesting question: why have some fungal genera impacted mycology and related fields more than others? To address this issue, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 100 most cited fungal genera. A thorough database search of the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed was performed to establish which genera are most cited. The most cited 10 genera are Saccharomyces, Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Botrytis, Pichia, Cryptococcus and Alternaria. Case studies are presented for the 100 most cited genera with general background, notes on their ecology and economic significance and important research advances. This paper provides a historic overview of scientific research of these genera and the prospect for further research. Adhikary K, Banerjee P, Barman S, Bandyopadhyay B, Bagchi D. Nutritional Aspects, Chemistry Profile, Extraction Techniques of Lemongrass Essential Oil and It's Physiological Benefits. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN NUTRITION ASSOCIATION 2024; 43:183-200. [PMID: 37579058 DOI: 10.1080/27697061.2023.2245435] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/30/2023] [Revised: 07/01/2023] [Accepted: 08/02/2023] [Indexed: 08/16/2023]
Abstract
Lemongrass contains a variety of substances that are known to have antioxidant and disease-preventing properties, including essential oils, compounds, minerals, and vitamins. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Spp.) essential oil (LGEO) has been demonstrated to ameliorate diabetes and accelerate wound healing. A member of the Poaceae family, Lemongrass, a fragrant plant, is cultivated for the extraction of essential oils including myrcene and a mixture of geranial and neral isomers of citral monoterpenes. Active constituents in lemongrass essential oil are myrcene, followed by limonene and citral along with geraniol, citronellol, geranyl acetate, neral, and nerol, which are beneficial to human health. A large part of lemongrass' expansion is driven by the plant's huge industrial potential in the food, cosmetics, and medicinal sectors. A great deal of experimental and modeling study was conducted on the extraction of essential oils. Using Google Scholar and PubMed databases, a systematic review of the literature covering the period from 1996 to 2022 was conducted, in accordance with the PRISMA declaration. There were articles on chemistry, biosynthesis, extraction techniques and worldwide demand of lemongrass oil. We compared the effectiveness of several methods of extracting lemongrass essential oil, including solvent extraction, supercritical CO2 extraction, steam distillation, hydrodistillation (HD), and microwave aided hydrodistillation (MAHD). Moreover, essential oils found in lemongrass and its bioactivities have a significant impact on human health. This manuscript demonstrates the different extraction techniques of lemongrass essential oil and its physiological benefits on diabetic wound healing, tissue repair and regeneration, as well as its immense contribution in ameliorating arthritis and joint pain.Key teaching pointsThe international market demand prediction and the pharmacological benefits of the Lemongrass essential oil have been thoroughly reported here. This article points out that different extraction techniques yield different percentages of citral and other secondary metabolites from lemon grass, for example, microwave assisted hydrodistillation and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction process yields more citral. This article highlights the concept and application of lemongrass oil in aromatherapy, joint-pain, and arthritis. Moreover, this manuscript includes a discussion about the effect of lemongrass oil on diabetic wound healing and tissue regeneration - that paves the way for further research.

Abstract
Despite being a small island, Sri Lanka is rich in fungal diversity. Most of the fungi from Sri Lanka have been identified as pathogens of vegetables, fruits, and plantation crops to date. The pleosporalean genus Curvularia (Dothideomycetes) includes phytopathogenic, saprobic, endophytic, and human/animal opportunistic pathogenic fungal species. The majority of the plant-associated Curvularia species are known from poaceous hosts. During the current study, 22 geographical locations of the country were explored and collections were made from 10 different poaceous hosts. Morphology and molecular phylogeny based on three loci, including nuclear internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 with 5.8S nrDNA (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gapdh), and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1) supported the description of two new species of fungi described herein as C. aurantia sp. nov. and C. vidyodayana sp. nov. Moreover, novel host-fungal association records for C. chiangmaiensis, C. falsilunata, C. lonarensis, C. plantarum, and C. pseudobrachyspora are updated herein. In addition, five species within the genus Curvularia, viz., C. asiatica, C. geniculata, C. lunata, C. muehlenbeckiae, and C. verruculosa represent new records of fungi from Sri Lanka. Abstract
During an investigation of fungal diversity on fruit trees in Guizhou Province, 23 Cladosporium strains were isolated from various locations in Guizhou Province. Culture characteristics, morphology and molecular phylogenetic analysis of three genetic markers, namely, the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) of the rDNA, partial fragments of actin (act), and the translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-ɑ) loci were used to characterize these isolates. Seven new Cladosporium species and new host records for five other species were introduced, with detailed descriptions and illustrations. This study showed that there is a rich diversity of Cladosporium spp. in fruit trees in Guizhou Province.

Abstract
Pleocatenata, a new genus, is introduced with its type species, Pleocatenatachiangraiensis, which was isolated from withered twigs of two medicinal plants, Clerodendrumquadriloculare (Blanco) Merr (Verbenaceae) and Tarennastellulata (Hook.f.) Ridl (Rubiaceae) in northern Thailand. The genus is characterized by mononematous, septate, brown or dark brown conidiophores, monotretic conidiogenous cells and catenate, obclavate, olivaceous to blackish brown conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU, SSU, tef1-α, rpb2 and ITS sequence data showed Pleocatenata forms a distinct phylogenetic lineage in Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes. Therefore, we treat Pleocatenata as Pleosporales genera incertae sedis based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Descriptions and illustrations of the new taxa are provided, and it is compared with morphologically similar genera.

Abstract
Background Pestalotiopsis-like fungi are widely distributed in many plants and include endophytes, pathogens and saprobes. Five strains of Neopestalotiopsis were isolated from diseased leaves of Rhapisexcelsa (Principes, Palmae), Rhododendronsimsii and Rho.championiae (Ericales, Ericaceae) and Erythropalumscandens (Santalales, Olacaceae) in southern China. New information Based on morphology and multi-gene (ITS, tub2, tef1) phylogeny, our five strains of Neopestalotiopsis represent two new species and one extant species. Descriptions, illustrations and notes are also provided for the new species.

Abstract
Background Thunbergiagrandiflora belongs to the family Acanthaceae and is a widely distributed dicotyledonous plant in tropical and subtropical regions. Three isolates of Allophoma (Dothideomycetes, Pleosporales, Didymellaceae) were collected from leaves of T.grandiflora in Guangxi Province, China. New information Phylogenetic analyses of a combined ITS–LSU–rpb2–tub2 dataset indicate that one of our three strains represents an undescribed species with close affinity to A.minor and the other two strains clustered amongst other isolates of A.pterospermicola. Evidence from morphology and sequence analysis indicates that GUCC 2070.7 is a new species that we introduce here as A.thunbergiae. This is the first report about taxa of Allophoma from this host plant.

Abstract
Background Two hyphomycetous species were collected from leaves of Smilaxchina (Liliales, Smilacaceae) and Cremastraappendiculata (Asparagales, Orchidaceae). ITS barcoding indicated that they belong to the genus Zasmidium. New information Morphological data in combination with molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, LSU and rpb2 confirmed that our Chinese strains represented a new species, Zasmidiumliboense and a new record of Z.citri-griseum.

Abstract
Curvularia is a Pleosporalean monophyletic genus with a great diversity of species, including relevant phytopathogenic, animal and human pathogenic fungi. However, their microscopic identification is difficult due to overlapping morphological features amongst species. In recent years, multi-locus sequence analysis using the ITS region of the rDNA and fragments of the genes gapdh and tef1 revealed numerous cryptic species, especially in isolates that commonly produced 3-septate conidia. Therefore, based on sequence analysis of the above-mentioned DNA barcodes recommended for species delineation in Curvularia, we propose three novel species, C.paraverruculosa, C.suttoniae and C.vietnamensis, isolated from soil, human clinical specimens and plant material, respectively, collected in different countries. These new species are morphologically characterised and illustrated in the present study. Curvulariaparaverruculosa differs from its counterparts, C.americana and C.verruculosa, mainly by its narrower conidia. Curvulariasuttoniae and C.vietnamensis are closely related to C.petersonii, but the former two have larger conidia.
