Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Visual color determination in clinics or dental offices should take place under reproducible environmental conditions. To reduce false tooth color measurements, daylight and illumination lamps (5000-7500 K) have been recommended. Those can be used either as stationary or mobile handheld illumination units. However, depending on the manufacturer, the handheld lights use different illuminance brightness, and whether the choice of unit affects shade selection is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether the mobile handheld light-emitting diode (LED) lighting unit shows a significantly better result in visual color determination than the conventional reference lighting unit. MATERIAL AND METHODS Trained preclinical dental students (N=23) with a mean ±standard deviation age of 24 ±5 years participated in the study. Two color differentiation lamps (Smile lite 1620lx and Dialite Color 4450lx) (SL and DC) were each placed at a 15-cm distance to determine the color of the shade tabs (templates, N=10) with the VITA Linear Guide 3D Master in a double-blinded study. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, polarization filters were used with the Smile lite lamp. RESULTS Of N=220 shade determinations each, 31.8% (SL) and 33.2% (DC) were correct; the median (ΔE00) and interquartile range were 0.96 (±3.32) for SL and 1.35 (±3.28) for DC. The differences between the groups were not statistically significant (P=.67). CONCLUSIONS The results show that the use of the mobile LED illumination unit did not improve color determination compared with the reference illumination. The different illumination intensities of 980 lux (SL) with a polarizing filter or 1500 lux (DC) did not have a positive effect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effects of four toothpastes on the color stability of in-office bleached tooth specimens were determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated an experimental toothpaste (EXP) and three commercially available toothpastes: Colgate Optic White (OPW), Aquafresh White & Protect (AWP), and Crest 3D White (CDW). OPW, AWP, and CDW contained inorganic abrasives, whereas EXP and AWP contained sodium polyphosphate. Forty-eight randomly selected human-extracted maxillary central incisors were bleached and brushed twice daily over 30 days. We analyzed the final color difference (ΔE*ab, ΔE00 , ΔWID ), arithmetic average surface roughness (Ra) of the enamel measured on days 0 and 30, and scanning electron microscopy images of enamel surfaces and toothpastes. ΔE*ab, ΔE00 , ΔWID , and Ra were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS ΔE*ab and ΔE00 values were significantly lower after toothbrushing with EXP, OPW, and CDW than with AWP. OPW induced the greatest positive ΔWID . Ra was significantly increased by OPW and CDW, but slightly increased by AWP, with cube-like particles, and EXP, with no particle-like structures. CONCLUSIONS Only EXP stabilized the color of bleached teeth without increasing the enamel surface roughness. Sodium polyphosphate with approximately 10 phosphate groups was effective at removing stains. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The effect of toothpaste on the color stability of bleached teeth depends on the constituting abrasives and chemical components. Polyphosphoric acid has different stain-removal effects depending on its degree of polymerization. Additionally, although certain types of abrasives may be effective for color stability, they also increase the surface roughness of the enamel.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of different shade selection techniques and determine the matching success of crown restorations fabricated using digital shade selection techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Teeth numbers 11 and 21 were prepared on a typodont model. For the #11 tooth, six different crowns were fabricated with randomly selected colors and set as the target crowns. The following four test groups were established: Group C, where the visual shade selection was performed using the Vita 3D Master Shade Guide and the group served as the control; Group Ph, where the shade selection was performed under the guidance of dental photography; Group S, where the shade selection was performed by measuring the target tooth color using a spectrophotometer; and Group I, where the shade selection was performed by scanning the test specimens and target crowns using an intraoral scanner. Based on the test groups, 24 crowns were fabricated using different shade selection techniques. The ΔE values were calculated according to the CIEDE2000 (2:1:1) formula. The collected data were analyzed by means of a one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS For the four test groups (Groups C, Ph, S, and I), the following mean ΔE values were obtained: 2.74, 3.62, 2.13, and 3.5, respectively. No significant differences were found among the test groups. CONCLUSION Although there was no statistically significant difference among the shade selection techniques, Group S had relatively lower ΔE values. Moreover, according to the test results, the spectrophotometer shade selection technique may provide more successful clinical results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although the presence of a chairside CAD/CAM system in the dental office saves time and cost, it deprives the dentist from the dental technologist' skills and experience. The dentist now has to gain and acquire knowledge and skills about how to finish, characterize, stain, and glaze ceramic restorations. The main objectives of this article is to teach novel and reproducible techniques for surface color, texture, glaze and polish for either the chairside or laboratory fabricated indirect ceramic restoration. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS A protocol for intraoral characterization of monolithic ceramics; the "Triple R" protocol for tooth color mimicking was followed. It consist of three steps: (1) "Recognize" tooth color shapes, (2) "Record" the present color shapes in the patient dentition by drawing a color map for the color shapes extension and determine which luster paste stain to be used for replicating them, and (3) "Replicate" intraorally the recorded color shapes guided by the adjacent natural teeth using low fusing ceramic pastes (shades and stains) for color shape replication. Also, the final touch technique was followed to shape, texture and final surface finish of dental restorations. It is composed of 5 basic levels which we call dental "micro-esthetics that define shape, texture, and surface luster. CONCLUSIONS Following the steps of both; the "Triple R" protocol and the "FINAL TOUCH" technique will help to reproduce the final shade of the restoration to create the illusion of a natural tooth to the observer. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This article shows how combining two practical methodologies to record and replicate both color shapes and surface texture of natural teeth may extend mimicking, that is, step by step natural tooth shade beyond the limitations of the available commercial shade guides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shade determination is a critical step for the fabrication of a satisfactory restoration. Visual shade selection with conventional shade guides is subjective and influenced by variables related to light, observer, and object. Shade selection devices have been introduced to provide subjective and quantitative shade values. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the color difference for shade selection with visual and instrumental methods. METHODS An initial search was conducted on databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) in addition to a manual search through references of identified articles. Studies comparing the accuracy of visual and instrumental shade selection based on ΔΕ were included in data synthesis. Mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the effect size for global and subgroup meta-analysis using the inverse variance weighted method and random-effects model (P ˂ 0.05). Results were presented as forest plots. RESULTS The authors identified 1776 articles from the initial search. Seven in vivo studies were included in the qualitative analysis of which six studies were included in the meta-analysis. For the global meta-analysis, the pooled mean (95% CI) was - 1.10 (- 1.92, - 0.27). Test for overall effect showed that instrumental methods were significantly more accurate than visual methods with significantly less ΔΕ (P = 0.009). Test for subgroup difference showed that the type of instrumental shade selection method used had a significant effect on accuracy (P ˂ 0.001). Instrumental methods including spectrophotometer, digital camera, and smartphone showed significantly better accuracy compared with visual shade selection (P ˂ 0.05). The greatest mean difference was found between the smartphone and visual method with a mean (95% CI) of - 2.98 (- 3.37, - 2.59) with P ˂ 0.001 followed by digital camera and spectrophotometer. There was no significant difference in accuracy between IOS and visual shade selection (P = 1.00). CONCLUSIONS Instrumental shade selection with a spectrophotometer, digital camera, and smartphone showed significantly better shade matching compared with a conventional shade guide, whereas IOS did not improve the shade matching significantly compared with shade guides. Abstract
Tooth shade determination methods for evaluating the effectiveness of whitening products at home are limited. In this study, an iPhone app for personalized tooth shade determination was developed. While capturing dental photographs in selfie mode before and after whitening, the app can maintain consistent illumination and tooth appearance conditions that affect tooth color measurement. An ambient light sensor was used to standardize the illumination conditions. To maintain consistent tooth appearance conditions determined by appropriately opening the mouth, facial landmark detection, an artificial intelligence technique that estimates key face parts and outlines, was used. The effectiveness of the app in ensuring uniform tooth appearance was investigated through color measurements of the upper incisors of seven participants via photographs captured in succession. The coefficients of variation for incisors L*, a*, and b* were less than 0.0256 (95% CI, 0.0173-0.0338), 0.2748 (0.1596-0.3899), and 0.1053 (0.0078-0.2028), respectively. To examine the feasibility of the app for tooth shade determination, gel whitening after pseudo-staining by coffee and grape juice was performed. Consequently, whitening results were evaluated by monitoring the ∆Eab color difference values (1.3 unit minimum). Although tooth shade determination remains a relative quantification method, the proposed method can support evidence-based selection of whitening products.

Abstract
Background The ceramics industry produces porcelain pastes using a controlled ratio of water and porcelain powder. Two methods are used to produce a dental porcelain paste: one-step mixing or incremental mixing. Objective To evaluate the optical properties of a feldspathic dental ceramic using two different ceramic paste preparation methods using a Bayesian approach. Materials and Methods Two groups of feldspathic porcelain discs, an incremental mixing group (n = 40) and a one-step mixing group (n = 40), were assessed. Groups were evaluated using spectrophotometry, and the translucency parameter (TP) of each sample was calculated. Surfaces were characterized by AFM and SEM. Statistical analysis was performed using a Bayesian approach. Results Translucency parameter values of the incremental mixing group ranged from 1.65 to 3.41, while values for the one-step mixing group ranged from 3.62 to 5.74, this difference being statistically significant. The lowest roughness was obtained on the surface of discs in the one-step mixing group. Conclusions Feldspathic porcelain with lower translucency and higher roughness was obtained using the incremental mixture method.

Abstract
The application of digital imaging to color measurement is more and more extensive, which also provides new ideas for gemology. In this paper, the single-factor experiment method and orthogonal experiment design are used to study the influence parameters of the digital imaging system (DIS) on gem color measurement. Among them, the illuminance has the most significant impact on the measurement results, followed by the exposure time, and the change of the measurement distance has an insignificant impact on the results; through range analysis and analysis of variance, the most suitable measurement parameters for red jadeite are 1600 lx, 12,500 μs, 25 cm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of intraoral instruments used for shade determination compared to visual shade selection (VSS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 20 subjects and 10 observers, balanced by gender, participated in the study. Observers performed VSS of the upper right central incisor from each subject. Instrumental shade determination of the same teeth was performed using a spectrophotometer (Easyshade V) and intraoral scanners (CEREC Omnicam, Primescan, Trios 3 and Trios 4). Vita Classical shade nomenclature was used to record the shade designation for all instruments and VSS. The accuracy of the instruments was determined by comparing the instrument readings with the most frequent visual shade selected. The percentage of accuracy was obtained by comparing the number of agreements with the number of comparisons. The percentage of repeatability was obtained by comparing the number of repeated shades with the number of shade measurements in each group. Accuracy was compared using Cochran Q test followed by pairwise comparisons using multiple McNemar's tests with Bonferroni correction. Repeatability of the instruments was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS Omnicam showed a significant lower accuracy than the other instruments (p < 0.05). No statistical difference on repeatability was found among the different instruments (p > 0.05). It was not found any statistical differences for VSS accuracy among the observers (p = 0.437) and between genders (p = 0.867). CONCLUSION Instrumental repeatability (≥75%) and similar accuracy between the best performed instruments (69%-77.5%) and the observers performance (65%-90%) supports the use of high-performance instruments for dental shade determination. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Most instruments (Easyshade V, Primescan, Trios 3, and Trios 4) showed similar accuracy performance to observers in the VSS.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to compare the color change of the Giomer resin composite (Beautifil-Bulk) by using photographs obtained with a smartphone (iPhone 6S) associated with Adobe Photoshop software (digital method), with the spectrophotometric method (Vita Easyshade) after immersion in different pigment solutions. Materials and Methods Twenty resin composite samples with a diameter of 15.0 mm and thickness of 1.0 mm were confectioned in A2 color (n = 5). Photographs and initial color readings were performed with a smartphone and spectrophotometer, respectively. Then, samples were randomly divided and subjected to cycles of immersion in distilled water (control), açai, Coke, and tomato sauce, 3 times a day, 20 minutes for 7 days. Later, new photographs and color readings were taken. Results The analysis (2-way analysis of variance, Holm-Sidak, p < 0.05) demonstrated no statistical difference (p < 0.005) between the methods in all groups. Similar color changes were observed for all pigment solutions when using the spectrophotometric method. For the digital method, all color changes were clinically unacceptable, with distilled water and tomato sauce similar to each other and with statistical differences (p < 0.005) for Coke and açai. Conclusions Only the tomato sauce produced a color change above the acceptability threshold using both methods of color assessment. The spectrophotometric and digital methods produce different patterns of color change. According to our results, the spectrophotometric method is more recommended in color change assessment.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the teeth discoloration potential of Biodentine. An electronic search in six databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, LILACS, SCIELO, Web of Science, and Scopus) was conducted by three independent reviewers to identify eligible articles. The following search terms were used: ((discolo*, staining potential, color, colour, or spectrophotomet*), (teeth or tooth), and (Biodentine)). Methodology following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines was adopted for this investigation. At the end of the selection process, 30 articles were identified as eligible, of which 14 in vitro studies were included in this systematic review. Nine of the included studies evaluated the discoloration potential of Biodentine in the presence of blood. Within the limitations of this review, teeth discoloration using Biodentine is highly expected when material is placed in direct contact with blood during dental procedures. In the absence of blood, Biodentine causes less teeth color changes than MTA-based materials, but it is still unclear what clinically relevant results could be expected regarding the discoloration frequency and intensity induced by Biodentine.

Abstract
One of the important factors for creating a beautiful smile is the color of the teeth, which for most people has a more important role than anatomical characteristics. The exact reproduction of the color of the tooth affects the appearance and psycho-emotional state of the patient. The purpose of this work is to review domestic and foreign literature on methods for determining the color of teeth. Methods for determining color are divided into visual, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, digital photo analysis and computer method. The most common in the practice of a dentist is visual, which is based on comparing the examined tooth with color templates. Determination of the color of teeth using scales does not give a reliable result, which is due to the small number of shades in the colors, the phenomenon of metamerism, the impossibility of converting the obtained data into digital values, etc. The hardware method for determining the color of teeth compensates for the disadvantages of the visual and has a high adaptability, which requires many interrelated factors. Due to the complexity and high cost, the devices are used mainly for research purposes. Currently, innovative methods for determining the color of teeth, based on digital and computer analysis, are being actively developed. Thus, hardware methods for determining the color of teeth significantly increase the accuracy of choosing the shade of a future aesthetic restoration or orthopedic construction, excluding subjective factors, however, they require mandatory certification. Correct color assessment and identification helps to reduce costly re-treatments and reduce warranty costs. Despite this, visual methods using scales remain in demand among practicing doctors, due to their low cost and ease of use. The accuracy of determining the color of teeth in this case depends on the professionalism of the dentist, as well as on the correctness of the photo protocol.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To answer the question: "Does the peroxide gel application regimen (single application vs. renewal) influence the efficacy and the tooth sensitivity outcomes of in-office tooth bleaching?" METHODS The search was done in Pubmed, Cochrane, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE in February 2021 (updated in July 2021). Randomized clinical trials (RCT) comparing the single application vs. the renewal protocols of HP were included. The meta-analyses were performed for the objective (ΔEab ), subjective (ΔSGU) color changes, and absolute risk of tooth sensitivity (TS). Heterogeneity was evaluated using Q test (I2 ). Cochrane Collaboration tool assessed the risk of bias (RoB). The GRADE evaluated the certainty of evidence. RESULTS Five RCT studies remained. Two studies showed high RoB, and three presented some concerns. No significant differences were observed between the protocols in terms of the ΔEab , ΔSGU, and TS. ΔEab exhibited substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 87%), while ΔSGU (I2 = 60%) and the TS (I2 = 62%) presented a moderate one. The certainty of evidence was considered low or very low, depending on the variable response and the evaluation time. CONCLUSION The application regimen (single vs. renewal of HP) did not impact color change or the absolute risk of TS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The renewal of bleaching gel during the in-office appointment may not be necessary. However, there is at least a low certainty of evidence. Because of this, further randomized clinical trials with appropriate methodology on this topic are encouraged.

Abstract
PURPOSE To systematically review past studies to determine the effect of various solutions on the color of denture teeth, thus answering the question in regards to which type of denture teeth has the best optical properties after exposure to various solutions. The method of measuring the color of artificial teeth was also evaluated as a secondary outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search of studies that quantitatively investigated the influence of immersion solutions on the color change of denture teeth was conducted. Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus databases were searched from 1997 to April 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used during article selection. Data regarding the effect of immersion solutions, accelerated aging and surface treatments on color change were gathered. Methodologies used to assess optical properties were also summarized and compared. The modified CONSORT checklist was used to determine the risk of bias of past studied included in this review. RESULTS One hundred thirty-three studies were identified after removing duplicates. Forty-one studies were selected for full-text analysis, and 35 remaining papers met the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in this systematic review. Thirty-two in vitro studies and 3 in vivo studies were included in the review. All studies reported that immersion in various solutions has a significant influence on the change in color and optical properties of denture teeth. However, the discoloration of denture teeth is still clinically acceptable in most studies. Exposure to various solutions also affected the translucency parameter of denture teeth. Most studies also investigated the surface roughness and hardness along with the optical properties, and reported that immersion cycles did not cause changes in surface roughness of denture teeth, while hardness was affected. The optical properties of PMMA denture teeth have been studied extensively, whereas that of CAD/CAM and 3D printed denture teeth is limited. CONCLUSIONS Color stability of CAD/CAM milled denture teeth is comparable to conventional PMMA denture teeth. There are contradictory findings in terms of color stability of 3D printed denture teeth as compared to conventional PMMA denture teeth. Staining by coffee is worst among the common beverages and solutions investigated. Denture teeth can show color changes after immersion in staining beverages as early as one week. The degree of discoloration of denture teeth after immersion is time dependent, with the larger extent in the initial phase.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite developments of dental shade selection methods, shade selection is still a challenge affecting esthetic outcomes. The purpose of this review was to discuss visual and digital shade taking methods, related effective factors and conditions, and their accuracy and precision to find out the most accurate, precise shade selection method available in dentistry. OVERVIEW The key terms of accuracy, background, ceramic, color, colorimeter, color analysis, color science, color measurement, color measuring instrument, color matching, composite resin, dental/tooth shade guide, digital camera, esthetics, imaging, imaging application/program/ software, intraoral scanner, light source, photography, precision, shade, shade matching/ determination/prediction/reproduction/selection, shade taking device, spectrophotometer, spectrophotometry, tooth color measurement, tooth color/shade, and visual perception were used separately and jointly to detect related English-language articles published between January 1, 1985, and January 1, 2021. Electronic/non-electronic searches of Google Scholar/PubMed/Scopus/Web of Science were accomplished. Consequently, 249 articles were considered. Accordingly, the digital methods show higher accuracy and precision compared to the visual methods while requiring to be enhanced regarding accuracy to achieve ideal shade taking results. CONCLUSIONS Dental spectrophotometers provide the highest overall accuracy and precision among different shade selection methods while needing clinical setting to control related effective factors/conditions and technological improvement to perform optimally. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Different factors can affect the accuracy and precision of tooth shade selection methods and devices. The understanding of these effective factors may lead to a standard shade taking protocol using accurate, precise methods and devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the hue angles that provide the optimal perception of tooth whitening. METHODS Thirty-three male/female adult observers with normal color vision were recruited to assess teeth images on a color calibrated display. Images of teeth were generated which simulated color changes in each of eight hue directions in the CIE a*b* plane, each equi-distant from a baseline tooth color. Using a paired comparison study design, observers were asked to indicate which of two images had whiter teeth. The data were converted into an interval scale using Thurstone's Law of Comparative Judgment. The relationship between the hue angles and the scores was modeled by curve fitting. RESULTS The optimal hues were found in a region between green and blue in the CIE a*b chart. When the tooth color travels in an optimal hue direction, the same amount of color change will result in a greater change in whiteness perception than when traveling in other hue directions. CONCLUSIONS The optimal hues for tooth whitening were identified from the visual perception study. The most effective tooth whitening direction is to change tooth color towards the greenish-blue hue direction. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study gives clinicians and researchers a better understanding of tooth color hue effects in tooth whiteness perception.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the long-term outcomes of in-office bleaching with violet LED light (LED) alone or combined with carbamide (CP) or hydrogen (HP) peroxides. METHODS Volunteers of a previous short-term study were recalled for 6- and 12-month follow-ups, according to the following interventions (n = 18/group): LED, CP, LED/CP, HP, and LED/HP. The objective color (ΔEab, ΔE00) and whiteness index (ΔWID) changes were calculated applying the CIELab coordinates' values obtained using a spectrophotometer. A visual shade guide determined the tooth's subjective color change (ΔSGU). Data were submitted to one-way ANOVA or Welch's ANOVA, following appropriate post hoc tests (α = 5%). RESULTS The LED and CP groups exhibited the lowest ΔEab, ΔE00, and ΔSGU (p < 0.05), but the LED group displayed a significantly lower ΔWID. After 12 months, the LED/CP group presented a higher ΔEab and ΔE00 than the CP group (p < 0.05). ΔEab, ΔE00, ΔSGU, or ΔWID means did not differ statistically between the LED/CP and HP groups. The LED/HP group presented a higher ΔE00 than the HP group, regardless of the time. CONCLUSIONS The bleaching efficacy of LED alone was significantly lower compared to the LED/CP and HP-containing protocols. After 12 months, the LED/CP and HP groups did not differ in bleaching efficacy. LED irradiation only increased the objective color change of bleaching gels. CLINICAL RELEVANCE LED alone promoted a long-term perceptible bleaching, but not compatible with that of high-concentrated HP. The bleaching outcomes of violet irradiation to 37% CP were maintained over time, with LED/CP demonstrating comparable results to HP even after 12 months. Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The predoctoral dental curriculum includes didactic lectures, demonstrations, and training on shade-matching techniques and protocols. However, a significant percentage of esthetic failures are still observed clinically. An assessment is required to determine whether reevaluation and modification of this training protocol would help future dental practitioners better perceive and communicate the dental shade. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate dental students' knowledge of and skill in shade selection and effective prescription writing before and after educational training with 3 different shade guides. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty predoctoral dental students (interns) who had completed their academic program and were undergoing clinical training were selected. After excluding color vision deficiency, the study participants were first asked to evaluate the shade of the right maxillary central incisor of 5 patient participants by using 3 different shade guides (Vitapan Classical, Vitapan 3D-MASTER, Chromascop) under standardized conditions. They were then asked to write an esthetic prescription, communicating the shade to a dental laboratory technician. A dental faculty member evaluated the baseline control shade for each participant, and a standardized prescription format was written. This was used as a reference by a dental laboratory technician to score the intern's prescription as clear, unclear, poor, or illegible. After the assessment, focused small group learning with lectures, clinical demonstrations, and case-based discussion was provided to the interns on shade assessment over 10 to 15 days. All the interns were reassessed for their visual shade perception and prescription writing after a month's interval. The mean percentage agreement, mean percentage shade match, and mean color difference between the shade selected and the control shade for each of the 5 participants, with all 3 shade guides, were evaluated along with the prescription scoring before and after the educational training. Statistical comparison of before and after values were made by using the paired-sample z-test for percentage agreement versus disagreement among the interns for the shade selected, paired t test for mean percentage agreement, mean percentage shade match, and mean color difference. The repeated measure ANOVA test was used for the prescription scorings (α=.05). RESULTS A significant difference in prescription scoring (P<.001) was observed. A significant difference in the percentage shade match (P<.01) for all 3 shade guides and mean percentage agreement for Chromascop and Vita 3D-MASTER (P<.05) were observed. A nonsignificant mean color difference between the shade selected by the intern and the baseline shade was observed. CONCLUSIONS A significant difference in prescription scoring was observed after training, along with a higher percentage shade match and percentage agreement. This indicated a need to reconsider the educational training provided for dental shade assessment and communication and to implement better protocols in the dental curriculum.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of pH of bleaching agent, photo-irradiation time or application times on bleaching action using hematoporphyrin-stained papers (HSPs) and artificially stained bovine-teeth (BT). 23% H2O2 with pH 5.5, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 were applied on the specimens. HSP was photo-irradiated for 1, 3 and 5 min. BT were photo-irradiated for 10 min and the bleaching was repeated ten times (n=10). CIE L*a*b* of the specimens were measured before and after the procedure. Data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA followed by multiple comparisons with Bonferroni correction. For the HSP, longer irradiation time and higher pH yielded significantly higher color difference (ΔE). As for BT, increasing application times and higher pH resulted in higher ΔE. It was concluded that the pH of the bleaching agent significantly improved the bleaching effect with increased photo-irradiation time for HSP and with an increase of repeated application times for BT.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to compare a 2D and 3D color system concerning a variety of statistical and graphical methods to assess validity and reliability of color measurements, and provide guidance on when to use which system and how to interpret color distance measures, including ΔE and d(0M1). Tooth color was recorded before bleaching treatment, after 14 days, and again after 6 months. VITAPAN® Classical (2D) and VITA-3D-Master® (3D) served as reference systems. Results Concerning repeated measurements, the 2D system was superior to the 3D system, both visually and electronically in terms of ΔE and d(OM1), for statistics of agreement and reliability. All four methods showed strong patterns in Bland-Altman plots. In the 3D system, hue was less reliable than lightness and chroma, which was more pronounced visually than electronically. The smallest detectable color difference varied among the four methods used, and was most favorable in the electronic 2D system. Comparing the methods, the agreement between the 2D and 3D system in terms of ΔE was not good. The reliability of the visual and electronic method was essentially the same in the 2D and 3D systems; this comparability is fair to good. Clinical relevance The 3D system may confuse human raters and even electronic devices. The 2D system is the simple and best choice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of different intraoral scanners on shade determination. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten different shades of Vita Mark II blocks were used. A disc-shape specimen (10 mm in diameter and 1 mm thick) per ceramic block was fabricated. Ten color measurements per specimen were performed by each instrument (Vita Easyshade V [control], 3shape Trios, Cerec Omnicam, Cerec Primescan) and recorded in Vita Classic color system. The number of correct shade match per instrument for each shade was recorded. Instrumental accuracy was compared using Cochran Q test and repeatability was analyzed using Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the instrumental accuracy for shade determination (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the Easyshade V (78%) and the 3Shape Trios (66%) (p > 0.05), with the latter being similar to the other scanners Primescan(63%) and Omnicam (57%) (p > 0.05). No significant difference was found (p > 0.05) when different shades were evaluated by the same instrument. Similar repeatability was found for the different devices, ranging from 44.3% for Easyshade to 51.9% for Omnicam. CONCLUSION The evaluated instruments showed less than expected repeatability and accuracy on measuring different dental shades. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using instrumental shade determination, which should be accompanied by experienced human visual assessment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The outcome of this study might help clinicians evaluate the performance of intraoral scanners as a shade matching tool.

Abstract
Background/purpose Color errors associated with the visual color duplication approach for ceramic laminate veneers are still challenging in esthetic dentistry. The aim of this study is to evaluate color errors generated during traditional visual shade matching approach. Materials and methods Eighteen stooth-shaped veneer discs (shade A2 and 0.7 mm in thickness) were fabricated using six veneer materials. The veneer specimens placed on five extracted teeth with nominal shade A2 formed veneer-tooth combinations. Color coordinates of the A2 shade tab, the extracted teeth, and the veneer-tooth combinations were measured using a spectrophotometer. Then, the veneers were reduced to 0.5 mm, and 0.3 mm in thickness consecutively. Color measurements were performed repeatedly. Color differences of the extracted teeth to veneer-tooth combinations (ΔEt-v), veneer-tooth combinations to shade tab (ΔEv-s), and translucency parameter (TP) values were calculated and analyzed using Two-way ANOVA. Results ΔEt-v ranged from 2.0937 to 5.0603 (mean of 3.1833±1.5485). Mean of ΔEv-s was 4.0103±1.8508. ΔEt-v and ΔEv-s values were significantly influenced by veneer material and thickness (P<0.05). TP values decreased gradually with the lessening of veneers thickness. Conclusion Acceptable color duplication of ceramic veneers cannot be achieved by routine visual shade replica protocols, when the thickness of veneers is less than 0.7 mm. Specified color matching standards for the ceramic veneers are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluated the reproducibility of electronic color determination system evaluations of the marginal gingiva, which could be important for adhesive cervical fillings or prosthetic restorations that imitate the gingiva. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 50 subjects, the L*, a*, and b* color coordinates were evaluated five times at a point in the marginal area of a central incisor using different electronic color determination systems: (SP) Shadepilot, (ES) Easyshade, (CE) Crystaleye, and (SV) X-Rite. The mean color difference (ΔE) and its standard deviation between the five measurements from each participant were calculated separately for each device. Further ICC for interdevice reliability was determined. RESULTS The L*, a*, and b* color coordinates and ΔE values differed significantly among the systems (p < 0.001). Within each patient and measurement system, ΔE ranged from 1.4 to 3.2 (SD 1.1-2.5), L* from 2.6 to 5.7 (SD 2.6-5.7), a* from 11.9 to 21.3 (SD 3.6-3.9), and b* from 15.1 to 28.9 (SD 1.7-4.3). Interdevice reliability ranged between 0.675 and 0.807. CONCLUSIONS Color determination of the marginal gingiva using the electronic tooth color determination systems tested herein showed limited reproducibility. The results obtained with the different measurement systems differed enormously. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results show that the electronic color measurement devices tested allow no high reproducible determination of color coordinates of the marginal gingiva.

Abstract
Objective This study evaluated the clinical effect of violet LED light on in-office bleaching used alone or combined with 37% carbamide peroxide (CP) or 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Methodology A total of 100 patients were divided into five groups (n=20): LED, LED/CP, CP, LED/HP and HP. Colorimetric evaluation was performed using a spectrophotometer (ΔE, ΔL, Δa, Δb) and a visual shade guide (ΔSGU). Calcium (Ca)/phosphorous (P) ratio was quantified in the enamel microbiopsies. Measurements were performed at baseline (T 0 ), after bleaching (T B ) and in the 14-day follow-up (T 14 ). At each bleaching session, a visual scale determined the absolute risk (AR) and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS). Data were evaluated by one-way (ΔE, Δa, ΔL, Δb), two-way repeated measures ANOVA (Ca/P ratio), and Tukey post-hoc tests. ΔSGU and TS were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney, and AR by Chi-Squared tests (a=5%). Results LED produced the lowest ΔE (p<0.05), but LED/HP promoted greater ΔE, ΔSGU and Δb (T 14 ) than HP (p<0.05). No differences were observed in ΔE and ΔSGU for LED/CP and HP groups (p>0.05). ΔL and Δa were not influenced by LED activation. After bleaching, LED/CP exhibited greater Δb than CP (p>0.05), but no differences were found between these groups at T 14 (p>0.05). LED treatment promoted the lowest risk of TS (16%), while HP promoted the highest (94.4%) (p<0.05). No statistical differences of risk of TS were found for CP (44%), LED/CP (61%) and LED/HP (88%) groups (p>0.05). No differences were found in enamel Ca/P ratio among treatments, regardless of evaluation times. Conclusions Violet LED alone produced the lowest bleaching effect, but enhanced HP bleaching results. Patients treated with LED/CP reached the same efficacy of HP, with reduced risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity and none of the bleaching protocols adversely affected enamel mineral content.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM During the selection of tooth color, subjective communication with the laboratory and an incorrect color registration technique can lead to a poor color match of a restoration to adjacent teeth and oral structures. PURPOSE The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare color registration and color matching in a young Chilean population with 3 different methods: visual with a shade guide, digital visual with a cross-polarized filter, and instrumental with a spectrophotometer. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 60 young volunteers were selected for tooth color registration of the maxillary right central incisor by using 3 different methods. Tooth color registration was performed using the CIELab and ΔE coordinate system. RESULTS Significant differences were detected between the coordinates recorded by the visual analog method in comparison with the other 2 methods. In contrast, no significant differences were found between the L∗ and b∗ coordinates of the spectrophotometer and the digital visual method with use of a cross-polarization filter. The ΔE obtained between the visual shade and spectrophotometer was 7.35, and the ΔE between the digital visual method with the use of a cross-polarization filter and the spectrophotometer was 6.12. CONCLUSIONS No statistically significant differences were observed in the digital image with the cross-polarization filter and the spectrophotometer in the L∗ and b∗ coordinate of the CIELab system. In contrast, the visual analog method led to large differences with the other methods under study. The ΔE of the digital visual method with the use of cross-polarization filters and the spectrophotometer was 6.2, considered as an acceptable color mismatch (<ΔE 6.8).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to assess if the use of intraoral positioning guides could increase the reproducibility of color measurements with a dental spectrophotometer. METHODS Twenty-three subjects were selected, and positioning guides for the maxillary arch of each participant were fabricated with clear 4 mm thermo-sheets. One orifice was made in the center of the clinical crown of the upper-right central incisor and another in the canine, with an external 6 mm diameter trephine. Color measurements were performed with a Vita EasyShade Compact IV dental spectrophotometer by the same operator in the same conditions. Forty measurements were taken per patient, 20 for each tooth, 10 with a positioning guide, and 10 without one. Before each measurement, the spectrophotometer was calibrated following the manufacturer's instructions. RESULTS Using the Wilcoxon test to evaluate nonparametric variables, there are statistically significant differences (P < .05) between the use or not of positioner for color recording with spectrophotometer. Greater repeatability of the measurements is obtained using repositioning split. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the use of positioning guides provides greater reproducibility in spectrophotometer measurements for all parameters of tooth 11 and for some parameters of tooth 13. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The use of a positioning guide for color measurement with a dental spectrophotometer allows a greater reproducibility of the measurements to be obtained. Achieving repeatable measurements is essential for studying the same area of the tooth, for example, in bleaching treatments and in color checks for prosthetic treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the tooth whiteness perceptibility thresholds of the average observer to changes in the CIELAB values and an optimised whiteness Index for dentistry (WIO) based on psychophysical studies. METHODS A psychophysical experiment based on visual assessments of digital images of teeth on a calibrated display with a group of observers (n=32) has been conducted to determine the perceptual thresholds in tooth whiteness. Digital simulations of a tooth that is identical in shape to the left incisor in the image of teeth were superimposed on to images. The colour of the simulated tooth was varied and observers were asked to respond whether there was a difference in whiteness between the left incisor and the simulated tooth. Thresholds for detection of differences in whiteness were independently determined in four conditions: ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* and a blue optical whitening direction. Raw data were fitted using a non-parametric approach and thresholds of CIELAB and WIO for each conditions were calculated. RESULTS Estimates of the threshold of the four conditions of ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* and a blue covarine optical tooth whitening direction were 1.14, 3.24, 1.11 and 1.51 respectively, with the corresponding WIO thresholds of 2.77, 6.52, 3.09 and 1.99 respectively. CONCLUSIONS The thresholds for tooth whiteness perception in CIELAB space and WIO space were determined. The findings demonstrate that for a whitening treatment with a blue covarine optical technology, a colour change of about 2 WIO units would be noticeable. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study gives a better understanding of the tooth whiteness perception threshold, and will help clinicians identify perceivable differences in tooth colour during matching and whitening procedures.

Abstract
Summary
Background/Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate compatibility between visual and digital color measurement methods.
Material and Methods: The color measurement components of intact natural maxillary right central incisor and left canine teeth of eighty patients were measured with visually shade guide and, digitally, with digital device. The color matchings were performed for each teeth on labial surfaces divided into three regions: cervical, middle and incisal. Ligthness, MLR (M: means middle hue, L designates greener, R designates redder) and chroma levels were assessed for each tooth on divided regions respectively. Measurements were performed by the same and experinced dentist with healthy eyes. The data were analyzed with Kappa and weighted Kappa coefficient (p< 0.05).
Results: The compatibility between visual and digital methods did not exist for MLR and chroma. The compatibility between both methods were determined only for ligthness of maxillary central and canine teeth at all regions of labial surfaces.
Conclusions: There was compatibility only for ligthness of intact natural teeth at all regions with both methods.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to compare the translucency parameter (TP) of ultratranslucent multilayered (UTML) zirconia according to thickness and layer level. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rectangles of UTML zirconia with four layers [dentin layer (DEL), first transitional layer (FTL), second transitional layer (STL), and enamel layer (ENL)] and four different thicknesses (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mm) were milled from blanks. Digital images were taken in a dark studio against white and black backgrounds under simulated daylight illumination and international commission on illumination (CIE) Lab* color values recorded using Photoshop Creative Cloud software. The TP was computed and compared according to thickness and layer level using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Bonferroni post hoc analysis for multiple comparisons. Significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS In each thickness, TP values were similar between any two layers. The significant effect of thickness on the TP was observed only in the first two layers. In the DEL, translucency was significantly greater at 0.4 mm than all other thicknesses. In the FTL, differences were significant between 0.4 and 0.8 mm and between 0.4 and 1 mm. CONCLUSION The investigated zirconia does not seem to show gradational changes in relative translucency from dentin to enamel levels regardless of the thickness used. Thickness affected the TP only in the first two layers with better translu-cency at 0.4 mm. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Since relative translucency does not seem to be significantly different between layers, clinicians can modify the apicocoronal positioning of the UTML layers within the restoration according to the desired Chroma without any implications on the clinically perceived translucency. While the thickness of 0.4 mm may be suggested for anterior esthetic veneers because of its higher translucency, the other thicknesses of 0.6 to 1 mm can be used to mask colored abutments in full contour restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To review current knowledge concerning the application of colour science on tooth colour and whiteness description, measurement, distribution and its psychological impact. DATA SOURCES "Scopus" databases were searched electronically with the principal keywords tooth, teeth, colour, white, whiteness. Language was restricted to English and original studies and reviews were included. Conference papers and abstracts were excluded. CONCLUSIONS The appearance and colour of teeth are a common concern for patients across many populations and are associated with an increased desire for treatments that improve dental aesthetics, including tooth whitening. The application of colour science in dentistry has allowed the precise description of tooth colour and whiteness. Coupled with the advances in instrumental tooth colour measurement, such as spectrophotometers, colorimeters, spectroradiometers and digital imaging systems, these parameters are quantifiable in a reproducible and robust manner. These principles have been applied to the tooth colour distribution in many study populations, indicating, in general, differences in tooth colour for subject age and gender, but not for ethnicity. Psychophysical studies on tooth colour and whiteness via third party assessment of images indicate that whitened teeth lead to judgements that are more positive on personality traits such as social competence and appeal, intellectual ability and relationship satisfaction.
