Association of prenatal multiple metal exposures with child neurodevelopment at 3 years of age: A prospective birth cohort study

Prenatal exposures to toxic metals and trace elements have been linked to childhood neurodevelopment. However, existing evidence remains inconclusive, and further research is needed to investigate the mixture effects of multiple metal exposures on childhood neurodevelopment. We aimed to examine the associations between prenatal exposure to specific metals and metal mixtures and neurodevelopment in children. In this prospective cohort study, we used the multivariable linear regressions and the robust modified Poisson regressions to explore the associations of prenatal exposure to 25 specific metals with neurodevelopment among children at 3 years of age in 854 mother-child pairs from the Jiangsu Birth Cohort (JBC) Study. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was employed to assess the joint effects of multiple metals on neurodevelopment. Prenatal manganese (Mn) exposure was negatively associated with the risk of non-optimal cognition development of children, while vanadium (V), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), antimony (Sb), cerium (Ce) and uranium (U) exposures were positively associated with the risk of non-optimal gross motor development. BKMR identified an interaction effect between Sb and Ce on non-optimal gross motor development. Additionally, an element risk score (ERS), representing the mixture effect of multiple metal exposures including V, Cu, Zn, Sb, Ce and U was constructed based on weights from a Poisson regression model. Children with ERS in the highest tertile had higher probability of non-optimal gross motor development (RR = 2.37, 95 % CI: 1.15, 4.86) versus those at the lowest tertile. Notably, Sb [conditional-posterior inclusion probabilities (cPIP) = 0.511] and U (cPIP = 0.386) mainly contributed to the increased risk of non-optimal gross motor development. The findings highlight the importance of paying attention to the joint effects of multiple metals on children's neurodevelopment. The ERS score may serve as an indicator of comprehensive metal exposure risk for children's neurodevelopment.

Investigation of use of hydrophilic/hydrophobic NADESs for selective extraction of As(III) and Sb(III) ions in vegetable samples: Air assisted liquid phase microextraction and chemometric optimization

In this paper, a green, cost-effective sample preparation method based on air assisted liquid phase microextraction (AA-LPME) was developed for the simultaneous extraction of As(III) and Sb(III) ions from vegetable samples using hydrophilic/hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs). Central composite design was used for the optimization of extraction factors including NADES volume, extraction cycle, pH, and curcumin concentration. Limits of detection for As(III) and Sb(III) were 1.5 ng L-1 and 0.06 ng L-1, respectively. Working ranges for As(III) and Sb(III) were 0.2-300 ng L-1 (coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9978) and 5-400 ng L-1 (R2 = 0.9996), respectively. Relative standard deviations for As(III) and Sb(III) were 2.2-2.8% and 2.9-3.2%, respectively. Enrichment factor of the method was 184 for As(III) and 172 for Sb(III). The accuracy and precision of the AA-NADES-LPME method were investigated by intraday/interday studies and standard reference material analysis, respectively. Finally, the AA-NADES-LPME method was successfully applied to microwave digested vegetable samples using the standard addition approach and acceptable recoveries were achieved.

Concentrations and influencing factors of 17 elements in placenta, cord blood, and maternal blood of women from an e-waste recycling area

BACKGROUND

The effects of prenatal element exposure on mothers and fetuses have generated concern. Profiles of trace and toxic elements in biological material are urgently desired, especially for women who reside near e-waste recycling facilities. The aim of this study was to investigate elements concentrations in placenta, cord blood, and maternal blood of women and to evaluate the influencing factors.

METHODS

A group of 48 women from an e-waste recycling site and a group of 31 women from a non-e-waste recycling site were recruited. Basic characteristics were collected by questionnaire and the concentrations of 17 elements in placenta, cord blood, and maternal blood samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Finally, the generalized linear model regression analysis (GLM) was used to test the association between element concentrations and possible factors.

RESULTS

Compared to the control group, the exposed group had significantly elevated cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and antimony (Sb) in placenta, and higher lead (Pb) in maternal blood and cord blood (P<0.05). Sb concentration in maternal blood was significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). GLM analysis showed that element concentrations were mainly associated with maternal age [chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), mercury (Hg) in placenta, copper (Cu) in maternal blood], education (Se, Sb in placenta), family income (Cu in maternal blood and Ni in placenta), passive smoking [Cu and Zn in placenta, Pb in maternal blood], and e-waste contact history (Hg in cord blood, Cu, Zn, and Cd in maternal blood).

CONCLUSIONS

Women in the e-waste recycling area had higher toxic element levels in the placenta and blood samples. More preventive measures were needed to reduce the risk of element exposure for mothers and fetuses in these areas.

Insights into the biogeochemical transformation, environmental impacts and biochar-based soil decontamination of antimony

Every year, a significant amount of antimony (Sb) enters the environment from natural and anthropogenic sources like mining, smelting, industrial operations, ore processing, vehicle emissions, shooting activities, and coal power plants. Humans, plants, animals, and aquatic life are heavily exposed to hazardous Sb or antimonide by either direct consumption or indirect exposure to Sb in the environment. This review summarizes the current knowledge about Sb global occurrence, its fate, distribution, speciation, associated health hazards, and advanced biochar composites studies used for the remediation of soil contaminated with Sb to lessen Sb bioavailability and toxicity in soil. Anionic metal(loid) like Sb in the soil is significantly immobilized by pristine biochar and its composites, reducing their bioavailability. However, a comprehensive review of the impacts of biochar-based composites on soil Sb remediation is needed. Therefore, the current review focuses on (1) the fundamental aspects of Sb global occurrence, global soil Sb contamination, its transformation in soil, and associated health hazards, (2) the role of different biochar-based composites in the immobilization of Sb from soil to increase biochar applicability toward Sb decontamination. The review aids in developing advanced, efficient, and effective engineered biochar composites for Sb remediation by evaluating novel materials and techniques and through sustainable management of Sb-contaminated soil, ultimately reducing its environmental and health risks.

Functional features of a novel Sb(III)- and As(III)-oxidizing bacterium: Implications for the interactions between bacterial Sb(III) and As(III) oxidation pathways

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) share similar chemical characteristics and commonly coexist in contaminated environments. It has been reported that the biogeochemical cycles of antimony and arsenic affect each other. However, there is limited understanding regarding microbial coupling between the biogeochemical processes of antimony and arsenic. Here, we aimed to solve this issue. We successfully isolated a novel bacterium, Shinella sp. SbAsOP1, which possesses both Sb(III) and As(III) oxidase, and can effectively oxidize both Sb(III) and As(III) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. SbAsOP1 exhibits greater aerobic oxidation activity for the oxidation of As(III) or Sb(III) compared to its anaerobic activity. SbAsOP1 also significantly catalyzes the oxidative mobilization of solid-phase Sb(III) under aerobic conditions. The activity of SbAsOP1 in oxidizing solid Sb(III) is 3 times lower than its activity in oxidizing soluble form. It is noteworthy that, in the presence of both Sb(III) and As(III) under aerobic conditions, either As(III) or Sb(III) significantly inhibits the oxidation of Sb(III) or As(III), respectively. In comparison, under anaerobic conditions and in the coexistence of Sb(III) and As(III), As(III) significantly inhibits Sb(III) oxidation, whereas Sb(III) almost completely inhibits As(III) oxidation. These findings suggest that under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, SbAsOP1 demonstrates a partial preference for Sb(III) oxidation. Additionally, bacterial oxidations of Sb(III) and As(III) mutually inhibit each other to varying degrees. These observations gain a novel understanding of the interplay between the biogeochemical processes of antimony and arsenic.

Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis to evaluate antimony exposure effects on cell-lineage communications within the Drosophila testicular niche

The increasing production and prevalence of antimony (Sb)-related products raise concerns regarding its potential hazards to reproductive health. Upon environmental exposure, Sb reportedly induces testicular toxicity during spermatogenesis; moreover, it is known to affect various testicular cell populations, particularly germline stem cell populations. However, the cell-cell communication resulting from Sb exposure within the testicular niche remains poorly understood. To address this gap, herein we analyzed testicular single-cell RNA sequencing data from Sb-exposed Drosophila. Our findings revealed that the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and WNT signaling pathways were associated with the stem cell niche in Drosophila testes, which may disrupt the homeostasis of the testicular niche in Drosophila. Furthermore, we identified several ligand-receptor pairs, facilitating the elucidation of intercellular crosstalk involved in Sb-mediated reproductive toxicology. We employed scRNA-seq analysis and conducted functional verification to investigate the expression patterns of core downstream factors associated with EGFR and WNT signatures in the testes under the influence of Sb exposure. Altogether, our results shed light on the potential mechanisms of Sb exposure-mediated testicular cell-lineage communications.

Toward an interdisciplinary approach to assess the adverse health effects of dust-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s on preschool children

Settled dust can function as a pollutant sink for compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s (MMs), which may lead to health issues. Thus, dust represents a hazard specifically for young children, because of their vulnerability and hand-to-mouth behavior favoring dust ingestion. The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of the season and the microenvironment on the concentrations of 15 PAHs and 17 MMs in indoor and outdoor settled dust in three preschools (suburban, urban, and industrial). Second, the potential sources and health risks among children associated with dust PAHs and MMs were assessed. Third, domestic factors (risk perception, knowledge and parental style) were described to explore protective parental behaviors toward dust hazards. The suburban preschool had the lowest concentrations of dust PAHs and MMs, while the industrial and urban preschools had higher but similar concentrations. Seasonal tendencies were not clearly observed. Indoor dusts reflected the outdoor environment, even if specific indoor sources were noted. Source analysis indicated mainly vehicular emissions, material release, and pyrogenic or industrial sources. The non-cancer health risks were non-existent, but potential cancer health risks (between 1.10-6 and 1.10-4) occurred at all sampling locations. Notably, the highest cancer risk was observed in a playground area (>1.10-4) and material release should be further addressed. Whereas we assessed higher risk indoors, parents perceived a higher risk in the open-air environment and at the preschool than at home. They also perceived a lower risk for their own children, revealing an optimism bias, which reduces parental anxiety.

Trace Elements Levels in Major Depressive Disorder-Evaluation of Potential Threats and Possible Therapeutic Approaches

The multifactorial etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) includes biological, environmental, genetic, and psychological aspects. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in metallomic studies in psychiatry, aiming to evaluate the role of chosen trace elements in the MDD etiology as well as the progression of symptoms. This narrative review aims to summarize the available literature on the relationship between the concentration of chosen elements in the serum of patients with MDD and the onset and progression of this psychiatric condition. The authors reviewed PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases searching for elements that had been investigated so far and further evaluated them in this paper. Ultimately, 15 elements were evaluated, namely, zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron, copper, aluminium, cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, calcium, manganese, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. The association between metallomic studies and psychiatry has been developing dynamically recently. According to the results of current research, metallomics might act as a potential screening tool for patients with MDD while at the same time providing an assessment of the severity of symptoms. Either deficiencies or excessive amounts of chosen elements might be associated with the progression of depressive symptoms or even the onset of the disease among people predisposed to MDD.

Accumulation degree and risk assessment of metals in street dust from a developing city in Central Taiwan

Due to the numerous industrial parks and high traffic density in Miaoli, Taiwan, large amounts of metals may be released into the atmosphere, accumulating in street dust. Therefore, this study aimed to collect street dust in Miaoli to quantify the metals and assess the accumulation degree, sources, and potential risks. The enrichment factor (EF), geological accumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk, and non-carcinogenic and lifetime carcinogenic risk were estimated to assess the accumulation degree and the potential environmental and health risks. Pearson correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and positive matrix factor model were used to clarify the relationship between levels of metals and identify possible sources. The levels of metals in street dust in order were Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Sr > Co > Sb. According to Igeo, the level of Ni indicated moderately polluted. The levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb showed moderate to strong pollution, strong pollution, and very strong pollution, respectively. Results of average ecological risk analysis pointed out that Pb and Cu represent a very high risk, while other metals posed low-to moderate-level ecological risks. Excluding the Steel Enterprise area, based on the EF value and source identification, it might be concluded that Co, Sr, Fe, Mn, and Sb were mainly from natural sources, while Cu, Pb, and Zn come from anthropogenic pollution sources. Based on the results of the risk assessments, most metals pose no serious adverse health risk to humans. But, in comparison to Miaoli townships, the health risks of residents living in the Steel Enterprise area were higher. However, given that children and adolescents exposure to Co, Cr, Pb, and Ni together constitute a relatively higher carcinogenic risk (CR > 10-6), more attention needs to be paid to the populations most susceptible.

Recent advancements in antimony (Sb) removal from water and wastewater by carbon-based materials: a systematic review

Antimony (Sb) has been classified as a high-priority contaminant in the environment. Sb contamination resulting from the use of antimony-containing compounds in industry necessitates the development of efficient methods to remove it from water and wastewater. Adsorption is a highly efficient and reliable method for pollutants removal owing to its availability, recyclability, and low cost. Recently, carbonaceous materials and their applications for the removal of Sb from the aqueous matrices have received special attention worldwide. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the occurrence and exposure of Sb in the environment and on human health, respectively. Different carbon-based adsorbents have been classified for the adsorptive removal of Sb and their adsorption characteristics have been delineated. Recent development in the adsorption performance of the adsorbent materials for improving the Sb removal from the aqueous medium has been outlined. Further, to develop an understanding of the effect of different parameters like pH, competitive ions, and dissolved ions for Sb adsorption and subsequent removal have been discussed. A retrospective analysis of literature was conducted to present the adsorption behavior and underlying mechanisms involved in the removal of Sb using various adsorbents. Moreover, this study has identified emerging research gaps and emphasized the need for developing modified/engineered carbonaceous adsorbents to enhance Sb adsorption from various aqueous matrices.

Distribution, Metabolism, and Toxicity of Antimony Species in Wistar Rats. A Bio-Analytical Approach

This work studied the distribution, reactivity, and biological effects of pentavalent or trivalent antimony (Sb(V), Sb(III)) and N-methylglucamine antimonate (NMG-Sb(V)) in Wistar Rats. The expression of fibrosis genes such as α-SMA, PAI-1, and CTGF were determined in Liver, and Kidney tissues. Wistar rats were treated with different concentrations of Sb(V), Sb(III), As(V) and As(III), and MA via intra-peritoneal injections. The results indicated a noteworthy elevation in mRNA levels of plasminogen activator 1 (PAI-1) in the kidneys of rats that were injected. The main accumulation site for Sb(V) was observed to be the liver, from which it is primarily excreted in its reduced form (Sb(III)) through the urine. The generation of Sb(III) in the kidneys has been found to induce damage through the expression of α-SMA and CTGF, and also lead to a higher creatinine clearance compared to As(III).

Antimony Compounds Associate with Atopic Dermatitis and Influence Models of Itch and Dysbiosis

Compared to the myriad of known triggers for rhinitis and asthma, environmental exposure research for atopic dermatitis (AD) is not well established. We recently reported that an untargeted search of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) databases versus AD rates by United States (U.S.) postal codes revealed that isocyanates, such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI), are the pollutant class with the strongest spatiotemporal and epidemiologic association with AD. We further demonstrated that (di)isocyanates disrupt ceramide-family lipid production in commensal bacteria and activate the thermo-itch host receptor TRPA1. In this report, we reanalyzed regions of the U.S. with low levels of diisocyanate pollution to assess if a different chemical class may contribute. We identified antimony compounds as the top associated pollutant in such regions. Exposure to antimony compounds would be expected from brake dust in high-traffic areas, smelting plants, bottled water, and dust from aerosolized soil. Like TDI, antimony inhibited ceramide-family lipid production in Roseomonas mucosa and activated TRPA1 in human neurons. While further epidemiologic research will be needed to directly evaluate antimony exposure with surrounding AD prevalence and severity, these data suggest that compounds which are epidemiologically associated with AD, inhibit commensal lipid production, and activate TRPA1 may be causally related to AD pathogenesis.

Health risk assessment of some selected heavy metals in infant food sold in Wa, Ghana

Infants remain a high-risk group as far as exposure to toxic metals is concerned. The levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), antimony (Sb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) in twenty-two (22) samples of baby foods and formulas were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The concentrations in (mg/kg) of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Sb were in the ranges 0.006-0.057, 0.043-0.064, 0.113-0.33, 0.000-0.002, 1.720-3.568, 0.065-0.183, 0.061-0.368 and 0.017-0.1 respectively. Health risk assessment indices like the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ), Cancer Risk (CR) and Hazard Index (HI) were calculated. EDI values of Hg, Cr, and As were below their recommended tolerable daily intake, that of Ni and Mn were lower in 95% of samples, and Cd was also lower in 50% of the samples. THQ values for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, and Pb were 0.32-3.21, 0.75-1.10, 0.65-1.94, 0.00-0.37, 0.21-0.44, 0.08-0.12 and 0.26-1.13 respectively. The CR values were greater than 10^-6, making them unacceptable for human consumption. HI values were between 2.68 and 6.83 (greater than 1), which implied that these metals are likely to pose non-carcinogenic health risks to infants.

Concentrations and predictors of aluminum, antimony, and lithium in breast milk: A repeated-measures study of donors

Aluminum (Al), antimony (Sb), and lithium (Li) are relatively common toxic metal(oid)s that can be transferred into breast milk and potentially to the nursing infant. This study assessed concentrations of Al, Sb, and Li in breast milk samples collected from donor mothers and explored the predictors of these concentrations. Two hundred forty-two pooled breast milk samples were collected at different times post-partum from 83 donors in Spain (2015-2018) and analyzed for Al, Sb, and Li concentrations. Mixed-effect linear regression was used to investigate the association of breast milk concentrations of these elements with the sociodemographic profile of the women, their dietary habits and utilization of personal care products (PCPs), the post-partum interval, and the nutritional characteristics of milk samples, among other factors. Al was detected in 94% of samples, with a median concentration of 57.63 μg/L. Sb and Li were detected in 72% and 79% of samples at median concentrations of 0.08 μg/L and 0.58 μg/L, respectively. Concentrations of Al, Sb, and Li were not associated with post-partum time. Al was positively associated with total lipid content of samples, weight change since before pregnancy, and coffee and butter intakes and inversely with meat intake. Li was positively associated with intake of chocolate and use of face cream and eyeliner and inversely with year of sample collection, egg, bread, and pasta intakes, and use of hand cream. Sb was positively associated with fatty fish, yoghurt, rice, and deep-fried food intakes and use of eyeliner and inversely with egg and cereal intakes and use of eyeshadow. This study shows that Al, Sb, and Li, especially Al, are widely present in donor breast milk samples. Their concentrations in the milk samples were most frequently associated with dietary habits but also with the lipid content of samples and the use of certain PCPs.

Toxic effects of antimony in plants: Reasons and remediation possibilities-A review and future prospects

Antimony (Sb) is a dangerous heavy metal (HM) that poses a serious threat to the health of plants, animals, and humans. Leaching from mining wastes and weathering of sulfide ores are the major ways of introducing Sb into our soils and aquatic environments. Crops grown on Sb-contaminated soils are a major reason of Sb entry into humans by eating Sb-contaminated foods. Sb toxicity in plants reduces seed germination and root and shoot growth, and causes substantial reduction in plant growth and final productions. Moreover, Sb also induces chlorosis, causes damage to the photosynthetic apparatus, reduces membrane stability and nutrient uptake, and increases oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing plant growth and development. The threats induced by Sb toxicity and Sb concentration in soils are increasing day by day, which would be a major risk to crop production and human health. Additionally, the lack of appropriate measures regarding the remediation of Sb-contaminated soils will further intensify the current situation. Therefore, future research must be aimed at devising appropriate measures to mitigate the hazardous impacts of Sb toxicity on plants, humans, and the environment and to prevent the entry of Sb into our ecosystem. We have also described the various strategies to remediate Sb-contaminated soils to prevent its entry into the human food chain. Additionally, we also identified the various research gaps that must be addressed in future research programs. We believe that this review will help readers to develop the appropriate measures to minimize the toxic effects of Sb and its entry into our ecosystem. This will ensure the proper food production on Sb-contaminated soils.

Investigation of Combustion of KMnO4/Zn Pyrotechnic Delay Composition

This article reports an investigation of the combustion of a binary pyrotechnic delay composition (PDC), consisting of zinc powder as fuel and KMnO₄ as an oxidising agent, with zinc content ranging from 35 to 70 wt. %. The linear burning rate for delay compositions in the form of pyrotechnic fuses was investigated. Compositions with zinc content between 50 and 70 wt. % yielded burn rates in the range of 13.30-28.05 mm/s. The delay compositions were also tested for their sensitivity to friction and impact, where the compositions showed impact sensitivity in the range from 7.5 to 50 J and were insensitive to friction. Tests in a pressure bomb were carried out to determine the maximum overpressure and pressurisation rate. The thermal properties of the composition were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TG). The morphology of the combustion products was studied by SEM technique, EDS analyses were used to investigate the element distribution of the post-combustion residues, providing an insight into the phenomena taking place during the combustion of the delay compositions.

Advances in Polyethylene Terephthalate Beverage Bottle Optimization: A Mini Review

Compared with other materials, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has high transparency, excellent physical and mechanical properties in a wide temperature range and good hygiene and safety, so it is widely used in the packaging industry, especially in the packaging of beverages and foods. The optimization of PET bottles is mainly reflected in three aspects: material optimization, structure optimization and process optimization, among which there is much research on material optimization and process optimization, but there is no complete overview on structure optimization. A summary of structural optimization is necessary. Aiming at structural optimization, the finite element method is a useful supplement to the beverage packaging industry. By combining the computer-aided design technology and using finite element software for finite element simulation, researchers can replace the experimental test in the pre-research design stage, predict the effect and save cost. This review summarizes the development of PET bottles for beverage packaging, summarizes various optimization methods for preventing stress cracking in beverage packaging, and especially focuses on comparing and evaluating the effects of several optimization methods for packaging structure. Finally, the future development of all kinds of optimization based on structural optimization in the field of beverage packaging is comprehensively discussed, including personalized design, the combination of various methods and the introduction of actual impact factor calculation.

Rhizosphere Microbial Communities and Geochemical Constraining Mechanism of Antimony Mine Waste-Adapted Plants in Southwestern China

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are two hazardous metalloid elements, and the biogeochemical cycle of Sb and As can be better understood by studying plant rhizosphere microorganisms associated with Sb mine waste. In the current study, samples of three types of mine waste—Sb mine tailing, waste rocks, and smelting slag—and associated rhizosphere microorganisms of adapted plants were collected from Qinglong Sb mine, southwest China. 16S rRNA was sequenced and used to study the composition of the mine waste microbial community. The most abundant phylum in all samples was Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. The community composition varied among different mine waste types. Gammaproteobacteria was the most abundant microorganism in tailings, Actinobacteria was mainly distributed in waste rock, and Saccharimonadia, Acidobacteriae, and Ktedonobacteria were mainly present in slag. At the family level, the vast majority of Hydrogenophilaceae were found in tailings, Ktedonobacteraceae, Chthoniobacteraceae, and Acidobacteriaceae (Subgroup 1) were mostly found in slag, and Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcaceae were mainly found in waste rock. Actinobacteriota and Arthrobacter are important taxa for reducing heavy metal(loid) mobility, vegetation restoration, and self-sustaining ecosystem construction on antimony mine waste. The high concentrations of Sb and As reduce microbial diversity.

Antimony and sleep health outcomes: NHANES 2009-2016

OBJECTIVES

Following an earlier National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008 analysis, we investigated the association between urine antimony and sleep health using more recent data, new measures of sleep health, and multiple measures of urine density adjustment in NHANES 2009-2016.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

United States, national population-based survey.

MEASUREMENTS

Multinomial logistic regression (sleep duration) and a generalized linear model with log-binomial regression (OSA, daytime sleepiness, sleep problems) were used to analyze the association of urinary antimony with sleep health outcomes. Urine creatinine and osmolality were considered, combined with statistical adjustment and standardization to account for urine density.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 8133 adult participants over 20 years of age were used using NHANES 2009-2016.

RESULTS

We did not observe associations between urine antimony and short sleep duration or sleep problems. We observed mixed results for long sleep duration; there was a negative association in NHANES 2015-2016 and no association in NHANES 2009-2014. For self-reported symptoms of OSA, which were only available in 2015-2016, we observed a positive association for upper quartile urine antimony compared with the first quartile (RR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.50) and a test for trend, P= .02.

CONCLUSION

Urinary antimony was not consistently associated with short sleep duration, long sleep duration, or sleep problems, despite the findings from a relatively recent scientific article using earlier waves of NHANES. We observed a positive association between antimony and symptoms of OSA; this cross-sectional analysis requires confirmation.

Characterizing spatiotemporal variability in airborne heavy metal concentration: Changes after 18 Years in Baltimore, MD

INTRODUCTION

This study investigates the impact of changes in local industry, urban development, and proximity to suspected emission sources on airborne metal concentration in Baltimore, Maryland between 2001 and 2019 with particular focus on the urban industrial community of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore.

METHODS

Integrated PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ Harvard Impactors were set up at six locations in the Baltimore City metropolitan area in weeklong sampling sessions from January-July 2019 to assess variation in airborne metal concentration by proximity to suspected metal emission sources. PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were collected on Teflo filters and analyzed for a panel of 12 metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The findings were compared against airborne metal concentrations reported by the Baltimore Supersite in 2001 and 2003 to assess changes over the 18-year period.

RESULTS

PM_2.5 concentrations reported from this study ranged from 3.27 μg/m³ to 36.0 μg/m³ and PM₁₀ concentrations ranged from 9.00 μg/m³ to 30.1 μg/m³ across all sampling sites. Metal concentrations ranged from 1.4 times (Cd) to 4.8 times (Cr) higher in PM₁₀ compared to PM_2.5. Compared to the study reference site, median PM_2.5 concentrations of Co and Fe were roughly 1.8 times and 2.1 times higher, respectively, at near-road sampling sites indicating significant variability in airborne metal concentration by proximity to local traffic emissions. PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ Sb concentrations were 3.4 times and 6.7 times higher at a near incinerator site compared to the reference, consistent with existing evidence of Sb sourcing from municipal incinerators in Baltimore City. Decreases in Cr (-40%), Ni (-73%), Pb (-55%), and Zn (-36%) concentrations were observed over the 18-year period while concentrations of Cu, Fe, and Mn were not statistically significantly different.

CONCLUSION

Declines in airborne Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentration since 2001 appear to coincide with industrial decline highlighting the success of remediation and redevelopment efforts. Remaining spatial variability is related to vehicular traffic and proximity to a municipal incinerator which should be focal areas for future intervention to reduce metal exposure disparities in Baltimore City.

Disruption of mitochondrial redox homeostasis as a mechanism of antimony-induced reactive oxygen species and cytotoxicity

Occupational and environmental Sb exposure has been associated with increased risk of respiratory diseases and lung cancer, but the toxicities and molecular mechanisms of Sb have been less investigated. In the present study, we first analyzed the Sb toxicity profile of lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells, and found that Sb dose-dependently decreased the cell viability and arrested cell cycle at G2/M but did not induce apoptosis. We next investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in Sb-induced cytotoxicity. The results showed that Sb did not significantly induce cytosolic ROS production by NADPH oxidase (NOX) and the NOX inhibitors did not ameliorate the Sb-induced cell viability loss in A549 cells. However, the level of mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) was significantly increased in Sb-exposed cells and the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant significantly improved cell viability. These results suggested that mitochondria but not NOX is the major source of ROS production and mtROS plays a critical role in Sb-induced cytotoxicity. Furthermore, we found that Sb induced mitochondria dysfunction including the significant decrease of ATP level and mitochondrial membrane potential. Finally, Sb exposure decreased the activity of complex I and complex III, the level of -SH and GSH in mitochondria, and the activity of mitochondrial GR, GPx and TrxR, but increased the mitochondrial SOD activity, suggesting the disruption of mitochondrial redox homeostasis. Taken together, these findings suggested that Sb impaired mitochondrial redox homeostasis, resulting in formation of mtROS, thereby inhibited mitochondrial function and led to cytotoxicity.

Racial/ethnic and neighborhood disparities in metals exposure during pregnancy in the Northeastern United States

Despite the unequal burden of environmental exposures borne by racially minoritized communities, these groups are often underrepresented in public health research. Here, we examined racial/ethnic disparities in exposure to metals among a multi-ethnic sample of pregnant women. The sample included women enrolled in the PRogramming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) pregnancy cohort (N = 382). Urinary metal concentrations (arsenic [As], barium [Ba], cadmium [Cd], cesium [Cs], chromium [Cr], lead [Pb], antimony [Sb]) were measured during mid-pregnancy and information on individual- and neighborhood-level characteristics was ascertained during an in-person interview and from publicly available databases, respectively. Linear regression was used to examine individual and neighborhood characteristics in relation to metal concentrations. Black/Black-Hispanic women had Cd, Cr, Pb, and Sb levels that were 142.0%, 10.9%, 35.0%, and 32.1% higher than White, non-Hispanic women, respectively. Likewise, White-Hispanic women had corresponding levels that were 141.5%, 108.2%, 59.9%, and 38.3% higher. These same metals were also higher among women residing in areas with higher crime, higher diversity, lower educational attainment, lower household income, and higher poverty. Significant disparities in exposure to metals exist and may be driven by neighborhood-level factors. Exposure to metals for pregnant women can be especially harmful. Understanding exposure inequalities and identifying factors that increase risk can help inform targeted public health interventions.

Antimony distribution and mobility in different types of waste derived from the exploitation of stibnite ore deposits

Wastes derived from the exploitation of stibnite ore deposits were studied to determine their mineralogical, chemical, and environmental characteristics and establish the Sb distribution and the current and long-term risks of Sb mobilization. Representative samples of mine waste rocks, mine tailings, and smelting waste were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, polarized light microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and digestion, leaching, and extraction procedures. The main Sb-bearing minerals and phases identified in the smelting waste were natrojarosite, iron (oxyhydr)oxides, mixtures of iron and antimony (oxyhydr)oxides, and tripuhyite; those in the mine tailings and mine waste rocks were iron (oxyhydr)oxides and/or mixtures of iron and antimony (oxyhydr)oxides. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides and natrojarosite had high Sb contents, with maximum values of 16.51 and 9.63 wt% Sb₂O₅, respectively. All three types of waste were characterized as toxic; the mine waste rocks and mine tailings would require pretreatment to decrease their leachable Sb content before they would be acceptable at hazardous waste landfills. Relatively little of the Sb was in desorbable forms, which accounted for <0.01 and <0.8% of the total Sb content in the smelting waste and mine waste rocks/mine tailings, respectively. Under reducing conditions, further Sb mobilization from mine waste rocks and mine tailings could occur (up to 4.6 and 3.3% of the total content, respectively), considerably increasing the risk that Sb will be introduced into the surroundings. Although the smelting waste had the highest total Sb content, it showed the lowest risk of Sb release under different environmental conditions. The significant Fe levels in the smelting waste facilitated the formation of various Fe compounds that greatly decreased the Sb mobilization from these wastes.

Source identification of pollution and health risks to metals in household indoor and outdoor dust: A cross-sectional study in a typical mining town, China

Dust is regarded as an important pathway of heavy metal(loid)s to the human body. Health risks posed by metal(loid)s from household dust are of particular concern. However, the contamination and sources of heavy metal(loid)s in household dust environments, as well as source identification of health risks related to heavy metal(loid)s from household dust for vulnerable populations such as children, have not been thoroughly studied in China, particularly for the areas involved with industrial activities such as ore mining. Thus, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area famous for Pb/Zn ore mining, to assess the pollution sources and health risks of heavy metal(loid)s from household indoor and outdoor dust and to identify the contribution of household dust to the health risks for children. The results indicated that household environment was heavily contaminated by metal(loid)s, which were mainly attributed to mining activity. Meanwhile, the indoor/outdoor ratio and the redundancy analysis indicated that there were other pollution sources in indoor environments such as coal combustion, materials for interior building and decoration. Vapor inhalation was the main exposure pathway for Hg, while ingestion was the predominant pathway for other metal(loid)s. Although the cancer risks were relatively low, the HIt from household indoor and outdoor dust (2.19) was about twice the acceptable limit (1) and was primarily from Pb (64.52%) and As (23.42%). Outdoor dust was a larger contributor to the HI of Sb, As, Cr, Cd, Zn and Pb, which accounted for 51.37%, 58.63%, 52.14%, 59.66%, 52.87% and 64.47%, respectively, and the HIt was mainly from outdoor dust (60.76%). These results indicated that non-cancer health risks were largely from outdoor dust exposure, and strengthened the notion that concern should be given to the potential health risks from metal(loid)s in household dust both originating from mining activity and indoor environmental sources.

Tin and Antimony as Soil Pollutants along Railway Lines—A Case Study from North-Western Croatia

The aim of this study was to determine the extent and patterns of antimony and tin contamination in soils along railway lines, as there are very few data in the literature on this subject. The study was conducted in north-western Croatia. Total and bioavailable concentrations of Sn and Sb were detected using high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). The following results were obtained: total concentrations of Sb ranged from 0.98 to 52.0 mg/kg and of Sn from 3.04 mg/kg to 97.6 mg/kg. The soil samples showed pronounced Sb and Sn enrichment, up to 87 and 33 times the median value for European soils, respectively. In contrast to the total concentrations, the bioavailable concentrations showed relatively low values. For Sn, the percentage of total content ranged from 0.001 to 0.021%, while for Sb it ranged from 0.001 to 0.136%. Statistical data analysis suggests that the distribution of Sb and Sn in soils near railway lines is influenced by the functional use of the site, distance from the tracks, topography, age of the railway line, and also by soil properties such as soil texture, humus content, and soil pH. This study demonstrates that rail transport is a source of soil pollution with Sn and Sb. The origin of Sb and Sn enrichment is abrasion by brakes, rails, wheels, freight losses, exhaust gasses, etc. Both elements in soils along railway lines pose an environmental risk to humans, agricultural production, and wildlife, and therefore further detailed studies are required.

Removal of antimonate (Sb(V)) from aqueous solutions and its immobilization in soils with a novel Fe(III)-modified montmorillonite sorbent

Over the past decades, contamination of terrestrial environments with antimony (Sb) has aroused a great deal of public concern. In this research, the efficacy of Fe(III)-modified montmorillonite (Mt) (Fe-Mt) for the removal of Sb(V) from aqueous solutions with Sb(V) concentration in the range of 0.2-1 mmol L^-1 and immobilization of Sb(V) in soils spiked with 250 mg Sb(V) kg^-1 was investigated. The immobilizing mechanisms of the modified clay were assessed by fitting the experimental sorption data with the Langmuir and Freundlich sorption models and a series of single and sequential extraction studies. The results showed that the adsorption data had a better fit with the Langmuir equation (R²: 0.99) and Fe-Mt could efficiently remove up to 95% of Sb(V) at lower concentration ranges. The concentrations of Sb(V) in exchangeable fraction of modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction and distilled water extracts of the amended soils decreased dramatically by up to 60% and 92%, respectively. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of Sb(V) in simulated human gastric juice reduced remarkably by 52% to 60%, depending upon the soil fraction sizes. The results confirmed that Fe-Mt could be a promising candidate for the removal of Sb(V) from aqueous solutions and immobilization of Sb(V) in terrestrial environments.

Sensitivity of Freshwater Australian Bass (Macquaria novemaculeata) and Silver Perch (Bidyanus bidyanus) to Waterborne Antimony: Exposure-Dose-Response Characteristics and Ion Homeostasis

We conducted acute toxicity studies using semi-static protocols to examine the lethal responses of Australian bass and silver perch exposed to antimony (Sb) oxidation states in Sb(III) (10.5-30.5 mg L^-1) and Sb(V) (95.9-258.7 mg L^-1). Bioavailability and the effects of Sb on body ion regulation (Na, Ca, Mg, and K) were also investigated. Antimony species-specific effects were observed with exposure to both Sb oxidation states. Median lethal concentrations (LC50s) for Sb(III) were 13.6 and 18 mg L^-1 for Australian bass and silver perch, respectively, and the LC50 for Sb(V) in Australian bass was 165.3 mg L^-1. The LC50 could not be calculated for silver perch exposed to Sb(V) as the maximum exposure concentrations produced 40% mortality but a larger-than value of > 258.7 mg L^-1 was estimated. Relative median potency values derived from the LC50s were 0.1 Sb(III) and 12.2 and 16.6 Sb(V) for Australian bass and silver perch, respectively, demonstrating greater toxicity of Sb(III) to both fish species. Antimony uptake in fish was observed. Median critical body residue (CBR50) values of 77.7 and 26.6 mg kg^-1 for Sb(III) were estimated for Australian bass and silver perch, respectively, and 628.1 mg kg^-1 for Sb(V) in Australian bass. Bioconcentration factors (BCFs) for both Sb(III) and Sb(V) did not change with exposure but the greater BCFs for fish exposed to Sb(III) indicate that it is more bioavailable than Sb(V) in acute exposure. No effects on whole-body Na, Ca, Mg, or K ions were observed with fish exposure to either Sb species.

Assessment of DNA damage in relation to heavy metal induced oxidative stress in females with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)

Pregnancy termination consecutively for three or more times during the first trimester is termed as Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). In addition to the abnormal karyotype, heavy metal induced oxidative damage may contribute as prominent etiological factor in pregnancy termination. Oxidative stress is considered crucial in etiology underlying RPL with altered antioxidant status and subsequent DNA damage. The current case controlled study investigated Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), DNA damage (8OHdG) and heavy metals in RPL group (n = 30) and the women with successful pregnancies and no cases of miscarriage as control group (30 women). Heavy metals -Antimony (Sb) and Arsenic (As) were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass spectrophotometry (ICP-MS). There was significant decrease in levels of TAC in RPL group compared to healthy pregnant women (P < 0.05). On contrary, elevated levels of As and Sb were observed in RPL group with subsequent increase in the levels of 8OHdG (P < 0.001); indicating extensive DNA damage in these patients. Furthermore, increased levels of As and Sb in RPL group were positively correlated with 8OHdG and negatively with total antioxidant capacity. The outcome of the study provides clear insight of the role of metal induced oxidative stress that plays a vital role in the pathophysiology underlying RPL.

Welding Fume Exposure and Health Risk Assessment in a Cohort of Apprentice Welders

Welding fumes vary in composition depending on the materials and processes used, and while health outcomes in full-time welders have been widely studied, limited research on apprentices exists. Besides, few data are available for metals such as vanadium and antimony. This study aimed to look at individual metals present in welding fumes in the learning environment of apprentice welders. Forty-three welders and 41 controls were chosen from trade programmes at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Ambient and personal air samples were collected at days 0, 1, 7, and 50 of their training and analysed for mass and metal concentrations using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Results showed increases in particle and metal concentrations as apprentices progressed throughout their education and that concentrations at day 50 were similar to levels found in the literature for professional welders. Variable concentrations indicate that some individuals may not properly use the local exhaust ventilation system. Other possible explanation for variations are the position of the sampler on the shoulder, the time spent welding and in each welding position, and the skills of the welders. Strong relationships were observed between particle and metal concentrations, suggesting that these relationships could be used to estimate metal exposure in welders from particle exposure. Welding processes were the most important determinant of exposure in apprentice welders, with Metal Core Arc Welding producing the largest particle concentrations followed by oxyacetylene cutting, and Gas Metal Arc Welding. Health risk assessment showed that welder apprentices are at risk for overexposure to manganese, which suggests that professional welders should be monitored for manganese as they are exposed more than apprentices. Training in proper positioning of local exhaust ventilation system and proper use of respirators are recommended in training facilities.

Metal(loid) exposure on children from a historical metallurgical site

The data obtained in this study represent a comprehensive assessment of human exposure to metal(loids) enriched in the environment, derived from metallurgical activities in Cedral, a town in North-Central Mexico. A multi-elemental analysis (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Sb) shows high metal(loid) content in environmental media (tailings samples, dust samples and particulate matter < 2.5 µm collected in the urban area). Blood samples from school-age children were collected and analyzed to determine exposure levels. The assessment of the data obtained from this study shows that Sb and Cd are highly enriched elements in the environment of Cedral; their respective levels in the blood samples analyzed are 10.9 and 11.3 times higher than their pediatric reference levels. The statistical analysis indicates a strong relationship between metal(loid)s in blood samples and both dust and PM_2.5 samples, which reveal that ingestion and inhalation could represent important exposure routes for metal(loid) intake. Continuous monitoring in the area is paramount to assess the health impact posed by the different routes of exposure. It is also important to implement health education programs to decrease the population's exposure to metal(loid)s and to design urgent remediation measures, to be implemented as soon as possible.

Complex Mechanisms of Antimony Genotoxicity in Budding Yeast Involves Replication and Topoisomerase I-Associated DNA Lesions, Telomere Dysfunction and Inhibition of DNA Repair

Antimony is a toxic metalloid with poorly understood mechanisms of toxicity and uncertain carcinogenic properties. By using a combination of genetic, biochemical and DNA damage assays, we investigated the genotoxic potential of trivalent antimony in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We found that low doses of Sb(III) generate various forms of DNA damage including replication and topoisomerase I-dependent DNA lesions as well as oxidative stress and replication-independent DNA breaks accompanied by activation of DNA damage checkpoints and formation of recombination repair centers. At higher concentrations of Sb(III), moderately increased oxidative DNA damage is also observed. Consistently, base excision, DNA damage tolerance and homologous recombination repair pathways contribute to Sb(III) tolerance. In addition, we provided evidence suggesting that Sb(III) causes telomere dysfunction. Finally, we showed that Sb(III) negatively effects repair of double-strand DNA breaks and distorts actin and microtubule cytoskeleton. In sum, our results indicate that Sb(III) exhibits a significant genotoxic activity in budding yeast.

Characteristics, Accumulation, and Potential Health Risks of Antimony in Atmospheric Particulate Matter

Antimony (Sb), a priority pollutant listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), can cause adverse effects on human health, with particular impacts on skin, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory system. In this study, a database of Sb concentrations in the global atmosphere was developed through a survey of measurements published in more than 600 articles, which was then used to assess the health risks of Sb exposure based on a USEPA assessment model. Most measurements showed Sb concentrations of less than ∼10 ng m-3, but those at several contaminated sites exhibited Sb concentrations of more than 100 ng m-3. For measurements conducted in urban environments, Sb concentrations in the total suspended particles (TSP) and particles of less than 10 (PM10) or 2.5 μm (PM2.5) were the highest in Asia, followed by Europe, South America, and North America. Sb concentrations were generally higher in winter and fall than during other seasons in TSP and PM10 samples. A significant correlation was observed between Sb and As in TSP and PM2.5 on a global scale. Sb was mainly derived from anthropogenic sources, especially traffic emission, industrial emission, and fossil combustion. Hazard quotients (HQ) of Sb in TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 were higher for children than adults because of their lighter body weight, inferior physical resistance, and higher ingestion probability. The global database for atmospheric Sb concentrations demonstrates a relatively low noncarcinogenic risk in most regions. Long-term monitoring is still required to identify the sources and growth potentials of Sb so that effective control policies can be established.

Contamination of rice crop with potentially toxic elements and associated human health risks-a review

Production of rice, a major staple food crop, should be maintained both quantitatively and qualitatively to assure global food security. In recent decades, various natural (biogeochemical weathering of rocks) and anthropogenic (increased application of agrochemicals, solid and liquid waste discharges from domestic and industrial areas, vehicular pollution, etc.) activities have deteriorated soil and water resources by contributing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) to the environment. Shortage of land resources and requirements of the ever-increasing human population has led to increasing global trend of rice cultivation in contaminated soils, causing accumulation of various PTEs such as arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cobalt (Co), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) in rice crop, especially in the grains. Rice plants uptake and accumulate PTEs leading to their entry into the food chain. Consumption of rice contaminated with PTEs disturbs the human metabolism as PTEs interfere with different physiological/molecular mechanisms causing various health problems such as weak bones; skin problems; respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous, reproductive, and hepatic disorders; and cancer. Possible non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks have been determined in some studies by following the guidelines provided by various governmental or non-governmental agencies. Considering these facts, the present study was conducted to give a broader perspective on rice contamination with various potentially toxic elements, their bioconcentration in rice, associated health risks in human beings, and strategies for bioremediation of soil and water resources to eliminate PTEs.

Hazardous minerals mining: Challenges and solutions

Minerals are valuable resources gifted to man from the Mother Earth and quite often they need to be dug out from deep down with much effort to utilize them in many of our anthropogenic activities. The fascinating nature, colours as well as the physicochemical properties of minerals has extended their prospective value in the synthesis of various household and industrial products. However, knowledge of the mostly explored minerals, associated products, and their hazardous nature becomes relevant to its prevalence in our daily life. The harmful effects of some minerals are mostly evident from its site of occurrence, process of mining, post mining wastes left over and even in finished products. The current review focuses to evaluate the hazardous nature of minerals, cautions associated with its mining, drastic effects on human health, and ecosystem as an eye-opener to us. Finally, the effective remedies that could be implemented in the exploration of minerals are also discussed to the best of our knowledge. Bioleaching methods of rare earth elements and copper have been discussed briefly to explain the pros and cons of biological methods over conventional chemical leaching methods.

Investigation of pollution history in XKS mining area in China using dendrochronology and LA-ICP-MS

Past pollution episodes and the intensity of mining activity in a contaminated region can be unraveled, using archived elemental information in tree rings. Elemental dendrochronology can be utilized with laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to make a timeline of metal(loid)s uptake in trees. In this study, six tree core samples from five tree species were collected around the XKS antimony mine region in Hunan, China, which is impacted by metal pollution: NM1 shuitong (Camptotheca acuminate L.), M1 shuitong (Camptotheca acuminate L.), G1 xiangchun (Toona sinensis L.), J2 wutong (Firmiana platanifolia L.), BSN kulian (Melia azedarach L.), and MT1 zhang (Cinnamomum camphora L.). Tree cores were dated by counting annual rings, and concentrations of As, Ca, Pb, Sb, and Zn were determined using LA-ICP-MS. Results demonstrate that the highest concentrations of Sb are present in the areas closer to mining activity: NM1 - north mine (shuitong), MT1 - mine tailing site (zhang), and BSN - between south and north mine (kulian) tree cores have average Sb concentrations of 18.8 mg/kg, 13 mg/kg, and 4.8 mg/kg, respectively. In comparison, at the village sites located farther away from the mining areas, G1 xiangchun, J2 wutong, and M1 shuitong have average Sb concentrations of 0.69 mg/kg, 0.57 mg/kg, and 0.66 mg/kg, respectively. NM1 shuitong, G1 xiangchun, and MT1 zhang all have large Sb and Zn peaks around 1986, while BSN kulian has larger Sb peaks slightly later around 1988-1990. J2 wutong has Sb peaks somewhat earlier, at 1977 and 1980. Unlike the others trees, M1 shuitong has greater Sb concentrations in more recent years (2009, 2015-2016) demonstrating Sb pollution.

The influence of association of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and zero-valent iron nanoparticles on removal of antimony from soil by Trifolium repens

Using association of plants, nanomaterials, and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPR) is a novel approach in remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Co-application of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) and PGPR to promote phytoremediation of Sb-contaminated soil was investigated in this study. Seedlings of Trifolium repens were exposed to different regimes of nZVI (0, 150, 300, 500, and 1000 mg/kg) and the PGPR, separately and in combination, to investigate the effects on plant growth, Sb uptake, and accumulation and physiological response of the plant in contaminated soil. Co-application of nZVI and PGPR had positive effects on plant establishment and growth in contaminated soil. Greater accumulation of Sb in the shoots compared to the roots of T. repens was observed in all treatments. Using nZVI significantly increased accumulation capacity of T. repens for Sb with the greatest accumulation capacity of 3896.4 μg per pot gained in the "PGPR+500 mg/kg nZVI" treatment. Adverse impacts of using 1000 mg/kg nZVI were found on plant growth and phytoremediation performance. Significant beneficial effect of integrated use of nZVI and PGPR on plant photosynthesis was detected. Co-application of nZVI and PGPR could reduce the required amounts of nZVI for successful phytoremediation of metalloid polluted soils. Intelligent uses of plants in accompany with nanomaterials and PGPR have great application prospects in removal of antimony from soil.

Positive regulation of the CREB phosphorylation via JNK-dependent pathway prevents antimony-induced neuronal apoptosis in PC12 cell and mice brain

Antimony (Sb) is a potentially toxic chemical element abundantly found in the environment. We previously reported that Sb promoted neuronal deathvia reactive oxygen species-dependent autophagy. Here, we assessed the role of cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB) in Sb-induced neuronal damage. We found that Sb treatment induced CREB phosphorylation and neuronal apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Interestingly, inhibition of CREB's transcriptional activity with 666-15 dramatically enhanced apoptosis in PC12 cells by downregulating B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2). Additionally, Sb activated ERK, JNK, and p38 signaling ; however, only JNK promoted CREB phosphorylation. In conclusion, our findings suggest that CREB phosphorylation by JNK attenuates Sb-induced neuronal apoptosis via Bcl-2 upregulation. These data suggest that JNK-dependent CREB activation prevents neurons from Sb-induced apoptosis and guides the development of novel strategies to prevent Sb-induced neurotoxicity.

Co-application of biochar and titanium dioxide nanoparticles to promote remediation of antimony from soil by Sorghum bicolor: metal uptake and plant response

Association of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) and biochar (BC) to assist phytoremediation of Sb contaminated soil was investigated in this study. Seedlings of Sorghum bicolor were exposed to different regimes of TiO₂ NPs (0, 100, 250 and 500 mg kg^-1) and BC (0, 2.5% and 5%), separately and in combination, to investigate the effects on plant growth, Sb absorption and accumulation and physiological response of the plant in Sb contaminated soil. Co-application of TiO₂ NPs and BC had positive effects on plant establishment and growth in contaminated soil. Greater accumulation of Sb in the shoots compared to the roots of S. bicolor was observed in all treatments. Application of BC increased immobilization of Sb in the soil. Using TiO₂ NPs significantly increased accumulation capacity of S. bicolor for Sb with the greatest accumulation capacity of 1624.1 μg per pot achieved in "250 mg kg^-1 TiO₂ NPs+2.5% BC" treatment (P < 0.05). Association of TiO₂ NPs and BC significantly increased chlorophyll a (Chl a) and chlorophyll b (Chl b) contents of S. bicolor compared to the TiO₂ NPs-amended treatments. Results of this study presented a promising novel technique by combined application of TiO₂ NPs and BC in phytoremediation of Sb contaminated soils. Co-application of TiO₂ NPs and BC could reduce the required amounts of TiO₂ NPs for successful phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soils. Intelligent uses of plants in accompany with biochar and nanomaterials have great application prospects in dealing with soil remediation.

Strontium and antimony serum levels in healthy individuals living in high- and low-risk areas of esophageal cancer

Background

It has been shown there is an upward trend for strontium (Sr) and antimony (Sb) levels from low‐risk (LR) to high‐risk (HR) areas of etiology of esophageal cancer in water, soil, and grains grown in Golestan province. In the present study, the serum levels of Sr and Sb were determined in healthy individuals living in these areas.

Methods

This cross‐sectional study was performed on fasting blood serum of adult healthy individuals collected by cluster sampling. Subjects were divided into two groups, those living in either HR or LR areas. Strontium and antimony serum levels were measured using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Results

A total of 200 volunteers were enrolled from which 96 persons (48%) and 104 persons (52%) were from either HR or LR areas, respectively. The sex distribution was 40.9% male and 59.1% female, and the average age of enrolled people was 50.9 years. The average strontium levels were 30.44 ± 4.05 and 30.29 ± 3.74 μg/L in LR and HR, respectively. It also has been shown the average antimony levels were 15.21 ± 3.40, 14.81 ± 3.17, 15.13 ± 3.62, and 15.07 ± 3.62 μg/L in LR, HR, urban, and rural populations, respectively.

Conclusion

The serum levels of strontium and antimony were not significantly different in healthy adults living in high‐ and low‐risk areas of esophageal cancer. However, the average antimony serum levels in Golestan Province were above the reference interval in different countries.

Interactive effects of arsenic and antimony on Ipomoea aquatica growth and bioaccumulation in co-contaminated soil

Antimony (Sb) is an emerging contaminant and until recently it was assumed to behave in a similar way to arsenic (As). Arsenic and Sb often co-occur in contaminated sites, yet most investigations consider their toxicity to plants singly. More research is needed to understand the interactions between As and Sb in soils and plants. This study investigated the interactive effect of As and Sb in terms of soil bioavailability, plant toxicity and bioaccumulation on the commercially important agricultural plant, water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) using a pot experiment. Plants were exposed to As and Sb individually (As _(individual), Sb _(individual)) and as a mixture (As + Sb _(combined)) at different concentrations. Plant growth was measured using shoot and root dry mass, length and chlorophyll a content of leaves. At the end of the bioassay, bioavailable metalloids were extracted from the soil as per a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) and plant tissue was analysed for metalloid content. For As, there were no differences observed between the bioavailability of As in the As + Sb _(combined) and As _(individual) treatments. For Sb, no increase in bioavailability was observed with co-contamination compared to single-Sb exposures for most concentrations except at 1250 mg/kg. Single-Sb was not toxic to I. aquatica shoot dry mass and length, but there was greater shoot Sb accumulation in the As + Sb _(combined) than the Sb _(individual) treatment. In contrast, single-As was toxic to I. aquatica growth. When As and Sb were present together in the soil, there was a synergistic toxicity to shoot dry mass (EC₅₀ Toxic Unit (TU) was less than 1) and additive toxicity (EC₅₀ equal to 1 TU) to shoot length. This work shows that the co-occurrence of As and Sb in soil increases Sb bioavailability and can cause synergistic toxicity to an important agricultural crop.

Classification of plastic waste originated from waste electric and electronic equipment based on the concentration of antimony

The aim of this research is a preliminary assessment of antimony concentration in plastic fractions deriving from different e-waste. We considered microwave ovens, desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones, a TV case, a PC monitor and LED lamps (63 items in total). The plastic fraction ranged from 8%-wt in computers and microwave ovens, up to 40%-wt in cell phones and 59%-wt in LED lamps. Specific polymers were identified through Near Infrared spectroscopy. The samples followed three parallel procedures: acid digestion with aqua regia; conversion into ashes at 600 °C then acid digestion with aqua regia; leaching according to UNI10802 reference procedure. Plastic components with significant amounts of antimony were the ones derived from desktop computers (25-1900 mg/kg) and from microwave ovens (830 mg/kg), yet their relative amount compared to the total weight of the item was limited. Items with larger plastic fractions showed lower concentrations of antimony (1-6 mg/kg in mobile phones cases and 160-640 mg/kg in plastic components of LED lamps). Leaching tests revealed that the analyzed plastic fractions could be mostly admitted in non-hazardous waste landfills. The analysis of ashed samples highlighted the need to further improve the acidic extraction procedure.

Sources and behavior of trace elements in groundwater in the South Eastern Desert, Egypt

Due to water scarcity, the groundwater will represent an essential source of water in many communities worldwide. This study was carried out to investigate the main hydrogeochemical characteristic of trace elements composition, their sources, and its vulnerability in groundwater to the human population. Fifteen groundwater samples were collected from boreholes and hand dug wells from the South Eastern Desert, Egypt, and analyzed for Al, As, B, Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sr, Th, U, V, and Zn using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Multivariate analyses were applied to identify the distribution and potential source of trace elements. The groundwater is tapped from the Miocene and the fractured basement rock aquifers. The mean concentrations of trace elements exceed the guideline values of all organizations, except in some wells for Zn, Cu, and Co. Cationic trace elements declined in the order of Mn > Fe > Zn > Al > V > Ni > Rb > Sr > U > Cu > Cr > Co > Cd > Pb > Th > Sb > Hg. Oxyanions As (mean 15.48 mg/L) and B (mean 1.24 mg/L) showed very high concentrations and higher than the average WHO concentrations in water suggesting potential adverse toxicity to all aquatic organisms. Five factor analyses indicated that different geochemical contributions are involved in the chemical characteristics of groundwater in the study area. Water-rock interaction and dissolution processes in bed rocks from different coastal Miocene deposits, meta-volcanics, basic-ultrabasic rocks, granitic and meta-sediments, seawater intrusion, residential wastes, and mining activities, in addition to the pH/Eh conditions, adsorption, and surface complexation during the chemical weathering are the main factors influence the trace elements distribution in groundwater. Results from this study for the six different groundwater aquifers are a unique insight into the sources and mobility of the observed trace elements in the groundwater and can be used in the assessment of contamination for drinking water wells. The association of trace elements from different aquifers might be useful in tracers studies of water-rock interaction. Due to the enrichment of trace elements in nearshore and crystalline groundwater aquifers in the study area and in similar areas worldwide, treatment technologies, and sustainable water management processes should be applied to prevent severe risks to the communities.

Arsenic, antimony, and nickel leaching from northern peatlands treating mining influenced water in cold climate

Increased metal mining in the Arctic region has caused elevated loads of arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), nickel (Ni), and sulfate (SO₄^2-) to recipient surface or groundwater systems. The need for cost-effective active and passive mine water treatment methods has also increased. Natural peatlands are commonly used as a final step for treatment of mining influenced water. However, their permanent retention of harmful substances is affected by influent concentrations and environmental conditions. The effects of dilution, pH, temperature, oxygen availability, and contaminant accumulation on retention and leaching of As, Sb, Ni, and sulfate from mine process water and drainage water obtained from treatment peatlands in Finnish Lapland were studied in batch sorption experiments, and discussed in context of field data and environmental impacts. The results, while demonstrating effectiveness of peat to remove the target contaminants from mine water, revealed the risk of leaching of As, Sb, and SO₄^2- from treatment peatlands when diluted mine water was introduced. Sb was more readily leached compared to As while leaching of both was supported by higher pH of 9. No straightforward effect of temperature and oxygen availability in controlling removal and leaching was evident from the results. The results also showed that contaminant accumulation in treatment peatlands after long-term use can lead to decreased removal and escalated leaching of contaminants, with the effect being more pronounced for As and Ni.
