Vulvovaginitis in wildebeest caused by the virus of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis

Comparative molecular epidemiological investigation on different bovine herpes viruses

Eight Bulgarian bovine herpes viruses, two Hungarian herpes viruses 1A, 3A, calves isolate named Mramor, buffalo isolate 723 and two referents BHV 1 strains were investigated by restrictase fragment pattern analysis. Migration profile of viral DNA by using different restrictase enzymes Hpa I, BamH I and Hind III were compared. Clearly differences among two Hungarian strains, calves isolate Mramor, buffalo isolate 723 and 8 Bulgarian and two referents BHV 1 strain was observed. The strain Sartze was determined as a genital type BHV 1, whereas Ozet, Tch.voda, Slivnitza, B. Budinov, Ptcelarovo, Vrana and Podgumer as a respiratory type. Hungarian strains 1A, 3A, calves isolate Mramor and buffalo isolate 723 had similar migration profile as swine herpes viruses. Hybridisation between the K 22 fragment and 8 bovine herpes viruses after Southern blotting were observed. That is evidence for genetic relation of these strains. Such hybridisation with Hungarian 1A, 3A, Mramor and buffaloes 723 strains were not observed. This fact allowed us to conclude that these strains are genetically different from BHV 1.

Detection of bovine rhinotracheitis virus antibody by neutralizing test and ELISA in experimentally infected rabbits

The antibody response of rabbit to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus was examined. Two rabbits were inoculated with IBR virus strain Los Angeles into the trachea and intravenously, and intravenously two times, respectively. The patterns of antibody titers in the rabbits measured by neutralization test and ELISA were similar to those in the case of bovine. The antibody was detected after the inoculation, and much more antibody was detected after the second inoculation. The fact suggests that rabbits are a very useful laboratory animal for IBR virus infection studies.

Immunoblotting analysis of the reaction of wildebeest, sheep and cattle sera with the structural antigens of alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (malignant catarrhal fever virus)

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a disease of cattle and some other ruminants caused by alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AHV-1), a virus of wildebeest. The disease also occurs in the absence of wildebeest and is then thought to be caused by a viral agent harboured by the sheep. The structural proteins of AHV-1 have been used as antigens for the immunoblotting analysis of sera from wildebeest, sheep and cattle infected by either AHV-1 or the "sheep-associated" form of the disease. Wildebeest sera showed a uniform response reacting strongly with six polypeptides. Sheep sera also gave positive results but individual sera reacted with varying subsets of the antigens recognized by wildebeest. These results support the earlier suggestion that sheep harbour a herpesvirus related to AHV-1. A bovine serum from a case of MCF caused by AHV-1 also reacted only with a subset of the six wildebeest-reactive polypeptides. Sera from cattle affected with the "sheep-associated" form of the disease gave reactions in only two of the eight cases tested; both positive sera reacted to a few polypeptides only.
