Firefly-inspired bipolar information indication system actuated by white light

The indication of information in materials is widely used in our daily life, and optical encoding materials are ideal for information loading due to their easily readable nature and adjustable optical properties. However, most of them could only indicate one type of information, either changing or unchanging due to the mutual interference. Inspired by firefly, we present a non-interfering bipolar information indication system capable of indicating both changing and unchanging information. A photochemical afterglow material is incorporated into the photonic crystal matrix through a high-throughput technique called shear-induced ordering technique, which can efficiently produce large-area photonic crystal films. The indication of changing and unchanging information is enabled by two different utilizations of white light by the afterglow material and photonic crystals, respectively, which overcome the limitations of mutual interference. As a proof of concept, this system is used to indicate the changing photodegradation level of mecobalamin (a photosensitive medicine) and unchanging intrinsic drug information with anti-counterfeiting functionality, which is a promising alternative to instantly ascertain the efficacy of medicine at home where conventional assays are impractical.

Regulation of Fluorescence and Self-assembly of a Salicylaldehyde Azine-Containing Amphiphile by Pillararene

Regulation of fluorescence and self-assembly of a salicylaldehyde azine-containing amphiphile by a water-soluble pillar[5]arene via host-guest recognition in water was realized. The fluorescence and the self-assembled aggregates of the bola-type amphiphile G can be tailored by adding different amounts of water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5). In addition, the emission property and self-assembly behavior of G and WP5 are responsive to pH conditions. Furthermore, the fluorescence emission property of G and the regulation by WP5 or pH conditions was applied as information encryption material, rewritable paper, and erasable ink. We believe that this fluorescence regulation strategy is promising for the construction of advanced fluorescent organic materials.

Applications of Hydrogels in Osteoarthritis Treatment

This review critically evaluates advancements in multifunctional hydrogels, particularly focusing on their applications in osteoarthritis (OA) therapy. As research evolves from traditional natural materials, there is a significant shift towards synthetic and composite hydrogels, known for their superior mechanical properties and enhanced biodegradability. This review spotlights novel applications such as injectable hydrogels, microneedle technology, and responsive hydrogels, which have revolutionized OA treatment through targeted and efficient therapeutic delivery. Moreover, it discusses innovative hydrogel materials, including protein-based and superlubricating hydrogels, for their potential to reduce joint friction and inflammation. The integration of bioactive compounds within hydrogels to augment therapeutic efficacy is also examined. Furthermore, the review anticipates continued technological advancements and a deeper understanding of hydrogel-based OA therapies. It emphasizes the potential of hydrogels to provide tailored, minimally invasive treatments, thus highlighting their critical role in advancing the dynamic field of biomaterial science for OA management.

Fine Optimization of Colloidal Photonic Crystal Structural Color for Physically Unclonable Multiplex Encryption and Anti-Counterfeiting

Robust anti-counterfeiting techniques aim for easy identification while remaining difficult to forge, especially for high-value items such as currency and passports. However, many existing anti-counterfeiting techniques rely on deterministic processes, resulting in loopholes for duplication and counterfeiting. Therefore, achieving high-level encryption and easy authentication through conventional anti-counterfeiting techniques has remained a significant challenge. To address this, this work proposes a solution that combined fluorescence and structural colors, creating a physically unclonable multiplex encryption system (PUMES). In this study, the physicochemical properties of colloidal photonic inks are systematically adjusted to construct a comprehensive printing phase diagram, revealing the printable region. Furthermore, the brightness and color saturation of inkjet-printed colloidal photonic crystal structural colors are optimized by controlling the substrate's hydrophobicity, printed droplet volume, and the addition of noble metals. Finally, fluorescence is incorporated to build PUMES, including macroscopic fluorescence and structural color patterns, as well as microscopic physically unclonable fluorescence patterns. The PUMES with intrinsic randomness and high encoding capacity are authenticated by a deep learning algorithm, which proved to be reliable and efficient under various observation conditions. This approach can provide easy identification and formidable resistance against counterfeiting, making it highly promising for the next-generation anti-counterfeiting of currency and passports.

Cephalopod-Inspired Chemical-Gated Hydrogel Actuation Systems for Information 3D-Encoding Display

Cephalopods evolve the acetylcholine-gated actuation control function of their skin muscles, which enables their dynamic/static multimode display capacities for achieving perfectly spatial control over the colors/patterns on every inch of skin. Reproduction of artificial analogs that exhibit similar multimodal display is essential to reach advanced information three-dimensional (3D) encoding with higher security than the classic 2D-encoding strategy, but remains underdeveloped. The core difficulty is how to replicate such chemical-gated actuation control function into artificial soft actuating systems. Herein, this work proposes to develop azobenzene-functionalized poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogel systems, whose upper critical solution temperature (UCST) type actuation responsiveness can be intelligently programmed or even gated by the addition of hydrophilic α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) molecules for reversible association with pendant azobenzene moieties via supramolecular host-guest interactions. By employing such α-CD-gated hydrogel actuator as an analogue of cephalopods' skin muscle, biomimetic mechanically modulated multicolor fluorescent display systems are designed, which demonstrate a conceptually new α-CD-gated "thermal stimulation-hydrogel actuation-fluorescence output" display mechanism. Consequently, high-security 3D-encoding information carriers with an unprecedented combination of single-input multiple-output, dynamic/static dual-mode and spatially controlled display capacities are achieved. This bioinspired strategy brings functional-integrated features for artificial display systems and opens previously unidentified avenues for information security.

Direct in Situ Fabrication of Multicolor Afterglow Carbon Dot Patterns with Transparent and Traceless Features via Laser Direct Writing

Multicolor afterglow patterns with transparent and traceless features are important for the exploration of new functionalities and applications. Herein, we report a direct in situ patterning technique for fabricating afterglow carbon dots (CDs) based on laser direct writing (LDW) for the first time. We explore a facile step-scanning method that reduces the heat-affected zone and avoids uneven heating, thus producing a fine-resolution afterglow CD pattern with a minimum line width of 80 μm. Unlike previous LDW-induced luminescence patterns, the patterned CD films are traceless and transparent, which is mainly attributed to a uniform heat distribution and gentle temperature rise process. Interestingly, by regulating the laser parameters and CD precursors, an increased carbonization and oxidation degree of CDs could be obtained, thus enabling time-dependent, tunable afterglow colors from blue to red. In addition, we demonstrate their potential applications in the in situ fabrication of flexible and stretchable optoelectronics.

Photosensitizer-loaded hydrogels: A new antibacterial dressing

Bacterial wound infection has emerged as a pivotal threat to human health worldwide, and the situation has worsened owing to the gradual increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria caused by the improper use of antibiotics. To reduce the use of antibiotics and avoid the increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, researchers are increasingly paying attention to  photodynamic therapy, which uses light to produce reactive oxygen species to kill bacteria. Treating bacteria-infected wounds by photodynamic therapy requires fixing the photosensitizer (PS) at the wound site and maintaining a certain level of wound humidity. Hydrogels are materials with a high water content and are well suited for fixing PSs at wound sites for antibacterial photodynamic therapy. Therefore, hydrogels are often loaded with PSs for treating bacteria-infected wounds via antibacterial photodynamic therapy. In this review, we systematically summarised the antibacterial mechanisms and applications of PS-loaded hydrogels for treating bacteria-infected wounds via photodynamic therapy. In addition, the recent  studies and the research status progresses of novel antibacterial hydrogels are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of PS-loaded hydrogels are reviewed.

Stimulus-responsive polymer materials toward multi-mode and multi-level information anti-counterfeiting: recent advances and future challenges

Information storage and security is one of the perennial hot issues in society, while the further advancements of related chemical anti-counterfeiting systems remain a formidable challenge. As emerging anti-counterfeiting materials, stimulus-responsive polymers (SRPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique stimulus-responsiveness and charming discoloration performance. At the same time, single-channel decryption technology with low-security levels has been unable to effectively prevent information from being stolen or mimicked. As a result, it would be of great significance to develop SRPs with multi-mode and multi-level anti-counterfeiting characteristics. This study summarizes the latest achievements in advance anti-counterfeiting strategies based on SRPs, including multi-mode anti-counterfeiting (static information) and multi-level anti-counterfeiting (dynamic information). In addition, the promising applications of such materials in anti-counterfeiting labels, identification platforms, intelligent displays, and others are briefly reviewed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are discussed. This review serves as a useful resource for manipulating SRP-based anti-counterfeiting materials and creating cutting-edge information security and encryption systems.

Multifunctional Organohydrogels for pH-Responsive Fluorescent and Electrostimulus Writing

Hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in anticounterfeiting due to their unique physical/chemical properties and designability. However, hydrogels' poor mechanical properties and sluggish response to chemical stimuli pose challenges for their wide application. A fluorescent tough organohydrogel capable of freeform writing of information is reported in this work. By incorporation of the fluorescent monomer 7-methylacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin into the polyacrylamide network in a covalently cross-linked manner while intertwining with the carboxymethyl cellulose sodium network, a fluorescent tough organohydrogel with a dual-network structure is prepared. The organohydrogel shows acid-base-mediated adjustable fluorescence through the transformation of fluorescent monomers. Ion printing and electrical stimulation design achieved free information storage and encryption. In addition, the prepared organohydrogel has good antifreezing properties and can be encrypted and decrypted at subzero temperatures. The encrypted information in the organohydrogel can be read only after UV-light irradiation. These patterned fluorescent organohydrogels should find applications in protected message displays for improved information security.

Super Adhesive Fluorescent Materials for Encrypted Messages, Underwater Leak Repair, and Their Potential Application in Fluorescent Tattoos

Achieving high-performance luminescence for underwater bonding remains a significant challenge in materials science. This study addresses this issue by synthesizing a luminescent material based on an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) monomer and copolymerizing it with lipoic acid (LA) to create an AIE supramolecular polymer. The resulting copolymer exhibits strong fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 365 nm due to the AIE of TPEE and enables underwater adhesion. The P(LA-TPEE) polymer demonstrates potential for digital encryption and decryption of quick response (QR) codes underwater. Furthermore, it can dissolve well in anhydrous ethanol, producing an environment-friendly and super waterproof adhesive. Most notably, the P(LA-TPEE) solution can be sprayed on human skin, creating an invisible tattoo that only became visible under UV light due to the hydrogen bond (H-bond) and π-π structures. This smart tattoo can be quickly wiped away with alcohol, avoiding the painful and harmful process of tattoo removal. It can also be repeatedly applied to draw the preferred tattoo pattern. This AIE supramolecular polymer shows great potential in underwater adhesion and repair, underwater message encryption, and non-toxic and painless invisible tattooing. Overall, this study provides a valuable approach for material design in the future.

Turning enol* emission of SBOH via restricting twisted intramolecular charge transfer behavior by pressure

Stimuli-responsive luminogens with aggregation-induced emission and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties have applications in storage devices, anti-counterfeiting, imaging, and sensors. Nevertheless, group rotation appears in twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state, resulting in decreased fluorescence intensity. Inhibiting TICT remains a challenge based on their intrinsic molecular configuration. Herein, we present a simple facile pressure-induced method to restrict the TICT behavior. Steady-state spectroscopy measurement shows that fluorescence enhancement and color shifts can be achieved under high pressure. Combined with in situ high-pressure ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, the TICT behavior was restricted in two aspects. The ESIPT process was damaged, hence more particles stored in the E* state, and transferred to the TICT state hardly. Also, the rotation of (E)-dimethyl5-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)isophthalate (SBOH) was restricted, significantly increasing the fluorescence intensity. This approach provides a new strategy for the development of stimulus-responsive materials.

Highly Tough, Stretchable, and Recyclable Ionogels with Crosslink-Enhanced Emission Characteristics for Anti-Counterfeiting and Motion Detection

Traditional luminescent ionogels often suffer from poor mechanical properties and a lack of recyclability and regeneration, which limits their further application and sustainable development. Herein, a luminescent ionogel with strong mechanical properties and good recyclability has been designed and fabricated by introducing dynamic coordination bonds via in situ one-step crosslinking of acrylic acid in ionic liquid of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate by zinc dimethacrylate. Due to the special crosslinking of dynamic coordination bonds along with the hydrogen bond interaction, the as-prepared ionogel displays excellent stretchability and toughness, good self-adhesiveness, fast self-healability, and recyclability. Interestingly, the obtained ionogels exhibit tunable photoluminescence caused by the crosslink-enhanced emission (CEE) effect from the coordination bonds. Importantly, ionogels can be applied in information storage, information encryption, anti-counterfeiting due to their simple and in situ preparation method, and their special fluorescence performances. Moreover, an ionogel-based wearable sensor has rapid response time and a high gauge factor of 3.22 within a wide strain range from 1 to 700%, which can monitor various human movements accurately from subtle to large-scale motions. This paper offers a promising way to fabricate sustainable functional ionic liquid-based composites with CEE characteristics via an in situ one-step polymerization method.

Tunable Photochromism of Spirooxazine in the Solid State: A New Design Strategy Based on the Hypochromic Effect

As an important organic photofunctional material, spirooxazine (SO) usually does not exhibit photochromism in the solid state since the intermolecular π-π stacking impedes photoisomerization. Developing photochromic SO in the solid state is crucial for practical applications but is still full of challenges. Here, a series of spirooxazine derivatives (SO1-SO4) with bulky aromatic substituents at the 4- and 7-positions of the skeleton, which provide them with a large volume with which to undergo solid-state photochromism under mild conditions, is designed and synthesized. All the compounds SO1-SO4 exhibit tunable solid photochromism without ground colors, excellent fatigue resistance, and high thermal stability. Notably, it takes only 15 s for SO4 to reach the saturation of absorption intensity, thought to represent the fastest solid-state photoresponse of spirooxazines. X-ray crystal structures of the intermediate compound SO0 and the products SO1-SO2 as well as computational studies suggest that the bulky aromatic groups can lead to a hypochromic effect, allowing for the photochromism of SO in the solid state. The ideal photochromic properties of these spirooxazines open a new avenue for their applications in UV printing, quick response code, and related fields.

Regulating Aggregated Structures in Organohydrogels for On-Demand Information Encryption

As one of the most promising candidates for dynamic information storage, intelligent gels with tunable optical properties under external stimuli have received great attention. The implementation of transparency variation for information display is a favorable and versatile strategy but still faces the challenge of on-demand encryption-decryption. Herein, an optical tunable organohydrogel is prepared, which has interpenetrating heterogeneous networks consisting of hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) and hydrophobic polyoctadecyl methacrylate (PSMA). The long alkane side chains of PSMA endow the organohydrogel with the capacity of crystallization-melting transitions under the stimulus of heat, accompanied by transparent-opaque switching. In addition, the variations of transparency can also be achieved by water-induced hydrophobic association and microphase separation, resulting from the unique heterogeneous networks of the organohydrogel. Based on the abovementioned two aggregated structures, various pieces of information can be loaded on the organohydrogel by light writing or water printing with the assistance of masks. The coded information can be encrypted and decrypted by solvent replacement and temperature switching. This elaborately designed organohydrogel can act as an effective communication platform with an improved security level and ignite the sparks of developing novel information storage materials.

Noncancerous disease-targeting AIEgens

Noncancerous diseases include a wide plethora of medical conditions beyond cancer and are a major cause of mortality around the world. Despite progresses in clinical research, many puzzles about these diseases remain unanswered, and new therapies are continuously being sought. The evolution of bio-nanomedicine has enabled huge advancements in biosensing, diagnosis, bioimaging, and therapeutics. The recent development of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has provided an impetus to the field of molecular bionanomaterials. Following aggregation, AIEgens show strong emission, overcoming the problems associated with the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. They also have other unique properties, including low background interferences, high signal-to-noise ratios, photostability, and excellent biocompatibility, along with activatable aggregation-enhanced theranostic effects, which help them achieve excellent therapeutic effects as an one-for-all multimodal theranostic platform. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the overall progresses in AIEgen-based nanoplatforms for the detection, diagnosis, bioimaging, and bioimaging-guided treatment of noncancerous diseases. In addition, it details future perspectives and the potential clinical applications of these AIEgens in noncancerous diseases are also proposed. This review hopes to motivate further interest in this topic and promote ideation for the further exploration of more advanced AIEgens in a broad range of biomedical and clinical applications in patients with noncancerous diseases.

Dual Lewis Acid- and Base-Responsive Terpyridine-Based Hydrogel: Programmable and Spatiotemporal Regulation of Fluorescence for Chemical-Based Information Security

A huge amount of data inundated in our daily life; there is an ever-increasing need to develop a new strategy of information encryption-decryption-erasing. Herein, a polymeric DCTpy/PAM hydrogel has been fabricated to store information via controllable Eu³⁺/Zn²⁺ ionoprinting for hierarchical and multidimensional information decryption. Eu³⁺ and Zn²⁺ have a competition and dynamic interaction toward DCTpy under NH₃ stimuli in the polymeric DCTpy/PAM hydrogel network. The Eu(III)/Zn(II)@DCTpy/PAM hydrogel exhibits light red fluorescence of Eu³⁺ due to the antenna effect. Upon the addition of NH₃, dissociation of the Eu³⁺-DCTpy complex takes place, and the Zn(II)/DCTpy/NH₃ complex is formed with both ICT (intramolecular charge-transfer) and PET (photo-induced electron-transfer) process characteristics that exhibits yellow emission color. Subsequently, HCl can quench the fluorescence of the resulting hydrogel. By integrating transparency, adhesiveness, and programmable stimuli responsiveness of the hydrogel blocks in to one system, complex, multistage, and time-controlled information storage-encryption-decryption-erasing in sequence with multidimensions is illustrated via the molecule diffusion method. This work provides a novel and representative strategy in fabricating information encryption-decryption-erasing materials with high capacity and complexity by a simple terpyridine-based hydrogel.

Mechanical tough and multicolor aggregation-induced emissive polymeric hydrogels for fluorescent patterning

Aggregation-induced emissive fluorogens (AIEgens) are promising building blocks for fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (FPHs) because intense fluorescence intensities are usually guaranteed by spontaneous aggregates of hydrophobic AIEgens in a hydrophilic polymer network. However, most AIE-active FPHs are single-color fluorescent and cannot display tunable emission colors. Additionally, efforts to produce mechanically strong AIE-active hydrogels have been largely ignored, restricting their potential uses. Herein, we present the synthesis of an AIE-active methyl picolinate-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide monomer (MP-NI) for fabricating mechanical tough and multicolor FPHs. Owing to the introduction of bulky and coordinative methyl picolinate group, these specially designed MP-NI molecules were forced to adopt propeller-shaped conformation that renders them with intense aggregation-induced blue emission. Moreover, the MP-NI moieties grafted in a hydrogel matrix can sensitize red and green fluorescence of Eu³⁺and Tb³⁺ via antenna effect. Consequently, multicolor fluorescent hydrogels that sustain a high stress of 1 MPa were obtained by chemically introducing MP-NI moieties into dually cross-linked alginate polymer networks with high-density metal (Ca²⁺/Tb³⁺/Eu³⁺) coordination and hydrogen bonding crosslinks. Their capacity to enable the writing of arbitrary multicolor fluorescent patterns using Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ as inks were finally demonstrated, suggesting their potential uses for smart display and information encryption.

Information-Storage Expansion Enabled by a Resilient Aggregation-Induced-Emission-Active Nanocomposite Hydrogel

Advanced materials with high performance and distinctive function are one of the main driving forces for the development of human society. The selection of appropriate materials and adequately utilizing their features to apply them in a specific area rationally are of great significance but remain challenging. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel is developed by introducing a pH-responsive AIE luminogen (AIEgen) into a Laponite XLS/polyacrylamide-based NC hydrogel (Laponite is a trademark of the company BYK Additives Ltd.). The AIEgen can protonate to interact with the negatively charged clay through the electrostatic interaction, which results in a drastic fluorescence enhancement due to the restriction of intramolecular motion by the rigid clay to the protonated AIEgen. This behavior facilitates the input of fluorescent information with a high contrast ratio in the hydrogel by acid stimulation. Moreover, by utilizing the excellent resilience of the hydrogel, hierarchically inputting and displaying the information in the original and stretched states of the hydrogel film is realized, which achieves information-storage expansion and dual-encryption via switching between stretching and restoring the film. This work showcases fully and synergistically utilizing the superiorities of various advanced materials to achieve superior applications and should guide the future development of advanced materials in emerging areas.

AIEgen-Enabled Multicolor Visualization for the Formation of Supramolecular Polymer Networks

Extensive reports on the use of supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) in self-healing materials, controlled release system and degradable products have led more researchers to tap their potential owing to the unique properties. Yet, the attendant efforts in the visualization through conventional luminescence methods during the formation of SPNs have been met with limited success. Herein, we designed a special type of SPNs prepared by PPMU polymer chains containing pyrene benzohydrazonate (PBHZ) molecules as AIEgens for the multicolor visualization with naked eyes. The complete detection of the formation process of the networks relied on the PBHZ molecules with aggregation-induced ratiometric emission (AIRE) effect, which enabled the fluorescence of the polymer networks transits from blue to cyan, and then to green with the increasing crosslinking degree derived from the hydrogen bonds between 2-ureido-4-pyrimidone (UPy) units of the polymer chains. Additionally, we certificated the stimuli-responsiveness of the obtained SPNs, and the fluorescence change, as well as observing the morphology transition. The AIEgen-enabled multicolor visualization of the formation of SPNs may provide better understanding of the details of the crosslinking interactions in the microstructural evolution, giving more inspiration for the multifunctional products based on SPNs.

Programmable Multifunctional Gels with On-Demand Patterning Capability toward Hierarchical and Multi-Dimensional Encryption and Anti-Counterfeiting

Hydrogels capable of optical switching have recently become one of the most celebrated materials for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. However, challenges still remain for developing versatile gel-based platforms with on-demand multistage patterning and multi-dimensional encryption capacities as well as long-term stability. Herein, elaborately designed programmable and multifunctional gels with fascinating anti-swelling (swelling ratios < 0.1%), anti-freezing (below -70 °C), and anti-dehydration (over 3 months) abilities, solvent-induced reversible transparence variations, adjustable fluorescence, self-healing (86% in stress and 94% in strain), Fe³⁺-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA·2Na)-induced reversible shape memory, and fluorescence off/on switch capabilities are facilely fabricated based on glycidyl methacrylate functionalized graphene quantum dots and Al³⁺ cross-linked gelatin and polyacrylic acid. Employing a simple mask photopolymerization or welding technique, various patterns can be readily and hierarchically encrypted on-demand into a single gel label, which can be further fixed into complex multi-dimensional architectures while quenching fluorescence after the treatment with Fe³⁺ to achieve high-security-level information encryption originating from the synergistic effects of the above multifunctions. The encrypted multi-level information can only be stepwise decrypted by an authorized individual who has mastered all decryption keys. Therefore, the creative design strategy for programing multifunctional gels opens up the possibility for hierarchical and multi-dimensional information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Recent Progress in Smart Polymeric Gel-Based Information Storage for Anti-Counterfeiting

Information security protection has a tremendous impact on human life, social stability and national security, leading to the rapid development of anti-counterfeiting materials and related techniques. However, the traditional stored information on hard or dry media is often static and lacks functions, which makes it challenging to deal with increasing and powerful counterfeiting technologies. Modified intelligent polymeric gels exhibit color changes and shape morphing under external stimuli, which give them great potential for applications in information storage. This paper provides an overview of the latest progress in polymeric gel-based information storage materials in relation to counterfeiting. Following a brief introduction of anti-counterfeiting materials, the preparation methods for intelligent gels with adjustable colors (e.g., chemical colors and physical colors) and various encryption/decryption modes involving dimensions and diverse colors are outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects for information storage and anti-counterfeiting based on smart gels are discussed.

Mimicking Color-Changing Organisms to Enable the Multicolors and Multifunctions of Smart Fluorescent Polymeric Hydrogels

Fluorescent polymer hydrogels (FPHs) are of significant interest for diverse emerging applications such as visualized sensing, smart display, camouflaging skins, soft actuators/robots, because they can synergize the features of classic fluorescent polymers and hydrogels. With great efforts in the past decades, the major challenge in this field has been believed to be not whether a given FPH of interest can be prepared but how to fabricate robust FPHs with multicolor tunability and multifunctional synergy. Such materials will conceptually minimize the contribution of passive materials to the mass and size of the final system, holding great potential to facilitate multiple applications. To this end, one promising way is to learn from the Nature that has superb capability to forge delicate or sometimes beyond-imagination materials. Chameleons and cephalopods serve as typical examples, which are famous for not only diverse skin color adaptability under changing environmental demands, but also synergistic skin color and body gesture changes to communicate, warn, camouflage, etc. Biological studies revealed their structural color-changing capacity derives from different types of skin chromatophores and their rational multilayer arrangement in under-skin tissues. Besides, their superb ability to heterogeneously integrate soft tissues with disparate functions into topology-optimized architectures has led to various multifunctional performances. Such natural strategies, if replicated and implemented in artificial systems, would significantly benefit and advance the development of robust FPHs for various applications.In this Account, we summarizes the key advances of smart FPHs mainly achieved by our groups. We start by introducing the unique hierarchical multilayer structures of skin chromatophores in structural color-changing reptiles, followed by an in-depth discussion on how a rational integration of bioinspiration and man-made design makes it possible to largely expand the fluorescence color-changing range of smart FPHs to almost cover the whole visible spectrum. Then, to closely mimic the multifunctional behaviors of chameleons and cephalopods, we further develop efficient strategies to introduce supramolecular interactions or heterogeneously integrating smart FPHs with other soft materials with disparate functions, producing a number of multifunctional fluorescent polymeric hydrogel systems. These robust FPHs can find many frontier applications, including bioinspired synergistic color/shape switchable hydrogel actuators/robots, smart systems with on-demand fluorescent patterning capacities for displaying or information encryption, as well as robust chemosensors for important food or environmental analytes. We expect that the discussion presented in this Account would promote better understanding of the discoloration systems in nature, and advance the development of bioinspired color-changing materials.

A dynamic assembly-induced emissive system for advanced information encryption with time-dependent security

The development of advanced materials for information encryption with time-dependent features is essential to meet the increasing demand on encryption security. Herein, smart materials with orthogonal and temporal encryption properties are successfully developed based on a dynamic assembly-induced multicolour supramolecular system. Multicolour fluorescence, including blue, orange and even white light emissions, is achieved by controlling the supramolecular assembly of pyrene derivatives by tailoring the solvent composition. By taking advantage of the tuneable fluorescence, dynamically controlled information encryption materials with orthogonal encryption functions, e.g., 3D codes, are successfully developed. Moreover, time-dependent information encryption materials, such as temporal multi-information displays and 4D codes, are also developed by enabling the fluorescence-controllable supramolecular system in the solid phase, showing multiple pieces of information on a time scale, and the correct information can be identified only at a specified time. This work provides an inspiring point for the design of information encryption materials with higher security requirements.

Underwater luminescent labeling materials constructed from a supramolecular approach

Underwater labeling under complicated conditions is challenging for modern adhesive materials. In this work, a series of supramolecular polymer adhesives were successfully prepared via the non-covalent copolymerization of low-molecular-weight monomers (thioctic acid (TA) and tetraphenylethene derivatives (TPEs)). Strong adhesion effects were observed under various conditions. The poly(TA-TPE)s showed long-term stability in underwater labeling. Due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of TPEs, poly(TA-TPE)s showed great potential as fluorescent labeling materials in water. Complicated and cryptographic information can be stored in labeling structures, and analyzed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Supramolecular labeling showed excellent distinguishability in complex backgrounds. Meanwhile, fluorescent adhesives exhibited a number of advantages over visible colored labels.

Protein Hydrogels with Reversibly Patterned Multidimensional Fluorescent Images for Information Storage

Fluorescent polymeric hydrogels are promising soft and wet media for information storage that are desirable for lifelike biomaterials and flexible electronics. Hydrogels based on engineered proteins have attracted considerable interest. However, their potential utility as information storage media has remained largely unexplored. Here, we report a protein-based hydrogel that can serve as an information storage medium. Using LOVTRAP, which consists of protein LOV2 and its binding partner ZDark1, we developed a novel strategy to decorate/release fluorescent proteins onto/from a blank protein hydrogel slate in light-controlled and spatially defined fashions, reversibly generating fluorescent patterns such as quick response codes. To increase the information storage capacity, we further developed grayscale patterning to generate pseudo-colored multi-dimensional fluorescent images. Results of this new method demonstrate a novel reversible information storage approach in soft and wet materials and open a new avenue toward developing next-generation protein-based smart materials for information storage and anti-counterfeit applications.

Three-Color White Photoluminescence Emission Using Perovskite Nanoplatelets and Organic Emitter

Three organic blue-light-emitting tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were used as additives in the preparation of inorganic perovskite-structured green-light-emitting materials for three-color white-light emission. For these organic–inorganic light-emitting materials, two-color (blue and green) light-emitting films based on the CsPbBr₃ perovskite-structured green-light-emitting inorganic material were prepared. The three TPE derivatives were prepared by varying the number of bromide groups, and a distinct AIE effect was confirmed when the derivatives were dissolved in a water–tetrahydrofuran mixed solvent containing 90 vol% water. When 0.2 molar ratio of the 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)ethylene (TeBrTPE) additive was mixed with nanocrystal-pinning toluene solvent, the green-light-emission photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) value at 535 nm was 47 times greater than that of the pure bulk CsPbBr₃ without additives and a blue emission at 475 nm was observed from the TeBrTPE itself. When a CBP:Ir(piq)₃ film was prepared on top of this layer, three PL peaks with maximum wavelength values of 470, 535, and 613 nm were confirmed. The film exhibited white-light emission with CIE color coordinates of (0.25, 0.36).

Continuously Multiplexed Ultrastrong Raman Probes by Precise Isotopic Polymer Backbone Doping for Multidimensional Information Storage and Encryption

Raman-based super multiplexing has attracted great interest in imaging, biological analysis, identity security, and information storage. It still remains a great challenge to synthesize a large number of different Raman-active molecules to fulfill the Raman color palette. Here, we report a facile and systematic strategy to construct continuously multiplexed ultrastrong Raman probes. By precisely incorporating different ratios of ¹³C isotope into the backbone of poly(deca-4,6-diynedioic acid) (PDDA), we can obtain a library of PDDAs with tunable double-bond Raman frequencies and adjustable intensity ratios of two triple-bond (¹³C≡¹³C and ¹²C≡¹²C) Raman peaks, while retaining the ultrastrong Raman signals and physicochemical properties of the polymer. We also demonstrate the successful application of ¹³C-doped PDDAs as security inks to generate a novel 3D matrix barcode system for information encryption and high-density data storage. The isotopically doped PDDA series herein pave a new way to advance Raman-based super multiplexing for diverse applications.

Edible Matrix Code with Photogenic Silk Proteins

Counterfeit medicines are a healthcare security problem, posing not only a direct threat to patient safety and public health but also causing heavy economic losses. Current anticounterfeiting methods are limited due to the toxicity of the constituent materials and the focus of secondary packaging level protections. We introduce an edible, imperceptible, and scalable matrix code of information representation and data storage for pharmaceutical products. This matrix code is digestible as it is composed of silk fibroin genetically encoded with fluorescent proteins produced by ecofriendly, sustainable silkworm farming. Three distinct fluorescence emission colors are incorporated into a multidimensional parameter space with a variable encoding capacity in a format of matrix arrays. This code is smartphone-readable to extract a digitized security key augmented by a deep neural network for overcoming fabrication imperfections and a cryptographic hash function for enhanced security. The biocompatibility, photostability, thermal stability, long-term reliability, and low bit error ratio of the code support the immediate feasibility for dosage-level anticounterfeit measures and authentication features. The edible code affixed to each medicine can serve as serialization, track and trace, and authentication at the dosage level, empowering every patient to play a role in combating illicit pharmaceuticals.

Double Lock Label Based on Thermosensitive Polymer Hydrogels for Information Camouflage and Multilevel Encryption

Developing extra safety encryption technologies to prevent information leakage and combat fakes is in high demand but is challenging. Herein, we propose a "double lock" strategy based on both lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer hydrogels for information camouflage and multilevel encryption. Two types of hydrogels were synthesized by the method of random copolymerization. The number of -CO-NH₂ groups in the network structure of the hydrogels changed the enthalpic or entropic thermo-responsive hydrogels, and ultimately precisely controlled their phase transition temperature. The crosslink density of the polymer hydrogels governs the diffusion kinetics, resulting in a difference in the time for their color change. The combination of multiple LCST and UCST hydrogels in one label realized information encryption and dynamic information identification in the dimensions of both time and temperature. This work is highly interesting for the fields of information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and smart responsive materials.

Developing Novel Fabrication and Optimisation Strategies on Aggregation-Induced Emission Nanoprobe/Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogels for Bio-Applications

The current study describes a new technology, effective for readily preparing a fluorescent (FL) nanoprobe-based on hyperbranched polymer (HB) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogen with high brightness to ultimately develop FL hydrogels. We prepared the AIE nanoprobe using a microfluidic platform to mix hyperbranched polymers (HB, generations 2, 3, and 4) with AIE (TPE-2BA) under shear stress and different rotation speeds (0-5 K RPM) and explored the FL properties of the AIE nanoprobe. Our results reveal that the use of HB generation 4 exhibits 30-times higher FL intensity compared to the AIE alone and is significantly brighter and more stable compared to those that are prepared using HB generations 3 and 2. In contrast to traditional methods, which are expensive and time-consuming and involve polymerization and post-functionalization to develop FL hyperbranched molecules, our proposed method offers a one-step method to prepare an AIE-HB nanoprobe with excellent FL characteristics. We employed the nanoprobe to fabricate fluorescent injectable bioadhesive gel and a hydrogel microchip based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The addition of borax (50 mM) to the PVA + AIE nanoprobe results in the development of an injectable bioadhesive fluorescent gel with the ability to control AIEgen release for 300 min. When borax concentration increases two times (100 mM), the adhesion stress is more than two times bigger (7.1 mN/mm²) compared to that of gel alone (3.4 mN/mm²). Excellent dimensional stability and cell viability of the fluorescent microchip, along with its enhanced mechanical properties, proposes its potential applications in mechanobiology and understanding the impact of microstructure in cell studies.

Swelling-Induced Information Camouflage and Optical Decryption on a Transparent Recoverable Hydrogel Surface

Information camouflage and decryption on hydrogels rely on chemical stimuli such as pH, ultraviolet light, and chemical reactions, in which the cyclability is limited. This work develops a simpler yet effective physical method that can achieve the information camouflage on hydrogels by water swelling and decrypt it under white light. The information camouflage and decryption can proceed with unlimited cycles. To successfully reach the information camouflage, the hydrogel is synthesized with the water swelling ratio in weight as high as 250, which is enabled by the strong electrostatic repulsion of cationic moieties inside the network. At such a high water-swollen state, the hydrogel is still robust and elastic, which provides a mechanical basis to maintain the stability of the camouflaged information. We write information on the hydrogel surface by laser cutting. Upon immersing the hydrogel in water, the high swelling results in huge expansion of the hydrogel, thus inducing the information camouflage. With exposure to white light, the information can be decrypted and becomes visible again. Our protocol utilizes a simple physical process to enable the camouflage and decryption of complex information, which might open an alternative pathway for the development of hydrogel materials in the application of informatics.

AIE-active macromolecules: designs, performances, and applications

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) macromolecules as emerging luminescent materials gained increasing attention owing to their good processability, high brightness, wide functionality, and smart responsiveness, with great potential in many fields.
