Concentration of potentially toxic elements in fillet shrimps of Mediterranean Sea: Systematic review, meta-analysis and health risk assessment

In this study, an attempt was made to meta-analyzed the concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in shrimps tissue of Mediterranean Sea and health risk of consumers was estimated. Search was conducted in international databases includes Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Science Direct and Web of Science from 1 January 2010 to 20 July 2023. The random effects model used to meta-analysis of concentration of PTEs in shrimp in subgroups. In addition, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for adults and children were calculated using target hazard quotient (THQ) and cancer risk (CR). Meta-analysis concentration of PTEs in shrimps was conducted using random effects model based on country subgroups. The rank order of PTEs based on mean (pooled) level in fillet of shrimps was Fe (15.395 mg/kg-ww) > Zn (10.428 mg/kg-ww) > Cu (6.941 mg/kg-ww) Pb (5.7 mg/kg-ww) > Ni (1.115 mg/kg-ww) > As (0.681 mg/kg-ww) > Cd (0.412 mg/kg-ww) > Hg (0.300 mg/kg-ww). THQ level in adults and children due to Cd and Pb in Italy was higher than 1 value. THQ level in adults and children due to Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn and inorganic As was lower than 1 value. CR due to inorganic As in Greece and Türkiye for adults and children was higher than 1E-6 value. Therefore, it was recommended to continuously monitor and reduce the concentration of PTEs in shrimps in Italy, Greece and Türkiye, especially.

Trophic transfer and biomagnification potential of environmental contaminants (heavy metals) in aquatic ecosystems

Physical, chemical weathering and volcanic eruptions release heavy metals into soils and surface waters naturally. Contaminants from anthropogenic sources originated from industrial and municipality waste substantially modify and increase their contributions. They are then absorbed by fish gills, amphipod cuticles, and other sensitive organs of aquatic creatures. This article discusses the essences on the determination, potential and plausible factors of trophic transfer and biomagnification of environmental contaminants particularly heavy metals across aquatic ecosystem. In general, arsenic is found to be bio-diminished across food webs in freshwater ecosystem while it biomagnified in marine ecosystem of higher trophic level (tertiary consumer of predatory fish) and dilute its concentration from lower trophic level (from producer to bottom level of consumer, secondary and lastly to tertiary consumer (forage fish)). Early study for Cadmium shown that it has no potential for biomagnification while later studies prove that cadmium does magnify for gastropod and epiphyte-based food webs. Mercury shown obvious biomagnification potential where it can bio-magnify from trophic level as low as particulate organic matter (POM) to higher trophic of fish. These findings proved that aquatic ecosystems must be preserved from contamination not just for human benefit, but also to prevent environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.

Comprehensive Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals Based on Species Sensitivity Distribution in Aquatic of Coastal Areas in Hong Kong

In recent decades, the ecological environment of some coastal areas in China has been seriously affected by terrestrial pollutants, and there is an urgent need for ecological risk assessment of China's coastal environment. The assessment of heavy metal pollution in Hong Kong waters was carried out using different environmental and ecological indicators. The heavy metal contents (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, As, Cr, and Hg) in the near coast of Hong Kong were analyzed for two different seasons of the year 2018 (April-spring and September-autumn). We assessed the distribution and enrichment of heavy metals in the near coast of Hong Kong, and the potential biohazardous effects were assessed using the species sensitivity distribution method. The results showed that only Pb, Zn, and Hg in seawater exceeded the Class I standard. Pb, Zn, Cd, and As in organisms exceeded the standard, and no heavy metals exceeded the standard in sediments. The species sensitivity distribution method indicated that the biohazardous factor of heavy metals of the Hong Kong coast is higher in spring than in autumn, and the potential hazard ratio has the characteristics of high northwest and low southeast, which leads to its msPAF also having these characteristics. From the correlational analyses among heavy metals, we found that the pH change in seawater was related to the concentration of heavy metals, the concentration of heavy metals in seawater was proportional to the salinity of seawater, Pb and Cu were likely to have the same source, and Zn and Cd may not have the same emission sources as the other heavy metals. Overall, heavy metal contamination of seawater, sediments, and organisms near the Hong Kong coast was within acceptable limits, but the problem of heavy metal dispersion should be prevented.

Accumulation potential of heavy metals at different growth stages of Pacific white leg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei farmed along the Southeast coast of Peninsular India: A report on ecotoxicology and human health risk assessment

This study compared the heavy metal concentration in water, sediment, and shrimp at different growth stages of culture and subsequently evaluated the ecotoxicological and human health risk status. Total trace element concentration in the water, sediment and shrimp ranged from not detected (ND) (Hg) to 91.05 (Fe) μg/L, 0.01 (Hg) to 19, 246.33 (Fe) mg/kg, and ND (Hg) to 13.98 (Fe) mg/kg, respectively. Toxic metals such as, Cd, Hg, and Pb in shrimps ranged from ND to 2.11 mg/kg, ND to 0.158 mg/kg, ND to 0.088 mg/kg, and ND to 0.469 mg/kg, respectively. Toxic heavy metals at all the growth stages of shrimps (days of culture (DOC)-01 to DOC-90) were found below the maximum residual limit (MRL) of 0.5 mg/kg set by the European Commission (EC). Similarly, Cu, Zn, and As concentrations in shrimp were also far below the MRLs of 30 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, and 76 mg/kg set by the World Health Organization and Food Safety and Standard Authority of India, respectively. The concentration of heavy metals increased from DOC-01 to DOC-90 and was positively correlated with the length and weight of the shrimps (p < 0.05). The risk assessment was estimated for both Indians and Americans and found no carcinogenic (lifetime cancer risk (LCR) < 10^-4) and non-carcinogenic (THQ and TTHQ<1) health risks through consumption of shrimp cultured in this region. The hazard quotient (HQ_dermal < 1), hazard index (HI < 1), and LCR (<10^-4) values of the heavy metals indicated that the dermal absorption might not be a concern for the local fishermen and marine fish/shrimp farmworkers. Water and sediment quality indices were applied to assess the surface water and sediment quality, and their results were found nil to low levels of heavy metal contamination at all the sampling sites. All heavy metals studied in sediments were < effect range low (ERL) and < threshold effect level (TEL), indicating no adverse biological effects on aquatic organisms. Therefore, regular monitoring of the shrimp aquaculture system throughout the crop will provide evidence of heavy metals bioaccumulation in shrimps. This research will provide baseline data to help farmers establish the optimal aquaculture practices and regulatory authorities to formulate legislation and strategies to reduce heavy metal biomagnification in shrimps from farm to fork.

Assessment of heavy metal distribution in seawater of Kakinada Bay, a tropical mangrove-rich coastal environment

The main objective of the present study is to estimate the heavy metal concentrations and ecological risk index (ERI) in the seawater of Kakinada Bay. Turbidity, suspended particulate matter (SPM), pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, along with heavy metals were recorded from twelve locations of the Bay to understand its hydrographical conditions. The distribution of environmental variables and heavy metal concentrations was noticed mostly from the south to north gradient. Significant positive correlations were detected in some pairs of metals such as Cu with Zn (R² = 0.515; p < 0.05), Pb with both Cr (R² = 0.810; p < 0.01) and Cd (R² = 0.511; p < 0.05), and Cr with Ni (R² = 0.573; p < 0.05) indicating their common origin. The ERI values (7.93-35.2) of seawater of Kakinada Bay in the present study were in the ecologically high-risk category. Industrial operations, domestic sewage, and natural processes are the major contaminant sources of Kakinada Bay leading its environment to a potential ecological concern.

Dose-dependent responses of metabolism and tissue injuries in clam Ruditapes philippinarum after subchronic exposure to cadmium

Marine cadmium (Cd) pollution has been globally occurring, which creates a pressing need to characterize toxicological effects and develop biomarkers for Cd. However, the dose-response relationships challenge toxicity characterization and biomarkers selection. Metabolic processes have been frequently targeted by Cd. In this work, we investigated the dose-dependent effects of Cd on metabolic endpoints in whole soft tissues as well as gill and hepatopancreas injuries in clam Ruditapes philippinarum, aiming to better understand the metabolic responses and develop biomarkers. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomic analysis was conducted on clam whole soft tissues to identify metabolites. The enzymes and metabolites associated with tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, glycolysis, and oxidative phosphorylation showed both monotonic and non-monotonic curves with the increase of Cd dose. In details, glutamine, glucose-1-phosphate, hexokinase (HK), and citrate synthase (CS) presented monotonic decreases with the increase of Cd dose, among which glutamine and CS were preferable biomarkers to Cd exposure based on lower benchmark dose (BMD) values. The monotonic decreases of HK and CS activities suggested Cd exposure potentially disrupted glycolysis and TCA cycle via inhibiting rate-limiting enzymes. In contrast, the non-monotonic responses of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and their substrates (succinate and alanine) were approximate to U- or J-shaped curves, suggesting the adaptive strategy of metabolic responses to different degrees of Cd stress, like induction of anaerobiosis as energy compensation. Especially, the alterations of succinate and SDH presented typical hormetic dose-response curves. What is more, clam hepatopancreas was more sensitive to Cd than gill in terms of injury occurrence. Overall, characterization of dose-dependent effect of Cd on metabolism and tissue injuries provides a new insight into understanding the metabolic adaptation in marine clams and risk assessment of Cd pollution.

Assessment of cadmium pollution and subsequent ecological and health risks in Jiaozhou Bay of the Yellow Sea

Million tons of cadmium (Cd) are annually discharged into China's coastal regions, creating a persistent hazard to marine organisms and human health. This study assessed Cd residues in the Yellow Sea's semi-enclosed Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), finding concentrations of 0.05-0.94 μg/L in seawater and 0.03-0.18 mg/kg in sediment. For marine organisms, mollusks had the highest Cd concentration (0.44 ± 0.09 mg/kg), followed by crustaceans (0.26 ± 0.08 mg/kg) and fish (0.10 ± 0.02 mg/kg). Cd was clearly accumulated by mollusks, with biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) values >1 and biota-water accumulation factor (BWAF) values >1000. Stable nitrogen isotope (δ¹⁵N) analysis showed that Cd underwent biomagnification in mollusks, but was significantly bio-diluted with increasing trophic level among other marine organisms. In general, Cd contamination levels were low in the JZB's seawater and sediment, and fish was estimated to be certainly polluted due to strict safety limitations on seafood in China. Current Cd residues mean that few aquatic species (<< 5%) would be affected by acute exposure, and ~ 10% of the species would be affected by chronic exposure. Based on target hazard quotients (THQ) and estimated weekly intakes (EWIs), urban residents around the JZB would experience higher health risks in comparison with rural residents due to higher seafood consumption rates, especially from mollusk consumption. Therefore, urban households in the area should increase their fish consumption rate and reduce that of mollusks.

Long-term study of heavy metal pollution in the northern Hangzhou Bay of China: temporal and spatial distribution, contamination evaluation, and potential ecological risk

Coastal ecosystem is vulnerable to heavy metal contamination. The northern Hangzhou Bay is under intensifying impact of anthropogenic activities. To reveal the heavy metal pollution status in the coastal environment of the Hangzhou Bay, a long-term investigation into the heavy metal contamination during 2011 to 2016 was initiated. Seawater and sediment samples of 25 locations depending on the sewage outlet locations in the northern Hangzhou Bay were collected to analyze the concentrations and temporal and spatial distribution of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As. Pollution condition, ecological risk, and potential sources were additionally analyzed. Results show that the annual mean concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As were 2.13-4.59, 0.212-1.480, 7.81-20.34, 0.054-0.279, 0.026-0.090, and 1.08-2.57 μg/L in the seawater, and were 16.34-28.35, 16.25-26.33, 67.32-97.61, 0.084-0.185, 0.029-0.061, and 6.09-14.08 μg/L in the sediments. A decreasing trend in Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Hg concentrations and an increasing trend in As of the seawater were observed. However, in the sediment, the heavy metals demonstrated a rising trend, except for Hg. The single-factor pollution index showed an increasing trend in Cd and As in the seawater, depicting an enhanced pollution of Cd and As, while in the sediments, Cu, Pb, and As were in pollution-free level (average Geo-accumulation index (I_geo) values below 0) in general, and only occasional slight pollution occurred in individual years, e.g., As with 0.403 in 2016. The mean I_geo values of Cd ranged from - 0.865 to 0.274 during 2011 to 2016, indicating that the pollution level of Cd was slight, but is likely to increase in the forthcoming years. The level of heavy metal contamination in sediments was low in 2011 (5.853) and 2012 (5.172), and moderate during 2013 to 2016 (in the range of 6.107 to 7.598), while the degree of potential ecological risk was low in the study period, except moderate in 2013 (125.107). The highest contamination degree and potential ecological risk appeared in 2013 (Cd = 7.598; RI = 125.107), while Cd and Hg contributed over 75% of the ecological risk. Overall, the results show low pollution level and low potential ecological risk in the northern Hangzhou Bay; however, more attention should be paid to the potential ecological risk due to Hg and Cd. Transgenerational Effects of Hexavalent Chromium on Marine Medaka (Oryzias melastigma) Reveal Complex Transgenerational Adaptation in Offspring

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] pollution is one of most serious heavy metal pollutants in the coastal area and posed serious threats to marine organisms and human beings. Many studies have been conducted on its toxicological effects on living organisms from morphological to physiological aspects. However, there are few studies about the transgenerational toxicological of Cr(VI). In this study, we exposed adult marine medaka fishes with Cr(VI) and their offspring with Cr(VI) to examine transgenerational effects of Cr(VI). We found that there were mechanisms such as changing reproduction modes in males to compensate for impacts on the reproduction. There were differences and similarities between the parental effect and the environmental effect, with the former one causing more serious adverse effects on the offspring of Cr(VI)-exposed fish. It was noteworthy that there was an interaction between the parental and offspring treatment which leads to the attenuation of the parental effects on offspring when the offspring also underwent the same treatment. In addition, physiological adaptation has also been observed in fish to improve their fitness. Overall, effects of Cr(VI) on fish and their offspring were studied to pave a way to study the of mechanisms of adaptation.

Global characterization of dose-dependent effects of cadmium in clam Ruditapes philippinarum

Cadmium (Cd) is being frequently detected in marine organisms. However, dose-dependent effects of Cd challenged unraveling the toxicological mechanisms of Cd to marine organisms and developing biomarkers. Here, the dose-dependent effects of Cd on clams Ruditapes philippinarum following exposure to 5 doses of Cd (3, 9, 27, 81, 243 μg/L) were investigated using benchmark dose (BMD) method. By model fitting, calculation of BMD values was performed on transcriptomic profiles, metals concentrations, and antioxidant indices. Cd exposure induced not only significant Cd accumulation in clams, but also marked alterations of essential metals such as Ca, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe. Gene regulation posed little influence on essential metal homeostasis, indicated by poor enrichment of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with metal binding and metal transport in lower concentrations of Cd-treated groups. BMD analysis on biological processes and pathways showed that peptide cross-linking was the most sensitive biological process to Cd exposure, followed by focal adhesion, ubiquitin mediated proteolysis, and apoptosis. Occurrence of apoptosis was also confirmed by TUENL-positive staining in gills and hepatopancreas of clams treated with Cd. Furthermore, many DEGs, such as transglutaminases (TGs), metallothionein (MT), STEAP2-like and laccase, which presented linear or monotonic curves and relatively low BMD values, were potentially preferable biomarkers in clams to Cd. Overall, BMD analysis on transcriptomic profiles, metals concentrations and biochemical endpoints unraveled the sensitiveness of key events in response to Cd treatments, which provided new insights in exploring the toxicological mechanisms of Cd in clams as well as biomarker selection.

Distribution and ecological- and health-risk assessment of heavy metals in the seawater of the southeast coast of India

The objective of the present study was to conduct an ecological and health risk assessment of heavy metals in the seawater of the southeast coast of India. The distribution profile of heavy metals in the surface seawater was Fe (79.60 ± 21.57 μg/L) > Zn (9.31 ± 1.33 μg/L) > Cu (5.19 ± 2.00 μg/L) > Ni (2.45 ± 0.76 μg/L) > Mn (1.20 ± 1.00 μg/L) > U (0.44 ± 0.23 μg/L) > Pb (0.36 ± 0.06 μg/L) > Cr (0.31 ± 0.57 μg/L) > Cd (0.11 ± 0.05 μg/L) > Co (0.07 ± 0.20 μg/L). Cu level for most of the samples exceeded the USEPA criteria for acute CMC (criterion maximum concentration) and chronic CCC (criterion continuous concentration). Other studied metals, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni, remained below the acute CMC and chronic CCC guidelines. The seawater pollution index (I_wp) of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Pb complied with the category-I seawater (<1, unpolluted). The ERI values (0.46-3.99) of the seawater of the studied coast mostly fell under the ecologically low risk category with respect to heavy metals. Dermal Hazard index values were orders of magnitude lower than one, indicating no potential health concern due to dermal exposure.

The acute toxic effects of hexavalent chromium on the liver of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma)

Chromium is toxic to marine animals and can cause damage to many of their organs, including the liver. To test the toxicity of chromium on marine organisms, we exposed the liver of the marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Our results show that Cr enrichment in the liver demonstrates a positive correlation to the exposure concentration. With the increase of Cr(VI) concentration, pathological changes including nuclear migration, cell vacuolization, blurred intercellular gap, nuclear condensation, become noticeable. To further study changes in gene expression in the liver after Cr(VI) exposure, we used RNA-seq to compare expression profiles before and after Cr(VI) exposure. After acute Cr(VI) exposure (2.61 mg/l) for 96 h, 5862 transcripts significantly changed. It is the first time that the PPAR pathway was found to respond sensitively to Cr(VI) exposure in fish. Finally, combined with other published study, we found that there may be some difference between Cr(VI) toxicity in seawater fish and freshwater fish, due to degree of oxidative stress, distribution patterns and detailed Cr(VI) toxicological mechanisms. Not only does our study explore the mechanisms of Cr(VI) toxicity on the livers of marine medaka, it also points out different Cr(VI) toxicity levels and potential mechanisms between seawater fish and freshwater fish.

The excessive enrichment of trace elements in migratory and breeding red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in China

The excessive enrichment of trace elements, such as Pb and Cd, from food may contribute to the decline of migratory red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in China. To test this prediction, we determined the concentrations of Pb and Cd, as well as further macro and trace elements (Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn) in the target species and their prey (sediment, reed root, mollusk, arthropods, and common fish species) in both the wintering (Yancheng wetland) and breeding sites (Zhalong wetland) of cranes in China. The maximum concentrations of Pb (130 mg kg^-1 dry weight (dw)) and Cd (10.60 mg kg^-1 dw) in the sediments of breeding site and the maximum concentration of Cd (4.50 mg kg^-1 dw) in the sediments of wintering site exceeded the probable effect level values (91.30 mg kg^-1 for Pb and 3.53 mg kg^-1for Cd), suggesting the potential exposure risk of the examined species. Indeed, Pb and Cd contents of essential foods, i.e., aquatic animals, sampled in two sites were above the limit of allowable concentration recommended by the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization food standards program. Approximately 80, 31.4, and 60.3 mg kg^-1 dw of Pb were detected in the eggshells, liver, and kidney, respectively, of the target species, and the values are above the levels of concern (1.7 mg kg^-1 for eggshell and 30 mg kg^-1 for liver and kidney) in common birds. Nevertheless, the increased Pb and Cd levels in the prey and bodies of the red-crowned cranes did not induce the levels of Ca and Mg depletion. Average contents of the macronutrients, Ca (1.38 g kg^-1 dw) and Mg (1.32 g kg^-1 dw), in the liver of the examined species exceeded the background concentrations (0.2-0.4 g kg^-1 for Ca and 0.4-0.8 g kg^-1 for Mg) in the liver of birds. Consumption of Ca-rich foods, e.g., grits and exoskeleton species, may aid in compensating the possible loss caused by the increased Pb and Cd concentrations in the bodies of the cranes.

Transcriptomic, Biochemical, and Histopathological Responses of the Clam Ruditapes decussatus from a Metal-Contaminated Tunis Lagoon

This study was designed to investigate the molecular (transcriptional expression), biochemical (oxidative stress and neurotoxicity), and histopathological effects of metal contamination in the gill of clams (Ruditapes decussatus) sampled from the Tunis lagoon. The concentrations of five heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, and Zn) in surface sediments and their accumulation in soft tissues of R. decussatus were evaluated in three sites (Z1, Z2, and Z3). A metal contamination state of Tunis lagoon sediments was noted with spatial variations with relatively high levels at Z2. Biomarker analyses showed an increase in glutathione S-transferase and catalase activities and lipid peroxidation levels and a decrease in acetylcholinesterase activity in the studied sites. Molecular investigation showed a significant overexpression of: cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, ribosomal RNA 16S, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, heat shock protein 70, and metallothioneins in the three sampling sites. Moreover, our data were correlated to severe and diverse histopathological alterations in the clam gills. The principal component analysis showed that the Z2 region is more affected by metal contamination than Z1 and Z3 regions. Current field results suggest the use of several combined biomarkers at different cell levels instead of individual ones in monitoring programs.

Ferrate(VI)-prompted removal of metals in aqueous media: mechanistic delineation of enhanced efficiency via metal entrenchment in magnetic oxides

The removal efficiency of heavy metal ions (cadmium(II), Cd(II); cobalt(II), Co(II); nickel(II), Ni(II); copper(II), Cu(II)) by potassium ferrate(VI) (K2FeO4, Fe(VI)) was studied as a function of added amount of Fe(VI) (or Fe) and varying pH. At pH = 6.6, the effective removal of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) from water was observed at a low Fe-to-heavy metal ion ratio (Fe/M(II) = 2:1) while a removal efficiency of 70% was seen for Cd(II) ions at a high Fe/Cd(II) weight ratio of 15:1. The role of ionic radius and metal valence state was explored by conducting similar removal experiments using Al(III) ions. The unique combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in-field Mössbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements enabled the delineation of several distinct mechanisms for the Fe(VI)-prompted removal of metal ions. Under a Fe/M weight ratio of 5:1, Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) were removed by the formation of MFe2O4 spinel phase and partially through their structural incorporation into octahedral positions of γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) nanoparticles. In comparison, smaller sized Al(III) ions got incorporated easily into the tetrahedral positions of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. In contrast, Cd(II) ions either did not form the spinel ferrite structure or were not incorporated into the lattic of iron(III) oxide phase due to the distinct electronic structure and ionic radius. Environmentally friendly removal of heavy metal ions at a much smaller dosage of Fe than those of commonly applied iron-containing coagulants and the formation of ferrimagnetic species preventing metal ions leaching back into the environment and allowing their magnetic separation are highlighted.

Monitoring of non-destructive sampling strategies to assess the exposure of avian species in Jiangsu Province, China to heavy metals

To assess the exposure of avian species in Jiangsu Province, China to eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn), the flight feathers, eggshells and feces of total ten avian species (including four herons, four cranes, one stork and one gull) were collected during March to May in 2012. The total concentrations of As, Cd and Hg were measured by Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometer; Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. The determined concentrations of Cr (3.94, 1.33-8.30 mg kg(-1)), Cu (15.02, 7.34-35.53 mg kg(-1)) and Zn (134.66, 77.26-242.25 mg kg(-1)) in fresh feathers and Cd (7.93, 7.44-9.12 mg kg(-1)), Ni (22.74, 19.38-24.71 mg kg(-1)), Pb (85.06, 78.72-91.95 mg kg(-1)) and Zn (63.54, 55.82-72.14 mg kg(-1)) in eggshells were higher than the mean values of other reported data, indicating a considerable heavy metal pollution status in local area. Comparing to the heavy metal levels in early historic feathers (1992-2000), a significant elevation of concentrations has been observed in recent bird feathers. For feathers of Grus japonensis, the heavy metal concentrations increased by 19-267%. This increased tendency was consistent with local GDP (Gross Domestic Products) development. The anthropogenic economic activity especially industrial development may be a critical reason that caused the increase of heavy metal levels in local avian species.
