Abstract
BACKGROUND We assessed the possible effect of usual dairy consumption on pre-diabetes (Pre-DM) remission or progression to type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS Pre-DM adults (n = 334, mean age of 49.4 years, and 51.5% men) were assessed for dairy intakes (2006-2008) and followed up to 9 years for incidence of T2D or normal glycemia (NG). All biochemical measurements were done at baseline and all subsequent examinations with 3-y follow-up intervals. Multinomial regression models with adjustment of confounding variables were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident T2D and NG for each serving/d dairy consumption. RESULTS The odds of NG was significantly elevated by 69% (OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.00-2.86, P = 0.05) per 200 g/d increased high-fat dairy intake, while the amount of total dairy or low-fat dairy was not related to the outcomes. Higher intakes of yogurt were more likely to be associated with an increased odds of NG (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.20-2.74, P = 0.01). Usual intakes of milk, cheese, or cream-butter were not associated to Pre-DM remission or progression to T2D. CONCLUSION Regular dairy consumption may increase the chance of Pre-DM regression to NG.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Hypertension and type-2 diabetes are strong risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, and their management requires lifestyle changes, including a shift in dietary habits. The consumption of salt has increased in the last decades in some countries, but its association with type-2 diabetes remains unknown. Thus, we aimed to estimate the amount of salt intake among adults with and without diabetes and to assess whether concomitant hypertension and diabetes are associated with higher salt intake. Methods: Data from 11,982 adults 35-74 years of age enrolled in the baseline of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health-Brasil study (2008-2010) were studied. A clinical and anthropometric evaluation was performed, and their daily salt intake was estimated by the overnight 12-hr urine sodium excretion. Results: Salt intake (gram per day) was higher in participants with diabetes as compared with those without diabetes, regardless of sex (men: 14.2 ± 6.4 vs. 12.4 ± 5.6, P < 0.05; women: 10.5 ± 4.8 vs. 9.1 ± 4.1, P < 0.05). However, salt intake is high in participants with fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL or HbA1c ≥6.5%, but not in participants with blood glucose 2 hr after the glucose tolerance test ≥200 mg/dL. When hypertension and diabetes coexisted, salt consumption was higher than among people without these conditions. The prevalence of hypertension increased with increasing salt intake in women with diabetes, but not in men with this condition. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the high consumption of salt in individuals with diabetes and/or hypertension, and the need for effective strategies to reduce salt consumption in these groups of increased risk for major cardiovascular events, especially in women.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of T2DM is escalating in Thailand affecting over 10% of adults aged 20-79 years old. It is imperative to identify modifiable risk factors that can potentially help mitigate the risk of developing diabetes. Objective This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary habits and type 2 diabetes in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Methods This case-control study involved 300 individuals aged 25-74 years residing in Chiang Mai, Thailand including 150 newly diagnosed T2DM patients (cases) and 150 community residents without diabetes (controls). Dietary habits were assessed based on Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Socio-demographic characteristics and anthropometric information of the participants were collected. Data analysis was performed using the STATA-17. Results The case group participants were older and had a higher proportion of males compared to the control group. The case group exhibited a significantly higher consumption of meat, beans, nuts, soft drinks, and topping seasonings (p<0.001), conversely, a lower intake of vegetables (p<0.001), fruits (p=0.006), fish, rice (p<0.001), eggs (p=0.032), milk products, coffee, and tea (p<0.001) compared to the control group. Furthermore, the case group demonstrated a higher level of certain dietary practices such as a greater frequency of having meals with family, not removing visible fat from food (p<0.001), and eating snacks between meals compared to controls. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting for potential confounding factors not removing visible fat from food (aOR 5.61, 95% CI: 2.29-13.7, p<0.001) and using topping seasonings (aOR 3.52 95% CI: 1.69-7.32 p=0.001) were significantly associated with the risk of T2DM, whereas daily vegetable intake (aOR 0.32 95% CI: 0.15-0.68 p=0.003) was inversely associated with T2DM. Conclusion The study findings caution against the consumption of food rich in fat and using salty seasonings, while advocating for an increased intake of vegetables to prevent the prevalence of T2DM.

Abstract
Prediabetes presents a high-risk state for the development of various diseases and is reversible by adhering to a healthy lifestyle. We conducted this analysis to explore the associations of the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and the Alternate Mediterranean Diet Index (aMed index) with the risk of prediabetes. The data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, including 20,844 participants. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) of prediabetes and 95% confidence intervals (CI) by tertile of diet quality scores were estimated using a weighted logistic regression. Compared to those in the lowest tertile, the multivariable-adjusted OR of prediabetes for the highest tertile was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.94; p for trend = 0.005) for HEI-2015 and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.98; p for trend = 0.02) for the aMed index. After mutual adjustment, the association for HEI-2015 (p for trend = 0.03) but not for the aMed index (p for trend = 0.59) remained significant. Among the component food groups and nutrients, higher intakes of red and processed meat, sodium, and total saturated fatty acids were associated with a higher risk of prediabetes, while moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a lower risk. In conclusion, adherence to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, as compared with the Mediterranean Diet, appeared to be more strongly associated with a lower risk of prediabetes among adults in the United States.

Abstract
The rise in diabetes cases is a growing concern due to the aging of populations. This not only places a strain on healthcare systems but also creates serious public health problems. Traditional blood tests are currently used to check blood sugar levels, but they are invasive and can discourage patients from regularly monitoring their levels. We recently developed nano-sensing probes that integrate Au microelectrodes and conductivity meters, requiring only 50 μL of saliva for measurement. The usage of the co-planar design of coating-free Au electrodes makes the measurement more stable, precise, and easier. This study found a positive correlation between the participant's fasting blood sugar levels and salivary conductivity. We observed a diabetes prevalence of 11.6% among 395 adults under 65 years in this study, using the glycated hemoglobin > 6.5% definition. This study found significantly higher salivary conductivity in the diabetes group, and also a clear trend of increasing diabetes as conductivity levels rose. The prediction model, using salivary conductivity, age, and body mass index, performed well in diagnosing diabetes, with a ROC curve area of 0.75. The study participants were further divided into low and high groups based on salivary conductivity using the Youden index with a cutoff value of 5.987 ms/cm. Individuals with higher salivary conductivity had a 3.82 times greater risk of diabetes than those with lower levels, as determined by the odds ratio calculation. In conclusion, this portable sensing device for salivary conductivity has the potential to be a screening tool for detecting diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary sodium intake is a crucial lifestyle factor that should be assessed in adult cancer survivors due to their increased risk of adverse health outcomes compared to the general population. However, its with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in adult cancer survivors remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association of dietary sodium intake categorized by the American Heart Association (AHA) recommendation with IFG in the community-dwelling adult cancer survivors. METHODS A total of 1,052 adult cancer survivors without diabetes were identified from the sixth and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2013-2018. Data on dietary sodium intake was categorized as <1,500 mg/day, 1,500-2,999 mg/day, 2,300-3,999 mg/day, and ≥4,000 mg/day according to the AHA recommendation. A multiple logistic regression model adjusted for demographic, lifestyle, and health status was used to compute odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for IFG according to dietary sodium intake categories. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables identified in the KNHANES, the adjusted OR among the adult cancer survivors who consumed 1,500-2,999 mg/day, 2,300-3,999 mg/day, and ≥4,000 mg/day of dietary sodium were 1.16 (95% CI: 0.25-5.27), 1.93 (95% CI: 0.40-9.37), and 2.67 (95% CI: 0.59-12.18), respectively, as compared to those who consumed <1,500 mg/day (P value for trend = 0.036). CONCLUSION Among community-dwelling adult cancer survivors, high dietary sodium intake was marginally associated with increased odds of IFG. Well-designed cohort studies or randomized clinical trials are needed to establish more epidemiologic evidence on this association in adult cancer survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SUSPPUP, calculated as serum sodium [Na+] to urinary Na+ divided by (serum potassium [K+]) 2 to urinary K+, is a composite electrolyte index that reflects renal Na+ retention and K+ excretion. It remains unclear whether SUSPPUP and its components including serum or urinary Na+ or K+, are associated with glucose metabolism. This study aimed to address their associations. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study enrolling 5,581 Chinese adults (1,269 with prediabetes, 1,044 with diabetes, and 3,268 with normoglycemia). Fasting serum and morning spot urine were used to measure electrolytes that included Na+ and K+. RESULTS SUSPPUP was higher in prediabetes and diabetes than normoglycemia. The odds of prediabetes and diabetes were increased by 21% and 39% for every 1-standard deviation increment of SUSPPUP after multivariable-adjustment. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that SUSPPUP correlated positively with fasting plasma glucose, 2 h plasma glucose after OGTT, and glycated hemoglobin A1c. Higher spot urinary Na+ was associated with lower odds of prediabetes and diabetes, while spot urinary K+ showed the opposite. CONCLUSION Increases in Na+ retention and K+ excretion in the kidney, as reflected by an elevated SUSPPUP, are associated with increased prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes in Chinese community-dwellers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Primary aldosteronism is associated with impaired glucose tolerance. Whether plasma aldosterone and/or renin concentrations are associated with type 2 diabetes and continuous measures of glucose metabolism in the general population is still under debate. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The analyses included 2931 participants of the KORA F4 study at baseline and 2010 participants of the KORA FF4 study after a median follow-up of 6.5 years. The associations of active plasma renin and aldosterone concentrations with type 2 diabetes and continuous measures of glucose metabolism were assessed using logistic and linear regression models. Results were adjusted for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), estimated glomerular filtration rate, potassium, use of ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, beta blockers, diuretics and calcium channel blockers. RESULTS Cross-sectionally, renin was associated with type 2 diabetes (OR per SD: 1.25, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.43, p<0.001), fasting glucose, 2-hour glucose, insulin, proinsulin, HOMA-B (homeostasis model assessment of beta cell function) and HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance) (all p values <0.001). Aldosterone was not associated with type 2 diabetes (OR: 1.04, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.19; p=0.547) but with insulin, proinsulin and HOMA-IR (all p values <0.001). The aldosterone-renin ratio was inversely associated with type 2 diabetes and several measures of glucose metabolism. Longitudinally, neither renin (OR: 1.12, 95% CI 0.92 to 1.36) nor aldosterone (OR: 0.91, 95% CI 0.74 to 1.11) were associated with incident type 2 diabetes. Renin was inversely associated with changes of insulin concentrations. CONCLUSIONS In the KORA F4/FF4 study, renin and aldosterone were not associated with incident type 2 diabetes and largely unrelated to changes of measures of glucose metabolism. Cross-sectionally, aldosterone was associated with surrogate parameters of insulin resistance. However, these associations were not independent of renin.

Abstract
(1) Background: Recent individual studies have demonstrated that consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) may be related to type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to synthesize the results from these individual studies by conducting an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies evaluating the association between UPF consumption and the risk of T2DM. (2) Methods: A systematic search was conducted using ISI Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus electronic databases from inception up to August 2021. Data were extracted from five studies (one cross-sectional study and four cohort studies, totaling 230,526 adults from four different countries). Risk ratios (RR) of pooled results were estimated using a random-effects model. (3) Results: Our results revealed that higher UPF consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM (RR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.36, 2.22; I2 = 68.9%; p < 0.001; n = 5). Linear dose-response analysis indicated that each 10% increase in UPF consumption (kcal/d) was associated with a 15% higher risk of T2DM (RR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.26; I2 = 86.0%; p < 0.001; n = 5) among adults. Non-linear dose-response analysis demonstrated a positive linear association between UPF consumption and T2DM (pnonlinearity = 0.13, pdose-response < 0.001; n = 5) among adults. (4) Conclusions: A higher intake of UPF was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM. However, underlying mechanisms remain unknown and future experimental studies are warranted.

Abstract
In Myanmar, the escalating prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and impaired glucose tolerance among adults was recently reported, with the highest prevalence in the Yangon Region. The aim of the present study was to identify the risk factors in dietary habits and their relationship with T2DM in urban Myanmar residents. We conducted a case–control study recruiting 300 individuals aged 25–74 years living in the Yangon Region, consisting of 150 newly diagnosed cases attending a diabetes clinic, and 150 controls, who were community residents and free of diabetes. The case group had a significantly higher consumption of noodles, fish, beans, fermented food and pickles, dried food, topping seasonings, and non-dairy milk products than the control group, whereas they had a lower vegetable intake (more than three servings/day) and fruit intake (more than three servings/day) than the control group. Furthermore, the case group exhibited a higher frequency of some dietary behaviors than the control group, such as (1) having meals with family, (2) skipping breakfast, and (3) eating out. The final model showed that topping seasonings (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 11.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.08–40.90), more than three servings/day of vegetable intake (aOR 0.18, 95% CI 0.05–0.67), and having meals with family (aOR 2.23, 95% CI 1.05–4.71) were associated with diabetes. The study suggests that Myanmar’s characteristic dietary culture of topping their meals with salty seasonings and sauces and eating multiple dishes together as a family are risk factors associated with T2DM. Our findings may contribute recommendations and opportunities for the primary prevention of T2DM in urban Myanmar.
