Aptamer-superparamagnetic nanoparticles capture coupling siderophore-Fe3+ scavenging actuated with carbon dots to confer an "off-on" mechanism for the ultrasensitive detection of Helicobacter pylori

Carbon dots-based fluorescent probe for detection of foodborne pathogens and its potential with microfluidics

Concern about food safety triggers demand on rapid, accurate and on-site detection of foodborne pathogens. Among various fluorescent probes for detection, carbon dots (CDs) prepared by carbonization of carbon-rich raw materials show extraordinary performance for their excellent and tailorable photoluminescence property, as well as their facilely gained specificity by surface customization and modification. CDs-based fluorescent probes play a crucial role in many pathogenic bacteria sensing systems. In addition, microfluidic technology with characteristics of portability and functional integration is expected to combine with CDs-based fluorescent probes for point-of-care testing (POCT), which can further enhance the detection property of CDs-based fluorescent probes. Here, this paper reviews CDs-based bacterial detection methods and systems, including the structural modulation of fluorescent probes and pathogenic bacteria detection mechanisms, and describes the potential of combining CDs with microfluidic technology, providing reference for the development of novel rapid detection technology for pathogenic bacteria in food.

Fluorescent biosensor based on magnetic separation platform and spore-like breakable organosilica nanocapsules controlled-release carbon dots for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7

Ultrasensitive and rapid detection of low concentration of Escherichia coli O157: H7 (E. coli O157:H7) in food is essential for food safety and public health. In this study, A novel fluorescence signal amplification biosensor based on magnetic separation platform and red fluorescent carbon dots (R-CDs)-encapsulated breakable organosilica nanocapsules (BONs) for ultrasensitive detection of E. coli O157:H7 was established. Wulff-type boronic acid functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs@B-N/APBA) with broad-spectrum bacterial recognition ability were synthesized for the first time to recognize and capture E. coli O157: H7 in food samples. R-CDs@BONs labeled with anti-E. coli O157:H7 monoclonal antibody (mAb@R-CDs@BONs-NH2) were used as the second recognition element to ensure the specificity for E. coli O157:H7 and form MNPs@B-N/APBA∼ E. coli O157:H7∼mAb@R-CDs@BONs-NH2 sandwich complexes, followed by releasing R-CDs to generate amplified fluorescence response signals for quantitative detection of E. coli O157:H7. The proposed method had a limit of detection with 25 CFU/mL in pure culture and contaminated lettuce samples, which the whole detection process took about 120 min. This fluorescence signal amplification biosensor has the potential to detect other pathogens in food by altering specific antibodies.

A novel dual-recognition fluorescent biosensor for sialyl-Lewisx sensitive detection

Sialyl-Lewisx (SLex) is a tetrasugar, which plays an important role in initial inflammation and cancer cell metastasis, and can be used as a marker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis or a therapeutic target. Detecting SLex from complex biological media remains a significant challenge. Herein, a single-stranded DNA aptamer of SLex was screened based on the double-stranded DNA library-modified magnetic bead (MB)-SELEX technology. After 14 rounds of screening, 12,639 sequences were obtained and divided into nine families. Three representative sequences were selected based on the number of sequence repeats and Gibbs binding free energy, and the aptamer SLex-Apt2 with 80 nt length (Kd = 23.01 nM) had the best affinity and relatively high specificity for targeting SLex. Then, a novel dual-recognition fluorescent biosensor for SLex-sensitive detection based on aptamer SLex-Apt2 bio-dots and 3-aminobenzoboric acid-modified MB was developed. This method can detect SLex as low as 32 μM and has a good linear response in the range 100 μM to 2 mM. It has the advantages of low preparation cost, good targeting, and avoiding the occurrence of false-positive and false-negative detection results, which makes the biosensor more valuable in biological detection and clinical diagnosis.

Dual-Targeted Graphitic Cascade Nanozymes for Recognition and Treatment of Helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the major etiological factor of a variety of gastric diseases. However, the treatment of H. pylori is challenged by the destruction of targeted drugs by gastric acid and pepsin. Herein, a dual-targeted cascade catalytic nanozyme PtCo@Graphene@Hemin-2(L-arginine) (PtCo@G@H2A) is designed for the treatment of H. pylori. The dual-targeting ability of PtCo@G@H2A is derived from directly targeting the receptor protein of H. pylori through hemin and responding to the acidic environment to cause charge reversal (protonation of L-arginine) to capture H. pylori, achieving efficient targeting effect. Compared with the single-targeting strategy relying on hemin, the dual-targeting strategy can greatly improve the targeting rate, achieving an increase of 850% targeting rate. At the concentration of NaHCO3 in intestinal fluid, the surface potential of PtCo@G@H2A can be quickly restored to avoid side effects. Meanwhile, PtCo@G@H2A has pH-responsive oxidase-like activity, which can generate nitric oxide (NO) through a cascade catalytic process that first generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) with oxygen, and further oxidizes L-arginine through ROS, realizing a superior acid-selective bactericidal effect. Overall, it proposes a promising strategy for the treatment of H. pylori that maintains high targeting and therapeutic effects in the environment of gastric acid and pepsin.

Aptamer-Magnetic Nanoparticle Complexes for Powerful Biosensing: A Comprehensive Review

The selective and sensitive diagnosis of diseases is a significant matter in the early stages of the cure of illnesses. To elaborate, although several types of probes have been broadly applied in clinics, magnetic nanomaterials-aptamers, as new-generation probes, are becoming more and more attractive. The presence of magnetic nanomaterials brings about quantification, purification, and quantitative analysis of biomedical, especially in complex samples. Elaborately, the superparamagnetic properties and numerous functionalized groups of magnetic nanomaterials are considered two main matters for providing separation ability and immobilization substrate, respectively. In addition, the selectivity and stability of aptamer can present a high potential recognition element. Importantly, the integration of aptamer and magnetic nanomaterials benefits can boost the performance of biosensors for biomedical analysis by introducing efficient and compact probes that need low patient samples and fast diagnosis, user-friendly application, and high repeatability in the quantification of biomolecules. The primary aim of this review is to suggest a summary of the effect of the employed other types of nanomaterials in the fabrication of novel aptasensors-based magnetic nanomaterials and to carefully explore various applications of these probes in the quantification of bioagents. Furthermore, the application of these versatile and high-potential probes in terms of the detection of cancer cells and biomarkers, proteins, drugs, bacteria, and nucleoside were discussed. Besides, research gaps and restrictions in the field of biomedical analysis by magnetic nanomaterials-aptamers will be discussed.

A biosensor encompassing fusarinine C-magnetic nanoparticles and aptamer-red/green carbon dots for dual-channel fluorescent and RGB discrimination of Campylobacter and Aliarcobacter

The diarrhea pathogens Campylobacter and Aliarcobacter are similar in morphology and their leading symptoms, making them difficult to be differentially diagnosed. Herein, we report a biosensor with two modules to differentiate the genera-representative species of C. jejuni and A. butzleri. Module 1 was fusarinine C-decorated magnetic nanoparticles; module 2 consisted of C. jejuni-specific aptamer modified with red-emitting carbon dots (CDs) and A. butzleri-specific aptamer-modified green-emitting CDs, consisting non-interfering dual-fluorescence detection channels. Module 1 was used to selectively capture C. jejuni and A. butzleri from an un-cultured sample, and the specific CDs in module 2 would then recognize and bind to their counterpart bacteria when subjected to the collected module 1-bacteria complex. By measuring the fluorescence intensities from the CDs-bound bacteria, the abundance of each bacterium could be differentially indicated. This biosensor exhibited a wide detection range of up to 1 × 107 CFU/mL and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) of 1 CFU/mL, for each bacterium. Thus, the biosensor with dual-fluorescent channels facilitated a culture-independent, ultrasensitive and discriminative detection of C. jejuni and A. butzleri. Remarkably, this fluorescent detection could be transformed into RGB color indication to render the visual discrimination. After the biosensor was coupled with microfluidics, a biosensing platform was developed, which could render fluorescent and RGB differentiation of the two bacteria in human stool or chicken broilers, achieving a LOD of 5 CFU/mL and turnaround time of 65 min. This work established the first biosensor-based methodology for the discriminative detection of Campylobacter and Aliarcobacter in real samples.

Future Nanotechnology-Based Strategies for Improved Management of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a recalcitrant pathogen, which can cause gastric disorders. During the past decades, polypharmacy-based regimens, such as triple and quadruple therapies have been widely used against H. pylori. However, polyantibiotic therapies can disturb the host gastric/gut microbiota and lead to antibiotic resistance. Thus, simpler but more effective approaches should be developed. Here, some recent advances in nanostructured drug delivery systems to treat H. pylori infection are summarized. Also, for the first time, a drug release paradigm is proposed to prevent H. pylori antibiotic resistance along with an IVIVC model in order to connect the drug release profile with a reduction in bacterial colony counts. Then, local delivery systems including mucoadhesive, mucopenetrating, and cytoadhesive nanobiomaterials are discussed in the battle against H. pylori infection. Afterward, engineered delivery platforms including polymer-coated nanoemulsions and polymer-coated nanoliposomes are poposed. These bioinspired platforms can contain an antimicrobial agent enclosed within smart multifunctional nanoformulations. These bioplatforms can prevent the development of antibiotic resistance, as well as specifically killing H. pylori with no or only slight negative effects on the host gastrointestinal microbiota. Finally, the essential checkpoints that should be passed to confirm the potential effectiveness of anti-H. pylori nanosystems are discussed.

A truncated DNA aptamer with high selectivity for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells

The estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers constitute more than 50 % of breast cancers, seriously threatening the health of women. Unfortunately, the detection and targeted therapy of ER+ breast cancers remain a challenge. Here, a novel nucleic acid aptamer S1-4 was developed to specifically target ER+ breast cancer MCF-7 cells by using Cell-SELEX and nucleic acid truncation strategies. The affinity dissociation constant of the binding of aptamer S1-4 to MCF-7 cells was 97.6 ± 7.5 nM in vitro. Compared with HER2+ breast cells SK-BR-3 and triple-negative breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 cells were selectively recognized and targeted by aptamer S1-4. Fluorescence tracing in vivo results also indicated that aptamer S1-4 selectively targeted the cell membrane of tumor tissues in MCF-7- but not in SK-BR3 or MDB-MA-231-bearing mice. This selectively developed novel aptamer probe S1-4 with high affinity could be used for the diagnosis and treatment of ER+ breast cancers.

Recent advances and perspectives of functionalized carbon dots in bacteria sensing

Bacterial infectious diseases are severe threats to human health and increase substantial financial burdens. Nanomaterials have shown great potential in timely and accurate bacterial identification, detection, and monitoring to improve the cure rate and reduce mortality. Recently, carbon dots have been evidenced to be ideal candidates for bacterial identification and detection due to their superior physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. This review outlines the detailed recognition elements and recognition strategies with functionalized carbon dots (FCDs) for bacterial identification and detection. The advantages and limitations of different kinds of FCDs-based sensors will be critically discussed. Meanwhile, the ongoing challenges and perspectives of FCDs-based sensors for bacteria sensing are put forward.

Whole-Bacterium SELEX Aptamer Selection of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Application to Colorectal Cancer Noninvasive Screening in Human Feces

In terms of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) is now the third most common malignancy. The drawbacks of current screening methods are their exorbitant costs, difficult procedures, and lengthy implementation timelines. The benefits of fecal screening for CRC are ease of operation, noninvasiveness, cost-effectiveness, and superior sensitivity. As a result of its enrichment in the malignant tissues and feces of CRC patients, Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) has emerged as a crucial biomarker for the incipient detection, identification, and prognostic prediction of CRC. Here, for the first time, the whole-bacterium SELEX method was used to screen the highly specific and affinity aptamers against F. nucleatum by 13 cycles of selection. The Apt-S-5 linear correlation equation is y = 0.7363x2.8315 (R2 = 0.9864) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 851 CFU/mL. The results of the experiment using fecal samples revealed a substantial disparity between the microorganisms in the CRC patients' feces and those in the feces of healthy individuals and were consistent with those of qPCR. The aptamers may therefore offer a crucial approach to identifying F. nucleatum and hold tremendous promise for CRC diagnosis and prognostic prediction.

Recent progress in biomarker-based diagnostics of Helicobacter pylori, gastric cancer-causing bacteria

The progression of any disease and its outcomes depend on the complicated interaction between pathogens, host and environmental factors. Thus, complete knowledge of bacterial toxins involved in pathogenesis is necessary to develop diagnostic methods and alternative therapies, including vaccines. This review summarizes recently employed biomarkers to diagnose the presence of Helicobacter pylori bacteria. The authors review distinct types of disease-associated biomarkers such as urease, DNA, miRNA, aptamers and bacteriophages that can be utilized as targets to detect Helicobacter pylori and, moreover, gastric cancer in its early stage. A detailed explanation is also given in the context of the recent utilization of these biomarkers in the development of a highly specific and sensitive biosensing platform.

The applications of functional materials-based nano-formulations in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic inflammation-related diseases

Chronic inflammation, in general, refers to systemic immune abnormalities most often caused by the environment or lifestyle, which is the basis for various skin diseases, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, digestive diseases, cancer, and so on. Therapeutic strategies have focused on immunosuppression and anti-inflammation, but conventional approaches have been poor in enhancing the substantive therapeutic effect of drugs. Nanomaterials continue to attract attention for their high flexibility, durability and simplicity of preparation, as well as high profitability. Nanotechnology is used in various areas of clinical medicine, such as medical diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. However, some related problems cannot be ignored, including various cytotoxic and worsening inflammation caused by the nanomaterials themselves. This paper provides an overview of functional nanomaterial formulations for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic inflammation-related diseases, with the intention of providing some reference for the enhancement and optimization of existing therapeutic approaches.

Antioxidant Carboxymethyl Chitosan Carbon Dots with Calcium Doping Achieve Ultra-Low Calcium Concentration for Iron-Induced Osteoporosis Treatment by Effectively Enhancing Calcium Bioavailability in Zebrafish

Iron overloads osteoporosis mainly occurs to postmenopausal women and people requiring repeated blood transfusions. Iron overload increases the activity of osteoclasts and decreases the activity of osteoblasts, leading to the occurrence of osteoporosis. Conventional treatment options include calcium supplements and iron chelators. However, simple calcium supplementation is not effective, and it does not have a good therapeutic effect. Oxidative stress is one of the triggers for osteoporosis. Therefore, the study focuses on the antioxidant aspect of osteoporosis treatment. The present work revealed that antioxidant carboxymethyl chitosan-based carbon dots (AOCDs) can effectively treat iron overload osteoporosis. More interestingly, the functional modification of AOCDs by doping calcium gluconate (AOCDs:Ca) is superior to the use of any single component. AOCDs:Ca have the dual function of antioxidant and calcium supplement. AOCDs:Ca effectively improve the bioavailability of calcium and achieve ultra-low concentration calcium supplement for the treatment of iron-induced osteoporosis in zebrafish.

Emerging Target-Directed Approaches for the Treatment and Diagnosis of Microbial Infections

With the rising levels of drug resistance, developing efficient antimicrobial therapies has become a priority. A promising strategy is the conjugation of antibiotics with relevant moieties that can potentiate their activity by target-directing. The conjugation of siderophores with antibiotics allows them to act as Trojan horses by hijacking the microorganisms' highly developed iron transport systems and using them to carry the antibiotic into the cell. Through the analysis of relevant examples of the past decade, this Perspective aims to reveal the potential of siderophore-antibiotic Trojan horses for the treatment of infections and the role of siderophores in diagnostic techniques. Other conjugated molecules will be the subject of discussion, namely those involving vitamin B12, carbohydrates, and amino acids, as well as conjugated compounds targeting protein degradation and β-lactamase activated prodrugs.

Advanced Sensing Strategies Based on Different Types of Biomarkers toward Early Diagnosis of H. pylori

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium that can colonize human gastric epithelial cells and cause H. pylori infection, closely related to many gastric diseases. Compared with conventional H. pylori detection methods, emerging diagnostic approaches (such as biosensors) have become potentially more effective alternatives due to their high sensitivity, good selectivity and noninvasiveness. This review begins with a brief overview of H. pylori infection, the processes that lead to diseases, and current diagnostic methods. Subsequently, advanced biosensors in different target-based for diagnosing H. pylori infection are focused, including the detection of H. pylori-related nucleic acid, H. pylori-related protein (such as the cytotoxin, urease), and intact H. pylori. In addition, prospects for the development of H. pylori detection methods are also discussed in the end.

Biosensors for point-of-care testing and personalized monitoring of gastrointestinal microbiota

The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota is essential in maintaining human health. Alteration of the GI microbiota or gut microbiota (GM) from homeostasis (i.e., dysbiosis) is associated with several communicable and non-communicable diseases. Thus, it is crucial to constantly monitor the GM composition and host-microbe interactions in the GI tract since they could provide vital health information and indicate possible predispositions to various diseases. Pathogens in the GI tract must be detected early to prevent dysbiosis and related diseases. Similarly, the consumed beneficial microbial strains (i.e., probiotics) also require real-time monitoring to quantify the actual number of their colony-forming units within the GI tract. Unfortunately, due to the inherent limitations associated with the conventional methods, routine monitoring of one's GM health is not attainable till date. In this context, miniaturized diagnostic devices such as biosensors could provide alternative and rapid detection methods by offering robust, affordable, portable, convenient, and reliable technology. Though biosensors for GM are still at a relatively preliminary stage, they can potentially transform clinical diagnosis in the near future. In this mini-review, we have discussed the significance and recent advancements of biosensors in monitoring GM. Finally, the progresses on future biosensing techniques such as lab-on-chip, smart materials, ingestible capsules, wearable devices, and fusion of machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) have also been highlighted.

Branched poly(ethylenimine) carbon dots-MnO2 nanosheets based fluorescent sensory system for sensing of malachite green in fish samples

Malachite green (MG) is an organic dye compound that is frequently used as a fungicide and antiseptic in aquaculture. However, human or animal exposure to MG causes carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects. Herein, a novel fluorescent assay was designed for the detection of MG using manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO₂ NS) as an energy acceptor to quench the fluorescence of branched poly(ethylenimine) carbon dots (BPEI-CDs) via Förster resonance energy transfer. When butyrylcholinesterase is introduced to form thiocholine in the presence of S-butyrylthiocholine iodide, MnO₂ NS can be recovered by thiocholine to Mn²⁺, resulting in restoration of the fluorescence of BPEI-CDs. Exploiting these changes in fluorescence intensity in the above system, a fluorescence probe was successfully developed for the quantitative detection of MG. Besides, this assay was applied to fish samples, verifying the high potential for practical application of the proposed sensor for the monitoring of MG in aquatic products.

Intrinsic specificity of plain ammonium citrate carbon dots for Helicobacter pylori: Interfacial mechanism, diagnostic translation and general revelation

The exploitation of carbon dots (CDs) is now flourishing; however, more effort is needed to overcome their lack of intrinsic specificity. Herein, instead of synthesizing novel CDs, we reinvestigated three reported CDs and discovered that plain ammonium citrate CDs (AC-CDs) exhibited surprising specificity for Helicobacter pylori. Notably, we showed that the interfacial mechanism behind this specificity was due to the affinity between the high abundant urea/ammonium transporters on H. pylori outer membrane and the surface-coordinated ammonium ions on AC-CDs. Further, we justified that ammonium sulfate-citric acid CDs also possessed H. pylori-specificity owing to their NH₄⁺ doping. Thereby, we suggested that the incorporation of a molecule that could be actively transported by abundant membrane receptors into the precursors of CDs might serve as a basis for developing a plain CD with intrinsic specificity for H. pylori. Moreover, AC-CDs exhibited specificity towards live, dead, and multidrug-resistant H. pylori strains. Based on the specificity, we developed a microfluidics-assisted in vitro sensing approach for H. pylori, achieving a simplified, rapid and ultrasensitive detection with two procedures, shortened time within 45.0 ​min and a low actual limit of detection of 10.0 ​CFU ​mL⁻¹. This work sheds light on the design of more H. pylori-specific or even bacteria-specific CDs and their realistic translation into clinical practice.

The development of a colorimetric biosensing assay for the detection of Helicobacter pylori in feces

As Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is closely related to the occurrence of gastric diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer, early detection of H. pylori is an urgent need. In this study, oligonucleotide probes conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were used in combination with H. pylori-specific aptamers for the rapid detection of H. pylori in stool samples, which converted the method of detection from proteins to nucleic acids. Therefore, qualitative detection of H. pylori can be achieved by observing color changes through the aggregation (red to purple) or deaggregation (purple to red) of AuNPs, and further quantitative detection can be achieved through UV spectrometry. The detection limit of the colorimetric biosensing method is 25 CFU/mL (S/N = 3), which is favorably comparable to other reported detection methods. Compared with the existing detection methods for H. pylori, this colorimetric biosensing method has no limitations to the test subjects. All these features render the colorimetric biosensing assay a promising method for the clinical field detection of H. pylori.

Aptamer-conjugated carbon-based nanomaterials for cancer and bacteria theranostics: A review

Aptamers are single-stranded oligonucleotides that link to various substrates with great affinity and selectivity, including small molecules, peptides, proteins, cells, and tissues. For this reason, they can be used as imaging agents for cancer imaging techniques. Multifunctional nanomaterials combined with imaging probes and drugs are promising cancer diagnosis and treatment candidates. On the other hand, carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs), including such as fullerene, carbon nanotubes, carbon-based quantum dots, carbon nanohorns, graphene oxide and its derivatives carbon nanodots, and nanodiamonds, are sort of smart materials that can be used in a variety of theranostic applications, including photo-triggered therapies. The remarkable physical characteristics, functionalizable chemistry, biocompatibility, and optical properties of these nanoparticles have enabled their utilization in less-invasive therapies. The theranostic agents that emerged by combining aptamers with CNMs have opened a novel alternative for personified medicine of cancer, target-specific imaging, and label-free diagnosis of a broad range of cancers, as well as pathogens. Aptamer-functionalized CNMs have been used as nanovesicles for targeted delivery of anti-cancer agents (i.e., doxorubicin and 5-fluorouracil) to tumor sites. Furthermore, these CNMs conjugated with aptamers have shown great advantages over standard CNMs to sensitively detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Citrobacter freundii. Regrettably, CNMs can form compounds defined as NOAA (nano-objects, and their aggregates and agglomerates larger than 100 nm), that accumulate in the body and cause toxic effects. Surface modification and pretreatment with albumin avoid agglomeration and increase the dispersibility of CNMs, so it is needed to guarantee the desirable interactions between functionalized CNMs and blood plasma proteins. This preliminary review aimed to comprehensively discuss the features and uses of aptamer-conjugated CNMs to manage cancer and bacterial infections.

Carbon Dots: Classification, Properties, Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications in Health Care-An Updated Review (2018-2021)

Carbon dots (CDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm in size, and are meticulously formulated and recently introduced nanomaterials, among the other types of carbon-based nanomaterials. They have gained significant attention and an incredible interest in the field of nanotechnology and biomedical science, which is merely due to their considerable and exclusive attributes; including their enhanced electron transferability, photobleaching and photo-blinking effects, high photoluminescent quantum yield, fluorescence property, resistance to photo-decomposition, increased electrocatalytic activity, good aqueous solubility, excellent biocompatibility, long-term chemical stability, cost-effectiveness, negligible toxicity, and acquaintance of large effective surface area-to-volume ratio. CDs can be readily functionalized owing to the abundant functional groups on their surfaces, and they also exhibit remarkable sensing features such as specific, selective, and multiplex detectability. In addition, the physico-chemical characteristics of CDs can be easily tunable based on their intended usage or application. In this comprehensive review article, we mainly discuss the classification of CDs, their ideal properties, their general synthesis approaches, and primary characterization techniques. More importantly, we update the readers about the recent trends of CDs in health care applications (viz., their substantial and prominent role in the area of electrochemical and optical biosensing, bioimaging, drug/gene delivery, as well as in photodynamic/photothermal therapy).
