UV-vis spectroscopic method for detection and removal of heavy metal ions in water using Ag doped ZnO nanoparticles

Comprehensive assessment of carbon-, biomaterial- and inorganic-based adsorbents for the removal of the most hazardous heavy metal ions from wastewater

Owing to the high cost of recycling waste, underdeveloped countries discharge industrial, agricultural, and anthropogenic effluents without pretreatment. As a result, pollutant-loaded waste enters water bodies. Among the diverse toxic contaminants, heavy metal ions are the most detrimental because of their chronic toxicity, non-degradability, prevalence, and bioaccumulation. The growing shortage of water resources demands the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater. Three SDGs of the sustainability agenda of the United Nations appeal for clean water to protect life beneath water and on land depending on the water sources. Therefore, efficient environmentally friendly approaches for wastewater treatment are urgently required. In this regard, several methods have been developed for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater, including adsorption as the most widely used method owing to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable nature. The present review discusses the progress in the preparation and application of various adsorbents based on carbon, micro-organisms, agricultural waste and inorganic materials for the extraction of toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Cr6+, As3+, As5+, Hg2+ and Cd2+. Herein, we provide information on the role of the homogeneity and heterogeneity of adsorbents, kinetics of the adsorption of an adsorbate on the surface of an adsorbent, insights into adsorption reaction pathways, the mechanism of the sorption process, and the uptake of solutes from solution. The present review will be useful for researchers working on environmental protection and clean environment.

Microfluidics in environmental analysis: advancements, challenges, and future prospects for rapid and efficient monitoring

Microfluidic devices have emerged as advantageous tools for detecting environmental contaminants due to their portability, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and rapid response capabilities. These devices have wide-ranging applications in environmental monitoring of air, water, and soil matrices, and have also been applied to agricultural monitoring. Although several previous reviews have explored microfluidic devices' utility, this paper presents an up-to-date account of the latest advancements in this field for environmental monitoring, looking back at the past five years. In this review, we discuss devices for prominent contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, nutrients, microorganisms, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), etc. We cover numerous detection methods (electrochemical, colorimetric, fluorescent, etc.) and critically assess the current state of microfluidic devices for environmental monitoring, highlighting both their successes and limitations. Moreover, we propose potential strategies to mitigate these limitations and offer valuable insights into future research and development directions.

Kinetic and equilibrium study of graphene and copper oxides modified nanocomposites for metal ions adsorption from binary metal aqueous solution

Presently, the main cause of pollution of natural water resources is heavy metal ions. The removal of metal ions such as nickel (Ni2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) has been given considerable attention due to their health and environmental risks. In this regard, for wastewater treatment containing heavy metal ions, graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites with metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) attained significant importance. In this study, graphene oxide stacked with copper oxide nanocomposites (GO/CuO-NCs) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analytical procedures. The prepared GO/CuO-NCs were applied for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions from a binary metal ion system in batch and continuous experiments. The obtained results revealed that GO/CuO-NCs exhibited the highest removal efficiencies of Ni2+ (89.60% ± 2.12%) and Cd2+ (97.10% ± 1.91%) at the optimum values of pH: 8, dose: 0.25 g, contact time: 60 min, and at 50 ppm initial metal ion concentration in a batch study. However, 4 mL/min flow rate, 50 ppm initial concentration, and 2 cm bed height were proved to be the suitable conditions for metal ion adsorption in the column study. The kinetic adsorption data exhibited the best fitting with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm provided the best-fitting data in the Langmuir isotherm model. This study suggested that the GO/CuO nanocomposites have proved to be efficient adsorbents for Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions from a binary metal system.

Effect of M-type reactive dyes on dyeing properties of twisted bamboo fiber bundles

The dyeing properties of twisted bamboo fiber bundles were studied by using the combination of three primary colors in M-type reactive dyes. The study found that the three dyes of red, yellow and blue have good color rendering in the actual dyeing process, and because the molecular structures of the three are similar, the chemical reactions during the fixation are the same, so the final dyeing rate results are similar, which were 29-32%. Compared with the undyed twisted bamboo fiber bundle, the mechanical properties of the three-color twisted bamboo fiber bundle also changed significantly, and the tensile strength increased by 13.79% on average. The changes of elastic modulus and elongation at break showed that the three-color twisted bamboo fiber bundle had excellent flexibility. In addition, there are significant color differences between the samples of each color. When the color indexes of DB are used as the benchmark, the ΔE* of other dyed samples varies from 40 to 80, and the color of each sample is relatively uniform, without an obvious color flower phenomenon. This indicates that twisted bamboo fiber bundles with richer colors can be prepared by different combinations of three primary dyes, which can improve the ornamental value of bamboo fiber bundles after processing into large blocks and their application potential in home textiles, interior decoration and other fields.

Chloride converts lead slag into a bifunctional material to remove heavy metals

Efficient and safe removal of arsenic and lead from industrial wastewater is essential for ecological protection. In this study, we developed a novel method using lead slag as a purifying agent and sodium chloride as a reinforcing agent to remove arsenic and lead from industrial wastewater. Through a combination of experiments and simulations, we elucidated the mechanisms involved in this reaction. The initial concentrations of As and Pb ions in the industrial wastewater were 4333 and 188 mg/L, respectively. After the reaction at 25 °C and a pH ranging from 9.7 to 10, the concentrations of arsenic and lead were reduced to 4.9 mg/L and 0.008 mg/L, respectively, achieving a removal rate of 99.9%. Our experimental results demonstrated that Pb2+ and AsO43- ions released from the lead slag and industrial wastewater reacted with Cl- ions to form Pb5(AsO4)3Cl precipitates, thus effectively eliminating a significant amount of As and Pb species. Simulation studies indicated that Pb5(AsO4)3Cl exhibited exceptional stability below 400 °C and could be directly stored. Additionally, the lead slag, which is rich in silica, played a crucial role in removing and stabilizing As and Pb ions. Under alkaline conditions, silica encapsulated the As and Pb species, adhering to the surface of the Pb-As co-precipitates and forming dense, irregular, small particles with internal and external structures that impeded the efflux of As and Pb ions. This phenomenon was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The kinetics of As and Pb ion removal was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the removal process was primarily governed by chemical interactions. Lead slag exhibits significant potential and advantages in the removal of As and Pb. This innovative method offers an effective approach to address heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater, thus contributing to ecological protection.

Defects mediated weak ferromagnetism in Zn1-yCyO (0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.10) nanorods semiconductors for spintronics applications

A series of carbon-doped ZnO [Zn1-yCyO (0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.10)] nanorods were synthesized using a cost-effective low-temperature (85 °C) dip coating technique. X-ray diffractometer scans of the samples revealed the hexagonal structure of the C-doped ZnO samples, except for y = 0.10. XRD analysis confirmed a decrease in the unit cell volume after doping C into the ZnO matrix, likely due to the incorporation of carbon at oxygen sites (CO defects) resulting from ionic size differences. The morphological analysis confirmed the presence of hexagonal-shaped nanorods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified C-Zn-C bonding, i.e., CO defects, Zn-O-C bond formation, O-C-O bonding, oxygen vacancies, and sp2-bonded carbon in the C-doped ZnO structure with different compositions. We analyzed the deconvoluted PL visible broadband emission through fitted Gaussian peaks to estimate various defects for electron transition within the bandgap. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the vibrational modes of each constituent. We observed a stronger room-temperature ferromagnetic nature in the y = 0.02 composition with a magnetization of 0.0018 emu/cc, corresponding to the highest CO defects concentration and the lowest measured bandgap (3.00 eV) compared to other samples. Partial density of states analysis demonstrated that magnetism from carbon is dominant due to its p-orbitals. We anticipate that if carbon substitutes oxygen sites in the ZnO structure, the C-2p orbitals become localized and create two holes at each site, leading to enhanced p-p type interactions and strong spin interactions between carbon atoms and carriers. This phenomenon can stabilize the long-range order of room-temperature ferromagnetism properties for spintronic applications.

Aggregation-induced enhancement of peroxidase-mimetic activity of DNAzyme-gold nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection of lead ions

Lead ion (Pb2+) detection is critically important in environmental protection and health management. In this work, we developed a simple signal-enhanced colorimetric sensor for the detection of Pb2+ based on the peroxidase-mimetic property of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). When a certain concentration of Pb2+ was added to a solution of DNAzyme-modified AuNPs, aggregation was triggered, and the result was an enhancement of the peroxidase-mimetic activity of AuNPs. Then, the chromogenic reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by the catalyst of AuNPs was used for the sensitive UV-Vis and colorimetric detection of Pb2+. When a higher concentration of Pb2+ was added, the greater amount of aggregation of AuNPs resulted in the enhancement of the UV-Vis adsorption of the solution at 652 nm, with a deepening of the blue color of the solution. After optimization of the experimental conditions, a linear relationship between the absorbance of oxidized TMB at 652 nm and the logarithm of Pb2+ concentration was obtained, which had been divided into two parts (25 pM to 2.5 μM, and 2.5 μM to 250 μM). The detection limit was as low as 10 pM. The satisfactory specificity and rapid response of the sensor showed that it has promising application for the detection of Pb2+ in real samples.

Antifungal action and targeted mechanism of Bio fabricated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles against Ascochytafabae

The current work focuses on analysing the structural, optical, and anti-fungal efficacy of ZnO nanoparticles using well diffusion agar methods and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). ZnO nanoparticles were created using the sol gel method. To check the synthesized material's spatial and optical characteristics, XRD, UV, and RAMAN studies were performed. The median diameter of produced nanostructures is in the region of nanometre, according to XRD measurements. Results from Raman Spectroscopy for the nanostructure are provided, together with comparisons to current development theory and reliable experimental data. The band gap of the zinc oxide sample is found by graphing (h) 2versus input photon energy and gradually decreasing the linear component of the (h) 2 to zero. The band gap energy is expressed by the line's intersection with the energy axis. Calculations show that the energy band gap is 3.22eV.The fungus Ascochytafabae is in control of the Phaseolus vulgaris L. (beans) blight disease. It mostly affects the plant's stem, leaves, and fruits. Phaseolus vulgaris plant leaf with Ascochytafabae infection was isolated, and ZnO nanoparticle effects were observed. It emerged that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were highly efficient against Ascochytafabae. By using the well diffusion method and an absolute concentration of ZnO nanoparticles, the maximum inhibitory concentration was 15.0 ± 0.2 mm.

Delving into the molecular initiating event of cadmium toxification via the dose-dependent functional genomics approach in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Determining dose-response relationship is essential for comprehensively revealing chemical-caused effects on organisms. However, uncertainty and complexity of gene/protein interactions cause the inability of traditional toxicogenomic methods (e.g., transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics) to effectively establish the direct relationship between chemical exposure and genes. In this work, we built an effective dose-dependent yeast functional genomics approach, which can clearly identify the direct gene-chemical link in the process of cadmium (Cd) toxification from a genome-wide scale with wide range concentrations (0.83, 2.49, 7.48, 22.45, 67.34, 202.03 and 606.1 μM). Firstly, we identified 220 responsive strains, and found that 142, 110, 91, 34, 8, 0 and 0 responsive strains can be respectively modulated by seven different Cd exposure concentrations ranging from high to low. Secondly, our results demonstrated that these genes induced by the high Cd exposure were mainly enriched in the process of cell autophagy, but ones caused by the low Cd exposure were primarily involved in oxidative stress. Thirdly, we found that the top-ranked GO biological processes with the lowest point of departure (POD) were transmembrane transporter complex and mitochondrial respiratory chain complex III, suggesting that mitochondrion might be the toxicity target of Cd. Similarly, nucleotide excision repair was ranked first in KEGG pathway with the least POD, indicating that this dose-dependent functional genomics approach can effectively detect the molecular initiating event (MIE) of cadmium toxification. Fourthly, we identified four key mutant strains (RIP1, QCR8, CYT1 and QCR2) as biomarkers for Cd exposure. Finally, the dose-dependent functional genomics approach also performed well in identifying MIE for additional genotoxicity chemical 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO) data. Overall, our study developed a dose-dependent functional genomics approach, which is powerful to delve into the MIE of chemical toxification and is beneficial for guiding further chemical risk assessment.

Future of Nanotechnology in Food Industry: Challenges in Processing, Packaging, and Food Safety

Over the course of the last several decades, nanotechnology has garnered a growing amount of attention as a potentially valuable technology that has significantly impacted the food industry. Nanotechnology helps in enhancing the properties of materials and structures that are used in various fields such as agriculture, food, pharmacy, and so on. Applications of nanotechnology in the food market have included the encapsulation and distribution of materials to specific locations, the improvement of flavor, the introduction of antibacterial nanoparticles into food, the betterment of prolonged storage, the detection of pollutants, enhanced storage facilities, locating, identifying, as well as consumer awareness. Labeling food goods with nano barcodes helps ensure their security and may also be used to track their distribution. This review article presents a discussion about current advances in nanotechnology along with its applications in the field of food-tech, food packaging, food security, enhancing life of food products, etc. A detailed description is provided about various synthesis routes of nanomaterials, that is, chemical, physical, and biological methods. Nanotechnology is a rapidly improving the field of food packaging and the future holds great opportunities for more enhancement via the development of new nanomaterials and nanosensors.

Recent advances in instrumental techniques for heavy metal quantification

Heavy metals (HMs) are ubiquitous; they are found in soil, water, air, and all biological matrices. The toxicity, bioaccumulation potential, and deleterious effects of most of these metals on humans and the environment have been widely documented. Consequently, the detection and quantification of HMs in various environmental samples have become a pressing issue. The analysis of the concentrations of HMs is a vital component of environmental monitoring; hence, the selection of the most suitable analytical technique for their determination has become a topic of great interest in food, environment, and human health safety. Analytical techniques for the quantification of these metals have evolved. Presently, a broad range of HM analytical techniques are available with each having its outstanding merits as well as limitations. Most analytical scientists, therefore, adopt complementation of more than one method, with the choice influenced by the specific metal of interest, desired limits of detection and quantification, nature of the interference, level of sensitivity, and precision among others. Sequel to the above, this work comprehensively reviews the most recent advances in instrumental techniques for the determination of HMs. It gives a general overview of the concept of HMs, their sources, and why their accurate quantification is pertinent. It highlights various conventional and more advanced techniques for HM determination, and as one of its kind, it also gives special attention to the specific merits and demerits of the analytical techniques. Finally, it presents the most recent studies in this regard.

Integration of leave-one-out method and real-time live cell reporter array system to assess the toxicity of mixtures

The ever-increasing number of chemicals and complex mixtures demands a time-saving and cost-effective platform for environmental risk assessment. However, there is limit promising tool for evaluating the contribution of each component to the total toxicity effects of the mixture. Here, four widely distributed environmental pollutants with different mode-of-actions, i.e., cadmium chloride (Cd), nitrofurazone (NFZ), triclosan (TCS), and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), were selected as components of artificial mixture. Integration of leave-one-out method and high-dimensional live cell array system was used to explore relative contribution of each component from the mixture. A quaternary mixture (All_4_chems) and four ternary mixtures (Leave_Cd, Leave_NFZ, Leave_TCS and Leave_TCEP) were investigated by Escherichia coli (E. coli) live cell array system with 90 environmental stress genes modified by green fluorescent protein (GFP) expressing reporter vectors. E. coli cytotoxicity tests demonstrated that TCS has antagonism effect with other three chemicals (Cd, NFZ and TCEP), while it was additive effect in other three binary combinations. A total of 26, 23, 13, 31 and 23 genes were significantly altered with fold-change greater than 2 over the 4 h exposure by All_4_chems, Leave_Cd, Leave_NFZ, Leave_TCS and Leave_TCEP, respectively. Clustering analysis based on time-series gene expression patterns and transcriptional effect level index (TELI) showed that Leave_TCEP has similar profiles with All_4_chems, demonstrating TCEP has the least contribution among four components to the quaternary mixture. Leave_NFZ has the least number of significantly altered genes, implying NFZ has the largest toxicity effect contribution to the quaternary mixture. The relative contribution in different pathways indicated that Cd has the most contribution to the mixture in redox stress, while TCS has the least contribution in DNA stress pathway. Collectively, our results demonstrated the utility of high-dimensional toxicogenomics data and leave-one-out method in prioritizing the relative contribution of each component in mixture.
