Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of clover-shaped nano-titania functionalized covalent organic frameworks for the dispersive solid phase extraction of N-nitrosamines in drinking water

A critical review of advances in tumor metabolism abnormalities induced by nitrosamine disinfection by-products in drinking water

Intensified sanitation practices amid the recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak might result in the increased release of chloramine disinfectants into surface water, significantly promoting the formation of nitrosamine disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. Unfortunately, these nitrosamine DBPs exhibit significant genotoxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic properties, whereas chlorinating disinfectants remain in global practice. The current review provides valuable insights into the occurrence, identification, contamination status, exposure limits, and toxicity of the new unregulated disinfection by-products (nitrosamine DBPs) in drinking water. As a result, concentrations of nitrosamine DBPs far exceed allowable limits in drinking water, and prolonged exposure has the potential to cause metabolic disorders, a critical step in tumor initiation and progression. Importantly, based on recent research, we have concluded the role of nitrosamines DBPs in different metabolic pathways. Remarkably, nitrosamine DBPs can induce chronic inflammation and initiate tumors by activating sphingolipid and polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism. Regarding amino acid and nucleotide metabolism, nitrosamine DBPs can inhibit tryptophan metabolism and de novo nucleotide synthesis. Moreover, inhibition of de novo nucleotide synthesis fails to repair DNA damage induced by nitrosamines. Additionally, the accumulation of lactate induced by nitrosamine DBPs may act as a pivotal signaling molecule in communication within the tumor microenvironment. However, with the advancement of tumor metabolomics, understanding the role of nitrosamine DBPs in causing cancer by inducing metabolic abnormalities significantly lags behind, and specific mechanisms of toxic effects are not clearly defined. Urgently, further studies exploring this promising area are needed.

Recent progress in the synthesis and applications of covalent organic framework-based composites

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have historically been of interest to researchers in different areas due to their distinctive characteristics, including well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, and structural tunability. In the past few years, as COF synthesis techniques developed, COF-based composites fabricated by integrating COFs and other functional materials including various kinds of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, silica, polymers, enzymes and carbon nanomaterials have emerged as a novel kind of porous hybrid material. Herein, we first provide a thorough summary of advanced strategies for preparing COF-based composites; then, the emerging applications of COF-based composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (sensing, extraction, membrane separation, and chromatographic separation) and catalysis. Finally, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of COF-based composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more COF-based composites with excellent properties.

Traditional methods and biosensors for detecting disinfection by-products in water: A review

In recent years, pollution caused by disinfection by-products (DBPs) has become a global concern. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, and the mechanism of their generation was unclear; however, the number of contaminants has increased exponentially as a result of rapid industrialization and numerous economic activities (e.q., during the outbreak of COVID-19 a surge in the use of chlorinated disinfectants was observed). DBP toxicity results in various adverse health effects and organ failure in humans. In addition, it profoundly affects other forms of life, including animals, plants, and microorganisms. This review comprehensively discusses the pre-treatment methods of traditional and emerging DBPs and the technologies applied for their detection. Additionally, this paper provides a detailed discussion of the principles, applicability, and characteristics of traditional large-scale instrumentation methods (such as gas/liquid/ion chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) for detecting DBPs based on their respective detection techniques. At the same time, the design, functionality, classification, and characteristics of rapid detection technologies (such as biosensors) are also detailed and analyzed.

Advanced Materials Design for Adsorption of Toxic Substances in Cigarette Smoke

Cigarettes, despite being economically important legal consumer products, are highly addictive and harmful, particularly to the respiratory system. Tobacco smoke is a complex mixture containing over 7000 chemical compounds, 86 of which are identified to have "sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity" in either animal or human tests. Thus, tobacco smoke poses a significant health risk to humans. This article focuses on materials that help reduce the levels of major carcinogens in cigarette smoke; these include nicotine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Specifically, the research progress on adsorption effects and mechanisms of advanced materials such as cellulose, zeolite, activated carbon, graphene, and molecularly imprinted polymers are highlighted. The future trends and prospects in this field are also discussed. Notably, with advancements in supramolecular chemistry and materials engineering, the design of functionally oriented materials has become increasingly multidisciplinary. Certainly, several advanced materials can play a critical role in reducing the harmful effects of cigarette smoke. This review aims to serve as an insightful reference for the design of hybrid and functionally oriented advanced materials.

Recent advances in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for wound healing and antimicrobial applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystal-like organic structures such as cartography buildings prepared from appropriately pre-designed construction block precursors. Moreover, after the expansion of the first COF in 2005, numerous researchers have been developing different materials for versatile applications such as sensing/imaging, cancer theranostics, drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, and antimicrobials. COFs have harmonious pore size, enduring porosity, thermal stability, and low density. In addition, a wide variety of functional groups could be implanted during their construction to provide desired constituents, including antibodies and enzymes. The reticular organic frameworks comprising porous hybrid materials connected via a covalent bond have been studied for improving wound healing and dressing applications due to their long-standing antibacterial properties. Several COF-based systems have been planned for controlled drug delivery with wound healing purposes, targeting drugs to efficiently inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms at the wound spot. In addition, COFs can be deployed for combinational therapy using photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial therapy along with drug delivery for healing chronic wounds and bacterial infections. Herein, the most recent advancements pertaining to the applications of COF-based systems against bacterial infections and for wound healing are considered, concentrating on challenges and future guidelines.

Maternal exposure to nitrosamines in drinking water during pregnancy and birth outcomes in a Chinese cohort

Maternal exposure to regulated disinfection by-products (DBPs) during pregnancy has been linked with adverse birth outcomes. However, no human studies have focused on drinking water nitrosamines, a group of emerging unregulated nitrogenous DBPs that exhibits genotoxicity and developmental toxicity in experimental studies. This cohort study included 2457 mother-infant pairs from a single drinking water supply system in central China, and maternal trimester-specific and entire pregnancy exposure of drinking water nitrosamines were evaluated. Multivariable linear and Poisson regression models were used to estimate the associations between maternal exposure to nitrosamines in drinking water and birth outcomes [birth weight (BW), low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age (SGA) and preterm delivery (PTD)]. Elevated maternal N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) exposure in the second trimester and N-nitrosopiperidine (NPIP) exposure during the entire pregnancy were associated with decreased BW (e.g., β = -88.6 g; 95% CI: -151.0, -26.1 for the highest vs. lowest tertile of NDMA; p for trend = 0.01) and increased risks of PTD [e.g., risk ratio (RR) = 2.16; 95% CI: 1.23, 3.79 for the highest vs. lowest tertile of NDMA; p for trend = 0.002]. Elevated maternal exposure of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) in the second trimester was associated with increased risk of SGA (RR = 1.80; 95% CI: 1.09, 2.98 for the highest vs. lowest tertile; p for trend = 0.01). Our study detected associations of maternal exposure to drinking water nitrosamines during pregnancy with decreased BW and increased risks of SGA and PTD. These findings are novel but require replication in other study populations.

Fluorescent paper-based sensor integrated with headspace thin-film microextraction for the detection of acyclic N-nitrosamines following in situ photocatalytic decomposition

BACKGROUND

In this work, a novel analytical approach based on the photocatalytic decomposition of N-nitrosamines combined with headspace thin-film microextraction of the generated nitrogen oxides such as NO has been developed for the determination of the acyclic N-nitrosamine fraction in drinking water samples. A hydrophilic cellulose substrate modified with fluorescent silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) was used both as extractant and sensing platform. A quenching effect of Ag NCs fluorescence occurs as the concentration of N-nitrosamines increases. Front-face fluorescence spectroscopy with a solid sample holder was employed for directly measuring the fluorescence quenching onto the cellulose substrate.

RESULTS

In order to achieve an optimal analytical response, different parameters involved in the photocatalytic reaction as well as those concerning the microextraction step were fully investigated. It is demonstrated that the photodegradation rate of cyclic N-nitrosamines at acidic pH is much lower than that of acyclic ones, which can be the basis for the determination of the later fraction in waters. Under optimal conditions, a detection limit for the acyclic N-nitrosamine fraction around 0.08 μg L^-1 using N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as model compound for calibration was obtained. Several drinking waters were spiked with acyclic N-nitrosamines showing recoveries in the range of 98-102% with a relative standard deviation of 3-4% (N = 3).

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

N-nitrosamines generated as by-products during disinfection processes applied to water cause multiple adverse effects on human health being classified as potential human carcinogens. This study highlights the suitability of a fluorescent paper-based sensor for the rapid analysis of the acyclic N-nitrosamine fraction (i.e. the most abundant fraction) as a total index in drinking water, being useful as screening tool before exhaustive chromatographic analysis, which saves costs, time and reduces waste generation.

Selective cationic covalent organic framework for high throughput rapid extraction of novel polyfluoroalkyl substances

Novel per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) raise global concerns due to their toxic effects on environment and human health. However, researches on analytical methods of novel PFASs are lacking. Here, a kind of selective cationic covalent organic framework (iCOF) was designed and loaded on the surface of cotton as an adsorbent. Then, a simple solid-phase extraction (SPE) method based on the cotton@iCOF was developed for high throughput rapid extraction of six novel PFASs in water samples, coupled with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) determination. Several important SPE parameters, such as the amount of iCOF, sample pH, desorption conditions and salinity were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection and quantification of this SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS method were as low as 0.08-2.14 ng/L and 0.28-7.15 ng/L, respectively. The recoveries were 77.9-117.6 % for the tap water and surface water, and F-53 B in surface water were detected. Notably, this SPE process was rapid (1 h for 500 mL water sample) compared with commercial SPE (normal 2-3 h), owing to little resistance of cotton@iCOF and omission of nitrogen blowing process, and high throughput with 12 samples concurrently extracted. Additionally, various characterization means and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that ion-exchange effect, hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and ordered channel structure synergistically contributed to the PFASs adsorption on cotton@iCOF. The cotton@iCOF-based SPE method with simplicity, rapidity, selectivity and efficiency provided new research ideas for the analysis and control of ionic emerging pollutants in water.

Research progress of N-nitrosamine detection methods: a review

N-Nitrosamines (nitrosamines) are attracting increased attention because of their high toxicity and wide distribution. They have been strictly restricted by regulations in many fields. Researchers around the world have conducted substantial work on nitrosamine detection. This paper reviews the progress of research on nitrosamine detection methods with emphasis on biological-matrix samples. After introducing the category, toxicity, regulatory limit and source of nitrosamines, the paper discusses the most commonly used sample-preparation techniques and instrumental-detection techniques for nitrosamine detection, including some typical application cases.

Preparation and application of nano petal-shaped covalent organic frameworks modified polystyrene-divinylbenzene- glycidylmethacrylate microspheres for the extraction of illicit drugs from wastewater

A novel nano petal-shaped covalent organic frameworks modified magnetic polystyrene-divinylbenzene-glycidylmethacrylate (NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA) microsphere has been synthesized. It is a perfect combination of high productivity of PS/DVB/GMA microspheres and excellent enrichment efficiency of COF particles, and the excellent properties of NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA microspheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorbent can extract illicit drugs via the reverse-phase interactions provided by benzene ring on the polymer backbone and the hydrogen bonding interactions provided by functional group (-NH-) on the COF particles. Based on using NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA as sorbents, an easiness-to-handle of magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction (Mag-dSPE) procedure is proposed for the simultaneous preconcentration of 12 illicit drugs from wastewater. The obtained results show high extraction efficiency of NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA to illicit drugs with recoveries between 81.6 and 116%. Furthermore, a liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the determination of 12 illicit drugs from wastewater at sub-ppt levels has been proposed and validated with the pretreatment of samples by Mag-dSPE. The limits of quantification (LOQs) for the 12 illicit drugs are between 0.40 and 4.90 ng/L. Validation results on linearity, specificity, trueness and precision, as well as on application to the analysis of 12 illicit drugs in ten real samples demonstrate the applicability to environment monitoring analysis.

Recent Advances in the Application of Covalent Organic Frameworks in Extraction: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of emerging materials that are synthesized based on the covalent bonds between different building blocks. COFs possess unique attributes in terms of high porosity, tunable structure, ordered channels, easy modification, large surface area, and great physical and chemical stability. Due to these features, COFs have been extensively applied as adsorbents in various extraction modes. Enhanced extraction performance could be reached with modified COFs, where COFs are presented as composites with other materials including nanomaterials, carbon and its derivatives, silica, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers, etc. This review article describes the recent advances, developments, and applications of COF-based materials being utilized as adsorbents in the extraction methods. The COFs, their properties, their synthesis approaches as well as their composite structures are reviewed. Most importantly, suggested mechanisms for the extraction of analyte(s) by COF-based materials are also discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of COF-based materials in extraction methods are summarized and considered in order to provide more insights into this field.

Rapid and selective determination of 9 nitrosamines in biological samples using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry

A sensitive, selective and convenient method for the simultaneous determination of 9 nitrosamines (NAs) in biological samples was developed using isotope dilution ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTRAP-MS). Multiple reaction monitoring-information dependent acquisition-enhanced product ion (MRM-IDA-EPI) scan mode was performed to eliminate false positive results, and the whole detection procedure was characterized by less time consuming and simple sample preparation. 9 NAs were separated through a T3 column with the gradient elution of acetonitrile and water, and detected by UPLC-QTRAP-MS with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source in the positive mode. The quantitative analysis was carried out via the isotope internal standard method with a matrix calibration curve. Under the optimized conditions, good linearity for the 9 NAs was achieved in the range of 0.2-20 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (r) higher than ≥0.9991, and the limits of detection and limits of quantitation were 0.02-0.1 μg L^-1 (S/N = 3) and 0.06-0.3 μg L^-1 (S/N = 10), respectively. Satisfactory recoveries ranging from 79.4% to 108.0% were obtained, and the precision of the proposed method, indicated by the relative standard deviations (RSDs), was 2.3-12.9%. The matrix effect study showed that NDMA, NMOR and NMEA presented a matrix suppression effect, NDPHA displayed a matrix enhancement effect, and the matrix effects of the other 5 analytes could be ignored. Real application of the developed method in 13 urine and 24 plasma samples demonstrated that NDBA, NPIP and NPYR occurred in both urine and plasma samples with the concentration of 0.038-0.60 μg L^-1, while other NAs were not detected. Such a method was sensitive and selective, and could be applied to the rapid qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 9 NAs in biological samples.

Magnetic covalent-organic frameworks for the simultaneous extraction of eleven emerging aromatic disinfection byproducts in water samples coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS determination

A simple method based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) was developed for the simultaneous extraction of eleven emerging aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water samples coupled with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) determination. A magnetic covalent-organic framework (COF) material, namely, Fe₃O₄ @TpBD, was facilely synthesized and fully characterized, followed by an MSPE process. Several important MSPE parameters, such as the magnetic ratio, Fe₃O₄ @TpBD amount and sample pH, were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection and quantification of this COF-MSPE-UHPLC-MS/MS method were as low as 0.07-1.81 ng/L and 0.24-5.99 ng/L, respectively. Good precision was obtained with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.3-10.9% (intraday) and 4.3-15.9% (interday). Furthermore, the validated method was proven applicable to real water samples; for example, the recoveries were 86.8-115.1% for the secondary effluent, and several DBPs in swimming pool water were detected. Notably, the MSPE process required only 7 min, ensuring that the DBPs were relatively stable during the whole analysis process and that Fe₃O₄ @TpBD demonstrated excellent reusability. The COF-based MSPE method with simplicity, rapidity and efficiency provided an ideal sample pretreatment alternative to determine trace DBPs in complex matrices.

Magnetic nanomaterials with unique nanozymes-like characteristics for colorimetric sensors: A review

Colorimetric sensors for the rapid detection of numerous analytes have been widely applied in many fields such as biomedicine, food industry and environmental science due to their highly sensitive and selective response, easy operation and visual identification by naked eyes. In this review, the recent progress of the colorimetric sensors based on the magnetic nanomaterials with unique nanozymes-like catalytic activity (magnetic nanozyme) and their colorimetric sensing applications are presented. Emerging magnetic nanozyme-based colorimetric sensors, such as metal oxide/sulfides-based, metal-based, carbon-based, and aptamer-conjugated magnetic nanomaterials, offer many desirable features for target analytes detection. And due to the unique nanoscale physical-chemical properties, magnetic nanozymes have been used to mimic the catalytic activity of natural enzymes such as peroxidases, oxidases and catalases. This review also highlights the catalytic mechanisms of enzyme-like reactions, and promising colorimetric sensing system for the detection of chemical compounds like H₂O₂, pesticide, ascorbic acid, dopamine, tetracyclines, perfluorooctane sulfonate, phenolic compounds, heavy metal ion and sulfite have been deeply discussed. In addition, the remaining challenges and future directions in utilizing magnetic nanozyme for colorimetric sensors are addressed.

Preparation of sheet-like covalent organic frameworks and their application for efficient preconcentration of 4-(tert-octyl)-phenol and 4-nonylphenol in textiles

In the design of highly ordered (covalent organic frameworks) COFs with "ordered domains size and orientation" construction in a well-defined arrangement, the molecular monomers are the key factors. Here, the effect of molecular monomers on the construction of COFs has been studied, and two kinds of molecular monomers, i.e., ethanediamine (flexible amine ligand) and 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl (rigid amine ligand) have been used for developing sheet-like COFs-I and sheet-like COFs-II, respectively. Furthermore, they have been evaluated in the dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) procedure for textiles prior to the analysis of alkylphenol by liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The results showed that, the optimal usage amount of sheet-like COFs-II used in the dSPE procedure was less than that of sheet-like COFs-I, which may be explained by much higher adsorption capacity of sheet-like COFs via hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Rectilinear calibration graphs were obtained for 4-(tert-octyl)-phenol (4-tOP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) in the range 0.2-20 µg/kg with determination coefficient (r²) higher than 0.9990, and the limits of detection (LODs) of 4-tOP and 4-NP were 0.039 µg/kg and 0.048 µg/kg, respectively. The developed method has been successfully applied to analysis of 50 textile samples, in which 4-tOP and 4-NP were found in six samples with concentrations in the range of 1.6 μg/kg-20.9 μg/kg.

Nano-optosensor based on titanium dioxide and graphene quantum dots composited with specific polymer for cefazolin detection

An optosensor using nanocomposite probes was fabricated for the detection of trace cefazolin. The nanoprobes utilized the high affinity of titanium dioxide, the good optical properties of graphene quantum dots and the good selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymer. The integration of these materials produced a rapid, highly sensitive optosensor with excellent selectivity for cefazolin detection. The fluorescence intensity of the nanocomposite probes was quenched when cefazolin re-bound with the imprinted recognition cavities of the nanoprobes. The fabricated nanoprobe exhibited a good linearity for cefazolin from 0.10 to 10.0 μg L^-1 with a limit of detection of 0.10 μg L^-1. The imprinting factor of the nanoprobe was 10.6 and selectivity for cefazolin was not affected by the analogue structures of cephalexin, cefatriaxone, cephradine, cefaperazone and ceftazidime. This nano-optosensor probe successfully detected cefazolin in milk and recoveries were between 85.0 and 97.4 % with RSDs less than 5.0 %. The results of analysis with nano-optosensor were in good agreement with HPLC analysis. The fabrication strategy of the nanocomposite probe can be modified for the measurement of other toxic compounds.

Covalent Organic Frameworks in Sample Preparation

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be classified as emerging porous crystalline polymers with extremely high porosity and surface area size, and good thermal stability. These properties have awakened the interests of many areas, opening new horizons of research and applications. In the Analytical Chemistry field, COFs have found an important application in sample preparation approaches since their inherent properties clearly match, in a good number of cases, with the ideal characteristics of any extraction or clean-up sorbent. The review article is meant to provide a detailed overview of the different COFs that have been used up to now for sample preparation (i.e., solid-phase extraction in its most relevant operational modes-conventional, dispersive, magnetic/solid-phase microextraction and stir-bar sorptive extraction); the extraction devices/formats in which they have been applied; and their performances and suitability for this task.
