Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To examine the effectiveness of family-centred interventions among family caregivers. BACKGROUND Family-centred interventions are an emerging form of intervention that can be effective at improving physical and mental health outcomes for patients and family caregivers. To date, no reviews have examined the effectiveness of family-centred interventions for family caregivers. DESIGN A systematic review, including a meta-analysis, was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) checklist. METHODS Seven English and two Chinese electronic databases were compressively searched from the outset to March 2023. Two researchers independently reviewed the abstracts and full texts, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias independently by using the Cochrane 'Risk of bias assessment tool'. RESULTS This systematic review and meta-analysis included 20 articles. The results of the meta-analysis showed that family-centred interventions could significantly improve caregiver burden (p=0.003), quality of life (p = 0.007), depression (p = 0.0002), and stress (p < 0.0001) but not anxiety or family functioning. According to our subgroup analysis, the family-centred empowerment model (p = 0.009) was superior to the other family intervention (p=0.004) in reducing caregiver burden. Family-centred interventions are more effective at reducing the burden of caregiving on family caregivers of adolescent patients (SMD=-0.79, 95% CI[-1.22,-0.36], p = 0.0003) than on adult patients (SMD=-0.37, 95% CI [-0.61,-0.12], p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS Family-centred interventions could enhance family caregivers' burden, quality of life, stress and depression but had no significant impact on anxiety or family functioning. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Family-centred interventions have the potential to improve the health status and caregiving burden of family caregivers. Rigorous and high-quality evidence is needed to confirm the long-term effects of these interventions on family caregivers. TRIAL REGISTRATION DETAILS The protocol has been registered in the PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews (Protocol registration ID: CRD42023453607).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Articulating a clear scope of practice for all nursing categories is essential for improving patient safety, quality of care, and nurse retention. However, this is not the case in many countries, including Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to analyze the actual scope of practice for nursing staff in Saudi Ministry of Health hospitals. METHODS The study used a cross-sectional exploratory design. The sampling method used in the study was the quota sampling technique. The scale utilized in this study was the Actual Scope of Practice (ASCOP) scale. Data were collected in March 2021 through an electronic form questionnaire completed by 286 nurses in two hospitals in Al-Hasa province in Saudi Arabia. RESULTS The overall mean score for ASCOP was 4.64 out of 6. When participants were grouped according to select characteristics (various nursing staff categories, educational levels, years of experience, nationality, gender, and type of work setting), the results revealed no statistically significant differences in overall ASCOP mean scores, except for gender and nationality. CONCLUSIONS The overall mean scores of nursing activities performed in practice do not significantly differ across nurses with different professional categories (health assistant, nursing technician, nursing specialist, and senior nursing specialist), indicating no clear scope of practice for each nursing category, in turn leading to role overlap among them in practice. The current study's findings can guide decision-makers to develop a clear scope of practice for nurses. The findings should also urge the decision-makers to reevaluate the usefulness of having multiple professional categories of nurses who are allowed to carry out almost the same job duties.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is limited evidence of children and family-centered care (CFCC) practice in different cultural contexts, particularly regarding the factors that predict it among nurses providing care to chronically ill children. Also, the CFCC's impact on the quality of care has not been well studied. This study aimed to test a hypothesized model in which nurses' attributes and care environments predict CFCC, thereby increasing the quality of nursing care. DESIGN AND METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study recruited a convenience sample of 405 nurses caring for chronically ill children in Saudi Arabia for an online survey between February 2023 and August 2023. Structural Equation Modeling evaluated the hypothesized model. RESULTS The hypothesized model fits the data based on the fit indices. Care environment affected CFCC (β = 0.831, p = .000), while nursing attributes only indirectly affected CFCC practices through the mediating effect of the work environment (β = 0.553, p = .000). The CFCC practices positively affect the quality of nursing care (β = 0.636, p = .000). CONCLUSIONS Nursing attributes impact the work environment, which affects the practice of CFCC and enhances the quality of care for chronically ill children. Investing in nurses' attributes and a positive work environment is crucial for nursing leaders to enhance CFCC practice and the quality of care. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The findings of this study can be used to shape policies and develop interventions to improve nursing CFCC practices and promote better quality of care for chronically ill children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe pediatrics nurses' beliefs about family-centered services (FCS) as a model of providing healthcare to children in acute care settings in Jordan. DESIGN AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Nurses who provide direct acute care to children (n = 246) completed the 'Measure of Beliefs about Participation in Family-Centered Service' questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe nurses' beliefs about participation, practical feasibility, implementation self-efficacy, principles, and potential adverse outcomes of FCS. RESULTS Many nurses feel confident (70%) about their ability to work with others in providing FCS and perceive having the ability to operate according to family-centered care (FCC) principles (68%). Many (75%) nurses believed parents should be encouraged to decide how much they want to be involved in the child's care. However, only 46% of the nurses valued attending to family priorities if the health decisions made by the family differed from the healthcare providers' priorities. Many nurses (70%) believed that healthcare professionals' competencies and capacities to work utilizing FCC are more important than their personal preferences and opinion. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study clearly indicate that nurses positively viewed providing children's care within a FCS. This supports the efforts to reasonably integrate FCC as an operating model in the pediatric healthcare settings in Jordan. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS FCS is a complex task requiring integrating multidisciplinary effort and healthcare providers' positive attitudes toward families as care partners. Steps should help maximize the organizational resources to facilitate family presence and create opportunities for professional-families partnerships for children's care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Globally, limited information is available on the relationship between the perception and practice of family-centered care (FCC), and the moderating effects of nurses' background characteristics on this relationship. This study investigated the relationship between FCC perception and FCC practice and the moderating effects of the nurses' background characteristics on this relationship. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using a two-stage stratified sampling method. Data were collected from 444 nurses using the Family Centered Care Questionnaire-Revised and analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 25. The Hayes PROCESS macro model, version 3, was integrated into SPSS to examine the moderating effects at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS The response rate was 98%, and a statistically significant positive association was found between FCC perception and FCC practice (r = 0.353, p < .001). Gender of a nurse (ΔR2 = 0.0206, p < .002), having children (ΔR2 = 0.0231, p < .001), experience (ΔR2 = 0.0107, p = .028), and working in a medical-surgical ward (ΔR2 = 0.0208, p = .008) had a statistically significant moderating effect on the relationship between FCC perception and FCC practice. CONCLUSION These findings provide minimal evidence of the existence of non-modifiable moderators of FCC. Future studies with modifiable moderators are therefore needed. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Understanding the moderating effects of nurses' background characteristics on the relationship between FCC perception and FCC practice may facilitate the development of FCC interventions that favor these background characteristics and facilitate the integration of FCC into routine policies and practices.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore the perceptions of family-centred care among nurses and the family members of hospitalised children and investigate the facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of family-centred care in Malawi. BACKGROUND In Malawi, approximately 34% of children have long-term illnesses that require hospitalisation. Family-centred care ensures that the delivery of healthcare is grounded in partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and their families, which can improve the psychological well-being of families. However, there is lack a good understanding of how families and nurses perceive this concept, its facilitators and the barriers. DESIGN This was an exploratory qualitative study. Data were analysed deductively and inductively using the five-step qualitative content analysis method. METHODS Twenty-nine nurses and 31 families were recruited. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured and face-to-face individual interviews. The study was reported using the COREQ checklist. RESULTS Both nurses and families of hospitalised children recognised the importance of nurse-family partnerships in family-centred care. Four themes emerged as follows: Perceptions of family-centred care, elements of family-centred care, facilitators of family-centred care and barriers to family-centred care. Specific information to families and the religious beliefs of families were identified as important facilitator and barrier to family-centred care, respectively. CONCLUSION The implementation of family-centred care is promising in Malawi, as it is positively perceived by nurses and families, and its implementation is consistent with the Institute for Patient and Family-Centred Care Framework. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Our findings present the best practices, gaps and challenges in the context of a low-income country regrading implementation of family-centred care. Education programmes on family-centred care are crucial for sustaining the current gains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses' effective handover communication is vital for patient safety and quality of care. Few studies have empirically tested how certain factors influence the quality of handover in the Saudi context. METHODS A descriptive correlational design was used with a convenience sample of all nurses (N = 201) working in Saudi hospital CCUs in 2022. Demographics and handover quality instruments were used to collect the necessary data in addition to two open-ended questions that asked about perceived barriers and facilitators to handover. The analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. RESULTS The majority of nurses reported good-quality handover. The regression analysis showed that staffing, cognitive capacity, the focus of attention, relationships, and safety climate factors contributed positively to the variance of handover quality. In contrast, intrusions, distractions, anxiety, time stress, and acute and chronic fatigue factors negatively affected the prediction of handover quality (p < 0.05). Nurses added types of shifts and languages as barriers to handover while emphasizing training and the use of standardized tools for handover as facilitators. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS Nursing handover is a multidimensional phenomenon. By understanding the determinants that contribute to or hinder handover quality, it is possible to develop targeted interventions aimed at improving communication and the quality of shift handover in CCUs. The current study's findings highlight the need for nurses to work in a more supportive environment, receive better training, and follow a standardized handover protocol. Additionally, nurse managers should pay more attention to nurses' well-being to control or mitigate the effect of psychological precursors on the quality of nurses' handover. Future research should investigate handover practices and outcomes on units that have both good and bad practice environments.

Abstract
IntroductionPalliative care access is limited in the Middle-East, with few specialist centers and forcibly displaced migrants facing additional struggles to access care. Little is known about the specificities of providing palliative care to children and young people (CYP) with cancer. They are rarely asked directly their concerns and needs, which limits the provision of quality patient-centered care. Our study aims to identify the concerns and needs of CYP with advanced cancer and their families, in Jordan and Turkey.MethodA qualitative cross-national study in Jordan and Turkey with framework analysis was conducted two pediatric cancer centers in Jordan and Turkey. In each country, 25 CYP, 15 caregivers and 12 healthcare professionals participated (N=104). Most caregivers (70%) and healthcare professionals (75%) were women.ResultsWe identified five areas of concern: (1) Physical pain and other symptoms (e.g. mobility, fatigue); (2) Psychological concerns and needs (e.g. anger, psychological changes); (3) Spirituality, uncertainty over the future and use of “Tawakkul” (e.g. use of religion as a coping mechanism); (4) Negative impact on social life (e.g. social isolation, loss of support); (5) Burden on caregiver and their families (e.g. financial issues, siblings left behind). Psychological concerns were a priority for both CYPs and caregivers (particularly for refugee and displaced families) but often overlooked during routine care. CYP were able to share their own concerns and care priorities.ConclusionsAdvanced cancer care must ensure assessment and management of concerns across the concerns identified. Developing child- and family-centered outcomes would ensure monitoring the quality of care. Spirituality had a more important role compared to similar investigation in other regions.

Abstract
Family-centered care (FCC) includes collaboration between families and healthcare providers, the creation of flexible policies, and the family taking an active role in the delivery of care. Secondary school athletic trainers provide care for underage patients in school-based health systems, making them responsible for maintaining communication with parents, guardians, and/or caregivers. This cross-sectional survey investigated the extent to which athletic trainers (n = 205) include aspects of FCC in their daily secondary school clinical practice (current practices = CP) and whether they believe that aspect of care is necessary for FCC to be provided in athletic training (perceived necessary = PN) in their everyday practice using the Family-Centered Care Questionnaire-Revised tool. The total mean score for the CP scale (mean = 26.83 ± 4.36) was significantly lower (p ≤ 0.01) than the PN scale (mean = 35.33 ± 4.17). All FCC subscales compared between CP and PN were significantly different (p ≤ 0.01), with each being of higher importance than CP in athletic training. Data analysis revealed four themes related to enhancing FCC in secondary schools: limited education and resources, staffing and space concerns, non-technical skills, and social determinants of health. Attention should be placed on developing resources and interventions for secondary school athletic trainers to collaboratively work with children and their support systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The need for patient centered care (PCC) and its subsequent implementation has gained policy maker attention worldwide. Despite the evidence showing the benefits and the challenges associated with practicing PCC in western countries there has been no comprehensive review of the literature on PCC practice in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, yet there is good reason to think that the practices of PCC in these regions would be different. OBJECTIVES This paper summarizes the existing research on the practice of PCC in the MENA region and uses this analysis to consider the key elements of a PCC definition based on MENA cultural contexts. METHODS Five electronic databases were searched (EMBASE, Cochrane, Medline, CINAHL and Scopus) using the search terms: patient OR person OR client OR consumer AND centered OR centred AND care. The MENA countries included were Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Djibouti, Pakistan, Sudan, and Turkey. Identified papers were imported to Covidence where they were independently reviewed against the inclusion criteria by two authors. The following data were extracted for each paper: author, year, location (i.e., country), objectives, methodology, study population, and results as they related to patient centred care. RESULT The electronic search identified 3582 potentially relevant studies. Fifty articles met the inclusion criteria. Across all papers five themes were identified: 1) patient centered care principles; 2) patient and physician perceptions of PCC; 3) facilitators of PCC; 4) implementation and impact of PCC; and 5) barriers to PCC. CONCLUSION The preliminary findings suggest that the concept of PCC is practiced and supported to a limited extent in the MENA region, and that the implementation of PCC might be impacted by the cultural contexts of the region. Our review therefore highlights the importance of establishing patient-centered care definitions that clearly incorporate cultural practices in the MENA region. The elements and impact of culture in the MENA region should be investigated in future research.

Abstract
Background Many children feel moderate to intense pain in the hospital following surgery. Untreated pain can have deleterious physical and psychological effects. Mothers' involvement in child pain care and management postoperatively has been shown to be important in improving the outcomes and experiences of children, mothers, and health professionals. Aims To explore mothers' involvement in postoperative pain care and management of their children during hospitalization and following discharge and identify approaches to improve management and participation activities. Methods We used a qualitative single case study design with thematic analysis. The analysis included 20 mother-child dyads and 21 nurses, involving observation of participants and semi-structured interviews of mothers and nurses. The analysis also incorporated a review of documents from the pediatric surgical department (hospital policies and forms). Findings The following main themes and sub-themes were generated from the data: (i) provision of pain information (expected type, frequency, and duration of pain after surgery, pain intensity score, pain relief medication, and pain management methods), (ii) communication deficiency (language barrier and breakdown in communication between health professionals), (iii) emotional and physical support (family support, environmental comfort, and sleep and meal requirements), (iv) social and cultural influences (patriarchal society, cultural and religious beliefs, and work status), and (v) hospital facilities, provisions, and services (entertainment, follow-up programs, education courses on pain management for nurses, and materials and services). Conclusions The study examined mothers' participation in postoperative pain care and management in a cohort of children admitted to a tertiary care setting in Saudi Arabia, highlighting key factors that influence involvement and suggesting approaches for improving participation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of an online Child Health and Diseases Nursing course emphasizing family-centered care upon the perceptions of nursing students toward family-centered care. A one-group pretest-posttest model was used in this study. The research participants consisted of 88 students studying at X University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. While 67.1% of the students stated that there were obstacles in implementing family-centered care, 73.9% stated that there were no facilitating elements in implementing of family-centered care. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of the students' posttest family-centered care attitude and parents' attitude at the end of the training. This study provides insights into family-centered care, which could be used in crafting policies and interventions in nursing education in Turkey. Such insights could foster positive perceptions of family-centered care among student nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A paucity of studies describes the prevalence of family-centered care (FCC) practices and resources in US neonatal units. PURPOSE To identify US prevalence of FCC practices and resources and to identify the largest gaps in resource provision. METHODS Neonatal nurses completed an online survey through national conferences (eg, NANN educational conference), neonatal organization Web sites (eg, NANN research survey), and social media (eg, NANN and NPA Facebook). Nurses provided demographics and the National Perinatal Association Self-Assessment on Comprehensive Family Support, a 61-item checklist of FCC practices and resources from 6 categories: family-centered developmental care, staff education/support, peer support, palliative care, discharge education, and mental health support. RESULTS Nurses (n = 103) reported lowest resources for Peer Support and Mental Health Support. About a third had a neonatal intensive care unit parent advisory committee (n = 39; 37.9%). Only 43.7% (n = 45) had necessary amenities for families to stay with their infants. Less than a third felt that mental health professionals were adequately staffed to provide counseling to parents (n = 28; 27.5%). Very few nurses had adequate training on providing parents psychological support (n = 16; 15.8%). More than half (n = 58; 56.3%) stated that all staff receive training in family-centered developmental care. Finally, less than half (n = 42; 40.8%) stated that staff see parents as equal members of the care team. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE We demonstrate a consistent and widespread lack of training provided to neonatal staff in nearly every aspect of comprehensive FCC support. IMPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH Researchers need to identify unit/organizational interventions that increase adoption and implementation of FCC practices and resources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to identify the core elements of centredness in healthcare literature. Our overall research question is: How has centredness been represented within the health literature published between 1990 and 2019? METHODS A scoping review across five databases (Medline (Ovid), PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase (Ovid) and Scopus; August 2019) to identify all peer-reviewed literature published since 1990 that focused on the concept of centredness in any healthcare discipline or setting. Screening occurred in duplicate by a multidisciplinary, multinational team. The team met regularly to iteratively develop and refine a coding template that was used in analysis and discuss the interpretations of centredness reported in the literature. RESULTS A total of 23 006 title and abstracts, and 499 full-text articles were screened. A total of 159 articles were included in the review. Most articles were from the USA, and nursing was the disciplinary perspective most represented. We identified nine elements of centredness: Sharing power; Sharing responsibility; Therapeutic relationship/bond/alliance; Patient as a person; Biopsychosocial; Provider as a person; Co-ordinated care; Access; Continuity of care. There was little variation in the concept of centredness no matter the preceding word (eg, patient-/person-/client-), healthcare setting or disciplinary lens. Improving health outcomes was the most common justification for pursuing centredness as a concept, and respect was the predominant driving value of the research efforts. The patient perspective was rarely included in the papers (15% of papers). CONCLUSIONS Centredness is consistently conceptualised, regardless of the preceding word, disciplinary lens or nation of origin. Further research should focus on centring the patient perspective and prioritise research that considers more diverse cultural perspectives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family-centered care is an important concept underpinning care of children. Although much researched in some settings, little research has explored specialist settings, or areas where both children and adults are cared for, such as the emergency department. METHODS This study sought to explore how nurses employ family-centered care in delivering care to children and families when a child dies in the emergency department. Using a descriptive, qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 emergency nurses from six Australian states. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Framework analysis was applied to examine alignment with family-centered care principles. FINDINGS Nurses described providing support and education, and encouraged families to engage in care decisions, including about ceasing resuscitation efforts. Commonly, senior staff members were allocated during emergencies to support parents. DISCUSSION Emergency nurses should be offered education on family-centered care, and research undertaken to explore families' experiences of their child dying in the emergency department. PRACTICE IMPLICATION Family-centered care should be a focus for the care of children and their families in the emergency department, regardless of the pressure from rapidly occurring events.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated (1) the discrepancies between the nurses' current and perceived necessary practices of family-centred care (FCC), and (2) the nurses' demographic characteristics associated with current and perceived necessary practices of FCC for hospitalised children and their families in Malawi. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study involving 444 nurses was conducted. The Family-Centred Care Questionnaire-Revised was used to examine the discrepancies between the nurses' current and perceived necessary practices of FCC. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed to identify the nurses' demographic characteristics associated with current and perceived necessary practices of FCC. RESULTS The total mean score of the nurses' current practices of FCC (M = 34.78, SD = 7.06) was significantly lower than that of the nurses' practices of FCC that were perceived as necessary (M = 38.63, SD = 5.60, p < 0.001). The nurses who were over 40 years of age (regression coefficient, β = 9.162, p = 0.014), had a postgraduate qualification (β = 23.314, p < 0.001), were separated or widowed (β = 9.661, p = 0.029), had a Tumbuka cultural background (β = 12.984, p < 0.001), were Seventh-day Adventist members (β = 8.863, p = 0.026), and worked in mission hospitals (β = 16.401, p = 0.021) were more likely to implement current practices of FCC. Conversely, the nurses who were members of the Moslem, Buddhist, or Hindi religious denomination (β = 6.587, p = 0.040), had a Tonga or Ngonde cultural background (β = 6.625, p = 0.046), and were nurse midwife technicians (β = -23.528, p = 0.012) were more likely to implement practices of FCC that they perceived as necessary. CONCLUSION Significant differences between the nurses' current and perceived necessary practices of FCC suggested that there were barriers to implementing necessary practices of FCC. The nurses' cultural and religious backgrounds were predictors of current practices of FCC, and this finding could direct the future development and testing of FCC interventions in Malawi. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Continued educational activities and research on the factors that contributed to the discrepancies between the nurses' current and perceived necessary practices of FCC and their impact on FCC in Malawi are critical.

Abstract
Child- and family-centered care (CFCC) is being increasingly adopted internationally as a fundamental philosophical approach to the design, delivery, and evaluation of children's services in diverse primary and acute health care contexts. CFCC has yet to be explored in the context of families and children whose health and health care is likely to be compromised by multifaceted social and structural factors, including racialization, material deprivation, and historically entrenched power imbalances. To date, an equity orientation for CFCC has not been examined or developed. This is a critical area of inquiry, given the increasing evidence that children in families who face such inequities have poor health outcomes. This article examines dominant discourses on CFCC in the context of families and children who are at greater risk of health inequities in wealthy countries, drawing on Canada as a useful example. It outlines an evidence-based approach to equity-oriented care that the authors contend has the potential to orient CFCC toward equity and provide greater clarity in the conceptualization, implementation, measurement, and evaluation of CFCC in ways that can benefit all families and children including those who have typically been excluded from research.

Abstract
PROBLEM Family-centered care (FCC) is a concept used to describe an approach to caring for children and their families within health services. This study compared mothers and nurses' perceptions of barriers to FCC. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in an educational hospital affiliated to Kerman University of Medical Sciences at the southeast of Iran in 2019. Using a researcher-designed questionnaire, we assessed mothers' and nurses' perceptions of barriers to FCC with a census method (60 nurses and 82 mothers). FINDINGS Mothers (49.8 ± 21.1) and nurses' (49.2 ± 16.4) mean scores of the perception of FCC barriers were at a moderate level. No significant difference was found between mothers' and nurses' perceptions of barriers to FCC. A significant relationship was observed between age, child's admission history, and the perception of FCC barriers in the mothers' group. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that national and regional policies of educational hospitals should assess factors contributing to the FCC barriers, focus on how to reduce these barriers, and provide appropriate collaborative care by nurses and the family of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient-centered care (PCC) is a core component of quality care and its measurement is fundamental for research and improvement efforts. However, an inventory of surveys for measuring PCC in hospitals, a core care setting, is not available. OBJECTIVE To identify surveys for assessing PCC in hospitals, assess PCC dimensions that they capture, report their psychometric properties, and evaluate applicability to individual and/or dyadic (eg, mother-infant pairs in pregnancy) patients. RESEARCH DESIGN We conducted a systematic review of articles published before January 2019 available on PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO Host and references of extracted papers to identify surveys used to measure "patient-centered care" or "family-centered care." Surveys used in hospitals and capturing at least 3 dimensions of PCC, as articulated by the Picker Institute, were included and reviewed in full. Surveys' descriptions, subscales, PCC dimensions, psychometric properties, and applicability to individual and dyadic patients were assessed. RESULTS Thirteen of 614 articles met inclusion criteria. Nine surveys were identified, which were designed to obtain assessments from patients/families (n=5), hospital staff (n=2), and both patients/families and hospital staff (n=2). No survey captured all 8 Picker dimensions of PCC [median=6 (range, 5-7)]. Psychometric properties were reported infrequently. All surveys applied to individual patients, none to dyadic patients. CONCLUSIONS Multiple surveys for measuring PCC in hospitals are available. Opportunities exist to improve survey comprehensiveness regarding dimensions of PCC, reporting of psychometric properties, and development of measures to capture PCC for dyadic patients.

Abstract
AIMS To consider the scope and quality of mixed methods research in nursing. DESIGN Focused mapping review and synthesis (FMRS). DATA SOURCES Five purposively selected journals: International Journal of Nursing Studies, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, and Journal of Mixed Methods Research. REVIEW METHODS In the target journals, titles and abstracts from papers published between 2015-2018 were searched for the words or derivative words 'mixed methods'. Additional keyword searches were undertaken using each journal's search tool. We included studies that investigated nursing and reported to use a mixed methods approach. Articles that met the inclusion criteria were read in full and information was extracted onto a predetermined pro forma. Findings across journals were then synthesized to illustrate the current state of mixed methods research in nursing. RESULTS We located 34 articles that reported on mixed methods research, conducted across 18 countries. Articles differed significantly both within and across journals in terms of conformity to a mixed methods approach. We assessed the studies for the quality of their reporting as regard the use of mixed methods. Nineteen studies were rated as satisfactory or good, with 15 rated as poorly described. Primarily, a poor rating was due to the absence of stating an underpinning methodological approach to the study and/or limited detail of a crucial integration phase. CONCLUSIONS Our FMRS revealed a paucity of published mixed methods research in the journals selected. When they are published, there are limitations in the detail given to the underpinning methodological approach and theoretical explanation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While family-centered care is considered a vital part of nursing care, nursing students seem to struggle in incorporating family-centered care in the clinical setting. Several factors such as minimal exposure in family interactions throughout their clinical practice, lack of experience in organizing family-centered clinical experiences, access to restricted clinical areas, and inadequate supervision from clinical instructors present as challenges among nursing students in practicing family-centered care. OBJECTIVES This study explored the perceptions of nursing students toward family-centered care in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN This study used the quantitative approach through the cross-sectional survey method. SETTINGS The study was conducted in the Faculty of Nursing of a government university in Saudi Arabia. PARTICIPANTS A total population sample comprising 232 female junior and student nurses participated in the study. METHODS After the approval of the Ethical Board Committee had been secured, a survey containing a demographic information sheet and the Family-Centered Care Questionnaire was distributed to the students from June 2018 to February 2019. RESULTS The overall mean of the students' responses in the questionnaire was 3.76 (SD = 0.67, range = 3.40-4.08), indicating a modest perception toward family-centered care. The dimension "family is the constant" received the most positive response from the students (M = 3.90, SD = 0.77), whereas the dimension "parent-to-parent support" was rated the lowest with a mean of 3.64 (SD = 0.89). Junior nursing students had more positive perception toward family-centered care than the seniors. Weak negative correlations were observed between students' age and family-centered care perception. CONCLUSIONS This study provides insights into family-centered care, which could be used in crafting policies and interventions in various health care settings and nursing education in Saudi Arabia. Such insights could foster positive perceptions toward family-centered care among student nurses and guarantee excellent family-centered care nursing practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Registered Nurses are expected to have acquired knowledge about the fundamental concepts within nursing science throughout their training and clinical work. However, the terminology and the concept of caring are debated; therefore, there is a need for a continuous critical investigation of scientific concepts within the area of nursing. OBJECTIVES To illuminate nurses' perception about the meaning of the scientific concept of caring. DESIGN A qualitative systematic literature search was performed that subsequently underwent a descriptive meta-synthesis in line with Deborah Finfgeld's descriptive meta-synthesis methodology. DATA SOURCES/REVIEW METHOD Scientific articles published between 1 January 2003 and 25 January 2018 were identified and retrieved from CINAHL and PubMed. Each included study was assessed and critically appraised. Data were extracted, analysed and coded into categories resulting in four different themes in accordance with descriptive meta-synthesis. RESULTS Four themes emerged in the analysis: 'To be', 'To want', 'To be able to' and 'To do'. These comprise different aspects within physical and metaphysical dimensions where simultaneously interact and influence each other. CONCLUSION There are central elements to the practice of caring that are separated in their simplicity but at the same time coherent, where no part can exist without the others in the practice of caring. There are shortcomings concerning current nursing theories, nursing philosophies and organisational documents related to varied aspects based on what is included in the practice of caring.

Abstract
Purpose This study was conducted to investigate nurses’ perceptions and performance of family-centered care (FCC) at a children’s hospital in Sri Lanka and to explore the feasibility of implementing FCC in the context of the Sri Lankan healthcare system. Methods A convergent, parallel, mixed-methods design was applied to understand Sri Lankan nurses’ perspectives on FCC. In total, 157 nurses working at a large teritagy children’s hospital responded to a self-report survey and 18 nurses participated in focus group interviews. Results Of the factors of FCC, family participation in caring for children received the highest score (4.09±0.51) for perceptions, and information-sharing received the highest score (3.54±0.55) for performance. The qualitative data revealed the following five themes: (a) importance of the family in caring for children; (b) helping families during children’s hospitalization; (c) taking steps to implement FCC, even with imperfect knowledge; (d) barriers in the current situation; and (e) suggested strategies to promote FCC. Conclusion Participants endorsed the concept of FCC and demonstrated some aspects of it in their day-to-day practice. The results indicate a clear knowledge deficit and several challenges, which need to be addressed to effectively implement FCC.

Abstract
Background Effective nurse–patient communication is important in improving quality of health care. However, there are several barriers to nurse–patient communication in Saudi Arabia. This is attributed to the increasing number of non-Saudi expatriate nurses providing health care to patients. In particular, there are differences in culture, religion and language among non-Saudi nurses and patients. This integrative review aims to identify and synthesize quantitative and qualitative evidence on the current practice in nurse–patient communication in Saudi Arabia and its effect on service users’ quality of care, safety and satisfaction. Methods An integrative review based on Whittemore and Knafl’s approach (Whittemore and Knafl, J Adv Nurs 52:546–553, 2005) was used to conduct the review. Peer-reviewed articles containing any of a series of specific key terms were identified from sources such as CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline, PubMed and PsychINFO. The review included studies that focused on nurse–patient communication issues, communication barriers, and cultural and language issues. The search was limited to papers about the Saudi Arabian health system published in English and Arabic languages between 2000 and 2018. A data extraction form was developed to extract information from included articles. Results Twenty papers were included in the review (Table 1). Ten papers employed quantitative methods, eight papers used qualitative methods and two used mixed methods. The review revealed two major themes: ‘current communication practices’ and ‘the effect of communication on patients’. Some of the communication practices rely on non-verbal methods due to a lack of a common language, which often results in the meaning of the communication being misinterpreted. Many non-Saudi nurses have limited knowledge about Saudi culture and experience difficulty in understanding, and in some cases respecting, the cultural and religious practices of patients. Further, limited nurse–patient communication impacts negatively on the nurse–patient relationship, which can affect patient safety and lead to poor patient satisfaction. Conclusions Current nurse–patient communication practices do not meet the needs of Saudi patients due to cultural, religious and language differences between nurses and patients. The barriers to effective nurse–patient communication adversely effects patient safety and patient satisfaction. Further research from the perspective of the patient and family is needed.

Abstract
AIMS To identify, appraise and describe the characteristics and measurement properties of instruments assessing nurses' attitudes towards the importance of involving families in their clinical practice. DESIGN Psychometric systematic review. DATA SOURCES The PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from their time of inception to June 2018. REVIEW METHODS Two reviewers independently assessed the eligibility of studies, extracted data, and appraised the methodological quality of the studies using the COSMIN checklist. RESULTS A total of 19 studies representing 5 instruments were included. Two instruments-a revised version of the Families' Importance in Nursing Care: Nurses' Attitudes scale (FINC-NA-R) and the Family Nurse Practice Scale (FNPS)-obtained higher scores for most of their properties. The instruments used in the remaining eight studies require further assessment of their psychometric properties. CONCLUSION This psychometric review offers a synthesis of the quality of the available instruments and gives a better understanding of nursing theory-based tools. The FNPS and FINC-NA-R instruments seem to be the most suitable measures of nurses' attitudes towards the importance of involving families in their clinical practice. IMPACT The growing emphasis on improving nurse-family relationships and the quality of care provided makes it necessary to have valid and reliable instruments for assessing nurses' attitudes towards the importance of involving families in their clinical practice. This paper provides evidence that will help clinicians and researchers make decisions about the most suitable instrument based on a critical appraisal and comparison of the measurement properties according to a rigorous methodology.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to offer a translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and psychometric testing of the Perception of Family-Centered Care-Staff (PFCC-S) and Perception of Family-Centered Care-Parents (PFCC-P) questionnaires for use in pediatric nursing in Iran. DESIGN AND METHODS The study was comprised of six steps. The first five steps included the preparation, forward translation, reconciliation, back translation, and back translation review of the translated questionnaires. In the sixth step, the content validity ratio, content validity index, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability were estimated. Through the convenience sampling method, 456 nurses and mothers were included in the study for confirmatory factor analysis, while 40 nurses and mothers were selected to evaluate the reliability of the two questionnaires. RESULTS Harmonized versions of the Persian PFCC-S and PFCC-P questionnaires were developed (steps 1-5). The content validity ratio of all items of the questionnaires was >0.62. The content validity index for the PFCC-S and PFCC-P questionnaires was 0.81 and 0.83, respectively. One item was added to each questionnaire, which contained 21 items. The confirmatory factor analysis verified the three subscales of respect, collaboration, and support in the two questionnaires. The intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the PFCC-S questionnaire were 0.89 and 0.87, respectively, and 0.79 and 0.81, respectively, for the PFCC-P questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS This study developed questionnaires that were compatible with the Iranian culture to measure the perception of family-centered care. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nurses can use these questionnaires to measure and compare the perceptions of family-centered care by staff and parents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When caring for a family as a unit, it is as crucial to communicate with the family members of a patient as it is with the patient. However, there is a lack of research on the views of nursing students on communicating with the family members of patients, and little has been mentioned in the nursing curriculum on this topic. AIM The aim of this study was to explore nursing students' experiences of communicating with the family members of patients. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive study. METHODS A total of 42 nursing students (21 undergraduate year-two students and 21 were master's year-one students) from one school of nursing in Hong Kong participated in in-depth individual interviews. Content analysis was adopted. The trustworthiness of this study was ensured by enhancing its credibility, confirmability, and dependability. RESULTS Two main themes were discerned. The first, "inspirations gained from nursing student-family communication", included the following sub-themes: (a) responding to enquiries clearly, (b) avoiding sensitive topics, (c) listening to the patient's family, and (d) sharing one's own experiences. The second, "emotions aroused from nursing student-family communication", had the following sub-themes: (a) happiness, (b) anger, (c) sadness, and (d) anxiety. CONCLUSIONS More studies on the perspectives of nursing students on communicating with family members should be conducted, to strengthen the contents and learning outcomes of nursing student-family communication in the existing nursing curriculum.
