Abstract
Antimicrobial photoinactivation (API) has shown some promise in potentially treating different nosocomial bacterial infections, however, its application on staphylococci, especially other than Staphylococcus aureus or methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) species is still limited. Although S. aureus is a well-known and important nosocomial pathogen, several other species of the genus, particularly coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) species such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus, can also cause healthcare-associated infections and foodborne intoxications. CNS are often involved in resilient biofilm formation on medical devices and can cause infections in patients with compromised immune systems or those undergoing invasive procedures. In this study, the effects of chlorophyllin and riboflavin-mediated API on S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus planktonic cells and biofilm are demonstrated for the first time. Based on the residual growth determination and metabolic reduction ability changes, higher inactivating efficiency of chlorophyllin-mediated API was determined against the planktonic cells of both tested species of bacteria and against S. saprophyticus biofilm. Some insights on whether aqueous solutions of riboflavin and chlorophyllin, when illuminated with optimal exciting wavelength (440 nm and 402 nm, respectively) generate O2-•, are also provided in this work.

Abstract
Aloe-emodin (AE) is a natural compound with photodynamic properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of AE-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The bacteriostatic efficiency under different photodynamic conditions and photosensitizing mechanism was studied in detail. The results showed that AE-mediated PDI exhibited a typical concentration and time-dependent characteristics. In terms of bactericidal mechanism, disruption of membrane integrity and increase of cell membrane permeability was observed. Type II reaction was assumed as the main photochemical reaction involved in AE-mediated PDI as evidenced by the action of different ROS quenching agents. Furthermore, AE-mediated PDI decreased the bacterial survival in freshly squeezed apple juice and maintained its quality. The combination of blue light and AE enlarged the application of AE as an effective natural photosensitizer suitable for a food system.

Abstract
The impact of curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment (PDT) on the microbiological, physicochemical and sensory qualities of salmon sashimi has not been explored. Herein, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of PDT on the shelf-life quality of ready-to-eat salmon fillets during chilled storage (4 °C) in comparison with five widely investigated natural extracts, including cinnamic aldehyde, rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, dihydromyricetin and nisin. From a microbial perspective, PDT exhibited outstanding bacterial inhibition, the results of total viable counts, total coliform bacteria, psychrotrophic bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., Enterobacteriaceae family, and H2S-producing bacteria were notably inactivated (p < 0.05) to meet the acceptable limits by PDT in comparison with those of the control group and natural origin groups, which could extend the shelf-life of salmon fillets from<6 days to 10 days. In the alteration of physicochemical indicators, PDT and natural extracts were able to maintain the pH value and retard lipid oxidation in salmon fillets, while apparently slowing the accumulation (p < 0.05) of total volatile basic nitrogen and biogenic amines, especially the allergen histamine, which contrary to with the variation trend of spoilage microbiota. In parallel, PDT worked effectively (p < 0.05) on the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate and adenosine diphosphate to maintain salmon fillet freshness. Additionally, the physical indicators of texture profile and color did not have obvious changes (p < 0.05) after treated by PDT during the shelf life. Besides, the sensory scores of salmon samples were also significantly improved. In general, PDT not only has a positive effect on organoleptic indicators but is also a potential antimicrobial strategy for improving the quality of salmon sashimi.

Abstract
Daphnetin (7,8-dihydroxy-coumarin, DAPH) is a naturally occurring coumarin presenting a wide array of biological activities. In the present study, daphnetin and its novel synthetic analogue 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methyl-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-coumarin (DHC) were encapsulated in solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) with Encapsulation Efficiency values of 80% and 40%, respectively. Nanoparticles of an average hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 250 nm were formed, showing a good stability in aqueous dispersion (polydispersity index 0.3-0.4), as determined by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). The SLNs were also characterized using Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). TEM images of the blank-SLNs indicated a spherical morphology and a size of 20-50 nm. The release studies of the coumarin analogues indicated a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism, while the release profiles better fitted on the Higuchi kinetic model. Moreover, the coumarin analogues and their SLNs were examined for their antioxidant activity using DPPH and anti-lipid peroxidation assays, exhibiting stronger antioxidant activity when encapsulated than in their free form. The coumarin derivatives and their SLNs were examined for their photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy against the human squamous carcinoma A431 cell line, with DHC coumarin both in its free and encapsulated form exhibiting significant PDT activity, reducing the cell viability to 11% after irradiation with a fluence rate of 2.16 J/cm2. Finally, the intracellular localization studies indicated the enhanced cellular uptake of the coumarin analogues when loaded in the SLNs.
