Abstract
This work aims to demonstrate the potential of pulsed laser ablation synthesis (PLA) of tellurium nanoparticles (Te NPs) for use in matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) applications. An experimental laboratory setup for PLA synthesis of fresh Te NPs was designed to prevent unwanted aggregation of uncoated Te NPs and avoid the need to use additional modifiers. Performing pulsed laser ablation synthesis in liquid (PLAL) using acetone was found to be the optimal way of preparing Te NPs. Another possibility is to use commercially available laser ablation devices for laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to perform PLA in a helium atmosphere, but this approach is less efficient and results in the formation of unwanted larger particles. The prepared Te NPs were studied using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods. TEM images showed the formation of Te NP nanochains composed of many crystallized Te NPs with sizes ranging from 8 to 15 nm. The various size distributions of the synthesized Te NPs identified using the DLS method correspond to the size distributions of aggregations rather than individual Te NPs. The synthesized Te NPs were used for a pilot study of their possible use with the MALDI-MS technique. An important effect was observed when Te NPs were used to perform a MALDI-MS analysis of the α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) macrocycles, which consisted in a decline in the formation of matrix adducts. Furthermore, several changes in MALDI-MS mass spectra of intact cells and a positive effect of Te NPs on the crystallization of the MALDI-MS matrix were observed.

Abstract
Laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) aroused intensive concerns for the merits of label-free and high-throughput analysis. Here, we designed a silver nanoparticles (AgNP)-modified indium vanadate nanosheets with doping samarium (AgNP@InVO4:Sm) nanosheets. The developed AgNP@InVO4:Sm nanosheets (AIVON) were synthesized based on the microemulsion-mediated solvothermal method and ultraviolet-assisted in situ formation of AgNP, then for the first time applied as a matrix in LDI-MS analysis. With the advantages including enhanced MS signal, little matrix-related background, high reproducibility, and good salt tolerance, AIVON exhibited much better prospect than non-modified indium vanadate nanosheets with doping samarium (IVON) and traditional organic matrix, thus allowing sensitive MS detection for a wide range of low-molecular-weight (LMW) molecules. Moreover, by coupling with headspace sampling thin-film microextraction (TFME), a kind of representative pollutant chlorophenols were identified and quantified via AIVON-assisted LDI-MS in environmental and biological samples. Volatile LMW pollutants could be preconcentrated after TFME, hence a sensitive and rapid assay with negligible sample matrix effect was realized by using AIVON-assisted LDI-MS. It is anticipated that this novel nano-matrix AIVON and the proposed TFME coupling detection strategy were of competitive merits for LDI-MS analysis in the fields of environment, biomedicine, and agriculture.

Abstract
This study presents the first-ever synthesis of samarium-doped indium vanadate nanosheets (IVONSs:Sm) via microemulsion-mediated solvothermal method. The nanosheets were subsequently utilized as a nano-matrix in laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). It was discovered that the as-synthesized IVONSs:Sm possessed the following advantages: improved mass spectrometry signal, minimal matrix-related background, and exceptional stability in negative-ion mode. These qualities overcame the limitations of conventional matrices and enabled the sensitive detection of small biomolecules such as fatty acids. The negative-ion LDI mechanism of IVONSs:Sm was examined through the implementation of density functional theory simulation. Using IVONSs:Sm-assisted LDI-MS, fingerprint recognitions based on morphology and chemical profiles of endogenous/exogenous compounds were also achieved. Notably, crucial characteristics such as the age of an individual's fingerprints and their physical state could be assessed through the longitudinal monitoring of particular biomolecules (e.g., ascorbic acid, fatty acid) or the specific biomarker bilirubin glucuronide. Critical information pertinent to the identification of an individual would thus be facilitated by the analysis of the compounds underlying the fingerprint patterns.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) displays harmful effects on the human health, including potent endocrine activity and potential impact on the development of cancer. Analysis BPA residues in water and plastic products attracted considerable attention in the past decades. However, dominantly used conventional analysis techniques are unable to directly and non-destructively identify the correct species of BPA in plastic products. Hence, this study demonstrates the effective utilisation of boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) as an inorganic matrix in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry analysis and imaging (MALDI-MS & MSI) for BPA. The presence of abundant hydroxyl and amino groups on the BNQDs' surface is favourable for the formation of hydrogen bonds with BPA, and increases their ionization and chemoselectivity. Intriguingly, the BNQDs matrix offers a distinct signal for phenolic hazardous molecules featuring different hydroxyl groups. The method was applied to detect BPA at nanomolar level in environmental water, and also allowed non-destructive and in situ mapping of BPA in plastics and pacifiers. This research provides a novel strategy for adapting nanomaterials as inorganic matrices for analysis of small molecular pollutants in environmentally relevant samples using MALDI-MS & MSI.

Abstract
A two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheet was prepared by a chemical exfoliation method and served as an excellent matrix for the detection of small molecules by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). In comparison with organic matrices (CHCA, 3-AQ) and a graphene matrix, we found that a MoS2 matrix showed better performance in analysis of amino acids, peptides, fatty acids, and sulfonamides. A systematic comparison of the MoS2 matrix with both ion modes showed that mass spectra produced in negative ion mode featured a corresponding single deprotonated ion, which was rather different from the complex multiple alkali metal addition peaks present in positive ion mode. In addition, better sensitivity and reproducibility were obtained in negative ion mode. The ionization mechanism of MoS2 as a matrix in negative ion mode was further discussed. The deproton peak intensity of the analyte fatty acid decreased after the addition of the hole-scavenger KSCN, indicating that the ionization of the fatty acid was caused by the Auger complex effect of MoS2 and electron injection. Experiments have shown that the MoS2 matrix detects small molecules with good repeatability and can perform semiquantitative analysis of sulfonamides. Finally, the MoS2 matrix was employed for quantitative determination of sulfamethoxine in serum samples by an internal standard method. This MoS2-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MoS2-assisted LDI MS) method provides a simple, rapid, high-throughput approach to evaluate the drug levels in the patient serum and can achieve convenient drug therapy monitoring.

Abstract
Metabolic fingerprinting is a powerful analytical technique, giving access to high-throughput identification and relative quantification of multiple metabolites. Because of short analysis times, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) is the preferred instrumental platform for fingerprinting, although its power in analysis of free fatty acids (FFAs) is limited. However, these metabolites are the biomarkers of human pathologies and indicators of food quality. Hence, a high-throughput method for their fingerprinting is required. Therefore, here we propose a MALDI-TOF-MS method for identification and relative quantification of FFAs in biological samples of different origins. Our approach relies on formation of monomolecular Langmuir films (LFs) at the interphase of aqueous barium acetate solution, supplemented with low amounts of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and hexane extracts of biological samples. This resulted in detection limits of 10-13-10-14 mol and overall method linear dynamic range of at least 4 orders of magnitude with accuracy and precision within 2 and 17%, respectively. The method precision was verified with eight sample series of different taxonomies, which indicates a universal applicability of our approach. Thereby, 31 and 22 FFA signals were annotated by exact mass and identified by tandem MS, respectively. Among 20 FFAs identified in Fucus algae, 14 could be confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Two-dimensional tellurium nanosheets were prepared by a hydrothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The nanosheets were explored as a novel matrix for desorption/ionization of small molecules including nucleobases, fatty acids and amino acids by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results show that the tellurium nanosheets have good UV light absorption, cause low matrix ion interference in the low-molecule-mass region, and have high desorption/ionization efficiency in the negative ion mode. Hence, they are a viable matrix for negative ion desorption/ionization in MALDI-TOF MS of small molecules. In order to investigate the desorption/ionization mechanisms, benzylpyridinium salt and bisphenol A were adopted as probes. The results show that both of the electronic transitions mechanism and laser-induced thermal mechanism play important roles in desorption/ionization process. Abstract
Food additives generally used in carbonated drinks, such as 4-methylimidazole (4MI), caffeine (Caf?), citric acid (CA), and aspartame (Apm), were measured by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) using nanometer-sized particles of iron oxide (Fe2O3 NPs). The quantification of 4MI in Coca Cola (C-cola) was carried out. In order to improve the reproducibility of the peak intensities, Fe2O3 NPs loaded on ZSM5 zeolite were used as the matrix for quantification. By using 2-ethylimidazole (2EI) as the internal standard, the amount of 4MI in C-cola was determined to range from 88 to 65 μg/355 mL. The results agree with the published value (approx. 72 μg/355 mL). It was found that MALDI using Fe2O3 was applicable to the quantification of 4MI in C-cola.

Abstract
A chip-based platform for laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) analysis of small molecules was developed by utilizing layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of MoS2 nanoflakes and polyallylamine on an arbitrary substrate. The LDI-MS efficiency of small molecules on MoS2 films increased as a function of LBL assembly cycles until reaching a saturation point. The optimized MoS2 nanoflake film exhibits high LDI-MS efficiency, salt tolerance, reusability and uniform ionic signal distribution, and its performance was further enhanced by surface modification with perfluoroalkanes mimicking a clathrate nanostructure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was detections of antibiotic resistance and resistance mechanism in bacteria isolated from mosquitos (Culex pipiens) living near humans. Therefore, antibiotic resistance in bacteria isolated from Culex pipiens was investigated by disk diffusion test and MIC E-test in this study. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was used for detection of resistant mechanism. In this study, hydrolytic breakdown products after a few hours of incubation of the bacteria isolated from Culex pipiens were detected. Results show that enzymatic destruction of ampicillin by beta-lactamases is able to be detected by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry from wild strains of potential pathogens. The MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is useful method for routine detection of beta-lactamases resistant mechanism, but overnight incubation of pure culture is necessary. The results are important for proper and fast intervention to limit the spread of beta-lactamase-producing wild bacteria and provide information for appropriate initial therapy of the infections caused by these microbes.

Abstract
In this work, the wet-corrosion process for the synthesis of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanowires in the anatase phase was optimized as the solid matrix in MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and the solid matrix of the TiO2 nanowires was applied to the detection of antibiotics in a daily milk sample. The influence of the alkali concentration and the heat treatment temperature on the crystal structure of the TiO2 nanowires was investigated. The ionization activity of the TiO2 nanowires was estimated for each synthetic condition using amino acids as model analytes with low molecular weights. For the detection of antibiotics in milk, benzylpenicillin was spiked in daily milk samples, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry with the TiO2 nanowires was demonstrated to detect the benzylpenicillin at the cut-off concentration of the EU directive.
