Trajectories of adolescent perceived stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic

Adolescents' trajectories of depression and anxiety symptoms prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic and their association with healthy sleep patterns

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in anxiety and depression among adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations between sleep and mental health among a large sample of Australian adolescents and examine whether healthy sleep patterns were protective of mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We used three waves of longitudinal control group data from the Health4Life cluster-randomized trial (N = 2781, baseline Mage = 12.6, SD =  0.51; 47% boys and 1.4% 'prefer not to say'). Latent class growth analyses across the 2 years period identified four trajectories of depressive symptoms: low-stable (64.3%), average-increasing (19.2%), high-decreasing (7.1%), moderate-increasing (9.4%), and three anxiety symptom trajectories: low-stable (74.8%), average-increasing (11.6%), high-decreasing (13.6%). We compared the trajectories on sociodemographic and sleep characteristics. Adolescents in low-risk trajectories were more likely to be boys and to report shorter sleep latency and wake after sleep onset, longer sleep duration, less sleepiness, and earlier chronotype. Where mental health improved or worsened, sleep patterns changed in the same direction. The subgroups analyses uncovered two important findings: (1) the majority of adolescents in the sample maintained good mental health and sleep habits (low-stable trajectories), (2) adolescents with worsening mental health also reported worsening sleep patterns and vice versa in the improving mental health trajectories. These distinct patterns of sleep and mental health would not be seen using mean-centred statistical approaches.

Anxiety in a COVID-19 school year context: three-way longitudinal study on Slovenian adolescent sample

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

We investigated the trajectories of anxiety, general anxiety and more specifically COVID-19 anxiety in the period of school closure in Slovenia using a longitudinal design with three time points: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the school year.

DESIGN AND METHODS

We have used data from a representative adolescent sample for Slovenia (n = 1233) and two anxiety scales: the LAOM Anxiety Scale and the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale. The findings from latent growth curve models show a significant difference in initial levels and a decrease in both types of anxiety as well as an interaction effect between the initial level and the rate of change of COVID-19 anxiety. In addition to investigating the change in time, we were interested in covariates.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

The findings show significant effects of: (a) gender, school level and academic achievement on initial levels of COVID-19 anxiety; (b) gender and school level on initial levels of anxiety; (c) gender on the rate of change in anxiety; (d) academic achievement on the rate of change in COVID-19 anxiety; and, additionally, (e) the significant but different role that school belongingness plays in anxiety and in particular COVID-19 anxiety.

COVID-19-related stress exacerbates the effect of child maltreatment on negative affect via increased identity confusion during adolescence

INTRODUCTION

Exposure to childhood maltreatment may undermine the crucial developmental task of identity formation in adolescence, placing them at risk for developing negative affect. The current study investigated whether COVID-19-related stress intensified the indirect link between child maltreatment and adolescents' negative affect through identity confusion.

METHOD

Using multidimensional assessments of child maltreatment (threat vs. deprivation), the study included a sample of 124 adolescents (Mage  = 12.89, SD = 0.79; 52% female) assessed before (January 2018 to March 2020) and during the pandemic (May to October 2020) in Georgia, United States. The majority of the participants were European American (78.8%), followed by African American (11.5%), Hispanic (3.8%), Asian/Pacific Islander (1.0%), and other (4.8%). We used structural equation modeling to test (a) the mediating role of identity confusion in the link between childhood maltreatment and negative affect and (b) whether COVID-19-related stress moderated these indirect effects. Simple slopes and Johnson-Neyman plots were generated to probe regions of significant interaction effects.

RESULTS

Threat and deprivation predicted an increase in adolescent identity confusion. Additionally, childhood threat and deprivation were indirectly linked to adolescents' negative affect through increased levels of identity confusion. COVID-19-related stress significantly exacerbated the link between identity confusion and negative affect.

CONCLUSION

Identity confusion is a mechanism underlying the link between child maltreatment and the development of negative affect in adolescence. Our results inform prevention and intervention programs that aim to reduce negative affect among adolescents who experience threatening and depriving rearing environments.

Functional connectivity mediating passive coping style and perceived stress in predicting anxiety

BACKGROUND

Passive coping style (CS) and perceived stress play significant roles as influencing factors in the development of anxiety. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanism linking passive CS and perceived stress to anxiety susceptibility remains elusive. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationships among passive CS, brain functional connectivity, perceived stress, and anxiety in young adults.

METHODS

Data from the longitudinal Gene-Brain-Behavior Project(GBB) and Southwest University Longitudinal Imaging Multimodal Project(SLIM) were used. We confirmed the relationship among anxiety, passive CS and perceived stress. Then, we investigated the mediated functional connectivity between passive CS and perceived stress, and used these functional connections to predict present anxiety and follow-up anxiety one year later.

RESULTS

Anxiety scores were significantly positively correlated with passive CS and perceived stress. At the brain network level, connections within the default mode network (DMN) and between the somatomotor network (SMN) and subcortical network (SUN) mediated the relationship between passive CS and perceived stress. Furthermore, present anxiety and follow-up anxiety one year later could be predicted by these mediated functional connections. Nodes with greater predictive contribution were mainly located in the left anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC), left inferior parietal gyrus (IPG), right superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and left middle frontal gyrus (MFG), mainly distributed on the DMN.

CONCLUSION

These findings demonstrated that the mediated neurobiological mechanisms between passive CS and perceived stress could be used to predict present and future anxiety, which enhance understanding of the neurobiological basis of anxiety susceptibility in this passive CS and perceived stress and may have implications for early preventing and intervening mental disorders.

Depressive and anxiety symptom trajectories in Polish adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of war in Ukraine: uncovering the role of family relations

INTRODUCTION

The aim of the study was to investigate longitudinal trajectories of change in anxiety and depression symptoms in Polish adolescents during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Additionally, we aimed to identify risk/protective factors and outcomes associated with these trajectories.

METHOD

We collected data in three waves between November 2021 and May 2022. Adolescents (N = 281 in the first wave) completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, the Filial Responsibility Scale for Youth, and questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine.

RESULTS

We identified three trajectories of depressive symptoms: resilient with low, stable symptoms (71% of participants), chronically elevated symptoms (11%), and acute symptoms followed by recovery (18%). We distinguished two trajectories of anxiety symptoms: resilient (75%) and chronic (25%). Non-resilient trajectories were predicted by higher levels of familial unfairness (perceived lack of equality and reciprocity in the family), relationship difficulties at school and at home, older age, and poor socioeconomic status. Chronic depressive and anxiety symptoms were associated with higher war-related concerns.

DISCUSSION

These findings can inform preventive and therapeutic interventions for at-risk adolescents to reduce negative long-term outcomes of social crises.

Trajectories of social withdrawal and social anxiety and their relationship with self-esteem before, during, and after the school lockdowns

The closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents' social withdrawal and social anxiety. Yet, self-esteem may have acted as a protective factor during this period. This study aimed to compare the trajectories of social withdrawal and social anxiety before (Year 1), during (Year 2 and 3), and after (Year 4) the closure of schools imposed by the COVID-19-related lockdowns, and to investigate the association of self-esteem with these trajectories. Participants were 844 (50.6% boys) Portuguese adolescents (mean age 12.70 years, SD = 1.14). The Social and Emotional Competencies Evaluation Questionnaire (QACSE) was used to assess social withdrawal and social anxiety, while The Global Self-Esteem scale of the Self-Description Questionnaire II was used to measure self-esteem. Growth curve analysis showed that social withdrawal and social anxiety had more negative trajectories during the year in which the school closures occurred. In addition, adolescents reported higher social withdrawal after the lockdowns than before the pandemic. Higher self-esteem was associated with a more positive trajectory in social withdrawal. Therefore, the results showed the negative of impact of the closure of schools on adolescents' social anxiety and social withdrawal, and that self-esteem was a protective factor during these challenging and adverse events.

Associations between pre-pandemic authoritative parenting, pandemic stressors, and children's depression and anxiety at the initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic

Large-scale changes due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic negatively affected children's mental health. Prior research suggests that children's mental health problems during the pandemic may have been concurrently attenuated by an authoritative parenting style and exacerbated by family stress. However, there is a gap in the literature investigating these mechanisms and whether pre-pandemic authoritative parenting had a lasting positive influence on children's mental health while they were exposed to pandemic-related family stressors. The current study begins to fill this gap by investigating these unique relationships in a sample of 106 4-8 year old children (51% female). Before the pandemic, caregivers completed questionnaires on their parenting style and their children's depression and anxiety symptoms. Shortly after the onset of COVID-19's stay-at-home mandate, parents answered questionnaires about their children's depression and anxiety symptoms and pandemic-related family stressors. Child depression and anxiety symptom severity increased. Higher levels of pandemic-related family stress were associated with increases only in child anxiety scores. Further, greater endorsement of a pre-pandemic authoritative parenting style was associated with smaller changes only in child depression scores. Study findings elucidate unique and complex associations between young children's anxiety and depression symptoms severity and pre-pandemic parenting and pandemic-related family stressors.

Understanding adolescent stress during the COVID-19 pandemic

Longitudinal studies across the globe documented significant increases in psychological stress and mental health problems among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health concerns, school disruptions, and social disconnection were major sources of stress. High levels of perceived stress predicted worse mental health outcomes, with girls, older adolescents, and socio-economically marginalized youth experiencing more pronounced mental health deteriorations. However, social support from family and peers was a protective factor against increased stress and accompanying mental health problems. We urge policymakers and other key decision-makers to improve the availability and financing of mental health services and support programs for adolescents to address the wave of mental health challenges following the pandemic.

Significant Increase in Deliberate Self-Poisonings Among Adolescents During the Second Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic

PURPOSE

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a decline in mental health of adolescents. The aim of this study was to analyze the rate of deliberate self-poisonings (DSPs) among adolescents reported to the Dutch Poisons Information Center before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

A retrospective study from 2016 until 2021 was performed to characterize DSPs among adolescents, and to analyze trends in the number of DSPs. All DSPs among adolescents with the age of 13 up to and including 17 years were included. DSP characteristics included: age, gender, bodyweight, used substance, dose, and treatment advice. Trends in the number of DSPs were analyzed using time series decomposition and Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average models.

RESULTS

Six thousand nine hundred fifteen DSPs in adolescents were recorded from January first 2016 until December 31st 2021. Females were involved in 84% of adolescent DSPs. A strong increase in the number of DSPs was observed in 2021 (45% increase compared to 2020), which deviated from the predicted trend based on previous years. This increase was most prominent in 13-, 14-, and 15-year-old female adolescents. Commonly involved drugs were paracetamol, ibuprofen, methylphenidate, fluoxetine, and quetiapine. The contribution of paracetamol rose from 33% in 2019 to 40% in 2021.

DISCUSSION

The strong increase in the number of DSPs during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic suggests that long-term containment measures such as quarantines, lockdowns, and school closures may enhance self-harm behavior among adolescents, especially among younger females (13-15 years of age), with a preference for paracetamol as DSP substance.

Adolescents’ perceived stress of COVID-19 and self-compassion in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study

Objectives

Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted mental health challenges for adolescent populations. The current study aims to examine the levels of perceived stress of COVID-19 and self-compassion and their relationship among adolescents in Saudi Arabia.

Methods

This study employed a cross-sectional online survey of adolescents from secondary schools in Asir, Saudi Arabia. Instruments we distributed online included the modified Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), in addition to demographic and health-related questions. A total of 500 adolescents completed the survey.

Results

Adolescents in the study reported an average moderate perceived stress level of 18.6 (SD = 6.67) and an average moderate self-compassion level of 3.22 (SD = 0.53). A significant correlation is also found between the two variables (r = −0.460, P < 0.001). This negative correlation indicates that lower levels of perceived stress are significantly correlated with higher levels of self-compassion.

Conclusion

The study results show that the perceived stress of COVID-19 is inversely correlated with self-compassion in Saudi adolescents. Further research is needed to explore how to enhance adolescents' self-compassion. School nurses’ role should be given full play in this area.
