All-metal σ-antiaromaticity in dimeric cluster anion {[CuGe9Mes]2}4

Dual External Field-Engineered Hyperhalogen

Hyperhalogens, a superatom featuring the highest known electron affinity (EA), have promising applications in the synthesis of superoxidizers. Contributions regarding the identified numbers and corresponding design strategies of hyperhalogens, however, are scarce. Herein, a novel and noninvasive dual external field (DEF) strategy, including the ligand field and oriented external electric field (OEEF), is proposed to construct hyperhalogens. The DEF strategy was shown to possess the power to increase Au₈'s EA, forming the hyperhalogen. Strikingly, the ligation process can increase the cluster's stability, while OEEF can realize the precise and continuous regulation of the cluster's EA. Moreover, besides the model Au₈ system, an experimentally synthesized Ag₁₇ nanocluster was also investigated, further demonstrating the reliability of the proposed strategy. Considering the crucial role of ligands in the liquid synthesis of clusters and the convenient source of OEEF, such a DEF strategy may greatly increase the synthesis and applications of hyperhalogens in the condensed phase.

Missing Link in the Growth of Lead-Based Zintl Clusters: Isolation of the Dimeric Plumbaspherene [Cu4Pb22]4

We report here the structure of an endohedral plumbaspherene, [Cu₄Pb₂₂]^4–, the gold analogue of which was previously postulated to be a “missing link” in the growth of larger clusters containing three and four icosahedral subunits. The cluster contains two [Cu₂Pb₁₁]^2– subunits linked through a Cu₂Pb₄ trigonal antiprism. Density functional theory reveals that the striking ability of mixed Pb/coinage metal Zintl clusters to oligomerize and, in the case of Au, to act as a site of nucleation for additional metal atoms, is a direct consequence of their nd¹⁰(n + 1)s⁰ configuration, which generates both a low-lying (n + 1)s-based LUMO and also a high-lying Pb-centered HOMO. Cluster growth and nucleation is then driven by this amphoteric character, allowing the clusters to form donor–acceptor interactions between adjacent icosahedral units or to additional metal atoms.

Superalkali Coated Rydberg Molecules

A series of complexes of Na, K, NH₄, and H₃O with [bpy.bpy.bpy]cryptand, [2.2.2]cryptand, and spherical cryptand were investigated via DFT and ab initio methods. We found that by coating Rydberg molecules with the “organic skin” one could further decrease their ionization potential energy, reaching the values of ∼1.5 eV and a new low record of 1.3 eV. The neutral cryptand complexes in this sense possess a weakly bounded electron and may be considered as very strong reducing agents. Moreover, the presence of an organic cage increases the thermodynamic stability of Rydberg molecules making them stable toward the proton detachment.

[Co2@(Ge17Ni)]4-: the first edge-sharing double-cage endohedral germanide

We report here a new double-cage endohedral Ge cluster, [Co₂@(Ge₁₇Ni)]^4-, fused through two [Co@(Ge₉Ni)] moieties with a shared Ni-Ge edge. This ternary Co-Ge-Ni species not only represents the first double-cage example of an 18-vertex Zintl cluster, but also fills in the missing link of the edge fusion model in the double-cage systems.

Occurrence of Double Bond in π-Aromatic Rings: An Easy Way to Design Doubly Aromatic Carbon-Metal Structures

A chemical bonding of several metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes was studied via an adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) algorithm and the induced magnetic field analysis. A unique chemical bonding pattern was discovered where the M=C (M: Os, Re) double bond coexists with the delocalized 6c-2e π-bonding elements responsible for aromatic properties of the investigated complexes. In opposition to the previous description where 8 delocalized π-electrons were reported in metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes, we showed that only six delocalized π-electrons are present in those molecules. Thus, there is no deviation from Hückel's aromaticity rule for metallabenzynes/metallabenzenes complexes. Based on the discovered bonding pattern, we propose two thermodynamically stable novel molecules that possess not only π-delocalization but also retain six σ-delocalized electrons, rendering them as doubly aromatic species. As a result, our investigation gives a new direction for the search for carbon-metal doubly aromatic molecules.

Inter/Intramolecular Cascade of 1,6-Enynes Catalyzed by All-Metal Aromatic Tripalladium Complexes and Carboxylic Acids

Trinuclear all-metal aromatic clusters are an original class of molecules with a cyclic and planar metal core. Characterized by peculiar metal-metal delocalized bonds, they represent a new frontier in transition-metal catalysis. We report a study on C-C-forming reactions of polyunsaturated substrates catalyzed by trinuclear all-metal aromatic palladium clusters. The synthesis of two new families of tricyclic compounds was obtained with a broad functional group tolerance under mild reaction conditions. A peculiar regio- and diastereoselectivity characterized the method, demonstrating that trinuclear palladium complexes are complementary to their popular mononuclear peers. Furthermore, preliminary studies on the mechanism of these polycyclization reactions revealed unique features of the homogeneous catalytic system.

Ternary aromatic and anti-aromatic clusters derived from the hypho species [Sn2Sb5]3

Heterometallic clusters have attracted broad interests in the synthetic chemistry due to their various coordination modes and potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we report the synthesis, experimental, and theoretical characterizations of four ternary clusters ([M₂(CO)₆Sn₂Sb₅]^3- (M = Cr, Mo), and [(MSn₂Sb₅)₂]^4-, (M = Cu, Ag)) in the process of capturing the hypho- [Sn₂Sb₅]^3- in ethylenediamine (en) solution. We show that the coordination of the binary anion to transition-metal ions or fragments provides additional stabilization due to the formation of locally σ-aromatic units, producing a spherical aromatic shielding region in the cages. While in the case of [Mo₂(CO)₆Sn₂Sb₅]^3- stabilization arises from locally σ-aromatic three-centre and five-centre two-electron bonds, aromatic islands in [(AgSn₂Sb₅)₂]^4- and [(CuSn₂Sb₅)₂]^4- render them globally antiaromatic. This work describes the coordination chemistry of the versatile building block [Sn₂Sb₅]^3-, thus providing conceptual advances in the field of metal-metal bonding in clusters.

[Sn8 ]6- -Bridged Mixed-Valence ZnI /ZnII in {[K2 ZnSn8 (ZnMes)]2 }4- Inverse Sandwich-Type Cluster Supported by a ZnI -ZnI Bond

Since [Sn₈ ]^6- was discovered from the solid-state phase in 2000, its solution chemistry has been elusive due to the high charges and chemical activity. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of an inverse sandwich-type cluster dimer {[K₂ ZnSn₈ (ZnMes)]₂ }^4- (1 a), in which the highly charged [Sn₈ ]^6- is captured by mixed-valence Zn^I /Zn^II to form the dimer {closo-[Zn₂ Sn₈ ]}₂ moieties bridged by a Zn-Zn bond. Such Zn-Sn cluster not only exhibits a novel example of mixed-valence Zn^I /Zn^II for stabilizing highly active anion species, but also indicates the [Sn₈ ]^6- cluster can act as a novel bridging ligand, like arene, with a η⁴ :η⁴ -fashion. Theoretical calculations indicate that a significant delocalization of electrons over Zn atoms plays a vital role in the stabilization of the [Sn₈ ]^6- species. The AdNDP and magnetic response analyses clearly showed the presence of local σ-aromaticity in three cluster fragments: two ZnSn₄ caps and Sn₈ square antiprism.

Isolation and Reactivity of an Antiaromatic s-Block Metal Compound

The concepts of aromaticity and antiaromaticity have a long history, and countless demonstrations of these phenomena have been made with molecules based on elements from the p, d, and f blocks of the periodic table. In contrast, the limited oxidation-state flexibility of the s-block metals has long stood in the way of their participation in sophisticated π-bonding arrangements, and truly antiaromatic systems containing s-block metals are altogether absent or remain poorly defined. Using spectroscopic, structural, and computational techniques, we present herein the synthesis and authentication of a heterocyclic compound containing the alkaline earth metal beryllium that exhibits significant antiaromaticity, and detail its chemical reduction and Lewis-base-coordination chemistry.
