Inducing rapid polysulfide transformation through enhanced interfacial electronic interaction for lithium-sulfur batteries

Interfacial "Double-Terminal Binding Sites" Catalysts Synergistically Boosting the Electrocatalytic Li2S Redox for Durable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Catalytic conversion of polysulfides emerges as a promising approach to improve the kinetics and mitigate polysulfide shuttling in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, especially under conditions of high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte. Herein, we present a separator architecture that incorporates double-terminal binding (DTB) sites within a nitrogen-doped carbon framework, consisting of polar Co0.85Se and Co clusters (Co/Co0.85Se@NC), to enhance the durability of Li-S batteries. The uniformly dispersed clusters of polar Co0.85Se and Co offer abundant active sites for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), enabling efficient LiPS conversion while also serving as anchors through a combination of chemical interactions. Density functional theory calculations, along with in situ Raman and X-ray diffraction characterizations, reveal that the DTB effect strengthens the binding energy to polysulfides and lowers the energy barriers of polysulfide redox reactions. Li-S batteries utilizing the Co/Co0.85Se@NC-modified separator demonstrate exceptional cycling stability (0.042% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2 C) and rate capability (849 mAh g-1 at 3 C), as well as deliver an impressive areal capacity of 10.0 mAh cm-2 even in challenging conditions with a high sulfur loading (10.7 mg cm-2) and lean electrolyte environments (5.8 μL mg-1). The DTB site strategy offers valuable insights into the development of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Application of Inorganic Quantum Dots in Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have emerged as one of the most attractive alternatives for post-lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, owing to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the large-scale application of Li-S batteries remains enormously problematic because of the poor cycling life and safety problems, induced by the low conductivity , severe shuttling effect, poor reaction kinetics, and lithium dendrite formation. In recent studies, catalytic techniques are reported to promote the commercial application of Li-S batteries. Compared with the conventional catalytic sites on host materials, quantum dots (QDs) with ultrafine particle size (<10 nm) can provide large accessible surface area and strong polarity to restrict the shuttling effect, excellent catalytic effect to enhance the kinetics of redox reactions, as well as abundant lithiophilic nucleation sites to regulate Li deposition. In this review, the intrinsic hurdles of S conversion and Li stripping/plating reactions are first summarized. More importantly, a comprehensive overview is provided of inorganic QDs, in improving the efficiency and stability of Li-S batteries, with the strategies including composition optimization, defect and morphological engineering, design of heterostructures, and so forth. Finally, the prospects and challenges of QDs in Li-S batteries are discussed.

A Polysulfides-Confined All-in-One Porous Microcapsule Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cathode

Developing emerging materials for high energy-density lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is of great significance to suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides and to accommodate the volumetric change of sulfur. Here, a novel porous microcapsule system containing a carbon nanotubes/tin dioxide quantum dots/S (CNTs/QDs/S) composite core and a porous shell prepared through a liquid-driven coaxial microfluidic method as Li-S battery cathode is developed. The encapsulated CNTs in the microcapsules provide pathways for electron transport; SnO₂ QDs on CNTs immobilize the polysulfides by strong adsorption, which is verified by using density functional theory calculations on binding energies. The porous shell of the microcapsule is beneficial for ion diffusion and electrolyte penetration. The void inside the microcapsule accommodates the volumetric change of sulfur. The Li-S battery based on the porous CNTs/QDs/S microcapsules displays a high capacity of 1025 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. When the sulfur loading is 2.03 mg cm^-2 , the battery shows a stable cycling life of 700 cycles, a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.9%, a recoverable rate-performance during repeated tests, and a good temperature tolerance at both -5 and 45 °C, which indicates a potential for applications at different conditions.

Advances in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: From Academic Research to Commercial Viability

Lithium-ion batteries, which have revolutionized portable electronics over the past three decades, were eventually recognized with the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry. As the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries is approaching its limit, developing new battery technologies beyond lithium-ion chemistry is significant for next-generation high energy storage. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which rely on the reversible redox reactions between lithium and sulfur, appears to be a promising energy storage system to take over from the conventional lithium-ion batteries for next-generation energy storage owing to their overwhelming energy density compared to the existing lithium-ion batteries today. Over the past 60 years, especially the past decade, significant academic and commercial progress has been made on Li-S batteries. From the concept of the sulfur cathode first proposed in the 1960s to the current commercial Li-S batteries used in unmanned aircraft, the story of Li-S batteries is full of breakthroughs and back tracing steps. Herein, the development and advancement of Li-S batteries in terms of sulfur-based composite cathode design, separator modification, binder improvement, electrolyte optimization, and lithium metal protection is summarized. An outlook on the future directions and prospects for Li-S batteries is also offered.

A Comparative Study on Na2Fe0.6Mn0.4PO4F/C Cathode Materials Synthesized With Various Carbon Sources for Na-ion Batteries

Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C composite materials are synthesized with various carbon sources via a simple spray-drying method in this study, and the effect of carbon sources on structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties of Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C materials are investigated in detail. XRD and SEM results indicate that the reduction ability of carbon sources has a key impact on the structure and morphology of Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C composite materials. Among these Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C materials, the sample prepared with ascorbic acid presents a uniform hollow spherical architecture. Electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C sample prepared with ascorbic acid has optimal electrochemical performance. The sample shows high discharge capacities of 95.1 and 48.1 mAh g⁻¹ at 0.05C and 1C rates, respectively, and it exhibits an improved cycle stability (91.7% retention after 100 cycles at 0.5C), which are superior to Na₂Fe_0.6Mn_0.4PO₄F/C materials prepared with other carbon sources. This study demonstrates that the reduction ability of carbon sources significantly influences the electrochemical properties of fluorophosphate/C composite materials. This work also provides a promising strategy to obtain high performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

3D Hollow rGO Microsphere Decorated with ZnO Nanoparticles as Efficient Sulfur Host for High-Performance Li-S Battery

Lithium-sulfur battery (LSB) will become the next generation energy storage device if its severe shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics can be effectively addressed. Here, a unique three-dimensional hollow reduced graphene oxide microsphere decorated with ZnO nanoparticles (3D-ZnO/rGO) is synthesized to decrease the dissolution of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) into the electrolyte. The chemical adsorption of ZnO on LiPS is combined with the physical adsorption of 3D-rGO microsphere to synergistically suppress the shuttle effect. The obtained 3D-ZnO/rGO can provide sufficient space for sulfur storage, and effectively alleviate the repeated volume changes of sulfur during the cycle. When the prepared S-3D-ZnO/rGO was used as the cathode in LSB, an initial discharge specific capacity of 1277 mAh g⁻¹ was achieved at 0.1 C. After 100 cycles, 949 mAh g⁻¹ can still be maintained. Even at 1 C, a reversible discharge specific capacity of 726 mAh g⁻¹ was delivered.
