Singlet fission in tetracene: an excited state analysis

The dominant nature of Herzberg-Teller terms in the photophysical description of naphthalene compared to anthracene and tetracene

The first order and second order corrected photoluminescence quantum yields are computed and compared to experiment for naphthalene in this manuscript discussing negative results. Results for anthracene and tetracene are recalled from previous work (Manian et al. in J Chem Phys 155:054108, 2021), and the results for all three polyacenes are juxtaposed to each other. While at the Franck-Condon point, each of the three noted polyacenes were found to possess a quantum yield near unity. Following the consideration of Herzberg-Teller effects, quantum yields stabilised for anthracene and tetracene to 0.19 and 0.08, respectively. Conversely, the second order corrected quantum yield for naphthalene was found to be 0.91. Analysis of this result showed that while the predicted non-radiative pathways correlate well with what should be expected, the approximation used to calculate second order corrected fluorescence, which yielded very positive results for many other molecular systems, here is unable to account for strong second order contributions, resulting in a grossly overestimated rate of fluorescence. However, substitution of an experimental radiative rate results in a quantum yield of 0.33. This work extols the importance of Herzberg-Teller terms in photophysical descriptions of chromophores, and highlights those cases in which a treatment beyond the above approximation is required.

Synthesis and Characterizations of 5,5'-Bibenzo[rst]pentaphene with Axial Chirality and Symmetry-Breaking Charge Transfer

Exploration of novel biaryls consisting of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) units can be an important strategy toward further developments of organic materials with unique properties. In this study, 5,5'-bibenzo[rst]pentaphene (BBPP) with two benzo[rst]pentaphene (BPP) units is synthesized in an efficient and versatile approach, and its structure is unambiguously elucidated by X-ray crystallography. BBPP exhibits axial chirality, and the (M)- and (P)-enantiomers are resolved by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography and studied by circular dichroism spectroscopy. These enantiomers have a relatively high isomerization barrier of 43.6 kcal mol^-1 calculated by density functional theory. The monomer BPP and dimer BBPP are characterized by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results indicate that both BPP and BBPP fluoresce from a formally dark S₁ electronic state that is enabled by Herzberg-Teller intensity borrowing from a neighboring bright S₂ state. While BPP exhibits a relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), BBPP exhibits a significantly enhanced PLQY due to a greater S₂ intensity borrowing. Moreover, symmetry-breaking charge transfer in BBPP is demonstrated by spectroscopic investigations in solvents of different polarity. This suggests high potential for singlet fission in such π-extended biaryls through appropriate molecular design.

GronOR: Scalable and Accelerated Nonorthogonal Configuration Interaction for Molecular Fragment Wave Functions

GronOR is a program package for nonorthogonal configuration interaction calculations. Electronic wave functions are constructed in terms of antisymmetrized products of multiconfiguration molecular fragment wave functions. The computational complexity of the nonorthogonal methodologies implemented in GronOR applied to large molecular assemblies requires a design that takes full advantage of massively parallel supercomputer architectures and accelerator technologies. This work describes the implementation strategy and resulting performance characteristics. In addition to parallelization and acceleration, the software development strategy includes aspects of fault resiliency and heterogeneous computing. The program was designed for large-scale supercomputers but also runs effectively on small clusters and workstations for small molecular systems. GronOR is available as open source to the scientific community.

Modeling radiative and non-radiative pathways at both the Franck-Condon and Herzberg-Teller approximation level

Here, we present a concise model that can predict the photoluminescent properties of a given compound from first principles, both within and beyond the Franck-Condon approximation. The formalism required to compute fluorescence, Internal Conversion (IC), and Inter-System Crossing (ISC) is discussed. The IC mechanism, in particular, is a difficult pathway to compute due to difficulties associated with the computation of required bosonic configurations and non-adiabatic coupling elements. Here, we offer a discussion and breakdown on how to model these pathways at the Density Functional Theory (DFT) level with respect to its computational implementation, strengths, and current limitations. The model is then used to compute the photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of a number of small but important compounds: anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP), and Perylene Diimide (PDI) within a polarizable continuum model. Rate constants for fluorescence, IC, and ISC compare well for the most part with respect to experiment, despite triplet energies being overestimated to a degree. The resulting PLQYs are promising with respect to the level of theory being DFT. While we obtained a positive result for PDI within the Franck-Condon limit, the other systems require a second order correction. Recomputing quantum yields with Herzberg-Teller terms yields PLQYs of 0.19, 0.08, 0.04, 0.70, and 0.99 for anthracene, tetracene, pentacene, DPP, and PDI, respectively. Based on these results, we are confident that the presented methodology is sound with respect to the level of quantum chemistry and presents an important stepping stone in the search for a tool to predict the properties of larger coupled systems.

Pushing the Limits of the Donor-Acceptor Copolymer Strategy for Intramolecular Singlet Fission

Donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers have shown great potential for intramolecular singlet fission (iSF). Nonetheless, very few design principles exist for optimizing these systems for iSF, with very little knowledge about how to engineer them for this purpose. In recent work, a fundamental trade-off between the main electronic ingredients required for iSF capable D-A coplanar copolymers was revealed. Still, further investigations are needed to understand these limitations and learn how to bypass them. In this work, we propose to induce torsion as an effective way to circumvent the limits of the coplanar approach. We disclose the potential of noncoplanar copolymers with inherently low triplet energies that encompass all the characteristics required for iSF beyond the limiting values associated with fully coplanar systems. Our findings shed some light on the electronic structure aspects of D-A copolymers for iSF and offer a new avenue for the rational design of novel promising candidates.

Excitonic and charge transfer interactions in tetracene stacked and T-shaped dimers

Extended quantum chemical calculations were performed for the tetracene dimer to provide benchmark results, analyze the excimer survival process, and explore the possibility of using long-range-corrected (LC) time-dependent second-order density functional tight-biding (DFTB2) for this system. Ground- and first-excited-state optimized geometries, vertical excitations at relevant minima, and intermonomer displacement potential energy curves (PECs) were calculated for these purposes. Ground-state geometries were optimized with the scaled-opposite-spin (SOS) second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory and LC-DFT (density functional theory) and LC-DFTB2 levels. Excited-state geometries were optimized with SOS-ADC(2) (algebraic diagrammatic construction to second-order) and the time-dependent approaches for the latter two methods. Vertical excitations and PECs were compared to multireference configuration interaction DFT (DFT/MRCI). All methods predict the lowest-energy S₀ conformer to have monomers parallel and rotated relative to each other and the lowest S₁ conformer to be of a displaced-stacked type. LC-DFTB2, however, presents some relevant differences regarding other conformers for S₀. Despite some state-order inversions, overall good agreement between methods was observed in the spectral shape, state character, and PECs. Nevertheless, DFT/MRCI predicts that the S₁ state should acquire a doubly excited-state character relevant to the excimer survival process and, therefore, cannot be completely described by the single reference methods used in this work. PECs also revealed an interesting relation between dissociation energies and the intermonomer charge-transfer interactions for some states.

Influence of the crystal packing in singlet fission: one step beyond the gas phase approximation

Singlet fission (SF), a multiexciton generation process, has been proposed as an alternative to enhance the performance of solar cells. The gas phase dimer model has shown its utility to study this process, but it does not always cover all the physics and the effect of the surrounding atoms has to be included in such cases. In this contribution, we explore the influence of crystal packing on the electronic couplings, and on the so-called exciton descriptors and electron–hole correlation plots. We have studied three tetracene dimers extracted from the crystal structure, as well as several dimers and trimers of the α and β polymorphs of 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF). These polymorphs show different SF yields. Our results highlight that the character of the excited states of tetracene depends on both the mutual disposition of molecules and inclusion of the environment. The latter does however not change significantly the interpretation of the SF mechanism in the studied systems. For DPBF, we establish how the excited state analysis is able to pinpoint differences between the polymorphs. We observe strongly bound correlated excitons in the β polymorph which might hinder the formation of the ¹TT state and, consequently, explain its low SF yield.
