Abstract
Concern about the harmful effects that ultraviolet (UV) rays have on the skin of people who are routinely exposed to solar radiation has driven the industry of skin protection creams, sunglasses and clothing. Spanish Navy personnel are subject to different levels of exposure depending on their rank and function. The objective of this research is to analyze the behavioral variables associated to the effects on the skin caused by UV rays, denoted by the combined effects of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity, on their decision to purchase and wear uniforms with UV protection. A confirmatory analysis using a structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed on a sample of 100 respondents. The model results revealed a strong mediating characteristic of the intention to use, variable associated with the exogenous variables. Attitude towards the use of clothing and social influence, as well as the exogenous variable clothing action planning, on the sun protective clothing use during tactical maneuvers. These relationships were significant with p-values close to zero. However, exogenous variables related to perceived susceptibility and perceived severity in exposure to sunlight did not represent a significant influence when mediated by self-efficacy in use. The results revealed the consequence of awareness about the importance of protecting oneself and the influence that usage habits can have on the military with respect to the decision to purchase uniforms with UV protection.

Abstract
Simple Summary Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in humans. This study aims to create a system for recognizing pigmented skin lesions by analyzing heterogeneous data based on a multimodal neural network. Fusing patient statistics and multidimensional visual data allows for finding additional links between dermoscopic images and medical diagnostic results, significantly improving neural network classification accuracy. The use by specialists of the proposed system of neural network recognition of pigmented skin lesions will enhance the efficiency of diagnosis compared to visual diagnostic methods. Abstract Today, skin cancer is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in the human body. Diagnosis of pigmented lesions is challenging even for experienced dermatologists due to the wide range of morphological manifestations. Artificial intelligence technologies are capable of equaling and even surpassing the capabilities of a dermatologist in terms of efficiency. The main problem of implementing intellectual analysis systems is low accuracy. One of the possible ways to increase this indicator is using stages of preliminary processing of visual data and the use of heterogeneous data. The article proposes a multimodal neural network system for identifying pigmented skin lesions with a preliminary identification, and removing hair from dermatoscopic images. The novelty of the proposed system lies in the joint use of the stage of preliminary cleaning of hair structures and a multimodal neural network system for the analysis of heterogeneous data. The accuracy of pigmented skin lesions recognition in 10 diagnostically significant categories in the proposed system was 83.6%. The use of the proposed system by dermatologists as an auxiliary diagnostic method will minimize the impact of the human factor, assist in making medical decisions, and expand the possibilities of early detection of skin cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer. Incidence is largely unknown because of incomplete, or lack of, registration in most countries. OBJECTIVES To assess current incidence rates and recent trends for BCC in the Swedish population. METHODS Patient- and tumour-related features of all histologically confirmed BCC tumours diagnosed in Sweden from 2004 to 2017 were extracted from the population-based Swedish BCC Registry. Incidence rates were standardized to the 2013 European Standard Population and trends were analysed using Poisson regression models. RESULTS Age-standardized person-based incidence rate of BCC in Sweden in 2017 was 405/100 000, rising from 308/100 000 in 2004, corresponding to an annual relative increase of 1.8% (women, 2.1%; men, 1.4%). Incidence was highest in the elderly and the most common tumour site was the head and neck. In 2017, the most common BCC subtypes were nodular and micronodular/infiltrative BCC (each 31%). Incidence of aggressive BCC subtypes increased faster than other subtypes. CONCLUSIONS BCC incidence rates in Sweden are relatively high and increasing. The increasing trends were more pronounced in women and for aggressive BCC subtypes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sporotrichosis is the most common and least severe of deep mycoses. This disease has varied clinic presentation as well as several differential diagnosis. METHODS A cross-sectional and retrospective, individually based, observational study, based on records from the dermatopathology service of a university hospital in Brazil. A total of 175 patients were identified with clinical suspicion of sporotrichosis, from 2009 to 2017. Statistical analysis using prevalence ratios was conducted to characterize the clinicopathologic and epidemiological aspects. RESULTS The disease was suspected in 175 patients given the clinical presentation. Of these, 86 cases (49.14%) were sporotrichosis, 39 (22.29%) chronic granulomatous inflammatory processes of unidentified etiology, and 5 squamous cell carcinomas (2.86%). The majority of cases (52 or 60.46%) occurred in the upper limbs. A total of 40 samples presented a suppurative chronic granulomatous inflammatory process (46.51%). Only 5 samples (12.50%) showed positive staining (periodic-Schiff acid or GROCOTT). CONCLUSIONS The sporotrichosis cases underwent both cumulative and linear growth, especially in the group above 60 years. Squamous cell carcinomas appeared several times as a misdiagnosis of sporotrichosis by dermatologists, so it should be considered as an important differential diagnose due to the current context of skin cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The worldwide incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is increasing. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the tumour burden of in situ and invasive cSCC in Iceland, where the population is exposed to limited ultraviolet radiation. METHODS This whole-population study used the Icelandic Cancer Registry, which contains records of all in situ and invasive cSCC cases from 1981 to 2017. Incidence of cSCC was evaluated according to age, anatomical location, residence and multiplicity, and trends were assessed using joinpoint analysis. Age-standardized rates (WSR) and age-specific incidence rates per 100 000 person-years were calculated, along with cumulative and lifetime risks. RESULTS Between 1981 and 2017, in situ cSCC WSR increased from 1·2 to 19·1 for men and from 2·0 to 22·3 for women. Invasive cSCC WSR rose from 4·6 to 14 for men and from 0·3 to 13·2 for women. The average number of in situ cSCC lesions was 1·71 per woman and 1·39 per man. Women developed more in situ cSCCs than invasive cSCCs in almost all anatomical locations, whereas men developed more invasive cSCCs, mostly on the head and neck. The rates of in situ cSCC were higher in Reykjavik compared with rural areas. Furthermore, women more commonly developed multiple in situ lesions. For lip cSCCs, invasive lesions occurred more frequently than in situ lesions among both sexes. Joinpoint analysis showed that in situ cSCC in women exhibited the most rapid incidence increase. CONCLUSIONS cSCC has become an increasingly significant public health problem in Iceland. Tanning bed use and travelling abroad may contribute to skin cancer development. Public health efforts are needed to stem the behaviours leading to this rapid rise in cSCC.

Abstract
To assess the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on the occurrence of skin cancer in the population living in the province of Ferrara, Italy, a retrospective cohort of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or malignant melanoma (MM), provided by the local cancer registry, was investigated. The SES was expressed through an ecological-based deprivation index. During the 8-year study period (2006-2013, total person-years 2 859 137), 6051 carcinomas (1535 SCCs, 4365 BCCs) and 459 MMs were diagnosed. Both crude and standardized (on the European population) rates and the standardized incidence ratio showed a direct correlation between BCC and SES. Multivariate analysis confirmed these results for BCC and also for MM, while it showed an excess of SCC incidence in the lowest SES subgroup. This study shows, for the first time, to our knowledge, opposite effects of SES on SCC and BCC occurrence. A role of environmental factors conditioned by SES may be hypothesized.

Abstract
An interesting clinical feature of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin is a marked variation in tumor number, sites, and accrual. Some individuals develop only a single BCC lesion with no impact on health status, while a significant proportion is affected repeatedly with new primary tumors at various body sites. Approximately 29% of patients with a first BCC will develop at least 1 more lesion during their lifetime. The candidate predictors for multiple BCC development include younger age and a superficial BCC subtype at the time of the first diagnosis, red hair phenotype, initial or frequent tumor location on the trunk or on the upper limbs, and male gender. The pathogenesis of multiple BCC development does not seem to be related to greater UVR exposure. Individual genetic susceptibility may have a greater impact than extrinsic factors. In clinical practice, it is meaningful to estimate the probability of new BCC development in patients who have an initial lesion. A reliable prediction model for individualized risk stratification remains a subject of continued research; however, a focus on the risk factor profile is beneficial for clinical screening and may help clinicians to determine the individuals who should be followed up more closely.

Abstract
The skin is the outermost layer of the body with an extensive surface area of approximately 1·8 m2 , and is the first line of defence against a multitude of external pathogens and environmental insults. The skin also has important homeostatic functions such as reducing water loss and contributing to thermoregulation of the body. The structure of the skin and its cellular composition work in harmony to prevent infections and to deal with physical and chemical challenges from the outside world. In this review, we discuss how the structural cells such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts and adipocytes contribute to barrier immunity. We also discuss specialized immune cells that are resident in steady-state skin including mononuclear phagocytes, such as Langerhans cells, dermal macrophages and dermal dendritic cells in addition to the resident memory T cells. Ageing results in an increased incidence of cancer and skin infections. As we age, the skin structure changes with thinning of the epidermis and dermis, increased water loss, and fragmentation of collagen and elastin. In addition, the skin immune composition is altered with reduced Langerhans cells, decreased antigen-specific immunity and increased regulatory populations such as Foxp3+ regulatory T cells. Together, these alterations result in decreased barrier immunity in the elderly, explaining in part their increased susceptiblity to cancer and infections.

Abstract
AIMS We report on the incidence of cutaneous eyelid tumours in Ireland over the 11-year-period from 2005 to 2015, we identify associations between demographic factors and cutaneous eyelid tumour risk. METHODS Skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma, and other cancers, located on the eyelid or canthus according to ICD-10 coding, as registered by the National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI), were captured from the period 2005 to 2015. Age standardised rates (ASR) were calculated according to the European Standard Population (2013). Longitudinal data analysis using linear regression, and associations with age and sex were evaluated with the statistics program R. RESULTS There were 4824 patients diagnosed with eyelid BCC during the study period, the ASR in men and women was mean 15.87 and 13.49 per 100,00, respectively. The relative risk for eyelid BCC in men compared with women was 1.18, age was associated with incidence. There were 528 patients diagnosed with SCC; the ASR of eyelid SCC in men and women was 2.10 and 1.39 per 100,000, respectively, and increased in women annually (β = 0.07, p = 0.0005). The relative risk for eyelid SCC in men compared with women was 1.51, and age was exponentially associated with SCC. Melanoma and other eyelid tumours were uncommon-50 and 55 cases, respectively. CONCLUSION Incidence of both BCC and SCC increases with age and male sex. The incidence of eyelid SCC is increasing in women, and under age 50, eyelid BCC is more common in women than men. SYNOPSIS We describe the recent incidence of eyelid cancers in Ireland, from National Cancer Registry Data. We find eyelid BCC, and also SCC, are associated with increased age. Rate of eyelid SCC is increasing in women.

Abstract
We conducted a retrospective study aiming to assess the risk, and associated risk factors, of developing subsequent skin cancers after having a first diagnosis of skin cancer. We included all patients with biopsy-proven skin cancer attending a dermatology clinic between July 2007 and July 2017. We assessed the frequency of new skin cancers, as well as potential demographic and clinical factors significantly associated with occurrence of such neoplasms, that were identified by means of a survival analysis. We analyzed 969 patients with a total of 1584 skin neoplasms (1122 basal cell carcinomas (BCC), 310 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), 143 melanomas and 9 other neoplasms). 165 patients (17.0%) developed subsequent skin neoplasms. Factors identified in multivariable models to be significantly associated with development of new skin cancers included older age (adjusted HR = 1.04 per year; 95%CI = 1.02-1.05; p < 0.001), and presence of synchronous neoplasms (adjusted HR = 2.25; 95%CI = 1.61-3.14; p < 0.001). Having a history of a BCC was significantly associated with development of new BCC (adjusted HR = 1.63; 95%CI = 1.05-2.54; p = 0.030), while having a previous SCC was associated with occurrence of subsequent SCC (adjusted HR = 3.60; 95%CI = 1.93-6.72; p < 0.001). These findings point to the importance of careful follow-up (e.g., skin self-examination and full body examination) of skin cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin cancer is an important health concern, with an increasing incidence worldwide. OBJECTIVE To assess the clinical and economic burden of melanoma (MM) and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) at public hospitals in mainland Portugal. METHODS We used an administrative database containing a registration of all hospitalizations and ambulatory episodes occurred in Portuguese public hospitals between 2011 and 2015. We assessed all episodes with associated diagnoses of MM or NMSC regarding neoplasm location, metastases occurrence, length of stay, in-hospital mortality and hospital costs. RESULTS We assessed 15,913 MM and 72,602 NMSC episodes. 14.3% of MM episodes presented with metastases, compared to 1.9% of NMSC episodes. Patients' median age was lower for MM (66 years) than NMSC (76 years). The trunk was the most common location for MM (32.5%), followed by the lower limbs (26.5%). NMSC presented with higher length of stay than MM (median 5 versus 4 days; p < 0.001), but with lower in-hospital mortality (7.3% versus 11.9%; p < 0.001). MM episodes had higher average hospital costs than NMSC episodes (1197.7 versus 1113.5 €; p < 0.001). Overall, NMSC episodes amounted a total of 80.8 million € in hospital costs versus 19.1 million € for MM episodes. CONCLUSION Skin neoplasms have substantial impact on healthcare services. NMSC is an important contributor to this burden. NMSC underreporting should be tackled and it should not be downplayed in skin cancer preventative strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous melanoma accounts for up to 80% of deaths caused by skin cancer. Diagnostic suspicion and access to medical care and early intervention in suspected cases is vital to the patient's prognosis. OBJECTIVES To compare demographic and histopathological characteristics of primary cutaneous melanoma diagnosed in the public healthcare system (Sistema Único de Saúde SUS) and the private system in Joinville, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. METHODS This cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed primary cutaneous melanoma cases recorded from 2003 to 2014 in the resident population of Joinville. Ethical approval was obtained from the local Research Ethics Committee. RESULTS 893 cases of primary cutaneous melanoma were identified. Patients in the private system were mostly younger, while there were more elderly patients in the public healthcare system (p <0.001). There was no statistically significant association between type of care (public/private) and gender or presence of multiple primary cutaneous melanomas. Histological diagnosis of superficial spreading melanoma was more common in patients treated in private healthcare, while nodular melanoma was more frequent in patients in the public healthcare system (p <0.001). Mean Breslow depth in patients treated in private healthcare was 1.35mm, compared to 2.72mm in the public system (p <0.001). STUDY LIMITATIONS This was a retrospective study using secondary databases. CONCLUSIONS thin cutaneous melanoma (in situ cutaneous melanoma and Breslow T1) showed the strongest association with the private healthcare system, while thick cutaneous melanoma was more frequent in the public system (Breslow category T3 and T4) (p <0.001).

Abstract
Understanding the effects of age on the epidemiology of diseases primarily affecting the skin is important to the practice of dermatology, both for proper allocation of resources and for optimal patient-centered care. To fully appreciate the effect that age may have on the population-based calculations of incidence of diseases primarily affecting the skin in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and worldwide, we performed a review of all relevant Rochester Epidemiology Project-published data and compared them to similar reports in the worldwide English literature. Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project, population-based epidemiologic studies have been performed to estimate the incidence of specific skin diseases over the past 50 years. In older persons (>65 years), nonmelanoma skin cancer, lentigo maligna, herpes zoster, delusional infestation, venous stasis syndrome, venous ulcer, and burning mouth syndrome were more commonly diagnosed. In those younger than 65 years, atypical nevi, psoriatic arthritis, pityriasis rosea, herpes progenitalis, genital warts, alopecia areata, hidradenitis suppurativa, infantile hemangioma, Behçet's disease, and sarcoidosis (isolated cutaneous, with sarcoidosis-specific cutaneous lesions and with erythema nodosum) had a higher incidence. Many of the incidence rates by age group of diseases primarily affecting the skin derived from the Rochester Epidemiology Project were similar to those reported elsewhere.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The recent discovery of the Merkel cell polyomavirus and its consistent association with Merkel cell carcinoma has drawn attention to the numerous recently discovered polyomaviruses and their possible involvement in the etiopathogenesis of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Data on the recently discovered human polyomavirus 6 (HPyV6) and its role in NMSC are sparse and in part controversial. METHODS In the present study we tested a large number (n = 299) of NMSC specimens for the presence of human polyomavirus 6 (HPyV6) by DNA PCR and HPyV6 fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In detail, 59 keratoacanthomas (KA), 109 basal cell carcinomas (BCC), 86 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and 45 trichoblastomas (TB) were tested for the presence of HPyV6. RESULTS HPyV6 DNA PCR and subsequent sequence analysis revealed that 25 KAs (42.3 %), 23 BCCs (21.1 %), 8 SCCs (9.3 %) and 10 TBs (22.2 %) were HPyV6 positive. The presence of HPyV6 DNA was visualized and validated on the single cell level within the histomorphological context by HPyV6 fluorescence in situ hybridization. CONCLUSIONS The high frequency of HPyV6 DNA in 42.3 % of KA possibly points to a role for HPyV6 in the etiopathogenesis of KAs. Although the detection rate of HPyV6 DNA in BCCs and TBs is within the previously reported detection range in normal skin, it does not exclude a possible role for HPyV6 in the carcinogenesis in a significant subset of these skin tumors.

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer worldwide with increasing incidence, but difficult to assess due to the current under registration practice. Despite the low mortality rate, BCC is a cause of great morbidity and an economic burden to health services. There are several risk factors that increase the risk of BCC and partly explain its incidence. Low-penetrance susceptibility alleles, as well as genetic alterations in signaling pathways, namely SHH pathway, also contribute to the carcinogenesis. BCC associate with several genetic syndromes, of which basal cell nevus syndrome is the most common.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a promising tool for real-time clinical diagnosis of malignant skin tumors offering a number of potential advantages: it is non-intrusive, it requires no sample preparation, and it features high chemical specificity with minimal water interference. However, in vivo tissue evaluation and accurate histopathological classification remain a challenging task for the successful transition from laboratory prototypes to clinical devices. In the literature, there are numerous reports on the applications of Raman spectroscopy to biomedical research and cancer diagnostics. Nevertheless, cases where real-time, portable instrumentations have been employed for the in vivo evaluation of skin lesions are scarce, despite their advantages in use as medical devices in the clinical setting. This paper reviews the advances in real-time Raman spectroscopy for the in vivo characterization of common skin lesions. The translational momentum of Raman spectroscopy towards the clinical practice is revealed by (i) assembling the technical specifications of portable systems and (ii) analyzing the spectral characteristics of in vivo measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the costs of the surgical treatment of cutaneous carcinomas held in the Plastic Surgery service at a university hospital in patients of the Unified Health System (SUS). METHODS we included seventy-one patients recorded their demographic and operation data. For analysis of direct costs we considered the period of patient hospitalization, including human and material costs. RESULTS The average equipment cost per procedure was R$ 324.70, and the mean cost of hospital service, according to the table of SUS, was R$ 193.66. Thus, we obtained an average total cost of R$ 518.36 per procedure. However, the average amount refunded by the SUS per hospital procedure was R$ 429.19. CONCLUSION Surgical treatment of cutaneous carcinomas generated for the hospital an average deficit of R$ 89.16 per procedure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of UV-induced actinic keratosis and further skin lesions. A newly developed questionnaire about lifetime UV radiation exposure was completed by 514 seafarers. An experienced dermatologist inspected the whole-body skin status of all participants. The questionnaire revealed a pre-employment UV radiation exposure in 104 seafarers, sunbed use in 26 subjects and a median work-related UV radiation exposure at sea of 20 years. The diagnosis of actinic keratoses was made in 94 seafarers and the clinical diagnosis of skin cancers in 48 seafarers (28 basal cell carcinoma, 11 squamous cell carcinoma, 9 malignant melanoma). After age standardisation according to a European reference population, the male European seafarers in this study had a 1.80-fold increased risk of actinic keratosis. Actinic keratoses [OR 1.03 (1.01-1.05)] and squamous cell carcinoma [OR 1.07 (1.01-1.13)] were related to the duration of seafaring time in years. A significant association was also found between actinic keratosis/squamous cell carcinoma and sunlight exposure during home leave [OR 1.67 (1.03-2.81) and OR 6.19 (1.18-32.40)]. Furthermore, the engine room personnel-especially the technical officers-were at higher risk of developing actinic keratosis. Due to the high prevalence of actinic keratosis especially among older seafarers with fair skin, with longer duration of seafaring employment at sea and with higher UV exposure during home leave, more intensive advice should be given on sun protection both at sea and ashore.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common cancer affecting white-skinned individuals and the incidence is increasing worldwide. OBJECTIVES This systematic review brings together 75 studies conducted over the past half century to look at geographical variations and trends worldwide in NMSC, and specifically incidence data are compared with recent U.K. cancer registry data. METHODS Following the development of a comprehensive search strategy, an assessment tool was adapted to look at the methodological quality of the eligible studies. RESULTS Most of the studies focused on white populations in Europe, the U.S.A. and Australia; however, limited data were available for other skin types in regions such as Africa. Worldwide the incidence for NMSC varies widely with the highest rates in Australia [>1000/100, 000 person-years for basal cell carcinoma (BCC)] and the lowest rates in parts of Africa (< 1/100, 000 person-years for BCC). The average incidence rates in England were 76·21/100, 000 person-years and 22·65/100, 000 person-years for BCC and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), respectively, with highest rates in the South-West of England (121·29/100, 000 person-years for BCC and 33·02/100, 000 person-years for SCC) and lowest rates by far in London (0·24/100, 000 person-years for BCC and 14·98/100, 000 person-years for SCC). The incidence rates in the U.K. appear to be increasing at a greater rate when compared with the rest of Europe. CONCLUSIONS NMSC is an increasing problem for health care services worldwide. This review highlights a requirement for prevention studies in this area and the issues surrounding incomplete NMSC registration. Registration standards of NMSC should be improved to the level of other invasive disease.

Abstract
The incidence of basal cell carcinoma is increasing worldwide. An ecological study was conducted using the pathology reports from 5169 cases of basal cell carcinoma diagnosed at the Botucatu School of Medicine, Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) between January 1999 and December 2009. The mean increase in the incidence of basal cell carcinoma over this period was 90.6%, suggesting that one case of basal cell carcinoma could be expected for every 15 patients referred to dermatology. This trend was also found when the incidence was indexed according to the absolute number of histopathology exams, the total number of hospital consultations, the total number of dermatological consultations and the population of the town of Botucatu.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infection with human papillomaviruses (HPVs) is a risk factor for several epithelial cancers, but its relationship with keratinocyte tumours has not yet been established. Objective In this prospective study we investigated the possible role of different HPVs in the incidence of a subsequent nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). METHODS One hundred and fifty-three patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) enrolled in a previous case-control study were re-contacted, and a follow-up visit was offered. Demographic and clinical data, date of first NMSC presentation, Fitzpatrick skin type and history of NMSC during the follow-up period were ascertained. Recurrences and new second cancers were considered together as 'outcomes' in time-to-event analyses and in Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS Clinical data were obtained in 107 patients. HPV seropositivity at baseline was strongly associated with the risk of developing a second SCC after 5 years for a number of beta and gamma HPV types. For example, HPV-24-seropositive patients with an SCC at baseline had a 4-fold increased risk of developing a subsequent SCC (hazard ratio 4·35, 95% confidence interval 1·2-15·6, P = 0·024). No association between serological status for any HPV type tested and an increased risk of BCC was found. CONCLUSIONS We observed a consistent pattern of a positive association between seropositivity for beta and gamma HPV types and the risk of a subsequent SCC in patients with a previous SCC. Our data corroborate the results of previous case-control studies and may spur further prospective studies on the causal role of HPVs in NMSC.

Abstract
Background. Patients with epithelial ovarian cancer have a high risk of (non-)melanoma skin cancer. The association between histological variants of primary ovarian cancer and skin cancer is poorly documented. Objectives. To further evaluate the risk of skin cancer based on the histology of the epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods. A cross-sectional study within a large population-based dataset. Results. Skin cancer was found in 2.7% (95% CI: 2.3–3.1) of the 5366 individuals forming our dataset. The odds ratio (OR) for endometrioid cancer in the ovary to skin cancer in the under 50 age group was 8.9 (95% CI: 3.2–25.0). The OR decreased in older patients to 1.2. Conclusions. Patients with epithelial ovarian malignancies show an increased risk of skin cancer. A significantly increased risk (4.3%) for endometrioid ovarian cancer was found in the group aged under 50.

Abstract
Solvent extracts from the aerial and root parts and seed oil from E. sativa (rocket salad) were assayed for anticancer activity against melanoma cells. The seed oil (isothiocyanates rich) significantly (p<0.01) reduced the tumor growth comparable to the control. Remarkably, the seed oil inhibited melanoma growth and angiogenesis in mice without any major toxicity. The findings qualify seed oil for further investigations in the real of cancer prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer in white populations with an increasing incidence worldwide, thereby imposing an important public health problem. Its etiology is still unclear, but existing data indicate that the risk for BCC development is of multifactorial origin and results from the interplay of both constitutional and environmental factors. Yet, UV radiation (UVR) is believed to be the predominant causative risk factor in the pathogenesis of BCC. For years, BCC and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have been grouped together as "nonmelanoma skin cancer." However, it seems that there are considerable biologic differences between BCC and SCC, and thus each type of epithelial cancer should be addressed separately. The present review provides an overview of the intriguing etiologic link of BCC with UVR and attempts a comprehensive review of recent epidemiologic and molecular evidence that supports this association.

Abstract
Background: Non-melanoma skin cancer has been little studied in relation to deprivation. Methods: Incident cases diagnosed in 1978–2004 were extracted from the Scottish Cancer Register and assigned to quintiles of Carstairs deprivation scores. Age-standardised incidence rates (ASRs) (European standard population) were calculated by deprivation quintile, sex, period of diagnosis, for the three main types of skin cancer. Results and conclusion: As age-standardised incidence of each skin cancer increased significantly over time across all deprivation categories, rates were consistently highest in the least deprived quintile.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgery of limited metastatic lesions from malignant melanoma can achieve long-term remission and better survival than chemotherapy. Existing criteria for selection of candidate patients for this surgery do not seem sufficient to avoid useless excisions. OBJECTIVES To test use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy as a new criterion in this setting. METHODS All patients who underwent thoracic surgery for one or two lung metastases from melanoma during 1999-2007 were included in the study. Demographic and medical data were collected and analysed. Several possible prognostic factors were evaluated based on the overall survival curves. RESULTS Thirteen patients were included in this retrospective study. All but two patients had no evidence of disease after surgery. Ten patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Six responded (absence of progression) and four had progressive disease. Response to chemotherapy and no evidence of disease after surgery were predictive of long-term survival. CONCLUSIONS Neoadjuvant chemotherapy can be considered as a new criterion for better selection of candidate patients for lung metastasis surgical resection. This would also avoid useless surgical procedures in rapidly progressive disease and give information on the chemosensibility of the metastatic disease. This study needs further confirmation, particularly with chemotherapy regimens that have demonstrated better objective responses.

Whereas the role of cumulative sun exposure in pathogenesis of squamous-cell carcinoma seems clear, the relation between sun-exposure patterns and subtypes of basal-cell carcinoma remains undetermined. Several complex genotypic, phenotypic, and environmental factors contribute to pathogenesis of non-melanoma skin cancers. Unlike basal-cell carcinoma, squamous-cell carcinomas can arise from precursor lesions. Diagnosis of non-melanoma skin cancer is made clinically and confirmed by histological testing. Prognosis depends on lesion and host characteristics, which also dictate choice of treatment. Prevention strategies aim at reduction of sun exposure, but are of unproven benefit, especially for basal-cell carcinoma. Surgical excision with predetermined margins is the mainstay of treatment for squamous-cell carcinoma and for most basal-cell carcinomas. Of the new non-invasive treatments, only photodynamic therapy and topical imiquimod have become established treatments for specific subtypes of basal-cell carcinoma, and the search for more effective and tissue-salvaging therapies continues.
