Abstract
Both periodontitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are complex chronic conditions characterized by aberrant host immune response and dysregulated microbiota. Emerging data show an association between periodontitis and IBD, including direct and indirect mechanistic links between oral and intestinal inflammation. Direct pathways include translocation of proinflammatory microbes from the oral cavity to the gut and immune priming. Indirect pathways involve systemic immune activation with possible nonspecific effects on the gut. There are limited data on the effects of periodontal disease treatment on IBD course and vice versa, but early reports suggest that treatment of periodontitis decreases systemic immune activation and that treatment of IBD is associated with periodontitis healing, underscoring the importance of recognizing and treating both conditions.

Abstract
Humans have coevolved with the trillions of resident microbes that populate every nook and cranny of the body. At each site, the resident microbiota creates a unique ecosystem specialized to its environment, benefiting the development and maintenance of human physiology through harmonious symbiotic relationships with the host. However, when the resident microbiota is perturbed, significant complications may arise with disastrous consequences that affect the local and distant ecosystems. In this context, periodontal disease results in inflammation beyond the oral cavity, such as in the gastrointestinal tract. Accumulating evidence indicates that potentially harmful oral resident bacteria (referred to as pathobionts) and pathogenic immune cells in the oral mucosa can migrate to the lower gastrointestinal tract and contribute to intestinal inflammation. We will review the most recent advances concerning the periodontal connection with intestinal inflammation from microbiological and immunological perspectives. Potential therapeutic approaches that target the connection between the mouth and the gut to treat gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, will be examined. Deciphering the complex interplay between microbes and immunity along the mouth-gut axis will provide a better understanding of the pathogenesis of both oral and gut pathologies and present therapeutic opportunities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between oral health and Crohn's disease is uncertain. Previous studies have yielded contradictory results, reflecting perhaps the different phenotypes of the disease. The aim of the present study was to describe and analyse the dental status of a group of patients with Crohn's disease (CD), considering the positions of the inflammatory loci and disease phenotype. METHODS In total, 47 patients with Crohn's disease (18 males and 30 females; mean age. 48.7 years; range, 23-61 years) were consecutively recruited to this study. Interviews and clinical examinations were performed to assess dental status, medication, smoking history, heredity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), duration of disease, oral mucosal manifestations of Crohn's disease. Furthermore, data on subjective health assessments and family status, along with medical histories from the patients were obtained through questionnaires. The disease phenotypes were assessed and classified according to the Montreal classification. The data on oral health status were first correlated with the Montreal classifications of IBD, and, thereafter, all the collected data were included in a multivariate generalised linear model. RESULTS The dental status of the patients was comparable to that of the Swedish average. No statistically significant associations were found between oral status and the different CD phenotypes. However, within the Montreal classification, there were significantly fewer teeth in those patients with perianal lesions than in those without such lesions, and there was a significant correlation between deeper pocket depth and problems with strictures and penetrations. No significant differences (p = .074) between the patients with CD (N = 47) and controls (N = 38) were found regarding the presence of oral mucosal lesions. CONCLUSION Dental health may be adversely affected in severe cases of CD whereas most of the remaining patients with CD appear to have a level of dental health that is comparable to that in the general population.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic intestinal inflammatory disorders with a prolonged duration characterized by recurrent relapse and remission. The exact etiology of IBD remains poorly understood despite the identification of relevant risk factors, including individual genetic susceptibility, environmental triggers, and disruption of immune homeostasis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is believed to exacerbate the progression of IBD. Recently, increasing evidence has also linked oral microbiota dysbiosis with the development of IBD. On the one hand, IBD patients show significantly unbalanced composition and function of the oral microbiota known as dysbiosis. On the other, overabundances of oral commensal bacteria with opportunistic pathogenicity have been found in the gut microbiota of IBD patients. Herein, we review the current information on the causative factors of IBD, especially recent evidence of IBD-associated oral microbiota dysbiosis, which has seldom been covered in the previous literature review, highlighting the pathogenic mechanisms of specific oral bacteria in the development of IBD. Ectopic colonization of several oral bacteria, including a subset of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter concisus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, may lead to destruction of the intestinal epithelial barrier, excessive secretion of inflammatory cytokines, disruption of the host immune system, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota, consequently aggravating chronic intestinal inflammation. Studying oral microbiota dysbiosis may open future horizons for understanding IBD pathogenesis and provide novel biomarkers for IBD. This review also presents the current treatment and new perspectives for IBD treatment.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic disorders that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including the oral cavity. This systematic review was designed to answer the question “Is there a relationship between oral health status and inflammatory bowel diseases?”. Following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, fifteen studies were included (according to PRISMA statement guidelines). Due to their heterogeneity, only six articles about the prevalence of periodontal disease in IBD patients were included in the meta-analysis. Both Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients had an increased odds of periodontitis coincidence compared to the controls, more than 2- and 3-fold, respectively. Moreover, in most studies, patients with IBD were characterized by higher values of caries indices. In conclusion, despite the conducted systematic review, the risk of oral diseases in IBD patients cannot be clearly established due to the possible association of other factors, e.g., sociodemographic or environmental factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate and present evidence from animal and human clinical studies on associations between dental caries and systemic diseases, and to suggest potential mechanisms that might explain such associations. METHODS An electronic search was conducted of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for articles published from 2010 to 2020 in the English language. From the initial search, 404 full-text studies were assessed for eligibility. After excluding studies for technical and study limitations, a total of 67 studies were included in the summary tables and additional studies were included in the review to support evidence. RESULTS Few systemic disease and conditions were found to be clinically meaningfully associated with caries experience. Best evidence from human and animal studies described association between metabolic diseases and dental caries. Several interesting animal studies were noted that could generate clinical hypotheses and further investigations in rodent models for cardiovascular injury and hyperglycemia. Inadequate data was found to suggest any modifications to current clinical practice or prevention guidelines. CONCLUSIONS Limited clinical evidence was found connecting several systemic diseases and dental caries. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Understanding of associations between dental caries and systemic diseases play a crucial role in the treatment planning and education of the dental patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present review aimed to systematically evaluate the occurrence of caries in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), either Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC), compared to healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Google Scholar, LILACS, and Cochrane Library electronic databases were screened. Caries experience was measured through the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index. The weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval was calculated between IBD patients and healthy controls. RESULTS Six studies were selected for the inclusion in the systematic review, 5 of which were also included in the quantitative synthesis of data. The WMD in the DMFT index between IBD and healthy subjects was 3.04 (1.52, 4.56) (p = 0.10). Subgroup analysis showed no difference (p = 0.31) between CD (2.52 [0.54, 4.49]) and UC (4.01 [1.52, 4.56]) subjects. CONCLUSIONS There is a remarkably higher past and present occurrence of dental caries in subjects with IBD than healthy controls. This result should encourage clinicians to include oral health preventive programs in the overall treatment plan of IBD patients.

Abstract
Introduction: An increased risk of dental caries and periodontal diseases has been reported for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients and are challenging conditions to manage.Areas covered: The authors searched international databases to find all studies assessing dental/periodontal outcomes in patients with IBD and other immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID), as well as the association between IMID medications and dental/periodontal status.Expert opinion: IBD are associated with a higher risk of both periodontitis and caries. Some evidence from rheumatoid arthritis suggests that periodontitis may be associated with a lower response to anti-TNF. There is no reliable evidence that IBD patients may be at greater risk of complications during routine dental care. On the basis of current data, guidelines can be proposed for the dental management focusing on the detection and eradication of infectious foci prior to the implementation of immunosuppressants/biologics and modified dental treatment protocol for invasive dental procedures that includes antibiotic prophylaxis.

Abstract
Objectives Although bowel symptoms are often predominant, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients can have several oral manifestations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to an age and gender-matched control group of patients without IBD. Material and methods The DMFT (Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth) scores and the DPSI (Dutch Periodontal Screening Index) of 229 IBD patients were retrieved from the electronic health record patient database axiUm at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) and were compared to the DMFT scores and DPSI from age and gender-matched non-IBD patients from the same database. Results The total DMFT index was significantly higher in the IBD group compared to the control group. When CD and UC were analyzed separately, a statistically significant increased DMFT index was observed in CD patients but not in UC patients. The DPSI did not differ significantly between the IBD and non-IBD groups for each of the sextants. However, in every sextant, IBD patients were more frequently edentulous compared to the control patients. Conclusion CD patients have significantly more dental health problems compared to a control group. Periodontal disease did not differ significantly between IBD and non-IBD groups as determined by the DPSI. Clinical relevance It is important that IBD patients and physicians are instructed about the correlation between their disease and oral health problems. Strict oral hygiene and preventive dental care such as more frequent checkups should be emphasized by dental clinicians.

Abstract
Crohn's disease (CD) is a granulomatous inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, but its etiology is still unclear. CD patients usually have extraintestinal manifestations including oral manifestations, and this can also occasionally appear in children. Oral manifestations, including aphthous stomatitis, typically develop on the mucocutaneous tissue. As pediatric CD is not common, there have been no reports concerning alveolar bone resorption for these kinds of patients. An 11-year-old Chinese girl was referred to our hospital because of reoccurring painful oral ulcers, with a 2.5-year history of CD and recurrent oral ulcers. Clinical examinations revealed intestinal lesions, oral ulcers, and alveolar bone loss. CD and its related periodontitis were diagnosed. After comprehensive therapy, including periodontal scaling and anti-inflammatory treatment, the oral ulcers gradually healed. One year later, follow-up visit showed the anterior alveolar bone to be stable and new alveolar bone regenerating around the mandibular anterior teeth at some sites. It is rare for CD children to have periodontitis, especially with severe alveolar bone loss. This case suggests that when treating periodontitis in children, the possibility of systemic disease, such as CD, should be considered and attended to. Early diagnosis and symptomatic treatment and care are crucial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE SLC22A4/5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to affect inflammatory diseases. We report the relationship of these polymorphisms with adiposity and tooth loss as elucidated in a 10-year follow-up study. METHODS Participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP, N = 4105) were genotyped for the polymorphisms c.1507C > T in SLC22A4 (rs1050152) and -207C > G in SLC22A5 (rs2631367) using allele-specific real-time PCR assays. A total of 1817 subjects, 934 female and 883 male aged 30-80 years, underwent follow-up 10 years later (SHIP-2) and were assessed for adiposity and tooth loss. RESULTS The frequencies of the rarer SLC22A4 TT and SLC22A5 CC alleles were 16.7% and 20.3%, respectively. In women, tooth loss was associated with genotype TT vs. CC with incidence rate ratio IRR = 0.74 (95%C.I. 0.60-0.92) and CC vs. GG IRR = 0.79 (0.65-0.96) for SLC22A4 and SLC22A5 SNPs, respectively. In men, no such associations were observed. In the follow-up examination, the relationship between tooth loss and these SNPs was in parallel with measures of body shape such as BMI, body weight, waist circumference, or body fat accumulation. The association between muscle strength and body fat mass was modified by the genotypes studied. CONCLUSIONS SLC22A4 c.150C > T and SLC22A5 -207C > G polymorphisms are associated with tooth loss and markers of body shape in women but not in men. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Tooth loss may be related to obesity beyond inflammatory mechanisms, conceivably with a genetic background.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk of developing oral health problems. The aim of this study was to investigate whether oral diseases in these patients are related to inflammation of the intestine and if there is a correlation between inflammatory bowel disease-specific health-related quality of life (IBD-HR-QOL) and oral health problems. STUDY DESIGN The study was a cross-sectional survey and analysis of self-reported oral health of individuals with a stoma for Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and treated colon cancer (CC). Validated international questionnaires were sent to members of the Stoma Federation of The Netherlands. Because there was an unequal distribution of male and female patients with CD and CC, data of 169 age-matched female patients with CD, UC, and CC with a stoma were analyzed. RESULTS Patients with CD had significantly more oral health problems compared with those with UC or CC. Patients with CD and UC both had significantly more gingival-related problems compared with patients with CC. There was a significant negative correlation between IBD-HR-QOL and oral health problems. CONCLUSIONS In the 3 distinguishable groups of patients with a stoma, patients with CD had an increased risk for oral health problems, independently from surgical removal of (a part of) the inflamed intestine, suggesting a general increased susceptibility of patients with CD for oral health problems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may be associated with oral diseases, but few relevant studies have been reported in China. This study aimed to compare the prevalence, severity and extent of dental caries and periodontal disease in Chinese IBD patients and healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, questionnaires and oral examinations were completed for 389 IBD patients [265 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 124 with ulcerative colitis (UC)] and 265 healthy controls based on the established criteria of the World Health Organization. Tobit regression, multiple linear regression and logistic regression were performed to analyse the data. RESULTS After adjusting for confounders, the decayed, missing and filled surfaces indices were significantly increased in the CD and UC patients compared with those in the controls (P < 0.001). Patients with CD [odds ratio (OR) = 4.27, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 2.63-6.95, P < 0.001] and UC (OR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.24-3.94, P = 0.007) had significantly higher risks of dental caries than controls. Significantly higher percentages of sites with probing pocket depth ≥ 5 mm and clinical attachment loss ≥ 4 mm were observed in CD and UC patients compared with controls (P < 0.001). A fully adjusted model revealed that CD and UC were risk indicators for periodontitis (OR = 4.46, 95% CI: 2.50-7.95, P < 0.001; OR = 4.66, 95% CI: 2.49-8.71, P < 0.001, respectively). No significant differences in dental caries and periodontal disease were observed between the CD and UC patients. CONCLUSIONS Chinese IBD patients have a higher prevalence, severity and extent of dental caries and/or periodontal disease than controls, and require oral health education and multidisciplinary treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High prevalence of dental caries in ulcerative colitis (UC) has been attributed to diet and changes in salivary environment. OBJECTIVE We aimed to characterize the prevalence of dental caries, salivary flow rates, salivary buffering capacity and cariogenic bacteria counts of Mutans streptococci and Lactobacillus spp and to evaluate their relationship with drug therapy, disease activity and duration. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed with UC patients followed in a tertiary center. Participants were submitted to a questionnaire (including demographic data, oral hygiene, eating habits) and a clinical observation with assessment of plaque index and Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth index. Unstimulated/stimulated saliva was collected. Medical records, disease activity (Partial Mayo Score) and disease duration were collected. Laboratory data included salivary flow rates, salivary buffering capacity (CRT® buffer) and cariogenic bacteria count (Mutans streptococci and Lactobacillus spp) in saliva using the CRT® bacteria test (results: high or low counts). RESULTS Thirty UC patients were recruited. Oral hygiene routines were daily teeth brushing once or more (96.7%) and fluoride toothpaste (73.3%). Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth index (mean 16.17±6.428) was not affected by the frequency of soft drinks, cakes, sweets and sugars between meals (P>0.2). Long-term disease showed a trend towards higher prevalence of caries (P=0.06). Most presented normal salivary flow rates, unstimulated (73.3%) and stimulated (60.0%), and high salivary buffering capacity (66.7%). Any association was found with age, gender, disease activity, disease duration and drug therapy. High Mutans streptococci and low Lactobacillus spp count were observed in 73.3% and 60% of patients, respectively. Patients with active disease (100%) and longer duration (88.9%) displayed higher Mutans streptococci count. CONCLUSION The prevalence of dental caries observed in UC patients was significant and did not seem to be influenced by their eating habits. The high prevalence of Mutans streptococci count may be a major risk factor for dental caries and may be looked as part of the UC dysbiosis. Dental care of UC patients should be planned according with this microbiota variation.

Abstract
Background: Extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are widely studied. Oral manifestations are manifold, miscellaneous, and hardly detected by general practitioners and gastroenterologists. Objectives: The main purpose of this systematic review is to find all the possible correlations between inflammatory bowel disease and the oral cavity in order to underline the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation with dental care providers, and to secure better treatments for patients. Materials and methods: Articles were searched up to June 2019 through Ebsco’s, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases. The search terms included IBD, oral manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, oral manifestations of Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis, an extra-intestinal manifestation of IBD, oral Crohn’s disease, and paediatric inflammatory bowel disease. Discussion: The prevalence of the oral manifestation of IBD ranges from 0.7% to 37% in adults and from about 7% to 23% in children. They can be divided into specific manifestations (cobblestoning mucosa, mucosal tags, cheilitis granulomatosa, pyostomatitis vegetans) and nonspecific manifestations (halitosis, dysphagia, aphthous ulcerations, deep oral fissuring, cheilitis angularis, taste changes, lichen planus). Moreover, the link between IBD and the higher prevalence of dental caries and periodontitis have also been studied. Conclusions: The presence of oral manifestations that precede or follow intestinal symptoms of IBD, must be taken into serious consideration from both gastroenterologists and dentists in order to allow for early diagnosis and improve patients’ quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between periodontitis, dental scaling (DS) and pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs). MATERIAL AND METHODS A nationwide population-based case-control study was applied using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. We identified and enrolled 691 PLA patients, who were individually matched by age and sex to 2764 controls. RESULTS Conditional logistic regression was applied to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) in patients with exposure to periodontitis and DS before PLA. After adjusting for other confounding factors, periodontitis remained a risk factor for PLA among patients aged 20-40 years, with an aOR of 2.31 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.37-3.90, P = .0018). In addition, the average aOR for PLA was significantly lower among patients with one DS (aOR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.59-0.96) and more than one DS (aOR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.39-0.95) within 1 year before the index date. CONCLUSION According to these results, we concluded that adult patients with periodontitis aged <50 years old are more at risk for PLA than controls, particularly when they have no DS. Moreover, from 20 years of age, non-periodontal patients subjected to at least 2 DS per year are less at risk for PLA than controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Crohn's disease (CD) patients, many oral complaints have been reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether salivary function is contributing to reduced oral health in CD. Oral and dental complaints in patients were explored. The prevalence of xerostomia in conjunction with salivary flow rates and biochemical saliva composition was studied. METHODS The Xerostomia Inventory score (XI-score), the salivary flow rates, the concentrations of salivary amylase and mucin 5B, and the type of oral and dental complaints were evaluated. These outcomes were stratified by disease activity, using the Harvey Bradshaw Index (HBI) and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ-9). RESULTS Fifty-three CD patients in a Dutch tertiary referral hospital were included. Of the patients evaluated, 9.4% had hyposalivation under resting conditions, and 28.3% had hyposalivation under chewing stimulated conditions. Saliva secretion rates were not correlated to XI-scores. Median XI-score was 25 (11-45). XI-scores were correlated to the IBDQ scores (r = -0.352, P = 0.010). Salivary mucin 5B was correlated to disease activity (r = 0.295, P = 0.04). Regarding the number of oral complaints, a correlation with disease activity (HBI r = 0.349, P = 0.011) and experienced xerostomia (r = -0.554, P = 0.000) was observed. Oral and dental problems like oral ulcers (37.7%) and cavities (46%) occurred more frequently in CD patients, especially when compared with a non-IBD population. CONCLUSIONS Oral and dental complaints are common in CD patients. Xerostomia is correlated with disease activity-associated quality of life and with the number of oral and dental complaints. Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly comprises of two separate inflammatory conditions: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The aetiology of these conditions is still being explored with current evidence pointing towards a combination of environmental and genetic components. However, the pathophysiology is understood as a cytokine driven inflammatory response. There is significant association between IBD and dental conditions such as dental caries, other infections and periodontitis. Anti-inflammatory medications such as 5 aminosalicylic acid (5ASA), steroids and biological therapies are the treatment of choice for these chronic conditions, dependent on aetiology. Therefore, this article aims to educate dentists regarding possible implications IBD and its treatment can have for clinical practice and future research.

Abstract
Widely varying prevalence rates of oral lesions in patients with Crohn's disease have been reported, ranging from 0.5% to 37%. These manifestations may coincide with or precede intestinal symptoms. Oral manifestations can be classified as specific lesions, when macroscopic examination shows similar changes to those observed endoscopically in the intestine, and non-specific lesions including aphthous ulcerations. The most frequently observed oral lesions are oedema, ulcers and hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa. In most patients these lesions are asymptomatic, however, some patients may experience discomfort. In this review we describe the most relevant oro-dental manifestations observed in patients with Crohn's disease and discuss the potential implications for oro-dental management.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic, relapsing inflammatory diseases characterized by exacerbations and remissions of the gastrointestinal tract, clinically manifested as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The etiology of IBDs is considered to be multi factorial, comprising environmental, immune, microbial and genetic factors. Clinical signs may include abdominal pain, frequent bloody diarrheas, mucorrhea, vomiting, fever, fatigue or weight loss. Changes in the oral cavity often precede intestinal symptoms. Inflammatory bowel disease leads to a significant deterioration of oral health, which indicates that cooperation between the dentist and the gastroenterologist is necessary when considering patients' welfare. Patients with IBD have an altered immune response, but microorganisms of the oral cavity may also be responsible for its modification. This review paper discusses the correlation between the immune system and inflammatory bowel disease manifestations in the oral cavity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 593,000 to 780,000 people in the United States (US) have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD), and an additional 33,000 are diagnosed yearly. Our objective was to estimate CD's impact on medical costs, lost earnings, work and school absences, health status, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the US and to compute current and forecasted national costs. METHODS We used the nationally representative Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to match 539 respondents with CD to similar respondents without any inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We estimated annual costs, work and school absences, and self-assessed health status. HRQOL was assessed by the SF-12 Physical Component Summary and Mental Component Summary (PCS and MCS) scores. CD prevalence rates, population counts, and costs were used to forecast total national costs. RESULTS CD is associated with higher medical costs ($13,446 versus $6029) and lost earnings ($1249 versus $644) and is responsible for $3.48 billion in total national costs (expected to increase to $3.72 billion in 2025). Respondents with CD were more likely to miss work (38% versus 33%) or school (64% versus 33%), less likely to report being in excellent or very good physical health (24% versus 63%), and experienced lower HRQOL measured by the Physical Component Summary (43.4 versus 48.5) and Mental Component Summary (48.6 versus 50.0) than those without IBD. CONCLUSIONS CD is responsible for increased medical care costs and lower earnings, health status, and HRQOL. These data can serve as benchmarks when examining future CD-related costs and HRQOL.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to compare the consumption of dental treatment among patients with Crohn´s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to age and gender matched control groups. Design The study group comprised 2085 patients with CD and 3161 with UC from the Uppsala-Örebro region and from the Stockholm region. The patients in the cohort were diagnosed between 1960 and 1989. Patients up to 70 years of age were included in the study. The two patients groups were compared to age- and gender-matched, randomly selected control groups from the same geographic area comprising a corresponding number of participants. Results CD patients had significantly higher total number of procedures registered (p < 0.000). The difference was most pronounced for removable dentures (+65%), fillings in front teeth (+52%) and endodontic treatment (+46%) when Crohn’s patients were compared to controls (p<0.001). The corresponding figures for UC patients were also a significantly higher total number of procedures (p < 0.005), more clinical examinations (p<0.000), fillings in canines and incisors (p < 0.001) and fillings in bicuspids and molars (p < 0.000). Conclusion This study demonstrate that CD and UC individuals use more dental treatment compared to an age-gender matched control group, and more caries-related treatments. The difference was most pronounced for restorative treatment in patients with Crohn’s.
