Learning in the Metaverse: Are University Students Willing to Learn in Immersive Virtual Reality?

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) technology provides several educational affordances that make it a valuable tool for learning, especially from a constructivist learning perspective. Combined with the increasing availability of Metaverse social platforms, such as ENGAGE and AltSpace VR, where students and teachers can meet and work together, IVR may transform how students learn and interact with educational content. However, little is known about students' attitudes toward IVR in education. To address this gap, we surveyed 329 undergraduate students from different universities in Italy. We used the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to predict students' intention to adopt IVR for learning. We further explored the role that different individual factors, including students' learning styles, affordances perceptions, and personal innovativeness, have on their attitudes toward IVR. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that the four constructs of the UTAUT, namely performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions were the strongest predictors of students' intention to use IVR in education and that individual factors only had little impact on it. Based on these results, this study provides helpful indications for researchers and educators who wish to introduce IVR effectively in educational contexts. Given the new possibilities provided by Metaverse applications based on IVR technology for learning, it is indeed crucial to fully understand the attitudes different stakeholders in education have toward adopting this technology in educational contexts.

Understanding Continuance Usage of Mobile Learning Applications: The Moderating Role of Habit

This study explored the factors that affect the intention of users to continue using mobile learning (m-learning) applications (apps). The influence of habit on user behavior toward information systems has been extensively discussed in the literature, but its role in the continuance of users when it comes to their usage of apps, especially m-learning apps, has rarely been reported. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of behaviors regarding the use of m-learning apps, this study constructed a theoretical research framework based on expectation confirmation theory and flow theory by considering habit as a moderating variable. Online questionnaires were administered to users of m-learning apps in Taiwan and data were analyzed through a structural equation modeling approach. The results indicated that the intention of users to continue using m-learning apps was influenced by satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and flow experience. Expectation confirmation affected user satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Differences existed in the intention to continue usage between users with strong and weak habits. In addition, perceived usefulness, expectation confirmation, and flow experience had direct and positive effects on satisfaction. The implications of these findings were discussed.

Virtual reality for pediatric periprocedural care

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Commercial availability of virtual reality headsets and software has exponentially grown over the last decade as it has become more sophisticated, less expensive, and portable. Although primarily used by the general public for entertainment, virtual reality has been adopted by periprocedural clinicians to improve patient experiences and treatments. The purpose of this review is to explore recently reported evidence for virtual reality effectiveness for pediatric periprocedural care and discuss considerations for clinical implementation.

RECENT FINDINGS

In the preprocedure setting, practitioners use virtual reality to introduce children to periprocedural environments, distract attention from preprocedural vascular access, and increase cooperation with anesthesia induction. Intraprocedure, virtual reality decreases sedation requirements, and in some instances, eliminates anesthesia for minor procedures. Virtual reality also augments pain reduction therapies in the acute and extended rehabilitation periods, resulting in faster recovery and improved outcomes. Virtual reality seems to be well treated for pediatric use, given close clinical care and carefully curated content.

SUMMARY

Given the multiple clinical applications of virtual reality to supplement pediatric periprocedural care, practitioners should consider developing clinical programs that reliably provide access to virtual reality. Future research should focus on identification of patient characteristics and types of software that yield optimal patient outcomes.
