Effect of ZnO Nanoparticles Coating Layers on Top of ZnO Nanowires for Morphological, Optical, and Photovoltaic Properties of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

A Review of Friction Performance of Lubricants with Nano Additives

It has been established in literature that the addition of nanoparticles to lubricants at an optimum concentration results in a lower coefficient of friction compared to lubricants with no nanoparticle additives. This review paper shows a comparison of different lubricants based on the COF (coefficient of friction) with nanoadditives. The effect of the addition of nanoparticles on the friction coefficient was analyzed for both synthetic and biolubricants separately. The limitations associated with the use of nanoparticles are explained. The mechanisms responsible for a reduction in friction when nanoparticles are used as an additive are also discussed. Various nanoparticles that have been most widely used in recent years showed good performance within lubricants, including CuO (copper oxide), MoS₂ (molybdenum disulfide), and TiO₂ (titanium dioxide). The paper also indicates some research gaps that need to be addressed.

Theoretical Investigation of the Prospect to Tailor ZnO Electronic Properties with VP Thin Films

The atomic and electronic structure of vanadium phosphide one- to four-atomic-layer thin films and their composites with zinc oxide substrate are modelled by means of quantum chemistry. Favorable vanadium phosphide to ZnO orientation is defined and found to remain the same for all the structures under consideration. The electronic structure of the composites is analyzed in detail. The features of the charge and spin density distribution are discussed.

ZnO Nanowires/N719 Dye With Different Aspect Ratio as a Possible Photoelectrode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

The vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process was applied to fabricate zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) with a different aspect ratio (AR), morphological, and optical properties. The ZnO NWs were grown on a system that contains a quartz substrate with transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin film followed by an Al-doped ZnO (AZO) seed layer; both films were grown by magnetron sputtering at room temperature. It was found that the ZnO NWs presented high crystalline quality and vertical orientation from different structural and morphological characterizations. Also, NWs showed a good density distribution of 69 NWs/μm² with a different AR that offers their capability to be used as possible photoelectrode (anode) in potential future device applications. The samples optical properties were studied using various techniques such as photoluminescence (PL), absorption, and transmittance before and after sensitization with N719 dye. The results demonstrated that NW with 30 nm diameter had the best characteristics as feasible photoelectrode (anode) (high absorption, minimum recombination, high crystallinity). Also, the present samples optical properties were found to be improved due to the existence of N719 dye and Au nanoparticles on the tip of NWs. NWs grown in this work can be used in different photonic and optoelectronic applications.

Toward the Growth of Self-Catalyzed ZnO Nanowires Perpendicular to the Surface of Silicon and Glass Substrates, by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Vertically-oriented zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires were synthesized on glass and silicon substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition and without the use of a catalyst. An intermediate c-axis oriented nanotextured ZnO seed layer in the form of nanowall network with honey comb structure allows the growth of high quality, self-forming, and vertically-oriented nanowires at relatively low temperature (<400 °C) and under argon atmosphere at high pressure (>5 Torr). Many parameters were shown to affect the growth of the ZnO nanowires such as gas pressure, substrate–target distance, and laser energy. Growth of a c-axis-crystalline array of nanowires growing vertically from the energetically favorable sites on the seed layer is observed. Nucleation occurs due to the matching lattice structure and the polar nature of the ZnO seed layer. Morphological, structural, and optical properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed highly c-axis aligned nanowires along the (002) crystal plane. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements showed a strong and narrow bandwidth of Ultraviolet (UV) emission, which shifts to lower wavelength with the increase of pressure.

Ultraviolet Photodetection Based on High-Performance Co-Plus-Ni Doped ZnO Nanorods Grown by Hydrothermal Method on Transparent Plastic Substrate

A growth scheme at a low processing temperature for high crystalline-quality of ZnO nanostructures can be a prime stepping stone for the future of various optoelectronic devices manufactured on transparent plastic substrates. In this study, ZnO nanorods (NRs) grown by the hydrothermal method at 150 °C through doping of transition metals (TMs), such as Co, Ni, or Co-plus-Ni, on polyethylene terephthalate substrates were investigated by various surface analysis methods. The TM dopants in ZnO NRs suppressed the density of various native defect-states as revealed by our photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Further investigation also showed the doping into ZnO NRs brought about a clear improvement in carrier mobility from 0.81 to 3.95 cm2/V-s as well as significant recovery in stoichiometric contents of oxygen. Ultra-violet photodetectors fabricated with Co-plus-Ni codoped NRs grown on an interdigitated electrode structure exhibited a high spectral response of ~137 A/W, on/off current ratio of ~135, and an improvement in transient response speed with rise-up and fall-down times of ~2.2 and ~3.1 s, respectively.

Preparation and Characterization of Waterborne UV Lacquer Product Modified by Zinc Oxide with Flower Shape

In this paper, the waterborne UV lacquer product (WUV) was used as the main raw material, zinc oxide (ZnO) was used as the additive, and the stearic acid as the surface modifier. According to the method of spraying coating on the surface of poplar wood (Populus tomentosa), a simple and efficient preparation method was carried out to generate a super-hydrophobic surface and enhance the erosion resistance of the coating. By testing, the contact angle (CA) of water on the coating surface can reach 158.4°. The microstructure and chemical composition of the surface of coatings were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that under acidic conditions, the non-polar long chain alkyl group of stearic acid vapor molecule reacted with the hydroxyl group in acetic acid, the metal ions of the ZnO were displaced to the stearic acid and generated globular zinc stearate (C₃₆H₇₀O₄Zn). The hydrophobic groups –CH₃ were grafted to the surface of zinc stearate (ZnSt2) particles and the micro/nano level of multistage flower zinc stearate coarse structure was successfully constructed on the surface of poplar wood, which endowed it with superhydrophobic properties. It is shown that the coating has good waterproof and erosion resistance.
