Abstract
Heteroatom-doped photoluminescent (PL) carbon dots (CDs) have recently gained attention as optical sensors due to their excellent tunable properties. In this work, we propose a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of PL nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) co-doped carbon dots (NSP-CDs) using glutathione and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) as precursors. The synthesized NSP-CDs were characterized using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The NSP-CDs exhibited excellent PL properties with green emission at 492 nm upon excitation at 417 nm, a high quantum yield of 26.7%, and dependent emission behavior. The as-prepared NSP-CDs were spherical with a well-monodispersed average particle size of 5.2 nm. Moreover, NSP-CDs demonstrate high PL stability toward a wider pH, high salt ionic strength, and various solvents. Furthermore, the NSP-CDs showed a three-state "off-on-off" PL response upon the sequential addition of Al3+ and Fe3+ ions, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 10.8 nM for Al3+ and 50.7 nM for Fe3+. The NSP-CD sensor can construct an INHIBIT logic gate with Al3+ and Fe3+ ions as the chemical inputs and emissions as the output mode. Owing to an excellent tunable PL property and biocompatibility, the NSP-CDs were applied for sensing Al3+ and Fe3+ ions as well as live cell imaging. Furthermore, NSP-CDs were designed as PL sensors for detecting Al3+ and Fe3+ ions in real water show their potential application.

Abstract
Food safety is connected to public health, making it crucial to protecting people's health. Food analysis and detection can assure food quality and effectively reduce the entry of harmful foods into the market. Carbon dots (CDs) are an excellent choice for food analysis and detection attributable to their advantages of good optical properties, water solubility, high chemical stability, easy functionalization, excellent bleaching resistance, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility. This paper focuses on the optical properties, synthesis methods, and applications of CDs in food analysis and detection, including the recent advances in food nutritional composition analysis and food quality detection, such as food additives, heavy metal ions, foodborne pathogens, harmful organic pollutants, and pH value. Moreover, this review also discusses the potentially toxic effects, current challenges, and prospects of CDs in basic research and applications. We hope that this review can provide valuable information to lay a foundation for subsequent research on CDs and promote the exploration of CDs-based sensing for future food detection.

Abstract
Drug-resistant bacteria are caused by antibiotic abuse and/or biofilm formation and have become a threat to the food industry. Carbon dot (CD)-based nanomaterials are a very promising tools for combating pathogenic and spoilage bacteria, and they possess exceptional and adjustable photoelectric and chemical properties. In view of the rapid development of CD-based nanomaterials and their increasing popularity in the food industry, a comprehensive and updated review is needed to summarize their antimicrobial mechanisms and applications in foods. This review discusses the synthesis of CDs, antimicrobial mechanisms, and their applications for extending the shelf life of food. It includes the synthesis of CDs using small molecules, polymers, and biomass. It also discusses the different antimicrobial mechanisms of CDs and their use as antibacterial agents and carriers/ligands. CD-based materials have proven effective against pathogenic and spoilage bacteria in food by inhibiting planktonic bacteria and biofilms. Optimization of the production parameters of CDs can help them achieve a full-spectral response, but degradability still requires further research.

Abstract
Herein, Ag-containing carbon dots (Ag-CDs) was synthesized based on folic acid. In a neutral solution, its fluorescence emission owns a structure fixing fluorescent species with the emission maximum at 400 nm and an excitation-wavelength dependent fluorescent species, respectively. By comparing fluorescent emission and excitation spectra, the electronic absorption origins of these fluorescent species were assigned. With the assistance of UV–Vis absorption and XPS, the pH-regulating fluorescence mechanism of Ag-CDs was studied and proposed. A particularly strong fluorescence emitter was observed at pH ~12 with a mixing coordination structure as Ag(CDs-NH2)OH. The as-prepared Ag-CDs might be developed into a fluorescent sensor, especially at extremely basic conditions.

Abstract
Waste biomass such as lignin constitutes a great raw material for eco-friendly carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesis, which find numerous applications in various fields of industry and medicine. Carbon nanodots, due to their unique luminescent properties as well as water-solubility and biocompatibility, are superior to traditional organic dyes. Thus, obtainment of CQDs with advanced properties can contribute to modern diagnosis and cell visualization method development. In this article, a new type of coumarin-modified CQD was obtained via a hybrid, two-step pathway consisting of hydrothermal carbonization and microwave-assisted surface modification with coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and 7-(Diethylamino) coumarin-3-carboxylate. The ready products were characterized over their chemical structure and morphology. The nanomaterials were confirmed to have superior fluorescence characteristics and quantum yield up to 18.40%. They also possessed the ability of biomolecules and ion detection due to the fluorescence quenching phenomena. Their lack of cytotoxicity to L929 mouse fibroblasts was confirmed by XTT assay. Moreover, the CQDs were proven over their applicability in real-time bioimaging. Obtained results clearly demonstrated that proposed surface-modified carbon quantum dots may become a powerful tool applicable in nanomedicine and pharmacy.
