PM2.5 Concentration Estimation Based on Image Processing Schemes and Simple Linear Regression

Air pollution threatens human health, necessitating effective and convenient air quality monitoring. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using camera images for air quality estimation. However, a major challenge has been nighttime detection due to the limited visibility of nighttime images. Here we present a hybrid deep learning model, capitalizing on the temporal continuity of air quality changes for estimating outdoor air quality from surveillance images. Our model, which integrates a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), adeptly captures spatial-temporal image features, enabling air quality estimation at any time of day, including PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, as well as the air quality index (AQI). Compared to independent CNN networks that solely extract spatial features, our model demonstrates superior accuracy on self-constructed datasets with R2 = 0.94 and RMSE = 5.11 μg m-3 for PM2.5, R2 = 0.92 and RMSE = 7.30 μg m-3 for PM10, and R2 = 0.94 and RMSE = 5.38 for AQI. Furthermore, our model excels in daytime air quality estimation and enhances nighttime predictions, elevating overall accuracy. Validation across diverse image datasets and comparative analyses underscore the applicability and superiority of our model, reaffirming its applicability and superiority for air quality monitoring.

A PM2.5 concentration estimation method based on multi-feature combination of image patches

An efficient, accurate and high-resolution PM_2.5 monitoring approach is critical to pollution control and public health. Here we propose an image-based method for PM_2.5 concentration estimation. The method combines the image features with other influence factors to inference PM_2.5, and an improved patchwise strategy is used in the processes of regression and prediction. The experimental results of the Shanghai scene dataset show that our method achieved a higher estimation accuracy with 0.88 at R² and 10.42 μg⋅m^-3 at RMSE, compared to other methods; the addition of the influence factors, such as relative humidity and photographing month, improve the accuracy, while the improved patchwise strategy significantly enhanced the predictive performance. Moreover, the results of two datasets at different times and location further demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

Measuring PM2.5 Concentrations from a Single Smartphone Photograph

PM2.5 participates in light scattering, leading to degraded outdoor views, which forms the basis for estimating PM2.5 from photographs. This paper devises an algorithm to estimate PM2.5 concentrations by extracting visual cues and atmospheric indices from a single photograph. While air quality measurements in the context of complex urban scenes are particularly challenging, when only a single atmospheric index or cue is given, each one can reinforce others to yield a more robust estimator. Therefore, we selected an appropriate atmospheric index in various outdoor scenes to identify reasonable cue combinations for measuring PM2.5. A PM2.5 dataset (PhotoPM-daytime) was built and used to evaluate performance and validate efficacy of cue combinations. Furthermore, a city-wide experiment was conducted using photographs crawled from the Internet to demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm in large-area PM2.5 monitoring. Results show that smartphones equipped with the developed method could potentially be used as PM2.5 sensors.

Smarter Open Government Data for Society 5.0: Are Your Open Data Smart Enough?

Nowadays, governments launch open government data (OGD) portals that provide data that can be accessed and used by everyone for their own needs. Although the potential economic value of open (government) data is assessed in millions and billions, not all open data are reused. Moreover, the open (government) data initiative as well as users' intent for open (government) data are changing continuously and today, in line with IoT and smart city trends, real-time data and sensor-generated data have higher interest for users. These "smarter" open (government) data are also considered to be one of the crucial drivers for the sustainable economy, and might have an impact on information and communication technology (ICT) innovation and become a creativity bridge in developing a new ecosystem in Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. The paper inspects OGD portals of 60 countries in order to understand the correspondence of their content to the Society 5.0 expectations. The paper provides a report on how much countries provide these data, focusing on some open (government) data success facilitating factors for both the portal in general and data sets of interest in particular. The presence of "smarter" data, their level of accessibility, availability, currency and timeliness, as well as support for users, are analyzed. The list of most competitive countries by data category are provided. This makes it possible to understand which OGD portals react to users' needs, Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 request the opening and updating of data for their further potential reuse, which is essential in the digital data-driven world.

Using High-Frequency Information and RH to Estimate AQI Based on SVR

The Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan’s Executive Yuan has set up many air quality monitoring stations to monitor air pollution in the environment. The current weather forecast also includes information used to predict air pollution. Since air quality indicators have a considerable impact on people, the development of a simple, fast, and low-cost method to measure the AQI value is a worthy topic of research. In this study, a method was proposed to estimate AQI. Visibility had a clear positive relationship with AQI. When images and AQI were compared, it was easy to see that visibility decreased with the AQI value increase. Distance is the main factor affecting visibility, so measuring visibility with images has also become a research topic. Images with high and low PM_2.5 concentrations were used to obtain regions of interest (RoI). The pixels in the RoI were calculated to obtain high-frequency information. The high-frequency information of RoI, RH, and true AQI was used for training via SVR, which was used to generate the model for AQI estimation. One year of experimental samples was collected for the experiment. Two indices were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed method could be used to estimate AQI with acceptable performance in a simple, fast, and low-cost way.
