[Curative effects of bi-pedicled deep inferior epigastric perforator flap in repairing large soft tissue defects in the lower limbs]

Objective: To investigate the curative effects of bi-pedicled deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap in repairing large soft tissue defects in the lower limbs. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted. From February 2016 to June 2020, 16 patients with large soft tissue defects in the lower limbs caused by trauma or after tumor/scar resection were admitted to the Department of Hand Surgery of the Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Southwest Medical University, including 9 males and 7 females, aged 25-58 years, with the area of soft tissue defects ranging from 14.0 cm×8.0 cm to 32.0 cm×18.0 cm. Using the abdomen as the donor site, the conjoined abdominal wall flap, i.e., the bi-pedicled DIEP flap (with an area ranging from 15.0 cm×9.0 cm to 32.0 cm×20.0 cm) carrying two sets of the trunk of the deep inferior epigastric artery was designed and resected to repair the wound. The donor site wound was sutured directly. The flap survival and wound healing in the donor and recipient areas were observed after operation. The curative effect was evaluated during the follow-up. At the last follow-up, the American Knee Society score and lower extremity functional scale were used to assess the functions of knee joint and lower limb, respectively. Results: The flaps of 15 patients survived after operation; the flap of one patient had partial infection at the edge after operation but healed after debridement and dressing change. The wounds in the donor and recipient areas of 16 patients all healed well. Follow-up of 16-28 months showed that the recipient area had a good shape and pliable texture, and there was no obvious swollen appearance, hyperpigmentation, or abnormal hair growth; the donor site had linear scar only, with no complications such as abdominal hernia or hyperplastic scar; the functions of knee joint and lower limb were well reconstructed, with no recurrence of tumor. At the last follow-up, among the 4 patients with knee joint injury, 3 cases were excellent and 1 case was good in the evaluation of knee joint function; among the 12 patients with lower limb injury, 9 cases were excellent and 3 cases were good in the evaluation of lower limb function. Conclusions: The donor site of bi-pedicled DIEP flap is concealed with abundant tissue and large area for resection, with which can be used to repair large soft tissue defects in the lower limbs, achieving good short-term results of appearance and function restoration.

[Efficacy of adrenocorticotropic hormone in children with frequently relapsing or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome]

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in children with frequently relapsing or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome. Methods: The clinical data of 38 children with frequently relapsing or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome who were admitted to the Department of Nephrology, the Children Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January 2015 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The general information, clinical manifestations, laboratory data of the children and follow-up (till 12 months after treatment) were collected. The patients were divided into ACTH group and Glucocorticoid (GC) group according to treatment plan. Cumulative remission, average recurrence rate, GC dosage, height and weight change and peripheral blood CD19⁺B lymphocyte count were compared between the two groups to evaluate the efficacy and adverse reactions of ACTH. Fisher's exact test, t test or rank sum test was used for comparison between groups. Results: Among the 38 patients, 28 were male and 10 were female, aged 84 (24, 180) months; 19 were in ACTH group and 19 were in GC group. The cumulative remission rate of 12 months in ACTH group was higher than that in GC group (9/19 vs. 2/19,χ²=6.81,P=0.009), the average recurrence rate was lower than that in GC group ((0.7±0.8) vs. (1.7±1.1) times, t=-3.27, P=0.011), and the average dosage of GC was lower than that in GC group ((0.27±0.16) vs. (0.51±0.27) mg/(kg·d), t=-3.21, P=0.014). The increase in height was higher than that in the GC group (4 (3,5) vs. 3 (2, 3) cm/year, Z=2.58, P=0.010), and the peripheral blood CD19⁺B lymphocyte count was lower than that in the GC group ((223±149)×10⁶ vs. (410±213)×10⁶/L,t=-3.35, P=0.009). In safety, 19 cases had transient decreased urine volume, 7 cases had hyperglycemia, and 3 cases had hypertension during the infusion of ACTH, which could be relieved after drug withdrawal. Conclusion: ACTH has a better effect on children with frequently relapsing or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome, which can improve cumulative sustained remission rate, lower relapses rate and decrease the dosage of GC, with good safety.

[The association between the frequency of prenatal care in childbearing aged women and risk of small for gestational age among neonatal twins in Shaanxi Province]

Objective: To explore the association between the frequency of prenatal care in childbearing aged women and risk of small for gestational age (SGA) among neonatal twins in Shaanxi Province. Methods: From July to December 2013, a total of 30 027 childbearing aged women, who were pregnant from January 2010 to November 2013 and had definite outcomes, were selected from 30 districts (counties) of Shaanxi Province by using the multi-stage random sampling method. The questionnaires with a face-to-face survey method were used to retrospectively collect demographic information, pregnancy history, lifestyle during pregnancy, disease history, nutritional supplements, and health care during pregnancy. Information on the gestational age and birth weight of the newborn were obtained by consulting the medical certificate of birth and were registered as twin A and twin B by birth order. Finally, 356 childbearing aged women and their twin babies with complete data were included in the analysis. A generalized estimation equation model was used to analyze the association between the frequency of prenatal care and the risk of SGA among neonatal twins. Results: The age of childbearing aged women was (27.44±4.68) years old, of which 79.49% (283 women) were rural residents and 44.38% (158 women) had seven or more times prenatal care. The gestational age and birth weight were (37.64±2.51) weeks and (2 510±497) g, respectively. The prevalence of SGA was 51.40% (183/356) for twin A and 53.37% (190/356) for twin B, respectively. The prevalence of SGA was 44.30% (70/158) for twin A with seven or more times prenatal care and 42.41% (67/158) for twin B with seven or more times prenatal care, which was lower than that for twins with less than seven times prenatal care, respectively [57.07% (113/198) and 62.12% (123/198)] (P values were 0.017 and <0.001). The results of generalized estimation equation model suggested that compared to those with less than seven times prenatal care, after adjusting for parity, birth order, place of residence, maternal age, occupation, education, family wealth index, passive smoking, pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome, folic acid, and iron supplement during perinatal period, and gender of the newborn, the OR (95%CI) of risk of SGA among childbearing aged women with seven or more times prenatal care was 0.60 (0.40-0.91). Conclusion: Seven or more times prenatal care could reduce the risk of SGA among neonatal twins in Shanxi Province.

Research on the Diffusion Law of Oncomelania Along with the Flow Through a Side-weir

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease mostly found in areas along the Changjiang River, Oncomelanias is the only intermediate host of schistosomiasis. Oncomelania entering into farmland or the residential zones through the flood discharge or irrigation system is the main reason of spreading schistosomiasis. Therefore it is most essential and effective way to control diffusion of oncomelanias along with flow for preventing epidemic of schistosomiasis disease. In order to simulate the flood discharge when the river dike break or the flow from main to branch channel, a side-weir flow system is set up in this paper, And furtherly the flow characteristic is studied by experiment and mathematical modeling, Finally the research on the diffusion law of oncomelania along with side-weir flow is carried out using the experimental test. The results show that oncomelanias do not equally distribute at floodplain areas, but place where flow velocity is small, i.e. in the vortex areas during oncomelanias moving along with side-weir flow. The settling positions of oncomelanias are obtained, Which lay a good foundation for eliminating oncomelanias.

Lifespan influences on mid- to late-life cognitive function in a Chinese birth cohort

OBJECTIVE

To explore factors throughout the lifespan that influence cognition in midlife to late life.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective birth cohort study of 2,062 individuals born during 1921-1954 in Beijing, China. In 2003-2005, birth records were abstracted, and participants then 50-82 years old received standardized examinations for health, cognition, and socio-environmental measures. Using cumulative logit models, we assessed adjusted relative effects of prenatal, early life, and adult factors on mid- to late-life cognition.

RESULTS

Most prenatal factors were associated with mid- to late-life cognition in the unadjusted models. However, when childhood and adult factors were sequentially added to the models, the impact of prenatal factors showed successive attenuation in effect size, and became insignificant. In contrast, early life factors remained significantly associated with mid- to late-life cognition even after full life-course adjustments. Specifically, those whose fathers had laborer vs professional occupations (odds ratio [OR](Laborer) 1.74; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.25-2.42) had poorer cognitive outcomes, while individuals who drank milk daily in childhood (OR 0.65; 95% CI: 0.54-0.80), had more years of education (OR(10-12 years) 0.60; 95% CI: 0.45-0.81; OR(13+ yrs) 0.29; 95% CI: 0.23-0.38), and were taller adults (OR(height > or = SD) 0.65; 95% CI: 0.49-0.86) had better cognition. The high prenatal risk infants had similar patterns with a trend toward a stronger association between cognition and socioenvironmental factors.

CONCLUSION

Mid- to late-life cognition is influenced by factors over the entire lifespan with the greatest impact coming from early life exposures. Nutrition, education, social, and family environment in early life may have a long-term impact on cognition in developing countries.

Kimura disease: a case report and review of the Chinese literature

BACKGROUND

Kimura disease, often accompanied by nephrotic syndrome, is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown cause. In this report, the clinical and histopathological characteristics of 20 Chinese patients with Kimura disease-associated nephrotic syndrome were retrospectively evaluated.

METHODS

We report a case of Kimura disease that was diagnosed recently in our ward, with steroid-responsive but recurrent minimal-change nephrotic syndrome. Meanwhile, we also used three powerful Chinese journal search engines (Cqvip.com, Wanfang.data and ScienceChina) to search the cases reported in Chinese from 1984 to 2007.

RESULTS

The nephrotic syndrome of our patient occurred 20 months after the onset of Kimura disease. Renal biopsy revealed minimal-change lesions. The patient was responsive to the steroid, but proteinuria recurred. In most of the 19 other cases, the onset of nephrotic syndrome occurred after subcutaneous masses. Renal biopsy in 13 cases showed mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis in 9, minimal change disease in 2 and membrane nephropathy in 2 cases. Serum creatinine levels were elevated in 5 patients.

CONCLUSION

Normally, Kimura disease-associated nephrotic syndrome patients are sensitive to prednisone therapy but are likely to relapse. In patients with recurrent nephrotic syndrome, renal insufficiency is not uncommon.

In vitro study of foot kinematics using a dynamic walking cadaver model

There is a dearth of information on navicular, cuboid, cuneiform and metatarsal kinematics during walking and our objective was to study the kinematic contributions these bones might make to foot function. A dynamic cadaver model of walking was used to apply forces to cadaver feet and mobilise them in a manner similar to in vivo. Kinematic data were recorded from 13 cadaver feet. Given limitations to the simulation, the data describe what the cadaver feet were capable of in response to the forces applied, rather than exactly how they performed in vivo. The talonavicular joint was more mobile than the calcaneocuboid joint. The range of motion between cuneiforms and navicular was similar to that between talus and navicular. Metatarsals four and five were more mobile relative to the cuboid than metatarsals one, two and three relative to the cuneiforms. This work has confirmed the complexity of rear, mid and forefoot kinematics. The data demonstrate the potential for often-ignored foot joints to contribute significantly to the overall kinematic function of the foot. Previous emphasis on the ankle and sub talar joints as the principal articulating components of the foot has neglected more distal articulations. The results also demonstrate the extent to which the rigid segment assumptions of previous foot kinematics research have over simplified the foot.

Use of electron microscopic evaluation for the diagnosis of adrenal cortical carcinoma in fine needle aspiration cytology: a case report and review of the literature

Bilateral adrenal tumors were detected in a 72-year-old man who had a history of hepatic inflammatory pseudotumor. Computet tomography (CT)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the adrenal glands was performed. The cytologic findings were similar to the previous diagnosis of "inflammatory pseudotumor" in the liver. However, the origin of some aggregated large atypical cells observed in the adrenal FNAC specimens was not known. Immunocytochemically, these large atypical cells were positive for vimentin and negative for cytokeratin and chromogranin A. An electron-microscopic study showed that these large atypical cells contained mitochondria with tubulovesicular cristae and smooth endoplasmic reticulum arranged in whorled and laminated patterns, and these findings confirmed diagnosis of primary adrenal cortical carcinoma. The histopathological diagnosis of the resected bilateral adrenal tumor was adrenal cortical carcinoma. The patient died 7 months after surgery, with recurrence of the bilateral adrenal cortical carcinoma and extensive metastases. A diagnosis of primary adrenal cortical carcinoma with extensive metastases was finally demonstrated by autopsy. Retrospectively, the previous liver tumor was determined to be a metastatic lesion.

Thanatophoric dysplasia type I

Thanatophoric dysplasia is a sporadic, nearly always lethal congenital skeletal dysplasia. It is characterized by shortening of the limbs, a severely small thorax, macrocephaly, and platyspondyly. There are two major subtypes: a short, curved femur characterizes type I, and a straighter femur with cloverleaf skull characterizes type II. Recently, mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR-3) gene have been identified in both subtypes, which suggest that thanatophoric dysplasia is a genetically homogenous skeletal disorder. Most affected neonates die of respiratory failure, due to narrow thorax with pulmonary hypoplasia. Antenatal sonographic diagnosis is feasible in the second trimester of pregnancy, but differentiating thanatophoric dysplasia from non-lethal skeletal disorders is very important. At the present time, however, prenatal genetic screening seems unpractical.

Heat shock cognate-70 gene expression declines during normal aging of the primate retina

PURPOSE

Despite documented age-related changes in retinal function and histology, little is known about the pattern of gene expression during normal aging of the vertebrate retina. This study was undertaken to definitively characterize gene expression in the primate retina during aging.

METHODS

Human retina cDNA library clones were arrayed at high density on nylon membranes and screened with mixed cDNA probes generated from young (4-year-old) and old (80-year-old) human retinae. Clones showing a more than twofold difference in intensity were rescreened by dot blot analysis with the same probes and with mixed cDNA probes generated from young (2-3 years) and old (27-35 years) rhesus monkeys. One clone identified by its differential (age-putative) signal, and age-related differential expression was used for analysis of Northern blot analysis of total retinal RNA from human donors (35 weeks to 94 years of age) and two rhesus monkeys (2 and 27 years of age). The identified clone was sequenced and compared with entries in the GenBank/EMBL databases. Western blot analysis was performed on protein isolated from the retina of human donors aged 4 to 64 years and rhesus monkeys aged 18 months and 35 years.

RESULTS

Approximately 1.6% of the 55,368 retina-expressed sequences examined show age-related changes between tissues from young and old donors. The mRNA level one clone, identical with heat shock cognate (HSC)70, was altered during normal retinal aging in primates. Regression analysis of Northern blot analysis signals from 23 human donors suggested that there may be a two- to threefold decrease in HSC70 mRNA levels in the human retina by the eighth decade of life. Western blot analysis also showed lower levels of the 70-kDa HSC protein in older tissues of both primates.

CONCLUSIONS

HSC70 mRNA levels apparently decline during normal aging of the primate retina. Because the heat shock 70 protein family may play important roles in ocular development and protection from various biologic and environmental stresses, decreased HSC70 levels in the retina during aging may contribute to the apparent increased susceptibility of the retina to age-acquired retinal disease.

Automated Talairach atlas-based parcellation and measurement of cerebral lobes in children

This study applied a Talairach-based automated parcellation method, originally proposed for adults, to the measurement of lobar brain regions in pediatric study groups. Manual measures of lobar brain regions in a sample of 15 healthy boys, girls and adults were used initially to revise the original Talairach-based grid to increase its applicability to pediatric brains. The applicability of the revised Talairach grid was then tested on an independent sample of five girls with Rett syndrome. As Tables 3 and 4 in the text demonstrate, sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values either remained unchanged or increased as a result of revising the sectors to fit the brains of children. High levels of sensitivity and specificity were achieved for all revised Talairach-based calculations in relation to the manual measures. Both positive predictive values and intraclass correlations between volumetric measures produced by the revised automated and manual methods varied with the relative size of the brain region. Values were relatively low for smaller structures such as the brainstem and subcortical region, and high for lobar regions. These results suggest that the automated Talairach atlas-based parcellation method can produce sensitive and specific volumetric measures of lobar brain regions in both normal children and children with brain disorders. Accordingly, the method holds much promise for facilitating quantitative pediatric neuroimaging research.

Ultrastructural characteristics of myocardial and coronary microvascular lesions in Kawasaki disease

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome with multisystemic vasculitis affecting mainly infants and children. Although several studies on cardiovascular lesions in KD have been done at the light microscopic level, the ultrastructural characteristics and incidences of these lesions have not been well defined. In order to investigate the myocardial and coronary microvascular sequelae in KD, we performed an ultrastructural study on endomyocardial biopsy specimens obtained during follow-up from 54 patients who had typical clinical manifestations of KD, of whom 47 had associated coronary aneurysms as demonstrated by coronary arteriography (CAG) or two-dimensional echocardiography in the acute or healed stage. The average age of onset was 2.2 years old and the duration of illness was from 2 months to 23 years. Follow-up CAG showed that the coronary aneurysms persisted in 33 of the 47 patients (8 with associated stenosis) and resolved in the remaining 14 patients. Ultrastructurally, the myocardial changes revealed hypertrophy, various degrees of degeneration, proliferation and abnormality of mitochondria, infiltration of a small number of lymphocytes, and fibrosis. The coronary microvascular lesion was characterized by microvascular dilatation, endothelial cell injury, platelet aggregation with thrombosis, and stenotic lumen with thickened walls in the small arterioles. It persisted after convalescent stage even up to 23 years and closely correlated with the myocardial sequelae. Moreover, significantly increased incidences of myocardial and coronary microvascular lesions were found in patients with coronary artery lesion. These findings suggest the coronary microvascular lesion as a possible underlying factor of persistent sequelae in KD.

Childhood MELAS syndrome presenting with seizure and cortical blindness: a case report

An 11-year-old boy presented with seizure and cortical blindness. A T1 weighted magnetic resonance image of the brain showed high signal intensity in the bilateral corpus striatum and long T1 and T2 changes in the bilateral occipital and cerebellar hemispheric regions. Increased cerebrospinal fluid lactate concentration of 56.7 mg/dl and blood lactate concentration of 34.2 mg/dl were also noted. A muscle biopsy obtained from the quadriceps femoris muscle showed the presence of ragged red fibers and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis showed an A-->G mutation at nucleotide position 3243. MtDNA analysis of the patient's mother revealed the same mutation. These findings indicated MELAS syndrome (mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes).

Reliability and validity of an algorithm for fuzzy tissue segmentation of MRI

PURPOSE

A new multistep, volumetric-based tissue segmentation algorithm that results in fuzzy (or probabilistic) voxel description is described. This algorithm is designed to accurately segment gray matter, white matter, and CSF and can be applied to both single channel high resolution and multispectral (multiecho) MR images.

METHOD

The reliability and validity of this method are evaluated by assessing (a) the stability of the algorithm across time, rater, and pulse sequence; (b) the accuracy of the method when applied to both real and synthetic image datasets; and (c) differences in specific tissue volumes between individuals with a specific genetic condition (fragile X syndrome) and normal control subjects.

RESULTS

The algorithm was found to have high reliability, accuracy, and validity. The finding of increased caudate gray matter volume associated with the fragile X syndrome is replicated in this sample.

CONCLUSION

Since this segmentation approach incorporates "fuzzy" or probabilistic methods, it has the potential to more accurately address partial volume effects, anatomical variation within "pure" tissue compartments, and more subtle changes in tissue volumes as a result of disease and treatment. The method is a component of software that is available in the public domain and has been implemented on an inexpensive personal computer thus offering an attractive and promising method for determining the status and progression of both normal development and pathology of the CNS.

Application of an automated parcellation method to the analysis of pediatric brain volumes

New techniques in quantitative imaging are needed to accelerate understanding of brain development and function in children. In this study we evaluate the reliability and validity of an automated parcellation method for the measurement of large and small brain regions in normal and developmentally disabled children. We utilized an adaptation of the Talairach atlas to semi-automatically quantify brain volumes from 10 children with fragile X syndrome, 10 age- and gender-matched controls and 10 adult controls comparing them to 'gold standard' manually delineated regions. Excellent sensitivity, specificity, intra-class correlation and positive predictive value were achieved for large structures although results were less satisfactory for smaller structures, illustrating the limits of resolution of the method. Statistically significant differences in regional brain volumes were shown between males and females, children and adults, and individuals with fragile X and matched controls. This study demonstrates an automated method which rapidly and accurately quantifies large neuroanatomical structures, but not smaller structures. This method is sufficiently accurate to demonstrate some known anatomical differences in individuals with fragile X; the results suggest that this method could be applied to the assessment of brain volume in other neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Central core disease associated with scoliosis: report of one case

A 13 year-old girl with scoliosis and central core disease is reported. She was noted to have mild psychomotor developmental delay since early infancy. Scoliosis with minimal muscle weakness was noted at about five years old. The neurological examination disclosed absent knee jerk. The spine MRI showed no significant finding. The serum CK revealed 518 U/L. The muscle biopsy obtained from the quadriceps femoris muscle showed Type 1 fiber atrophy and predominance, as is commonly seen in congenital myopathies. Under nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase (NADH) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) stains, core structures were identified and the diagnosis of central core disease (CCD) was made. Since kyphoscoliosis usually becomes prominent as muscle weakness progresses to loss of ambulation in other myopathies, the disproportionate spinal involvement in central core disease appears to be a striking feature. We suggest that all patients with idiopathic scoliosis deserve a thorough neurological evaluation if congenital myopathies are suspected. Muscle biopsy should also be recommended for a confirmatory diagnosis even if only minimal muscle weakness present. Besides, early detection of CCD helps us to identify the population who are at a higher risk for malignant hyperthermia.

[Rates of hip fractures in Beijing China]

One-third of the world's hip fractures are said to occur in Asia, but there have been no validated studies of hip fracture rates in China. In 1988-1992 all 76 hospitals in Beijing reported 820 hip fracture admissions coded as ICD-9. Checking against original discharge logs, medical records, X-ray reports, operation notes and operating room logs of a random sample of Beijing hospitals to discover underestimated and misclassified cases. In order to estimate hip fracture treated outside hospitals, we also interviewed a random sample of 2113 women aged 50 and over with a 97% response rate in Beijing. Finally, we also surveyed 27 hospitals in the suburbs of Beijing, but have found that no Beijing residents had been treated for hip fracture outside the city. Based on the 1990 China census, age-standardized rates (per 100,000) of hip fractures in Beijing were 88 for women, 97 for men. From 1988 to 1992, the rates in Beijing increased 35% in women and 33% in men. This is the first validated population-based study on the rates of hip fractures in China that has confirmed the completeness and accuracy of reports of hip fracture cases and has estimated the degree of under-reporting of hospital discharge. Hip fracture rates in Beijing are among the lowest in the world but may rise rapidly.

Dolichoectatic aneurysm of common carotid artery: an animal model with histological correlation

There is a limited understanding of the pathogenesis of dolichoectatic (dolicho = long; ectatic = dilated) aneurysms of elastic arteries. Therefore, we developed a model of dolichoectatic changes in elastic arteries by injecting porcine elastase into the media of the carotid artery of male New Zealand white rabbits. After 3 months, gross examination of the carotid arteries in vivo revealed dilated and tortuous vessels. The carotid arteries were then harvested, and cross-sections of the vessels were stained by the Verhoff-van Giesson stain. Histologically, the internal elastic lamina was dissolved in the most dilated areas. The elastic lamellae of the media were also digested and there was reorientation of the innermost medial smooth muscle layer. These gross and histologic changes were present in 80% of the treated carotid arteries and in none of the contralateral control vessels. Our study suggests the importance of the elastic lamellae for the maintenance of tubular shape and length of the carotid artery and describes a new chronic animal model of dolichoectatic aneurysm of the common carotid artery.

Reconstruction of sheath with fascial graft in flexor tendon repair. An experimental study

Using chicken's toes as an experimental model, we compared the healing process and function recovery of partially injured flexor tendons when the sheath was repaired with fascial graft, sheath patch or was left as a defect. Post-operatively, the toes were immobilised or mobilised immediately. Histological study and the measurement of tendon sliding revealed that the sheath reconstruction and mobilised groups were better than the sheath defect or immobilised groups. We also found the fascial graft was superior in the reconstruction of tendon sheath and may become synovial-like tissue under the sliding pressure of the tendon.

Preparative slab electrofocusing of methane monooxygenase from a type I methanotroph Methylomonas GYJ3

The isolation and purification of methane monooxygenase from a type I methanotroph Methylomonas GYJ3 to near homogeneity is reported. The isoelectric focusing in flat-bed granulated gels has resolved the methane monooxygenase into three protein components. The specific activity of the enzyme is 198.4 n mol per min per mg protein, degree of purification 4.13-fold. Recovery of the focused proteins is high and elution simple. Several purification steps may be omitted from the previously published scheme by other techniques.
