Abstract
Serum leucine-rich alpha-2 glycoprotein (LRG) has been utilized for adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, its efficacy in pediatric IBD remains unknown. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of serum LRG for pediatric IBD with that of current inflammatory markers, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). This retrospective case-control study included pediatric patients, aged <16 years, who underwent colonoscopy and/or esophagogastroduodenoscopy between April 2017 and March 2022. All eligible patients were divided into two groups: patients with IBD, diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and non-IBD controls. The optimal cut-off value of serum LRG for IBD diagnosis was determined from receiver operating characteristic analysis, and diagnostic accuracy of serum LRG was compared to serum ESR and CRP. A total of 53 patients (24 with IBD and 29 non-IBD controls) met the inclusion criteria. The cut-off value of serum LRG for IBD diagnosis was determined to be 19.5 μg/ml. At this cut-off value, serum LRG had a positive predictive value (PPV) of 0.80 and negative predictive value (NPV) of 0.88. In contrast, PPV and NPV were 0.78 and 0.70 for serum ESR and 0.82 and 0.72 for serum CRP, respectively. Serum LRG can be a potential diagnostic marker for pediatric IBD, with higher diagnostic accuracy than that of the conventional serum markers ESR and CRP.

Abstract
Transmission across the septal junctions of the segmented giant axons of crayfish is accounted for quantitatively by a simple equivalent circuit. The septal membranes are passive, resistive components and transmission is ephaptic, by the electrotonic spread of the action current of the pre-septal spike. The electrotonic spread appears as a septal potential, considerably smaller than the pre-septal spike, but usually still large enough to initiate a new spike in the post-septal segments. The septal membranes do not exhibit rectification, at least over a range of ± 25 mv polarization and this accounts for their capacity for bidirectional transmission. The commissural branches, which are put forth by each lateral axon, make functional connections between the two axons. Transmission across these junctions can also be bidirectional and is probably also ephaptic. Under various conditions, the ladder-like network of cross-connections formed by the commissural junctions can give rise to circus propagation of impulses from one axon to the other. This can give rise to reverberatory activity of both axons at frequencies as high as 400/sec.

Abstract
Neurons in the heart ganglion of the mantis shrimp (a stomatopod crustacean) are functionally tightly linked together. The extracellular action potential from the whole trunk very often shows a complex form, but the response is all-or-none to the applied stimulus, indicating that the excitation in one neuron spreads very rapidly to all others. Application of isotonic MgCl2 solution or repetitive stimulation sometimes separates the spike into its components. The resting potential of the soma membrane is 50 to 60 mv. External stimulation elicits a spike of 60 to 80 mv amplitude with a step on its rising phase. Hyperpolarization reveals one more inflection on the rising phase. These inflections divide the soma action potential into three parts, A1, A2, and B spikes in that order from the foot. The B spike disappears on increasing the hyperpolarization, but A1 and A2 remain, indicating that B originates from the soma membrane, whereas A1 and A2 originate from the two axons of the bipolar cell. Thus the impulse invades the soma from two directions, one from the stimulated side, the other from the other side via the "parallel axons" and the "side-connections;" the latter are presumed to interconnect the axons. When the parallel axons are cut, conduction takes place across the soma with a greatly reduced safety factor and a prolonged conduction time. Neuron-to-neuron transmission takes place in either direction.

Abstract
A direct demonstration is given of interaction between specific neurons without impulses, via graded slow potentials electrotonically spread from one cell to another. Repetitive polarizing or depolarizing current pulses of 50 to 200 msec. and subthreshold intensity were passed through an intracellular electrode in the soma of a follower cell of the isolated ganglion. When the frequency is near the natural rhythm of impulse bursts corresponding to heart beats and arising in a pacemaker cell 5 to 10 mm. posteriorly, the bursts rapidly become synchronized with the pulses. The effect disappears upon withdrawing the intracellular electrode. Brief pulses or full spikes in the follower are not effective. Hyperpolarizing long pulses attract the burst to a fixed period after the end of the pulse, depolarizations after the beginning of the pulse. The natural rhythm promptly reappears when the pulses are stopped and occasionally breaks through during weak repetitive pulses. Current pulses in postsynaptic cells also alter the threshold of a presynaptic neuron to externally applied stimuli. Some kind of direct, low resistance pathway for electrotonic spread, discriminating against spikes because of their brevity, is inferred, providing a basis for subthreshold interaction which is specific and not by way of a field effect. Due to the sensitivity of modulation of ongoing rhythms, electrotonic currents can be effective even after decrementing over several millimeters.
