Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjects suffering from psychiatric disorders are frequently hospitalized due to medical comorbidities. In the present study, we analyzed consultation-liaison psychiatry (CLP) activity in a General Hospital, describing the sociodemographic, diagnostic, and therapeutic characteristics of the evaluated subjects, as well as reasons for consultation requests. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Data concerning psychiatric consultation performed at the Perugia General Hospital during a 1-year period (01/06/2022-20/06/2023) were collected and analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. RESULTS A total of 707 psychiatric consultations were performed. The primary reason that led to psychiatric consultations was psychomotor agitation. 85 (18.5%) patients attempted suicide; the most frequent modality was the assumption of drugs at non-therapeutic doses. The 72% of the sample (n=509) presented a clear-cut medical comorbidity. In most cases, subjects were referred to Community Mental Health and Addiction services (n=22, 32.4%). CONCLUSIONS CLP plays a crucial role in the perspective of the overall well-being of hospitalized subjects, but also for the overall management of complex cases. Despite this, a homogeneous approach with standardized guidelines is needed in this field.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to look for a new, simple, and fast method of assessing and monitoring indoor race performance and to assess the relationship between 20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m indoor rowing performances of youth rowers to evaluate their anaerobic profile. Methods: For three consecutive days, 17 young able-bodied male rowers (15.8 ± 2.0 years), performed three tests (20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m) on a rowing ergometer. Mean power (W20, W60, and W2000) and 2000 m time (t2000) were considered for the analysis. In addition, 14 athletes (15–18 years) performed a 20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m tests and used this as a control group. To define the anaerobic profile of the athletes, W20 and W60 were normalized as percentages of W2000. Associations between variables were determined by means of the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Results: Mean power decreased with increasing test duration (W20 = 525.1 ± 113.7 W; W60 = 476.1 ± 91.0 W; W2000=312.9 ± 56.0 W) and negative correlations emerged between t2000 (418.5 ± 23.1 s) and W20 (r = −0.952, p < 0.0001) and W60 (r = −0.930, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that W20 and W60 are significant predictors of 2000 m rowing ergometer performances. Furthermore, normalized W20 and W60 can be used to evaluate athletes and as a reference for planning anaerobic training sessions, on a rowing ergometer.

Abstract
Aim & Methods Extreme endurance exercise provides a valuable research model for understanding the adaptive metabolic response of older and younger individuals to intense physical activity. Here, we compare a wide range of metabolic and physiologic parameters in two cohorts of seven trained men, age 30 ± 5 years or age 65 ± 6 years, before and after the participants travelled ≈3000 km by bicycle over 15 days. Results Over the 15‐day exercise intervention, participants lost 2–3 kg fat mass with no significant change in body weight. V̇O2max did not change in younger cyclists, but decreased (p = 0.06) in the older cohort. The resting plasma FFA concentration decreased markedly in both groups, and plasma glucose increased in the younger group. In the older cohort, plasma LDL‐cholesterol and plasma triglyceride decreased. In skeletal muscle, fat transporters CD36 and FABPm remained unchanged. The glucose handling proteins GLUT4 and SNAP23 increased in both groups. Mitochondrial ROS production decreased in both groups, and ADP sensitivity increased in skeletal muscle in the older but not in the younger cohort. Conclusion In summary, these data suggest that older but not younger individuals experience a negative adaptive response affecting cardiovascular function in response to extreme endurance exercise, while a positive response to the same exercise intervention is observed in peripheral tissues in younger and older men. The results also suggest that the adaptive thresholds differ in younger and old men, and this difference primarily affects central cardiovascular functions in older men after extreme endurance exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate if the supplementation with Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) juice may affect plasma redox balance and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters following a maximal effort test, in young physically active women. METHODS A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled and crossover study comprising eight women (23.25 ± 2.95 years, 54.13 ± 9.05 kg, 157.75 ± 0.66 cm and BMI of 21.69 ± 0.66 kg/m2) was carried out. A juice containing OFI diluted in water and a Placebo solution were supplied (170 ml; OFI = 50 ml of OFI juice + 120 ml of water; Placebo = 170 ml beverage without Vitamin C and indicaxanthin). Participants consumed the OFI juice or Placebo beverage every day for 3 days, before performing a maximal cycle ergometer test, and for 2 consecutive days after the test. Plasma hydroperoxides and total antioxidant capacity (PAT), Skin Carotenoid Score (SCS) and HRV variables (LF, HF, LF/HF and rMSSD) were recorded at different time points. RESULTS The OFI group showed significantly lower levels of hydroperoxides compared to the Placebo group in pre-test, post-test and 48-h post-test. PAT values of the OFI group significantly increased compared to those of the Placebo group in pre-test and 48-h post-test. SCS did not differ between groups. LF was significantly lower in the OFI group 24-h after the end of the test, whereas rMSSD was significantly higher in the OFI group 48-h post-test. CONCLUSION OFI supplementation decreased the oxidative stress induced by intense exercise and improved autonomic balance in physically active women.

Abstract
This paper deals with the fabrication, modeling and experimental characterization of a monitorable and renewable graphene-based pollution filter. The main goal is to demonstrate a method to monitor the status of such a filter in real time during its operating phases: pollutant adsorption, saturation, and regeneration. The filter is realized by a disk of pressed graphene nanoplatelets. This is a low-cost type of graphene which has recently drawn great interest due to its potential use in large scale industrial production. Here the nanomaterial is obtained through the exfoliation method assisted by microwave irradiation, by exploiting the thermal expansion of commercial intercalated graphite, according to a low-cost and ecologically friendly procedure. The filter is used here to adsorb acetonitrile, a toxic water-soluble organic compound that is present in some industrial solvents and paints. The monitoring method is based on the interpretation of the time variation of the electrical impedance measured during filter operation. There are two main results of the paper: Firstly, the graphene filter is shown to be effective in adsorbing the above pollutant, with the additional feature of being fully renewable: all the pollutant can be removed from the filter without the need of costly physical or chemical processes. Secondly, monitoring of the time-evolution of the electrical impedance allows efficient detection of the different phases of the filter life cycle: clean, polluted, saturated and regenerated. This feature is of potential interest since it enables the predictive maintenance of such filters.

J Strength Cond Res 32(7): 2055-2060, 2018-Among the different factors affecting the outcome of elite rowing competitions, pacing strategy plays a relevant role. The purpose of this study was to analyze the race profiles of youth athletes competing at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games over a distance of 1,000 m. According to the competition outcome of sculling and sweep events, 96 youth (17-18 years) rowers (48 male and 48 female) were divided into winner (W), not winner (NW), qualified (Q), and not-qualified (NQ) athletes. The time during the 1,000-m race distance was considered at 0-500 m (T1) and 500-1000 m (T2). The average speed of T1 and T2 were normalized in relation to the average speed of the whole race. In both sexes, W rowers showed higher (p > 0.05) T2 values (100.8 ± 0.9%) with respect to T1 (99.2 ± 0.9%) ones. Female athletes showed a higher (p ≤ 0.05) T1 with respect to T2 in NW, Q, and NQ, whereas male athletes exhibited a higher T1 (p ≤ 0.05) than T2 speed only in NQ. While to be admitted to the final phase of the competition, the rowers tended to favor a positive race strategy (88%); during the final phase, a difference (p = 0.43) emerged for outcome, with the majority of medalists (67%) adopting a negative race strategy. These results suggest that winners have applied a different race strategy compared with the other groups in consequence to a higher efficiency of anaerobic metabolism.

Abstract
Relationships between heart rate recovery after exercise (HRR, baseline heart rate variability measures (HRV), and time to perform a 10Km running trial (t10Km) were evaluated in "master" athletes of endurance to assess whether the measured indexes may be useful for monitoring the training status of the athletes. Ten “master” athletes of endurance, aged 40-60 years, were recruited. After baseline measures of HRV, the athletes performed a graded maximal test on treadmill and HRR was measured at 1 and 2 minutes from recovery. Subsequently they performed a 10Km running trial and t10Km was related to HRV and HRR indexes. The time to perform a 10Km running trial was significantly correlated with baseline HRV indexes. No correlation was found between t10Km and HRR. Baseline HRV measures, but not HRR, were significantly correlated with the time of performance on 10km running in “master” athletes. The enhanced parasympathetic function at rest appears to be a condition to a better performance on 10km running. HRV can be simple and useful measurements for monitoring the training stratus of athletes and their physical condition in proximity of a competition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the autonomic system on the performance of repeated sprints, involving predominantly neuromuscular power, in young soccer players. METHODS Twelve young soccer players, selected for the Sicilian Regional Football Representative, mean age 15 years, were recruited. Baseline heart rate variability (HRV) was measured and indices of power spectral analysis (LF, HF, and LF/HF ratio) were calculated to evaluate the sympathovagal balance. The athletes performed 10 maximal 6-second cycling sprints (RS), interspersed with 30 seconds of recovery, to measure the peak power output (PP) represented by the highest power value recorded during a 6-second sprint, and the mean peak power output (MPP) represented by the average of all highest power values recorded within a repeated-sprint bout. RESULTS PP was negatively correlated with LF (ρ=-0.685, P=0.0141) and LF/HF (ρ=-0.709, P=0.0098), and positively correlated with HF (ρ=0.684, P=0.0142). MPP was negatively correlated with LF (ρ=-0.610, P=0.0350) and LF/HF (ρ=-0.606, P=0.0366), and positively correlated with HF (ρ=0.731, P=0.0070). CONCLUSIONS Our study shows that a baseline parasympathetic predominance in the autonomic nervous system balance is associated with a better neuromuscular contribution to performance, resulting in higher values of PP and MPP during brief repeated maximal cycling sprints. The assessment of baseline HRV before exercise may be useful for to monitor the physical condition of young soccer players and their readiness status to a higher performance.

Abstract
We propose a bottom-up procedure to fabricate an easy-to-engineer graphene-based device, consisting of a microstrip-like circuit where few-layer graphene nanoplatelets are used to contact two copper electrodes. The graphene nanoplatelets are obtained by the microwave irradiation of intercalated graphite, i.e., an environmentally friendly, fast and low-cost procedure. The contact is created by a bottom-up process, driven by the application of a DC electrical field in the gap between the electrodes, yielding the formation of a graphene carpet. The electrical resistance of the device has been measured as a function of the gap length and device temperature. The possible use of this device as a gas sensor is demonstrated by measuring the sensitivity of its electrical resistance to the presence of gas. The measured results demonstrate a good degree of reproducibility in the fabrication process, and the competitive performance of devices, thus making the proposed technique potentially attractive for industrial applications.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between mean power during 20 s all-out rowing ergometer test and 2000 m rowing ergometer performance, in 20 young male rowers (mean age 15.2±1.3 years). METHODS Mean power during 20 s all-out test (W20), maximal oxygen uptake during incremental test (VO2max), and anthropometric values, were measured and correlated with the time to perform a 2000 m trial (t2000). RESULTS W20 showed the highest correlation with t2000 (r=-0.947, P<0.0001). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed that W20, VO2max, and fat-free mass, were the variables most correlated with t2000, accounting for 95.1% of the variance, and that 89.7% of the variance in 2000 m rowing ergometer performance time was accounted for by W20. CONCLUSION These results suggest that W20 is an important predictor of 2000 m rowing ergometer performance, and the 20 s all-out test on rowing ergometer may be a useful monitoring tool for young rowers.

Abstract
A set of epoxy resin composites filled with 0.25-2.0 wt.% of commercially available ENSACO carbon black (CB) of high and low surface area (CBH and CBL respectively) has been produced. The results of broadband dielectric spectroscopy of manufactured CB/epoxy below the percolation threshold in broad temperature (200 K to 450 K) and frequency (20 Hz to 1 MHz) ranges are reported. The dielectric properties of composites below the percolation threshold are mostly determined by alpha relaxation in pure polymer matrix. The glass transition temperature for CB/epoxy decreases in comparison with neat epoxy resin due to the extra free volume at the polymer-filler interface. At room temperature, the dielectric permittivity is higher for epoxy loaded with CBH additives. In contrast, at high temperature, the electrical conductivity was found to be higher for composites with CBL embedded. The established influence of the CB surface area on the broadband dielectric characteristics can be exploited for the production of effective low-cost antistatic paints and coatings working at different temperatures.

Abstract
The early diagnosis and treatment of individuals harboring M. tuberculosis is key to ensuring the effectiveness of health programs aimed at the elimination of tuberculosis (TB). Monitoring for TB also has other important health care implications for the related immune pathology caused by the chronic inflammatory response to M. tuberculosis. Moreover, the recent introduction of biologic therapies for the treatment of several immune-mediated inflammatory diseases has shown unexpected high frequencies of reactivation of latent TB. The present cross-sectional study is aimed at estimating the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in different groups of subjects, either undergoing a routine program of screening for TB or a clinical monitoring of autoimmune or lung disorders, by analyzing their immune response in vitro to a pool of different M. tuberculosis antigens through an IFN-gamma-release assay (IGRA). We consecutively tested 1,644 subjects including health care workers (931), healthy immigrants from different countries (93), patients with a diagnosis of psoriasis (405), patients with lung inflammatory disease (60) or lung neoplasia (32) and a group of HIV-1 infected Italian subjects (120). The prevalence of IGRAs positive responses among health care workers was 8.9 percent. In comparison, significantly higher frequencies were found in healthy immigrant subjects (33.3%), similar to those found in inflammatory broncho-pneumopathies (34.5%) or lung cancer (29.6%). Interestingly, an unexpected high prevalence was also found in patients affected by psoriasis (18.0%), while HIV-infected subjects had values comparable to those of health care workers (10.8%). An age cut-off was determined and applied for each group by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in order to perform the statistical analysis among age-comparable groups. Multivariate analysis showed that the age and clinical conditions such as having a diagnosis of psoriasis or a lung inflammatory disease were independent risk factors for developing an IGRA positive response. This study highlights an unprecedented high prevalence of IGRA positive responses among patients affected by psoriasis and emphasizes the need for a preliminary assessment of LTBI before the administration of any biologic therapy based on cytokine antagonists such as anti-TNF-alpha. Moreover, screening for LTBI should be routinely performed in the presence of a chronic pulmonary disease.

Abstract
Desmin is the intermediate filament (IF) protein occurring exclusively in muscle and endothelial cells. There are other IF proteins in muscle such as nestin, peripherin, and vimentin, besides the ubiquitous lamins, but they are not unique to muscle. Desmin was purified in 1977, the desmin gene was characterized in 1989, and knock-out animals were generated in 1996. Several isoforms have been described. Desmin IFs are present throughout smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscle cells, but can be more concentrated in some particular structures, such as dense bodies, around the nuclei, around the Z-line or in costameres. Desmin is up-regulated in muscle-derived cellular adaptations, including conductive fibers in the heart, electric organs, some myopathies, and experimental treatments with drugs that induce muscle degeneration, like phorbol esters. Many molecules have been reported to associate with desmin, such as other IF proteins (including members of the membrane dystroglycan complex), nebulin, the actin and tubulin binding protein plectin, the molecular motor dynein, the gene regulatory protein MyoD, DNA, the chaperone alphaB-crystallin, and proteases such as calpain and caspase. Desmin has an important medical role, since it is used as a marker of tumors' origin. More recently, several myopathies have been described, with accumulation of desmin deposits. Yet, after almost 30 years since its identification, the function of desmin is still unclear. Suggested functions include myofibrillogenesis, mechanical support for the muscle, mitochondrial localization, gene expression regulation, and intracellular signaling. This review focuses on the biochemical interactions of desmin, with a discussion of its putative functions.

Abstract
The endocytic pathway is important in amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and beta-amyloid formation. Our studies have shown that endocytic pathway activation is a prominent and early feature of neurons in vulnerable regions of the brain in sporadic Alzheimer's disease. We report that endocytic pathway abnormalities are present not only in neurons, but in cerebral endothelia in Alzheimer's disease caused by certain APP mutations. The presence or absence of endocytic abnormalities distinguish subtypes of familial Alzheimer's disease linked to APP mutations from presenilin mutations, supporting the notion that different cellular pathways are involved in the altered processing of APP leading to increased beta-amyloid generation in certain of these different Alzheimer's disease subtypes.

Abstract
The effects of the insecticides Guthion (technical grade) and Guthion 2S (commercial formulation) on survival and growth of tadpoles of the Pacific treefrog Pseudacris regilla, and larvae of the Northwestern salamander Ambystoma gracile and the spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum were determined in continuous-flow exposures in the laboratory. Ninety-six-hour LC50 values were >3.6 mg/L for P. regilla with technical grade Guthion and 1.47 mg/L with the formulation Guthion 2S (measured as active ingredient Guthion). Ten-day LOAEL and NOAEL values based on length and weight for P. regilla with Guthion were 3.60 and 0.98 mg/L. LOAEL and NOAEL values based on length and weight for P. regilla with Guthion 2S were 0.17 and 0.07 mg/L. The 96-h LC50 for Guthion 2S was 1.67 and 1.90 mg/L for A. gracile and A. maculatum, respectively. LOAEL and NOAEL values based on length and weight for A. gracile with Guthion 2S were 0.22 and 0.10 mg/L; they were 0.11 and 0.03 mg/L for A. maculatum based on weight. These species are as similar in sensitivity as some fish species but are more tolerant to Guthion than most invertebrates.

Abstract
Calpain proteases influence intracellular signaling pathways and regulate cytoskeleton organization, but the neuronal and pathological roles of individual isoenzymes are unknown. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the activated form of calpain I is significantly increased while the fate of calpain II has been more difficult to address. Here, calpain II antibodies raised to different sequences within a cryptic region around the active site, which becomes exposed during protease activation, were shown immunohistochemically to bind extensively to neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), neuritic plaques, and neuropil threads in brains from individuals with AD. Additional 'pre-tangle' granular structures in neurons were also intensely immunostained, indicating calpain II mobilization at very early stages of NFT formation. Total levels of calpain II remained constant in the prefrontal cortex of AD patients but were increased 8-fold in purified NFT relative to levels of calpain I. These results implicate activated calpain II in neurofibrillary degeneration, provide further evidence for the involvement of the calpain system in AD pathogenesis, and imply that neuronal calcium homeostasis is altered in AD.

Abstract
The latex of 'Crown-of-Thorns' (Euphorbia milii var. hislopii, syn. E. splendens) has been shown to be a potent plant molluscicide that could be used against the snails which are intermediate hosts of Schistosoma trematodes. However, a comprehensive toxicological evaluation of the latex is necessary before its large-scale use in schistosomiasis control becomes possible. In fact, one cause for concern is the presence of tumor-promoting phorbol esters in several plants of the Euphorbiaceae family. Phorbol esters as well as a number of other known tumor promoters share the common property of inhibiting metabolic cooperation (i.e., exchange of low molecular weight molecules via gap junctions) between Chinese hamster V79 cells in monolayer cultures. The present study was undertaken to determine if latex of E. milii presents tumor promoter-like activity is this short-term in vitro assay. Samples of lyophilized E. milii latex were tested at a noncytotoxic concentration range (1, 10, 50 and 100 micrograms/ml) in three independent experiments. 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (10 ng/ml) was used as positive control. In all three assays, E. milii latex consistently inhibited metabolic cooperation between V79 cells at concentrations > or = 10 micrograms/ml. These results that E. milii latex contains tumor-promoting substances. These findings suggest that the use of crude latex as a molluscicide may pose a carcinogenic hazard to people who are continuously exposed to the product.

Abstract
A decrease in protein kinase C activity caused either by treatment with inhibitors, such as staurosporine or H-7, or by prolonged exposure to phorbol diesters has been proposed to be involved in the early events of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell differentiation. Because eight distinct isoforms of protein kinase C with discrete subcellular and tissue distributions have been described, we determined which isoforms are present in SH-SY5Y cells and studied their modifications during differentiation. The alpha, beta 1, delta, and epsilon isoforms were present in SH-SY5Y cells, as well as in rat brain. Protein kinase C-alpha and -beta 1 were the most abundant isoforms in SH-SY5Y cells, and immunoreactive protein kinase C-delta and -epsilon were present in much smaller amounts than in rat brain. Subcellular fractionation and immunocytochemistry demonstrated that all four isoforms are distributed bimodally in the cytoplasm and the membranes. Immunocytochemical analysis showed that the alpha isoform is associated predominantly with the plasma membrane and the processes extended during treatment with 12-tetradecanoyl-13-acetyl-beta-phorbol or staurosporine, and that protein kinase C-epsilon is predominantly membrane-bound. Its localization did not change during differentiation. Western blots of total SH-SY5Y cell extracts and of subcellular fractions probed with isoform-specific polyclonal antibodies showed that when SH-SY5Y cells acquired a morphologically differentiated phenotype, protein kinase C-alpha and -epsilon decreased, and protein kinase C-beta 1 did not change. These data suggest distinct roles for the different protein kinase C isoforms during neuronal differentiation, as well as possible involvement of protein kinase alpha and epsilon in neuritogenesis.

Abstract
Certain biological actions of phorbol esters cannot be duplicated by diacylglycerol (DAG). Thus, the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y differentiates when exposed to 12-tetradecanoyl-13-acetyl-beta-phorbol (TPA) and protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors, but not when exposed to DAG. To investigate the specific features of the phorbol diester molecule that might be responsible for these effects, we examined the extension of neurites, expression of neuron-specific enolase, and appearance and localization of phosphorylated high molecular weight neurofilament subunits (NF-H). TPA, 12-deoxy-13-tetradecanoyl-beta-phorbol, and staurosporine, but not DAG or 4-O-methyl-TPA, caused neurite outgrowth. Neuron-specific enolase was expressed in cells treated with TPA and 12-deoxy-13-tetradecanoyl-beta-phorbol but not with DAG, staurosporine, or 4-O-methyl-TPA. NF-H increased in the perikarya of cells treated with DAG and 4-O-methyl-TPA, in processes and to varying degrees in perikarya of TPA- and 12-deoxy-13-tetradecanoyl-beta-phorbol-treated cells, but much more in the processes than in the perikarya of staurosporine-differentiated cells. These findings and additional differences between the differentiation induced by TPA (a PKC activator) and staurosporine (a PKC inhibitor), including distinct morphology of the cell body and processes and time of appearance of the morphological phenotype, suggest that activators and inhibitors of PKC induce differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells by different mechanisms, and that the five-membered/seven-membered terpene ring region present in TPA must be intact for the induction of morphological differentiation.

Abstract
The investigation on steroidic fraction of Uncaria tomentosa, commonly called Una de gato, showed the presence of beta-sitosterol (60%), stigmasterol, and campesterol. The percentage of sterols have been carried out by GLC. The spectroscopic data 1H-NMR and MS of the three compounds are also reported, with the beta-sitosterol as the main sterol. Preliminary pharmacological investigations prove a moderate antiinflammatory activity.
