Abstract
Obesity has become an epidemic in several regions globally; it may lead to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Despite many therapies, all bariatric procedures fail in some patients. There is a lack of literature comparing treatment effects on specific metabolic indexes. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for relevant articles. GeMTC and R software were used to perform a network meta-analysis, draw forest plots, investigate the possibility of statistical heterogeneity, generate I2 statistics, rank probabilities, and evaluate relative effects of surgical procedures. All analyses were based on a Bayesian consistency model. We included 35 randomized controlled trials, comprising 2198 individuals and 13 interventions. For patients with high insulin resistance, single-anastomosis (mini-) gastric bypass (SAGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) may be effective options, with mean differences (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) of -4.45 (-9.04 to -.34) and -4.23 (-6.74 to -2.22), respectively, compared with control groups. For patients with severe dyslipidemia, in addition to SAGB and SG, duodenal switch (DS) may be an effective surgery, with mean differences (95% CIs) of -.97 (-1.39 to -.55), -1.98 (-3.76 to -.19), .53 (.04 to 1.04), and -.94 (-1.66 to -.16) compared with control groups in terms of triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations, respectively. In adult overweight patients with or without diabetes, SAGB and SG are most effective at ameliorating insulin resistance. SAGB, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass + omentectomy, and DS are useful for reducing triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-C. SG + omentectomy elevates HDL-C concentrations best. Adjustable gastric band and biliopancreatic diversion may not control insulin resistance or dyslipidemia well.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the clinical manifestations, imaging features, pathological features, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT)lymphoma concurrent with lung squamous cell carcinoma, and to improve the understanding of this disease. Methods: Using "Pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, squamous cell carcinoma" as the search term, from January 1, 1983 to August 31, 2020, a total of 3 cases were retrieved in the PubMed database. In the Wanfang database, using "Lung mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, lung squamous cell carcinoma" as the search term, from January 1, 1990 to August 31, 2020, a total of 1 related document was retrieved. In the CNKI database, "(lung) mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, (lung) squamous cell carcinoma" was used as the search term, and no relevant case reports were retrieved. Results: A 64-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of chest tightness and shortness of breath for 10 days, cough and fever for one day. Enhanced CT of the chest showed a soft tissue mass shadow in the right lower hilar area, with obstruction of the adjacent bronchus, and local mild enhancement, suggesting of right lower lung cancer. In addition, the CT scan also showed consolidated shadows in the lower lobes of both lungs, scattered nodules, multiple lymphadenopathy in the mediastinum, and a small amount of pleural effusion on the right. Under bronchoscopy, a cauliflower-like neoplasm was seen at the opening of the lower right basal section, about 7 mm×8 mm, and biopsy showed that part of the mucosal structure was destroyed, with disappearance of the squamous epithelial layer, and the nuclei were large and deeply stained, and some were distributed in nests, with poor keratinization and a small amount of necrosis, and fibrous tissue reaction. Immunostaining revealed that the tumor was positive for p40, CK5/6 and EGFR and negative forTTF-1, NapsinA, PD-L1, p53, with about 30% Ki-67 positive cells. A puncture biopsy of the right lower lobe showed that the alveolar cavity was filled with nested lymphoid cells, consisting of small lymphocytes, central cell-like cells and monocyte-like cells, with occasionally large cells. Immunostaining revealed CD20+, CD79a+, scattered CD3+, Bcl2+, SMA vascular+, Bcl6-, CK-, CD10-, CyclinD1-, with about 3% Ki-67 positive cells. The histopathological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue extranodal marginal zone lymphoma(MALT lymphoma),and lung squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusions: Pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma complicated with lung squamous cell carcinoma is rare and easy to be missed and misdiagnosed. Chest CT imaging shows single or multiple nodules, mass shadows or consolidation, often accompanied by air-bronchial signs in the lesion, bronchiectasis, ground glass density around the lesion, hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Occasionally, pleural effusion can be seen. Lung biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insulin resistance is a metabolic disorder that occurs in type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Genetic factors such as β3-adrenoceptor polymorphism (Trp64Arg) may be involved in IR and insulin secretion. However, their association is controversial. Therefore, the current meta-analysis was conducted to clarify the relationship between the Trp64Arg and IR. METHODS The literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science using the keywords "Receptors, Adrenergic, beta-3, Receptors, Adrenergic, Insulin Resistance, Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinase 3" from 2005 to February 7, 2021. We used a random-effects model to calculate the pooled effect size. We conducted subgroup analysis and regression analysis to identify sources of heterogeneity; and Egger's test and funnel plot were used to test publication bias. Finally, we conducted a sensitivity analysis. RESULTS We included eight papers with 1,586 subjects. There was a positive correlation between Trp64Arg mutation and insulin level (standardized mean difference = 0.20, 95% confidence intervals: 0.00 to 0.39, I2 = 57.6%, p = 0.016). However, there was no association between Trp64Arg and the homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) assessment. Egger's tests showed no publication bias; the sensitivity analysis showed that our results were stable. Regression analysis revealed no source of heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Trp64Arg may be associated with IR. European ancestry, obesity, plasma insulin level, and test status may be potential factors affecting the relationship between Trp64Arg and IR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the changes in the immune functions of CD8+ T cells in the spleen of mice following Echinococcus multilocularis infections at various doses and at different time points. METHODS The E. multilocularis protoscoleces were collected, and E. multilocularis infection was modeled in mice via the hepatic portal vein at doses of 50 (low-dose), 500 (medium-dose) and 2 000 protoscoleces (high-dose), while physiological saline served as controls. Mouse spleen was isolated 2 (earlystage), 12 (middle-stage) and 24 weeks post-infection (late-stage), and spleen lymphocytes were harvested. The phenotype of memory CD8+ T cells and 2B4 expression were quantified in the mouse spleen, and the secretion of interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-17A and IL-10 was measured. RESULTS A central-memory phenotype was predominant in the CD8+ T cells in the spleen of mice at the early stage of high-dose protoscolece infections, and the proportion of central-memory CD8+ T cells was significantly greater in the high-dose group than in the control group (35.50% ± 2.00% vs. 25.90% ± 2.46%, P < 0.01), while a effector- memory phenotype was predominant in the CD8+ T cells in the spleen of mice at the late stage of medium- and high-dose protoscolece infections, and the proportions of effector-memory CD8+ T cells were significantly greater in the medium- (25.70% ± 4.12%) and high-dose group (28.40% ± 4.12%) than in the control group (10.50% ± 6.45%) (P < 0.05). The proportions of the central-memory CD8+ T cells were significantly higher in the high-dose group than at middle and late stages than at the early stage (P < 0.01), and the proportion of effector-memory CD8+ T cells was significantly greater in the high-dose group at the late stage than at early and middle stages (P < 0.05). The secretion of IFN-γ and IL-17A by spleen CD8+ T cells was elevated in the low- and medium-dose groups at the early stage of infection, and high-dose protoscolece infection promoted the secretion of IFN-γ and TNF-α by spleen CD8+ T cells; however, the levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α were significantly lower at the late stage than at the early and middle stages (P < 0.05). In addition, high 2B4 expression was detected in spleen CD8+ T cells in the middle- and high-dose groups at the late stage of infection, and the 2B4 expression was significantly higher in the medium(4.73% ± 1.56%) and high-dose groups (4.94% ± 1.90%) than in the low-dose group (2.49% ± 0.58%) and the control group (2.92% ± 0.60%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS E. multilocularis may be killed and eliminated through the host immune responses at the middle and late stages of low- and medium-dose protoscolece infections, while high-dose protoscolece infections may trigger the upregulation of 2B4 expression in mouse spleen CD8+ T cells at the late stage, which leads to immune exhaustion and the resultant chronic infections.

Abstract
Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) is a type of bead-like, fibrous and reticular substances that is actively released by activated inflammatory neutrophils during the stage of infections or inflammatory responses. NET, which is composed of chromatin DNA and multiple intracellular protein components, may wrap pathogens to limit their diffusions. Meanwhile, NET may kill pathogens via a wide range of antibacterial proteins, which is considered as the third antibacterial mechanism of neutrophils, in addition to phagocytosis and degranulation. Recent studies have shown the involvement of NET in the immune response against parasitic infections. This review summarizes the advances of NETs in the immune responses against parasitic infections, so as to provide insights into the elucidation of the pathogenesis and development of therapeutics of parasitic diseases.

Abstract
Background: Radiotherapy is a routine treatment for pelvic cancer patients. While it had been proven effective, gastrointestinal side effects remain a concern, impairing the quality of life. A few studies focused on the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment to alleviate radiation-induced gastrointestinal complications. This meta-analysis aimed to critically review and summarize existing literature, assessing the effectiveness of HBO therapy for the treatment of radiation-induced gastrointestinal side effects. Methods: Medical literature search was performed with PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE up to March 14, 2019. Literatures about HBO treatment upon patients undergoing pelvic cancer (endometrial, cervix, rectum, or prostate cancers) radiotherapy were collected, and the effects of HBO treatment on radiotherapy-induced gastrointestinal complications were evaluated. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled effect size. Subgroup analyses were performed to search for sources of heterogeneity. Publication bias was detected with Funnel plots and Egger's test. Results: Three different radiotherapy-related gastrointestinal complications, including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and pain, were analyzed after screening. It was revealed that the improvement rates were considerable in rectal bleeding (0.81, 95% CI: 0.74–0.89) and diarrhea (0.75, 95% CI: 0.61–0.90) and slightly in pain (0.58, 95% CI: 0.38–0.79). Subgroup analysis revealed factors that significantly influenced the heterogeneity of rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and pain (evaluation criteria, follow-up time, and scoring system, respectively). No significant publication bias was detected. Conclusion: HBO treatment might have the potential to alleviate radiotherapy-related gastrointestinal complications, including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and pain, but more data are needed for further conclusions. Other symptoms were not further analyzed, as the number of studies was insufficient. More large-scale and prospective studies are needed for better evaluation of HBO's therapeutic values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is considered effective for weight loss and for treatment of many obesity-related metabolic diseases. Ghrelin is an essential orexigenic peptide that plays an indispensable role in controlling body weight and energy homeostasis of post-operative patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate changes in the level of fasting total ghrelin following RYGB. METHODS A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library until April 2018 with keywords "ghrelin" and "gastric bypass" was performed in accordance with the MOOSE guidelines and PRISMA statement. Three reviewers independently selected the studies and extracted data. Quality assessment of the included studies was undergone. A random effects model was employed to calculate overall effect sizes. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were subsequently performed. RESULTS Sixteen studies with 325 patients were included. We found ghrelin levels had an increasing tendency (SMD = 0.30; 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.57) despite moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 58%). Subsequent subgroup analysis indicated that ghrelin levels decreased (SMD = - 0.49; 95% CI = - 0.98 to 0.00) in the short term (≤ 3 months) and increased (SMD = 0.46; 95% CI = 0.22 to 0.69) in the long term (> 3 months) after RYGB. Meta-regression showed that gastric pouch volume, alimentary limb length and biliopancreatic limb length were not associated with changes in ghrelin levels. CONCLUSION Fasting total ghrelin levels decreased in the short term (≤ 3 months) and increased in the long term (> 3 months) after RYGB.

Abstract
Background: Resistin, a cysteine-rich polypeptide encoded by the RETN gene, which plays an important role in many mechanisms in rodent studies, including lipid metabolism, inflammation and insulin resistance. Nevertheless, the relationship between resistin and insulin resistance in humans is under debate. The present study was designed to clarify the correlation between resistin and insulin resistance. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library until March 3, 2019 with the keywords “resistin” and “insulin resistance.” Funnel plots and Egger's test were used to detect publication bias. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled effect size. Subgroup analysis and meta regression was performed to identify the sources of heterogeneity. Results: Fifteen studies were included in our systematic review. Among them, 10 studies with Pearson coefficients were used for meta-analysis. We found resistin levels were weakly correlated with insulin resistance in those with T2DM and obesity (r = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.06–0.35, I2 = 59.7%, P = 0.003). Nevertheless, subgroup analysis suggested that circulating resistin levels were significantly positively correlated with insulin resistance in individuals with hyperresistinemia (≥14.8 ng/ml) (r = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.35–0.68, I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.513). And there was no relationship between circulating resistin and insulin resistance in those with normal circulating resistin levels (<14.8 ng/ml) (r = 0.08, 95% CI: −0.01–0.18, I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.455). Publication bias was insignificant (Egger's test P = 0.592). Conclusion: In T2DM and obese individuals, resistin levels were positively correlated with insulin resistance in those with hyperresistinemia, but not in those with normal circulating resistin levels.

Abstract
Betatrophin [also known as lipasin, angiopoietin‑like 8 (ANGPTL8), refeeding induced in fat and liver (RIFL), or hepatocellular carcinoma‑associated gene TD26], a 22‑kDa protein in the angiopoietin‑like family, is a liver‑derived hormone that promotes pancreatic β‑cell proliferation and lipid metabolism. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of recombinant betatrophin on β‑cell regeneration in a neonatal streptozotocin (STZ)‑induced diabetic rat model. One‑day‑old Wistar rats were injected with STZ (100 mg/kg), followed by intraperitoneal administration of betatrophin to the STZ‑injected rats for 6 days. Plasma glucose and body weight were monitored. On days 4 and 7, expression levels of pancreatic duodenal homeobox gene‑1 (PDX‑1), the Bax/B‑cell lymphoma‑2 (Bcl‑2) ratio and plasma insulin were assessed, and the β‑cell proliferation rate was determined. Pancreatic islet area and number were determined at 10 weeks. It was found that betatrophin treatment alleviated STZ‑induced hyperglycemia, elevated pancreatic expression levels of Bcl‑2, PDX‑1, plasma insulin levels and the β‑cell proliferation rate on days 4 and 7. Long‑term betatrophin treatment improved glucose tolerance, associated with improved plasma insulin levels and β‑cell mass. These results suggest that early administration of betatrophin promotes β‑cell proliferation in STZ‑induced diabetic neonates and prevents the development of diabetes in adults.

Abstract
Nickel⁻titanium (Ni-Ti) alloy has been selected as stent material given its good biocompatibility. In this study, experimental research on this material was conducted using magnetic field-assisted electrical discharge machining (EDM). The surface topography of the machined workpiece was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Hydrophobicity was measured by using an optical contact angle measuring instrument. The roughness values of different positions on the surface were measured using a TR200 roughness instrument. Results showed that the composite structure of solidification bulge⁻crater⁻pore⁻particle can be prepared on the surface of the Ni-Ti alloy through magnetic mixed EDM using suitable processing parameters. Moreover, the contact angle of the surface reaches 138.2°.

Abstract
Background: Pre-diabetes is a risk factor for full-blown diabetes; it presents opportunities to prevent the actual diseases. It is therefore essential to identify effective preventive strategies, and to clarify the direction of future research. Methods: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched using key terms (Supplementary Table 1). We applied network meta-analysis to multiple comparisons among various diabetic preventive strategies, including lifestyle and pharmacological interventions; traditional meta-analysis for the synthesis of basal metabolic changes after interventions; and trial sequential analysis for determinations as to whether analysis conclusions meet expectations. Results: We included 32 randomized controlled trials comprising 43,669 patients and 14 interventions in the meta-analysis. Both lifestyle modifications and anti-diabetic medications improved physical conditions, including weight loss, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Network meta-analysis suggested that the progression of diabetes could be delayed to varying degrees by lifestyle and pharmacological interventions, except for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, statins, sulfonylureas and vitamin D. The risk ratios (RR) [95% credible interval (CrI)] compared with control were: GLP-1RAs 0.28 (0.15, 0.50), Orlistat 0.33 (0.18, 0.55), TZM 0.33 (0.16, 0.63), TZD 0.39 (0.27, 0.53), LST 0.54 (0.32, 0.88), lifestyle 0.58 (0.49, 0.67), LSM 0.62 (0.45, 0.80), GI 0.66 (0.46, 0.88), SU 0.67 (0.40, 1.00), Vitamin D 0.91 (0.59, 1.40), ACEI 0.93 (0.62, 1.40), statins 1.20 (0.84, 1.60). Conclusions: In adults with pre-diabetes, firm evidence supports the notion that lifestyle modifications and metformin reduces the incidence of diabetes with an average of 20% relative risk reduction, while statins increase the relative risk 20%. We found that lifestyle modifications, promising long-term strategies involving three factors (nutrition, exercise, and weight loss) contribute to health by reducing BMI, body weight, waist and hip circumference, systolic and diastolic pressure, fasting, and 2-h postprandial blood glucose, total cholesterol and by increasing HDL. We made this determination using TSA, avoiding further waste of experimental resources.

Abstract
Background: Ghrelin, a peptide mainly produced by stomach X-A cells. It plays a pivotal role in the regulation of food intake and energy metabolism, including glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. However, the correlation between circulating ghrelin levels and insulin resistance in obesity remained uncertain. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association between ghrelin and IR in obesity. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science until April 18, 2018 with the keywords “ghrelin” and “insulin resistance.” Two independent reviewers selected studies and assessed data. Subgroup analyses were performed to search for sources of heterogeneity. Funnel plots and Egger's test were used to detect publication bias. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled effect size. Results: Ten studies with 546 participants were included in this meta-analysis. We found that ghrelin levels were negatively correlated with IR in obese individuals. (r = −0.31; 95% CI: −0.45 to −0.18). Subgroup analysis revealed that circulating ghrelin levels were significantly negatively correlated with IR in people with normal fasting blood glucose (FBG) (<6.9 mmol/dl) (r = −0.28; 95% CI: −0.47 to −0.09, I2 = 39.5%), while there was no relationship between circulating ghrelin levels and IR in the high FBG group (>6.9 mmol/dl) (r = −0.15; 95% CI: −0.33 to 0.03, I2 = 0.0%). Publication bias was insignificant (Egger's test: P = 0.425). Conclusion: In obesity, circulating ghrelin levels were significantly negative correlated with insulin resistance in individuals with normal fasting blood glucose.

Abstract
Studies of nesfatin-1 in glucose metabolism have become a topic of interest recently, however, the specific receptor for nesfatin-1 has not yet been identified. Some studies hinted at a connection between nesfatin-1 and the ghrelin receptor, growth hormone secretagogue receptor. Therefore, we aimed to study the role of GHSR in the glycemic effects of nesfatin-1 as well as its downstream pathways. We employed C57/BL6 mice (wild type and GHSR knockout mice) eating a normal chow diet and a high fat diet in this study, and the experimental technique included western blot, real-time PCR, immunofluorescence and ELISA. We found that in mice fed a normal chow diet (NCD), nesfatin-1 improved glucose tolerance, up-regulated AKT kinase (AKT) mRNA levels and phosphorylation and GLUT4 membrane translocation in skeletal muscle. These effects were blocked by co-injection of GHSR antagonist [D-Lys3]-GHRP-6 and were attenuated in GHSR knockout mice. In mice fed high-fat diet (HFD), nesfatin-1 not only exerted the effects observed in NCD mice, but also suppressed appetite and raised AKT levels in liver tissues that also required GHSR. Peripheral nesfatin-1 suppressed c-fos expression of GHSR immunoreactive neurons induced by fasting in hypothalamic nuclei, indicating that nesfatin-1 inhibited the activation of central GHSR. We concluded that the effects of nesfatin-1 on food intake and glucose metabolism were GHSR-dependent, and that the glycemic effect was associated with AKT and GLUT4. This study should stimulate further exploration of the nesfatin-1 receptor.

BACKGROUND In recent years, many clinical studies have confirmed the value of laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy (LAG) in gastric cancer surgery, especially in early stages. But the safety and oncologic adequacy of laparoscopy-assisted D2 radical gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer are still in debate. We conducted a prospective randomized trial to compare open versus laparoscopy-assisted D2 radical gastrectomy in advanced gastric cancer. METHODS For this study, 123 patients who had been diagnosed endoscopically with gastric cancer were randomly assigned to either LAG (n = 61) or open gastrectomy (OG) (n = 62) which ran from March 2008 to December 2009. Clinical characteristics, operative findings, postoperative recovery, morbidity, pathological report and survival rate were compared. D2 lymph node dissection was performed in 49 patients in the LAG group and 47 patients in the OG group with advanced gastric cancer. We adopt sub-group analysis in this paper. RESULTS The clinical characteristics of patients in the LAG and OG groups who were in the advanced stage, included age, sex, BMI and concurrent illness, and their ECOG scores were well matched. Operative findings, postoperative recovery, morbidity, pathological findings including tumor location, depth of invasion, TNM stage, histological grade and surgical extension in the two groups were also similar. Compared to the OG group, the mean operating time was significantly longer for the LAG group (267.88 ± 54.284 min in the LAG group vs. 182.02 ± 41.016 min in the OG group, p = 6.383 × 10(-13)); the mean number of days when body temperature exceeded 37°C was significantly shorter in the LAG group (p = 6.34 × 10(-8)). There were no postoperative deaths in both the groups. The postoperative morbidity rate was 12.24% in the LAG group and 19.15% in the OG group with no significant difference (p = 0.357). However, pulmonary infection was observed more frequently in the OG group (p = 0.038). After a mean follow-up of 22.1354 months (from 4 to 36 months), 14 and 15 patients died of gastric cancer in the LAG and OG groups, respectively. Two and one patient died of nongastric cancer in the LAG and OG groups, respectively. The overall survival rates were 67.1% and 53.8% in the LAG and OG groups, respectively. The estimated mean survival time was 29.387 months in the LAG group and 28.978 months in the OG group. There was no statistically significant difference in the overall survival rate for patients in both groups - LAG and OG (log-rank test, p = 0.911, Tarone Ware test, p = 0.994, and Breslow test, p = 0. 961). CONCLUSION LAG with D2 lymph node dissection is a safe and feasible procedure with adequate lymphadenectomy, good curability and survival rate for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer.

Abstract
Influenza is a topic of wide public concern, particularly because of the recent emergence of avian flu. The myxovirus resistance (Mx) protein has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on influenza virus and is therefore of great interest. This study examines the Mx protein in 8 local Chinese chicken breeds and 2 exotic chicken breeds. Amino acid 631, found in the Mx GTPase effector domain, was examined in 534 individuals by comparing PCR results, and individuals were separated into the A/A genotype or the G/G genotype, depending on whether amino acid 631 is an Asn or Ser. In the native breed, the frequency of G/G homozygotes is 0.780 (294/377). The Mx expression levels in tissues and chicken embryo fibroblast cells with different genotypes were also studied. The A/A individuals from Beijing-You and White Leghorn breeds had higher Mx expression levels than G/G individuals. The liver, heart, and spleen had higher expression levels than muscle or kidney. The A/A chicken embryo fibroblast cells had higher antiviral activity against vesicular stomatitis virus and Newcastle disease. We provide the first report examining the expression level and antiviral activity of different Mx alleles of nucleotide 2216(S631N) genotypes. This study lays a good foundation for correlative studies examining genotype and antiviral function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Omentum is well known for its immunocompetence and good blood supply; and therefore, is being used in various complex thoracic procedures. Specially, in situations when staplers, sealants and total parenteral nutrition may not be used because of financial constraints, omentum may prove very helpful in preventing post-operative fatal complications. METHODS A retrospective review of 61 patients was undertaken. Patients were categorized into two groups. In group I, omentum was sutured to the anastomosis for prophylaxis of leak from gastro-oesophagectomy after radical surgery for cancer of cardia and oesophagus. In group II, it was used for therapeutic purpose, to control diffuse air leak from lung parenchyma after chest wall and invaded lung resection for malignant chest wall tumours (subgroup A) and treatment of post pneumonectomy bronchopleural fistula for NSCLC of right lung (subgroup B). Gastro-oesophagectomy, closure of bronchial stump and suturing of lung parenchyma after wedge resection was done with manual suturing technique only. RESULTS Group I: There were 57 patients with the diagnosis of cancer of cardia and oesophagus, who underwent radical surgery. Transthoracic approach was used in 96.5% patients, whereas 3.5% patients underwent transhiatal resection. Anastomotic level was located in chest in 68.4% and in neck in 31.6% patients. The leakage rate was 5.4%. Group II: There were three patients in subgroup A, all with lesions located in left side of chest wall. There was one patient in subgroup B. Chest tube was removed after a mean time of 2 days and after 4 days in subgroup A and B, respectively. There was 1 mortality (1.6%) secondary to chylothorax. CONCLUSION Use of pedicled omentum appears to be a very simple technique to prevent the anastomotic leak after radical surgery for cancer of cardia and oesophagus, and to seal the diffuse parenchymal pulmonary leak after various procedures in thorax.

Abstract
A survey was done in 15 typical villages, 150 soil and 86 vegetable plant samples were taken in Jiaxin prefecture of the Taihu Lake region, northern Zhejian province. Results indicate that after 15-20 years land use changed from the paddy rice-wheat (or oilseed rape) double cropping system, to a continuous vegetable land has caused soil quality dramatic change. (1) Acidification: average soil pH was 5.4; about 61% of total samples were pH < 5.5. It was 0.9 units lower than 10 years ago with same upland vegetable cultivation and was 1.2 units lower than soil pH of paddy rice-wheat (or oilseed rape) rotation. (2) Fertilizer salt accumulation: the average salt content was 0.28%, among these about 36.2% of the total samples contained more than 0.3%. (3) Nitrate N and available phosphorus (P) over accumulation: on average it was 279 mg NO3-N/kg, and 45-115 mg P/kg. Nitrate N four times higher and available P 4-10 times more than it is in present paddy rice-wheat rotation soils respectively. This has caused wide concern because of possible groundwater and well drinking water pollution by leached nitrate N and the P losses to water by runoff from vegetable lands induce surface water eutrophication.

Abstract
A new male patient associated with a pregnancy wastage was detected in China. Cytogenetic analyses including G-banding, chromosome painting and observation of synaptonemal complexes (SCs) demonstrated that the pregnancy wastage was associated with a balanced reciprocal translocation t(11;18) (q13.3; q23). The proband was the carrier of the translocation and his karyotype was 46,XY,t(11;18)(11pter-->11q13.3:: 18q23-->18qter; 18pter-->18q23::11q13.3-->11qter). The pedigree was analyzed based on a G-banded karyotype of the nine familial members. The translocation chromosomes came from the proband's mother. The result of the SC observation in the proband showed that each of the spermatocytes displayed one quadrivalent during their pachytene stages. In the quadrivalents, there existed homologous and nonhomologous synapses and the latter occurred widely during early, middle and late pachytene stages. The reasons and genetic basis of the pregnancy wastage are discussed.

Abstract
The Tibet experiment, operating at Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level), is the lowest energy air shower array, and the new high-density array constructed in 1996 is sensitive to gamma-ray air showers at energies as low as 3 TeV. With this new array, the Crab Nebula was observed in multi-TeV gamma-rays and a signal was detected at the 5.5 sigma level. We also obtained the energy spectrum of gamma-rays in the energy region above 3 TeV which partially overlaps those observed with imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes. The Crab spectrum observed in this energy region can be represented by the power-law fit dJ&parl0;E&parr0;&solm0;dE=&parl0;4.61+/-0.90&parr0;x10-12&parl0;E&solm0;3 TeV&parr0;-2.62+/-0.17 cm-2 s-1 TeV-1. This is the first observation of gamma-ray signals from point sources with a conventional air shower array using scintillation detectors.

Abstract
The behavior and morphology of sex chromosomes pairing in spermatocytes of the brown rat have been studied by surface spreading, silver and phosphotungstic acid(PTA) staining techniques. The results are as follows. Sex chromosomes axial cores thicken before X and Y pairing. X Y pairing is delayed until early pachytene. The first pairing initiation site is located on telomere of the short arms of X and Y chromosomes. The second pairing initiation site is located on teltomere of the long arms of X and Y chromosomes or on the interstitial position of the long arms of X and Y. Pycnosis speed of sex axial cores is different with different stages during prophase I of meiosis. In middle Pachytene the almost whole Y is fully paired in SC association with about one-third the X. On the region of X-YSC, lateral elements of X-YSC divide into two skeins, bubble appears on one of the two skeins and the unpaired X and Y axial cores are in variable forms. X Y pairing initiation sites, relationship of X Y pairing and genetic homology and mechanism of thickening and variable X Y axial cores were discussed.

Abstract
delta 1-Pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) catalyzes the first two steps in proline biosynthesis in plants. The Vigna aconitifolia P5CS cDNA was expressed in Escherichia coli, and the enzyme was purified to homogeneity. The Vigna P5CS exhibited two activities, gamma-glutamyl kinase (gamma-GK) and glutamic acid-5-semialdehyde (GSA) dehydrogenase. The gamma-GK activity of the P5CS was detected by the hydroxamate assay and by a [14C]glutamate assay. The native molecular mass of the P5CS was 450 kDa with six identical subunits. The Vigna P5CS showed a Km of 3.6 mM for glutamate, while the Km for ATP was 2.7 mM. The gamma-GK activity of the P5CS was competitively inhibited by proline, while its GSA dehydrogenase activity was insensitive to proline. In addition, a protein inhibitor of the P5CS was observed in the plant cell. Western blot showed that the level of the P5CS was enhanced in Vigna root under salt stress. A single substitution of an alanine for a phenylalanine at amino acid residue 129 of the P5CS resulted in a significant reduction of proline feedback inhibition. The 50% inhibition values of gamma-GK activity of the wild type and the mutant P5CS were observed at 5 mM and 960 mM proline, respectively. The other properties of the mutant P5CS remained unchanged. These results may allow genetic manipulation of proline biosynthesis and overproduction of proline in plants for conferring water stress tolerance.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide reductase from Wolinella succinogenes, an enzyme containing one heme c and four Cu atoms/subunit of Mr = 88,000, was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at 9.2 GHz from 6 to 80 K. In the oxidized state, low spin ferric cytochrome c was observed with gz = 3.10 and an axial Cu resonance was observed with g parallel = 2.17 and g perpendicular = 2.035. No signals were detected at g values greater than 3.10. For the Cu resonance, six hyperfine lines each were observed in the g parallel and g perpendicular regions with average separations of 45.2 and 26.2 gauss, respectively. The hyperfine components are attributed to Cu(I)-Cu(II) S = 1/2 (half-met) centers. Reduction of the enzyme with dithionite caused signals attributable to heme c and Cu to disappear; exposure of that sample to N2O for a few min caused the reappearance of the g = 3.10 component and a new Cu signal with g parallel = 2.17 and g perpendicular = 2.055 that lacked the simple hyperfine components attributed to a single species of half-met center. The enzyme lost no activity as the result of this cycle of reduction and reoxidation. EPR provided no evidence for a Cu-heme interaction. The EPR detectable Cu in the oxidized and reoxidized forms of the enzyme comprised about 23 and 20% of the total Cu, respectively, or about one spin/subunit. The enzyme offers the first example of a nitrous oxide reductase which can have two states of high activity that present very different EPR spectra of Cu. These two states may represent enzyme in two different stages of the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
For the purpose of one stage correction of severe congenital Talipes equinovarus, a new technique was designed to fashion a fascio-cutaneous flap from the redundant tissue on dorsolateral area of the foot, and it is then transposed to cover the defect left on the posteromedial part of the same foot following complete releasing and correcting the contractured soft tissue and lengthening the shortened tendons. This newly designed method was applied to 26 feet of severe congenital talipes equino-varus in 16 children aged 3/4-4 years. The foot deformity has been beautifully corrected and the transposed flap soundly healed in every foot without complication of any kind. The surgical procedures are fully described in the paper.

From 1948 to 1985, a total of 630 cases of choriocarcinoma and invasive mole were treated in our hospital. The methods of treatment varied in different periods of time. In the third period (1972-1985), 5 Fu and/or KSM were the main therapeutic agents used in the treatment of 110 cases of choriocarcinoma and 99 cases of invasive mole. Metastases were observed in more than 90% of cases of choriocarcinoma and nearly 1/4 belonged to stage IV. The mortality of choriocarcinoma decreased from 84.3% to 32.7% after treatment and that of invasive mole from 32.4% to 8.1%. 43 of 80 patients treated with chemotherapy alone conceived after recovery, resulting in a total of 50 pregnancies including 31 term deliveries by 28 women. All the children are normal and healthy, the eldest being 11 years old now.

Abstract
There appears to be only a weak correlation between genome size and the corresponding total length of a complete set of synaptonemal complexes (SCs) based on published evidence for several fungal, plant, and animal species. This result is unexpected, considering the strong positive correlations between genome size (DNA amount) and total chromosome length and volume and between relative lengths of chromosomes and SCs. Because the observed weak correlation was based on limited data, we systematically investigated the relationship between genome size and SC length, using ten higher plant species. Two-dimensional spreads of SCs from primary microsporocytes at pachytene were prepared using a hypotonic bursting technique. The SC spreads were examined either by light or electron microscopy, and the lengths of at least ten complete sets of SCs were measured for each of the ten species. Additionally, the genome size of each species was determined from pollen tetrad protoplasts using flow cytometry. A strong correlation (r = 0.97) between total SC length and genome size was observed for higher plants, indicating a constant amount of DNA is associated with a given length of SC, at least when averaged over the whole genome.
