Abstract
BACKGROUND Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis is associated with pre-existing arterial atherosclerosis of AVF and results in significant morbidity and hospitalization for hemodialysis patients. The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a noninvasive method of assessing atherosclerosis. This study was to examine whether ABI is a significant predictor for AVF stenosis. METHODS This was a retrospective, longitudinal cohort study. Patients with hemodialysis between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2022 were reviewed. ABI was assessed in January 2016. AVF stenosis was diagnosed by fistulography. RESULTS A total of 82 patients were included. Forty-two patients experienced AVF stenosis. The univariate logistic regression analysis showed that AVF stenosis was associated with age (OR: 1.045, p = 0.033), DM status (OR: 5.529, p = 0.013), 7-year averaged cholesterol level (OR: 1.018, p = 0.034), 7-year averaged triglyceride level (OR: 1.007, p = 0.017), and ABI (OR: 0.011, p < 0.001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, ABI was a strong predictor for AVF stenosis (OR: 0.036, p = 0.023). Then, a cut-off point of ABI with optimal sensitivity and specificity for AVF stenosis was 1.01. An analysis of time to events with adjustment for other variables showed that patients with ABI < 1.01 were significantly associated with AVF stenosis (HR: 3.859, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS ABI below 1.01 was associated with AVF stenosis. This finding may be useful in tailoring surveillance programs for monitoring AVF function.

Abstract
Coral reefs in the Central Indo-Pacific region comprise some of the most diverse and yet threatened marine habitats. While reef monitoring has grown throughout the region in recent years, studies of coral reef benthic cover remain limited in spatial and temporal scales. Here, we analysed 24,365 reef surveys performed over 37 years at 1972 sites throughout East Asia by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network using Bayesian approaches. Our results show that overall coral cover at surveyed reefs has not declined as suggested in previous studies and compared to reef regions like the Caribbean. Concurrently, macroalgal cover has not increased, with no indications of phase shifts from coral to macroalgal dominance on reefs. Yet, models incorporating socio-economic and environmental variables reveal negative associations of coral cover with coastal urbanisation and sea surface temperature. The diversity of reef assemblages may have mitigated cover declines thus far, but climate change could threaten reef resilience. We recommend prioritisation of regionally coordinated, locally collaborative long-term studies for better contextualisation of monitoring data and analyses, which are essential for achieving reef conservation goals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-definition transcranial electrical theta burst superimposing direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS-eTBS) not only incorporates the therapeutic advantages of tDCS and TBS but enhances stimulation focality and practicality. However, the applicability of this innovative neuromodulatory device in post-stroke rehabilitation remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the HD-tDCS-eTBS on upper extremity (UE) motor function in patients with chronic stroke. METHODS A patient-blinded, randomized controlled study was conducted. Twenty-four participants were randomly assigned into either the active HD-tDCS-eTBS group or sham HD-tDCS-eTBS group. Both groups received 20 minutes of active/sham HD-tDCS-eTBS combined with 30 minutes of conventional UE rehabilitation each time, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Outcome measures including the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity, Wolf Motor Function Test, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Finger-Nose Test, and Modified Ashworth Scale were assessed before and immediately after the intervention period. RESULTS Spasticity of shoulder adductor (P = .05), elbow extensor (P = .04), and thumb flexor (P < .01) were significantly reduced in the active HD-tDCS-eTBS group versus the sham group. Nonsignificant trends in the improvements of most other outcome measures were in favor of the active HD-tDCS-eTBS group with moderate to large effect sizes (P = .06-.26, ηp2 = 0.06-0.16). No severe adverse events except for slight skin redness under the stimulus electrode was detected after the HD-tDCS-eTBS. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support that HD-tDCS-eTBS is safe and has therapeutic potential for post-stroke UE motor rehabilitation. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT04278105).

Abstract
Purpose The incidence of aspergillosis is increasing, and the risk factors for infection include cancer, admission to the intensive care unit, chronic pulmonary diseases, immunocompromised status, and taking immunomodulatory drugs. There are limited data about the incidence of aspergillosis in patients with different types of cancer. The aim of our study was to survey the incidence of aspergillosis in different cancer types from 2006 to 2017. Patients and Methods Data were collected from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database and International Classification of Diseases, 9th, 10th Revision, and Clinical Modification codes for diagnosing aspergillosis. Patients with a history of aspergillosis before cancer were excluded, and the secondary outcome was the risk of mortality in cancer patients with and without aspergillosis after 1 year. Results Among 951 cancer patients with a diagnosis of aspergillosis, there were 614 hematopoietic and reticuloendothelial system patients, 100 lung cancer patients, and 73 lymphoma cancer patients. The overall incidence rates of aspergillosis tended to increase significantly from 2006 to 2017 (from 3.50 to 13.37 per 10,000 person-years, p value: <0.0001). Regarding sex, the incidence rates of aspergillosis in males and females were 12.52 and 7.53 per 10,000 person-years, respectively. Patients with a diagnosis of aspergillosis had a 2.30-fold (95% CI: 2.14–2.48, p value: <0.0001) higher risk of mortality than those without aspergillosis. Conclusion The incidence of aspergillosis was increased in cancer patients, and cancer patients with aspergillosis had a significantly higher risk of mortality than those without aspergillosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) due to dialysis is the major factor causing morbidity and mortality factor for patients undergoing hemodialysis and is associated with additional costs for these patients. This study investigated the effect of a novel care program in terms of reducing CRBSIs for hemodialysis patients with nontunneled (temporary) catheters inserted in their femoral veins. METHODS This study included dialysis patients (inpatients and outpatients) from July 2018 to September 2019, covering two periods, pre-intervention (baseline period) and intervention with a novel care program (novel care period). The novel care program was initiated on December 1, 2018. The CRBSI rates (/1000 catheter-days) for the baseline and novel care periods were compared, and the characteristics of the pathogens were determined. FINDINGS Of a total of 72 patients, 33 were from the baseline period and 39 were from the novel care period. Patients in the baseline and novel care periods had the catheter inserted in their femoral veins for a median of 20 and 29 days, respectively. The CRBSI rate decreased by 82.63%, from 8.52/1000 catheter-days in the baseline period to 1.48/1000 catheter-days in the novel care period (p = 0.036). The most common organisms involved in CRBSIs were coagulase-negative staphylococcus and Burkholderia cepacia (26% for both). DISCUSSION The novel care program reduced the incidence of CRBSIs in patients with temporary catheters inserted in their femoral veins.

Abstract
Xerostomia plays a major role in higher interdialytic weight gain (IDWG), which causes cardiovascular complications in patients who undergo hemodialysis. However, few studies have determined a method to manage xerostomia. This study determines the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on hemodialysis patients with xerostomia and the percentage of IDWG. The study was a single-blind and quasi-experimental study. There are 75 participants: 37 in the TEAS group and 38 in the contrast group. The TEAS group used 250 µs and 50 Hz and the contrast group used 50 µs and 2 Hz three times a week for 3 weeks to stimulate ST 6 and TE17 acupoints. The salivary flow rates, dry mouth, and %IDWG were determined before, during and one week after the program. Compared with the contrast group, the TEAS group showed a significantly improved salivary flow rate (mL/min) (F (2, 123) = 15.28, p < 0.0001), and patients recovered their normal salivary flow rate. However, the results show that both groups showed significant improvement in dry mouth after treatment. The TEAS group demonstrated no effect in terms of %IDWG, as expected. The results show that a TEAS program is an effective means of symptom management for xerostomia patients who undergo hemodialysis. A TEAS program can be used to manage symptoms for xerostomia patients who undergo hemodialysis.

Abstract
Podocyte migration results in proteinuria and glomerulonephropathy. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) can mediate podocyte migration; however, the crosstalk between them is unclear. ThisGraphical Abstract study determined the relationships between these factors. ER stress biomarkers (GRP78, p-eIF2α or CHOP), intracellular ROS generation, integrin-β3 and cell adhesion and migration were studied in a treatment of experiment using TGF-β1 with and without the ER stress inhibitors: 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA, a chemical chaperone), salubrinal (an eIF2α dephosphorylation inhibitor) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC, an antioxidant). ER stress biomarkers (p-eIF2α/eIF2α and GRP78), ROS generation and intergrin-β3 expression increased after TGF-β1 treatment. NAC down-regulated the expression of GRP78 after TGF-β1 treatment. 4-PBA attenuated TGF-β1-induced p-eIF2α/eIF2α, CHOP, ROS generation and intergrin-β3 expression. However, salubrinal did not inhibit TGF-β1-induced p-eIF2α/eIF2α, CHOP, ROS generation or integrin-β3 expression. NAC abrogated TGF-β1-induced integrin-β3 expression. At 24 h after treatment with TGF-β1, podocyte adhesion and migration increased. Furthermore, NAC, 4-PBA and an anti-interin-β3 antibody attenuated TGF-β1-induced podocyte adhesion and migration. This study demonstrated that TGF-β1-induced ER stress potentiates the generation of intracellular ROS to a high degree through the PERK/eIF2α/CHOP pathway. This intracellular ROS then mediates integrin-β3 expression, which regulates podocyte migration.

Abstract
Objective.Non-invasive brain stimulation has been promoted to facilitate neuromodulation in treating neurological diseases. Recently, high-definition (HD) transcranial electrical stimulation and a novel electrical waveform combining a direct current (DC) and theta burst stimulation (TBS)-like protocol were proposed and demonstrated high potential to enhance neuroplastic effects in a more-efficient manner. In this study, we designed a novel HD transcranial burst electrostimulation device and to preliminarily examined its therapeutic potential in neurorehabilitation.Approach.A prototype of the transcranial burst electrostimulation device was developed, which can flexibly output a waveform that combined a DC and TBS-like protocol and can equally distribute the current into 4 × 1 HD electrical stimulation by automatic impedance adjustments. The safety and accuracy of the device were then validated in a series ofin vitroexperiments. Finally, a pilot clinical trial was conducted to assess its clinical safety and therapeutic potential on upper-extremity rehabilitation in six patients with chronic stroke, where patients received either active or sham HD transcranial burst electrostimulation combined with occupational therapy three times per week for four weeks.Main results.The prototype was tested, and it was found to comply with all safety requirements. The output parameters were accurate and met the clinical study needs. The pilot clinical study demonstrated that the active HD transcranial burst electrostimulation group had greater improvement in voluntary motor function and coordination of the upper extremity than the sham control group. Additionally, no severe adverse events were noted, but slight skin redness under the stimulus electrode immediately after stimulation was seen.Conclusions.The results demonstrated the feasibility of incorporating the HD electrical DC and TBS-like protocol in our device; and the novel neuromodulatory device produced positive neurorehabilitation outcomes in a safe fashion, which could be the basis for the future clinical implementation for treating neurological diseases.Trial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04278105. Abstract
Predicting and overcoming radioresistance are crucial in radiation oncology, including in managing oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). First, we used RNA-sequence to compare expression profiles of parent OML1 and radioresistant OML1-R OSCC cells in order to select candidate genes responsible for radiation sensitivity. We identified IRAK2, a key immune mediator of the IL-1R/TLR signaling, as a potential target in investigating radiosensitivity. In four OSCC cell lines, we observed that intrinsically low IRAK2 expression demonstrated a radioresistant phenotype (i.e., OML1-R and SCC4), and vice versa (i.e., OML1 and SCC25). Next, we overexpressed IRAK2 in low IRAK2-expression OSCC cells and knocked it down in high IRAK2-expression cells to examine changes of irradiation response. After ionizing radiation (IR) exposure, IRAK2 overexpression enhanced the radiosensitivity of radioresistant cells and synergistically suppressed OSCC cell growth both in vitro and in vivo, and vice versa. We found that IRAK2 overexpression restored and enhanced radiosensitivity by enhancing IR-induced cell killing via caspase-8/3-dependent apoptosis. OSCC patients with high IRAK2 expression had better post-irradiation local control than those with low expression (i.e., 87.4% vs. 60.0% at five years, P = 0.055), showing that IRAK2 expression was associated with post-radiation recurrence. Multivariate analysis confirmed high IRAK2 expression as an independent predictor for local control (HR, 0.11; 95% CI, 0.016 – 0.760; P = 0.025). In conclusion, IRAK2 enhances radiosensitivity, via modulating caspase 8/3-medicated apoptosis, potentially playing double roles as a predictive biomarker and a novel therapeutic target in OSCC.

Abstract
Nav1.7 is an extensively investigated target for pain with a strong genetic link in humans, yet in spite of this effort, it remains challenging to identify efficacious, selective, and safe inhibitors. Here, we disclose the discovery and preclinical profile of GDC-0276 (1) and GDC-0310 (2), selective Nav1.7 inhibitors that have completed Phase 1 trials. Our initial search focused on close-in analogues to early compound 3. This resulted in the discovery of GDC-0276 (1), which possessed improved metabolic stability and an acceptable overall pharmacokinetics profile. To further derisk the predicted human pharmacokinetics and enable QD dosing, additional optimization of the scaffold was conducted, resulting in the discovery of a novel series of N-benzyl piperidine Nav1.7 inhibitors. Improvement of the metabolic stability by blocking the labile benzylic position led to the discovery of GDC-0310 (2), which possesses improved Nav selectivity and pharmacokinetic profile over 1.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The ankle-brachial index is a noninvasive modality to evaluate atherosclerosis and is a predictive role for future cardiovascular events and mortality. However, few studies have evaluated its relation to long-term future ischemic stroke in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, we examined the relationship between ankle-brachial index and ischemic stroke events among hemodialysis patients in a seven-year follow-up. METHODS A total of 84 patients were enrolled. Ankle-brachial index was assessed in January 2009. Primary outcomes included ischemic stroke. An ankle-brachial index < 0.9 was considered abnormal and 1.4 ≥ ankle-brachial index ≥ 0.9 to be normal ankle-brachial index. RESULTS Mean values for ankle-brachial index were 0.98 ± 0.21at study entrance. In addition, 28 patients encountered ischemic stroke in the seven-year follow-up. In univariate Cox regression analysis, old age (hazard ratio (HR): 1.065, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.030-1.102, p < 0.001), low seven-year averaged serum phosphate levels (HR: 0.473, 95% CI: 0.306-0.730, p = 0.001), and abnormal ankle-brachial index (HR: 0.035, 95% CI: 0.009-0.145, p < 0.001) were risk factors for ischemic stroke. In multivariate Cox regression analysis for significant variables in univariate analysis, abnormal ankle-brachial index (HR: 0.058, 95% CI: 0.012-0.279, p < 0.001) and low seven-year averaged serum phosphate levels (HR: 0.625, 95% CI: 0.404-0.968, p = 0.035) remained the risk factors for ischemic stroke. The risk of ischemic stroke was 3.783-fold in patients with abnormal ankle-brachial index compared with patients with normal ankle-brachial index (HR: 3.783, 95% CI: 1.731-8.269, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that ankle-brachial index is an impressive predictor of future ischemic stroke among hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
As scientific and technical knowledge advances, research on biomedical micro-electromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) is also developing towards lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. A digital microfluidic (DMF) system specialized for an electrowetting- on-dielectric (EWOD) mechanism is a promising technique for such point-of-care systems. EWOD microfluidic biochemical analytical systems provide applications over a broad range in the lab-on-a-chip field. In this report, we treated extraction of cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) at a small concentration from a mouse embryo culture medium (2.5 days & 3.5 days) with electro-wetting on a dielectric (EWOD) platform using bio-reagents of micro-scale quantity. For such extraction, we modified a conventional method of genomic-DNA (g-DNA) extraction using magnetic beads (MB). To prove that extraction of cf-DNA with EWOD was accomplished, as trials we extracted designed-DNA (obtained from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH), Taiwan which shows properties similar to that of cf-DNA). Using that designed DNA, extraction with both conventional and EWOD methods has been performed; the mean percentage of extraction with both methods was calculated for a comparison. From the cycle threshold (Ct) results with a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR), the mean extraction percentages were obtained as 14.8 percent according to the conventional method and 23 percent with EWOD. These results show that DNA extraction with EWOD appears promising. The EWOD extraction involved voltage 100 V and frequency 2 kHz. From this analysis, we generated a protocol for an improved extraction percentage on a EWOD chip and performed cf-DNA extraction from an embryo-culture medium (KSOM medium) at 3.5 and 2.5 days. The mean weight obtained for EWOD-extracted cf-DNA is 0.33 fg from the 3.5-day sample and 31.95 fg from the 2.5-day sample. All these results will pave a new path towards a renowned lab-on-a-chip concept.

Abstract
AIMS Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is found to increase in proliferative glomerulonephritis. MIF binds to the MIF receptor (CD74) that activates MAP kinase (ERK and p38). Integrins and cyclinD1 regulate cell proliferation, differentiation and adhesion. This study evaluates whether MIF can regulate integrin-β1/cyclin D1 expression and cell adhesion of podocytes. MAIN METHODS Expression of integrin-β1 mRNA/protein and cyclin D1 mRNA under stimulation of MIF was evaluated by real-time PCR and Western blotting. MIF receptor (CD74) and MAP kinase under MIF treatment were examined to determine which pathway regulated integrin-β1 and cyclin D1 expression. Cell adhesion was evaluated under MIF treatment and/or anti-integrin-β1 antibody by cell adhesion assay. KEY FINDINGS Protein levels of integrin-β1 were up-regulated under MIF treatment in a dosage-dependent manner. CD74 protein levels were not changed after MIF treatment. Integrin-β1 and cyclin D1 mRNA levels were up-regulated after MIF 100 ng/ml treatment. ERK inhibitor U0126 reduced MIF-induced the increase in integrin-β1 mRNA and protein expression following MIF stimulation. However, p38 inhibitor SB 203580 did not inhibit MIF-induced increase in integrin-β1 mRNA and protein expression following MIF stimulation. MIF-induced increase in cyclin D1 mRNA level also was inhibited only by U0126 following MIF stimulation. Podocyte adhesion was increased after MIF treatment, but, anti-integrin-β1 antibody decreased MIF-enhanced podocyte adhesion. SIGNIFICANCE MIF increases integrin-β1 and cyclin D1 expression through the ERK pathway in podocytes, and the up-regulated expression of integrin-β1 increases podocyte adhesion. These results provide further understanding for the role of MIF in developing proliferative glomerulonephritis.

Abstract
Oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains are widely used in donor-acceptor conjugated polymers (D-A CPs) and enable the polymers to dissolve and be processed in environmentally friendly and cost-effective nonchlorinated solvents, such as water. However, the OEG effect on the physical properties of D-A CPs has not been thoroughly studied and sometimes the results are controversial. In this study, two oligothiophene-isoindigo based conjugated polymers, P3TI and P4TI, are selected as model polymers to investigate the OEG effect. PnTI has octyl side chains on the oligothiophene unit and 2-hexyldecyl side chains on the isoindigo unit. The replacement of an alkyl side chain with OEG not only changes the optical and thermal properties but also the molecular arrangements of the polymers such as π-π d-spacing, crystallinity, and packing orientation. The domination of the crystallization behavior changes from the oligothiophene unit to the isoindigo unit when the bulky alkyl group is replaced by the flexible and linear OEG. The packing changes from edge-on to face-on orientation. The results are intriguing and provide new insights into this class of polymers.

Abstract
Accidental introduction through ballast water and biofouling are currently the main factors responsible for spreading non-indigenous species in the marine realm. In the Southwestern Atlantic, two scleractinian corals, Tubastraea coccinea and T. tagusensis, have been introduced by opportunistic colonization in 1980 and are now widespread along more than 3,500 km of coastline. To better understand the invasion process and the role of vectors in spreading these species, we sampled 306 and 173 colonies of T. coccinea and T. tagusensis from invaded sites, possible vectors and one native population. Analyses revealed a higher diversity of multi-locus genotypes (MLGs) on vectors, suggesting that they were contaminated prior to their arrival in the Southwestern Atlantic, and a high proportion of clones at invaded sites, with few genotypes spread over ~2,000 km. This broad distribution is most likely a result of secondary introductions through the transport of contaminated vectors. Results also suggest the occurrence of multiple invasions, mainly in the northernmost sites. In summary, clonality, secondary introductions, and multiple invasions are the main reasons for the broad spread and invasive success of Tubastraea spp. in the Southwestern Atlantic. Consequently, the correct control of vectors is the most effective approach for management and prevention of new invasions.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer prognosis remains poor in current clinical practice. We previously reported that moscatilin can induce apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe in esophageal cancer cells, accompanied by upregulation of polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) expression. We aimed to validate in vitro activity and Plk1 expression in vivo following moscatilin treatment and to examine the treatment's radiosensitizing effect. Human esophageal cancer cells were implanted in nude mice. Moscatilin was intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected into the mice. Tumor size, body weight, white blood cell counts, and liver and renal function were measured. Aberrant mitosis and Plk1 expression were assessed. Colony formation was used to measure survival fraction after radiation. Moscatilin significantly suppressed tumor growth in mice bearing human esophageal xenografts without affecting body weight, white blood cell counts, or liver and renal function. Moscatilin also induced aberrant mitosis and apoptosis. Plk1 expression was markedly upregulated in vivo. Moreover, moscatilin pretreatment enhanced CE81T/VGH and BE3 cell radioresponse in vitro. Moscatilin may inhibit growth of human esophageal tumors and sensitize esophageal cancer cells to radiation therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Activation of Ras oncogene in human tumors is associated with radiation-associated metastatic potential. Although ionizing radiation is one important method of cancer treatments, it has been shown to enhance matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity and facilitates a more aggressive cancer phenotype. Our previous studies showed that andrographolide with lower dose rates of radiation could inhibit RAS-transformed cancer metastasis in vivo; however, the molecular mechanisms are not yet clear. In this study, we aimed to explore the anti-metastatic effect of andrographolide combined with radiation on Ras-transformed cells. METHODS RAS-transformed cells were treated with andrographolide in the presence or absence of irradiation (2-4 Gy) or angiotensin II to examine cell invasion. In vivo tumorigenesis assays were also performed. The MMP-2 activity was detected by using Gelatin zymography. Signal transduction of NF-κB subunit, p65 and phosphor-ERK 1/2, were examined by using Western blotting analysis. RESULTS Treatment with andrographolide inhibited migration of Ras-transformed cells. Andrographolide treatment with radiation significantly inhibited cancer metastasis in vivo. We found that andrographolide exhibited anti-migration and anti-invasive ability against cancer metastasis via inhibition of MMP2 activity rather than affected MMP-9 and EMT. In addition, combined andrographolide with radiation appeared to be more effective in reducing MMP-2 expression, and this effect was accompanied by suppression of ERK activation that inhibits cancer cell migration and invasion. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that andrographolide enhances the anti-metastatic effect of radiation in Ras-transformed cells via suppression of ERK-mediated MMP-2 activity.

Abstract
The high power conversion efficiency of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells can be achieved from either low crystallinity (P3TI) or high crystallinity (P6TI) of isoindigo-based donor-acceptor alternating copolymers blended with PC71BM by controlling nanophase separation using additives. P3TI shows similar device performance regardless of the type of additives, while P6TI is significantly affected by whether the additive is aliphatic or aromatic. To understand the interplays of crystallinity of polymers and the type of additive on the formation of nanomorphology of BHJ, we employed the simultaneous grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS) technique to perform the quantitative investigation. By incorporating additives, the PC71BM molecules can be easily intercalated into the P3TI polymer-rich domain and the size of the PC71BM clusters is reduced from about 24 nm to about 5 nm by either aliphatic 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) or aromatic 1-chloronaphthalene (CN). On comparison, it is found to be more difficult for PC71BM molecules to be intercalated into the highly crystalline P6TI dense domain, and the PC71BM molecules have a higher tendency to be self-aggregated, which results in a larger size of PC71BM clusters of about 58 nm. The clusters can be reduced to about 7 nm by DIO and 13 nm by CN. The presence of crystallites in the P6TI domain can interact with the additive to tailor the crystallization of PC71BM clusters to a size similar to that of P6TI crystallites (∼12 nm) and form a connected network for efficient charge transportation. Thus, the power conversion efficiency of P6TI:PC71BM reaches its maximum of 7.04% using aromatic CN additives. This is a new finding of the effect of crystallinity, which is not observed in the common low crystalline donor-acceptor alternating copolymers such as PTB7. Our results provide a useful guideline to manipulate the desired morphology of BHJ films constructed from alternating copolymer with different crystallinity, which is critical for achieving high power conversion efficiency of solar cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arterial stiffness is a determinant of cardiovascular disease in end stage renal disease. Hemodialysis patients may develop anti-platelet factor 4/heparin antibody (PF4-H Ab) because of heparin treatment in dialysis. We tested whether PF4-H Ab was associated with progression of arterial stiffness in a 3-year follow-up. METHODS We enrolled 74 hemodialysis patients and studied their clinical, biochemical and arterial stiffness measurement with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) over 3 years. Baseline and changes in baPWV after 3 years (ΔbaPWV) were collected and compared with related clinical and biochemical parameters. PF4-H Ab was evaluated by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and titer ≥ 0.4 was defined to have PF4-H Ab. RESULTS We found a positive PF4-H Ab status in 25 of 74 patients. Mean baPWV was 16.1 ± 3.8 (m/s) at baseline and 17.6 ± 4.0 (m/s) after 3 years. Mean ΔbaPWV was 3.4 ± 2.2 (m/s) in the PF4-H Ab positive group, and 0.6 ± 1.2 (m/s) in the PF4-H Ab negative group. Baseline baPWV was only significantly associated with age (β = 0.49, p < 0.01). ΔbaPWV was significantly different between the PF4-H Ab positive and negative groups (p < 0.01). In multivariate regression analysis, only PF4-H Ab was positively associated with ΔbaPWV (β = 0.71, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our study concluded that PF4-H Ab was associated with progression of arterial stiffness in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
Molecular imaging of reporter gene expression in cancer cells can provide rapid, sensitive and non-invasive monitoring of tumor behavior. The aim of the present study was to establish a non-invasive method to measure tumor size and distribution in vivo. Briefly, H-Ras-transformed cells were stably transfected with a plasmid containing the luciferase gene (Luc), designated as Ras/Luc. Ras/Luc cells were injected into the back or tail vein of nude BALB/cAnN-Foxn1nu/CrlNarl mice (age, 6-8 weeks). Mice were subsequently administered D-luciferin via intra-peritoneal injection, prior to image acquisition. Photons emitted from the mice were detected via an imaging system. Tumor size and distribution in vivo were quantified as photons/second. Andrographolide has demonstrated radiosensitization in previous in vitro and in vivo studies. In the present study, the potential effects of andrographolide cancer metastasis were investigated further, using an imaging system. Preliminary results of andrographolide combined with radiation indicated the inhibition of cancer metastasis. The present mechanistic study of andrographolide-mediated effects demonstrated that activated extracellular signal regulated kinase protein and H2O2 production levels were significantly increased by andrographolide. In summary, the present study established a non-invasive method to measure tumor size and distribution in vivo and indicated that andrographolide may be a potential therapeutic strategy in cancer therapy.

Abstract
As the number of long-term cervical cancer survivors continues to increase because of improvements in treatment, concerns about second primary malignancy have grown. The high-risk area of second primary cancers in cervical cancer survivors is the pelvis. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) could be a useful marker for gynecological cancers. Thus, we designed a large-scale, nationwide, controlled cohort study to investigate whether PID or other risk factors increased the risk of second primary cancers in patients with cervical cancer treated by surgery alone.Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 24,444 cervical cancer patients were identified using the Registry Data for Catastrophic Illness and the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. Patients who received definite surgery were selected. To exclude the effect on second primary malignancy by treatment modalities, all cervical patients who ever having received adjuvant or definite radiotherapy or chemotherapy for primary cervical cancer were excluded. Finally, 3860 cervical cancer patients treated by surgery alone without adjuvant treatments were analyzed.Cox proportional hazards model was used for multivariate analysis and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess the cumulative risks. Regarding the incidence of second primary cancers, the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was used.The median follow-up time was 56.6 months. The 6-year cumulative risk of second primary cancers is 0.16% and 0.12% for PID and without PID, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, age of less than 50 years, the presence of diabetes mellitus, and PID were significantly positivity associated with the risk of second primary cancers. The hazard ratios (HRs) of age less than 50 years, diabetes mellitus, and PID were 1.38 (95% CI = 1.11-2.04), 1.40 (95% CI = 1.06-1.85), and 1.35 (95% CI = 1.00-1.81), respectively. A higher incidence of second primary cancers was observed in the genitals, bladder, and colon.In conclusion, the incidence of second primary cancers was higher in the genitals, bladder, and colon in patients with cervical cancer treated with surgery alone. The patients with PID had a higher risk of second primary cancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The clinical feasibility of passive immunotherapy has not been demonstrated in dogs naturally infected with canine distemper. In this study, porcine anti-canine distemper virus IgG and F(ab')2 antibody fragments were used to treat infected puppies. METHODS A total of 41 naturally infected puppies (age Äsix months) exhibiting severe respiratory signs, but lacking neurological signs, were enrolled in the study. Twenty-five puppies were treated with a combination of IgG or F(ab')2 antibody fragments (Group 1) and supportive therapy and 16 puppies received routine supportive care only (Group 2). RESULTS The survival rate of dogs in Group 1 (19/25; 76%) was significantly higher than that in Group 2 (5/16; 31·3%) (P<0·05). During the therapy, 8 of the 25 dogs (32%) in Group 1 developed neurological signs versus 12 of the 16 dogs (75%) in Group 2 (P<0·05). Adverse reactions were limited to elevated body temperature in dogs that received IgG antibodies. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Porcine anti-canine distemper virus antibodies improved survival in puppies affected with canine distemper with minimal adverse effects. Therefore, this therapy could be considered for treatment of endangered animal species infected with canine distemper virus.

Abstract
Abstract
Purpose:
Optimal breast positioning is a key component to high quality screening mammograms to allow the radiologist to make the best interpretation for the patient and referring physician. In addition, the success of newer imaging techniques also depends on breast positioning. The American College of Radiology (ACR) sets the standard of what images should include by outlining 13 criteria of breast positioning. An initial audit of over 100 mammograms at our institution in 2013 found that only a mean of 33% were achieving the ACR criteria. The goal of our project was to increase the percentage of screening mammograms achieving ACR criteria to 90% by June 2015.
Methods:
Our breast imaging center partnered with a quality improvement (QI) team driving a radiology department-wide program on quality improvement. Team members identified 5 key causes that barred achieving the ACR criteria: disagreement on what meets criteria, not having a standard work for acquiring and reading mammograms, lack of communication between the technologist and radiologist, not having a measurement system to track performance, and lack of coaching on technologist techniques for acquiring images. Developments to address these causes included: teaching modules on what meets ACR criteria, standard work for radiologists to recall mammograms that did not meet ACR criteria, system for the technologist to document why criteria were missed, auditing system to track performance, and feedback sessions between technologists and radiologists. Over 1,700 mammograms were audited from the time period of July 2014 to March 2015.
Results:
By October 2014, the percentage of mammograms achieving all 13 of the ACR criteria was 71%, with 4 criteria that prevented reaching the 90% goal. By March 2015, 10 of the 13 ACR criteria were being sustainably met by the target goal of 90% of mammograms, better in all criteria compared to our 2013 data, and better in all but one criterion compared to published 1993 data. Table 1 demonstrates that we have been able to sustain a composite percentage of 12 of the 13 ACR criteria greater than 90% for the last 2 consecutive months.

Conclusion:
Few institutions have published positioning data, with the most recent QI publication on breast positioning dating to 1993. We have conducted a structured process to improve quality of mammographic positioning, including revision of processes that led to poor positioning outcomes and creation of an environment to sustain our improved outcomes. Three ACR criteria continue to be problematic in reaching the 90% goal, with future investigation into whether it is actually feasible to achieve the most difficult criterion at our goal of 90%. Future work also includes assessing how the recent hire of a mammography coach to spread best practices and real-time feedback is able to further improve results and maintain the infrastructure of ongoing QI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Computer-aided drug design has a long history of being applied to discover new molecules to treat various cancers, but it has always been focused on single targets. The development of systems biology has let scientists reveal more hidden mechanisms of cancers, but attempts to apply systems biology to cancer therapies remain at preliminary stages. Our lab has successfully developed various systems biology models for several cancers. Based on these achievements, we present the first attempt to combine multiple-target therapy with systems biology. METHODS In our previous study, we identified 28 significant proteins--i.e., common core network markers--of four types of cancers as house-keeping proteins of these cancers. In this study, we ranked these proteins by summing their carcinogenesis relevance values (CRVs) across the four cancers, and then performed docking and pharmacophore modeling to do virtual screening on the NCI database for anti-cancer drugs. We also performed pathway analysis on these proteins using Panther and MetaCore to reveal more mechanisms of these cancer house-keeping proteins. RESULTS We designed several approaches to discover targets for multiple-target cocktail therapies. In the first one, we identified the top 20 drugs for each of the 28 cancer house-keeping proteins, and analyzed the docking pose to further understand the interaction mechanisms of these drugs. After screening for duplicates, we found that 13 of these drugs could target 11 proteins simultaneously. In the second approach, we chose the top 5 proteins with the highest summed CRVs and used them as the drug targets. We built a pharmacophore and applied it to do virtual screening against the Life-Chemical library for anti-cancer drugs. Based on these results, wet-lab bio-scientists could freely investigate combinations of these drugs for multiple-target therapy for cancers, in contrast to the traditional single target therapy. CONCLUSIONS Combination of systems biology with computer-aided drug design could help us develop novel drug cocktails with multiple targets. We believe this will enhance the efficiency of therapeutic practice and lead to new directions for cancer therapy.

Abstract
Organisms of the genus Acanthamoeba are environmentally ubiquitous and colonizers of the oral mucosa in humans. While largely asymptomatic in healthy persons, Acanthamoeba infection can cause disseminated disease with poor prognosis in immunosuppressed populations. Here we report a unique case of cutaneous amoebiasis associated with continuous positive airway pressure use in an immunosuppressed patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron may contribute to vascular injury through reactive oxygen species. Hemodialysis patients frequently receive iron supply for correction of anemia and are at a high risk of cardiovascular disease. We tested the relationship between iron status and change in arterial stiffness in hemodialysis patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS We measured iron status in 53 hemodialysis patients and studied the association with clinical, biochemical, and arterial stiffness measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) over 3 years. The blood pressure was controlled to below 140/90 mmHg by anti-hypertensive drugs. RESULTS Median and interquartile range of baseline baPWV, baPWV at 3 years, and ΔbaPWV (difference between 3-year baPWV and baseline baPWV) were following: 17.6 (14.8-18.9), 16.9 (15.3-19.9), and 0.2 (-1.2 to 2.7) m/s. At baseline, baPWV was positively correlated with age, serum ferritin, and systolic blood pressure in univariate analysis. However, in multivariate analysis, only age and serum ferritin remained the significant determinants of baseline baPWV. After 3 years, ΔbaPWV was negatively correlated with age and positively with 3-year averaged serum ferritin in univariate analysis. Then, in multivariate analysis, only 3-year averaged serum ferritin was the important determinant of ΔbaPWV. ΔbaPWV was significantly increased in patients with 3-year averaged serum ferritin >500 ng/mL compared to patients with 3-year averaged serum ferritin ≤500 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS In hemodialysis patients, serum ferritin associates with the progressive arterial stiffness, especially when serum ferritin >500 ng/mL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heparin therapy may induce anti-platelet factor 4/heparin antibody (PF4-H Ab). Hemodialysis patients receive scheduled heparin and are at a risk of developing PF4-H Ab. Hemodialysis patients are also at a high risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This study examines whether chronic PF4-H Ab exposure contributes to the progression of PAD measured by ankle brachial index (ABI) in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 71 hemodialysis patients were enrolled, and the association between clinical, biochemical parameters and ABI after 3 years was studied. PF4-H Ab was evaluated by ELISA, and patients with titer ≥ 0.4 were taken as having PF4-H Ab. RESULTS Mean ABI was 1.04 ± 0.18 at baseline and 1.01 ± 0.17 after 3 years. Mean ΔABI (change in ABI after 3 years) was -0.04 ± 0.13. PF4-H Ab was positive in 26 patients. PF4-H Ab was not related to hemodialysis duration, DM history, smoking and age. Platelet count showed no correlation with PF4-H Ab. However, there was significance in ΔABI between PF4-H Ab-positive and PF4-H Ab-negative patients (p = 0.002). ΔABI was negatively correlated with PF4-H Ab and 3-year averaged serum Ca × P only (β = -0.378, p = 0.001; β = -0.263, p = 0.018, respectively). However, in PF4-H Ab-positive patients, the extent of ΔABI did not correlate with PF4-H Ab titers (r = -0.021, p = 0.921). CONCLUSIONS PF4-H Ab positivity, along with high levels of serum Ca × P, played a potential role in the progression of PAD over time.

Abstract
Solution processable planar heterojunction perovskite solar cell is a very promising new technology for low cost renewable energy. One of the most common cell structures is FTO/TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3-xClx/spiro-OMeTAD/Au. The main issues of this type of solar cell are the poor coverage and morphology control of the perovskite CH3NH3PbI3-xClx film on TiO2. For the first time, we demonstrate that the problems can be easily resolved by using a polymer additive in perovskite precursor solution during the film formation process. A 25% increase in power conversion efficiency at a value of 13.2% is achieved by adding 1 wt % of poly(ethylene glycol) in the perovskite layer using a 150 °C processed TiO2 nanoparticle layer. The morphology of this new perovskite was carefully studied by SEM, XRD, and AFM. The results reveal that the additive controls the size and aggregation of perovskite crystals and helps the formation of smooth film over TiO2 completely. Thus, the Voc and Jsc are greatly increased for a high efficiency solar cell. The amount of additive is optimized at 1 wt % due to its insulating characteristics. This research provides a facile way to fabricate a high efficiency perovskite solar cell by the low temperature solution process (<150 °C), which has the advancement of conserving energy over the traditional high temperature sintering TiO2 compact layer device.

Abstract
Proteinuria is a major hallmark of glomerular nephropathy and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays an important role in glomerular nephropathy. The protein levels of integrin-β1 in podocytes are found to be negative correlation with amount of proteinuria. This study investigated whether urinary protein, particularly albumin, induced ER stress that consequently reduced integrin-β1 expression. All experiments were performed using primary cultured rat podocyte. Protein and mRNA expression were measured by western blotting and semiquantified reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Albumin uptake was found at 1 h after albumin addition. Albumin reduced precursor and mature forms of integrin-β1, but did not change mRNA levels of integrin-β1. Albumin induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and ER stress. Antioxidant (N-acetylcysteine) suppressed albumin-induced ER stress and decrements in precursor and mature forms of integrin-β1. Then, ER stress inhibitors (4-phenylbutyrate and salubrinal) also inhibited albumin-induced decrements in precursor and mature forms of integrin-β1. The potent ER stress inducers (thapsigargin and tunicamycin) directly decreased precursor and mature forms of integrin-β1 and led appearance of unglycosylated core protein of integrin-β1. Our results show that in proteinuric disease, albumin decreases precursor and mature forms of integrin-β1 through ROS-ER stress pathway in podocytes.

Abstract
Endoplasmic reticulum stress occurs in a variety of patho-physiological mechanisms and there has been great interest in managing this pathway for the treatment of clinical diseases. Autophagy is closely interconnected with endoplasmic reticulum stress to counteract the possible injurious effects related with the impairment of protein folding. Studies have shown that glomerular podocytes exhibit high rate of autophagy to maintain as terminally differentiated cells. In this study, podocytes were exposed to tunicamycin and thapsigargin to induce endoplasmic reticulum stress. Thapsigargin/tunicamycin treatment induced a significant increase in endoplasmic reticulum stress and of cell death, represented by higher GADD153 and GRP78 expression and propidium iodide flow cytometry, respectively. However, thapsigargin/tunicamycin stimulation also enhanced autophagy development, demonstrated by monodansylcadaverine assay and LC3 conversion. To evaluate the regulatory effects of autophagy on endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced cell death, rapamycin (Rap) or 3-methyladenine (3-MA) was added to enhance or inhibit autophagosome formation. Endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced cell death was decreased at 6 h, but was not reduced at 24 h after Rap+TG or Rap+TM treatment. In contrast, endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced cell death increased at 6 and 24 h after 3-MA+TG or 3-MA+TM treatment. Our study demonstrated that thapsigargin/tunicamycin treatment induced endoplasmic reticulum stress which resulted in podocytes death. Autophagy, which counteracted the induced endoplasmic reticulum stress, was simultaneously enhanced. The salvational role of autophagy was supported by adding Rap/3-MA to mechanistically regulate the expression of autophagy and autophagosome formation. In summary, autophagy helps the podocytes from cell death and may contribute to sustain the longevity as a highly differentiated cell lineage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Non-invasive prenatal testing for fetal trisomy 21 (T21) by massively parallel shotgun sequencing (MPSS) is available for clinical use but its efficacy is limited by several factors, e.g. the proportion of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and sequencing depth. Existing algorithms discard DNA reads from the chromosomes for which testing is not being performed (i.e. those other than chromosome 21) and are thus more susceptible to diluted fetal DNA and limited sequencing depth. We aimed to describe and evaluate a novel algorithm for aneuploidy detection (genome-wide normalized score (GWNS)), which normalizes read counts by the proportions of DNA fragments from chromosome 21 in normal controls. METHODS We assessed the GWNS approach by comparison with two existing algorithms, i.e. Z-score and normalized chromosome value (NCV), using theoretical approximations and computer simulations in a set of 86 cases (64 euploid and 22 T21 cases). We then validated GWNS by studying an expanded set of clinical samples (n = 208). Finally, dilution experiments were undertaken to compare performance of the three algorithms (Z-score, NCV, GWNS) when fetal DNA concentration was low. RESULTS At fixed levels of significance and power, GWNS required a smaller fetal DNA proportion and fewer total MPSS reads compared to Z-score or NCV. In dilution experiments, GWNS also outperformed the other two methods by reaching the correct diagnosis with the lowest range of fetal DNA concentrations (GWNS, 3.83-4.75%; Z-score, 4.75-5.22%; NCV, 6.47-8.58%). CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that GWNS is comparable to Z-score and NCV methods regarding the performance of detecting fetal T21. Dilution experiments suggest that GWNS may perform better than the other methods when fetal fraction is low.

Abstract
Moscatilin, a bibenzyl derivative from the orchid Dendrobium loddigesii, has been shown to possess anticancer activity. We examined the effect of moscatilin on human esophageal cancer cells, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC) cells and its possible mechanisms. Moscatilin suppressed the growth of both the histological cell lines in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Morphological changes indicative of apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe were observed following moscatilin treatment. The population of cells in the sub-G1 phase and polyploidy phase significantly increased after treatment. Immunofluorescence revealed multipolar mitosis and subsequent multinucleation in moscatilin-treated cells, indicating the development of mitotic catastrophe. Western blot showed a marked increase in expressions of polo-like kinase 1 and cyclin B1 after exposure to moscatilin. In conclusion, moscatilin inhibits growth and induces apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe in human esophageal SCC- and ADC-derived cell lines, indicating that moscatilin has broad potential against esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Cyclin D1 plays significant roles in cell cycle entry and migration. We have documented that both integrin α3β1 expressions and the number of podocytes were reduced in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. We wondered whether integrin-extracellular matrix (ECM) interaction was involved in the regulation of cyclin D1 expression, and the possible signaling pathways in mitogen-stimulating podocytes. Cultured podocytes were divided into serum (mitogens/growth factors)-starved and serum-stimulated groups. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect cyclin D1 mRNA, and Western blot analysis was used to measure protein concentrations of cyclin D1 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation (p-ERK/ERK). The integrin-ECM interaction was blocked by anti-β1-integrin monoclonal antibody or RGDS (Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser). The MEK inhibitor, U0126, was used to inhibit ERK activation. The results showed that there was little cyclin D1 protein in serum-starved groups, but it was abundant in serum-stimulated groups. Both cyclin D1 mRNA and protein levels were reduced in serum-stimulated podocytes after blocking integrin-ECM interaction. ERK activation in serum-stimulated podocytes was significantly decreased after blocking integrin-ECM interaction. Cyclin D1 mRNA and protein concentrations in serum-stimulated podocytes were reduced after blocking ERK activation by U0126. We demonstrate that integrin-ECM interaction collaborates with mitogens to activate ERK/mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways which are essential for cyclin D1 expression in podocytes.

Abstract
The effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blocking integrin-extracellular matrix (ECM) interaction on apoptosis in podocytes, and the related signal transduction pathways remain unclear. Primary cultured rat podocytes were exposed to ROS. Integrin-ECM interaction was inhibited with anti-β1-integrin monoclonal antibody (mAb) or RGDS (Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser). Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation was evaluated with Western blotting. U0126 was used to inhibit ERK activation. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-peroxidase nick end-labeling of DNA (TUNEL) was used to evaluate apoptosis. We found that ROS-treated podocytes exhibited increased apoptosis, and both anti-β1-integrin mAb and RGDS induce apoptosis. Addition of ROS to either anti-β1-integrin mAb or RGDS enhanced apoptosis in both conditions. ERK activation was increased by either ROS or blocking integrin-ECM interaction. Preincubation with U0126 decreased apoptosis induced by ROS, anti-β1-integrin mAb or RGDS, respectively. Our study demonstrated that ROS and blocking integrin-ECM interaction induce podocyte apoptosis, which is mediated by ERK activation.

Abstract
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a leading cause of death in the United States affecting approximately 670,000 individuals. Due to the prevalence of CHF related issues, it is prudent to seek out methodologies that would facilitate the prevention, monitoring, and treatment of heart disease on a daily basis. This paper describes WANDA (Weight and Activity with Blood Pressure Monitoring System); a study that leverages sensor technologies and wireless communications to monitor the health related measurements of patients with CHF. The WANDA system is a three-tier architecture consisting of sensors, web servers, and back-end databases. The system was developed in conjunction with the UCLA School of Nursing and the UCLA Wireless Health Institute to enable early detection of key clinical symptoms indicative of CHF-related decompensation. This study shows that CHF patients monitored by WANDA are less likely to have readings fall outside a healthy range. In addition, WANDA provides a useful feedback system for regulating readings of CHF patients.

Abstract
Conducting polymer (polyaniline) sheets are shown to be active substrates to promote the growth of nanostructured silver thin films with highly tunable morphologies. Using the spontaneous electroless deposition of silver, we show that a range of nanostructured metallic features can be controllably and reproducibly formed over large surface areas. The structural morphology of the resulting metal-polymer nanocomposite is demonstrated to be sensitive to experimental parameters such as ion concentration, temperature, and polymer processing and can range from densely packed oblate nanosheets to bulk crystalline metals. The deposition mechanisms are explained using a diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model to describe the semi-fractal-like growth of the metal nanostructures. We find these composite films to exhibit strong surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) activity, and the nanostructured features are optimized with respect to SERS activity using a self-assembled monolayer of mercapto-benzoic acid as a model Raman reporter. SERS enhancements are estimated to be on the order of 10(7). Through micro-Raman SERS mapping, these materials are shown to exhibit uniform SERS responses over macroscopic areas. These metal-polymer nanocomposites benefit from the underlying polymer's processability to yield SERS-active materials of almost limitless shape and size and show significant promise for future SERS-based sensing and detection schemes.
