Abstract
Objectives Ilex paraguariensis (Aquifoleaceae) is cultivated to produce "yerba mate". Due to its nutritional, energizing, hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects, it is used in the elaboration of food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The oxidative stress related to protein glycation and production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) leads to the development of several diseases. The objective of this work was to compare the antioxidant and anti-AGEs activity of a decoction of fruits (F) and leaves (L). Methods The antioxidant activity was assayed by the DPPH assay and the inhibition of egg yolk lipid peroxidation (ILP), and anti-AGEs activity, through the inhibition of the formation of fructosamine (IF), β-amyloid (Iβ), protein carbonylation (IC) and AGEs (IA). Polyphenols were quantified by HPLC. Results Maximum response ± SEM For F 0.01 µg/mL IF = 42 ± 4%, IC = 17 ± 2% and for 10 µg/mL IA = 38 ± 4%, Iβ = 67 ± 7%. For L 0.1 µg/mL IF = 35 ± 2%, IC = 19 ± 2% and for 100 µg/mL IA = 26 ± 3%, Iβ = 63.04 ± 2%. The DPPH IC50 = 134.8 ± 14 µg/mL for F and 34.67 ± 3 µg/mL for L. The ILP IC50 = 512.86 ± 50 µg/mL for F and 154.8 ± 15 µg/mL for L. By HPLC L presented the highest amounts of flavonoids and caffeoylquinic acids. F and L showed strong anti-AGEs activity, affecting the early stages of glycation at low concentrations and the late stages of glycation at high concentrations. The highest activity for both F and L was seen in the IF and Iβ. F presented the highest anti-AGEs potency. L presented the highest antioxidant potency, which was related to the highest content of polyphenols. Conclusion The fruits of I. paraguariensis could be a source of antioxidant and anti-AGEs compounds to be used with medicinal purposes or as functional food.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori, invades the gastric mucosa and is one of the causative agents of stomach cancer and peptic ulcers. Origanum vulgare, is a flavouring herb used worldwide. But little is known about the effects of extracts prepared by maceration in cold PBS. This study was aimed at determining the superoxide dismutase (SOD)- and peroxidase (Px)-like antioxidant activities as well as the immunomodulatory activity (anti-inflammatory/pro-inflammatory) of an aqueous extract of O. vulgare by evaluating the production of nitric oxide (NO) in macrophages stimulated with H. pylori derivatives. The cold extract presented SOD-like and Px-like activities with effective concentration 50 (EC50) values of Px = 489.7 ± 48 µg/ml and SOD= 384.7 ± 30 µg/ml. The extract was also capable of modulating the production of NO in macrophages stimulated by H. pylori derivatives by exerting a pro-inflammatory activity at high concentrations and an anti-inflammatory activity at low concentrations.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Larrea divaricata Cav. (Zygophyllaceae) (jarilla) is a native plant of South America widely distributed across Argentina and used in popular medicine to treat diabetes and hypercholesterolemia by the Diaguita-Calchaquí, Amaichas, and Quilmes indigenous communities and by non-indigenous population (criollos) of Calamuchita, in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. L. divaricata has also proved to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, the antidiabetic effects and the nutritional properties of the aqueous extract (AE) of this plant remain to be scientifically determined. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of the present work was to evaluate the capacity of an aqueous extract of L. divaricata (AE) and its main compound nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) to modulate the glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and oxidative stress levels in STZ-induced diabetes in mice. The general objective of the present work was to search for extracts that can be used as adjuvant therapy in for diabetes. The suitability of the extract to be used as a dietary supplement was also assessed by determining the proximate amount of fibre, lipids, proteins, and minerals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Diabetes was induced in mice by administration of streptozotocin (STZ). AE and NDGA were administered by the oral route. The animals' glycaemia was periodically monitored in blood samples obtained from the tail vein. The glucose dehydrogenase method was used. The effect of the AE on cholesterol, triglycerides, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were determined in plasma samples by spectrophotometric assays. RESULTS In STZ-treated mice, AE significantly decreased glucose (33%, ****p < 0.0001) and cholesterol levels (32%, **p < 0.01). AE and NDGA decreased lipid peroxidation (30% and 38%, respectively, ****p < 0.0001), and increased GSH levels (20%, **p < 0.01). The effects of AE on glucose and lipid levels could not be ascribed to NDGA; however, this compound was involved in the extract antioxidant effects. The overall effects of AE were probably related to its antioxidant activity and to the anti-hyperglycaemic effect mainly mediated by flavonoids, fibre (carbohydrates) and mineral elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. The AE protein content also confers the extract nutritional properties. CONCLUSIONS These results support the hypothesis that AE could be used as a therapeutic adjuvant or as a nutritional supplement to control glucose levels and lipid metabolism in metabolic syndrome-associated diseases. Moreover, these results scientifically reinforce the popular use of the plant.

Abstract
Most of the deaths from skin cancer are caused by melanoma, a malignancy in which STAT3 plays a crucial role. The inhibition of STAT3 is considered a potential target to induce cell death, tumor regression and metastasis inhibition. The objective of this work was to evaluate the activity of the aqueous extract of Larrea divaricata (Aq), a fraction rich in polyphenols (EA),and the isolated compound quercetin-3-methyl ether (Q3ME) on B16F10 melanoma cells. The effects of Aq, EA and Q3ME were assessed on B16F10 cells by determining the proliferation, viability, apoptosis induction and the expression and phosphorylation of STAT3. The phytochemical composition of the extracts was determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Aq, EA and Q3ME presented antiproliferative activity on B6F10 cells through p-STAT3 inhibition and early and late apoptosis induction (EC50 EA= ≤0.1 µg/ml; Aq= 316 ± 30 µg/ml; Q3ME= <0.1 µg/ml). L. divaricata could be considered for the development of adjuvant phytotherapies in melanoma treatment.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and endogenous antioxidants. The aetiology and pathogenesis of several oral diseases are attributed to this process. The antioxidant enzymes secreted in the saliva by submandibular glands maintain oral health through the scavenging of ROS. The objective of this work was to study the capacity of an aqueous extract of L. divaricata (AE), and its majority compound, nordihydroguariaretic acid (NDGA), to modulate the pro-oxidant/antioxidant status in submandibular glands in a model of oxidative stress induced by streptozotocin (STZ) in rats. Methods To induce oxidative stress with STZ, a group of animals was treated i.p. with 1 X PBS (control group) and other group was injected i.p. once with STZ (60 mg/kg). Ten days after the treatment, blood samples were taken from the tail vain to determine the glucose levels. Animals with glucose values ≥300 mg/ml were selected. The submandibular glands of control and STZ treated animals were incubated with either the AE (500 μg/ml) or with NDGA (1.5 μg/ml), and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl groups, ROS and RNS, and the activity and expression of peroxidase (Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were assayed. Results AE decreased the levels of MDA (##P < 0.01) and protein carbonyl groups (#P < 0.05), and modulated the levels of ROS such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)(##P < 0.01), superoxide anion (O2.-) (#P < 0.05) and nitric oxide (NO) (#P < 0.05) in relation to the modulation of Px and iNOS expression. NDGA was found to be involved in these effects. Conclusions The antioxidant activity of the AE in the submandibular glands would allow the maintenance of the antioxidant pool to prevent oral oxidative diseases.

Abstract
Purpose A combination of extracts, from two plant species, ie, Coffea arabica and Larrea divaricata (Jarilla) (ECOHAIR®), is being successfully used in Argentina as a cosmetic for hair recovery in androgenic and areata alopecia, and for eyelash and eyebrow growth. The objectives of this prospective study were to evaluate the capacity of Jarilla–Coffea extract gel of improving hair growth in relation to thickness, appearance of new hair, and hair length in comparison with a placebo in premenopausal and postmenopausal volunteers and to identify possible signs of ocular adverse local reactions related to the application of the gel. Volunteers and methods An open-label, placebo-controlled, prospective study was performed in healthy premenopausal and postmenopausal women during a daily administration period of 2 months (eyebrow growth) and 3 months (eyelash growth). The thickness of hair was determined using a video microscope MedicalScope®. The appearance of new hairs and total area with hair in eyebrow and eyelash length were quantified using a photographic record with Fotofinder® (Germany). The number of volunteers presenting variation in growth of new hair and length were also recorded. Results The product significantly increased the thickness of eyebrows (20% in 80% women) and eyelashes (19.44% in 100% of women). The gel also increased the appearance of new hairs, total area with hair, and length but there was no statistical difference between treatment and placebo. Conclusion The gel was capable of improving growth of eyelashes and eyebrows by inducing principally hair thickening without causing local adverse effects in a high percentage of volunteers.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and protease inhibitor capacities on eggs and milk protein of a nor-dihydroguaiaretic (NDGA)-standardized aqueous extract of Larrea divaricata (AE) and to analyze the participation of polyphenols as NDGA in these actions. NDGA was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography; flavonoids and polyphenols were quantified by spectrophotometric methods as well as inhibition of lipid peroxidation, proteinase inhibitor capacity, advanced glycation end products (AGES) formation, and inhibition of albumin denaturation. The extract protected food for oxidative damage by preventing malondialdehyde formation in egg yolk and by preventing AGE formation in completely cooked eggs, also impeded albumin denaturation, and casein hydrolysis induced by trypsin and heat. Polyphenols, especially flavonoids and NDGA, were involved in these actions.

Abstract
A detailed study of biomaterials is mandatory to comprehend their feasible biomedical applications in terms of drug delivery and tissue regeneration. Particularly, mucoadhesive biopolymers such as chitosan (chi) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) have become interesting biomaterials regards to their biocompatibility and non-toxicity for oral mucosal drug delivery. In this work, pH-responsive biopolymer-silica composites (Chi-SiO2, Chi-CMC-SiO2) were developed. These two types of composites presented a different swelling behavior due to the environmental pH. Moreover, the nanocomposites were loaded with aqueous Larrea divaricata Cav. extract (Ld), a South American plant which presents antioxidant properties suitable for the treatment of gingivoperiodontal diseases. Chi-CMC-SiO2 composites showed the highest incorporation and reached the 100% of extract release in almost 4 days while they preserved their antioxidant properties. In this study, thermal and swelling behavior were pointed out to show the distinct water-composite interaction and therefore to evaluate their mucoadhesivity. Furthermore, a cytotoxicity test with 3T3 fibroblasts was assessed, showing that in both composites the addition of Larrea divaricata Cav. extract increased fibroblast proliferation. Lastly, preliminary in vitro studies were performed with simulated body fluids. Indeed, SEM-EDS analysis indicated that only chi-SiO2 composite may provide an environment for possible biomineralization while the addition of CMC to the composites discouraged calcium accumulation. In conclusion, the development of bioactive composites could promote the regeneration of periodontal tissue damaged throughout periodontal disease and the presence of silica nanoparticles could provide an environment for biomineralization.

Abstract
Background Urera aurantiaca is an Argentinean species that has been traditionally used to treat symptoms of inflammation. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of two specimens of Urera aurantiaca obtained in the provinces of Salta and Misiones, which are two different geographical areas of Argentina. Methods The anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts was tested in LPS-stimulated macrophages through the DPPH radical scavenging activity, the SOD-like activity, the reducing power and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The anti-inflammatory activity was also evaluated by the inhibition of albumin denaturation and proteinase inhibitory action tests. The total polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins content were quantified. Results Both extracts were able to reduce the augmented NO release in LPS-activated macrophages and showed antioxidant and in vitro anti-inflammatory activities. The polyphenols content was higher in the extract obtained from the specimen from Salta than in that obtained in Misiones. This finding accounts for the higher anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties obtained with the former. Conclusion The differences in chemical composition and the biological activities observed between the extracts are probably related to the different environmental conditions found in both provinces. Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Hair exerts protection, sensory functions, thermoregulation, and sexual attractiveness. Hair loss (alopecia) is caused by several diseases, drug intake, hormone imbalance, stress, and infections (Malassesia furfur). Drugs usually used in alopecia produce irreversible systemic and local side effects. An association of extracts of Coffea arabica and Larrea divaricata (ECOHAIR®) is successfully being commercialized in Argentina for hair growth. The aim of this study was to provide scientific support for the efficacy and innocuousness of ECOHAIR® in patients with noncicatricial alopecia during a 3-month treatment. METHODS The efficacy was determined through the assessment of an increase in hair volume, improvement in hair looks, growth of new hair, and a decrease in hair loss by the test of hair count and hair traction. The capacity to decrease the amount of dandruff was also evaluated as well as the adverse local effects caused by the treatment. RESULTS ECOHAIR® spray improved the overall hair volume and appearance; it increased its thickness, induced hair growth, and decreased hair loss. Besides, no adverse local reactions were observed upon treatment with the product. CONCLUSION This study provides scientific support for the clinical use of ECOHAIR® as a treatment to be used in noncicatricial alopecia.

Abstract
There is a well known link between inflammation and cancer during initiation, propagation and metastasis. Urera aurantiaca (UA) Wedd. (Urticaceae) is a medicinal plant used in traditional medicine to treat inflammatory processes with proven in vivo antiinflammatory and antinociceptive effects. The effects of a methanolic extract (UA) and a purified fraction (PF) on the proliferation of normal and tumoral lymphocytes under the effect of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) and on nitric oxide production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages was evaluated. Both UA and PF stimulated normal lymphocytes but, in presence of PGE2, a modulatory effect was observed. The normal lymphocyte proliferation induced by PGE2 was driven by pathways involving both PKC and H2 O2 . In macrophages, UA and PF did not modify cell viability and abrogated the synthesis of nitric oxide induced by lipopolysaccharide. In tumoral lymphocytes, the UA exerted a biphasic effect: at low concentrations it increased cell proliferation, while at high concentrations, it displayed an antiproliferative effect. UA and PF were capable of reverting the proliferative action of PGE2 . The tumoral cell proliferation induced by PGE2 is related to PKC, ERK 1/2 and MAP Kinase P38 pathways. The observed effects could be attributed to polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins. This work demonstrates the modulatory effects of the UA on different cell types during inflammatory conditions, which reinforces its antiinflammatory action. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Larrea divaricata is a plant with antiproliferative principles. We have previously identified the flavonoid quercetin-3-methyl ether (Q-3-ME) in an ethyl acetate fraction (EA). Both the extract and Q-3-ME were found to be effective against the EL-4 T lymphoma cell line. However, the mechanism underlying the inhibition of tumor cell proliferation remains to be elucidated. In this work, we analyzed the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the induction of apoptosis mediated by Q-3-ME and EA. Both treatments were able to induce apoptosis in a concentration-dependent and time-dependent manner. The western blot analysis revealed a sequential activation of caspases-9 and 3, followed by poly-(ADP-ribose)-polymerase cleavage. EA and Q-3-ME lowered the mitochondrial membrane potential, showing the activation of the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Q-3-ME and EA increased NO production and inducible NO synthase expression in tumor cells. The involvement of NO in cell death was confirmed by the nitric oxide synthases inhibitor L-NAME. In addition, EA and Q-3-ME induced a cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase. These drugs did not affect normal cell viability. This data suggested that EA and Q-3-ME induce an increase in NO production that would lead to the cell cycle arrest and the activation of the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Abstract
Urera aurantiaca Wedd. (Urticaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in traditional medicine to relieve pain in inflammatory processes. In the present study, the in vivo anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of U. aurantiaca methanolic extract and its possible mechanisms of action were investigated. The extract showed anti-inflammatory activity in the ear edema in mice test (34.3% inhibition), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was markedly reduced in animals administered with the extract: within 49.6% and 68.5%. In the histological analysis, intense dermal edema and intense cellular infiltration of inflammatory cells were markedly reduced in the ear tissue of the animals treated with the extract. In the carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats assay the extract provoked a significant inhibition of the inflammation (45.5%, 5 h after the treatment) and the MPO activity was markedly reduced (maximum inhibition 71.7%), The extract also exhibited significant and dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the increased vascular permeability induced by acetic acid. The extract presented antioxidant activity in both 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonic acid tests and its total phenol content was 35.4 ± 0.06 mg GAE/g of extract. Also, the extract produced significant inhibition on nociception induced by acetic acid (ED50 : 8.7 mg/kg, i.p.) administered intraperitoneally and orally. Naloxone significantly prevented this activity.

Abstract
The fresh leaves and stems of Ilex paraguariensis (Aquifoliaceae) are employed to prepare the commercial product used in North-eastern Argentina, Southern Brazil and Eastern Paraguay named yerba maté. The presence of polyphenols and xanthines, which present antioxidant activity, has been described in I. paraguariensis. In living organism, reactive oxygen species can cause tissue damage affecting erythrocyte membranes leading to hemolysis. The aim of this work was to evaluate the protective effect of an aqueous extract of I. paraguariensis (green leaves) on the hemolysis of red blood cells induced by hydrogen peroxide and to correlate this activity with the enzymatic activity related to hydrogen peroxide metabolism. The antioxidant activity of chlorogenic acid and caffeine was also analysed to evaluate their contribution to the activity of the crude extract. The extract as well as the isolated compounds protected red blood cells from hemolysis. This effect was related to a catalase-like activity. This study could contribute to the knowledge of the antioxidant activity of I. paraguariensis in view of the great quantities of yerba maté consumed by the population.

Abstract
Vicenin-2 (1), a flavonoid glycoside, was isolated and identified from an ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Urtica circularis. This crude extract was found to possess significant anti-inflammatory activity in a carrageenan-induced rat hind paw edema model (41.5% inhibition at a dose of 300 mg/kg; ip). The effects of 1 on several inflammatory mediators were investigated. In cultured murine macrophages, this compound modified LPS-induced total nitrite and TNF-α production, in addition to the LPS-induced translocation of the nuclear factor NF-κB.

Abstract
Tilia species have been used in Europe and in America to treat anxiety and also for the treatment of colds, influenza, bronchitis, fever and inflammation. Tilia × viridis is a Tilia species distributed widely in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The flavonoids present in Tilia species have antioxidant properties, acting as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers, principally on hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and the superoxide anion (O(2)(·-)), which are involved in many diseases, including cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical pattern of the ethanol extract of Tilia × viridis, principally the flavonoid content, and to evaluate the antiproliferative effects on both normal and tumoral cells, and the antioxidant activity in relation to H(2)O(2) modulation. The extract was found to present a selective antiproliferative activity on a lymphoma cell line and this was related to free radical scavenging activity. In addition, one of its main compounds, rutin, showed antioxidant effects related to peroxidase activity. T. × viridis may therefore be a source of antioxidant compounds that contribute to a selective antiproliferative action on tumoral cells, acting by modulation of H(2)O(2) levels.

Abstract
The flowers of Tilia species have been used in Europe for many years to treat colds, bronchitis, fever, inflammations and influenza. It is well known that lymphocytes play a role in acquired immunity related to pathogens and tumor cells attachment. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an aqueous (AE) and a dichloromethane extract (DM) from Tilia x viridis which is widely used and distributed in Argentina, on normal murine lymphocyte proliferation after being administered to mice. Both extracts presented a stimulatory effect on normal murine lymphocyte proliferation. The effect exerted by DM was principally related to macrophage activation, meanwhile AE exerted an important direct effect on lymphocytes related to the rutin presence. The stimulating effect, exerted on normal lymphocytes was due to a protective effect of apoptosis and also to cell IL2 production.

Abstract
Larrea divaricata exerts a dual effect on the proliferation of BW5147 cells. The aim of this work was to analyze the effect of leukotrienes on the antiproliferative action of the extract in relation to cyclic adenosine monophosphate production and protein kinase C activation. The extracts induced cyclic adenosine monophosphate and inhibited protein kinase C but induced leukotriene B4 production, which exerted contrary effects. These results suggest the finding of an extract free of compounds, which can increase leukotriene B4 level, in order to obtain a more active extract to be used in the treatment of lymphomas, positively modulated by leukotrienes.

Abstract
Larrea divaricata is a plant widely used in folk medicine in Argentina. It has been demonstrated that an aqueous extract of L. divaricata possesses a biphasic effect on cell proliferation, at low concentrations exerts a stimulatory action and at high concentrations exerts anti-proliferative effects upon the T lymphoma BW 5147; therefore, we propose in this paper to test the effect of the extract ‘in vitro’ and ‘in vivo’ in another T-cell lymphoma named EL-4. It was analyzed ‘in vitro’ cell proliferation by tritiated thymidine uptake and the effect of the extract on tumors induced in mice analyzing tumor progression and survival.The results showed that the aqueous extract induced the proliferation of tumor cells at all the concentrations studied. The results ‘in vivo’ showed that the aqueous extract stimulated significantly the size of tumors and that untreated mice lived longer than those treated. It is important to be very careful when plant extracts are selected for the treatment of several diseases. Consequently, before using a plant extract, specific scientific studies must be undertaken on different models to certificate therapeutic and adverse effects. Moreover, it can be said that L. divaricata has a specific anti-tumor mechanism of action depending on the targets.

Abstract
Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. (Anacardiaceae), is known in South America for its medicinal properties: antiarthritic, haemostatic, diuretic, tonic and useful for the treatment of respiratory diseases. Previously the isolation of a new cytotoxic 5-alkyl resorcinol derivative, 1,3-dihydroxy-5-(tridec-4',7'-dienyl) benzene, from a dichloromethane extract (DM) was reported. The aim of this work was to determine and to compare the antioxidant activity of DM and the isolated compound, 1,3-dihydroxy-5-(tridec-4',7'-dienyl) benzene. Moreover, the activity of both on the proliferation of tumoral and normal lymphocytes was determined. The compound was isolated and quantified by HPLC. The compound represented 0.036% of DM. The extract and the compound exerted antioxidant activity by DPPH and FTC methods. On tumoral cells, both exerted antiproliferative action but the compound was more active (EC(50) : 17.4 ± 1 µg/mL). On normal lymphocytes, both exerted a stimulatory effect on cell proliferation inversely related to concentration, the extract was more active than the compound (maximum effect: 300 ± 20% of stimulation). Most of the effects observed with the extract were independent of the isolated compound. DM could be an important source of antioxidant and immunomodulatory compounds to be studied on cancer diseases.

Abstract
Malassezia furfur is a lipodependent, dimorphic and saprophyte fungus which causes pityriasis versicolor, dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis in humans. The drugs available to treat this fungal infection are few. These drugs are highly toxic and are costly when used in prolonged treatments. For these reasons, it is necessary to find new compounds to treat these infections. Ilex paraguariensis St Hilaire is a plant that grows in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Ilex paraguariensis on the growth of M. furfur. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to identify and isolate compounds of I. paraguariensis and the agar-well diffusion method was used to assess the antifungal activity of the extract. The fungicidal/fungistatic effect was evaluated by the modified Thompson assay. The results demonstrated that the aqueous extract of Ilex paraguariensis (1000 mg/ml) possesses inhibitory activity against M. furfur. This antimalassezial activity was equivalent to 2.7 microg/ml of ketoconazole. Therefore, the topical use of Ilex paraguariensis extract as alternative antifungal agent can be suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Larrea divaricata Cav. (Zygophyllaceae) is a plant widely used in Argentina. MATERIAL AND METHODS We isolated different fractions of L. divaricata aqueous extract containing minor amounts of NDGA, and we analyzed these fractions on mouse macrophages. RESULTS We showed that a fraction without NDGA was capableof activating macrophages, principally through the production of mitochondrial anion superoxide and H(2)O(2). This could be important in the defense of infections. Moreover, this fraction decreased NO level suggesting an anti-inflammatory action. CONCLUSION These results indicate that NDGA was not the compound responsible for the immunomodulatory action exerted by the aqueous extract from L. divaricata.

Abstract
D-limonene is a common monoterpene found in nature. Previously, it has been demonstrated that it has antiproliferative effects on a lymphoma cell line by increasing the nitric oxide (NO) level. In the present work this mechanism is analyzed by evaluating the participation of MAP38 and ERK pathways. Limonene increased the NO levels by inducing cell apoptosis by two mechanisms: through the production of H(2)O(2) and ERK pathway activation at low concentrations, and through the inhibition of farnesylation of proteins and O(2)- production at high concentrations. Both mechanisms were related to the increase in total nitrites, and the production of oxidative stress intermediates was involved.

Abstract
Macrophages are involved in the host defense against infectious pathogens and tumors. Tilia species have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases, previously it was demonstrated that a dichloromethane (DM) extract possess antiproliferative action "in vitro" on a lymphoma cell line. The aim of this work was to study the "in vivo" effect of DM extract upon mice peritoneal macrophages. DM extract-activated macrophages phagocytosis through hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and nitric oxide (NO) production (phagocytosis (%): basal 16.93 +/- 0.18, DM extract 25.93 +/- 2.8; H(2)O(2) (M): basal 0.0022 +/- 0.00016, DM extract 0.0036 +/- 0.0005; NO (mM): basal 0.0052 +/- 0.0007, DM extract 0.0099 +/- 0.0004). These actions were mediated by cell superoxide dismutase activation. On the other hand, DM extract decreased tumor necrosis factor alpha but increased interleukin-10 in serum. These results suggest that the modulation activity exerted by the extract on immune system cells could be an important mechanism to acquire resistance to tumors and infectious diseases.

Abstract
Tea, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (Theaceae) is cultivated in Argentina in the northeastern region (provinces of Misiones and Corrientes), between 26 degrees and 28 degrees south latitude, the southernmost area of the world where tea is cultivated. The objective of this work was to determine the total polyphenol content and the in vitro antioxidant capacity of green and black tea cultivated and industrialized in Argentina. Twelve samples of eight brands were analyzed. The total polyphenol content was determined according to the International Organization for Standardization method (ISO) 14502-1 for the determination of substances characteristic of green and black tea. The antioxidant capacity was determined by the ferric thiocyanate method (FTC) and the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging assay. Green tea showed a higher polyphenol content than black tea. The total polyphenol concentration in green tea was found to vary from 21.02 +/- 1.54 to 14.32 +/- 0.45% of gallic acid equivalents (GAE), whereas in black tea, the polyphenol content ranged from 17.62 +/- 0.42 to 8.42 +/- 0.55% of GAE (P < 0.05). A similar profile was observed for the antioxidant capacity determined by both methods. The antioxidant activities were well correlated with the total polyphenol content (r (2) = 0.9935 for the ferric thiocyanate method and r (2) = 0.9141 for the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging assay). This is the first systematic screening for the quantification of polyphenols and antioxidant activity in tea commercialized in Argentine markets. The results obtained herein allow one to conclude that Argentine tea is of very good quality when compared to teas from other sources.

Abstract
Free radicals are involved in diverse disorders such as tumoral, central nervous system alterations, immunological and inflammatory pathologies. Peroxidase is an oral enzyme involved in the defense of the oral cavity. Ilex species such as Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil. and the commercial product made with it "Yerba Mate" are used traditionally as antirheumatics and for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases among others and also as a beverage with nutritional and stimulant properties. The presence of polyphenolic derivatives and flavonoids in the aqueous extract has been determined by HPLC analysis. In this study, the activity of aqueous extracts of I. paraguariensis and "Yerba Mate" on peroxidase secretion in female rat submandibular glands was investigated. The contribution to this pharmacological activity by some major hydrocynnamic acid derivatives present in the crude extracts, such as chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid and the most abundant methylxanthine, caffeine, was also evaluated. Spectrophotometrical determination of peroxidase activity showed that both extracts produced a significant increase in both secreted peroxidase and total peroxidase activity, though "Yerba Mate" showed a higher activity (EC(50) "Yerba Mate": 148+/-10 microg/ml; EC(50)I. paraguariensis: 841+/-20 microg/ml). The HPLC/DAD analysis of the crude extracts was performed and chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and caffeine were identified and quantified. The results (expressed as W/W percentage of dried material) were as follows: I. paraguariensis: chlorogenic acid: 2.80+/-0.30, caffeic acid: 0.023+/-0.004, caffeine: 1.06+/-0.06; "Yerba Mate": chlorogenic acid: 1.98+/-0.37; caffeic acid: 0.020+/-0.003, caffeine: 0.70+/-0.06. Caffeine and chlorogenic acid were proved to play an important role in the induction of peroxidase secretion induced by the extracts.

Abstract
Some coumarins possess enhancing effects on lymphocyte mitogen responsiveness. In this investigation, the activity of scopoletin, a coumarin that has been isolated from different plants and in this case specifically from T. cordata Mill., was evaluated. For this purpose, normal T lymphocytes and a hyperproliferative T lymphoma cell line were used. Scopoletin was found to exert a dual action on tumoral lymphocytes exhibiting both a cytostatic and a cytotoxic effect. These effects varied with the concentrations analysed and the time of cell incubation (EC(50): 251+/-15 microg/ml) and were associated to the induction of apoptosis. Scopoletin induced cell proliferation on normal T lymphocytes (Proliferation stimulation index: 1 microg/ml scopoletin: 1.26+/-0.1; 10 microg/ml scopoletin: 3+/-0.25; 100 microg/ml scopoletin: 1.86+/-0.08); this stimulatory action was found to be due to the interaction with kinase C (PKC) protein. These results indicate that scopoletin could be a potential antitumoral compound to be used for cancer treatment.

Abstract
Free radicals are associated with the appearance of disorders such as tumours, CNS alterations and inflammatory pathologies. Their levels are known to be increased in inflammatory diseases due to the activity of prostaglandins, which are related to protein secretion including enzymes. Peroxidase is an oral enzyme that is implicated in the defence of the oral cavity. In this paper, investigations of the effect and mechanism of the activity of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on peroxidase secretion of female rat submandibular glands are reported. Results showed that PGE2 significantly increased the secretion of submandibular peroxidase and that this effect was mediated by an increase of intracellular cAMP and nitric oxide synthase activation. This could imply that prostaglandins play a modulatory role in diseases where free radicals are involved.

Abstract
Aqueous extracts or infusions obtained from the flowers of Tilia species are widely used for the treatment of anxiety in folk medicine. In this work, the antiproliferative action of aqueous, dichloromethane and ethanol extracts obtained from Tilia cordata Mill. flowers on tumoral (BW 5147 lymphoma) and normal lymphocytes is described. Both extracts showed a selective action on tumoral cells, inducing apoptosis. In the case of normal T cells these extracts suppressed mitogen-induced proliferation without affecting viability, suggesting a suppressive but not cytotoxic effect. These effects were clearly concentration dependent. A coumarin (scopoletin), the main component in the dichloromethane extract presented antiproliferative action on BW 5147 cells, suggesting that it may be at least partly responsible for the activity displayed by this extract.

Abstract

Peroxidase is an oral enzyme implicated in the defence of oral cavity. It has been determined that flavonoids and lignans possess antioxidant and free radical scavenging either directly or indirectly, usually by means of increasing the secretion of free radicals scavenger enzymes. Larrea divaricata Cav. is a plant used in folk Argentine medicine for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory ailments. In this study, we have determined the effect and mechanism of action of an aqueous extract of the leaves of L. divaricata and NDGA on peroxidase secretion in female rat submandibular glands. The extract significantly increased the secretion and total peroxidase. % of secreted peroxidase (X +/- S.E.M.): extract maximum response: 150 +/- 10; % of total peroxidase (X +/- S.E.M.): extract maximum response: 1000 +/- 90. The effect of the extract on peroxidase secretion was mediated by beta1 adrenoceptors (% of secreted peroxidase: extract + atenol maximum response: 50 +/- 4 ). Meanwhile, NDGA produced a decrease in peroxidase secretion (peroxidase secreted: basal: 0.44 +/- 0.03; NDGA 2.5 x 10(-6) M: 0.20 +/- 0.02; prostaglandins E2 (PGE2) 10(-7)M: 1.32 +/- 0.5; NDGA + PGE2: 0.46 +/- 0.035), an effect that was exerted by the inhibition on prostaglandins synthesis.

Abstract
In this work, we characterized alpha(1)-adrenoceptor expression and functionality in rat submandibular gland. Cumulative dose-response curve of methoxamine was constructed to determine the peroxidase secretion by glands from proestrous, estrous, metestrous and diestrous rats. They were compared to those from animals untreated or treated with sex hormones, estradiol and progesterone. The sensitivity of glands to an alpha(1)-adrenoceptor agonist varied depending on hormonal state, i.e. glands from proestrous and estrous were more sensitive to the stimulatory action of methoxamine than those from metestrous, diestrous and ovariectomised animals. The efficacy of the alpha(1) agonist was enhanced in glands from ovariectomised estrogen-treated rats but it was ineffective in glands from ovariectomised progesterone-treated rats. The functional studies correlated with 3H-prazosin binding assays in which estrogen increased alpha(1)-adrenoceptor density while progesterone decreased it. The results demonstrated that alpha(1)-adrenoceptor expression and functionality in rat submandibular glands are apparently under hormonal control and probably represent other examples of bidirectional interactions between neuronal and exocrine systems.
