Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the role of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to help in differential diagnosis between papilledema and a rare case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with Morning Glory Syndrome (MGS). METHODS Observational case report. RESULTS A 22-year old man was referred to Eye clinic from Neurological unit with a diagnosis of papilledema in right eye. OCTA scans on the optic disc revealed a dense radial peripapillary vascular network while two polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) were present in peripapillary region at the edge of staphyloma in corrispondence of choriocapillary layer. Therefore, the patient underwent three-monthly intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor. One and six months after loading phase, the PCVs showed no clinical activity at structural spectral domain-OCT and OCTA. CONCLUSION This case revealed the crucial role of OCTA as an efficace diagnostic technique in discriminating papilledema from MGS complicated by CNV, allowing to make differential diagnosis, useful in ophthalmological and neurological clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE To detect the vessel density of choriocapillaris (CC) vascular network in eyes affected by choroidal osteoma and in eyes complicated by macular neovascularization (MNV), using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS In this retrospective study, twenty-eight eyes of 28 patients were divided into three groups: group 1 including patients with calcified choroidal osteoma, group 2 including patients with decalcified choroidal osteoma, and group 3 including patients with decalcified choroidal osteoma complicated by MNV. OCTA analyzed the vessel density of CC in these lesions localized in the peripapillary region. RESULTS We enrolled 12 eyes with calcified choroidal osteoma, 11 eyes with decalcified choroidal osteoma, and 5 eyes with decalcified choroidal osteoma complicated by MNV. The eyes with decalcified choroidal osteoma and MNV revealed a statistically significant reduction in vessel density of the CC respect to the other groups (p < 0.001). Moreover, the vessel density of CC in decalcified choroidal osteoma was significantly reduced compared to calcified choroidal osteoma (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS OCTA allowed a quantitative evaluation of choriocapillaris vessel density in choroidal osteoma, in order to detect the changes of this vascular network, which could lead to the development of MNV. Abstract
The identification of non-invasive biomarkers to investigate and monitor retinal structural and vascular changes in multiple sclerosis (MS) represents an interesting source of debate. Until now optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) evaluated the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and areas of retinal non-perfusion only in the macular region in MS patients. It could be interesting to identify possible biomarkers, useful in assessing the ischemic areas also in the near peripheral retina, since FAZ enlargement and the areas of peripheral retinal non-perfusions share common pathogenic processes. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the correlation between the FAZ area and retinal vessel density (VD) in the near peripheral retina by new wide-field optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients affected by relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS). Moreover, we compared the FAZ area and the VD of superficial and deep capillary plexuses in the fovea region and in the near peripheral retina (6.4 × 6.4 mm) between RR-MS patients and healthy controls by means of a Solix full-range OCTA. Last, we also detected the changes in structural OCT parameters (ganglion cell complex and retinal nerve fiber layer). Thirty-three eyes of 33 RR-MS patients and 35 eyes of 35 healthy controls were enrolled. RR-MS patients showed a lower VD in the superficial capillary plexus and a significant increase in the FAZ area compared with controls. The deep capillary plexus revealed a reduced VD although not statistically significant in patients with respect to controls. In the patients' group, the FAZ area showed significantly negative correlations with VD of superficial capillary plexuses in the foveal and whole region, while the FAZ area did not negatively correlate with the VD of the deep capillary plexus. The significant correlations among OCTA parameters could demonstrate the FAZ area as a possible biomarker for assessing the perfusion status in the near peripheral retina, useful in RR-MS management. These findings could confirm the role of vascular dysfunction in the pathogenetic mechanisms of MS.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate retinal and choriocapillary vessel density (VD) changes in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) treated with half-fluence verteporfin photodynamic therapy (vPDT) or eplerenone, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS Patients affected by CSC and treated with vPDT and eplerenone were retrospectively studied. At baseline and 3 months after each treatment, all patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, including an evaluation of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fundus examination, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCTA. RESULTS Forty-eight eyes of patients with CSC were analysed. Twenty-four eyes were placed in the vPDT group, and 24 eyes formed the eplerenone group. In both groups, OCTA showed a significant improvement in the VD of deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillaris (CC) after treatments with respect to baseline (p < 0.001), whereas the VD of superficial capillary plexus (SCP) did not show significant differences (p > 0.05). The PDT group demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the VD of DCP and CC with respect to the eplerenone group (DCP p = 0.012; CC p = 0.004). A statistically significant reduction with respect to baseline in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) (p = 0.001 for vPDT group; p = 0.001 for eplerenone group) and in central foveal thickness (CFT) (p = 0.001 for vPDT group; p = 0.001 for eplerenone group) was also found. The SFCT was significantly thinnest in the PDT group with respect to the eplerenone group (p = 0.021). CONCLUSION OCTA allowed us to study retinal and choriocapillary vascular changes in patients with CSC treated with vPDT and eplerenone.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To measure the corneal thickness (CT), corneal epithelial thickness (CET), and corneal stromal thickness (CST) in patients affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus with good glycemic control and without any signs of diabetic retinopathy using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS 60 eyes of 30 diabetic patients and 60 normal eyes of 30 healthy subjects underwent AS-OCT, evaluation of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, tear film breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer I test and fundus examination. The CT, CET, and CST maps generated corresponded to a 6-mm diameter area of the cornea that was divided into 17 sectors. We compared the CT, CET, and the CST of each sector obtained in the diabetic group with those obtained in the control group. RESULTS No significant difference in terms of age, gender, BCVA, IOP, TBUT, and Schirmer I test between the two study groups was observed. The CT, CET, and CST in the central section were significantly thickened in diabetic patients than in controls (p<0.001). Also, each paracentral and midperipheral sector was significantly increased in patients compared to controls (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The evaluation of the CT, CET, and CST by AS-OCT could be a valid and non-invasive biomarker in patients affected by diabetes mellitus, useful in early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) in terms of reliability in detecting dark halo in patients affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) complicated with type 1 macular neovascularization (MNV). METHODS Eighty-nine eyes of 89 patients were analyzed at the University of Naples Federico II between January 2018 and October 2021. Each patient underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation including fluorescein angiography, ICGA, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and OCTA. OCTA and ICGA images of dark halo were compared. The paired Student's test and intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the differences in dark halo measurements between OCTA and ICGA images. RESULTS Thirty-six eyes of 36 patients were included in this prospective study. Dark halo area was significantly larger in OCTA than in ICGA (1.49 ± 1.8 mm2 vs. 0.54 ± 0.5 mm2; p = 0.001). Moreover, the agreement between the two types of devices for measuring dark halo areas was poor, with a low intraclass coefficient correlation (0.397). CONCLUSION OCTA could be a useful and necessary tool to investigate dark halo in neovascular AMD due to its ability to visualize the areas of reduced vessel density around MNV in greater detail compared to ICGA. Abstract
Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy. The aim of this retrospective study was to report the results after ruthenium-106 (Ru-106) plaque brachytherapy for uveal melanoma in terms of tumor control, visual acuity, radiation-related complications, tumor recurrence, metastases, and patients’ survival rate during 4 years’ follow-up. A total of 355 eyes from 355 patients have been treated with Ru-106 plaque brachytherapy for uveal melanoma between February 2011 and March 2020. Five patients were lost to follow-up, and then 350 eyes of 350 patients (mean age 58 ± 11 years) were enrolled in this retrospective study. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination including echography and spectral domain–optical coherence tomography. The mean follow-up was 4 years (3 months to 9 years). After treatment, the mean tumor thickness was reduced to 1.75 ± 0.21 mm. Radiation complications were found in 63% of patients: 38% showed radiation maculopathy, 11% had optic neuropathy, and 14% developed cataracts. Cancer-free survival was 99%, 97%, and 85%, respectively, at 5, 7, and 9 years. Ru-106 plaque brachytherapy represents a reliable treatment of uveal melanoma. This technique is valid and safe with a low rate of ocular complications during a long-term follow-up.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in structural spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), OCT Angiography (OCTA) parameters, and visual acuity, 1 year after endoscopic endonasal approach for the removal of an intra-suprasellar pituitary adenoma compressing optic chiasm and compare outcomes with 48 hours postoperative data. Methods Sixteen eyes of eight patients (4 males, 4 females, mean age 52 ± 11 years) were enrolled in this prospective study. The primary outcome was to evaluate the changes over time before and after surgery, analyzing the Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), Ganglion Cell Complex (GCC), Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) thicknesses, the retinal vessel density (VD) of Superficial Capillary Plexus (SCP), Deep Capillary Plexus (DCP), Radial Peripapillary Capillary (RPC) and the Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ). The secondary outcome was to identify potential biomarkers that could predict visual acuity changes after 1-year follow-up. Results When comparing SD-OCT and OCTA measurements obtained after 1 year with those observed 48 hours after surgery, GCC and RNFL were significantly improved. After a significant reduction at 48 hours, GCC thickness showed a significant increase at 1 year after surgery (p = 0.007), while a significant restoration of RNFL thickness was found at 1 year (p = 0.005), as well as the VD of SCP, DCP, and RPC values. FAZ area did not change over time. BCVA significantly improved at each time after surgery (p = 0.037, p = 0.013). A statistically significant correlation was found between the preoperative BCVA, VD of SCP, DCP, RPC, and the postoperative BCVA at 1 year (p = 0.017, p = 0.029, p = 0.031, p = 0.023). Conclusion SD-OCT and OCTA provide helpful information to identify the retinal structural and vascular improvements 1 year after surgery. OCTA parameters could serve as potential predictive markers for visual acuity recovery at long-term follow-up.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To identify the changes in vessel density (VD) of choriocapillaris (CC) and in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and to evaluate their correlation with functional response after three monthly intravitreal injections of Ranibizumab (loading phase) in patients affected by Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy (PCV). METHODS A total of 30 eyes of 30 PCV patients and 30 eyes of 30 healthy subjects as control group were enrolled in this prospective study. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was measured at baseline and after one month from third intravitreal injections in each patient. The VD of CC was evaluated in macular area by means of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). Central macular thickness (CMT) and SFCT were analyzed by Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI)-OCT. RESULTS The VD of CC showed statistically lower values in PCV patients at baseline respect to after loading phase (LP) and normal eyes (p<0.001). CMT and SFCT revealed a statistically significant reduction after LP (p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the reduced SFCT, CMT at baseline and the improvement of BCVA after LP (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The close relationship between the thinner SFCT and better visual outcome after LP reveals the role of the EDI-OCT assessment of choroid as predictive biomarker of functional response to anti-VEGF therapy. This tool could provide a quantitative evaluation of structural features of choroid avoiding mistakes of evaluation at OCTA.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate a case of macular retinoschisis associated with a TJP2 mutation in a young woman affected by a Progressive Familiar Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC) using multimodal imaging. METHODS Observational case report. RESULTS A 35-year-old woman, undergone a liver transplant for PFIC, was referred to Eye Clinic for complete ophthalmological examination and multimodal imaging. Fundus examination showed no significant alterations in both eyes while multicolor image revealed the presence of several cystes in macular region. The autofluorescence image highlighted small areas of iperautofluorescence in macular region. En-face image showed a "coral shape pattern" and structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed foveal hyporeflective cystic spaces in outer and inner nuclear layers, areas of splitting within the nerve fiber layer (schisis areas) and an initial preretinal fibrosis. Lastly, OCT-angiography (OCT-A) demonstrated small perifoveal teleangectasias and slight reduction of the foveal avascular zone area. CONCLUSION Multimodal imaging could help to highlight the presence of a rare retinal disorder associated with a gene related systemic disease.

Abstract
Purpose To quantitatively investigate the role of deep capillary plexus (DCP) in patients affected by type 3 macular neovascularization (MNV), compared to patients with reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) eyes and healthy controls, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods In this prospective observational study, a total of seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients were included. Group 1 consisted of 40 eyes of 40 patients with stage 1 of type 3 MNV (22 males, 18 females, mean age 73.7, SD ± 6.60) and group 2 included 38 eyes of 38 patients with RPD (17 males, 21 females, mean age 73.2, SD ± 4.55). The control group included 40 eyes of 40 healthy subjects (20 males, 20 females, mean age 71.4, SD ± 6.36 years). We evaluated the retinal vessel density (VD) of superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) using OCTA. Results Patients with diagnosis of type 3 MNV showed statistically lower values of VD in DCP with respect to controls and to RPD group (p < 0.001), while there were no statistical differences between RPD and control group in macular region. No significant differences in VD of SCP were detected among the three study groups. Conclusion OCTA provides a reproducible, non-invasive detailed quantitative analysis of retinal vascular features and changing in early-stage type 3 MNV patients, which allowed to shed the light on the main role of DCP ischemia in the development of type 3 MNV. ![]()

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated changes in retinal vessel density in macular and papillary regions in post-SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia patients by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Design Prospective, observational, cohort study. Methods Forty eyes of 40 patients (mean age: 49.7 ± 12.6 years old) post-SARS-CoV-2 infection and 40 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. COVID-19 patients had to be fully recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia and were evaluated 6 months after COVID-19 infection. The primary outcome resulted from OCTA studies of the following vascular structures: vessel density (VD) in the retinal superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC) compared to those of controls. Structural spectral domain (SD)-OCT parameters were also evaluated: ganglion cell complex (GCC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Results The patients showed a significant reduction in VD of the SCP in whole images and in the DCP in all sectors compared to those in healthy subjects (P <.05). COVID-19 patients featured a reduced VD of the RPC compared to that in controls (P <.001). No differences were found in the GCC, whereas the RNFL was reduced in the COVID-19 group compared to that in controls (P = .012). Significant correlations were found between the RNFL and VD of the SCP, DCP, RPC, and FAZ area in the COVID-19 group (P <.05). Conclusions OCTA showed retinal vascular changes in subjects fully recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia. These findings could be a consequence of a thrombotic microangiopathy that affected retinal structures as well as other systemic organs. OCTA could represent a valid, noninvasive biomarker of early vascular dysfunction after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/AIMS Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is an acute infarction of the prelaminar anterior optic disc, resulting from the occlusion of posterior ciliary arteries. Here, we evaluated the correlation between structural and vascular features in a case of resolved NAION. METHODS Observational case report. RESULTS A 50-year-old male patient was referred at an Eye clinic due to an altitudinal visual field defect in the left eye, occurred 9 months before. Fundus examination was unremarkable, while structural SD-OCT reveals retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell complex (GCC) thinning associated with reduction of peripapillary vascular density at OCT Angiography. DISCUSSION We found a precise spatial correlation among RNFL and GCC thinning, peripapillary vascular reduction and visual field defects. This case demonstrates that OCTA represents a new, valid and non-invasive imaging technique in the diagnosis and follow-up of NAION, even after the resolution of the acute phase, in the absence of clinical signs at fundus examination.

Abstract
Retinal, choroidal and optic disc vascularity has never been evaluated in patients taking PDE5is long-term. The aim of our study was to evaluate the neurostructural and vascular changes after long-term use of tadalafil, using spectral domain (SD)-optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). In the present clinical trial, 27 patients who have been taking tadalafil 20 mg on alternate days (OAD) for at least 6 months (Group A) were enrolled. The matched group consisted of 27 healthy men (Group B). Both groups of patients underwent SD-OCT to study ganglion cell complex (GCC), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and choroidal thickness and OCTA for the evaluation of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), choriocapillaris (CC) and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC). A reduction in SCP, DCP and RPC vessel density was found in patients using tadalafil long-term. Retinal and optic disc toxicity may be detected using modifications of capillary vessel density. Further studies are needed to investigate the possibility of a causal association.

Abstract
Simple Summary β-thalassemia represents a hematological disorder that determines anomalous hemolysis and ineffective erythropoiesis. The patients, undergoing regular lifelong blood transfusion, show an iron overload in the tissues that requires an iron chelation therapy. Both iron accumulation and iron-chelating agents cause ocular manifestations, such as retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) degeneration, RPE mottling, cataract, optic neuropathy and retinal venous tortuosity. In this cross-sectional study, we described the retinal and choriocapillaris microvascular changes in different clinical phenotypes of β-thalassemia that may reflect a tissue hypoxia status and oxidative damages. Abstract In this cross-sectional study we assessed the vascular alterations in retinal and choriocapillaris perfusion in patients affected by β-thalassemia, by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). A total of 124 eyes of 62 patients (mean age 44.74 ± 5.79 years old) affected by β-thalassemia (transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT), non-transfusion dependent thalassemia (NTDT) and minor) were compared to 40 eyes of twenty healthy subjects. We evaluated the vessel density (VD) in superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus, radial peripapillary capillary, choriocapillaris and the foveal avascular zone area. The TDT group showed a statistically significant reduction in retinal and choriocapillaris VD respect to controls and the other groups (p < 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in OCTA parameters between β-thalassemia minor and controls. The NTDT group showed a significant reduction in VD in deep capillary plexus respect to controls and β-thalassemia minor. Significant negative correlations were shown in TDT group between foveal avascular zone and hemoglobin (r = −0.437, p = 0.044) and between ferritin levels and VD of choriocapillaris (r = −0.431, p = 0.038). The OCTA parameters provided a deeper understanding on retinal and choriocapillaris vascular impairment affected by tissue hypoxia levels and the oxidative stress in different clinical phenotypes of the β-thalassemia.

Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the vascular features in eyes with Coats disease, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), at baseline and after 3 monthly intravitreal injections of ranibizumab. Fifteen eyes of 15 consecutive patients affected by Coats' disease were recruited in this study. All patients underwent the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) evaluation, fundus examination, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), multicolor imaging, structural Spectral Domain (SD)-OCT and OCTA at baseline and 1 month after the third monthly ranibizumab injection (loading phase). Fifteen patients completed the study, of whom nine were males and six females. Mean age was 20.4 ± 2 years. BCVA was 0.46 ± 0.11 logMar and 0.47 ± 0.12 logMar at baseline and after treatment, respectively (p = 0.164). SD-OCT revealed no significant decrease in central macular thickness (486.33 μm ± 93.37 at baseline vs. 483.4 μm ± 80.97 after treatment; p = 0.915). The subretinal exudates persisted in macular region after intravitreal injections. OCTA showed a general vascular rarefaction in superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillary (CC) that did not change after loading phase. This study showed no functional and vascular improvement following 3 monthly ranibizumab injections. OCTA, non-invasive technique, could be useful during follow up of these patients and provide a better understand of pathogenesis of this disorder.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the retinal vessel density (VD) in the macular region and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with and without disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRILs) after resolution of diabetic macular edema. Methods Thirty-seven eyes of 37 DRIL patients (mean age 63 ± 13.97 years), 30 eyes of 30 no DRIL patients and 35 eyes of 35 controls were enrolled in this study. We evaluated the VD in the macular region of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and FAZ area. Results DRIL and no DRIL groups showed decreased VD in SCP and DCP (p<0.05) and a larger FAZ area (p<0.001) compared to controls. However, DRIL patients revealed a statistically significant reduction in VD of SCP (p = 0.041) and a greater FAZ area (p<0.001) with respect to no DRIL patients. We found a significant negative correlation between the VD of the foveal SCP (r = -0.414, p = 0.011), foveal DCP (r = -0.358, p = 0.025) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in DRIL group. Moreover there was a significant positive correlation between the FAZ area (r = 0.425, p = 0.034) and BCVA. Therefore, in presence of DRILs lower VD values of SCP and DCP and a larger FAZ area correlated with a worse visual acuity. In no DRILs group, there was a significant negative correlation between the VD of the foveal DCP and BCVA. Conclusion OCTA highlights the role of retinal vascular ischemia in the pathogenesis of DRILs. This parameter could represent an important functional predictive factor in diabetic patients.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the possible relationship between the changes in retinal vessel density (VD) by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and the vascular alterations involving renal, cardiovascular and central nervous systems in patients affected by Fabry disease (FD). In 50 FD patients, the retinal superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) in macular region were evaluated by OCTA examination. The patients also underwent a brain magnetic resonance imaging scan, renal and echocardiographic examinations with quantification of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (PAPs) and left atrial volume index (LAVi). The VD of SCP and DCP was inversely related with E/e’ ratio, LAVi, interventricular septal thickness, global longitudinal strain (GLS) and PAPs (p < 0.05). No relationship was found, with a multivariate analysis, between OCTA parameters and kidney function and neuroradiological signs of central nervous system involvement. OCTA could be a new vascular biomarker in FD, revealing a strong correlation between retinal capillary damage and myocardial impairment, possibly preceding both renal dysfunction and cerebrovascular involvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the changes in retinal and choriocapillaris vessel density (VD) in patients effected by early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). METHODS A total of seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients (43 male, 35 female, mean age 72.61 ± 5.15) with non-neovascular AMD (38 eyes with early AMD and 40 eyes with RPD) was recruited in this observational prospective study. Forty eyes of 40 healthy subjects represented the control group. The VD was measured in superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and choriocapillaris in different macular regions. RESULTS There were no significant differences in VD of the SCP and DCP among the controls and the two study groups (p > 0.05). The VD of the choriocapillaris revealed a statistically significant reduction in early AMD and RPD groups respect to controls (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the patients with RPD showed a significantly decreased VD respect to patients with early AMD in different macular regions (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The quantitative analysis of retinal and choriocapillaris blood flow by OCTA provided useful information regarding the vascular changes in non-neovascular AMD patients suggesting that the choriocapillaris loss is mainly involved in the pathogenesis of RPD.

Abstract
The melanocytoma is a benign, highly pigmented tumor, localized on or adjacent to the optic disc. Its malignant trasformation represents a rare event. We describe a case of a 43-years old woman returned to our observation 29 years later with a malignant melanoma from an optic disc melanocytoma evaluated by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). OCTA is a valid, non-invasive, dyeless and reliable method that could improve the diagnosis of this rare case of malignant trasformation of an optic disc melanocytoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Choroidal metastasis represents the most common malignant intraocular tumours. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to detect the structural and vascular features of choroidal metastasis by multimodal imaging. METHODS Sixteen eyes of 16 patients with choroidal metastasis were enrolled in this prospective study. The multimodal imaging was performed in all patients: fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT), OCT angiography (OCTA), and ultrasonography. RESULTS The choroidal metastasis was located in the macula region in 9 eyes (57%) and in the extramacular region in 7 eyes (43%). EDI-OCT showed a mean thickness of 950 ± 246 µm, a smooth anterior tumour surface in 5 eyes (31%), and a lumpy bumpy appearance in 11 eyes (69%). The most frequent EDI-OCT features were represented by choriocapillaris thinning (100%), shaggy photoreceptors (82%), subretinal fluid with speckles (69%), subretinal lipofuscin pigment (6%), absence of drusen (100%), optical shadowing (94%), low-internal optical reflectivity (75%), and retinal pigment epithelium alterations (43%). OCTA revealed an absence of intratumoral vascular network in all cases. CONCLUSIONS The multimodal imaging contributed to greater insights into the anatomical and vascular features of choroidal metastasis. It allows for the collection of useful information to establish an appropriate diagnosis and follow-up.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the present study is to analyze the changes in retinal vessel density (VD), using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A), in patients that received endoscopic endonasal approach for the removal of an intra-suprasellar pituitary adenoma compressing optic chiasm. Methods We evaluated the VD in Superficial Capillary Plexus (SCP), Deep Capillary Plexus (DCP), Radial Peripapillary Capillary (RPC) and the Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ) area in a series of fourteen patients (7 males, 7 females, mean age 56 ± 13 years), as compared to healthy controls. We also detected the structural Spectral Domain (SD)-OCT parameters: Ganglion Cell Complex (GCC), Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL), visual field parameters (Mean Deviation, Pattern Standard Deviation) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA). These measurements were performed prior than surgery and 48 hours after. Results The patients showed a significant decrease in VD of the macular and papillary regions, a significant increase in FAZ area, a significant impairment in SD-OCT, VF parameters and BCVA respect to 14 eyes of 14 healthy controls (p<0.05), at pre-op evaluation. In patients group the VD in SCP, DCP and RPC increased after surgery respect to baseline but the difference turned to be out statistically significant only in RPC (p = 0.003). Also the BCVA (p = 0.040) and the Mean Deviation at visual field (p = 0.015) significantly improved after surgery. While there was a reduction in structural OCT parameters but it was statistically significant only in GCC (p = 0.039). A positive correlation was found between the preoperative VD of the RPC, Mean Deviation, BCVA and the postoperative Mean Deviation (r = 0.426 p = 0.027; r = 0.624 p = 0.001; r = 0.515 p = 0.006). Conclusion OCT-A allows to detect the early changes occurring within 48 hours after surgery showing that the improvement in retinal vessel density could occur before the recovery of the structural OCT parameters and can be a positive predictive factor for the functional recovery.

Abstract
In this prospective study, we analysed the changes in retinal vessel density (VD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with commotio retinae up to 6 months after blunt ocular trauma. We analysed the VD in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area at 48 h, and 1, 3 and 6 months after the trauma and compared results with those of healthy fellow eyes. We also evaluated the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the structural, spectral domain (SD)-OCT parameters: ganglion cell complex (GCC) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). A total of 18 eyes of 18 patients (8 males, 10 females, mean age 49.61 ± 9.2 years) and 18 healthy control eyes were evaluated. GCC and RNFL thicknesses showed a significant trend towards progressively lower values from 1 month and 3 months after the trauma, respectively, compared to healthy eyes (p < 0.005). The reduction in SD-OCT parameters reached a plateau at 6 months. Similar behaviour was found in the VD of the SCP and RPC that significantly decreased, starting from 1 and 3 months after the trauma, respectively (p < 0.001). At 6 months, the VD values were stable. The DCP presented an initial decrease of VD (p < 0.001), and after 1 month, the values statistically increased until the sixth month, reaching values similar to those of the control group. The FAZ area and BCVA did not show statistically significant changes during the follow-up. OCTA provided a detailed and quantitative analysis of early retinal vascular perfusion alterations after commotio retinae, demonstrating that the impairment of the retinal microvasculature and its progressive changes over time occurred even in the absence of compromised visual acuity.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate corneal epithelial thickness (CET), corneal densitometry (CD) in 84 myopic eyes (57 patients) more than 22 years after photorefractive keratectomy, using anterior segment-optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and Scheimpflug imaging system. The CET was significantly higher in all operated eyes than in unoperated eyes in central sector. A statistically significant increase in CD in corneal anterior layer of central sector was shown in groups of operated eyes with greater ablation depth respect to unoperated eyes. While there was no significant difference in CD between the operated eyes groups with lower ablation depth and unoperated eyes. A significant trend toward higher values in anterior CD with deeper ablations in central sector was found. These noninvasive imaging techniques allow to better understand the corneal remodeling process after photoablation and to monitor the patients over time.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the early anatomic choroidal alterations in eyes with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) undergoing photodynamic therapy (PDT). DESIGN Multicenter retrospective cohort study. METHODS A total of 77 patients and 81 eyes with chronic CSCR treated with PDT and 64 untreated fellow eyes were evaluated. Central macular thickness (CMT) and choroidal features including subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal choroidal area (LCA), and stromal choroidal area (SCA) were analyzed. Choroidal vascularity index (CVI) was calculated in all study eyes at baseline and at 1- and 3-months post-PDT. RESULTS In eyes receiving PDT, Snellen visual acuity (VA) significantly improved at months 1 and 3 (P < .001). CMT and SFCT showed a significant reduction from baseline at months 1 and 3 (P < .001), whereas TCA and LCA showed a significant decrease only at the 1-month follow-up visit. Baseline mean TCA and LCA were 2.30 ± 1.41 mm2 and 1.23 ± 0.73 mm2, respectively, and decreased to 2.07 ± 1.21 mm2 and 1.08 ± 0.63 mm2 at the 1-month follow-up visit, respectively (P = .01). No significant changes were recorded for SCA and CVI. In the fellow eye group, VA, CMT, and all choroidal parameters showed no differences between baseline and any follow-up visits (all P > .05). CONCLUSIONS After PDT for chronic CSCR we observed sustained reductions in CMT and SFCT, while reductions in TCA and LCA were only noted at the 1-month follow-up interval. These choroidal parameters may provide additional quantitative biomarkers to evaluate the anatomic response to therapy but await further prospective validation.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE A noninvasive method based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of tears was proposed as a support for diagnosing neurodegenerative pathologies, including different forms of dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this field, timely and reliable discrimination and diagnosis are critical aspects for choosing a valid medical therapy, and new methods are highly required. AIM The aim is to evince spectral differences in SERS response of human tears from AD affected, mild cognitive impaired (MCI), and healthy control (Ctr) subjects. APPROACH Human tears were characterized by SERS coupled with multivariate data analysis. Thirty-one informed subjects (Ctr, MCI, and AD) were considered. RESULTS Average SERS spectra from Ctr, MCI, and AD subjects evidenced differences related to lactoferrin and lysozyme protein components. Quantitative changes were also observed by determining the intensity ratio between selected bands. We also constructed a classification model that discriminated among AD, MCI, and Ctr subjects. The model was built using the scores obtained by performing principal component analysis on specific spectral regions (i-PCA). CONCLUSIONS The results are very encouraging with interesting perspectives for medical applications as support of clinical diagnosis and discrimination of AD from other forms of dementia.

Abstract
PURPOSE To detect the vessel density (VD) of the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) in eyes affected by pathological myopia with or without a peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation (PICC) and in eyes with PICC complicated by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS We prospectively enrolled highly myopic patients from January 2016 to December 2019 at the Eye Clinic of the University of Naples "Federico II." We divided included patients into three groups: group 1 including patients with PICC complicated by CNV; group 2 including patients with PICC without complications; group 3 including patients with high myopia without PICC and CNV. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Bonferroni post hoc analysis was used to evaluate differences in VD of radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) in papillary whole, peripapillary regions and its sectors among the three groups. RESULTS We enrolled 12 highly myopic eyes with PICC complicated by CNV, 21 highly myopic eyes with PICC without CNV and 23 highly myopic eyes without PICC. The myopic eyes with PICC revealed a statistically significant reduction in VD of the RPC comparing to the other groups (p < 0.001), especially in eyes affected by myopic PICC complicated by CNV (p < 0.001). These results were similar analyzing the VD in different sectors of the peripapillary region among the three groups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION OCTA detects the changes in peripapillary vascular density of highly myopic eyes. We demonstrated that the RPC vasculature is significantly influenced by the presence of PICC, especially in myopic eyes developing a CNV.

Abstract
Background: To evaluate retinal vessel density (VD) in macular and in peripapillary regions in patients with recent onset of multiple sclerosis, at initial demyelinating event (IDE) and in matched relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. Methods: We evaluated VD in superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus, choriocapillaris and radial peripapillary capillary plexus in IDE, RRMS patients and in matched healthy controls (HCs) through Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A). Clinical history, including history of optic neuritis, Expanded Disability Status scale and disease duration of patients were collected. Results: Thirty patients (20 with IDE and 10 with RRMS) and 15 HCs were enrolled. IDE patients showed a lower VD in radial peripapillary capillary plexus compared with controls (coeff. β = −3.578; p = 0.002). RRMS patients displayed a lower VD in both superficial capillary plexus and radial peripapillary capillary plexus compared with HCs (coeff. β = −4.955; p = 0.002, and coeff. β = −7.446; p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, RRMS patients showed a decreased VD in radial peripapillary capillary plexus compared with IDE patients (coeff. β = −3.868; p = 0.003). Conclusions: Peripapillary region vessel density reduction, revealed through OCT-A, might be considered as an early event in MS, and might be relevant as a biomarker of disease pathology.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report a case of quiescent choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with choroidal nevus using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) during 5 years follow-up. METHODS Observational case report. RESULTS A 53-year old woman was referred our department with diagnosis of choroidal nevus. At 1 year follow-up, fundus autofluorescence revealed hyper/hypoautofluorescent area, infrared image showed hyperreflective area and enhanced depth imaging OCT presented a shallow pigment epithelium detachment without exudation or hemorrhage. Fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography suspected the presence of CNV. Finally, OCTA confirmed a quiescent CNV with an increased flow area of the vascular lesion without any changes in best-corrected visual acuity. At 20 months and 5 years follow-up, the CNV remained quiescent showing no clinical activity on structural SD-OCT and no changes in CNV morphology on OCTA. CONCLUSION This case shows the features of quiescent CNV secondary to choroidal nevus after long-term follow-up. OCTA represents a valid imaging technique that allows to identify the CNV and to monitor its progression over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the presence of retinal vascular network abnormalities in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients and healthy subjects (HS) through optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS OCTA and SD-OCT were performed in aMCI patients and cognitive normal HS. A complete neuropsychological evaluation was performed. Differences in vessel density (VD) in each retinal vascular plexus and in foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were evaluated with linear mixed model after correction for age, sex and disease duration. RESULTS Twenty-seven aMCI patients (10 Single domain aMCI, 17 Multidomain aMCI) and 29 HS were enrolled. aMCI patients showed a statistically significant reduced VD in superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and an increased FAZ compared to controls. When aMCI patients were divided in single domain (SD) and multiple domains (MD) aMCI, SD aMCI showed no VD differences in SCP, DCP and Radial Peripapillary Capillary, while the FAZ area was significantly larger compared to controls. In MD aMCI, VD values were lower and FAZ was increased compared to controls. Comparing both aMCI groups, MD aMCI showed a significant reduction in VD values of SCP. No correlation was found between mini mental state examination (MMSE) scores and OCTA parameters. CONCLUSIONS OCTA is able to detect changes in retinal microvascular network in early cognitive deficits and, the most sensitive alteration seems to be the enlargement of the FAZ. This non-invasive tool provides useful information on retinal involvement patterns in MCI diagnosis and follow up. Vascular network impairment seems to be related to the number of domains affected and not to MMSE.

Abstract
In this prospective study, we investigated the structural and vascular retinal changes at baseline and after Ranibizumab injections at the last follow up to one year in patients affected by Radiation Maculopathy (RM) after plaque brachytheraphy in choroidal melanoma, using Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT Angiography (OCTA). A total of 40 eyes with RM of 40 patients (18 females, 22 males, mean age 51.9 ± 11 years) that underwent ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy were included. All patients received one monthly intravitreal injection of Ranibizumab (Pro Re Nata regimen). We analyzed the Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ) area, the retinal vessel density (VD) of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and of the deep capillary plexus (DCP), using OCTA, and we detected the Central Foveal Thickness (CFT) by SD-OCT at baseline and after treatment. At the last follow up, we found a significant improvement of the CFT (p < 0.001) while OCTA parameters revealed no change in VD of the SCP (p = 0.402), DCP (p = 0.282), and FAZ area (p = 0.255), resulting in a stabilization of the visual acuity (p = 0.210) respect to baseline. The absence of functional improvement, despite the anatomical recovery of the macula, could be due to the absence of improvement in FAZ area and in retinal VD after treatment. OCTA parameters could represent predictive biomarkers to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) intravitreal response and to help to better understand the physiopathological mechanisms of the RM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To perform a quantitative analysis of retinal and choriocapillaris vessel density (VD) in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) after low-fluence verteporfin photodynamic therapy (vPDT), using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). METHODS A total of 28 eyes of 27 patients with CSC (21 females, 6 males, mean age 47 ± 11 years) were included in this retrospective study. At baseline and after 6 months after vPDT, we evaluated VD of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), the deep capillary plexus (DCP) and the choriocapillaris (CC) in different macular areas (whole image, parafovea and fovea). We also analyzed the central foveal thickness (CFT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) with Enhanced Depth Imaging-Optical Coherence Tomography (EDI-OCT). RESULTS Eighteen eyes and ten eyes were responders and non responders to low-fluence vPDT, respectively. The responders group showed a significant increase in VD in DCP and CC after treatment (p < 0.05). In the non responders group the VD in SCP, DCP and CC did not differ before and after treatment. We also found a significant correlation in responders group between Best-Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) and CFT (r = 0.566; p = 0.014) and between BCVA and the increased VD of CC (r= -0.559; p = 0.016). In non responders group, the correlation between OCT, OCTA parameters and BCVA was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS OCTA allowed us to enhance our knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of vascular changes in retinal and CC networks after low-fluence vPDT. OCTA may represent a new biomarker to evaluate the efficacy of low-fluence vPDT in the treatment of CSC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate retinal and choriocapillaris (CC) vessel density in macular region in patients affected by adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AOFVD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) METHODS: A total forty-four right eyes of 44 AOFVD patients (20 females, 24 males, mean age 69.17 ± 11.57 years) divided in 3 stages (vitelliform, pseudohypopyon and vitelliruptive) and 60 normal right eyes of 60 controls (20 females, 40 males, mean age 66.04 ± 6.40 years) were included in this prospective study. We evaluated the vessel density of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP) and CC in different macular areas (whole image, parafovea and fovea). We also analyzed the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) with Enhanced Depth Image (EDI)-OCT. RESULTS The vessel density of SCP and of DCP did not differ between patients and controls in all macular sectors. The vessel density of CC was lower in patients compared to controls but the difference turned out to be statistically significant only in foveal region (p < 0.001). We found that the foveal vessel density of the CC was lower in vitelliform stage and significantly increased in vitelliruptive stage (p = 0.031). At EDI-OCT, the SFCT revealed a statistically significant increase in patients compared to controls (p = 0.002) whereas it was similar in the different stages of this dystrophy (p = 0.276). CONCLUSIONS In vitelliform stage of AOFVD, OCTA and EDI-OCT can be useful to avoid mistakes of evaluation, due to the masking effect artifact. OCTA provides us a better understanding of the vascular role in the physiopathology of the macular diseases.

Abstract
The corneal epithelium represents one of the main structures that undergo degenerative alterations due to antiglaucomatous therapy. Chronic glaucoma therapy containing benzalkonium chloride induces epithelial cellular changes and inflammatory infiltration that in turn causes ocular surface changes resulting in ocular discomfort. Also, age-related changes can involve the tear film stability and the corneal epithelium surface with reduction of microvilli. The objective of this study is to gain insights about the changes in corneal epithelium in glaucomatous patients divided according to age, type and duration of therapy using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). This study evaluated a total of 81 eyes of 42 patients for whom corneal epithelium thickness (CET) was measured in different sectors of the cornea. Our results showed no significant differences in CET among patients divided according to type and duration of treatment, while younger patients showed a thinner CET in comparison with older patients. AS-OCT results demonstrated that the physiological age-related alterations contributed to corneal epithelium changes in patients undergo chronic antiglaucoma therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate choriocapillary vascular density (CVD) in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) complicated by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), at baseline and after intravitreal injections (IVR) of Ranibizumab, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS Twelve eyes of 12 patients were enrolled as group 1 and 12 unaffected fellow eyes formed group 2. Twelve eyes of 12 healthy controls were the control group. RESULTS CVD in Group 1 did not differ before and after treatment. CVD of Group 1 was significantly lower compared with controls at baseline (whole, parafovea and fovea p < 0.05). CVD of controls resulted significantly higher than Group 2 at baseline (whole, parafovea and fovea p < 0.05). There were not significant differences in CVD between Groups 1 and 2 at baseline (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS OCTA revealed a choriocapillary hypoperfusion that may be responsable for the beginning of this disease and the late development of CNV.

Abstract
This study describes the optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography features of three eyes of three patients affected by contractile morning glory syndrome. Optical coherence tomography angiography scans of the peripapillary retina revealed a dense microvascular network without any vascular difference between the superficial vascular plexus and the deep vascular plexus around the optic nerve. These optical coherence tomography angiography findings confirm that the contractile movement could be due to the presence of an autonomic cholinergic muscular mechanism in the posterior part of the globe. In fact in our cases, the contractile movement seemed to be induced by massage of the eyeball. Optical coherence tomography angiography is a valid, non-invasive, dyeless, and reliable method that could shed light on the pathogenesis of this rare disease of the optic disk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fabry disease (FD) is a X-linked recessive lysosomal storage disorder characterized by altered biodegradation of glycosphingolipids. It is a multisystem pathology, also involving ophthalmological systems that show modifications of the vessel wall due to glycosphingolipid deposits. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) allows for an objective analysis of retinal microvasculature alterations, evaluating retinal vessel density in macular region. METHODS A total of 54 FD patients (34 females, 20 males, mean age 44.1 ± 15.6 years) and 70 controls (36 females, 34 males, mean age 42.3 ± 15.6 years) were included in this study. We evaluated vessel density in different macular areas (whole image, fovea, and parafovea) of both the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and of the deep capillary plexus (DCP). RESULTS In the SCP there was a significantly lower vascular density in patients compared with controls in whole image (49.95 ± 5.17% vs. 51.99 ± 2.52%; p < 0.001), parafovea (52.01 ± 6.69% vs. 54.30 ± 2.61%; p = 0.002), and fovea (22.38 ± 9.01% vs. 29.31 ± 5.84%; p < 0.0001). In the DCP the vessel density was statistically increased in each macular area in patients compared with controls (54.82 ± 8.07% vs. 50.93 ± 5.46%; p = 0.005, 57.76 ± 7.26% vs. 53.59 ± 5.46%; p = 0.0001, and 39.75 ± 8.59% vs. 34.43 ± 8.68%; p < 0.0001 for whole image, parafovea, and fovea, respectively). CONCLUSION OCT-A analysis showed that the macular vessel density was significantly reduced in the SCP and increased in the DCP in FD patients compared with controls. These findings, which might be a consequence of the alteration of vascular wall occurring in FD, support the hypothesis that the evaluation of early retinal microvascular network changes could be a useful tool in the clinical evaluation of the disease.

Abstract
Tears are exceptionally rich sources of information on the health status of the eyes, as well as of whole body functionality, due to the presence of a large variety of salts and organic components whose concentration can be altered by pathologies, eye diseases and/or inflammatory processes. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides a unique method for analyzing low concentrations of organic fluids such as tears. In this work, a home-made colloid of gold nanoparticles has been used for preparing glass substrates able to efficiently induce an SERS effect in fluid samples excited by a He–Ne laser (λ = 633 nm). The method has been preliminary tested on Rhodamine 6G aqueous solutions at different concentrations, proving the possibility to sense substance concentrations as low as few μM, i.e., of the order of the main tear organic components. A clear SERS response has been obtained for human tear samples, allowing an interesting insight into tear composition. In particular, aspartic acid and glutamic acid have been shown to be possible markers for two important human tear components, i.e., lactoferrin and lysozyme.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To measure Optic Nerve Subarachnoid Space (ONSAS) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and controls using A-scan ultrasound and to evaluate the measurement of the ONSAS in relation to age patient and OCT parameters. METHODS This retrospective study included 53 consecutive eyes of 27 patients with POAG and 64 normal eyes of 32 controls. Both glaucomatous and control groups were divided into 2 subgroups according to age: <60 age (glaucomatous and control group 1) and 61-90 age (glaucomatous and control group 2). RESULTS The ONSAS was significantly lower in all glaucomatous eyes (3.54 ± 0.38) versus normal eyes (3.87 ± 0.32) (p = 0.001). Significant reduction of ONSAS was showed in control group 2 (3.63 mm ± 0.37) compared to control group 1 (3.87 mm ± 0.32) (p = 0.014) and between glaucoma group 1 (3.54 mm ± 0.38) and control group 1 (p = 0.001). While no significant differences were observed between glaucomatous group 2 (3.48 mm ± 0.41) and control group 2 (p = 0.17) and between glaucoma group 1 and glaucoma group 2 (p = 0.609). Lastly, the ONSAS was not significantly associated with GCC and RNFL parameters except for Focal Loss Volume (FLV), Superior RNFL and ONSAS in glaucoma group 1 and for FLV and ONSAS in all glaucomatous group. CONCLUSION Standardized A-scan ultrasound is a non invasive imaging technique with which it is possible to monitor ONSAS changes in glaucomatous patients. The reduction of ONSAS confirm the importance of the lower orbital CSFP as further risk factor in the progression of glaucoma disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Elements such as zinc, iron, copper, sulphur and phosphorus have been identified in retinal layers and implicated in vital retinal functions. Regarding mineral composition of epiretinal membranes (ERMs), literature is lacking. This study aimed to analyze both mineral composition and anatomical ultrastructure of ERMs to clarify the pathophysiology of this disease. METHODS Twenty ERMs (10 diabetic ERMs and 10 idiopathic ERMs) from 20 patients were harvested during pars plana vitrectomy. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the anatomical ultrastructure of the peeled ERMs. Mineral composition was analyzed using energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The most frequent elements were evaluated in relation to appearance of ERMs analyzed at SEM and at OCT images. RESULTS Sulphur was the most frequent element found (in 80% of the samples), followed by sodium (50%) and phosphorus (45%). The presence of these elements was not significantly different between diabetic and idiopathic ERMs (P >0.05). Using SEM we found a folded tissue in all ERMs, except in 4 ERMs, where we observed only a smooth tissue. There was a trend of sodium to be more frequent in ERMs with folded layers at SEM examination. CONCLUSIONS Several elements were identified in ERMs, and sulphur, sodium and phosphorus were the most frequent ones. This finding may help to understand their role in the physiopatology of epiretinal proliferation and in glial activation.

Abstract
Background/AimsTo analyse choroidal vascular density of affected and non-affected areas in active and inactive serpiginouschoroiditis (SC) by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A).MethodsIn this cross-sectional and observational study, 22 eyes of 11 patients diagnosed with SC were included. All patients underwent blue-light fundus autofluorescence (spectralis Heidelberg retinalangiography+OCT) and swept-source OCT-A (AngioPlex Elite 9000 SS-OCT, Carl Zeiss Meditech) to analyse qualitative features and choroidal vessel density of areas considered affected, and the inner and the outer border of the lesions. Unaffected areas of otherwise healthy retina have also been studied.ResultsAll inactive inflammatory lesions were characterised by atrophy of choriocapillaris with an impairment of its detectable flow and greater visibility of choroidal vessels. On the other hand, all active inflammatory lesions showed an area of complete absence of decorrelation signal. The pathological border was characterised by a statistically significant lower choroidal vessel density compared with both the outer border and the unaffected area (0.650±0.113 vs 0.698±0.112, (p<0.001)). Although not statistically significant, vessel density of the outer border of inactive lesions was lower than vessel density of unaffected areas (0.650±0.113 vs 0.698±0.112, p=0.441). Active inflammatory lesions showed an area of complete absence of decorrelation signal at the level of the choriocapillaris and whole choroid.ConclusionOCT-A represents a new imaging technique that provides useful information about the leading changes of choroidal vascular network in active and inactive lesions of SC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the correlation between the area of morphological changes on the macular surface, the depth of intraretinal changes and the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane. METHODS In this prospective cross-sectional study, 38 patients underwent BCVA testing with a Snellen eye chart. The depth of traction, photoreceptor outer segment layer (PROS) thickness, central macular thickness (CMT) and presence of intraretinal cysts were measured using the Avanti RTVue XR and 3D Widefield Enface OCT instruments. Enface sections were performed at the inner limiting membrane (ILM) line level (ILM offset). Patients were categorized into two groups: in group 1 (n = 21), the depth of traction was within 90 μm from the ILM, and in group 2 (n = 17) it was beyond 90 μm from the ILM. The main outcome measure was the correlation between area of epiretinal traction and BCVA according to the depth of traction. RESULTS In group 1, the depth of traction was 55.15 ± 14.28 μm, the area of traction was 38.95 ± 13.63 mm2, PROS thickness was 51.20 ± 7.23 μm, and CMT was 362.65 ± 41.08 μm. In group 2, the depth of traction was 112.24 ± 10.89 μm, the area of traction was 25.18 ± 4.07 mm2, PROS thickness was 50.24 ± 9.01 μm, and mean CMT was 534.29 ± 126.81 μm. Statistically significant differences in depth of traction, area of traction and CMT were found between the two groups (P < 0.001). The relationship between structure and function between the area of traction and BCVA was better explained in group 2 (r = 0.814, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS We found that intraretinal changes were induced by the ERM, and varied according to the depth of traction measured with en face analysis. In the case of traction deeper than 90 μm, we found a significant correlation between the inner area of the epiretinal traction and BCVA. We believe that retinal stress induced by epiretinal traction is better characterized by combining information provided by sagittal and transverse OCT scans, thus defining its prognostic significance in ERM.
