Abstract
Simple Summary The reproductive performance of ewes in their first breeding season (maiden ewes) can be poorer and more variable than at subsequent breeding seasons. However, the extent and causes of the poorer reproductive performance of maiden ewes on Australian sheep farms are not well understood. We used a survey of Australian sheep farmers to compare the reproductive performance of maiden ewes in their first breeding season to multiparous ewes (ewes that have been bred two or more times) on the same farms. We found that the difference in lamb marking rate between non-Merino ewe lambs and multiparous ewes on the same farm was 58%, and for maiden Merino two-tooth ewes, the difference in marking rate compared to multiparous ewes was 22% lower. Poorer reproduction in maiden ewes was due to a combination of poorer reproductive success to mid-pregnancy (reproductive rate), plus poorer survival of lambs between mid-pregnancy and lamb marking. Reproductive performance for maiden Merino two-tooth ewes was correlated with multiparous ewes on the same farm, whereas the reproductive performance of non-Merino ewe lambs was more variable and not associated with the reproductive performance of their multiparous counterparts. The reproductive efficiency of maiden ewes could be improved by addressing factors that improve the reproductive rate and lamb survival between scanning and lamb marking. Abstract Suboptimal reproductive performance of maiden (primiparous) ewes remains a source of inefficiency for the Australian sheep industry. However, the extent and causes of the poorer reproductive performance of maiden ewes on Australian sheep farms are not well understood. Here, we show the reproductive performance of maiden ewes relative to their multiparous counterparts on the same farms across Australia using a cohort survey. The difference in marking rate for non-Merino maiden ewe lambs compared to multiparous ewes was 58% (74 vs. 132%; p < 0.001), and this was attributable to a 50% difference in reproductive rate (109 vs. 159%; p < 0.001) and 16% difference in lamb survival to marking (67 vs. 83%; p < 0.001). The difference in marking rate for maiden Merino two-tooth ewes lambing at approximately 2 years-of-age compared to mature multiparous ewes was 22% (80 vs. 102%; p < 0.001) and this was attributable to a 24% difference in reproductive rate (108 vs. 132%; p < 0.001) and 3% difference for lamb survival (75 vs. 78%; p < 0.05). Positive correlations for reproduction traits (reproductive rate, lamb survival and marking rate) between maidens and multiparous ewes were observed for maiden Merino two-tooth ewes (p < 0.001), but these correlations were weak or non-existent for non-Merino ewe lambs. Strategies to improve both reproductive rate and lamb survival can address the poorer and more variable reproductive performance of maiden ewes.

Abstract
Industrial control systems increasingly use standard communication protocols and are increasingly connected to public networks-creating substantial cybersecurity risks, especially when used in critical infrastructures such as electricity and water distribution systems. Methods of assessing risk in such systems have recognized for some time the way in which the strategies of potential adversaries and risk managers interact in defining the risk to which such systems are exposed. But it is also important to consider the adaptations of the systems' operators and other legitimate users to risk controls, adaptations that often appear to undermine these controls, or shift the risk from one part of a system to another. Unlike the case with adversarial risk analysis, the adaptations of system users are typically orthogonal to the objective of minimizing or maximizing risk in the system. We argue that this need to analyze potential adaptations to risk controls is true for risk problems more generally, and we develop a framework for incorporating such adaptations into an assessment process. The method is based on the principle of affordances, and we show how this can be incorporated in an iterative procedure based on raising the minimum period of risk materialization above some threshold. We apply the method in a case study of a small European utility provider and discuss the observations arising from this.

Abstract
Neural network computations on RNA sequences are used to demonstrate that data compression is possible in these sequences. The result implies that a certain discrimination should be achievable between structured vs random regions. The technique is illustrated by computing the compressibility of short RNA sequences such as tRNA. The method should be valuable in measuring the information content of DNA, including noncoding DNA, which has been shown to display certain properties resembling natural language attributes.

Abstract
The problem of the partitioning of the degeneracy of the codons in the genetic code is considered in the framework of a generalized information function IG = c sigma kpk(ln pk + G(Ek] where k represents the number of codons in a specific degeneracy class and G(Ek) is an arbitrary real valued function. For G(Ek) = 0 the Shannon information function is recovered. For a particular choice of G(Ek) that takes the dominance of even degeneracies into account, it is found by direct numerical calculations that the correct degeneracy partitioning appears as optimal values of the Ig function. This results is also supported by optimization calculations in which the generalized information function is regarded as a continuous function in the degeneracy variables.

Abstract
In living organisms 20 amino acids along with the terminator value(s) are encoded by 64 codons giving a degeneracy of the codons as described by the genetic code. A basic theoretical problem of genetic codes is to explain the particular distribution of degeneracies of partitions involved in the codes. In this work the degeneracy problem is considered in the framework of information theory. It is shown by direct numerical evaluation of a certain degeneracy information function associated with the genetic code that the degeneracy of the codes is observed to be related to the optimization of this function.

Abstract
This paper describes the hardware and software architecture of a gateway between an Ethernet-style local area network called Strathnet and an X.25 packet switched network (British Telecom's PSS). The hardware is based on a Motorola 68000 processor using the VME bus, and peripheral boards based on an 8-bit 68120/1 processor for the local network and the X.25 interfaces. The software is layered from the low-level executive, through the three X.25 levels and the transport layer, and through the corresponding layers on the local network side, to the bridging software itself. Both hardware and software are designed so that the system can be a general-purpose gateway: for example, the local area network peripheral board could be replaced by a ring type interface, and the software within the local network layers could similarly be replaced.

Abstract
In wounds of the hand and forearm treated within 4 h of injury, prophylactic clindamycin, in a dose of 150 mg 6-hourly for 5 days, did not reduce the infection rate. In wounds treated after 4 h the infection rate was reduced, but not significantly so. There was a significant reduction in the infection rate comparing all wounds treated within 4 h with those treated after 4 h. Early treatment of wounds is more important than prophylactic antibiotics, although these may have a part to play where late treatment is unavoidable.

Abstract
1. Conjunctival specimens from sixteen individuals were stained for γG, γA and γM using the doubly labelled indirect immunofluorescence technique. 2. The immunoglobulins were routinely found in the superficial layer of the substantia propria, gradually decreased in amount into the deeper layers, and were absent from the epithelium.
