Abstract
Biomarkers are measured to evaluate physiological and pathological processes as well as responses to a therapeutic intervention. Biomarkers can be classified as diagnostic, prognostic, predictor, clinical, and therapeutic. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), multiple biomarkers have been reported so far. Nevertheless, finding a specific biomarker in AD remains a major challenge. Three databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were selected with the keywords of Alzheimer's disease, neuroimaging, biomarker, and blood. The results were finalized with 49 potential CSF/blood and 35 neuroimaging biomarkers. To distinguish normal from AD patients, amyloid-beta42 (Aβ42), plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NFL) as potential biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as well as the serum could be detected. Nevertheless, most of the biomarkers fairly change in the CSF during AD, listed as kallikrein 6, virus-like particles (VLP-1), galectin-3 (Gal-3), and synaptotagmin-1 (Syt-1). From the neuroimaging aspect, atrophy is an accepted biomarker for the neuropathologic progression of AD. In addition, Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), tractography (DTT), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), can be used to detect AD. Using neuroimaging and CSF/blood biomarkers, in combination with artificial intelligence, it is possible to obtain information on prognosis and follow-up on the different stages of AD. Hence physicians could select the suitable therapy to attenuate disease symptoms and follow up on the efficiency of the prescribed drug.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal motor neuron disease. Due to the limited knowledge about potential biomarkers that help in early diagnosis and monitoring disease progression, today's diagnoses are based on ruling out other diseases, neurography, and electromyography examination, which takes a time-consuming procedure. METHODS PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were explored to extract articles published from January 2015 to June 2023. In the searching strategy following keywords were included; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, biomarkers, cerebrospinal fluid, serum, and plama. RESULTS A total number of 6 studies describing fluid-based exosomal biomarkers were included in this study. Aggregated proteins including SOD1, TDP-43, pTDP-43, and FUS could be detected in the microvesicles (MVs). Moreover, TDP-43 and NFL extracted from plasma exosomes could be used as prognostic biomarkers. Also, downregulated miR-27a-3p detected through exoEasy Maxi and exoQuick Kit in the plasma could be measured as a diagnostic biomarker. Eventually, the upregulated level of CORO1A could be used to monitor disease progression. CONCLUSION Based on the results, each biomarker alone is insufficient to evaluate ALS. CNS-derived exosomes contain multiple ALS-related biomarkers (SOD1, TDP-43, pTDP-43, FUS, and miRNAs) that are detectable in cerebrospinal fluid and blood is a proper alternation. Exosome detecting kits listed as exoEasy, ExoQuick, Exo-spin, ME kit, ExoQuick Plus, and Exo-Flow, are helpful to reach this purpose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Crack heroin is a novel opiate derivative with highly addictive properties and unfamiliar health consequences. It causes a variety of brain dysfunctions that are mediated by neurochemical alterations and abnormal neuroplasticity. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a widely recognized biological marker implicated in the neuropathology of substance use during substance use disorder and withdrawal. Its involvement can significantly contribute to the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate BDNF levels in crack heroin users before and after withdrawal. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 148 male participants were recruited and divided into two groups: persons with crack heroin use disorder (n = 74) and the controls (n = 74). The BDNF serum levels were measured in both crack heroin users and control groups upon hospitalization and again after twenty-one days of withdrawal using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The results demonstrated that BDNF levels in persons with crack heroin use disorder upon admission were significantly lower than the levels observed upon discharge and in the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, a significant difference in BDNF levels was found between persons with crack heroin use disorder at admission and discharge (p = 0.038). Furthermore, BDNF levels showed an inverse correlation with the daily dose of substance use (r= -0.420, p = 0.03) and the duration of crack heroin use (r= -0.235, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A progressive increment in BDNF levels during early detoxification is associated with the daily amount of substance use and the duration of substance use. Our findings suggest that changes in BDNF serum levels during crack heroin use disorder and withdrawal could serve as potential biomarkers for assessing the intensity of withdrawal symptoms and substance use-related behaviors.

Abstract
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most vascular among solid tumors, and despite the use of multimodal therapies, the survival of these patients is poor. In order to target angiogenesis in GBM as a promising strategy, an antiangiogenic drug is required. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of sunitinib, a multityrosine kinase inhibitor with tumor proliferation and angiogenesis inhibitory properties, on GBM-bearing rats. Given the ineffective drug delivery to the brain due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), intra-nasal (IN) drug delivery has recently been considered as a non-invasive method to bypass BBB. Therefore, in the current study, IN was used as an ideal method for the delivery of sunitinib to the brain, and the effects of this method were also compared to the OR administration of the sunitinib. GBM was induced in the brain of male Wistar rats, and they were randomly divided into 4 groups; IN-STB (sunitinib intranasal delivery), IN-sham (placebo intranasal delivery), OR-STB (sunitinib oral delivery) and OR-sham (placebo oral delivery). After the end of the treatment period, an MRI of animals' brains showed a reduction in tumor growth in the treatment groups. Immunohistochemistry revealed that sunitinib inhibits angiogenesis in GBM in both OR and IN delivery methods. Analysis of liver tissue and enzymes showed that IN delivery of sunitinib had less hepatotoxicity than the OR method. Overall, it was found that IN sunitinib delivery could be used as a potential non-hepatotoxic alternative for the treatment of GBM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Schizophrenia is a severe psychotic brain disorder. One of the potential mechanisms underlying this disease may be volumetric changes in some brain regions. The present study aimed to employ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to estimate and quantitatively analyze the brain of patients with schizophrenia compared to the controls. METHODS This case-control study was conducted on MRI scans of 20 patients with schizophrenia and 20 healthy controls in Zahedan City, Southeastern Iran. MRIs with 4 mm slice thickness and 5 mm intervals in coronal and sagittal planes were captured. Then, quantitative parameters, including volume and volume density of various brain regions, were estimated in both groups using Cavalieri's point counting method. Data analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS The findings of this investigation revealed that volumes of gray matter, hippocampus, and gray/white matter in patients with schizophrenia were significantly lower than the controls (P<0.05). The volumes of lateral ventricles in patients with schizophrenia (36.60±4.32 mm3) were significantly higher than the healthy individuals (30.10±7.98 mm3). However, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the changes in the brain's total volume, cerebral hemispheres, white matter, brain stem, cerebellum, and corpus callosum (P>0.05). CONCLUSION Volumetric estimations on brain MRI-based stereological technique can be helpful for elucidation of structural changes, following up the treatment trends, and evaluating the therapeutic situations in schizophrenia patients. Volumetric alternations in specific brain areas might be linked to cognitive impairments and the severity of symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Further research is needed in this regard. HIGHLIGHTS Volumetric changes occur in certain regions of the brain of schizophrenia patients.Structural changes in the brain of schizophrenia patients are associated with the severity of clinical manifestations.A brain MRI-based stereological technique can clarify neuropathology and assess therapeutic efficiency in patients with schizophrenia. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with worldwide prevalence that disrupts a person's social life. It's characterized by progressive neuroanatomical alterations in both gray and white matter in different brain regions and associated with changes in the structural and functioning of some critical brain circuits. Several factors have been suggested to be involved in the development and progression of the disease including alternations and disconnection in myelin, genetic factors, neurodegenerative process, neuroinflammation, neurodevelopmental deficiencies, the number of dopaminergic neurons and volumetric changes in different areas of the brain. It has shown that quantitative volumetric brain measurements on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in patients with neurodegenerative disease owing to selective regional atrophy are beneficial for clinicians to ascertain disease progression and to evaluate volume alternations and response to treatment. Thus, we investigated structural changes of the brain in schizophrenia patients on MR images using accurate Cavalieri's estimation and compared to healthy controls. The findings demonstrated that some structural changes occurs in various brain areas which involved in many critical roles in normal brain's functionality and connectivity. On the other hand, these changes are associated with cognitive impairments and the severity of clinical symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. It's appears that elucidation of the different pathways of various structural abnormalities related to schizophrenia is required to recognize and determine the role of discrete pathophysiological phenomena in mental illness development and progress.

Abstract
Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is known to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, consequences of oxidative stress (OS), and neuronal death in the susceptible brain areas including the cerebellum. Newly, remarkable attention has been paid to a natural diet with the capability to scavenge ROS. Withania coagulans root extract (WCE) is rich in components with antioxidants properties. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of WCE on cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs) against OS-mediated apoptosis after I/R injury. In this experimental study 64 male adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 16) as follows: control, sham, I/R, and WCE 1000 + I/R. I/R animals were pretreated with daily administration of hydro-alcoholic WCE (1000 mg/kg) or distilled water as a vehicle for 30 days before I/R injury. After 72 h, the animals were sacrificed, the cerebellum tissue was removed and used for biochemical (CAT, SOD, GPx, and MDA levels) and histopathological (Nissl and TUNEL staining) assays. Findings showed that the MDA level and the number of apoptotic neurons significantly increased and viable Purkinje neurons decreased in I/R injury (p < 0.05). Administration of 1000 mg/kg WCE reduced MDA level and enhanced antioxidants activity including CAT, SOD, and GPx significantly. In addition, intact surviving PCs increased. At the same time, TUNEL-positive neurons decreased significantly in the WCE pre-treated group (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that WCE can counteract cerebral I/R-induced OS and associated neuronal death by enhancement of ROS scavenging and antioxidant capacity. It appears that pre-treatment with 1000 mg/kg WCE for thirty days can protect PCs against OS-mediated apoptosis after I/R injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is an inevitable physiological process, associated with a decline in cognitive function. Recently, metformin, as the first-line treatment for type II diabetes, has been shown to increase the life expectancy of diabetic patients. Therefore, researchers are paying increasing attention to its anti-aging properties. Oxygen free radicals are responsible for oxidative stress, which is a prominent factor in age-associated diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term administration of metformin on age-dependent oxidative stress and cognitive function. METHODS In this experimental study, 32 normal (nondiabetic) male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into control and metformin groups (n = 16 per group). The metformin group received 100 mg/kg of metformin in drinking water daily for six months. The shuttle box test was used for the passive avoidance task in 24-month-old rats. For the biochemical assay, the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) level were measured. Nissl and TUNEL staining were also used for histopathological assessments. Data were analyzed using independent t-test. RESULTS The present findings revealed that metformin significantly reduced the MDA level and increased the TAC in the hippocampus of the metformin group (p < 0.05). The survival of hippocampal CA1 neurons was significantly higher in the metformin group as compared to the control group, while the number of TUNEL-positive neurons decreased significantly (p < 0.05). On the other hand, metformin markedly improved the passive avoidance memory in the metformin group as compared to the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that long-term metformin intake, by modulating the oxidant/antioxidant mechanisms, prevents the loss of hippocampal neurons caused by age-dependent oxidative stress and improves memory.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related disease in which dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway are destroyed, resulting in movement and behavioral problems. Oxidative stress and the generation of reactive oxygen species play key roles in neurodegenerative diseases, such as PD. Rotenone (ROT) is a common pesticide that induces oxidative stress. Olive leaves extract (OLE) has antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of OLE on ROT-induced oxidative stress in the midbrain of a rat model of PD. Ninety-six Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following 6 groups (n = 16 rats/group): Control, Sham, ROT, and 3 ROT + OLE (75, 150, and 300 mg/kg/daily) groups. ROT (2.5 mg/kg/48 h) was injected subcutaneously, and vehicle or OLE was orally administered for 30 days. The animals were then sacrificed, and their brains were removed. Biochemical measures, including the levels of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neurons were determined, and behavioral (rotarod and hanging) tests were conducted. The balance and muscle strength of the OLE (150 and 300 mg/kg)-treated groups were significantly improved. Treatment with OLE prevented the increases in the levels of MDA, significantly improved the SOD, CAT, and GPx levels in the midbrain, and prevented the depletion of the TH-positive neurons. These findings suggested that OLE has neuroprotective properties and that it might be useful for preventing the death of dopaminergic neurons in patients with PD.

Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common neoplasms with high mortality at advanced
stages worldwide. Thus diagnosis of CRC at an early stage with sensitive molecular methods is a high priority. The
aim of this study was to evaluate P16ink4a subcellular expression patterns in colorectal adenocarcinoma, adenoma and
non-neoplastic tissue samples. Methods: A total of 137 colorectal formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks
from the pathology archives of Ali-Ebne-Abitaleb central hospital, Zahedan, Iran, were examined in three groups:
adenocarcinoma (n= 63), adenoma (n= 38) and non-neoplastic (n= 36). The subcellular expression pattern was
determined by immunocytochemistry. Data analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Fisher exact tests with
the significance level set as p˂0.05. Results: P16ink4a subcellular localization was observed in three different patterns,
nuclear+cytoplasmic (73.33%), cytoplasmic (13.33%) and nuclear (13.33%). In most samples, nuclear+cytoplasmic
was the predominant subcellular pattern. However, a significant difference in P16ink4a subcellular expression patterns
was observed along the non-neoplastic, adenoma, adenocarcinoma sequence (p˂0.001). An association with the
histological tumor type was also noted (p=0.021). Conclusion: Considering variation in localization of P16ink4a under
different pathological conditions, P16ink4a night be sensitive prognostic biomarker for benign colon lesions. Its use may
improve strategies for screening, prognostic assessment and management of patients with CRC. Further studies are
recommended in this field.

Abstract
Abstract
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder. A tetrad of bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor and postural instability are the core features of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate stereological changes in the brain of patients with PD and compare them with that of healthy controls. This case-control study was conducted on 29 patients with PD and 12 controls (C) in Zahedan, Iran. All subjects enrolled into the study through the convenience sampling method. MRI images of the brains of two groups in frontal and sagittal axis with consecutive 5mm distance slices were captured. Parameters including total volume (V) and volume density (Vv) of different parts of the brain were estimated based on Cavalries’ point counting stereological method. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U-Test applied for comparing the PD and C groups were used. Significance level was set at p<0.05. Our study showed that the volume of the brain and total volume and volume density (Vv) of cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, ventricles, hippocampus, pons, mid brain and superior cerebellar peduncles in the PD group did not indicate significant difference from the control group. Total volume of brain stem in PD group wasn’t significantly different from the control group. The volume density of brain stem (p= 0.012) and total volume and volume density of middle cerebellar peduncle (p< 0.0001) in PD group were significantly larger than the control group. This study shows that PD stereological parameters related to volume and volume density of middle cerebellar peduncle and volume density of brain stem were significantly larger in patients compared to the controls. Therefore, stereological parameters can be used for early diagnosis and probably for follow-up in patients with PD.

Abstract
Introduction and Aim: Medication errors as a serious problem in world and one of the most common medical errors that threaten patient safety and may lead to even death of them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of medication errors and strategies to prevention of them from nurses and nursing student viewpoint. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 327 nursing staff of khatam-al-anbia hospital and 62 intern nursing students in nursing and midwifery school of Zahedan, Iran, enrolled through the availability sampling in 2015. The data were collected by the valid and reliable questionnaire. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics, T-test and ANOVA were applied by use of SPSS16 software. Findings: The results showed that the most common causes of medications errors in nursing were tiredness due increased workload (97.8%), and in nursing students were drug calculation, (77.4%). The most important way for prevention in nurses and nursing student opinion, was reducing the work pressure by increasing the personnel, proportional to the number and condition of patients and also creating a unit as medication calculation. Also there was a significant relationship between the type of ward and the mean of medication errors in two groups. Conclusion: Based on the results it is recommended that nurse-managers resolve the human resources problem, provide workshops and in-service education about preparing medications, side-effects of drugs and pharmacological knowledge. Using electronic medications cards is a measure which reduces medications errors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION & AIM: Identification of effective factors on job satisfaction can impact the efficiency and quality of health services and personal life. The Aim of this study was to investigate, Job Satisfaction and External Effective Factors in Operating Room Nurses Educational Hospitals of Zahedan in 2015.MATERIALS & METHODS: This descriptive–analytical study was conducted on 137 operating room Nurses of Ali-Ebne-Abitaleb, Khatam-Al-Anbia and Alzahra hospital in Zahedan, Iran, enrolled through the convenience sampling in 2015. The data were collected by the valid and reliable job satisfaction standard questionnaire or Herzberg's Dual-Factor theory. To analyze the information, descriptive statistics, Chi-square & Pearson correlation test were applied by use of SPSS v. 21 software.FINDINGS: The results found that the most effective factors of job satisfaction were job safety with an average 4/78, work qualification with an average 4/32 and suitable salary with an average 3/91 respectively. Only 45.98% of the nurses experienced moderate job satisfaction, and only 25.54% of them had high job satisfaction. Moreover, job satisfaction was significantly related to the type of employment (p=0. 019), work background (p=0. 029) and turn of work (p=0. 034).CONCLUSION: The data of this study found that, notice and planning in preparing job safety, work qualification and proper salary may play a more effective role in improving employees’ performance than any other factors.

Abstract
<p><strong>INTRODUCTION & AIM:</strong> Emotional intelligence is one of the most important leading factors influencing different aspects of human life. It leads individuals to percept their feelings for appropriate decision making and fields for future accomplishments. The aim of this study was to Investigation of the associations of self-assessed EI with academic achievement and general health among medical students.</p><p><strong>MATERIALS & METHODS:</strong> This cross-sectional study was conducted on 426 students of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences from October 2014 to May 2015. Random sampling method was used. Sibria Shring standard emotional intelligence questionnaire and Goldberg's standard general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) were used for data collecting. Data analysis was through descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient) by SPSS v.21. The tests significant level was considered 0.05.</p><p><strong>FINDINGS:</strong> The average total score of emotional intelligence in males (102.23±1.67) was better in comparison with females (98.54±2.23). There was not any significant difference in total mean scores of students of different fields of Study (P=0.211). According to ANOVA test, it has not observed any significant difference between scores of emotional intelligence scales of students from different domains of study. The results of Pearson correlation test confirmed a positive significant correlation between emotional intelligence, academic achievement and general health.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> According to the results of this study that has shown a significant relationship between emotional intelligence, general health and academic achievement, it is needed to hold some workshops and classes for emotional intelligence improvement. </p>
