Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to identify the two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses and evaluate the loss of tooth structure in the tooth's different constituent elements and the ceramic antagonist's surface. METHODS In this study, three groups (n = 10) represented by different ceramic systems (lithium disilicate [GDis], lithium silicate reinforced with zirconia [GSil], and monolithic zirconia [GZir]) were evaluated. Each group obtained ten ceramic blocks and submitted them to the sintering/crystallization process. To carry out the wear test, healthy mandibular premolars were used as the specimens and the ceramic blocks as antagonists. The premolars were submitted to two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses using a computerized microtomography (µTC) before and after the wear test. The wear test was performed with 30 N and 300,000 cycles load, with occlusion, laterality, and disocclusion movements. RESULTS The statistical analysis comparing the loss of two-dimensional tooth structure showed a statistically significant difference among all groups (p < 0.05). Statistical analysis comparing the percentage of loss of three-dimensional tooth structure showed a statistically significant difference between groups GDis and GSil and between groups GDis and GZir. However, when comparing GSil with GZir, no statistically significant difference was found. The qualitative analysis of the teeth showed that GDis showed considerable enamel loss and dentin exposure, GSil showed enamel wear with flattening the cusp without dentin exposure, and GZir showed minimal enamel wear without dentin exposure. In the qualitative analysis of ceramic antagonists, more significant wear of the ceramic material for GDis was observed, followed by the GSil and GZir groups, respectively. SIGNIFICANCE The use of the lithium disilicate should be cautious, restricting it to areas with lower masticatory forces. Areas of higher masticatory forces showed a large amount of antagonist wear, with dentin involvement. This can lead to dentinal hypersensitivity, risk of compromising patients' occlusion, by harming group disocclusion guides, causing pain and temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dimensional stability of prototyped surgical guides after autoclave and 2% glutaraldehyde sterilization processes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty prototyped surgical guides were prepared and submitted to two sterilization processes (n = 10): Physics - sterilization by autoclave (saturated water vapor under pressure, temperature of 126 to 130 °C, pressure of 1,7 at 1.9 kgf/cm2, 16 min); Chemistry - sterilization by 2% glutaraldehyde for 10 h. Six pre-established points were measured in the prototyped surgical guides, before and after sterilization, using a digital caliper rule. The comparisons were made using orthogonal contrasts using the linear model of mixed effects (random and fixed). RESULTS there are no significant differences between autoclave and glutaraldehyde 2% (p>0.05) there are significant differences after autoclave sterilization (p<0.05) and there are not significant differences after 2% glutaraldehyde sterilization (p>0.05). CONCLUSION autoclave promoted dimensional alteration of the prototyped surgical guides, and the chemical sterilization by glutaraldehyde 2% did not cause dimensional alteration of the prototype surgical guides, being a favorable choice for sterilization. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE the sterilization of surgical guides can be performed through the chemical process with 2% glutaraldehyde without changing the linear precision of the prototype surgical guides.

Abstract
Organo-mineral fertilizers supplemented with biological additives are an alternative to chemical fertilizers. In this study, thermoresistant microorganisms from composting mass were isolated by two-step procedures. First, samples taken at different time points and temperatures (33 days at 52 ºC, 60 days at 63 ºC, and over 365 days at 26 ºC) were pre-incubated at 80 oC for 30 minutes. Second, the microbial selection by in vitro culture-based methods and heat shock at 60 oC and 100 oC for 2h and 4h. Forty-one isolates were able to grow at 60 °C for 4h; twenty-seven at 100 °C for 2h, and two at 100 °C for 4h. The molecular identification by partial sequencing of the 16S ribosomal gene using universal primers revealed that thirty-five isolates were from eight Bacillus species, one Brevibacillus borstelensis, three Streptomyces thermogriseus, and two fungi (Thermomyces lanuginosus and T. dupontii). Data from amylase, phytase, and cellulase activity assays and the enzymatic index (EI) showed that 38 of 41 thermo-resistant isolates produce at least one enzyme. For amylase activity, the highest EI value was observed in Bacillus licheniformis (isolate 21C2, EI= 4.11), followed by Brevibacillus borstelensis (isolate 6C2, EI= 3.66), Bacillus cereus (isolate 18C2, EI= 3.52), and Bacillus paralicheniformis (isolate 20C2, EI= 3.34). For phytase, the highest EI values were observed for Bacillus cereus (isolate 18C2, EI= 2.30) and Bacillus licheniformis (isolate 3C1, EI= 2.15). Concerning cellulose production, B. altitudinis (isolate 6C1) was the most efficient (EI= 6.40), followed by three Bacillus subtilis (isolates 9C1, 16C2, and 19C2) with EI values of 5.66, 5.84, and 5.88, respectively, and one B. pumilus (isolate 27C2, EI= 5.78). The selected microorganisms are potentially useful as a biological additive in organo-mineral fertilizers and other biotechnological processes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of conservative endodontic cavities (CECs) on root canal preparation, restoration, and biomechanical behavior of teeth prepared using different shaping systems and restorative materials. METHODS Ninety upper premolars with a bifurcated root were matched based on morphology and randomly assigned to a control group (n = 10) or 1 of the following experimental groups (n = 40): traditional endodontic cavity and CEC. Teeth were subdivided according to instrumentation (n = 10) as follows: ProTaper Universal (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), Reciproc (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany), Reciproc Blue (VDW GmbH), and Hyflex EDM (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland). After canal obturation, teeth were restored using temporary material, conventional composite, regular bulk fill composite, or bulk fill flow combined with conventional composite. Before and after preparation and after obturation, the teeth were scanned using micro-computed tomographic imaging. Canal transportation (CT), the percentage of untouched canal surfaces (UCSs), voids in restoration (VRs), and residual filling material in the pulp chamber were evaluated. Finite element analysis, fracture resistance, and the failure pattern were recorded. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Tukey and chi-square tests. RESULTS CECs had greater CT, percentage of filling material, and VRs compared with traditional endodontic cavities (P < .0001). The highest CT and UCSs were observed in CEC with ProTaper Universal. Bulk fill flow combined with conventional composite showed a lower percentage of VRs compared with other restorative materials (P < .05). Finite element analysis, fracture resistance, and failure pattern revealed similar behaviors in all groups (P > .05) . CONCLUSIONS CECs had a negative impact on root canal centralization, UCSs, cleaning of the pulp chamber, and percentage of VRs. Controlled memory instruments were the most adequate for the root canal preparation of CECs. The endodontic cavity did not influence the biomechanical behavior of restored teeth.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of endocrown and ferrule restorative treatment on the mechanical behavior of anterior endodontically treated teeth. Human canines were treated endodontically and distributed in five groups (n = 10): sound teeth (S), crown associated with glass fiber post (GFP) and ferrule (GFPf+) and that without ferrule (GFPf-), and endocrown with ferrule (Ef+) and that without ferrule (Ef-). The crowns were obtained in lithium disilicate-based glass ceramic and cemented with resin. Thermomechanical loading (TL) was performed with progressive load of 80, 120, 160, 200, 240, 280, and 320 N with 20,000 cycles each, 140,000 cycles in total, frequency of 5 Hz, and temperature variation of 5°C-55 °C, followed by fracture resistance testing with load cell of 1000 Kgf and crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min in a universal testing machine. Failure mode has been evaluated. Data were compared by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (p < 0.05) for TL and one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05) for fracture resistance. TL showed higher number of fractures for groups without ferrule (GFPf- = 7, GFPf+ = 3, Ef- = 10, and Ef+ = 2) and lower mean fracture load probability (GFPf+ = 300 N, GFPf- = 280 N, Ef+ = 320 N, Ef- = 188 N) than those with ferrule. Regarding fracture, teeth rehabilitated with GFP were more resistant to endocrowns with ferrule (p < 0.05). A higher percentage of type III failures after fatigue and type II failures after fracture were found. In conclusion, rehabilitation using GFP with ferrule is more favorable for anterior teeth, but the use of endocrown with ferrule proved feasible.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The mechanical behavior of ceramic endocrowns is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro and 3-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of endodontically treated teeth restored with ceramic endocrowns made by using different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty mandibular human molars were endodontically treated, prepared for endocrowns, and divided into 4 groups (n=15) according to the following various ceramic systems: leucite-based glass-ceramic (LC group), lithium disilicate-based glass-ceramic (LD group), glass-ceramic based on zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (LSZ group), and monolithic zirconia (ZR group). After adhesive bonding, the specimens were subjected to thermomechanical loading and then to fracture resistance testing in a universal testing machine. The failure mode of the specimens was qualitatively evaluated. Three-dimensional FEA was performed to evaluate the stress distribution in each group. Data were analyzed by using a 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). RESULTS Statistically significant differences among the groups were observed (P<.05). The outcomes of the LC, LD, and LSZ groups were similar (1178 N, 1935 N, and 1859 N) but different from those of the ZR group (6333 N). The LC and LD groups had a higher ratio of restorable failures, while LSZ and ZR had more nonrestorable failures. Fractographic analysis indicated a regular failure pattern in the ZR group and irregular failure patterns in the other groups. Three-dimensional FEA revealed similar values and stress pattern distributions among the groups. CONCLUSIONS The mechanical performance of monolithic zirconia was better than that of the other ceramic endocrowns considered in this research; however, monolithic zirconia presented a higher rate of catastrophic tooth structure failure.

Abstract
Aim: This study evaluated the mechanical behavior of implant-supported crowns obtained by different fabrication technique after thermomechanical cycling. Methods: Thirty-two external hexagon dental implants were divided into four groups (n=10): CC – conventional casting with torch; EI – electromagnetic induction casting; PL – plasma casting; and CAD-CAM – milling through computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. Vickers microhardness of the specimens were made before and after the thermomechanical cycling, and then subjected to fracture load. Fracture pattern was evaluated. Results: No significant difference was observed comparing the microhardness before and after thermomechanical cycling. CAD-CAM group presented significant lower microhardness than the other groups. No significant statistical difference was showed on fracture load between the groups. The CAD-CAM and PL presented lower number of failure by plastic deformation. Conclusion: The manufacturing techniques affected the mechanical behavior and the failure pattern of implant-supported crowns tested.

Abstract
Abstract Two clinical cases are presented to explore technical differences and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using veneered or monolithic zirconia to manufacture posterior single crowns. The first case describes the clinical steps in manufacturing a monolithic crown on a mandibular left second premolar using high translucency zirconia. It shows the use of a conservative tooth preparation based on the superior mechanical properties that this material presents as well as the final optical characteristics achieved by shading and staining. In the second case, a conventional bilayer restorative treatment was made using zirconia framework followed by veneering with feldspar ceramic on a mandibular left first molar. Recent literature indicates that each of these restorative alternatives presents specific advantages and disadvantages. Factors such as mechanical performance, fracture, esthetic characteristics, clinical success, complication rates, adhesion and antagonist wear performance are discussed comparing the two restorative assemblies. The data highlight that monolithic crowns prevent a major problem reported on bilayer restorations: the chipping of veneering ceramic. Monolithic crowns also allow minimally invasive tooth preparations, thus increasing tooth remnant preservation. However, data that support esthetic performance similarity between monolithic and bilayer assemblies are lacking, thus the predictability of use is restricted for the posterior region, as cases demanding high esthetic appeal continue to fundamentally use bilayer restorations. Failures were not found, and patient satisfaction was reported in both techniques after the 12-month follow up.

Abstract
Este caso clínico descreve a restauração de um dente tratado endodonticamente com uma endocoroa em cerâmica de dissilicato de lítio fabricada pelo sistema CAD/CAM. O caso é de uma paciente do sexo feminino, 48 anos, que apresentava fratura coronária de um dente tratado endodonticamente. Uma restauração com endocoroa em dissilicato de lítio fabricada pelo sistema CAD/CAM foi indicada. As coroas foram avaliadas usando um sistema de avaliação de qualidade da Associação Dental da Califórnia e exame de acompanhamento. Uma endocoroa cerâmica em dissilicato fabricada por CAD/CAM foi uma alternativa de tratamento restaurador confiável para um pré-molar tratado endodonticamente. O preparo minimamente invasivo para endocoroa que preserva o máximo de estrutura dentária é considerado padrão ouro para restaurações dentárias. Ainda, tal alternativa restauradora é mais conservadora em comparação à coroa total com retentor intrarradicular e apresenta apropriado desempenho mecânico e longevidade com um menor custo e rapidez no preparo.

Abstract
This study evaluated the stress distribution in endodontically treated teeth, weakened (W) or not weakened (NW), restored with different materials of prosthetic crown using 3D-FEA. Models of a maxillary canine were constructed based on micro-CT images and divided into the groups: G1 (control) - sound tooth; G2 to G7 - endodontically treated teeth restored with glass fiber post (GFP); which G2 to G4 simulated NW root and G5 to G7 simulated W root. For crown material the teeth were restored with: G2 and G5: metallic coping and ceramic veneering, G3 and G6: zirconia coping and ceramic veneering, G4 and G7: alumina coping and ceramic veneering. Load of 180 N was applied at the incisal third of lingual surface at 45º. Models were supported by the periodontal ligament (x=y=z=0). The von Mises stress (VMS) values were calculated. The W teeth presented higher VMS at coping when compared to NW teeth and group G1 showed lower VMS value. For crown material, for both W or NW teeth, increasing VMS was found at metallic, zirconia and alumina coping, respectively. Metallic coping showed a better performance despite its unfavorable esthetics, suggesting as an appropriate material for prosthetic restoration of endodontically treated teeth.

Abstract
Abstract This study evaluated the fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth submitted to reconstructive techniques through dynamic and static tests. Forty human anterior teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=10): GNW (non-weakened) - root restored with glass fiber post (GFP), GW - weakened root restored with GFP, GDA - weakened root restored with direct anatomic GFP, and GIA - weakened root restored with indirect anatomic GFP. The teeth were endodontically treated considering that experimental groups (GW, GDA and GIA) simulated weakened roots for restoration with GFP using different techniques. The GFP was luted with resin cement and the coronal portion was restored with composite resin and metallic crowns. All samples were submitted to chewing simulation at 60 cycles/min in a total of 300,000 cycles. The survival samples were further exposed to compressive loading at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min in a universal testing machine. The load was applied at 135° to the long axis of the tooth until failure. Data were analyzed by ANOVA (a=0.05). After chewing simulation were observed: GNW: 100% of survival roots; GW: 70% of survival roots, and GDA and GIA: 80% of survival roots. The mean fracture strength values (N) were 280.6 (GNW), 239.0 (GW), 221.3 (GDA), and 234.1 (GIA) without significant difference among the groups (p=0.7476). The results suggested similar fracture strength in both weakened and non-weakened teeth regardless the reconstructive technique of root internal wall. Higher incidence of catastrophic fracture was observed in weakened teeth without restoration of the root internal wall.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of laser irradiation on flexural strength, elastic modulus, and surface roughness and morphology of glass fiber posts (GFPs). BACKGROUND DATA Laser treatment of GFPs has been introduced to improve its adhesion properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 GFPs were divided into 4 groups according to the irradiation protocol: GC-no irradiation, GYAG-irradiation with erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet [Er:YAG], GCR-irradiation with erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG), and GDI-irradiation with diode laser. The GFP roughness and morphology were evaluated through laser confocal microscopy before and after surface treatment. Three-point bending flexural test measured flexural strength and elastic modulus. Data about elastic modulus and flexural strength were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (p < 0.05). The effect of roughness was evaluated using the linear mixed effects model and Bonferroni test (p < 0.05). RESULTS Laser treatment changed surface roughness in the groups GCR (p = 0.000) and GDI (p = 0.007). The mean flexural strength in GYAG (995.22 MPa) was similar to that in GC (980.48 MPa) (p = 1.000) but different from that in GCR (746.83 MPa) and that in GDI (691.34 MPa) (p = 0.000). No difference was found between the groups GCR and GDI (p = 0.86). For elastic modulus: GYAG (24.47 GPa) was similar to GC (25.92 GPa) (p = 1.000) but different from GCR (19.88 GPa) (p = 0.002) and GDI (17.20 GPa) (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS The different types of lasers, especially Er,Cr:YSGG and 980 ηm diode, influenced the mechanical properties of GFPs.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the reliability of FEA on the results of different mechanical properties (E and v) of materials. Two 3D models of a maxillary canine with endodontic treatment, intracanal post, composite resin core and restored with porcelain-fused-to-metal crown were generated according to micro-CT images. Two groups with different E and ν values for porcelain, metal coping alloy, resin cement and composite resin were established. The materials' properties for group GL were based on literature data, while for group GIE the impulse excitation technique was used. A load of 180 N was applied at 45° on the incisal third of the lingual surface of the canine tooth. All models were supported by the periodontal ligament (x=y=z=0). The von Mises stress (VMS) was calculated. The stress values revealed differences between the groups for both VMS distribution and value. The porcelain (GL: 5.966 MPa; GIE: 7.478 MPa), metal coping (GL: 3.811 MPa; GIE: 0.973 MPa) and core (GL: 4.771 MPa; GIE: 0.026 MPa) were significantly affected. In conclusion, this study showed that the determination of mechanical properties (E and ν) of materials is essential for the reliability on the results of FEA.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different surface conditioning methods on the microtensile bond strength of a restorative composite repair in three types of dental ceramics: lithium disilicate-reinforced, leucite-reinforced and feldspathic. Twelve blocks were sintered for each type of ceramic (n=3) and stored for 3 months in distilled water at 37 °C. The bonding surface of ceramics was abraded with 600-grit SiC paper. Surface treatments for each ceramic were: GC (control) - none; GDB - diamond bur #30 µm; GHF - hydrofluoric acid (10%); GT- tribochemical silica coating (45-μm size particles). Treatments were followed by cleaning with phosphoric acid 37% for 20 s + silane + adhesive. The composite resin was used as restorative material. After repair, samples were subjected to thermocycled ageing (10,000 cycles between 5 °C and 55 °C for 30 s). Thereafter, the samples were sectioned into 1.0 mm2 sticks and tested for microtensile bond strength with 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were compared by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The superficial wear with diamond bur proved to be suitable for feldspathic porcelain and for leucite-reinforced glass ceramic while hydrofluoric acid-etching is indicated for repairs in lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramic; tribochemical silica coating is applicable to leucite-reinforced ceramic. Predominance of adhesive failures was observed (>85% in all groups). In conclusion, the success of surface treatments depends on the type of ceramic to be repaired.

Abstract
PURPOSE Three-dimensional finite element analysis was used to evaluate the effect of vertical and angular misfit in three-piece implant-supported screw-retained fixed prostheses on the biomechanical response in the peri-implant bone, implants, and prosthetic components. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four three-dimensional models were fabricated to represent a right posterior mandibular section with one implant in the region of the second premolar (2PM) and another in the region of the second molar (2M). The implants were splinted by a three-piece implant-supported metal-ceramic prosthesis and differed according to the type of misfit, as represented by four different models: Control = prosthesis with complete fit to the implants; UAM (unilateral angular misfit) = prosthesis presenting unilateral angular misfit of 100 μm in the mesial region of the 2M; UVM (unilateral vertical misfit) = prosthesis presenting unilateral vertical misfit of 100 μm in the mesial region of the 2M; and TVM (total vertical misfit) = prosthesis presenting total vertical misfit of 100 μm in the platform of the framework in the 2M. A vertical load of 400 N was distributed and applied on 12 centric points by the software Ansys, ie, a vertical load of 150 N was applied to each molar in the prosthesis and a vertical load of 100 N was applied at the 2PM. RESULTS The stress values and distribution in peri-implant bone tissue were similar for all groups. The models with misfit exhibited different distribution patterns and increased stress magnitude in comparison to the control. The highest stress values in group UAM were observed in the implant body and retention screw. The groups UVM and TVM exhibited high stress values in the platform of the framework and the implant hexagon, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The three types of misfit influenced the magnitude and distribution of stresses. The influence of misfit on peri-implant bone tissue was modest. Each type of misfit increased the stress values in different regions of the system.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of retightening and mechanical cycling on the maintenance of preload in the retention screws of implant-supported crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five groups (n = 12 in each group) of implant-crown assemblies were created according to different abutments and veneering materials: Gold UCLA abutments cast in gold alloy veneered with ceramic (group 1) and light-curing resin (group 2), UCLA abutments cast in titanium veneered with ceramic (group 3) and light-curing resin (group 4), and zirconia abutments with ceramic veneering (group 5). The crowns were attached to implants by gold retention screws. The assemblies were submitted to mechanical cycling for a total of 1 million cycles. Removal torque measurements were performed initially and after each period of 100,000 cycles; this was followed by screw retightening with 35 Ncm of torque. Data were evaluated with analysis of variance, the paired t test, and the Student t test. RESULTS All groups exhibited reduced removal torque values in comparison to insertion torque initially and after all periods of mechanical cycling. Analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences among the groups, but there were no differences among the periods of mechanical cycling or for the interaction between groups and cycling. Group 1 was the only group that did not show a difference between removal torque values of different cycling periods. The Student t test did not reveal statistically significant differences between mean removal torque values obtained before and after mechanical cycling, except for group 4. CONCLUSIONS Torque maintenance allowed screw joint stability in the present study. Mechanical cycling associated with the retightening of abutment screws did not influence the maintenance of insertion torque.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the influence of implants with or without threads representation on the outcome of a two-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two-dimensional FE models that reproduced a frontal section of edentulous mandibular posterior bone were constructed using a standard crown/implant/screw system representation. To evaluate the effect of implant threads, two models were created: a model in which the implant threads were accurately simulated (precise model) and a model in which implants with a smooth surface (press-fit implant) were used (simplified model). An evaluation was performed on ANSYS software, in which a load of 133 N was applied at a 30-degree angulation and 2 mm off-axis from the long axis of the implant on the models. The Von Mises stresses were measured. RESULTS The precise model (1.45 MPa) showed higher maximum stress values than the simplified model (1.2 MPa). Whereas in the cortical bone, the stress values differed by about 36% (292.95 MPa for the precise model and 401.14 MPa for the simplified model), in trabecular bone (19.35 MPa and 20.35 MPa, respectively), the stress distribution and stress values were similar. Stress concentrations occurred around the implant neck and the implant apex. CONCLUSIONS Considering implant and cortical bone analysis, remarkable differences in stress values were found between the models. Although the models showed different absolute stress values, the stress distribution was similar.

MATERIALS AND METHODS Impressions (n = 5) of a metal matrix containing 2 implants, 1 at 90 degrees to the surface and 1 at 65 degrees to the surface, were obtained with square impression copings joined together with dental floss splinting covered with autopolymerizing acrylic resin, an open custom tray, and vinyl polysiloxane impression material. Measurement of the angles (in degrees) of the implant analogs were assessed by the same blinded operator with a profilometer and through analysis of digitized images by AutoCAD software. For each implant analog, 3 readings were performed with each method. The results were subjected to a nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, with P < or = .05 considered significant. RESULTS For implants perpendicular to the horizontal surface of the specimen (90 degrees), there were no significant differences between the mean measurements obtained with the profilometer (90.04 degrees) and AutoCAD (89.95 degrees; P = .9142). In the analyses of the angled implants at 65 degrees in relation to the horizontal surface of the specimen, significant differences were observed (P = .0472) between the mean readings with the profilometer (65.73 degrees) and AutoCAD (66.25 degrees). CONCLUSIONS The degrees of accuracy of implant angulation recording vary among the techniques available and may vary depending on the angle of the implant. Further investigation is needed to determine the best test conditions and the best measuring technique for determination of the angle of the implant in vitro.

Abstract
AIM To avoid the limitations of 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis for Paenibacillus species, the usefulness of the RNA polymerase beta-subunit encoding gene (rpoB) was investigated as an alternative to the 16S rRNA gene for taxonomic studies. METHODS AND RESULTS Partial rpoB sequences were generated for the type strains of eight nitrogen-fixing Paenibacillus species. The presence of only one copy of rpoB in the genome of P. graminis strain RSA19(T) was demonstrated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and hybridization assays. A comparative analysis of the sequences of the 16S rRNA and rpoB genes was performed and the eight species showed between 91.6-99.1% (16S rRNA) and 77.9-97.3% (rpoB) similarity, allowing a more accurate discrimination between the different species using the rpoB gene. Finally, 24 isolates from the rhizosphere of different cultivars of maize previously identified as Paenibacillus spp. were assigned correctly to one of the nitrogen-fixing species. CONCLUSIONS, SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The data obtained in this study indicate that rpoB is a powerful identification tool, which can be used for the correct discrimination of the nitrogen-fixing species of agricultural and industrial importance within the genus Paenibacillus.

Abstract
Injection of an Ascaris suum extract (Asc) affects both the humoral and cellular immune responses to unrelated antigens when it is co-administered with these antigens. In the present study we evaluated the effect of Asc on macrophage activation in the early phase of Mycobacterium bovis BCG (Pasteur strain TMCC 1173) infection in C57Bl/6 mice. C57Bl/6 mice were injected intraperitoneally (ip) with 0.1 mg BCG (BCG group) or BCG plus 1 mg Asc (BCG + Asc group). The peritoneal exudates were obtained at 2, 7 and 14 days after infection. The numbers of IFN-gamma-secreting cells were assessed by the ELISPOT assay. Nitric oxide (NO) production was measured by the Griess method and by the evaluation of NADPH diaphorase activity in the peritoneal exudates. The administration of Asc extract increased NADPH diaphorase activity (2 days: control = 0, BCG = 7%, BCG + Asc = 13%, and Asc = 4%; 7 days: control = 4, BCG = 13%, BCG + Asc = 21%, and Asc = 4.5%) and TNF-alpha levels (mean +/- SD; 2 days: control = 0, BCG = 169 +/- 13, BCG + Asc = 202 +/- 37, and Asc = 0; 7 days: control = 0, BCG = 545 +/- 15.5, BCG + Asc = 2206 +/- 160.6, and Asc = 126 +/- 26; 14 days: control = 10 +/- 1.45, BCG = 9 +/- 1.15, BCG + Asc = 126 +/- 18, and Asc = 880 +/- 47.67 pg/ml) in the early phase of BCG infection. Low levels of NO production were detected at 2 and 7 days after BCG infection, increasing at 14 days (mean +/- SD; 2 days: control = 0, BCG = 3.7 +/- 1.59, BCG + Asc = 0.82 +/- 0.005, Asc = 0.48 +/- 0.33; 7 days: control = 0, BCG = 2.78 +/- 1.54, BCG + Asc = 3.07 +/- 1.05, Asc = 0; 14 days: control = 0, BCG = 9.05 +/- 0.53, BCG + Asc = 9.61 +/- 0.81, Asc = 10.5 +/- 0.2 (2 x 10(6)) cells/ml). Furthermore, we also observed that Asc co-injection induced a decrease of BCG-colony-forming units (CFU) in the spleens of BCG-infected mice during the first week of infection (mean +/- SD; 2 days: BCG = 1.13 +/- 0.07 and BCG + Asc = 0.798 +/- 0.305; 7 days: BCG = 1.375 +/- 0. 194 and BCG + Asc = 0.548 +/- 0.0226; 14 days: BCG = 0.473 +/- 0.184 and BCG + Asc = 0.675 +/- 0.065 (x 10(2)) CFU). The present data suggest that Asc induces the enhancement of the immune response in the early phase of BCG infection.

Abstract
Yeast communities associated with sugarcane leaves, stems and rhizosphere during different phases of plant development were studied near Campos, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Atmospheric temperature, soil granulometry and pH, and sugar cane juice degree Brix and pH were determined. Yeast communities associated with sugarcane were obtained after cellular extraction by shaking, blending and shaking plus sonication, and cultured on Yeast Nitrogen Base Agar plus glucose (0.5%) and Yeast Extract-Malt Extract Agar. No significant differences in yeast counts were found among the cellular extraction treatments and culture media. 230 yeast cultures were identified according to standard methods, and distinct yeast communities were found for each substrate studied. The prevalent species isolated from sugarcane were Cryptococcus laurentii, Cryptococcus albidus, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Debaryomyces hansenii.

Abstract
Twenty Pisolithus tinctorius isolates from different geographic locations and different hosts were characterized by the random amplified polymorphic DNA technique. Thirteen arbitrary primers generated 87 DNA fragments, all of them polymorphic. These data were used to calculate genetic distances among the isolates. The pairwise genetic distances ranged from 1 to 100%, with an average of 58.7%. Cluster analysis based on the amplified fragments grouped the isolates according to their host and geographical origins. Group I contained isolates collected in Brazil and group II those collected in the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to the diversity seen at the molecular level, the isolates also showed host specificity. Greenhouse experiments demonstrated that isolates from the Northern Hemisphere colonized mainly Pinus whereas isolates from Brazil colonized only Eucalyptus. The molecular data suggest that the Pisolithus tinctorius isolates analyzed belong to two distinct groups. The data also suggest new guidelines for future investigations on the taxonomy and systematic of this important fungus species. Furthermore, these results support future experiments aimed at the selection and development of improved isolates of P. tinctorius.
