The Association between Self-Care Activities and Depression in Adult Patients with Type 2 Diabetes in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Web-Based Survey Study

This study examined the level of adherence to self-care behaviors among individuals with type 2 diabetes in Saudi Arabia and its connection with depression and demographic factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among diabetes patients using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to measure depression and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) to evaluate diabetes self-care activities. Among the 252 participants who completed the survey, 43.2% were older than 55 and 59% were men. The ordinal regression model showed an association between the PHQ-9 and SDSCA scores with an OR of 0.83 (95% CI: 0.71 to 0.96, p = 0.013). The PHQ-9 score was significantly associated with blood sugar monitoring (OR: 0.90 [95% CI: 0.82 to 0.99, p = 0.003]), exercise (OR: 0.88 [95% CI: 0.79 to 0.98, p = 0.002]), and diet (OR: 0.94 [95% CI: 0.85 to 1.03, p = 0.045]). Of all the diabetes-related factors, only a history of hospitalization and receiving diabetes education were found to be associated with improved self-care behaviors. In conclusion, a negative association was found between PHQ-9 scores and the SDSCA mean score and most daily diabetic self-care behavior components.

A survey of drive-thru pharmacy services: Evaluating the acceptance and perspectives of community pharmacists in Saudi Arabia

Background

The practice of dispensing drugs in primary healthcare centers has shifted to community pharmacies in Saudi Arabia. These changes increase demand and mandate improving their services; one such is establishing pharmacy drive-thru services. To explore the effects of drive-thru services on the pharmacy profession, this study aimed to measure community pharmacists' acceptance, perception, and satisfaction regarding drive-thru services.

Methods

This cross-sectional study design was conducted in Saudi Arabia between January 2023 and May 2023-comparing the perception, acceptance, and satisfaction of pharmacists who work in a community pharmacy that provides a drive-thru service versus no drive-thru service. Community pharmacists were invited to complete an online questionnaire consisting of four sections developed from previous studies with some modifications. Descriptive statistical analysis and an independent t-test were utilized to test the difference between the two groups (providing drive-thru service vs. non) in their responses.

Results

This study included 380 community pharmacists, of whom 33 % provided drive-thru services and 67 % did not. Pharmacists' perceptions of drive-thru services differed significantly. Those with drive-thru services perceived lower convenience for delivering drug information and patient counseling, and they were concerned about the potential impact on their health effects (M = 3.15, SD = 1.34) compared to those without (M = 3.58, SD = 1.10), t (3 7 8) = -3.32, p < 0.01). However, they recognized the convenience of serving sick patients, the elderly, disabled individuals, and mothers with children in cars (M = 3.71, SD = 1.17), which was higher than those without (M = 4.04, SD = 1.21), t (3 7 8) = -2.70, p < 0.01). Regarding the current pharmacy layout suitability, pharmacists with drive-thru services found it more suitable (M = 3.13, SD = 1.14) than those without (M = 2.49, SD = 1.14), t (3 7 8) = 5.1, p < 0.01). However, the two groups had no significant difference in overall satisfaction.

Conclusion

Pharmacists working in pharmacies offering drive-thru services recognized certain benefits but also expressed concerns about health effects and decreased convenience for counseling. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and pharmacy management, highlighting the nuanced views of pharmacists in adopting drive-thru services.

The current view of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) among older adults in Saudi Arabia: a systematic review

Introduction: Potentially inappropriate medications PIMs are common among elderly population and becoming a global health issue. It has been associated with negative health consequences like preventable adverse drug reactions, hospitalization and mortality. Objectives: To investigate the most commonly potentially inappropriate medications in older adults in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, we aim to gain insights into the typical healthcare settings where healthcare providers offer services related to PIMs. Methods: This is a systematic review design using Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. PubMed and Google Scholar were used to search for the relevant studies using the following keywords (older adults, elderly, potentially inappropriate medications, inappropriate medications, PMIs, Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) with no restrictions to the date of publications nor the study language. Results: Only 8 studies have met our inclusion and exclusion criteria, which was most of them were cross-sectional study design (n = 6.75%) and all of them have been conducted in hospital-based settings. In addition, the prevalence of PIMs ranged from 19% to 80% depends on the site and administration of the study. We have found that proton pump inhibitors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, diuretics, gastrointestinal medications, and antidepressants were the most common reported PIMs in the included studies. Conclusion: The prevalence of PIMs among the elderly in Saudi Arabia is notably high ranged from 19% to 80%, underscoring the need for additional research to assess the existing practices within this vulnerable demographic across various healthcare settings.

Prevalence of polypharmacy in heart failure patients: A retrospective cross-sectional study in a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia

Background

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. It is a general term used to describe a group of disorders that affect the heart or blood vessels. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of polypharmacy in patients with heart failure.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional study in a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. Data was extracted from an electronic database between January 2019, and December 2022. The study included all adult patients with heart failure who visited outpatient clinics; individuals with cancer were excluded. The outcome variable in our study was "polypharmacy" which was defined as the use of eight or more medications. Descriptive analysis was performed using frequencies and percentages for categorical variables. In addition, Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the covariates associated with polypharmacy.

Results

A total of 331 patients with heart failure were included in this study. The prevalence of polypharmacy among our HF population was 39.88 %. Most participants were male (60.73 %), and 60 years or older (68 %). The most frequently used medications were beta-blockers (67.98 %) and diuretics (58.31 %), whereas the least frequently used medications were hydralazine and histamine H2 blockers (5.74, and 3.02 %, respectively). Polypharmacy was likely to be a non-significantly higher in individuals aged between 60 and 69 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.52; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.78-2.98) and suffering from hypertension (AOR = 1.48; 95 % CI 0.83-2.64). However, patients with heart failure and diabetes mellitus had a significant six-fold higher of polypharmacy than those without diabetes mellitus (AOR = 6.55; 95 % CI 3.71-11.56).

Conclusion

Patients with heart failure often use multiple medications. Patients with heart failure together with diabetes have a higher risk of polypharmacy. Therefore, healthcare professionals should manage polypharmacy to improve the outcomes in patients with heart failure.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception of Health Care Providers Providing Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services to Older Adults in Saudi Arabia

INTRODUCTION

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is identified as a group of services provided to the patient in order to optimize the medication use in order to mitigate adverse drug reactions (ADRs), drug-drug interaction (DDI), and polypharmacy. Elderly populations above 60 years old are at high risk for Medication-related Problems (MRPs) due to several factors. Therefore, MTM programs showed good contributions globally regarding enhancing medication use in the elderly population. Thus, evident information regarding its implementation in Saudi Arabia is lacking in the literature.

OBJECTIVE

Our objective is to assess community pharmacists' knowledge, attitude, and barriers to providing MTM services to the older adult population in Saudi Arabia.

METHODOLOGY

A cross-sectional study has been conducted among community pharmacists across the Kingdom. It was survey-based research that was designed and conducted through (QuestionPro). The survey was distributed for the community pharmacists from Feb-May 2023 via (QuestionPro). Descriptive analysis was performed using SAS OnDemand to analyze the categorical variables and test it with the outcome of interest.

RESULTS

Out of the 528 participants who have viewed our questionnaire, 319 participants have completed the survey in 5 min average time. Most of our participants were male, holding a bachelor's degree, and had an average working load of more than 40 h a week, respectively (84.95%, 92.48%, and 76.18%). In addition, the participants were from different regions of the Kingdom, which enhanced the generalizability of our findings. Moreover, 65.52% have reported a higher level of knowledge, while 34.48% have reported a moderate to low level of knowledge regarding MTM service. Most of those with a higher level of knowledge maintain a positive attitude regarding MTM service, its implementation, and dealing with older adult patients in the community pharmacy. In addition, lacking the time, training, and presence of a private consultation room were the top barriers to provide MTM services in the community pharmacy in Saudi Arabia.

CONCLUSION

Educational sessions regarding MTM services among the older adult population are highly recommended for community pharmacists before its implementation.

The Level of Burden among Caregivers of Patients with Alzheimer's Disease in Saudi Arabia

BACKGROUND

Caregiver burden is a serious global issue associated with the growing number of older adult patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD patients become more dependent on their caregivers and require assistance with basic daily life activities. This study aims to measure the caregiver burden of informal caregivers of AD patients and to determine their characteristics. In addition, it intends to understand caregiver coping techniques and assess their medication knowledge.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study including 148 informal caregivers mainly recruited by the Saudi Alzheimer's Disease Association (SADA). A four-part study questionnaire was used for data collection in the Arabic Language and included the following: socio-demographic characteristics of AD patients and their caregivers, the 12-item version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), and adapted questions on coping techniques and medication knowledge.

RESULTS

A total of 148 caregivers (62% were female) participated in this study, and 79.06% were between 30 and 60 years old. The ZBI average score was 27, indicating a moderate to high burden. Caregivers reported their need for services to improve their quality of life. The medication knowledge was insufficient in most aspects except that more than half were aware of medications' side effects.

CONCLUSION

Our study revealed that the average burden among informal caregivers of AD patients was moderate-high.

Incidence and Risk Factors of Colistin-Induced Nephrotoxicity Associated with The International Consensus Guidelines for the Optimal Use of the Polymyxins: A Retrospective Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Saudi Arabia

Background: Colistin is an effective therapy against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria. However, nephrotoxicity is a major issue with its use. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the incidence and the potential risk factors of nephrotoxicity in colistin-treated patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. All adult patients aged 18 years and older who received colistin for ≥72 h were included in the study, while end-stage kidney disease patients requiring dialysis or had renal transplants were excluded. The incidence and severity of acute kidney injury (AKI) were assessed based on the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). Result: Out of 128 patients who received colistin, 51.56% of them have experienced AKI. The incidence was increased among oldest patients (above 80) and those who did not receive the appropriate dose (p-value = 0.0003). In addition, the median time until the AKI occurred was 10 days after receiving the colistin treatment. Rates of AKI in patients with previous AKI (71.7%) were three times higher than patients who did not previously experience AKI (HR = 2.97, 95% CI [1.8-4.8]). Conclusions: Nephrotoxicity is a significant issue among patients who receive colistin in the hospital, especially among older patients and those who did not receive the appropriate dose. As a result, healthcare providers should play a major role in colistin dosing, especially among the older adult population.

Changes in student pharmacists' confidence in attaining geriatrics competencies and attitudes toward older adults across the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum

To determine if student pharmacists' confidence in their knowledge and skills, and their attitudes toward older adults improved throughout pharmacy school with an integrated geriatrics didactic curriculum (years 1-3) and a final year of clinical training including a required advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) in geriatrics (year 4). A two-part voluntary anonymous survey was administered at three different time points to two large cohorts of student pharmacists. The first part of the survey assessed students' confidence in attaining geriatrics competencies. The second part of the survey used the UCLA Geriatrics Attitudes Scale to assess students' attitudes. Of the 286 students who were emailed the survey, 236 student pharmacists completed it at the first assessment. Student pharmacists showed an increase in confidence in achieving geriatrics competencies from their first year to their third year, and further increase after their clinical training. Most students also held a generally positive attitude toward older adults from P1 to P4 year. Integration of geriatrics throughout the didactic and experiential curriculum made an impact on student pharmacists' confidence in their competency toward caring for older adults, while maintaining a positive attitude toward older adults throughout pharmacy school.

Time course evaluation of lacosamide alone and in polypharmacy on behavioral manifestations and oxidative stress in lithium-pilocarpine-induced model

The lithium-pilocarpine model in rats is commonly used to study the characteristic events of acute status epilepticus (SE), epileptogenesis and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Here we investigated the impact of lacosamide alone and in combination with other drugs (pregabalin, piracetam and scopolamine) on spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRSs) and behavioral parameters during the time frame of 6 weeks after SE. In addition, the level of oxidative stress in the hippocampus was accessed by real-time microdialysis study (8-isoprostanes) and antioxidants enzymes in the homogenate. Results revealed severe behavioral deficits with the control epileptic group and animals displayed hyperexcitability, aggression apprehension and memory insufficiency. Pharmacological manipulation for 6 weeks with lacosamide (L) - 80 mg/kg; in polypharmacy with pregabalin (L/P) - 50/50 mg/kg and piracetam (L/Pi) - 50/140 mg/kg significantly (P < 0.05) ameliorated the anxiety-related behavior (open filed, elevated plus maze, light/dark tests), depression (forced swim test) and improved spatial/reference memory (Morris water maze). There were low incidences of seizures in L, L/P and L/Pi groups revealing disease-modifying effects of employed drugs. Furthermore, the chronic use of scopolamine (L/P/S; 50/50/2 mg/kg) as polypharmacy with the concept of antagonizing the cholinergic inputs in the epileptogenic phase aberrated the behavioral situation further worse. Treatments with L/P and L/Pi significantly attenuated (P < 0.05) the oxidative stress by reducing 8-isoprostanes and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Furthermore, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels in the L/P group were significantly (P < 0.05) improved. Overall, our findings support the use of a combination of drugs (L/P and L/Pi) in lithium-pilocarpine model which remarkably ameliorated SRSs, reduced anxiety-related behaviors, retention of spatial/reference memory and lowered oxidative stress in a time-course evaluation 6 weeks post- SE insult.

A Laboratory Session to Prepare Pharmacy Students to Manage the Opioid Crisis Situation

Objective. To educate third-year pharmacy students about the role of pharmacists in the opioid crisis and measure their knowledge, confidence, and attitudes towards opioids and opioid overdose. Methods. All third-year students (n=130) enrolled in a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree program participated in opioid overdose and naloxone education and training followed by a three-part laboratory session that included mock naloxone counseling, case-based discussion of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), and equianalgesic opioid dose conversion scenarios. A pre- and post-assessment focused on the individual's clinical knowledge, confidence, and attitudes about opioid overdose management and naloxone use was administered before and after the laboratory session to evaluate the student's baseline understanding and experience compared to learning gains from the session. An evaluation of the laboratory session was also conducted. Results. Upon completion, 99% percent of students rated the opioid laboratory as excellent (59%) or good (40%). Students believed the laboratory was stimulating (93%), relevant to pharmacy practice (96%), and contributed to their professional development (97%), and that the information provided was at an appropriate level (98%). Knowledge-based assessments improved in the areas of PDMP timely reporting, differentiating between naloxone devices, and naloxone administration technique. Student attitudes toward managing opioid overdoses improved on a majority of items. The majority of students agreed they had enough information to help them manage an opioid overdose (88.5%) and denied the need for additional training (61.5%). Conclusion. An active-learning laboratory helped to improve pharmacy students' knowledge, confidence, and attitudes with regard to opioids and the use of naloxone to treat a patient who has overdosed.

Comparison of broad-spectrum antibiotics and narrow-spectrum antibiotics in the treatment of lower extremity cellulitis

OBJECTIVE

Cellulitis is a commonly encountered medical illness and is most frequently caused by Group A β-hemolytic Streptococcus species and Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of patients with lower extremity cellulitis treated with broad-spectrum and narrow-spectrum antibiotics.

METHODS

This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in a community tertiary hospital between January 2016 and May 2016. Patients were included if they were diagnosed with uncomplicated non-purulent lower extremity cellulitis. Patients were divided into two groups: Individuals receiving narrow-spectrum antibiotics or receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio of repeat visit between the groups.

RESULTS

A total of 599 patients with uncomplicated cellulitis were identified; of which 120 were included in the study (93 in narrow-spectrum arm and 27 in broad-spectrum arm). Repeat visit due to cellulitis was similar in both Groups 1 (4%) and 3 (3%) (P = 0.89) in the broad-spectrum arm and narrow-spectrum arm, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Broad-spectrum antibiotic use in uncomplicated cellulitis was common and unjustified given the results of our study. Implementation of clinical practice guidelines is recommended in limiting broad-spectrum antibiotics use in such population.

Medical apps used during advanced pharmacy practice experiences

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to determine what type of medical applications (apps) are being used by fourth-year students during advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs).

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING

Recent doctor of pharmacy school graduates were surveyed pertaining to their use of medical apps on APPEs, frequency of use for select apps, willingness to buy apps and at what cost, and their perceived importance on using medical apps in their pharmacy practice. The survey concluded by inquiring if medical apps should be taught in the pharmacy curriculum.

FINDINGS

Ninety of 132 recent graduates responded to the survey and over 97% of the students used medical apps on their APPEs. Lexicomp^®, UpToDate^® and the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk calculator were the most frequently used applications during APPEs. Of those surveyed, 83% believe that medical apps should be taught in pharmacy school.

DISCUSSION AND SUMMARY

Medical apps are frequently used on APPEs. It may be prudent to teach students how to use and evaluate medical apps before going on experiences so that students and patients can get the most benefit from these tools.

Multifaceted C-X-C Chemokine Receptor 4 (CXCR4) Inhibition Interferes with Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy-Induced Glioma Dissemination

Resistance to antiangiogenic therapy in glioblastoma (GBM) patients may involve hypoxia-induced expression of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) on invading tumor cells, macrophage/microglial cells (MGCs), and glioma stem cells (GSCs). We determined whether antagonizing CXCR4 with POL5551 disrupts anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy-induced glioma growth and dissemination. Mice bearing orthotopic CT-2A or GL261 gliomas received POL5551 and/or anti-VEGF antibody B20-4.1.1. Brain tissue was analyzed for tumor volume, invasiveness, hypoxia, vascular density, proliferation, apoptosis, GSCs, and MGCs. Glioma cells were evaluated for CXCR4 expression and polymorphism and POL5551's effects on CXCR4 ligand binding, cell viability, and migration. No CXCR4 mutations were identified. POL5551 inhibited CXCR4 binding to its ligand, stromal cell-derived factor-1α, and reduced hypoxia- and stromal cell-derived factor-1α-mediated migration dose-dependently but minimally affected cell viability. In vivo, B20-4.1.1 increased hypoxic foci and invasiveness, as seen in GBM patients receiving anti-VEGF therapy. Combination of POL5551 and B20-4.1.1 reduced both glioma invasiveness by 16% to 39% and vascular density compared to B20-4.1.1 alone in both glioma models. Reduced populations of GSCs and MGCs were also seen in CT-2A tumors. POL5551 concentrations, evaluated by mass spectrometry, were higher in tumors than in neighboring brain tissues, likely accounting for the results. Inhibition of CXCR4-regulated tumoral, stem cell, and immune mechanisms by adjunctive CXCR4 antagonists may help overcome antiangiogenic therapy resistance, benefiting GBM patients.

Student Knowledge, Skills, and Self-Efficacy Gains After Completing an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience in Geriatrics

Objective. To assess changes in pharmacy students' knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy after completing an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) in geriatrics. Design. During the 2013-2014 academic year, 30 Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy students were required to complete a 5-week Geriatrics APPE at Plaza Professional Pharmacy in Richmond, Virginia. All students completed a 25-point knowledge-based pre- and post-assessment to measure students' self-efficacy. The average time required to accurately fill one unit dose prescription card before and after completing the APPE was also evaluated. Assessment. Students' average score on the knowledge component improved significantly from 54% to 88% after completing the APPE. The average time required to fill one prescription decreased significantly from 4.0 minutes to 2.5 minutes. Students reported an increase in self-efficacy in the following areas: communication, immunizations, geriatrics-specific pharmacotherapy knowledge, and the ability to fill and check monthly unit dose prescription cards. Conclusion. Requiring fourth-year pharmacy students to complete a geriatrics APPE as a capstone experience to the integrated geriatrics content covered in the first through third years of the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum provides an important opportunity to improve students' knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy in providing care to older adults.

Abstract A20: A novel CXCR4 antagonist interferes with antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy-induced glioma dissemination

Background: Resistance to antiangiogenic therapy (AT) in patients with glioblastoma (GBM) treated with bevacizumab (BEV) is characterized by local recurrence and distant dissemination of gliomas associated with remodeling of tumor vessels and pronounced hypoxia known to promote glioma cell invasion. Expression of the chemokine receptor CXCR4 and its ligand stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) is enhanced in invading tumor cells (CXCR4) and neurons and blood vessels (SDF-1α) in GBM and associated with tumor hypoxia, proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis. Using Protein Epitope Mimetics (PEM) technology (Robinson JA et al., 2008), Polyphor Ltd. has developed selective, highly potent CXCR4 antagonists (De Marco SJ et al., 2006) (U.S. Patent no. 8,716,242), such as POL5551. To address the problem of resistance to AT, we sought to determine whether combined therapy (CTx) with POL5551 and the murine equivalent of BEV (antibody B20-4.1.1) could inhibit the invasion and associated pathologic characteristics of gliomas in vivo.

Methods: Adult C57BL/6 mice implanted orthotopically with syngeneic CT-2A or GL261 glioma cells were randomized on day 14 into 4 groups: 1) control, 2) POL5551 (5 mg/kg s.c.), 3) anti-murine vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) monoclonal antibody B20-4.1.1 (5 mg/kg i.p.; Genentech Inc.) (Bagri A et al., 2010) and 4) combined POL5551 and B20-4.1.1 (CTx). On day 28, brain tissues were processed, sections analyzed for tumor volume and invasiveness (Sottoriva A et al., 2010) (H&E), hypoxia (Hypoxyprobe), proliferation (pHH3, phosphohistone H3), vascular density (CD105), apoptosis (cleaved caspase 3) and microglial (IBA1, ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1) and stem (nestin) cellular fractions and the results analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The tissue concentrations of POL5551 were measured by mass spectrometry.

Results: Following B20-4.1.1, both glioma models recapitulated the increased invasive phenotype seen in human GBM associated with increased tumor hypoxia and reduced cellular proliferation and vascular density. Following POL5551 alone, tumor proliferation was slightly diminished. Nestin immunopositivity in CT-2A glioma was markedly reduced following POL5551, and to an intermediate level with CTx, consistent with a previous report (Barone A et al., 2014). In both models, CTx reduced tumor invasiveness (by up to 39.3% compared with B20-4.1.1 alone) and vascular density together with increased apoptosis. In CT-2A glioma, CTx also diminished IBA1 immunopositivity. The concentration of POL5551 was higher in GL261 glioma (45.8 nM) than in brain adjacent to tumor (23.7 nM) or normal brain (11.1 nM) and sufficient to account for its biological effects given the high binding affinity (0.5 nM) of POL5551 for CXCR4. In preliminary work, POL5551 reduced the rate of migration of GL261 glioma cells in vitro.

Conclusions: Following anti-VEGF antibody treatment, both murine glioma models recapitulated the increased invasive phenotype seen in human GBM associated with a more hypoxic tumor microenvironment. In both tumor models, CTx with POL5551 and B20-4.1.1 may be beneficial in overcoming AT-induced glioma dissemination. Importantly, POL5551 crossed the blood-brain barrier and accumulated to biologically active levels in glioma tissue. Our results suggest the potential clinical utility of PEM CXCR4 antagonists as adjunct therapy for patients with GBM.
