Abstract
In cerebral blood flow studies, migraine aura is characterized by a posterior cortical hypoperfusion. In contrast, only rare and mild changes in brain perfusion have been demonstrated in migraine without aura, suggesting two different haemodynamic patterns in migraine with and without aura. Our aim was to study hypoperfusion with positron emission tomography (PET) as early as possible during spontaneous migraine without aura attacks. We used H215O PET to investigate seven patients (six female, one male) with migraine without aura (International Classification of Headache Diseases-II code 1.1) in three situations: during the headache phase, after headache relief following sumatriptan injection, and during an attack-free interval. Statistical analysis was performed with SPM2. Within 4 h after the attack onset, significant relative bilateral posterior cortical hypoperfusion was found and persisted after headache relief following sumatriptan injection. A posterior cortical hypoperfusion demonstrated in migraine without aura could suggest a common pathogenesis in migraine with and without aura. The significance of relative posterior hypoperfusion in migraine without aura is discussed according to the current knowledge of migraine pathogenesis.

Abstract
The study was designed to compare the response to almotriptan in migraine patients who take medication early in the course of the attack with that when medication is taken after pain has become moderate or severe. A randomized, four-arm, multicentre, multinational, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of almotriptan (12.5 mg) comparing treatment administration when pain intensity was mild and within 1 h of headache onset vs. pain that had become moderate or severe was conducted. Of 491 migraineurs enrolled, 403 were evaluable [intention-to-treat population (ITT)]. Their mean age was 38 years, 84% were female and they had a mean of 3.7 attacks/month. Of these patients, 10% did not take medication according to their randomly allocated basal pain intensity (mild or moderate/severe) and were subsequently reassigned to that group for this analysis —'Act when Mild (AwM)' group. In the almotriptan arms, 53% of mild basal pain and 38% of moderate/severe basal pain patients were pain free at 2 h ( P = 0.03; primary end-point). Corresponding proportions in the placebo groups were 25% and 17% (statistically significant vs. respective almotriptan arms). Secondary end-points (ITT) were also significantly in favour of early intervention with almotriptan, both between and across treatment groups, such as sustained pain free: 45.6% vs. 30.5% ( P = 0.02). Adverse events were reported in < 5% of treated patients in all groups (NS), with no serious events. Treatment with almotriptan while migraine pain is still mild provides statistically significant and clinically relevant enhancements in efficacy compared with treatment when pain has reached higher severity levels.

Abstract
Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is an autosomal recessive neurological disorder whose characteristic features include hyperkinetic movements and abnormal red blood cell morphology. Mutations in the CHAC gene on 9q21 were recently found to cause chorea-acanthocytosis. CHAC encodes a large, novel protein with a yeast homologue implicated in protein sorting. In this study, all 73 exons plus flanking intronic sequence in CHAC were screened for mutations by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography in 43 probands with ChAc. We identified 57 different mutations, 54 of which have not previously been reported, in 39 probands. The novel mutations comprise 15 nonsense, 22 insertion/deletion, 15 splice-site and two missense mutations and are distributed throughout the CHAC gene. Three mutations were found in multiple families within this or our previous study. The preponderance of mutations that are predicted to cause absence of gene product is consistent with the recessive inheritance of this disease. The high proportion of splice-site mutations found is probably a reflection of the large number of exons that comprise the CHAC gene. The CHAC protein product, chorein, appears to have a certain tolerance to amino-acid substitutions since only two out of nine substitutions described here appear to be pathogenic.

Abstract
This multicentre, randomised, double-blind study compared oral zolmitriptan 2.5 mg with a combination of oral acetylsalicylic acid 900 mg and metoclopramide 10 mg as acute anti-migraine therapy for 3 migraine attacks. In total, 666 patients took at least one dose of study medication (326 took zolmitriptan and 340 took acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide). The percentage of patients with a 2-hour headache response after the first dose for all 3 attacks (the primary end point) was 33.4% with zolmitriptan and 32.9% with acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide [odds ratio 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77-1.47; p = 0.7228]. For the majority of secondary end points, the two treatments demonstrated comparable efficacy. However, post hoc analysis showed that significantly more patients receiving zolmitriptan were free of pain 2 h after the first dose in all 3 attacks compared with patients receiving acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide (10.7 vs. 5.3%; odds ratio 2.19, 95% CI 1.23-4.03; p = 0.0095). In addition, post hoc analysis showed that the overall 2-hour pain-free response rate was consistently higher with zolmitriptan (34.6%) than with acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide (27.9%) (odds ratio 1.40, 95% CI 1.09-1.78; p = 0.007). Both treatments reduced migraine-associated nausea, vomiting, phonophobia and photophobia. There were no important inter-group differences with respect to the onset of meaningful migraine relief, the frequency of headache recurrence, the usage or efficacy of a second dose of medication or the use of escape medication. However, at the last attack, the proportion of patients who expressed overall satisfaction with the treatment was significantly higher in the zolmitriptan group, i.e. 83.7%, versus 75.0% with acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide (p = 0.0346). Both agents were well tolerated. Adverse events were reported by 40.8% (133/326) of zolmitriptan-treated patients and 29.1% (99/340) of those treated with acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide. The incidence of withdrawals due to adverse events was very low with both zolmitriptan (0.9%) and the combination regimen (1.5%); the latter percentage included 1 patient who withdrew from the study due to phlebitis, which was classified as a serious adverse event. This study showed that zolmitriptan is effective and well tolerated for the acute treatment of moderate to severe migraine. Zolmitriptan was at least as effective as acetylsalicylic acid plus metoclopramide in achieving a 2-hour headache response, but significantly more effective than the combination therapy for other end points, including the 2-hour pain-free response.

Abstract
The rare forms of migraine should be studied so that they can be recognized, thereby avoiding diagnostic errors and unnecessary complementary investigations. These rare forms can be divided into three categories: 1) atypical auras, characterized by the following: their semiology (visual or sensory illusions or hallucinations); their manner of onset (sudden onset of aura, with development of migraine in under four minutes); their duration (aura prolonged for between 60 minutes and seven days); aura with absence of accompanying cephalgia. This form of migraine could be confused with a case of partial epilepsy or AIT and raises a problem of differential diagnosis requiring an etiological investigation to ensure correct diagnosis; 2) clinical forms which are for the most part recognized by the International Headache Society's (IHS) classification, i.e., basilar artery migraine, familial hemiplegic migraine, ophthalmoplegic migraine and the rare occurrence of retinal migraine. Confusional migraine, a disorder which is mainly encountered in childhood, has not been categorized by the IHS but may be part of the symptomatology of the above-described forms; and 3) secondary migraines, in which a triggering mechanism causes migraine attacks to appear in a subject who was not previously affected by this disorder. This category covers post-traumatic migraine, migraine of cervical origin, the co-morbidity of migraine and epileptic seizures, and rare cases of symptomatic migraine which are indicative of underlying general disease or an intracranial lesion, i.e., a tumor or arteriovenous malformation.

Abstract
In this international, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single attack study, 'triptan naive' migraine patients were randomized in an 8:8:1 ratio to receive zolmitriptan 5 mg, sumatriptan 100 mg or placebo. The all-treated analysis included 1058 patients who took study medication. The primary endpoint, complete headache response, was reported by 39%, 38% and 32% of patients treated with zolmitriptan, sumatriptan and placebo, respectively, with no significant difference between treatment groups. In patients with moderate headache at baseline, complete response was significantly greater following zolmitriptan than after placebo (48% vs. 27%; P=0.01); there was no significant difference between sumatriptan and placebo groups (40% vs. 27%). In patients with severe baseline headache (where a greater reduction in headache intensity is required for a headache response), there was no significant difference between any groups in complete headache response rates. For secondary endpoints, active treatment groups were significantly superior to placebo for: 1-, 2- and 4-h headache response (e.g. 2-h headache response rates: zolmitriptan 59%; sumatriptan 61%; placebo 44%; P < 0.01 vs. placebo); pain-free response rates at 2 and 4 h; alleviation of nausea and vomiting; use of escape medication and restoration of normal activity. The incidence of adverse events was similar between zolmitriptan and sumatriptan groups but was slightly lower in the placebo group. The lack of difference between active treatments and placebo for complete response probably reflects the high placebo response obtained, which is probably a result of deficiencies in trial design. For example, the randomization ratio may result in high expectation of active treatment. Thus, while ethically patient exposure to placebo should be minimized, this must be balanced against the scientific rationale underpinning study design.

Abstract
Prosomes were originally identified as 20S particles associated with untranslated mRNA; they also constitute the core of the 26S proteasomes. The cellular distribution of three types of prosomes characterized by the presence of subunits with molecular masses of 23, 27, and 30 kDa was analyzed using an immunocytochemical approach on cultured chicken erythroblasts. The prosomes containing the p27K and p30K subunits were found in diffuse distribution in both nuclei and cytoplasm. In contrast, the prosomes containing the p23K subunit, although relatively rare in the nuclear space, were found concentrated in one or two large spots. Using in situ hybridization with an alpha(A)-globin gene-specific riboprobe we found that the p23K-type prosomes colocalize in the nucleus with centers of globin (pre-)mRNA processing, and of mRNA accumulation in the cytoplasm. This result suggests there is local coincidence of specific-type prosome function with processing and, possibly, transport of a particular kind of (pre-)mRNA.

Migraine is a chronic disease that significantly reduces quality of life between, as well as during, attacks. Treatments that provide consistent relief may reduce the burden of the disease. In the open-label phase of a two-part study, patients could choose to treat initial, persistent or recurrent migraine headache of any intensity with 2.5 mg or 5 mg zolmitriptan. This novel study design allowed patients to manage and maximise their migraine relief. Headache response rates and pain-free response rates were assessed within two hours of dosing with zolmitriptan, and response rates were compared across migraines with and without a history of aura, and associated or not with menses. Consistency of response was also assessed in those patients treating at least 20 attacks. Of 49,784 attacks treated, 66% (32,737 attacks) were treated with a single dose of zolmitriptan. Two-hour headache response rates to an initial dose of 2.5 mg or 5 mg zolmitriptan were 85% (median 95%) and 79% (median 88%), respectively, across all attacks. Corresponding pain-free response rates were 69% and 59%. Responses were independent of gender and age and were similar in patients with and without aura and in attacks associated or not associated with menses. Consistent response rates were achieved within individual patients; during months 1 to 3, 64% of patients reported a headache response in > 75% of their migraine attacks. In patients treating at least 20 attacks, 2.5 mg and 5 mg zolmitriptan produced consistently high headache response rates (range 84-91% and 76-84%, respectively) and pain-free response rates (range 70-76% and 58-65%, respectively) across attacks. In the minority of attacks requiring a second dose of zolmitriptan for persistent or recurrent headache, response rates to a second dose were also consistent across attacks. In conclusion, zolmitriptan 2.5 mg and 5 mg show consistent effectiveness in the treatment of multiple migraine attacks in individual patients and are unaffected by gender, age and the presence of aura or the relationship to menses.

Abstract
This randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, multicenter, parallel-group study aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of calcium carbasalate (equivalent to 900 mg aspirin) plus metoclopramide 10 mg (CM) with ergotamine tartrate 1 mg plus caffeine 100 mg (EC) administered in the treatment of 2 acute migraine attacks. A total of 296 patients fulfilling the International Headache Society diagnostic criteria for migraine were enrolled. In total, one or two migraine attacks were treated in 268 and 235 patients, respectively. The primary endpoint for the first treated attack was headache relief, with intensity decreasing from moderate or severe to mild or absent 2 h after drug intake. Usual secondary efficacy endpoints were assessed. A superiority of CM over EC was observed for both treated attacks for the main endpoint: success in 54 versus 36%, p = 0.003 for the first attack and 60 versus 44%, p = 0.02 for the second attack. CM was also significantly superior to EC during the first attack for complete headache relief (20 vs. 8%, p = 0.006), nausea (42 vs. 63%, p = 0. 007) and willingness to take the drug again (90 vs. 80%, p = 0.043). The global efficacy evaluation, rated by the investigators, was significantly more favorable to CM for both attacks (p = 0.001 for the first attack and p = 0.02 for the second). The patients' evaluation was significant for the first attack (p = 0.002). The global incidence of adverse events was 45% higher with EC, though not significant (32 vs. 22%, p = 0.075). They were most often unspecific and mild to moderate in intensity. Gastrointestinal side effects were significantly less frequent with CM than EC (7 vs. 21%, p = 0.001). Thus, CM is more effective and has a better gastrointestinal safety than EC in the acute treatment of migraine attacks.

Abstract
The differentiation of tracheal epithelial cells in primary culture was investigated according to the nature of the extracellular matrix used. Cultures obtained by the explant technique were realized on a type I collagen substratum either as a thin, dried coating or as a thick, hydrated gel supplemented with culture medium and serum. These two types of substratum induced distinct cell morphology and cytokeratin expression in the explant derived cells. Where cells are less proliferating (from Day 7 to 10 of culture), differentiation was evaluated by morphologic ultrastructural observations, immunocytochemical detection of cytokeratins, and determination of cytokeratin pattern by biochemical analysis. The epithelium obtained on gel was multilayered, with small, round basal cells under large, flattened upper cells. The determination of the keratin pattern expressed by cells grown on gel revealed an expression of keratin 13, already considered as a specific marker of squamous metaplasia, that diminished with retinoic acid treatment. Present results demonstrated by confocal microscopy that K13-positive cells were large upper cells with a dense keratin network, whereas lower cells were positively stained with a specific monoclonal antibody to basal cells (KB37). Moreover, keratin neosynthesis analysis pointed out a higher expression of K6, a marker of hyperproliferation, on gel than on coating. All these data suggest a differentiation of rabbit tracheal epithelial cells grown on gel toward squamous metaplasia. By contrast, the epithelium observed on coating is nearly a monolayer of very large and spread out cells. No K13-positive cells were observed, but an increase in the synthesis of simple epithelium marker (K18) was detected. These two substrata, similar in composition and different in structure, induce separate differentiation and appear as good tools to explore the mechanisms of differentiation of epithelial tracheal cells.

Abstract
In a previous work, we showed that the differentiation-dependent expression of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) in Caco-2 cells, a human colon adenocarcinoma cell line, was controlled at the mRNA level (D. Darmoul et al. J. Biol. Chem., 1992, 267, 4824-4833). Whether post-translational events may contribute to the final control of DPP IV cell surface expression was explored here by studying the potential effect of forskolin (FK), a drug known to permanently stimulates adenylyl cyclase and to strongly perturbs glucose metabolism in fully differentiated Caco-2 cells. FK treatment reduces by about 50% the amount of active DPP IV present at the brush border membrane, whereas the total amount of active DPP IV remains unchanged. Biosynthesis and maturation of DPP IV were measured using [35S]methionine labeling and were shown to be essentially unaffected by FK treatment. Pulse-chase experiments demonstrate that up to 50% of the neosynthesized DPP IV do not appear at the apical membrane after FK treatment. To get further insight into this phenomenon, we have used confocal laser scanning microscopy. We demonstrate that the blockade of DPP IV transport is associated with the accumulation of this protein in intracellular vesicles. Double-staining experiments demonstrate that these vesicles are not labeled with a monoclonal antibody directed against the Golgi apparatus but display a strong staining with a polyclonal antibody raised against lamp-1, a lysosomal membrane protein. Using a newly developed image analysis procedure, we have been able to quantitate the relative distribution of lamp-1 and DPP IV labels in both control and forskolin-treated cells. We show that the overlap of the two labels dramatically increases in FK-treated Caco-2 cells. These results suggest that, beside the transcriptional level, post-translational events may be involved in the final control of the apical expression of a differentiation-dependent hydrolase.

Abstract
The expression and distribution of two cell adhesion molecules, N-cadherin and N-CAM, at the surface of cultured leg muscle cells from 11-day-old chicken embryos were studied and compared. N-cadherin, which was expressed by fusing myoblasts, was down-regulated on old myotubes while N-CAM was still present. Both molecules, as viewed by confocal microscopy, appeared to have coaccumulated at the areas of contact between fusing myoblasts. However, immunogold electron microscopy did not reveal significant colocalization of N-cadherin and N-CAM, and their segregation after antibody-induced patching suggested the absence of direct interactions between N-cadherin and N-CAM. The role of the Ca2+ dependent cell adhesion molecule N-cadherin in myogenesis was investigated. Myoblast fusion was inhibited (1) with a synthetic peptide containing the H-A-V sequence and (2) with a monoclonal anti-N-cadherin antibody, demonstrating that N-cadherin-mediated cell adhesion is required for myoblast fusion. Under the same conditions no effect of anti-N-CAM antibodies was observed. Taken together these observations suggest that N-cadherin, acting independently from N-CAM, is a major cell adhesion molecule involved in embryonic myoblast fusion in vitro.

Abstract
The expression of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV), an intestinal brush-border hydrolase, has been studied in the rat jejunum crypt-villus axis. DPP IV enzyme activity is lower in crypt cells than in villus cells. Indirect immunofluorescence studies, using a polyclonal antibody raised against purified DPP IV, show a gradient of immunoreactivity from the crypts to the villi that was quantified using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Accordingly, Western blot analysis demonstrates that the steady-state amount of DPP IV is much lower in crypt cells than in villus cells. Northern blot analysis was performed using our cDNA probe for human DPP IV that presents more than 94% homology with rat DPP IV cDNA. Results clearly show that there is approximately seven times less DPP IV mRNA in crypt cells than in villus cells. We conclude that the differentiation-dependent expression of DPP IV in rat jejunum is primarily controlled at the mRNA level.

Abstract
The first complete three dimensional ultrastructural reconstruction of pancreatic cell nucleoli, was done using EM and computer 3D-assisted reconstruction of serial sections with interactive 3D back-to-front and color display methods based on voxel representation. The purpose of the study was to depict the architecture of the nucleolar components. We obtained information about the location of the nucleolus within the nuclear volume and about the shape and polarity of the 3 main nucleolar territories.

Abstract
Oxygenated free-radicals appear to play a prominent role in mediating damage associated with gastrointestinal diseases. Production of reactive oxygen metabolites in ischemia-reperfusion involves oxidases found in resident phagocytic cells and microvascular and mucosal epithelial cells. Platelet activating factor (PAF), a phospholipid associated with inflammatory disorders, has been shown to both prime and amplify the release of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide from polymorphonuclear neutrophils and macrophages stimulated by FMLP or PMA. To further elucidate the involvement of free radicals in intestinal damage and the potential role of PAF in their production, we examined the effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and BN 52021 (ginkgolide B) on ischemia-reperfusion induced damage in the small intestine. The study involved 32 Sprague-Dawley rats (100-200 g) divided into four groups. Three of these groups were subjected to occlusion of the mesenteric artery 30 mins followed by 24 h reperfusion. On 2 groups SOD (15,000 U/kg/iv) and BN 52021 (20 mg/kg/po) were administered 45 mins before arterial occlusion. Following the 24 h reperfusion, the rats were sacrificed after overnight fasting. The jejunum and ileon were removed and fixed for morphological examination. Lesions in the small intestine were quantified. The results showed extensive necrosis, hemorrhage, oedema and neutrophil invasion in the jejunal and ileal mucosa. This injury was significantly reduced by SOD (15,000 U/kg/iv) and BN 52021 (20 mg/kg/po) pretreatment. In conclusion, free-oxygenated radicals appear to mediate reperfusion damage in the small intestine and PAF appears to be involved in the genesis of these toxic products. Thus, SOD and BN 52021 may be considered as protectors against ischemic disorders.

Abstract
The behaviour of nucleolar proteins in cycling PtK1 cells and in micronuclei with or without NORs was investigated by immunofluorescence using antibodies from autoimmune sera and confocal laser scanning microscopy. These antibodies were shown by electron microscopy to recognize antigens confined to only one of the three basic nucleolar components: fibrillar centres (FC), dense fibrillar component (DFC) and granular component (GC). Serial optical sections allowed us to determine the three-dimensional organization of these components in the nucleolus of cycling cells. Furthermore, clear differences were found in the distribution of the various antigens in micronucleated cells. Three patterns could be observed: (1) the FC antigens were found mainly in the nucleoli, but also in varying amounts in the dots; (2) surprisingly, the DFC antigens were found to accumulate preferentially in the dots; (3) the GC-specific marker stained intensively the nucleoli as well the dots. The results are interpreted with regard to possible mechanisms for targeting nucleolar proteins to the site of nucleolar formation.

Abstract
In ATT, a human autoimmune serum, we found anti-nucleolar antibodies that recognized nucleolar antigens confined to a single nucleolar compartment, the dense fibrillar component (DFC). We localized these antigens by immunoelectron microscopy in DFC of HeLa cell nucleoli both on Lowicryl sections and cryoultrathin sections without embedding. The antigens were solubilized by incubation with 2M NaCl but not by RNase or DNase treatment. The ATT serum crossreacted with rat liver nucleoli and PtK1 cell nucleoli in which immunofluorescence labelling displayed a clumpy pattern. During mitosis, the antigens dispersed in the cytoplasm until late telophase, when they gathered in the prenucleolar bodies. In human peripheral lymphocytes, or HeLa cells treated with actinomycin D, the antigens were still present but the fluorescence intensity decreased. By immunoblotting using human nuclear extracts, the ATT serum bound to a 116,000 Mr protein at dilutions up to 1:2000. The reactivity of this band diminished with actinomycin D-treated nuclear extracts. Two minor bands were also observed at 97 and 70K (K = 10(3) Mr). Immunopurification by competition or elution demonstrated that the 116K antigens were at the origin of the nucleolar labelling. This DFC marker appeared to be different from the NOR-silver-stained proteins, which in our preparations exhibited apparent molecular weights of 105, 80 and 38–40K. In addition, these 116K antigens did not exhibit the characteristics described for DNA topoisomerase I, fibrillarin or nucleolin. We propose the 116K antigen as a new marker of the DFC of the nucleoli.

Abstract
Since it has been suggested that propranolol could lead to hepatic encephalopathy, we undertook a study to assess the effects of propranolol on cerebral blood flow and cerebral functions. Sixteen patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and large esophageal varices and without major hepatic dysfunction (Child-Pugh score less than 14) or previous hepatic encephalopathy were randomized to receive either propranolol or placebo. The following measurements were performed before and 15 min after single intravenous administration of 15 mg propranolol or placebo and again 1 week after chronic oral administration of propranolol 160 mg per day or placebo: cerebral blood flow by the xenon-133 inhalation technique, quantitative electroencephalogram, psychometric test (number connection test), arterial ammonia, pH and pCO2, resting and exercise heart rates (after single administration, electroencephalogram, number connection test and biochemical measurements were not performed). Cerebral blood flow was not significantly modified by treatment (propranolol group: 80 +/- 23 vs. 76 +/- 11 and 83 +/- 9; placebo group: 73 +/- 10 vs. 75 +/- 11 and 81 +/- 18 ml per 100 gm per min, respectively, before and after single and repeated administration). Likewise, neither of the two treatments significantly altered number connection test, quantitative electroencephalogram index, arterial ammonia, pH and pCO2. We conclude that, in this population of cirrhotic patients, propranolol did not alter cerebral blood flow or neuropsychological functions. As a consequence, hemodynamic alterations cannot be considered as causes of possible cerebral side effects of propranolol in cirrhotic patients without severe hepatic dysfunction and previous hepatic encephalopathy.

Abstract
Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) was studied in 51 young schizophrenics. A significant decrease of CBF was seen in frontal and prefrontal regions (hypofrontal pattern) in chronic patients whose disease had evolved for more than 2 years and who were in remission. This hypofrontal pattern was reversible, as it disappeared during exacerbation of the disease. In 10 patients who had not been treated with neuroleptics for several weeks, we found a dopaminergic hypersensitivity in the frontal lobes, as a weak dose of piribedil restored near-normal frontality. This may reflect either the role of neuroleptic washout or a primitive dopaminergic depletion, as proposed by some authors in the chronic form of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Nuclear glycoconjugates were detected in situ by two lectins--Concanavalin A and Wheat germ agglutinin--on tissue sections embedded in the hydrophilic resin glycol methacrylate. These lectins were conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate for fluorescence microscopy, and labelled with ferritin for electron microscopy. The ovarian follicle of the lizard Lacerta vivipara was chosen for this study, because it enables four types of nuclei, with different ultrastructures and physiology to be observed on the same section. In this material, all the nucleoli were found to contain a high concentration of receptors for both lectins. The distribution of the receptors located in the chromatin and nucleoli was observed to vary within the same type of nucleus, depending on the lectin used. Some of our results suggest that increased labelling by Wheat germ agglutinin might depend on increased production of ribosomal precursors.

Abstract
The clinical and pathologic findings of a case of amyloidogenic heredo familial neuropathy type I is presented. The patient is a man, died at 46 years. The examination of a nerve biopsy, the clinical evolution and the family history are representative of the condition. The study of autopsy material revealed amyloïd deposits within vessels walls, autonomic nerves of almost all viscera but liver, muscle and skin, around myofibers in the heart. Kidney glomeruli were markedly involved and numerous obsolescent glomeruli were seen. Lesions of central nervous system were of interest: enlargement of meningeal vessels walls due to amyloïd deposits as subpial deposition band were observed. The pattern of amyloïd deposits within peripherical nerves was quite different according to their proximal or distal ends. While distal amyloïd deposits were scant, nerve damages were striking. In proximal portions, amyloïdosis could be found in all layers of nerve structures including the walls of endoneural small vessels. Semi-thin sections allowed to observe rare myelinated fibers entrapped by aggregates of a microfibrillary material. While there was absence of a patent axonal lesion, clusters of regenerating fibers were not infrequent. Ultrastructural study confirmed the close relationship between amyloïd fibrils, Schwann cell basal laminae and collagen fibers. An immunopathological study using immunserums raised against the AA composant of amyloïdosis, K and lambda light chains, and prealbumin were negative. Our results are in agreement with descriptions already reported in the medical literature. Therefore, they allow to discuss already known pathogenic mechanisms for this rare affection transmitted by a dominant autosomic gene.

Abstract
Fifty-six patients with supratentorial gliomas were given chemotherapy (VM 26 and CCNU). Results were analyzed and compared to recent data from the medical literature. After the first great expectations the place of chemotherapy in the management of primary gliomas has now been more accurately delineated: it is an adjunctive therapy, complementary to surgery and radiotherapy. The contribution of chemotherapy, although slight, is unquestionable: in 2/3 of cases a significant improvement of the length of survival can be expected.

Abstract
Ten years ago, because of the increasing number of patients recovering from Hodgkin disease, some authors advocated systematic laparotomy with splenectomy for more accurate staging in order to adjust therapy with more precision. This attitude now seems questionable because of the occurence of several complications, particularly of life-threatening infections, which can be fatal even after recovery from Hodgkin disease. The case of a twenty-three-year-old male patient with Hodgkin disease stage III A, histological grade I, is reported. MOPP chemotherapy, splenectomy and cobalt radiotherapy were followed by complete recovery. Seven years later the patient died from fulminant pneumococcal meningitis. A review of previously published cases show that prolonged prophylaxis with oral penicillin is mandatory in splenectomized patients. Immunization with the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine should be attempted even though the long-term results are still unknown.
