Improved upper limits on the stochastic gravitational-wave background from 2009-2010 LIGO and Virgo data

Gravitational waves from a variety of sources are predicted to superpose to create a stochastic background. This background is expected to contain unique information from throughout the history of the Universe that is unavailable through standard electromagnetic observations, making its study of fundamental importance to understanding the evolution of the Universe. We carry out a search for the stochastic background with the latest data from the LIGO and Virgo detectors. Consistent with predictions from most stochastic gravitational-wave background models, the data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. Assuming a gravitational-wave spectrum of Ω_{GW}(f)=Ω_{α}(f/f_{ref})^{α}, we place 95% confidence level upper limits on the energy density of the background in each of four frequency bands spanning 41.5-1726 Hz. In the frequency band of 41.5-169.25 Hz for a spectral index of α=0, we constrain the energy density of the stochastic background to be Ω_{GW}(f)<5.6×10^{-6}. For the 600-1000 Hz band, Ω_{GW}(f)<0.14(f/900  Hz)^{3}, a factor of 2.5 lower than the best previously reported upper limits. We find Ω_{GW}(f)<1.8×10^{-4} using a spectral index of zero for 170-600 Hz and Ω_{GW}(f)<1.0(f/1300  Hz)^{3} for 1000-1726 Hz, bands in which no previous direct limits have been placed. The limits in these four bands are the lowest direct measurements to date on the stochastic background. We discuss the implications of these results in light of the recent claim by the BICEP2 experiment of the possible evidence for inflationary gravitational waves.

Effect of ultrasound pre-treatment in the anaerobic co-digestion of cattle manure with food waste and sludge

This paper presents a study of the effect of applying ultrasound pre-treatment in the production of methane when co-digesting mixtures of cattle manure with food waste and sludge. A series of experiments were carried out under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions in continuously stirred-tank reactors containing 70% cattle manure, 20% food waste and 10% sewage sludge. Ultrasound pre-treatment allows operating at lower HRT, achieving higher volumetric methane yields: 0.85 L CH4/L day at 36°C and 0.82 CH4/L day at 55°C, when cattle manure and sewage sludge were sonicated. With respect to the non-sonicated waste, these values represent increases of up to 31% and 67% for mesophilic and thermophilic digestion, respectively.

Thermophilic co-digestion of cattle manure and food waste supplemented with crude glycerin in induced bed reactor (IBR)

The aim of the present research work was to boost biogas production from cattle manure (CM) by adding food waste (FW) and crude glycerin (Gly) from the biodiesel industry as co-substrates. For this purpose, different quantities of FW and Gly were added to CM and co-digested in an induced bed reactor (IBR) at 55 °C. Sonication pre-treatment was implemented in the CM+Gly mixture, applying 550 kJ/kg TS to enhance the biodegradability of these co-substrates. The best results were obtained with mixtures of 87/10/3 (CM/FW/Gly) (w/w) operating at an organic loading rate of 7 g COD/L day, obtaining 92% COD removal, a specific methane yield of 640 L CH4/kg VS and a methane production rate of 2.6L CH4/L day. These results doubled those obtained in the co-digestion of CM and FW without the addition of Gly (330 L CH4/kg VS and 1.2L CH4/L day).

Co-digestion of cattle manure with food waste and sludge to increase biogas production

Anaerobic co-digestion strategies are needed to enhance biogas production, especially when treating certain residues such as cattle/pig manure. This paper presents a study of co-digestion of cattle manure with food waste and sewage sludge. With the aim of maximising biogas yields, a series of experiments were carried out under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions using continuously stirred-tank reactors, operating at different hydraulic residence times. Pretreatment with ultrasound was also applied to compare the results with those obtained with non-pretreated waste. Specific methane production decreases when increasing the OLR and decreasing HRT. The maximum value obtained was 603 LCH(4)/kg VS(feed) for the co-digestion of a mixture of 70% manure, 20% food waste and 10% sewage sludge (total solid concentration around 4%) at 36°C, for an OLR of 1.2g VS/L day. Increasing the OLR to 1.5g VS/L day led to a decrease of around 20-28% in SMP. Lower methane yields were obtained when operating at 55°C. The increase in methane production when applying ultrasound to the feed mixtures does not compensate for the energy spent in this pretreatment.

Physico-chemical analysis and calorific values of poultry manure

Spain is one of the major producers of broilers and laying hens in the European Union, with an overall market share of around 12%. The poultry manure that is produced is usually employed as fertilizer on cropland, either directly or after a composting process. In some cases, however, this waste is transported over 120km to be used as fertilizer, with the resulting high transport costs. In other countries, poultry manure is used as an alternative natural fuel source for power generation. In this study, poultry manure from all the laying hen farms in Asturias was characterized with a view to its possible use as an energy source. The Higher Heating Values on a dry basis (experimental) varies between 12,052 and 13,882kJ/kg. Lower Heating Values (LHVs) on a wet basis range are much lower (mean values of 2664kJ/kg) due to the high moisture content of poultry manure. Accordingly, the co-combustion of this waste with other types of waste such as forest and wood waste (LHV on a wet basis of 8044 and 15,830kJ/kg, respectively) or municipal solid waste (LHV on a wet basis of 10,725kJ/kg) should be considered as an alternative energy source. Chlorine and sulphur contents in dry matter vary around mean values of 0.64% and 0.11%, respectively. The waste also presents high amounts of Ca (4.84%) and K (2.38%).

Lung oxidative stress as related to exercise and altitude. Lipid peroxidation evidence in exhaled breath condensate: a possible predictor of acute mountain sickness

Lung oxidative stress (OS) was explored in resting and in exercising subjects exposed to moderate and high altitude. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) was collected under field conditions in male high-competition mountain bikers performing a maximal cycloergometric exercise at 670 m and at 2,160 m, as well as, in male soldiers climbing up to 6,125 m in Northern Chile. Malondialdehyde concentration [MDA] was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography in EBC and in serum samples. Hydrogen peroxide concentration [H(2)O(2)] was analysed in EBC according to the spectrophotometric FOX(2) assay. [MDA] in EBC of bikers did not change while exercising at 670 m, but increased from 30.0+/-8.0 to 50.0+/-11.0 nmol l(-1) (P<0.05) at 2,160 m. Concomitantly, [MDA] in serum and [H(2)O(2)] in EBC remained constant. On the other hand, in mountaineering soldiers, [H(2)O(2)] in EBC under resting conditions increased from 0.30+/-0.12 mumol l(-1) at 670 m to 1.14+/-0.29 mumol l(-1) immediately on return from the mountain. Three days later, [H(2)O(2)] in EBC (0.93 +/-0.23 mumol l(-1)) continued to be elevated (P<0.05). [MDA] in EBC increased from 71+/-16 nmol l(-1) at 670 m to 128+/-26 nmol l(-1) at 3,000 m (P<0.05). Changes of [H(2)O(2)] in EBC while ascending from 670 m up to 3,000 m inversely correlated with concomitant variations in HbO2 saturation (r=-0.48, P<0.05). AMS score evaluated at 5,000 m directly correlated with changes of [MDA] in EBC occurring while the subjects moved from 670 to 3,000 m (r=0.51, P<0.05). Lung OS may constitute a pathogenic factor in AMS.

Pharmacokinetics and penetration into tissue fluid of ceftizoxime in normal and hyperthermic sheep

The pharmacokinetics of ceftizoxime was studied in six sheep before and after inducing hyperthermia using Escherichia coli endotoxin. Sheep implanted subcutaneously with cages of non-reactive material for collecting tissue cage fluid (TCF) were used to conduct two trials. In Trial 1 animals with normal basal temperature (normal sheep (NS)) were given intravenous (i.v.) and intramuscular (i.m.) monodoses of ceftizoxime (20mg/kg BW) at 1 week interval. One and 5 weeks later (Trial 2) each sheep were injected 1µg/kg BW of endotoxin to produce hyperthermia (hyperthermic sheep (HS)) previously to i.v. administration (HSi.v.) and i.m. (HSi.m.) of ceftizoxime (20mg/kg BW), respectively. Serum and TCF samples were collected over 6h post-administration. Ceftizoxime concentrations in serum and TCF were determined by a microbiological assay. The concentrations in serum and TCF of ceftizoxime were analyzed through compartmental and non-compartmental models.Rectal temperature were significantly incremented in all animals during Trial 2. The half-time and constant of elimination in serum of ceftizoxime in NSi.v. (t(1/2)=1.1+/-0.4h; lambda(z)=0.7+/-0.2h(-1)) were statistically different those observed in HSi.v. (t(1/2)=1.4+/-0.4h; lambda(z)=0.5+/-0.2h(-1)). The constants of distribution in NSi.v. and HSIV were 5.1+/-4.6 and 4.1+/-3.4h(-1), respectively. The time to reach the maximum concentrations in TCF was latter (p<0.05) in NS (t(max)=2.3+/-0.7h) than in HS (t(max)=1.3+/-0.6 h). After i.m. administration in NS the absorption half-life (0.12+/-0.19h) was latter (p<0.05) than in HS (0.06+/-0.007h) with greater areas under the curve (AUC in NS=65.4+/-20.8 and AUC in HS=34.7+/-7.5 (µg/ml) h). The maximum value of concentration in serum (C(max)) and AUC in TCF were greater (p<0.05) in NS (C(max)=46.1+/-10.6µg/ml and AUC=84.4+/-17.4 (µg/ml) h) as compared to same HS (C(max)=27.0+/-12.9µg/ml and AUC=47.9+/-3.9 (µg/ml) h). The concentrations of ceftizoxime in TCF after i.v. and i.m. in NS and HS were elevated during a 6h period after administration. The bioavailability of ceftizoxime in NS (101.6+/-59.9%) and HS (87.4+/-63.3%) was suitable for its use by the i.m. route.

Incidence of autoantibodies in the infertile population

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of autoantibodies in patients with no term pregnancies. Patients selected included 43 with primary infertility and 110 with a history of pregnancy loss. In the first group the incidence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and IgG and IgM antiphospholipid antibodies (APL) was 37.2% (p < 0.05) and 53.5% (p < 0.05), respectively. In the group of patients with a history of miscarriage, 31.8% (p < 0.05) were positive for ANA and 38.2% (p < 0.05) for APL. Controls were 35 healthy patients with proven fertility and no history of pregnancy loss or autoimmune disease. In this group the incidence of ANA was 5.7% and 11.4% for APL. The high incidence of autoantibodies found in patients with primary infertility might suggest a direct involvement of these antibodies in reproductive failure and consequently in IVF and assisted fertility procedures. The prevalence of ANA and APL has been extensively described in patients with a history of recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL). In this study we observed antibodies even after the first miscarriage. We therefore conclude that patients with a history of reproductive failure should be immunologically evaluated and treated before undergoing assisted fertilization techniques or before a new pregnancy in those cases of RPL.

Pharmacokinetics and penetration into tissue fluid of cefotaxime in bovines

Concentrations of cefotaxime in serum and tissue fluid were studied in the bovine after intravenous and intramuscular administration at a dosage of 10 mg.kg-1 body weight. Steers implanted subcutaneously with tissue cages were used. After intravenous bolus administration, profiles of mean concentrations in serum over time were described by a two-compartment open model. The rate constant of elimination was 1.4 +/- 0.3 h-1 and the half-life 0.6 +/- 0.1 h. The rate constant of distribution was 11.5 +/- 1.9 h-1, and the half-life was 0.06 +/- 0.01 h. The volume of distribution at steady state was 250.6 +/- 37.3 ml.kg-1. The area under the curve was 31.8 +/- 7.4 micrograms.ml-1.h. The penetration ratio into tissue fluid was 36.5 +/- 15.4%. After intramuscular injection, the half-life was 1.1 +/- 0.3 h, the area under the curve was 27.5 +/- 6.8 micrograms.ml-1.h, and the penetration ratio into tissue fluid was 47.1 +/- 15.8%. The concentrations in tissue fluid after intravenous and intramuscular administration of cefotaxime were elevated during a 6-hour period after administration.

Human papillomavirus infection in esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma in western countries

Recent studies have suggested that esophageal HPV infection could be a risk factor for esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma. The aims of our study were to assess the presence of HPV esophageal infection among French patients with esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma and to compare the prevalence of this infection among control patients exposed to similar known risk factors (alcohol and tobacco) and among non-exposed control patients. All patients had the following investigations: serum immunoglobulin level, T-lymphocyte subsets, cutaneous anergy test and endoscopy with biopsies from tumoral and normal areas. Three different methods were used for HPV-infection diagnosis: histological score, in situ hybridization intended for detection of HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31 and 33, and dot blot intended for detection of HPV types 6/11 and 16/18. Five out of 12 patients with esophageal carcinoma had HPV esophageal infection. This infection did not result from impaired immune status. The most frequently observed types are HPV 16/18. None out of 17 exposed controls and only 1 out of 7 nonexposed controls had HPV esophageal infection (p less than 0.01). HPV infection may be implicated in the development of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma in association with known risk factors.

[Kidney transplantation]

In a consecutive series of 639 Renal Transplants (RT) performed between January 1st 1978 and December 31st 1988, 75 Renal Transplanctectomies (RTX) were carried out. Of those, fifty-seven (76%) were due to immunological causes, 10 (13.3%) to vascular complications, 7 (9.3%) to urological problems and 1 (1.3%) to deep infection. The time elapsed between RTX and RT was as follows: 25 were performed earlier than 6 weeks, 17 between 6 weeks to 6 months, and 33 after 6 months. The higher number of complications did not happened, as it is frequently described, in the first group; on the contrary, it fell in the group that had been transplanted longer. There were 13 immunologically caused renal rhexis, 5 of which were RTX, another 5 were operated on and diagnosed at perioperation, and immediately received the appropriate treatment so they were able to keep their kidney, and finally, 3 patients were diagnosed a rejection with renal rhexis, ecographically confirmed. These patients were given only medical treatment, which was enough to allow jugulation of the picture. RTX techniques used were: extracapsular in 28 cases and intracapsular in 47. Surgical approach, except for 2 cases of simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation, was extraperitoneal.
