Abstract
Knowledge about additive on alleviating the negative effects of fish exposed to cadmium (Cd) needs to be more identified in the aquaculture. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate whether diet supplemented with astaxanthin could mitigate adverse effects on hepatic Cd deposition, oxidative, inflammatory and non-specific immune responses, and intestinal morphology of Trachinotus ovatus exposed to dietary Cd treatment. Three isonitrogen-isolipid experimental diets supplemented with/without CdCl2/Astaxanthin were formulated to feed the T. ovatus for 30 days. Results demonstrated that considerably higher hepatic Cd level was found in two Cd supplementing groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05), while no statistical difference of hepatic Cd concentration between these two Cd supplementing groups (p > 0.05). The activity of hepatic total superoxide dismutase, RNA expression levels of hepatic Nrf2-keap1 pathway genes, pro-inflammatory genes, and non-specific immune genes were no statistical differences between the control group and the dietary Cd supplementing group (p > 0.05), while these data in the dietary Cd with astaxanthin group showed significantly higher than that in the dietary Cd without astaxanthin group (p < 0.05). On the contrary, hepatic malondialdehyde content in the dietary Cd group showed significantly higher than that in the control group and dietary Cd with astaxanthin group (p < 0.05). Significantly lower mid-intestine morphology parameters were obtained in the dietary Cd group than the control group (p < 0.05), while significantly higher data were found in the dietary Cd with astaxanthin group compared to the dietary Cd group (p < 0.05). These results indicated that astaxanthin could mitigate the inhibitory effects of Cd on the oxidative, inflammatory and non-specific immune responses, and intestinal morphology of T. ovatus while not reduce the hepatic Cd deposition.

Abstract
Haematococcus pluvialis can be used as a green additive in aquafeeds due to it contains rich astaxanthin and polyunsaturated fatty acid. In the present study, a newly strain of H. pluvialis GXU-A23 with high concentration of astaxanthin was firstly isolated by a newly culture strategy in our laboratory. In addition, H. pluvialis GXU-A23 was applied in the Litopenaeus vannamei feed for determining whether it has positive effects on the growth performance, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status, metabolic capacity and mid-intestine morphology of juvenile L. vannamei. Shrimp with 0.63 g approximately initial body weight were fed diets supplemented with/without 50 g/kg H. pluvialis GXU-A23. After 8 weeks feeding intervention, significantly higher growth performance of L. vannamei was obtained in the H. pluvialis GXU-A23 treatment group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). At the same time, L. vannamei fed with H. pluvialis GXU-A23 acquired significantly better antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status than the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, higher RNA expression level of hepatopancreas digestive enzyme, hepatopancreas lipid and glucose metabolic enzymes as well as better mid-intestine morphology were found in the H. pluvialis GXU-A23 treatment group than the control group (p < 0.05). These results indicated that 50 g/kg H. pluvialis GXU-A23 was suitable for the L. vannamei feed, which could improve the growth performance, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status, metabolic capacity and mid-intestine morphology of juvenile L. vannamei.

Abstract
Filamentous microalga Klebsormidium sp. has huge potential to become a natural and healthy additive in aquatic feed since it contains various bioactive nutrients, such as linoleic acid (LA), carotenoids, and chlorophylls. Therefore, an eight-week feeding experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary Klebsormidium sp. on the growth performance, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status, metabolism, and mid-intestine morphology of Litopenaeus vannamei. Two isonitrogenous and isolipid diets supplemented with and without 5% Klebsormidium sp. were prepared. Results showed that L. vannamei fed with Klebsormidium sp. had better growth performance and feed utilization by optimizing mid-intestine morphology and improving the carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, Klebsormidium sp. also enhanced the antioxidant capacity of L. vannamei by downregulating antioxidant parameters (hepatopancreas T-SOD, hepatopancreas GSH-PX, hemolymph T-SOD, hemolymph MDA) and RNA expression levels of antioxidant genes (gsh-px and cat). Furthermore, the supplementations of dietary Klebsormidium sp. significantly improved hepatopancreas health by downregulating RNA expression levels of pro-inflammatory related genes (relish and rho). Therefore, a dose of 5% Klebsormidium sp. is recommended for the daily diet of L. vannamei to improve the growth performance, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status, metabolism, and mid-intestine morphology of shrimp.

Abstract
The present study investigated the potential mechanisms of astaxanthin in the regulation of gastrointestinal immunity and retinal mitochondrial function of golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). Triplicate groups of juvenile T. ovatus (mean initial weight: 6.03 ± 0.01 g) were fed one of six diets (D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, and D6) for 8 weeks, with each diet containing various concentrations of astaxanthin (0, 0.0005, 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, or 0.1%, respectively). Growth performance of fish fed the D2–D5 diets was higher than that of fish fed the D1 diet; however, growth performance and survival of fish deteriorated sharply in fish fed the D6 diet. Gut villus in fish fed the D2–D5 diets were significantly longer and wider than that of fish fed the D6 diet. Feeding with D2–D5 diets led to increased abundance of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Oceanobacillus, Lactococcus, Halomonas, Lactobacillus, and Psychrobacter while abundance of Vibrio and Bacterium decreased. Additionally, feeding with the D6 diet resulted in a sharp decline in Pseudomonas and Lactobacillus abundance and a sharp increase in Vibrio abundance. A low dissolved oxygen environment (DO, 1.08 mg/L) was conducted for 10 h after the rearing trial. No fish mortality was observed for any of the diet treatments. Lysozyme (LZY) activity in fish fed the D6 diet decreased sharply and was significantly lower than that in other groups. ROS production also decreased sharply in fish fed the D6 diet. Moreover, the conjunctiva and sclera in the fish fed the D6 diet were indistinguishable. Suitable dietary astaxanthin supplementation levels (0.005–0.1%) exerting a neuroprotective effect from low dissolved oxygen environments is due to up-regulated expression of anti-apoptotic factors, such as phosphorylated Bcl-2-associated death promoter (pBAD), phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β (pGSK-3β), Bcl-2 extra large (Bcl-xL), and down-regulated expression of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) pro-apoptotic factor in retinas. Furthermore, suitable dietary astaxanthin levels (0.0005–0.01%) suppressed up-regulation of critical mitochondrial components, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), while excessive astaxanthin supplementation produces the opposite effect. In brief, high-dose astaxanthin arouses and aggravates low dissolved oxygen-induced inflammation, oxidative stress, intestinal disorder, retinal apoptosis, and retinal mitochondrial dysfunction in T. ovatus. Second-degree polynomial regression of WG indicated that the optimum dietary astaxanthin for juvenile T. ovatus is 0.049%.

Abstract
Optical properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are controlled by robust excitons characterized by a very large oscillator strengths. Encapsulation of monolayers such as MoSe_{2} in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) yields narrow optical transitions approaching the homogenous exciton linewidth. We demonstrate that the exciton radiative rate in these van der Waals heterostructures can be tailored by a simple change of the hBN encapsulation layer thickness as a consequence of the Purcell effect. The time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show that the neutral exciton spontaneous emission time can be tuned by one order of magnitude depending on the thickness of the surrounding hBN layers. The inhibition of the radiative recombination can yield spontaneous emission time up to 10 ps. These results are in very good agreement with the calculated recombination rate in the weak exciton-photon coupling regime. The analysis shows that we are also able to observe a sizable enhancement of the exciton radiative decay rate. Understanding the role of these electrodynamical effects allows us to elucidate the complex dynamics of relaxation and recombination for both neutral and charged excitons.

Abstract
This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of dietary mixed probiotics on growth, non-specific immunity, intestinal morphology and microbiota of juvenile pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Juvenile shrimp (initial body weight 1.21 ± 0.01 g) were fed diets containing graded probiotics (F1: 0 mg/kg probiotics; F2: 1000 mg/kg probiotics; F3: 2000 mg/kg probiotics; F4: 4000 mg/kg compound probiotics; F5: 6000 mg/kg probiotics; F6: 8000 mg/kg probiotics) for 8 weeks. The result of this trial showed that the growth performance (SGR, WG, FBW) of shrimp fed diets containing probiotics (F2∼F6) were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed diet without supplemental probiotics (F1) (P < 0.05), and the highest values of the growth performance (SGR, WG, FBW) and lowest FCR were found in shrimp fed the diet containing 2000 mg/kg probiotics. Total antioxidant capacity of shrimp fed diet F2 and F3 were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the basal diets (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase in F4 treatment was significantly higher than that of basal treatment (P < 0.05). Catalase of shrimp in all probiotics supplemented (F2∼F6) treatments were significantly higher than that of the control one (F1) (P < 0.05). Malondialdehyde in F5 groups was significantly lower than that of F1 groups (P < 0.05). Alkline phosphatase and acid phosphatase in F3 treatments were significantly higher than those of the basal one (P < 0.05). Lysozyme of shrimp fed F2∼F6 were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed F1 diet (P < 0.05). The lipase and amylase activities in 2000 mg/kg probiotics groups showed the highest activities and were significantly higher than that of control one (P < 0.05). Intestinal villi height in F3∼F6 treatments were significantly higher than that of control one (P < 0.05). Alpha diversity indices including observed species, chao1, ACE and shannon indices showed that F2 and F3 groups had higher microbial diversity in their intestines, both richness and evenness. PCA plot showed that there was a clear shift of F2 and F3 groups from the control groups in microbial community structure. The dominant phyla in pacific white shrimp are proteobacteria, bacteroidetes and actinobacteria, the dominant genus were algoriphagus and vibrio. As the probiotics increased, the gemmatimonadetes, acidobacteria, deltaproteobacteria and xanthomonadales firstly increased and then decreased, with the highest content in F2 group, which was no significant difference to F3 group (P > 0.05) while significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the supplement of mixed species probiotics can promote growth performance, enhance the non-specific immunity, influence the microbiota of the pacific white shrimps and the recommended optimum dosage in diet of Litopenaeus vannamei was 2000 mg/kg.

Abstract
The study was conducted to compare and evaluate effects of four different macro-algaes on growth, immune response, and intestinal microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. In the rearing trial 1, shrimp were fed five diets containing four sources of macro-algaes for 8 weeks, named D1 (without macro-algae), D2 (Porphyra haitanensis), D3 (Undaria pinnatifida), D4 (Saccharina japonica), and D5 (Gracilaria lemaneiformis), respectively. Growth performance of shrimp in D5 diet was significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the control and D4 diet (P < 0.05); however, there is no significant difference among D2, D3, and D5 diets (P > 0.05). Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter from the D2, D3, and D5 diets were significantly higher than that from the control and D4 diets (P < 0.05). Supplementary macro-algaes enhanced hepatopancreas immunity through positively increasing total antioxidant status (TAS) and prophenoloxidase activity (ProPO), as well as up-regulating the hepatopancreas RNA expression of ProPO and IκBα and down-regulating the expression of transforming growth factor β. Furthermore, dietary macro-algaes modified intestinal microbiota of L. vannamei, boosting the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Bacillaceae, and decreasing those detrimental bacterial such as Gammaproteobacteria and Vibrionaceae. In the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) challenge trial, shrimps were injected for 6-day after the rearing trial. On the fourth day, shrimp death started to occur, and the mortality in D2, D3, and D5 diets was significantly lower than that in control and SJ diets during 4-6 challenged days (P < 0.05). Dietary macro-algaes ameliorated hepatopancreas damage in L. vannamei by increasing TAS and ProPO activities and decreasing SOD activity, inhibiting the lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde), as well as regulating the immune-related genes expression. Taken together, dietary macro-algaes availably relieved enterohepatic oxidative damage by improving antioxidant ability and immunity and regulated intestinal microbiota in L. vannamei. These results indicated that G. lemaneiformis is the most suitable macro-algae and then followed by U. pinnatifida and P. haitanensis as the feed ingredient for L. vannamei.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted to determine the effects of dietary macroalgae Porphyra haitanensis on growth, immunity and intestinal microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. In trial 1, shrimp (mean initial wet weight about 0.64 g) were fed with seven diets (P0, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6) containing 0% (basal diet), 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% and 6% P. haitanensis in triplicate for 60 days. Growth performance (weight gain, WG; specific growth rate, SGR) of shrimp fed the P4 diet were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed P0, P5 and P6 diets (P < 0.05) but without significant differences with shrimp fed P1-P3 diets (P > 0.05). Hepatopancreas phenoloxidase (PO) activity of shrimp fed the P. haitanensis containing diets was significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the basal diet (P0) (P < 0.05). Total haemocyte count (THC) of shrimp fed basal diet (P0) was significantly lower than that of shrimp fed diets containing P. haitanensis. Our results declared that dietary P. haitanensis supplementation increases the abundance of beneficial bacterials such as Nitrosopumilus, Marinobacter or Bifidobacterium and reduces the abundance of harmful bacterias such as Vibrio, and especially pronounced in P4 diet treatment. In trial 2, a WSSV injection challenge test was conducted for 7-day after the rearing trial and shrimp survival was also compared among treatments. A sudden shrimp death was found from the 4th day, and values of survival of shrimp fed the P3-P4 diets were higher than that of shrimp fed other diets during 4-7 days challenge test. The immune response in trial 2 were characterized by higher superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and PO activities, lower THC and higher HCT compared to levels found in trial 1. In conclusion, suitable dietary P. haitanensis could enhance the growth performance, antioxidant capacity and alter total bacterial numbers or microbial diversity of L. vannamei and furthermore reduce oxidative stress and immune depression challenged by WSSV injection stress, and the level of P. haitanensis supplemented in the diet should be between 2.51% and 3.14%.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted to determine the effects of dietary Forsythia suspensa extract (FSE) on shrimp, Penaeus monodon, first on growth performance, second on the immune response and immune related gene expression of shrimp. In trial 1, shrimp (mean initial wet weight about 3.02 g) were fed with five diets containing 0% (basal diet), 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.04% and 0.06% FSE in triplicate for 60 days. Growth performance (final body wet weight, FBW; weight gain, WG; biomass gain, BG) of shrimp fed FSE diets were higher (P < 0.05) than that of shrimp fed the basal diet. The survival among all the diets treatments were above 90% and no significant difference was revealed among them (P > 0.05). The antioxidant capacity (total antioxidant status, TAS; glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px) appears in the trend of firstly increasing then decreasing with the increasing of dietary FSE levels. The highest value of TAS and GSH-Px were found in shrimp fed 0.02% FSE diet and were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the basal and 0.06% FSE diets (P < 0.05). Hepatopancreas malondialdehyde (MDA) of shrimp fed FSE diets were lower (P < 0.05) than that of shrimp fed the basal diet. Total haemocyte count of shrimp fed the basal diet was lower (P < 0.05) than that of shrimp fed FSE diets. Haemolymph clotting time of shrimp had the opposite trend with the total haemocyte count of shrimp. No significant differences were found in haemolymph biomarkers of intestinal permeability (endotoxin and diamine oxidase) and in molecular gene expression profiles of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp 70) mRNA and hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) mRNA in haemolymph of shrimp among all diet treatments (P > 0.05). In trial 2, a pathogenic strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus 3HP (VP3HP) injection challenge test was conducted for 6-day after the rearing trial and shrimp survival were also compared among treatments. Survival of shrimp fed diets supplemented with 0.01%-0.02% FSE were higher than that of shrimp fed the basal and 0.06% FSE diets (P < 0.05). Dietary FSE supplementation produced stronger hepatopancreas antioxidant capacity (TAS, GSH-Px) (P < 0.05) and higher glutathione (GSH) level (P < 0.05), lower superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) (P < 0.05), higher total haemocyte count (P < 0.05), lower haemolymph clotting time (P < 0.05), lower MDA and carbonyl protein concentration (P < 0.05), lower haemolymph biomarkers of intestinal permeability (endotoxin and diamine oxidase) (P < 0.05), generated lower molecular gene expression profiles of HSP 70 mRNA and higher HIF-1α mRNA (P < 0.05) than the basal diet. The immune response were characterized by lower TAS and higher antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, GSH-Px) and higher oxidative stress level (MDA and carbonyl protein) and higher haemolymph biomarkers of intestinal permeability (endotoxin and diamine oxidase) compared to levels found in trail 1. However, the total haemocyte counts and haemolymph clotting times were not changed in 0.01%-0.02% FSE diets treatments between trial 1 and trial 2 (P > 0.05). The molecular gene expression profile of Hsp 70 mRNA was increased while HIF-1α mRNA was decreased when compared to trial 1. In conclusion, results suggested that dietary intake containing FSE could enhance the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of P. monodon and furthermore reduce oxidative stress and immune depression challenged by a pathogenic strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus stress. Considering the effect of FSE on both growth performance and immune response of P. monodon, the level of FSE supplemented in the diet should be between 0.01% and 0.02%.

Abstract
This study was conducted to characterize the phylogenetic diversity of a corrosive marine biofilm based on 16S rDNA. Results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that, out of the 112 clones developed, 52 clones (46.4%) were affiliated with two families of sulfate-reducing bacteria: Desulfovibrionaceae and Desulfobacteriaceae. Another 44 clones (39.3%) were affiliated with the Clostridiaceae family of low G+C, gram-positive bacteria. Three clones (2.7%) were closely related to Chlorobium vibrioforme, a green sulfur bacterium.

Abstract
Batch and continuous experiments were conducted to study the influence of dairy wastewater strength (2-30g-COD/L) on acidification at pH 5.5 and 37 degrees C. Results of batch experiments showed that carbohydrate was preferentially acidified as compared to protein and lipid. Production of VFAs (mainly acetate, propionate and butyrate) and hydrogen corresponded to carbohydrate acidification, whereas production of alcohols (mainly ethanol, propanol and butanol), plus i-butyrate and higher molecular-weight VFAs, corresponded to protein acidification. In treating high-strength wastewaters (8-30 g-COD/ L), acetate, butyrate and P(H2) decreased after reaching their peak levels before leveling off. Results of continuous experiments with 12h of hydraulic retention showed that acidification decreased with the increase of wastewater COD, from 57.1% at 2 g-COD/L to 28.8% at 30 g-COD/L; among the constituents in dairy wastewater, 92-99% of carbohydrates, 59-85% of protein and 12-42% of lipid were acidified. High-strength wastewater favored production of hydrogen and alcohols, especially propanol and butanol. The biomass yield was 0.258g-VSS/g-COD.

This study was conducted to develop a two-stage process of UASB and electrochemical oxidation for the treatment of Hong Kong leachate. The leachate, containing 4750 mg/L of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 1310 mg/L of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), was first treated in a UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) reactor at 37 degrees C. The process removed on average 66% of COD with 6.1 days of hydraulic retention time (HRT), corresponding to an organic loading rate COD of 0.78 g/(L.d). The UASB effluent, which had an average pH of 8.9, COD of 1610 mg/L and NH3-N of 1480 mg/L, was then further treated by electrochemical oxidation in a batch reactor with recirculation. With the addition of 2000 mg/L of chloride (in the form of sodium chloride) and at a current density of 32.3 mA/cm2, 87% of COD and 100% of NH3-N were removed from the UASB effluent in six hours. The energy consumption was < 55 kW.h/kg COD. The final effluent contained no residual NH3-N and only 209 mg/L of COD. In this paper, some basic problems in electrochemical oxidation, such as the effects of the operation parameters, the mechanism of the process, and assessment of the energy requirements were discussed in detail.

Abstract
Two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were concurrently operated for 146 days to examine the effects of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) on the sludge granulation process during start-up. Sludge granulation (defined as that over 10% of granules were larger than 2.0 mm) was achieved in the control reactor (R1) in approximate three months. Introduction of Al3+ at a concentration of 300 mg/l reduced the sludge granulation time by approximate one month. Throughout the experiment the AlCl3-added reactor (R2) had a higher biomass concentration, e.g., 13.8 g-MLVSS/l versus 12.8 g-MLVSS/l on Day 146. Granules became visible earlier in R2 compared with R1 (35 days versus 65 days). The average size of granules from R2 was larger than that from R1. The results demonstrated that AlCl3 enhanced the sludge granulation process in the UASB reactors.

Abstract
Six upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were concurrently operated for 146 d to examine the effects of calcium on the sludge granulation process during start-up. Introduction of Ca2+ at concentrations from 150 to 300 mg/l enhanced the biomass accumulation and granulation process. The calcium concentration in the granules was nearly proportional to the calcium concentration in the feed, and calcium carbonate was the main calcium precipitate in the granules. The specific activity of granules decreased with increasing influent calcium concentration. The optimum calcium concentration for the granulation was from 150 to 300 mg/l. The addition of low-concentration calcium to the UASB reactors appeared to enhance the three steps of sludge granulation: adsorption, adhesion and multiplication, but it did not lead to a different proliferation of predominant microorganisms in the granules.

Abstract
Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) were extracted by high-speed centrifugation at 20,000 G for 30 min from an activated sludge treating municipal wastewater. Each gram of sludge, as measured in volatile suspended solids (VSS), contained 7.3 mg of EPS, including 6.5 mg of protein (EPSp) and 0.8 mg of carbohydrate (EPSc). The EPSp had a mean MW of 2.0 x 105; about 18% of EPSp had MW over 5 x 104 and 16% below 5 x 103. For heavy metal concentrations ranging 10-100 mg/l, EPS on average removed 99% of Zn2+, 98% of Cu2+, 97% of Cr3+, 85% of Cd2+, 69% of Co2+, 37% of Ni2+, and 26% of CrO4(2-). The relative degrees of metal removals were inconsistent with those reported for the activated sludge process. Each mg of ESP had the capacity to remove up to 1.48 mg of Zn2+, 1.12 mg of Cu2+, 0.83 mg of Cr3+, 0.90 mg of Cd2+, 1.10 mg of Co2+, 0.25 mg each of Ni2+ and CrO4(2-). Results suggest the feasibility of recovering ESP from waste sludge for use as adsorbent. Freundlich isotherm correlated satisfactorily with the adsorption data of Ni2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and CrO4(2-) (R2 ranging 0.89-0.97), whereas Langmuir isotherm correlated satisfactorily with those of Zn2+, Cr3+ and Ni2+ (R2 ranging 0.93-0.96). Both correlated poorly for those of Co2+.

Abstract
The effects of chromium (III) and cadmium on the anaerobic acidogenesis of a simulated dairy waste were examined using serum vials. At Cd dosages less than 20 mg/l, the acidogenesis process was enhanced by the dosage, resulting in a higher degree of acidification, protein conversion, and hydrogen production than the control. At dosages over 20-mg/l, Cd inhibited the acidogenesis. The Cr (III) dosage of 5 mg/l reduced overall volatile fatty acid and alcohol generation, degree of acidification, conversions of lactose, lipid and protein, and total biogas production, with the exception of accumulation of hydrogen and propionate. At dosages exceeding 5 mg/l, Cr (III) had a severe inhibition on the acidogenesis. The Cd concentrations which caused a 50% reduction in total volatile fatty acid and alcohol production, degree of acidification and cumulative gas production were higher than the corresponding values caused by Cr (III), suggesting that Cr (III) was more toxic to acidogenic bacteria than Cd.

Abstract
The microbial community structure of granular sludge from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating brewery effluent was studied by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Twelve major bands were observed in the DGGE fingerprint for the Bacteria domain and four bands for the Archaea domain. Of the bacterial bands observed, six were successfully purified and sequenced. Among them, three were related to the gram-positive low G + C group, one to the Delta subclass of the Proteobacteria, one to the Gamma subclass, and one to the Cytophaga group with no close related sequence. The 16S rRNA sequences of the four archaeal bands were closely associated with Methanosaeta concilii and Methanobacterium formicum.

Abstract
Acidification of simulated dairy wastewater was conducted in an upflow reactor at 55 degrees C. Results showed that the degree of acidification decreased with the increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading rate, from 60.8% at 4 g l(-1) day(-1) to 27.1% at 24 g l(-1) day(-1). Carbohydrate was readily degraded at all loading rates, but degradation of protein and lipid decreased with the increase in loading rate. Most carbohydrate degradation occurred at the reactor bottom, whereas protein was degraded mainly after the carbohydrate became depleted. The predominant acidification products were acetate, propionate, butyrate and ethanol, whereas formate, i-butyrate, valerate, i-valerate, caproate, lactate, methanol, propanol and butanol were present in lesser quantities. The increase in loading rate resulted in the increase of propionate and the decrease of acetate, but had little effect on ethanol and butyrate productions. Only 2.5-8.8% of influent COD was converted to hydrogen and methane. The biomass yield was 0.30-0.43 mg VSS mg(-1) COD.

Abstract
This study demonstrated that atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be used to obtain high-resolution topographical images of bacteria, and to quantify the tip-cell interaction force and the surface elasticity. Results show that the adhesion force between the Si3N4 tip and the bacteria surface was in the range from -3.9 to -4.3 nN. On the other hand, the adhesion forces at the periphery of the cell-substratum contact surface ranged from -5.1 to -5.9 nN and those at the cell-cell interface ranged from -6.5 to -6.8 nN. The two latter forces were considerably greater than the former one, most likely due to the accumulation of extracellular polymer substance (EPS). Results also show that the elasticity varied on the cell surface.

Abstract
The biological and immunological characteristics of HIV-1 core protein p17-24 expressed by recombinant vaccinia viruses were studied. The results of indirect immunofluorescence assay (I-IFA), Western blot and dot ELISA showed that the two recombinants could express the p24 gag and p17-24 gag fusion proteins in infected cell lines respectively. The electromicroscope observation revealed that the expressed proteins could also assemble into virus-like particles. The recombinant vaccinia viruses can also stimulate mice for the formation of anti HIV-1 Gag p24 antibody. When infected with the recombinant viruses, the chromosome DNA ladder caused by the apoptosis of the BHK cell was observed.

Abstract
Guard cells modulate stomatal apertures in response to hormones, metabolic demands and environmental stimuli. The guard cell PM H(+)-ATPases play a critical role in this process by generating the electrochemical gradient to drive solute transport and concomitant water flux. The PM H(+)-ATPase activity is specifically regulated by red and blue light, fungal toxins and auxin. To determine if the unique responsiveness of the guard cell PM H(+)-ATPase is due to the expression of a cell-specific isoform, we amplified by PCR, and cloned portions of PM H(+)-ATPase genes VHA1 and VHA2, which are expressed in guard cell protoplasts (GCP). In situ hybridization to leaf tissue sections indicated that VHA1 and VHA2 genes were expressed in guard cells and mesophyll cells but not in epidermal cells or vascular tissues. Furthermore, a gene-specific quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR detected VHA1 and VHA2 mRNAs in both GCP and mesophyll cell protoplast mRNA as well as in mRNA isolated from roots, leaves, stems and flowers. Thus, two PM H(+)-ATPase genes expressed in guard cells are also expressed in many other tissues and cell types. This suggests that the unique responsiveness of the guard cell PM H(+)-ATPases to environmental stimuli results from cell-specific signal transduction pathways rather than the expression of a cell-specific PM H(+)-ATPase.

Abstract
The molecular mechanisms by which higher plant cells take up K+ across the plasma membrane (plasmalemma) remain unknown. Physiological transport studies in a large number of higher plant cell types, including guard cells, have suggested that at least two distinct types of K(+)-uptake mechanisms exist, permitting low-affinity and high-affinity K+ accumulation, respectively. Recent patch clamp studies have revealed the presence of inward-conducting (inward-rectifying) K+ channels in the plasma membrane of higher plant cells. Research on guard cells has suggested that these K+ channels provide a major pathway for proton pump-driven K+ uptake during stomatal opening. In the present study the contribution of inward-rectifying K+ channels to higher plant cell K+ uptake was investigated by examining kinetic properties of guard cell K+ channels in Vicia faba in response to changes in the extracellular K+ concentration. Increasing the extracellular K+ concentration in the range from 0.3 mM to 11.25 mM led to enhancement of inward K+ currents and changes in current-voltage characteristics of K+ channels. The increase in K+ conductance as a function of the extracellular K+ concentration revealed a K(+)-equilibrium dissociation constant (Km) of approximately 3.5 mM, which suggests that inward-rectifying K+ channels can function as a molecular mechanism for low-affinity K+ uptake. Lowering the extracellular K+ concentration in the range from 11 mM to 1 mM induced negative shifts in the activation potential of K+ channels, such that these channels function as a K+ sensor, permitting only K+ uptake. At low extracellular K+ concentrations of 0.3 mM K+, inward-rectifying K+ channels induce hyperpolarization. Results from the present study suggest that inward-rectifying K+ channels constitute an essential molecular mechanism for plant nutrition and growth control by providing a K(+)-sensing and voltage-dependent pathway for low-affinity K+ uptake into higher plant cells and additionally by contributing to plasma membrane potential regulation.

Abstract
Wastewater from a whey processing plant was treated in two on-site pilot plants, a three-stage activated sludge plant and an anaerobic reactor, each of which had the capacity of treating 230 L/h of wastewater. The activated sludge treatment was very effective. It reduced 99% of 5-d biochemical oxygen demand of the plant wastewater (from an average of 1062 to 9 mg/L) and 91% of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (from 109 to 10 mg/L) after a total retention time of 19.8 h. The intermediate 5-d biochemical oxygen demand reductions were 86% after 3.8 h in the first stage and 97% after another 8 h in the second stage. The completely mixed anaerobic reactor reduced only 87% of 5-d biochemical oxygen demand after 2 d of retention. However, with an additional 8 h of activated sludge treatment the total 5-d biochemical oxygen demand was reduced by 99%. Both pilot plants were operated smoothly in spite of the considerable fluctuations in pollutant levels of the plant wastewater.

Abstract
The duration of immunity following measles vaccination of 2882 immunized children has been investigated in a closed region of China for 15 years. A total of 1002 of the children were treated as primary immunization subjects, and 1547 as reimmunization subjects. These two cohorts were not in contact with known wild measles virus over the whole observation period, and the results obtained probably reflected the antibody responses to measles vaccine alone. The remaining 333 vaccinees came into contact with wild measles virus, and this permitted evaluation of the protective effect of the measles vaccines tested: 4 children experienced very mild clinical measles, and 329 experienced subclinical infection, including 12 who had had undetectable haemagglutination-inhibition antibodies for 9-10 years. These results indicate that the immunity induced by successful primary immunization may persist for at least 15 years. Within this period, a second dose of vaccine only induces low antibody responses which decrease rapidly to their original levels. This provides strong evidence that the immunity produced by primary immunization is long-lasting. However, there were some indications that reimmunization might produce better effects if live attenuated measles virus were used with a longer interval between doses.
